PLACENCIA SIDEWALK ARTS FEST: A HIT! The Placencia Sidewalk Arts & Music Festival, organized by the Placencia Chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association, just might be the fastest growing event in Belize. What the nowdisbanded Placenica Arts Association started 10 years ago as a showcase for local Placencia talent is now a full blown arts extravaganza seeing the participation of a wide range of artists who travel to the Peninsula from all over Belize. On February 16 and 17 over 40 artists registered for a spot along the historic Placencia sidewalk. The event provided a cornucopia of creativity with exhibitors offering everything from world class artwork to kitschy souvenirs. Visitors were able to choose from picture frames made of cohune bark, wood carvings, pumice carvings and hand-blown glass. There was Maya art like woven jipijapa baskets, jewelry made from precious stones, pearls and seeds to recycled plastic and ornate wrought metals. Paintings ran the gamut depicting marine life, village life, natural scenes and abstract concepts. Soaps, massage oils and other natural spa essentials rounded out the home beauty category while kitchen concoctions such as hot sauces, jellies and mustards complemented the various meals on sale. And unlike fixtures sitting on a shelf in a giftshop, at the Placencia Sidewalk Arts and Music Festival visitors can see most artists demonstrating their talents while bringing their pieces to life. With artists like Emmeth Young and Pen Cayetano, the live music kept flowing throughout the two-day event. At Emmeth’s tent, visitors could even take a few drumming lessons from the masters. And at Pen’s, visitors were treated to spontaneous musical collaborations when veteran musicans such as Belize Music Ambassador Titiman Flores joined in on drums and others shook maracas and played other instruments. Other performances included leading artists from Sabal Studio Productions in Seine Bight playing punta and gospel, Tropical Vibes with reggae, Bilal Sunni Ali on saxophone accompanied by Emmeth Young on drums, Keith and Kathy with a few Frank Sinatra renditions and Margaret Mims providing soothing folk music at Miss Goodies’ coffee shop. In addition to great music and crafts, visitors enjoyed tasty food prepared by small vendors on site, as well as ice cold Heineken beers, signature Old Master cocktails and other beverages. By all accounts, the festival was a resounding success for both participating artists and organizers who lucked out with perfect weather despite talk of rain. Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department 6th Annual Benefit “A Taste of the Peninsula” The Peninsula Volunteer Fire Department will once again host A Taste of the Peninsula Saturday, March 9th at Tipsy Tuna. The popular annual event is our signature fundraiser for this essential community service. In order to improve our event we are returning to our original format of providing a “taste” of many dishes by offering a wide array of savory appetizers & starters, as well as an assortment of tasty desserts. This year you’ll find a separate station outdoors for each restaurant and another station for food donations from individuals, each one clearly identified with a placard. In exchange for your entrance ticket at the gate, you’ll receive food coupons to “spend” at whichever stations you wish. Scholar Says Placencia Can do More to Market Belizean Food By Jolie Pollard Executive Director, Placencia Chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association, director@placencia.com It’s no secret that tourism on the Placencia Peninsula is growing … and so is the quantity, quality and variety of restaurants. But as more curious foodies visit our shores, are we giving them an indigenous food adventure to match? Is Placencia taking advantage of the diverse offerings available in Belizean cuisine, which spans Creole, Mestizo, Maya, East Indian, Garifuna and other cultures? One ambitious young Belizean Fulbright scholar set out to investigate just how Belizean food is being presented to the international consumer visiting the Peninsula . Thirty-two-year-old Lyra Spang was raised on the coast of Toledo in southern Belize on an organic cacao farm. She credits the experience for developing her great appreciation for food and with her family’s influence – an unquestionable value for the cultural traditions of food. Spang is pursuing a Ph.D. in anthropology with a concentration in food studies at Indiana University in the USA. For the past year, she has been living in Placencia and working on her dissertation, an academic pursuit that may also help local food investors tap the economic potential of the growing culinary sector of the global tourism market. Throughout her research and her many interviews, Spang discovered that many Belizeans tend to have regional and cultural divisions in their knowledge of food; for example, a Creole living in Placencia Village might have never heard of a Maya dish called “chukwa” – a sweet, hard biscuit prepared with fresh corn masa and sugar and found in villages just an hour away. Similarly, newly arrived proprietors of Gringo oriented establishments might have no knowledge of the flavorful fish stew called “hudut” served at Vern’s Kitchen in the Garifuna village of Seine Bight. Spang says that closing these gaps and developing an understanding and awareness of the different foods outside our familiar zones within Belize can help us to better serve the international consumer. “We should all have a knowledge of the diversity of food in Belize. This ties into the cultural tourism that the Belize Tourism Board is promoting,” says Spang. Spang also feels that Belizeans should have a greater appreciation for their food at home. “People need to be encouraged to try and look at their food with a more adventurous eye and not assume that tourists won’t want to try it,” she says. “Most cultural groups in Belize tend to undervalue their food. We seem to think that tourists aren’t interested in what we eat at home.” And after speaking with tourists traveling in and out of the Peninsula, Spang has learned that many visitors think Belizean food is the Creole “rice and beans” or “beans and rice,” which demonstrates a ripe opportunity on the Peninsula for more diverse Belizean food offerings. “Most tourists have a limited idea of what local food is,” she says.

