Placencia, Something for Everyone Placencia, not just another pretty beach. Yes, there are fourteen miles of beautiful swimming beaches dotted with palm trees and dozens of white sand cayes just off the coast on the Caribbean Sea, but there are also Maya Ruins, the Cockscomb Jaguar Reserve and many more inland adventures. In February you can see hundreds of scarlet macaws in the wild at Red Bank, or take a Monkey River trip to visit with the howler monkey and maybe spot manatees and dolphins on the way. Interested in learning how chocolate is made, you can visit one of the local Maya chocolate makers and visit a spice farm.

Diving, snorkelling, kayaking and paddle boarding, just a few activities to explore and enjoy in Placencia. Check out our center page for the list of BTIA tour operators, restuarants, hotels and services. But it will be the amazing Placencia people that will have you making a return trip. So, whether hanging out in a hammock is your thing or tubing down a tropical river, your visit to Placencia will be amazing!

Local festivals are always colourful and fun. The Placencia Sidewalk Art Festival is February 11th and 12th hosting Belizean artists, chocolate makers and local music. Speaking of food, Placencia Peninsula has many diverse and award winning restaurants. Local rice and beans, gelato, Italian, Chinese, Mexican, fun beach bars and fine dining, the choice is endless. You can also take cooking classes with a local cook and learn some of their secrets. But water sports and trips are what keeps you cool! Crocodile Research Coalition Update By Dr. Marisa Tellez Kohlman On December 9, 2016, the CRC launched the nationwide Morelet’s crocodile (Crocodylus moreletii) population survey with an appearance on The Morning Show as well as leading a workshop with several participating organizations. Two students from our Next Gen Croc program in partnership with Ocean Academy Caye Caulker accompanied us on The Morning

Show to discuss their scientific and outreach efforts in conserving the local population of crocodiles, in addition to attending the workshop. The last thorough or countrywide survey of Morelet’s crocodile was conducted in the mid–1990s (the 1st Crocodile Research Renaissance). We anticipate that this survey will provide a better understanding of the current population of Morelet’s crocodiles in Belize, assisting the government in implementing the appropriate management that can contribute to their conservation, while simultaneously ensuring

the safety of communities by mitigating human-crocodile conflict. Furthermore, the continual crocodile training and participation of organizations (such as SEA) across the country will increase the number of individuals skilled at handling crocodiles, ensuring rapid response to problematic croc calls in addition to spreading further education on how to co-exist with these archaic predators. Head to the CRC Facebook page for survey updates (as well as all things croc!).

continual crocodile management program, the CRC needs you (the community) to help us out! Part of this survey includes a community survey in which the key stakeholders are interested in understanding the communities’ perception of crocodiles and much more. Please head to the CRC website to learn more (www. crocodileresearchcoalition.org), and don’t forget you can participate in collecting data via our Citizen Science Program! Come join us in this 2nd Crocodile Research Although we are confident in the Renaissance! success of this survey fostering a

From the Fire Hearth: Healthy Eating By Lyra Spang

Happy New Year and welcome to 2017! New Years for many means resolutions to eat healthier. Healthier eating means consuming less processed and packaged foods, less white flour and sugar, fish and chicken instead red meat and lots more vegetables and fruits. Tropical regions of the world host the most plant and animal diversity on the planet, yet in Placencia it is common to hear visitors and immigrants bewail the lack of their favourite vegetables at village produce stands. Placencia Peninsula has long been known for fishing, not farming, and most newcomers and visitors are unaware that at one time villagers had to pick a number and stand in line to buy vegetables at Wallen’s, then Placencia’s only grocery store. With today’s paved roads and a multitude of trucks bringing in fruits and vegetables from around the country, there is a lot more to choose from. Keep in mind that most produce is grown in Belize, and that means that favourites like mangoes and avocados are hard to find out of season. Mixed salad greens may still be rare, but there are plenty of delicious options that are consistently available. Chicken in frozen form is found at every grocery store. Remove the fatty skin before cooking if you are trying to keep your cholesterol down. Fish and seafood are sold at the Placencia Producers Cooperative located right across from the main village pier. You can also buy right from the fishermen who come in to the pier, typically between 330 and 5 in the evening, although their arrival is never guaranteed. It’s always good to know a couple fishermen that you can call ahead. What about vegetables? Broccoli and cauliflower, (both full of vitamins, fibre and cholesterol lowering compounds), can be found in plastic bags in the refrigerator section of most grocery stores. Sometimes bok choi, mustard greens, bean sprouts and green onions show up there are well, so keep your eyes peeled or ask the grocer when they will come in. At village produce stands you will find another member of the brassica family, the lowly cabbage. Often dismissed for its humble history as

