PLACENCIA Breeze A Placencia BTIA Publication

Placencia Lobsterfest It is safe to say that this year’s event was a huge success. This year’s Lobsterfest was organized by the Placencia Village Council, Jenria S. Lozano, the Placencia BTIA, the Placencia Tourism Centre, Placencia Now Visitor Services and a small army of volunteers. The BTB, Belikin, Chabil Mar, Top Value Supermarket and Old Master Fine Rums were just a few of the generous sponsors.

Omars to name a few.

With so many events over the weekend, there was something for everyone…the Lionfish Hunt, Rotary Duck Race, PVC Fishing Tournament, lobster cook off, beer drinking contests and more. So if you don’t want to miss next year’s event, start planning now to visit June 23rd, 24th and 25th, 2017, for Placencia Lobsterfest!

The weather held out with a great breeze off the sea all weekend. The entertainment was top notch including the Pantempters Steel Orchestra, the Super Furia Band, Verge of Umbra, drummers and dancers. The PVC did a great job quenching thirsts at their bar right on the beach. Lobster was the star of the show. The food booths were the big hits and the variety was amazing. It was great to see Miss Deb’s food truck from Cayo, Yoli’s Pizza and the Farmhouse Deli from Belmopan plus local favourites like Dawn’s Grill, Wendy’s Restaurant and

Old Masters Rum Punch Competition The Old Master Rum Punch Competition is always a fun Lobsterfest event. Sponsored by Old Master Fine Rums, Belize Mixology, Tipsy Tuna, Barefoot Beach Bar, Mosquito Coast Ice and Placencia Now Visitor Services, this colourful contest took place on the beach Sunday afternoon.

Faced with a tough decision between the seven entries the judges chose Cat’s punch as the winner, Toni’s placed second, and Dylan’s placed third. Judges included Fiona Macfarlane,

home for Lobsterfest from the Cayman Islands, Ben Carrasco visiting from Gilroy, California, and Luis Velasquez, owner of Belize Mixology, from Belize. Congratulations to the winners! And a big thank you to MC Eldred “Hollywood” Neal, volunteers Denyse Robinson-Sterne and Lynda Trelut, and photographer Maz Carr for her great pictures. Placencia’s own Sierra Brothers created the artwork for the offical poster.

POV - Porkapalooza! Yes, I know we are in the throes of lobster season where all things are lobster 24/7. But there is another Placencia wonderfulness that is of the porcine persuasion! When you need a short break from lobster pizza, lobster grilled cheese, and lobster for breakfast…. think PORK! Chop, chop!

sides like mashed potatoes and grilled veggies. Mariposa steps it up with two tenderloins dishes: Breaded, served with potatoes and homemade gravy and Medallions of pork in Burgundy sauce. Decisions, decisions. Would it be piggy to order both???

Champions! Smokin’, Baby A couple of places offer Pulled Pork Sandwich such as Cleeve’s Kitchen; Rick’s Café also puts pulled pork in quesadillas. Others along the main road regularly

Whole Hog, so to speak

Recently, Tipsy Tuna had an event Every Sunday, Regan, down at called Cuban Night and the star Yoli’s, grills up the most succulent attraction was, as you can see, the whole hog. Oh boy, what a treat, moist, smoked white meat that was pork-a-licious. They promise they will do this again soon…don’t miss it. Oh, and the crispy charred skin? Well, just don’t admit this to your cardiologist…. fabulous.

pork chop you’ll find on the peninsula. He orders these extra thick cuts from a butcher in Belize City, flies them in every week, slathers them with a homemade sauce, grills them perfectly…to a sold out crowd. Another good chop choice is at Rumfish where the BBQed chop is served with jalapeno polenta. Oh, you had me at polenta! Love Me Tenderloin

Tender,

Love

Me

A couple of places offer up renditions of tenderloin that will make you a believer. Fusion Beach concocts a Mediterranean pork tenderloin that is stuffed, finished in a cream sauce and served with vegetables and potatoes. Note to mouth: stop watering. Frequently, other restaurants will do a nightly special featuring tenderloin, like Mojo that whips up a stuffed (homemade) tenderloin with a light pork gravy and served with a papaya/ pineapple chutney, appropriate

do pork ribs ( Radi’s/John B on Wednesdays, Mr. Que). Roast pork is usually the Thursday special at Pickled Parrot. Dawn’s does roast pork so good it will make you cry. Given the choice in the beach bars, order the tamarind pork in At the other end of the hog, so to your tacos, burritos and salads for speak, is another Belizean tradition a piquant change. Occasionally, that finds its way into stews, split when the stars align, you can take peas, and in this case, Boil Up the short trip up the peninsula to Try Mim’s, for sure, and often Em’s where pigs fly. What would a story on the sidewalk cooks up pigtail about pork be without a tip of the hat to The Flying Pig? But, in truth, with beans. Patrick, the Pig’s proprietor, tells us that the name of his establishment refers to “dreams coming true”, not the menu. His dream of opening a bar and grill in a Central American corner of the world has