Also, there is difficulty procuring a wide range of ingredients to make risk-taking in menu preparations more attractive. “Most restaurant owners are reluctant to add a new menu item if they can’t obtain certain ingredients,” notes Spang. Her suggestion: “Introduce the items slowly, add them as specials.” Spang also sees opportunity for more effective marketing. “Describe why your food is delicious, where the ingredients come from … tell the tourists why they should try it,” she advises.

Spang does give kudos to Placencia for satisfying many visitors’ desire for fresh seafood, but notes that many other Belizean preparations of seafood are lacking. “How about fresh corned fish served with coconut oil and homemade hot sauce? Or serre? We might just see it as a lunch special now and then, but how about on the menu?” asks Spang. “We need to realize that our tourists aren’t just American. And, they are watching TV shows like Anthony Bourdain’s “No Reservations” . They want more than just burgers and steaks.” In addition to the adventurous tourist supporting the case for expanding Belizean food options, Spang also notes that the Placencia Peninsula is becoming increasingly diverse with workers coming from various regions in the country. “It would be nice to reflect that in our local food offerings,” she says. But there are challenges. Spang concedes that generally, people often aren’t knowledgeable about the diversity of foods available in the country, which

And while the Peninsula can do more to market an accurate representation of Belizean food to visitors, Spang acknowledges that Belize in general, has grown by leaps and bounds in having pride about our food since we won Independence from Great Britain in 1981. Food anthropologist Richard Wilk explains Belize’s relatively weak sense of gastronationalism, especially before the tourism industry boomed in the 1990s, in his book “Home Cooking in the Global Village: Caribbean Food from Buccaneers to Ecotourists.” He cites years of colonial rule and its accompanying promotion of imported foods for Belizeans’ reluctance to share their home kitchen preparations with the outside visitor.

C
hances are that if you’re a visitor to the Placencia Peninsula you got here by airplane. And if you’re a local it’s likely that you’re no stranger to the cozy confines of a fourteen passenger Cessna Caravan. So what’s the big deal? The big deal is precisely that it is no big deal. Every day the modern well maintained commuter planes operated by Tropic and Maya Island Air whisk hundreds of passengers to and from Placencia without incident. 365 days a year. On time. In comfort. With their luggage (at least most of the time). The fact that we never hear much about our local airlines is testament to the fact that they do a wonderful job of efficiently funneling ourselves and our valued guests to their favorite destinations in Belize. Despite the excellent road network that allows for a scenic three hour drive from Belize City or the Philip Goldson International Airport, the local airlines remain our lifeline. Between the two carriers they offer as many as a dozen daily flights in each direction and in the case of international travelers coming from the PGIA, will do all they can to avoid stranding visitors whose incoming flights arrive late. In addition to ferrying our tourists the airlines also bring us cargo: everything from this newspaper to that “must have it now” spare part from Belize City—all
with the type of efficiency and courtesy that we do not always associate with the global airline industry. Are Tropic and Maya perfect? Not quite. We would all like lower prices … but at the same time know that when we take a licking at the gas pump so do they. Those intermediate stops between here and wherever we’re going? Yes, we see far too much of Dangriga airstrip but the exciting bird’s eye view of the Stann Creek Valley almost makes up for it. And speaking of excitement, I can remember the days before the Placencia airstrip existed and the only place to land on the peninsula was a tiny grass strip in Maya Beach across the street from what is now Mango’s. It was built by one of the area’s first residents who just happened to be a retired pilot for American Airlines. He owned a little two seat tail wheeler and with no road back then he used the plane to haul supplies. Until a few years ago the remains of the old aircraft could still be found rotting away in the bush. We’ve come a long way since those days and none of that progress came by accident. seaweed. PPCSL and Lisa Carne, the Project Coordinator for the COMPACT grant, will be working together on a proposal to COMPACT for additional funding to address these needs, and expand the number of farms.