a peasant food and the unpleasant doors it can develop when it is overcooked, cabbage is full of nutrients and contains compounds that help to lower cholesterol and prevent bladder, colon and prostate cancer. A great addition to stir fries and stews, or try stuffed cabbage leaves. I like a tropical coleslaw with cabbage, pineapple, cilantro and a simple dressing of lime juice, olive oil, salt, pepper and our local brown sugar. Its crisp texture makes

is a wonderful base for a chopped salad. While you are picking up your cabbage, try some chayote or chocho (Sechium edule). This squash-like, avocado shaped member of the gourd family is high in folates and delicious stuffed and baked, in a cho cho-cheese pie or even raw in salads. Instead of rice or potatoes, try out some local root vegetables: sweet and starchy cassava (Manihot esculenta), floury coco-yam (Colocasia or Xanthosoma spp.) or bright purple yampi (Dioscorea spp.) are all fun and healthy alternatives. And if there are any breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) in season, make sure to buy one. Breadfruit originated in the tropical south pacific and was brought to the Caribbean as food for slaves during the colonial era. Despite its sad history, it is jam packed full of nutrients.

While its texture and flavour is starchy when green, breadfruit is actually a complete protein, and is high in calcium, iron, copper, magnesium and potassium. When its available you can get delicious fried breadfruit at Barefoot Bar-just ask if it’s on the menu. Or grow one in your yard-it tolerates salt and sand as well as a coconut tree. Another tropical nutrient super star that grows right on the peninsula is moringa (Moringa oleifera). A

calcium, magnesium, manganese and phosphorus. What many neglect to mention is that it tastes good. The young leaves of this small tree have a pungent peppery taste similar to watercress or arugula. Raw they make a good addition to a salad, but they are often cooked or dried, powdered and used as a seasoning or food additive. In Placencia Village you can buy Moringa leaf powder at Bliss Boutique and Omars Creole Grub. Looking for more greens? Ask your produce stand to bring you callaloo, (Amaranthus viridus), a nutrient packed green from the amaranth family that is eaten across the Caribbean, and Chaya, (Cnidoscolus acontifolius), the leaves of a small shrub native to the Yucatan and grown in Maya communities across Belize. Make sure to cook Chaya for at least 15 minutes before eating as it contains hydrocyanic acid that disappears with heat. It is a good source of protein, calcium, iron and antioxidants.

Don’t forget seasonings while you are purchasing your healthy ingredients. In downtown Placencia Village, look for a Maya lady selling jars of fresh ground turmeric and smoked chili pepper on a table 20 yards from the bus shelter across the street from MnM hardware. Grown in Toledo District, turmeric is a powerful antioxidant and chili pepper, well it’s just a delicious small tree native to the Indian sub- excuse to add some spice to your continent, it’s now being promoted healthy life! as a way to fight malnutrition across Lyra Spang is owner/guide of the tropical world. Amik Kil Ha’ in Maya Beach By Amanda Harris Our connection with Belize began 30 years ago when my husband Jim made a connection with Bob Gayer, a visionary met through his law practice in Vancouver, Canada. Bob was the original owner and developer of Maya Beach in the mid-60’s when he purchased a huge swath of land from just south of Coco Plum, north to just south of the Belize Ocean Club. Bob was about 50 years ahead of his time; he imagined shops, schools, luxury hotels with heli-pads and a thriving community that did not materialize in his lifetime. Beavers Away! Based on true story of beavers being parachuted into the Idaho wilderness in 1948, it is packed with interesting info about beavers, their critical role as a keystone species and ecosystem engineers, and how they can help in the fight against climate change. Beavers Away! is a great gift for kids of all ages! It is available at itascabooks.com, amazon. com, Water Street Books in Williamstown, MA, A great book by Jennifer Lovett, one of Maya Beach’s part time residents.

We now own Plantation Palms Limited, Bob’s original company which he incorporated in 1964 in what was then British Honduras. We are developing part of the land it still holds which was subdivided in 1968. We have named our development Amik Kil Ha’, which is a rough translation from Q’eqchi’ Mayan meaning ‘Friendly Waters’. Our development is located across from

the fabulous Maya Beach Bistro, in behind A.L. Construction. We currently have 24 waterfront lots for sale. Each one borders a 40 foot wide canal that lead out to the gorgeous and rich Placencia Lagoon which is home to manatees, and many fish and birds. Friendly Waters is a true summation of the development. It is peaceful, full of wildlife, has gorgeous trees, calm channels of water, and, being tucked away from the main road, is very quiet. The views of the Mayan Mountains are spectacular and the sunsets bathe Amik Kil Ha’ in a golden light that is gorgeous and soothing. We are working to create a community at Amik Kil Ha’. We are not encouraging people to purchase lots to hold for an investment. Amik Kil Ha’ will be a place where people live; either renting, owning or vacationing. A place of energy and life! Within a 5 minute walk or bike ride, one finds restaurants, cafe’s,a bowling alley, groceries, bars, a gym and more! Maya Beach is an established community 8 miles north of the tip of the Placencia Peninsula, which many people call home, both full or part time. We have a stunning bamboo house for sale, as well as bare serviced lots for you to dream your own dream home on!

