2017 End of the World Marathon Big Success
by Chip Lovett
The 6th Annual End of the World Marathon and Half Marathon was a huge success. Many thanks to our enthusiastic 140+ volunteers and our generous sponsors for making the 6th the biggest and best yet by all accounts. Among the finishers were 50 runners from the four communities on the peninsula, runners from 14 US states and runners from Canada, Costa Rica, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Guatemala, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Poland, and Sweden. The winners of the women’s and men’s full marathon were Rosa Cruz and Juan Bulum and the winners of the women’s and men’s half marathon were Trinity Smyth and Leon O’Brien. For all results see the race website at www.runbelize.org. The runners were delighted to have
relatively cool weather, but they were especially appreciative of all the hard work that went into making the End of the World Marathon a truly memorable experience:

“Thank you very much for an awesome race yesterday! I am running half and full marathons all over the world and there are good ones and bad ones. And there are the ones organized with love and the heart! Your race belongs to the last category! I loved it! Super well done!”
“I love it!!! Great race, great people, excellent organization… I was really happy and I will like to come again!!!!”
“We ran the marathons in Panama
“Another wonderful event! Awesome organization, lovely water stations, great support and of course the location make this an incredibly rewarding event to participate in. And all profits go towards high school scholarships! It does not get much better than that!”
“OMG, everything about the marathon is AMAZING! Bravo!”
Registration is now open for the 7th Annual End of the World Marathon on December 9, 2018.
“Thanks for a great event. Loved the variety of water stations and the awesome volunteers.”
This year we raised a record amount that will all go to high scholarships for Belizean children.

From the Fire Hearth: Fyah Bun! Happy New Year and welcome to 2018! We can’t start the New Year, in fact we can’t start a new day, in Belize without a little bit of chili pepper. Here in our jewel we are obsessed with chilies, particularly the fiery habanero. On every restaurant table you will find some kind of hot sauce concocted with this flaming specimen of chilidom. Marie Sharps is probably the most famous commercially made habanero hot sauce in the land. Stop by for a tour during weekdays if you want to sample all their products which range from hot sauces to jams and jellies. Ms. Marie’s factory, located just north of Dangriga town, is filled with the overwhelming scent of bubbling caldrons of habanero, carrots, onions and other ingredients used in her special blend. Over 20 countries worldwide import the delicious and flaming result. If you aren’t one for too much mouth burning sensation she does make her sauce at the “mild” setting but I always grab the bottle labeled “fiery hot”. Hot Mamas is another commercial
up a great plate of food but also sells her delicious home cooked hot sauces, including a sweet and spicy pineapple habanero blend.
While there are a few Belizeans out there who don’t like chili peppers they are few and far between. Once upon a time we dreamed of heroes who are able to soar high into the sky, shooting laser beams from their eyes to fight off crime. Even now, as we have grown older we continue to create these magical beings in our minds, yet some are unable to fathom the thought of real life super heroes for there is no proof of their existence. Many don’t realize but super heroes really do exist! Have you ever looked into the horizon wondering who polices the waters or if any action even happens there? Just like on land, there are definitely tons of infractions occurring
during hours of the day one would least expect. Rangers are the police of the sea and are specially appointed fisheries officers with huge responsibility of ensuring the protection of Belize’s marine resources. They don’t fly, don’t have super strength and thankfully don’t shoot laser beams but with their stealth, intelligence, bravery and just a dash of charm, you can rest assured knowing that there is a team of dedicated men who work around the clock to ensure the sustainability of Belize’s marine resources. The duties rangers perform compare to no other profession. Rangers of the Southern Environmental Association (SEA) aren’t just officers; they are also biologists, scientists, tour guides, rescue workers, divers and most

importantly citizens of Belize who value and love nature. SEA takes this opportunity to thank its rangers for the dedication, time and effort they have taken to protect our natural resources and wishes that all Belizeans continue to support the work of the Association.

Seine Bight Girls Running Club
by Wanda Stakutis
2017 was a very good year for the Seine Bight Girls Running Club. Most weeks between 20-25 kids show up including 6 or so boys. During the Fall months, we were concentrating on distance to prepare the teens for the End of the World Marathon and Half Marathon and the younger kids for the Fun Run, both held in December. For the next few months the concentration will be on sprints and relays and hopefully some other track events like long jump and hopefully high jump mixed in. We will still continue with distance runs once a month. Coaches Becky Keeling and Jo Carpenter both moved on to other places so we had to say a tearful goodbye to both amazing ladies. They are still cheering our group on from the US and England. We welcomed coach Mary Kay Bader and helper Cheryl Watt to the team. Kirwin and Greg continue as coaches for the club. The outside world has been very generous to the girls in 2017. We have received many pairs of shoes from individuals, through Rodolfo Saenz de Ugarte’s pack with a purpose program and 29 pairs of brand new shoes from the people at Gobundance and Lalo shoes. Mary Kay’s sister gave the club a large number of sports bras in the small sizes that we needed Babe Feldman and Whitney Murphy donated black Capri running pants, enough for every single young lady! Miss Patty
Ramirez sponsored shirts for the teens running in the half marathon sporting our new logo. The logo was designed by coach Mary Kay’s brother Matt and it is awesome! In addition, Bard Davis donated her Yahtzee winnings to the club and with a donation from yogi Jarka Tesnerova we had enough money to purchase metal water bottles for the team with our logo on them. The bottles will be black with the logo in yellow and are expected to arrive early January. Another piece that was missing was food for the runners. In the heat potassium needs to be replenished and the best thing for this and some needed calories are bananas and oranges. Patrick Gonzales, owner of the Flying Pig, held a poker tournament and part of the proceeds from that were donated to the running club. This donation has allowed to purchase bananas and oranges for everyone who comes out to run every week and we have enough for a full year!!

Tridean already has her long-term plans. When she grows up she wants to be an athlete, a chef and a teacher. With all that she is doing now I can only imagine that she will be able to be all three! Seine Bight native, Olympic athlete and the fastest woman in Central America came home from her studies in the US for Christmas this year. Kaina is an inspiration to the youth in Seine Bight. When she shows up on the field the kids flock around her. She uses the opportunity to inspire the kids to do the best they can and push hard and work hard. The primary school students in Seine Bight love to run just like their older brothers and sisters. This year about 50 kids from Seine Bight participated in the End of the World Marathon Fun Run. This race is designed for the children who are too young for the Marathon but want to be part of all the excitement. Between Seine Bight and Placencia there were about 80 students who participated. End of the World Marathon organizer Chip Lovett started the Fun Run several years ago. He is assisted in this by Volunteer and Course Coordinator Dan Edwards. Tracy Eiley takes charge of the Placencia students and Cheryl Watt, Lynn Ann Snellman and Darcy Ucles coordinated the
Seine Bight students. Dan Beeman did the course set up and his team of volunteers kept the kids doing what they needed to do. It is no small effort to, manage this amount of student and a lot of hands were needed to make this happen.

Hook, Line and Sinker by Patricia Celenza
The second annual Hook, Line, and Sinker fundraiser on 25 November and hosted at Barefoot Beach Bar raised BZ $2,900.00 for our pets. Barefoot Bar kicked in another $700.00 for a grand total of BZ $3,600.00! Each fundraiser relies on donations from our businesses and individuals. Without their generous support, PHS would not exist.
