Belizean Breakfast By LYRA SPANG Owner, anthropologist & tour guide Taste Belize

e all know that moment, typically when we are smack in the middle of a busy work day, when your stomach starts curling in on itself and you realize, you should have eaten breakfast! “It’s too late now,” you tell yourself, “I didn’t have time to cook this morning; coffee will have to carry me to lunch time.” The next day you wake up to an empty kitchen, but have no fear because here on the Placencia Peninsula, we have a huge variety of breakfast options for sale up and down the street, keeping our bellies full and our work on point.
Rule #2: Breakfast should always contain protein. Whether it be eggs, beans, left over stewed chicken, pulled pork, fried fish or an out of the package hot dog, there should be protein on your plate or in your hand. Rule #3: Wheat flour or corn masa should be involved. In fact, most takeout breakfasts can be divided into two main categories: those that involve wheat (white) flour and those that are corn based.
Rule #4: Cereal is really just a snack. We have a variety of porridges, ranging from dried green banana to imported oats, which people have eaten in Belize for generations, but dry cereals in a box have become more popular in the last 20 years, starting first with only corn flakes and expanding now to an entire aisle in the grocery store. Despite this, most of us still don’t consider a bowl of cereal to really be a “proper” breakfast meal.
Within these guidelines is plenty of room for experimentation, and the result has been a delicious array of quick breakfasts up and down the Peninsula. Let’s start with what If you are from here you already we call “corn foods.” Tacos are the know what I am going to say. Johnny cakes are one of my favorites. Basically a biscuit made with coconut milk, except that the top is pricked with a fork so it doesn’t rise. Rotary Kicks off December with End of World Marathon By JEFF WHITE Press Officer Rotary Club of Placencia jjeffwhite@gmail.com
The month of December was certainly a busy one for the Rotary Club of Placencia. The events started off with the End of the World Marathon. Thirty-nine runners completed the full marathon and 213 runners completed the half marathon. The organizers of this world class event donate the funds to the Rotary Club
to provide scholarships to students in the district. Chip Lovett (honourary Rotary member), Jennifer Lovett and Dan and Kim Edwards put in a tremendous effort to ensure this event’s success. There was an excellent turnout of Rotary members and existing scholarship students to help with water stations, food and drink as well as greeting the runners at the finish Students fulfill their Rotary scholarship community service commitment at the Pyramid House Water Station. Placencia Rotary Embraces the Christmas Spirit By JEFF WHITE
Santa Claus arrived in Placencia early to make sure that the children of St, John’s, St. Alphonsus and Monkey River schools all got an early Christmas treat. Members of the Rotary Club of Placencia were on hand to help Santa out to make sure his rounds were made. The kids were very excited to see Santa and had fun singing some Christmas songs (with help from Steve Fasano) while enjoying the Christmas treats.
Mel Honik from the Rotary Club of Sylvania, Ohio and Will Mosbay from the E-Club One World arranged for a wide variety school resource centre supplies to be shipped down from the United States. Everything from computers, televisions ,VCRs,
books and toys were donated. Representatives from the various Rotary Clubs including Placencia, Hopkins and Dangriga were on hand to help unload the container and distribute the items to the various schools. Mel and Will then spent two weeks travelling around the area helping to set up the Resource Centres. ▪

on’t ask his real name; Placencia’s most sought after DJ goes by Boneyfide and that’s how he wants to keep it. “Boney” (the only nickname he’ll accept) fondly reminisces how, while growing up in Belize City, his mom used to play a lot of old country, old reggae and golden oldies as she was doing her housework. It instilled in him an appreciation for a different era and a love of music that has never left him. Around the age of 12, he played the role of “Box Boy” to his DJ hero, Presi-D, by carrying the legendary Belizean DJ’s speakers and helping him set up for gigs. Later influenced by the likes of other Belize City greats including Stone Jam, DJ Dolla and DJ Bush, he grew into a position at the city’s popular Krem radio station, where he first began to be recognized in his own right.