Don’t be put off by the “tail” idea, think of it as a spare rib on steroids, really meaty and good. Bringing Home the Bacon What’s breakfast without a rasher of Belizean bacon? I suggest supersizing that to a Stuffed Fry Jack or Breakfast Burrito at De Tatch or Wendy’s. You can have it with regular or, another Belizean treat, Butt Bacon. Breakfast of

materialized. Big on sports, events, lots of charitable fun, Patrick will do an occasional smoked rack of pork ribs that melt in your mouth. The Mother Ship This story wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the Mother Ship…. Running W Meat products in Cayo. Here is a picture of me paying homage to the Palace of Pork… I couldn’t leave without a porkchase, I mean purchase, or two. Bacon, of course, and tenderloin to bubble up in the crock pot. Here is my recipe, have to admit, it was a “do again”.

Crock Pot Tenderloin 2 tenderloins mix together • 1T dry or 3T fresh basil and parsley • 2T minced garlic (I used more) • 3T soy sauce • 2/3 C shredded parmesan • 1/2C Cayo honey • 2T olive oil • salt, pepper Pour mixture over the pork, cook on low 6 hours. Strain and thicken sauce if you like. By the way, Rhineland is another quality brand you’ll find locally. All this and I didn’t even get around to sausage or hams!

Page 10 By Tamra Swindoll The fishing may be “Hardcore” but the amenities are anything but! Of the twenty years that I have been coming to Placencia, my fishing trip with Hardcore Fishing Charters has now set the bar. We brought in 47 fish, including Jack, Mackerel, Snapper and Grouper to name a few. That is not counting the many species that we caught and released, including the beautiful Nassau Grouper. Once we were done for the day, the amazing staff cooked up a beautiful Caribbean meal with fish done 3 ways, wild rice, roasted vegetables, caramelized plantains, vegie salad, pineapple mango salsa and a delicious pineapple homemade pie for dessert! Referring to this establishment as a fishing camp is an understatement. Not only do you get the adventure and experienced fishing guides you are looking for, but you have all of the amenities of any of the best resorts I have stayed at in Belize. Rustic elegance is what comes to mind. From the

gorgeous hardwood cabanas (with air conditioning), to the comfortable beds, high thread count sheets, great pillows, softest towels, strong water pressure in the showers, the

setting overlooking the ocean with big porches and ceiling fans, to the outdoor kitchen/bar and gathering area – it is a true Caribbean experience you will not forget.

Mike Huxel and Erwin Westby, you all have created a little gem of a “fishing camp” and I can’t wait to come back!

University of South Florida Researchers Share Results of Study on Water Resources and Tourism Development on the Placencia Peninsula For the last three years (summer months in 2013-2016), graduate students and professors from the University of South Florida Departments of Anthropology and Civil and Environmental Engineering, along with partners in Placencia and the University of Belize, have been studying the impacts of rapid tourism development to coastal areas and local livelihoods. The team is studying how changes in the scale of tourism and other forms of development over the last 15 years have affected daily life and the environment. We are interested in how water and energy, seen as both rights and resources, intersect

with these changes, especially after Hurricane Iris struck in 2001. We have studied the ways locals, tourists, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and other “stakeholders” or groups may have differing views on these topics. During the study, our conversations and survey responses changed to reflect current events on the peninsula. In 2013, the water system management transitioned from Placencia and Seine Bight Water Boards to Belize Water Services Ltd. (BWSL) and a centralized wastewater treatment system (sewer system) was proposed. Concerns over whether

such a system was necessary, what its impacts there might be on the people and environment, and how much it would cost in the short and long term for residents dominated our conversations. In 2014, new developments with the expansion of cruise ship tourism on Harvest Caye by Norwegian Cruise Lines became a key issue for residents and visitors. With this new form of mass tourism development on the horizon, more interviewees expressed less concern about the proposed wastewater system because construction has been delayed and more people thought improved systems for handling wastewater would be needed in the future. In the last year of data collection (2015), rapid changes taking place in land ownership, types and locations of tourism construction, and diverging opinions about the scale of tourism development shaped many of our conversations.

impacts of pollution on coastal and human health. The students draw their view of the water cycle at their school: where the water comes from, where it flows and how that affects human wellbeing and the environment. We also have been involved in a community-based heritage museum project in partnership with the Seine Bight Reservoir to Museum Foundation, other community and national organizations, and residents of Seine Bight. The multiyear project seeks to facilitate the transformation of a historic water reservoir in the village into a local museum of Garifuna culture and history and promote the cultural, educational, and economic aspirations of the village and the wider Garifuna community through heritage conservation, tourism development, and education programs.