The Placencia Producers Cooperative Society Ltd. (PPCSL) was awarded a $90,000 grant from the Community Management of Protected Areas Conservation Programme (COMPACT) in June 2011. The project, titled, “Sustainable and Environmentally Responsible Production of Seaweed (Euchuema isiforme and Gracilaria spp.) in the Marine Areas Adjacent to Placencia Village” was initiated to reduce the fishing pressure in and around the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System-World Heritage Sites. Objectives in the proposal to meet this goal were the establishment of 10 seaweed farms near Placencia, and to train 10 fisherfolk in seaweed cultivation. Since these seaweed species (both are red algae) have been harvested from the wild for decades, their distribution and abundance were greatly reduced. This project is considered sustainable because the farmers have grown enough seaweed they can continuously replant farms from their own stock. The project is fully endorsed by the Belize Fisheries Department, Southern Environmental Association (SEA) and the Placencia Village Council and PPCSL’s relationships with these entities have been greatly strengthened through this work. Placencia Sailor Carlos Villatoro Brings Home Second Silver Medal Carlos Villatoro placed second overall in the Buttonwood Bay Regatta held on Feb. 9 in Belize City. Villatoro, who represented the Placencia Sailing Club, placed second in all five heats of the sailing competition. The regatta was the first for the 2013 season and saw the participation of several young sailors in the Optimist program of the Belize Sailing Association (BzSA). According to the BzSa, all scores will be accumulated throughout the year to determine who will participate in the Nationals in December. Top finishers over the weekend were: First Place: Tony Ricardez Nazarene Pimary School, Belize City Second: Carlos Villatoro, Placencia Sailing Club Third: Trent Hardwick, Belize Sea Scouts Villatoro carries a winning streak since he joined the Placencia Sailing Club qualifying him for nationals in November 2012. He brought home his first medal from the club’s first regatta held at St. George’s Caye in September 2012 where he placed 7th and took the Placencia Sailing Club to the finals. He won his first silver medal at the Corozal Bay Regatta held in Consejo Shores in October 2012.

Placencia Stars in International Publications was paved just two years ago, triggering a boom that transformed this formerly quiet string of fishing villages into globally soughtafter real estate. You drive past hotels and large waterfront houses under frantic construction before reaching the end of the peninsula and the town of Placencia, which still retains plenty of laid-back charm. You settle in at Wendy’s, a beloved 10-year-old restaurant specializing in Creole and Spanish food, and order chirmole, a traditional spicy black bean soup made with chicken and boiled eggs. (See editor’s note.) You round out the meal with the cheese Creole shrimp, which comes in a delicate jack cheese sauce, accompanied by a side of rice cooked in coconut milk. Sated, you shuffle back to the car and drive north for 15 minutes to your next hotel, Robert’s Grove Beach Resort. The most distinctive feature here is a mellow thatched-roof bar at the end of a long pier. It calls. You drop your bags, walk out, grab a seat and nurse a Robert’s Punch: rum, coconut rum and Nance liqueur, plus pineapple and other fruit juices.