And Eve Said “To Hell with GOD” This book was written for adult readers as it deals with the various reasons why so many marriages and relationships fail. The author, Sal Rivers, proposes several theories on the reasons why, beginning with the existence of a female Goddess, present at creation as to why the men and women are ensnared in the “battle of the sexes” today. The readers can actually go on the Publisher's website, Archway Publishing.com or Amazon.com and read the introduction, preface, table of contents and the first two chapters without commitment. Sal Rivers is a part time resident of Placencia.

New Year New Start Capoiera Besouro

In the 16th century in Brazil, African slaves created a martial art infused with dance, song, and instruments as they were forced to hide their fight training, which would eventually help them win their freedom from their slave owners. This style of martial art is not your typical martial art, described as a fight, an acrobatic dance, a game that incorporates selfcreativity, self-expression; and like other martial arts it incorporates strength, flexibility, agility, speed, and discipline. This is Capoeira, and capoeira has

come to Placencia! The group is led by Instructora Arisca, originally from Capoeira Besouro Santa Monica, California, USA (http://capoeirabesouro. com) and Kevin Wilford, and includes toddler (5BZ/ class), kids (5BZ/class) and adult classes (10BZ/class) at the community center on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Classes include learning acrobatics, basic martial art moves, and Portuguese (as that is part of Capoeira history), and ends with song and instruments prior to “playing” (fighting) in the roda. Starting January,

Capoeira Besouro will hold monthly beach “rodas” or gatherings, and this summer will hold a Batizado, in which students will earn

The Fifth Annual End of the World Marathon and Half Marathon is now history!

Girls Running Club. We hope to have more young people next year!

A total of 200 runners traversed the beautiful Placencia Peninsula. Thirty-three runners ran the full 26.2 miles in scorching heat and intense humidity while another 167 brave souls tackled the halfmarathon. In addition to the many Belizean runners, seven other countries were represented: Guatemala, Poland, Japan, Canada, Trinidad-Tobago, and France, and 17 different US States. For the first time the Placencia police had a team of five runners. Next year we are hoping for teams from other services

"Teamwork" by Kathy Anglin

The teens and young adults from Team Seine Bight showed up in force, a total of 25 runners, including 2 young ladies from the Seine Bight

Enormous thanks to the Sponsors, Photographers, and approximately 150 volunteers who managed to execute this event with seemingly endless enthusiasm, energy, flexibility, hard work, creativity, passion, and loyalty to the great cause the Marathon supports. All proceeds (yet to be completely totaled) support the Rotary Club high school scholarship program which enables a growing number of deserving young people to attend high school. See you all next year! And to those of you that missed this terrific event, start training! Note: a complete list of the runners for each category and their times are posted at http://runbelize.org/2016results.html Next years marathon is December 10th 2017.

Never heard of them? Well, pets from their anxiety, and yes, read on and learn why PHS elevates doing the real dirty work--cleaning them to a stellar level. feral cat cages. All of them gifted full days of Gil Rotstein is admittedly “happily their skills and devotion to our retired.” Before moving here, he pets during the November vet followed PHS from afar. Each clinic. What did these folks have time he communicated with PHS, in common? They were all newly he reminded us, “I will be there arrived to our community, and they soon. Be prepared to put me to were impatient to become actively work!” And we did! Here is what involved in PHS. Gil did in his very first two weeks in Maya Bowen is 14 years old. Two months ago, she and her family relocated from the U.S. to Placencia. They coincidentally met PHS Vice Chair, Melanie Wilcher, at Belize International Airport, and discovered they shared a love of animals. Maya is a student at Peninsula International Academy, where she signed up for a five week course. Her chosen subject was “Dogs,” in particular dachshunds. And who better to become her

prizes. Then Gil rescued and fostered a dog! Oh, wait, one more thing. Gil became a PHS member at the Gold Level (BZ $1,000.00). Yes, you read that correctly, he did all these things in his first two weeks in our community! Cathy Allen spent an entire day participating in November’s Seine Bight Outreach Program. This program is not for the faint of heart. It is demanding, both physically and emotionally. Cathy rode in the back of David Kafka’s truck. Cathy helped to collect pets, engaged their owners, and transported animals to the vet clinic. It was a joy watching Cathy comfort the pets with her caring manner. Two of these pets were terminally ill. She took her time, speaking to them, touching them quietly, calmly, connecting with both the pets and their owners. Her patience and gentle heart are her unique gifts to PHS.