We are committed to sharing our results in many forms including reports, videos, and publications. MEMBERSHIP IN THE BELIZE AUDUBON SOCIETY SHOW YOUR SUPPORT! By David Ford

I love Cockscomb. I love the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. And I love the Cockscomb Jaguar Sanctuary! They're all the same place, and let's call it Cockscomb. What do you love about Cockscomb, David? The trails, including Tiger Fern, Ben's Bluff, lots of others, the waterfalls, tubing the river, seeing tapir foot prints pretty frequently, some jaguar prints, knowing that they're seeing me! The macaws, the herons, the trains of ants (watch them; they're amazing), the flowers, the butterflies. The whole place and its inhabitants. And I admire the Belize Audubon Society, which manages Cockscomb and six other national parks, sanctuaries and monuments for the people of Belize and the animals, land and flora therein (park list at end of article). Belize Audubon Society (BAS) manages these treasures for the government of Belize and receives very limited support to do so. Half of the BAS budget comes from attendance fees and the rest from special grants, rentals of facilities, gift shops and MEMBERSHIPS.

Ah, MEMBERSHIPS! MEMBERSHIPS! MEMBERSHIPS!

I've gone to Cockscomb well more than 30 times in the last four and a half years of full-time residence here (Maya Beach). I've been awed by something, or many things, in each visit. The time I saw a few hundred thousand yellow butterflies in an hour and a half as I tubed down the river was just one of those awesome times. And, as much as I'd enjoyed the place, and admired the effective way in which it's run, I had never thought to join as a MEMBER. I had never been asked to join so didn't think of it. But then I had the opportunity to meet with Amanda Burgos Acostia, BAS's young & energetic executive director. And then Amanda invited me to meet as a volunteer with staff (Nicasio Coc, Arvin Coc and Frederito Villanueva) and her at Cockscomb and at St. Herman's Blue Hole National Park to jointly develop a membership campaign. And we agreed that while it might not come naturally for all people to be "in your face" sales people, that when the something as noble

as MEMBERSHIP in the Belize Basin Wildlife sanctuary, Crooked Audubon Society, it might be worth tree Wildlife Sanctuary, Guanacaste a try. National Park and St. Herman's So, a couple of posters making the Blue Hole National Park. How case for MEMBERSHIP will be up many of these have you visited? at Cockscomb and most importantly, More will be on my list soon. staff who greet visitors arriving and checking in, and getting ready to depart, will try to work in a very simple "pitch" that visitors consider membership, while handing out a brochure with the details. Ok, details: kids can join for less than $20 BZ and a regular family membership costs $100/year, or whatever greater amount one might consider, and a family MEMBER gets FREE ADMISSION for 4 people for a year, a very nice benefit from the gift. The simplest way to join is to go to the Belize Audubon Society website and press on the "become a member" button, and off you go. You can also fill out the form and get a receipt and follow-up by email, at park headquarters, instead of paying your admittance fee. So BAS sites are Half Moon Caye National Monument, Blue Hole Natural Monument, Victoria Peak Natural Monument, Cockscomb

Visit www.placenciabreeze.com

By the way, in the first two weeks that staff brought up membership to visitors, six new members joined. Good work, Frederito. THESE MONUMENTS AND PARKS AND SANCTUARIES, AND THEIR INHABITANTS, NEED OUR SUPPORT. LET'S SHOW THAT SUPPORT by becoming MEMBERS OF THE BELIZE AUDUBON SOCIETY.

Let's look at the story our numbers tell of Placencia Humane Society's As impressive as these numbers are, Seine Bight Outreach Program. they tell only one side of the story. BZ $10,106 was raised at a Kelly Behind each number, there is a pet, McGuire PHS benefit concert in the and behind each pet, there is its U.S.in June, 2015. owner, a human. The PHS board voted these funds to finance its first ever and ongoing monthly Seine Bight Outreach Program. In nine months, from November, 2015 to May, 2016, the PHS team of board members and volunteers provided transport and all veterinarian services needed for 93 pets (86 dogs/7 cats).

It is the bond between these two that speaks of PHS' contribution to this community. These are the humane stories that PHS supports and nurtures. Meet Brian Avilez and Chin-Chin, his one-year-old female dog. Brian comes alive when he speaks of Chin-Chin:

"I got her from when she was a lee Fifty-seven pets were spayed/ puppy. I love this dog. When I talk neutered, and dozens of vaccinations to her, she understands me. She and meds were administered, as feels what I feel. When she was hit well as surgeries performed, and

by a car, her leg got broken, and I didn't know what to do. But I heard of PHS and its work in Seine Bight. I contacted them, and they brought Chin-Chin in to the vet clinic. The PHS volunteers wanted me there, too, and of course, I went! The vet set her leg in a cast, and I was right there with her when she came out of her surgery. They told me to pet her, to talk to her, that hearing my voice would help her come out of her surgery faster. And it worked! I talked to her, and her tail wagged! But Chin-Chin needed her cast to be changed every week, so

David Kafka, Melanie Wilcher, and Jennifer Bernard took turns driving me and Chin-Chin to Hopkins Humane Society clinic. Now ChinChin runs around, normal again, healthy and happy." PHS is proud to serve Seine Bight, bolstering the health of its pets and nurturing and supporting that loving bond between owner and pet.