Not at all one to shy away from voicing his opinion, DJ Boneyfide considers himself an advocate for this old way of life. He unabashedly believes that partying and the ensuing cacaphony of laughter, shouts and loud musical rhythms are part of Placencia's moving and shaking life source. To those moving to Placencia, he pleads, “Live with us, not against us.” He’s adamant that visitors should be able to experience the Belizean culture in an authentic way, which can mean playing the music loudly in the day time and having a place for people to party after dark. ... And New Staff
There aren't any new faces in the board running the local tourism membership organization for Placencia this year; just a few shifts in positions. Remaining in their voluntary roles to sustain the important work of the Placencia Chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association (PBTIA) are: Salvador "Salva" Zabaneh, who has advanced to chairperson from his previous position as vice chair, Elysia "Ellie" Dial, former treasurer who is now vice chair, Chris Rothing who now serves as treasurer, Arreini Palacio, secretary and Gillian Zabaneh who has maintained her councilor role. Shelly Pollard, Wendy Lemus and Former Chairperson Jodie Yearwood all opted not to run for elections held at the organization's annual general meeting held in November last year inside the Tipsy Tuna Sports Bar. The PBTIA's office at the Placencia Tourism Center also sees the advancement of Shanice Westby to the Executive Director position and the return of Natasha Eiley who now serves as Membership Information Officer. New to the team is Daniella Cardinez working as the PBTIA's Tourism Information Officer. The PBTIA is tasked with planning annual festivals, publishing The Placencia Breeze, facilitating various licensing on behalf of the government's Belize Tourism Board, as well as operating the Placencia Tourism Information Center. A "Herculean" Effort Made 2018 End of the World Marathon and Half Marathon a Massive Success! The End of the World (EOW) Marathon and Half Marathon event continues to grow impressive success each year since its inaugural debut in 2012. Just as founder Chip Lovett had envisioned, the event is gaining popularity among runners all over the world and within Belize for its beautiful route on the Placencia Peninsula, and especially for Runners of all ages participate in the annual event. (Photos by MUZAMANZIE PHOTOGRAPHS) its top-notch organization powered completely by volunteers.
Furthermore, the event has become an effective fund raiser for high school and some college scholarships that are facilitated through the Rotary Club of Placencia for students in the Placencia area. Lovett wrote on the event's FB page. The 2018 EOW Marathon and Half Marathon included 252 finishers representing 11 countries, 20 U.S. states and from all over Belize. As runners do each year, first-time Belizean runner, Javier Matute praised the organization of the event and also stated that he enjoyed the opportunity to meet amazing people. "Will definitely do it again." "It literally 'takes a village' to pull off this complicated event!" wrote Lovett. "And this year's marathon took place on a very hot, dry, and sunny day! Special thanks go to our remarkable volunteers: eight talented masseuses, our very cool DJ, the refreshment team, medical personnel, registration and start teams, our timers, course and traffic teams, photographers, the numerous water station volunteers, water station competition judges, scholarship student volunteers, finish line staff, Fun Run coordinators, and our generous sponsors. Without the dedication and hard work of this small army the race could not succeed. Each and every one of you who participated in this marathon, from runners to volunteers, should be very proud. Thank you all so very much for your support of the End of the World Marathon and Half Marathon." â–Ş
Dan Edwards has been handling complicated event logistics throughout the event's seven years. Many local residents come forward to assist however they can each year. Frankie Gagliano's latest head turner is a rebel's nod to the more risqué side of Caribbean culture.

rankie Gagliano is a middle-aged man with sun-weathered skin, a grovely voice tinged with satirical humor and a twinkle in his eye that matches his lack of appreciation for propriety. With a unique way of conceptualizing restaurants, he has developed a reputation as an industry expert in all things food and beverage. He first arrived in Placencia in 1968. On summer break from his second year at university, he sailed here with a group of friends and quickly developed a case of what he calls, “tropical intrigue.” When it came time to leave, he told his friends to go on without him.
and fishing to feed himself, Frankie recounts, speaking in his signature way that is both blunt and eloquent, he eventually went home and returned with a new boat. He says the 112-foot wooden retired coast guard submarine chaser is one that any Belizean over the age of 40 will remember. He named her Fury. In the 1980s, before there was a road, Frankie’s Fury followed the likes of the Heron H, Maya Prince and the Honduran to run the coast as a shuttle and with supplies for the coastal communities of Punta Negra, Yccacos, New Haven Bit, Hopkins, Placencia and Monkey River. He then opened Belize Sailing Charters that offered high end, all inclusive adventure trips that he captained and chef'd. The grandson of two chefs, cooking and hospitality were in his blood. Many on the Peninsula will remember the notorious Ooga Booga and Tiger Beach Club as two of his greater successes, and the list of restaurants and resorts he has built and helped birth is long and notable.
In his latest endeavor, he has opened Afrodite Caffe (Yes. Two fs. And that's AFROdite, not Aphrodite.) on the sidewalk, outside of Tipsy Tuna. As Frankie says, he went with “the space not taken.” He loved the location and allowed the place to evolve After buying a locally built sailboat around the space. He says he asked