Belize scored the February 2013 spot in Hemispheres’ “Three Perfect Days” series, which selects choice activities for a traveler visiting one country/ metropolis for three days. And of course, we agree with the editors at United Airlines that no perfect trip in Belize is complete without a stay in Placencia. Here’s what the Hemisphere’s team had to say about the Peninsula in the following excerpt: ... “The sun is setting as you pull onto the Placencia Peninsula, south of Maya Center. The road here
Staring out over the darkened sea, listening to the waves lap against the pilings and enjoying the stiffening breeze, you’re beginning to grasp the restorative properties of coastal Belize. DAY THREE | Robert’s Grove offers a full breakfast, but given that you’re going to spend most of the day swimming, you opt for coffee and toast at your table by the beach. couple of rudimentary restrooms in a raised wooden shack. It takes about 50 minutes, skittering past a handful of other small islands, to get there. You hop out of the boat and wade through warm, shallow water to the island to strap on your gear. The next hour is spent exploring the nearby coral reefs, occasionally lighting out in pursuit of their many technicolor denizens, including reef sharks, angelfish and the mesmerizing trumpet fi sh. There’s a break for lunch, a traditional Belizean feast of barbecued pork and chicken with beans and rice. You make quick work of it—then promptly fall asleep on the sand.The fi nal leg of your snorkeling excursion takes you out into open water, where some bigger specimens are reputed to lurk. When your guide spots a turtle, you hurl yourself enthusiastically, if inelegantly, over the side and set out in pursuit. There are indeed three giant sea turtles gliding along down there. As you approach the awesome creatures, which are trailed by pilot fish, they seem mildly put out by your presence but also willing to endure it with a kind of tranquil forbearance. Having returned to the resort, you take a quick shower and hop into the car to go back to Placencia. Close to the beach is the Placencia Sidewalk, which once held the Guinness World Record for narrowest main street on earth (it was knocked o ff by the unsightly Spreuerhofstrasse in Reutlingen, Germany). The slender walkway is lined with colorful homes, shops and bars, and you stroll the length of it, greeting friendly passersby and chas ing with artisans hawking their wares. After dinner, you head to the end of the street and turn left. The pavement ends, yielding to sand, and you walk another 10 minutes in the dark along the shoreline until you reach Yoli’s, a laid-back, openair bar overhanging the water. The music is good, a mix of classic and contemporary reggae, and the air is cooling, so you belly up and call for a Belikin as the place fills. Before long, one of the locals involves you in a game involving a brass ring suspended from a string. The aim is to swing the ring across the room and land it on a hook on the far post. You try, fail, try again. Patrons are timing it so they can dance across the room without ge tting hit. The woman asks if you want to make a wager. Sure, you say: one beer. Another favourite find was the handcrafted gelato at Tutti Frutti, which is made daily and rivals the many scoops we sampled in Italy. OBITUARY JOSEPH “JOE” EDWARD GERALD FINKBEINER Joseph “Joe” Edward Gerald Finkbeiner passed away on February 26, 2013. Joe was born in Hastings, Michigan on March 10, 1942, to Clifford and Monica (Anderson). He graduated from Hastings High School in 1960 and studied at Michigan State University. He is survived by his wife of 50 years Sherry (Gilcher). They lived in Kalamazoo, Galesburg, Dimondale, and East Lansing before settling in Eagle, Michigan in 1979. He traveled extensively throughout Central America, Russia, Australia, Great Britain, Canada and the United States. Over the past few years, he spent much time in Placencia, Belize, where they had a second home. He was a grassroots activist and loved politics. He served on the boards for many organizations including ACLU, Democratic Party, and UAW. He was an Eagle Township Constable and EMT. In March 2012, he retired from General Motors where he had worked as an industrial electrician for over 44 years. Joe was outgoing, loyal and always ready to lend a helping hand. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, father- and mother-in-law Gaylen and Emma Gilcher of Battle Creek and a brother-in-law Gill Gilcher of Battle Creek. He will be missed by his three daughters Toni (Michael) Cramer, Kim (Bill) Steinmann, and Joey Small, all of Kalamazoo. He adored his grandchildren: Eric, Emma, and Zachary Cramer; Hanna and Nicholas Steinmann; and Cayesha, Josephine, and Theodore Small. He is also survived by his sister Carole (James) Seeley of Kalamazoo, sister- and brother-in-laws Carol Gilcher of Battle Creek, Martin and Sue Gilcher of Richland, Cheryl and Mark Robinson of Battle Creek, and numerous nieces and nephews. His Mass was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Westphalia. Visitation was on Monday, March 4 at St. Mary’s. Arrangements were entrusted to Lehman Funeral Homes, Portland. Memorial contributions were made to the Gift of Life Foundation and the family encouraged everyone to consider being registered as an organ donor. ▪
