PLACENCIA SIDEWALK AR TS & MUSIC FESTIVAL! FEBRUARY 15-16, 2014 ON THE PLACENCIA VILLAGE SIDEWALK
Placencia Rocks for Christmas Season! Parades both on land and sea, a record-breaking present giveaway, creative restaurant menu offerings, live stage performances and many Santa sightings marked this year’s Christmas celebration on the Placencia Peninsula. Residents say collective community efforts have made this holiday season one of the largest in recent memory.
It’s the Peninsula’s biggest social event of the year and the 2013 edition of the Mistletoe Ball –with over 400 guests-- did not disappoint. The event is the final fundraising event of the year for the Placencia Chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA) and was hosted by the new Belize Ocean Club resort located in the community of Maya Beach.
The holiday cheer kicked off on Dec. 19 with the “Christmas Xtravaganza” at the Tipsy Tuna Beach Bar. Starting at 7 p.m. children and adults performed special Christmas songs for local and visiting families. A Creole version of the 12 days of Christmas was a big hit with spin offs to the traditional lyrics such as, “Three Johnny cakes, two dallah wap and a fry fish in a fry pan.” The event was organized by Tipsy Tuna, Ysela Zabaneh, Tracey Eiley and Kathy Wade with the assistance of DJ BB, Karl Lovell, Marisha Betancourt and The Outlet Youth Center. Collected door fees and monetary donations supported the Placencia Village Council. The following day on Dec. 20, young stars from the Christmas Xtravaganza along with other youth performed at the Placencia Children’s Christmas Show, more popularly known as “Ms. Tracey’s Show” at a packed Placencia Community Center. Mistletoe Ball Sizzles at New Resort
Now in its 14th year, the pre-holiday dinner and dance was held on Saturday, Dec. 14 and tied in with the Belize Ocean Club’s official grand opening weekend. The resort, in conjunction with the Placencia BTIA, provided an evening of fine food, live music, celebrity-style picture taking and beautiful scenery. For veteran Mistletoe enthusiasts it was a triumphant return to a much loved venue where the Ball had been held twice before when the resort was operated as Bella Maya.

The chef for the evening, Gunter Mathieu, prepared a delicious selection of dishes using donations from some of the top food suppliers on the Placencia Peninsula. Products from Country Meats, Royal Mayan Shrimp Farms, Quality Poultry, Zoes’s Fresh Vegetables and Greg’s Fruit Stand created an attractive display at the served buffet stations. Continued on page 2

Placencia Hosts Second of the End of the World Marathon On Sunday, Dec. 8 close to 200 runners traversed the length of the Placencia Peninsula for the second annual “End of the World” Marathon and Half Marathon. Following a successful inauguration in 2012, the event doubled its numbers for 2013 and also saw more competitive runners. The Gonzales siblings from Chetumal, Mexico dominated the event with Vladamir Gonzales placing first overall and Rosa Gonzales placing first in the female division for the full marathon. Andy Gonzales placed first overall in the half marathon and Tania Gonzales finished first in the female division. This was the second win in the End of the World Half Marathon for both Tania and Andy whose family roots tie to Belize and Mexico respectively. And it was the first trip to Placencia for Vladimir and Rosa. “It’s a very easy race,” said Vladimir who had competed in 15 marathons prior to the End of the World Marathon. “The road is flat here,” he added. Vladimir says he plans to represent Belize in this year’s Central American Games.

Meet the Tom Cruise of Placencia
“When he pours, he reigns.” That was the tagline for the hit 1988 film “Cocktail” starring Tom Cruise. It is the true life story, however, for 26year-old Fermin Choc who, travelling north from his home at Turtle Inn’s Beach Bar, has won the latest national bartending competition. In December 2012, the Placencia Breeze ran a front-page story on the young bartender winning the BTB 10th annual Taste of Belize bartending competition which, was held earlier that month. At the time, Choc was 25 and working at the Placencia Hotel. Since then, Choc has continued to enjoy the thrill of competitive mixology. Following his big win at the BTB Awards, Choc competed in a vigorous battle at the Barefoot Beach Bar Traveller’s Rum Bartending Con-

Irahunu Mas Band Debuts in First Belize City Carnival Irahunu Mas Band of Seine Bight Village participated in the grand Belize City Junior Carnival Band Competition held in September. This was the group’s first time competing outside of the Peninsula where it won first place consecutively. According to Band Manager Liz Zai, were it not for road troubles and an unfortunate late start, the group would have probably placed in the top three in Belize City as they impressed many spectators with their creative costumes.