In mid-February to mid-March 2018, the CRC in collaboration with Dr. Scoville and Mr. Doherty collected data of the resident and migratory birds around the Placencia Lagoon, which included various morphometric data, muscle and fat examination, blood and fecal smears.
After months of analysis, the CRC and Dr. Scoville confirmed that it was neither bacteria, parasite, In late 2015, the Crocodile Re- nor virus affecting the local avian search Coalition (CRC) began community. observing various water or piscivorous birds ill, dead, or having is- Based on data and behavior of sues with flying or walking around affected birds, Dr. Tellez (CRC) the Placencia Lagoon during our and Dr. Scoville have concluded weekly biodiversity surveys. that algal blooms off the coast We began to observe every threefour months a high rate of ill or dead birds in various locations around the Placencia Lagoon. After one particular night during a routine crocodile eyeshine survey in October 2017 in which a bird just fell out of the mangroves and plunged into the stream (almost hitting our kayak) and never resurfacing, the CRC realized it was time to take action and investigate what was causing the unusual behavior, illness and mortality in the local avian community. We consulted with the Belize Bird Networking Group who agreed that an investigation was highly warranted to assess if there was a virus, bacteria, parasite, or something human-related (such as pesticide run-off) impacting the health of the birds around the Placencia Lagoon. Thanks to the Belize Bird Rescue (BBR), the CRC was put in contact with two avian experts from the United States. Dr. Sheila Scoville is currently a professor at the Eastern Virginia Medical School in the Department of Pathology and Anatomy, which includes a background in investigating the effects of environmental contamination on avian health. Peter Doherty is a freelance field ornithologist, and builder of custom nets to capture birds for ornithological research (Hawkseye Nets).
of Placencia Lagoon caused a bio-accumulation of bio-toxin in the piscivorous birds. We are currently working on a scientific manuscript for publication.
Since the end of February 2018, in which CRC documented at least 22 dead Brown Pelicans within less than two weeks, in addition to several ill pelicans, it’s been “quiet” in regards to birds in distress. However, as of December 28, 2018 CRC has been alerted about several dead or ill brown pelicans, mainly juveniles, along the Peninsula. It would seem something is affecting the brown pelican population once again. Although the brown pelicans are illustrating signs similar to previous year mortality events, we cannot conclude at this moment that this is the result of another algal bloom as we need more data and evidence. If anyone has any information that they can provide the CRC, or if they have observed an ill or dead bird, please do not hesitate to contact us via our Facebook Page, email (marisa.tellez@crcbelize.org), or call 670-5852 or 660-4655. Your information can provide vital data to CRC, Belize Bird Rescue (BBR), and Forest Department to identify the culprit, and rescue birds in enough time See SICK BIRDS on page 24

Two Riversdale Beach Women Receive Certificate in Culinary Arts and Hospitality at Georgetown Technical High School In partnership with MCCAP through the Belize Fisheries Department, Georgetown Tech is leading the field forward. By GRETCHEN SMITH Contributing Writer

out the entertainment guide on page 3). With starting rates of BZ$400 (and a mandatory 50% deposit) he is also available for public and private parties.
Brice, Ellie and Cassie Dial of Barefoot Beach Bar have declared the DJ an honorary member of their family. Boney's mother known locally as Nurse Reynolds, gives her son an annoyed look as she sits in his passenger seat. Boney first came to Placencia 23 years ago to join her when she worked at the Placencia Village Health Center.
His philosophy, as a DJ, is that party is in everyone’s life, “doesn’t matter what you do or what religion you adhere to - party is in some part of your life.” In a melting pot like Placencia where so many cultures and ages and walks of life live in one place, he considers it his job to bring everyone together by blending all types of music and guiding the party to a place of shared joy. Because of that, he’ll take your request but can’t promise to play it. Music is so paramount to this DJ, that you won’t find him talking into the microphone and competing with the tracks. Boney’s much more altruistic challenge is always to get that one person who is sitting down to get off his or her seat and join others on the dance floor. That’s a mission accomplished in his books because he knows he’s given them a Boneyfide reason to party. ▪ For bookings, contact, 615-7591. DJ Boneyfide takes his job seriously as a DJ, but he's a well known social media comedian. Follow him on Facebook at your own risk.

This year we had a lot of much needed donations. With 40 to 50 runners we need about 80 to 100 pairs of shoes a year, which cannot be purchased here or the runners simply don't have access to them. This means we need a constant flow of shoes for the kids, and this past year we have been blessed with not only a good flow of shoes, but also socks. We still, as always, have a continual need as the little feet grow to big feet and shoes wear out. We also have received much needed socks, clothing and more. The love from the community here and literally all over the world has made this club feel blessed. We would like to encourage everyone to come see us on a Saturday morning, maybe
even join us for a run. Any age can participate. For anyone who is looking at how they can help with either donations, (We are in need of fruit money, new shirts and more water bottles, as well as shoes.) please contact me on the Seine Bight Running Club page or at gregvwandas@gmail.com. With all the children we have coming out we are also looking for more volunteers on Saturday mornings, and you don't have to be an athlete to help! Volunteers will also be needed at all the races we have. It takes about 25 volunteers for each race! Once again, profound thanks to all at the Seine Bight Running Club for all the support, both with donations and the continual encouragement of all our endeavors. Without this we would not exist. â–Ş

In addition to his infused rums - habanero, island spice and demerara (brown sugar), he also has a 110-proof aged rum made with homemade charcoal. As someone who has become one with locals and helped blaze Placencia’s development, Frankie is eager to see Placencia become an international boutique destination and intends to cultivate Afrodite Caffe in a way that complements that vision. Strike up a conversation with Frankie and as you sip on some Big Titty, ask him about how he survived at sea for three days after the Fury went down, then ask him to tell you some stories about the real life swashbuckling pirate history of Placencia. And hey, if you feel you need it, ask him for the only Wifi password in the village that could rival the crass rebelliousness of Rick’s Cafe.▪