Breeze Feature: “Here Come ’Da Judge” Rand Taylor shares experience on boxing match in Cowpen Village.
E
very once in awhile I’m reminded how truly unique this experience is. Living in Belize is like nothing else in my history on this planet. Last night’s adventure was a pleasant reminder. And I’m still smiling this morning. It all started out easily enough. My neighbor and hiking buddy Ken Ferris knows a young man named Edgar who is a personal trainer here on the peninsula and a very intelligent and motivated young man. He’s become a part of a new groundswell movement here in Belize to start Amateur Boxing on a national scale. He was due to fight in a local contest in a little village about an hour away from my home . The village is named Cow Pen and the name tells it all. It’s a small village set back several miles off the Southern Highway down toward Independence that was originally a large cattle operation importing cattle from Guatemala back in the day. It was owned by one strong family – think The Ponderosa. When the patriarch died the heirs fell out among themselves and the ranch was eventually defunct and in ruins. The only thing left was a huge pen where the cattle were kept before going to market. The old cattle ranch eventually became huge citrus and banana farms, importing workers from throughout Central America. They built their village and chose the obvious name. The village grew and the local language was Spanish, not the official English of Belize. The cultures meshed and the village prospered. The current Village Chairman, Martinez, saw the value in channeling the energy of the young workers into sports like soccer and boxing. He championed the cause and Cow Pen became the area center for the new sport. Edgar was due to fight and Ken wanted to see him perform. He invited me to tag along. And so it began. We arrived just after 6 p.m. after working our way through several miles of a muddy maze of tracks dimly cut through fields of brush and grass. Even Edgar was not sure exactly how to get to the remote location of the event. After a few false turns we managed to find the location. It wasn’t what you might expect. It was an open field next to a small concrete Community Center on the far edge of the little village. All around it was acres of mud and grass. Four people were laboring to complete the temporary construction of “The Ring.”
blue plastic tarp like the ones used to cover loads on the big dump trucks. Four poles were pounded in at the corners, ropes were tied between the poles, a larger tarp then stretched over the ring on a metal frame about 10 feet in the air to give some sketchy protection from the rain, and two bright light bulbs hung from the top of the frame and connected with an extension cord that ran all the way back to the little building. The two lights were plugged in and the ring was lit for the fight. But there was no one else there. Just us and the ring masters. The fights were due to begin at 7 p.m. and it was already 6:30. No seats for the hoped for spectators, just that one bare ring in the center of an empty field. It looked as though this was going to be a long night – or a very short one. We did what we could to help, talked to ringmasters (one of whom was the village chairman, Martinez) and tried to visualize a boxing match actually taking place here. I walked out to the ring and moved around its surface. It was like a bad road with more potholes than pavement. It was very uneven and dangerously slippery with moisture. The whole thing gave off an aura of imminent disaster. Edgar did the same and seemed pleased with the effort. This was grass roots sports at the underground level. But you had to admire their grit and determination to make something out of nothing. We Americans take so much for granted. About 7 p.m. a few more people arrived. One woman came with a table, several pots and pans, and a basket filled with corn tortillas. She would be selling chicken ‘tacos’ to the hoped for crowd. Then the beer and soft drinks arrived and were placed in a huge metal trough and covered with ice. Then a local DJ arrived with his speakers and mic. Martinez explained that after the fights there would be a big dance. By 7:30 there were perhaps 50 people on the scene. Most of them had arrived by bicycle. Then a few more pickup trucks. By 8 p.m. there were maybe 100 people. Eight of the ten boxers had finally arrived. They looked like young men in their late teens. But at my age, everyone looks like a teenager.
Then the girls began to arrive, dressed to the hilt for the dance. The boys puffed out their chests and began posturing for the girls’ benefit. It was reminiscent of a high school dance anywhere in the world. The ring was a home-made affair But it was more friendly than most. consisting of about a hundred sand Everyone was in a festive mood and bags laid out in a rough square with welcomed us with open arms into sawdust layered on top to try to give their community. Shrimp Farm Owner Warns of Threats Posed by NCL Harvest Caye Project Continued from Front Page ter is in this area. This facility not only provides seed shrimp for this large farm but also for many other small farms in the area. A cruise ship development of this size with large requirements for sewage and waste water discharge could surely contaminate the water source for this operation and could risk the closure of the farm.
This is also why we ask all resorts and restaurants in the country not to buy shrimp that is suspect of source, possibly being imported illegally from neighboring countries, that could cause these same problems for us. Please buy shrimp that has only been processed in a certified facility in Belize. Do this also to make sure your shrimp is hygienically
ardous seafood. We are also concerned that a malfunction or poor design in the cruise port’s sewage treatment system could also increase total coliform and fecal coliform levels in the area near the shrimp farm. If the levels are in excess of what is safe for food production our product would be
The Belize Shrimp Growers Association is presently in the process of an environmental audit with the Aquaculture Stewardship Council which is backed and partially funded by the World Wildlife Fund. This whole process is costing the association over US$1,000,000. Belize has earned a worldwide reputation for developing sustainable methods for culturing shrimp allowing producers to command a premium price even when markets are being flooded with cheap, unsustainably produced shrimp, mostly from Asian countries. Belize is also free of many of the viral diseases that plague Asia and other parts of Mexico, Central and South America by a unique geographical position on the Caribbean and strict import laws regarding shrimp products. It is most likely that the ship’s source of seafood is Asian based. If the Harvest Caye development maintains a food service area for the cruise tourists and waste from the kitchen is discharged into our area it could contaminate our stocks with diseases from other countries. This could serve as a vector that could be difficult to control by BAHA, which by law now restricts the imports of all shrimp products from other countries because of the risk of introducing a virus into our environment that could easily threaten the health of our whole industry.
the laboratory nearby and reduce the productivity of the facility. A development on Harvest Caye could surely threaten the viability of our industry and threaten the jobs of a large segment of the population in the south. The processing plants that produce a quality exported crop are one of the largest employers of women in the south, many whom are the sole wage earner in the home. This would negate any positive job increase that the cruise industry would promise. Our employees have been trained internally over the years in areas that the cruise industry would most likely not employ them. On-site training has taken many people without education and developed them into employees with year round jobs. Please consider the developed aquaculture industries that are in place and do not threaten them for a new industry that could destroy a well-established, sustainable and internationally reputable industry that brings much needed foreign exchange, employs over a thousand Belizeans in good-paying and dependable jobs, with a real opportunity for advancement.
The local shrimp industry in Belize provides direct employment to over 1,000 people. (CARDELLI SHRIMP FARMS)
clean and safe for your customers. The employees of the processing plants work very hard to assure the product is safe for consumption both locally and for export. We have three processing facilities in the country: Paradise Farms, Belize Aquaculture and Aqua Mar Belize Ltd. The packing box will indicate the source of the shrimp. Anyone selling shrimp loose from the back of a truck may be selling stolen or illegally imported product. Please keep our industry thriving and sustainable instead of saving a few dollars on cheap and possibly haz-
banned from export markets. Being a resident of Big Creek for many years I know of the sand flea population in the area. Unfortunately this area is affectionately known as the sand flea capital of Belize. We are afraid that to appease the tourists getting off the ship that a large amount of pesticides could be sprayed into the area every morning before the cruise tourists arrive. The toxin would kill the larval shrimp, they are very sensitive to even low levels of pesticides, and also affect the breeding shrimp in
The Belize Shrimp Growers Association has met with Minister Godwin Hulse and explained our concerns to him. He assures us that there will be strict monitoring of all environmental concerns that could affect us. He has also informed us that we would have representation on an environmental monitoring board to assure strict compliance. I only hope that if the project goes through and the problems we have presented start to occur that there will be some way to stop operations until the problems are solved. Our fear is that once the problems start that it will be difficult to shut down cruise operations until changes in procedure are put in place. Once the virus is present we will be unable to get rid of it. And once our quality is compromised it will be difficult to assure people that it will not occur again. These are the problems we face when small countries deal with large corporations. ▪

The Placencia Breeze ǁ January 2014 ǁ Page 14
How’s Your Day? Does anybody remember that you passed their way? Does anyone recall that you spoke to them today? The day is almost over and when the toiling time is through – who is there to utter now a kindly word of you? Today that’s nearly over and about to quickly pass, Have you helped a single human of the many that you’ve passed? Is a single heart rejoicing over what you did or said? Do the ones whose hopes were fading now with courage look ahead? Well, did you waste the day or lose it – was it well or sorely spent? Did you leave a trail of kindness, or a scar of discontent? Because the goal you’re after is to take their frowns and turn them into laughter … So as you close your eyes in slumber do you think your “inner” voice with confidence now will say – “Yes; you can check the blank on the positive side – cause you’ve lived and shared quite well today…” 2013 – Placencia’s Bob the Poet

In addition to generous sponsors, the End of the World Marathon and Half Marathon would not have been possible without its many dedicated volunteers. According to volunteer coordinator Wende Bryan, organizers set up 15 water stations plus the main tent, manned by 100 volunteers. Tents at the finish line were equipped with a runner’s lounge featuring medical teams, massage therapists, an energy food bar and beverage station with plenty of tables and chairs. Marathon fans were also accommodated with music, a Belikin beer bar also serving water and juice and Old Master rum bar and a food booth set up by the Placencia Sailing Club. This year’s Placencia Marathon is set for Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014 and is projected to be an even bigger event as runners all over the world continue to blog about the joys of running down the Placencia Peninsula. Frontline Award Nominee Tells Story Stefano Ragagnin was among 12 finalists representing the Placencia Peninsula in the Belize Tourism Board’s 2012 Annual Tourism Awards. He was nominated for Frontline Person of the Year, which was awarded to Natalie Ranguy of Chabil Mar. Some were surprised at his nomination since Ragagnin doesn’t really work at a front desk for any hotel on the Peninsula. However, what many don’t know is that Ragagnin manages over nine vacation rentals for their owners and provides front line customer service daily to guests and prospective renters.
Ragagnin first moved to Placencia in 1996 from Milan, Italy. It was a dramatic move and many of his colleagues and friends thought he was making an ill-informed decision. He had grown tired of the weather in Milan and the high stress environment working in Italy’s advertising industry. “I felt like I was living in a black and white film sometimes watching the winter sky from my office window,” he said. He took every opportunity possible to leave Milan and travel around the world. On weekends during the warmer months from March to October, he said he would ride his motorcycle
to a coastal town in Italy and jump in the sea. While he enjoyed his international travels and sojourns in Italy, Ragagnin said he knew it was time for him to make a permanent move to a completely different kind of life.
The inspiration to move came from a television documentary featuring a ‘Milano’ who had started a new beginning in the French Poynesian islands. The man had suffered tragedy at his Pacific home, but stated in his interview, “It is Belize Tourism Board 2012 Frontline Person of the Year award nominee Stefano Ragagnin better to be depressed stands alongside business partner Nicoletta Sala in front of Colibri House in Placencia under the sun than Village. under the grey sky of a life full of material things, but no soul,” As of publication, Colibri stands Milano.” Ragagnin said Ragagnin recalled. at No. 2 on TripAdvisor out of 24 the response never left B&Bs and Inns. his memory and while he Ragagnin was not very impressed while was not depressed, he had making his trip down to Placencia while As for his old life in Milan, Ragagnin become sad and frustrated traveling the bumpy, dusty, dirt roads. SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM UPDATE: Once again, the Rotary club of Edmonton West in Canada has very generously given the Rotary Club of Placencia $8,000 for scholarships. This is the fourth year in a row that they have supported our program. In addition, every year they give Independence High School (IHS) $4,000 for their scholarship program. This money will allow our Club to add two more fouryear students for the school year 2014-2015. Our club will also be supporting another student, so we will be adding three more four-year scholarships for the coming school year. That will bring the total number of Rotary Scholars for that year up to 14! Also, this year two students were left without scholarships after the water board changed management. Luckily, Rotary had two spots available from a grant from Canada so we were able to offer both studentsa two-year scholarship each. As part of our scholarship program, we pay for six CXC exams per student. Every student planning on going on to 6th Form or to university must pass at least six CXCs. Many businesses look for grades on these exams as well. Each exam has a cost of $35 plus many of the exams have additional fees. We are currently planning on $500 per student for the CXCs. Many students take more than six exams. Rotary was

In Need of Funds, The Outlet Youth Center Relaunches Golf Cart Raffle Seeking a more affordable location, The Outlet Youth Center recently moved its operations between the Good Vibes Night Club and Pickled Parrot to a space at the Placencia Community Center. According to co-founder Aline Habib, the new location was full of old rusty medical equipment, broken pipes and windows, and exposed wires and required extensive renovation. Habib said the needed renovation depleted their funds and the Center is left with bills. Habib is hoping that money generated from a relaunched fundraising campaign through the golf cart raffle will alleviate their financial pressures. “By purchasing raffle tickets, you will help Placencia’s youth, and you will walk away with 360 times your money or a brand new golf cart!” Habib said.
In addition to the Golf Cart Raffle The Outlet is also preparing to launch an online fundriasing campaign on indigogo.com. Habib says with enough financial support, the new center will be complete with an indoor library and study lounge, a computer lab, an arts and crafts section, and an upcoming outdoor courtyard and recreation area for kids and teens to enjoy after school. For information on how to donate, volunteer, or be part of The Outlet Youth Center, contact Aline Habib at 670-3665 or placenciayouthcent er@gmail.com or visit their Facebook page for updates. Habib asks for everyone’s patience during their transition period and says she and her team are preparing for an official relaunch in February 2014.▪
Cardinez says some parents on the Peninsula aren’t too pleased seeing an officer on the school grounds and find him to be an intimidating presence for the children. Here Come ‘Da Judge Continued from Page 23 match who would be who. More people arrived, the speakers blared some generic music, and then the announcer greeted everyone in Spanish and announced the beginning of the evening’s events. The official Belize Amateur Boxing Association fights scheduled for 7 p.m. began right on time – 9:15. The first two fighters were introduced to loud cheers from the crowd. A sexy young lady in a very sexy outfit paraded around the ring with the placard announcing Round 1. The referee took his place in the center of the ring and the two fighters received their perfunctory repetition of the rules and things got underway. The fighters wore protective headgear and 14- ounce gloves to minimize bodily damage. That seemed entirely appropriate since this was all supposed to be fun. They would still punch away at each other with enthusiasm but the probability of any permanent damage was minimized. There was a slight delay while one of the locals was sent to fetch a cowbell from his home because the original bell planned for the evening was broken. He arrived in a few minutes with the bell and a large crescent wrench to hit it with. The referee gave the signal, the timekeeper whacked the bell and clicked his stopwatch, and the fight began. It was wild from the first minute on. Technique was secondary to ferocity. The two young men flailed at each other with total abandon and total commitment. The rounds went back and forth but by round four one guy stood out clearly the winner. All three of us agreed on the winner. The next three matches gradually improved in style points. There were a couple of split-decisions but we were all three within a point or two of each other. The crowd seemed in general agreement with our judging and no tomatoes were

So the referee went into the little hut and donned his gear to give Edgar someone to fight with. Another man from the crowd who had some experience was called upon to referee the match. It was a very good match. Both fighters were also trained in kick- boxing and knew similar techniques. They were by far the best in style. It was a rigorous contest and ended in a draw. They hugged each other at the end with genuine affection and appreciation. The announcer thanked us by name and the crowd gave us a mild cheer. Afterward all of the boxers and CHART 1. We had made some new friends. The crowd moved toward the small building where the dance was to begin and we took our leave. Edgar and his friends wanted to stay for the dance and arranged another ride home so we could exit gracefully. Since it was after midnight Ken and I eagerly bid a fond farewell to the little group and made our way out to my little pickup for the long ride home. We had to negotiate a now crowded muddy field to find my truck and maneuver it out of the field and onto the tiny mud road that was our exit route. With no local guide in attendance we soon became lost in the dark among the many similar tracks and found ourselves disoriented as to where the actual highway might be. We found one local who was still up and he pointed us the right way. We were soon back on pavement and on our way home. It had been an evening to remember. And, of course, it was raining heavily. ▪
