Placencia Lobsterfest was Summer Fun for Everyone! Lobsterfest kicked off early Friday morning with the 11th annual Battle Cancer 5-mile walk/run. Over 150 people including 100 students participated. at Tipsy Tuna won by Nancy Aguilar (professional and most points) and Carlos Vasquez (amateur). The Best Lobster Dish was won this year by The Vineyard Restaurant. Placencia BTIA Raffle is always exciting especially this year with two round trip tickets from Delta Airlines plus dozens of other great prizes (winning raffle ticket list on page 9). Gilharry 7 closed out the 19th Placencia Lobsterfest with more of their great music. So start making plans for next years June 22nd, 23rd & 24th 2018!
By noon the food booths were set up with all their amazing lobster dishes plus other menu items. Saturday morning was another early start with fisherfolk leaving the docks at 5am for the PVC Placencia Lobsterfest Fishing Tournament. Southern Sounds Drum Corps marched along the main road to the Lobsterfest site providing energy to open the Festival. After the opening ceremonies, the Beer Drinking and Watermelon contests entertained the crowds and the food vendors were very busy serving up lobster sausage, lobster ceviche, lobster pizza, whole lobster tails and much more. The crowds gathered at the Placencia Municipal Pier for the Fishing Tournament Weigh-in (photos and winners on page 19). Gilharry 7 provided great music to dance the night away. Sunday started with Pantempers Steel Orchestra followed by the annual Old Master Rum Punch Contest

From the Fire Hearth: Many Mangoes! by Lyra Spang
The rains are here and so are the mangoes! Mangifera indica is related to our native cashew trees but originated in India where it was domesticated over 4,000 years ago. Mangoes were introduced into the Caribbean in the 1700s and spread quickly across the region. There are as many as 900 different types, each with their own taste, size, shape and unique name. In Placencia village you can find at least 15 varieties: blue mangoes; black mangoes; white mangoes; the slipper shaped thundershaw; the famous Julie mango; the tiny sweet
judge-wig; apple mango, so named because of its round shape; the garlic mango, which has a slight garlicky aftertaste when you bite into it; hairy mango with its long stringy fibres; the ballet shoe shaped slippers mango, the hybrids Number 11 and 13; the Hayden and the so named common mango. Common mango trees can reach a hundred feet high, but thanks to Hurricane Iris none of that size remain on the peninsula. Mangoes and cashews are both members of the Anacardiaceae family and so mangoes contain traces of the caustic anacardic oils found in unprocessed cashew seeds. Those who are allergic to mangoes may develop rashes from eating and handling the fruit or even the leaves of the tree. While this extremely popular fruit can be found growing wild as part of the littoral forest it is most often encountered planted in someone’s yard or flourishing in empty lots and along the roadside.
During mango season, which typically runs from May through September, you can find mangoes for sale at local fruit and vegetable stands and many restaurants on the peninsula showcase fresh mango in fruit salads, desserts and blended drinks. Mango trees are so productive that many often rot under the tree if children don’t get to them first. “Stoning” mangoes down out of the trees is a cherished summertime pastime for generations of Belizeans. Like a number of other fruits in Belize we enjoy mangoes both ripe and green. Full but unripe or partially ripe mangoes are peeled; the flesh sliced off the seed, put in a plastic bag with salt and/or hot pepper and sold on the street as a popular snack. This ubiquitous combination of green mango and salt is a treat found in homes across the country. It also makes a great boca with a cold beer or cocktail. You can also process your green mangoes

into a delicious chutney. Ask around Placencia to find out who has some for sale if you don’t want to make your own. Green mangoes cooked into a sauce with brown sugar and cinnamon taste almost exactly like applesauce. Apart from enjoying the fresh ripe fruit off the tree, local preparations include stewing the entire peeled ripe fruit, seed and all, in brown sugar. With trees producing huge quantities of the fruit, mango wine is another popular way to deal with the overload of ripe mangoes. Or freeze your surplus so you can enjoy a
luxurious mango smoothie when the season ends. Make mango cheesecake, mango crumble, mango juice, mango jam, mango BBQ sauce or mango margaritas. For me, nothing beats simply biting into a perfectly ripe, aromatic mango as the juice runs down your arms to the elbow. However you enjoy it, don’t miss out on mango season in our beautiful jewel Belize! Lyra Spang is owner/guide of Taste Belize Tours, a unique cultural & culinary tour company. Croc Corner
The Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC) is not only focused on science of crocodiles on their habitat. We are also focused on community involvement with our projects and programs, and in particular fostering the next generation of wildlife advocates, environmental stewards, and scientific researchers! Our program Next Gen Croc focuses on encouraging and involving youth in wildlife research, providing them an introduction in translational ecology (= utilizing scientific data to assist in management planning and legal policies to conserve nature while also ensuring positive economic and cultural incentives to the local communities). Next Gen Croc commenced on Caye Caulker in 2015 with students from Ocean Academy. The Next Gen Croc students participate in conducting monthly biodiversity surveys of birds, fish, snails, and crocs of course! The students conduct these surveys to understand how the local ecosystem is adapting to environmental and human development, while also gaining an understanding of their local croc population. Students also participate in outreach, and have proven to be amazing

At the end of the year the students analyze the data and write up a scientific report based on their annual study, providing suggestions for local management and mitigating human-crocodile conflict. This report is sent to Forest Departmentthe CRC is absolutely impressed at the level of efficiency they applied scientific methods from the knowledge they gained over the year given their age.

Next Gen Croc Placencia has four more spots to fill with Standard 6 and higher students (however we will considered younger depending on interest). If your child is interested please have them write a paragraph on their interest in joining us and send it to program.coordinator@ crcbelize.org.
Next Gen Croc is about more than just research as it also teaches the students to become active voices among the community. Outreach is one of the most important parts of conservation, and Next Gen Croc expects students to participate in outreach events throughout the year. What we have seen on Caye Caulker is our students become Wildlife Champions, and when people have a question about the crocs or wildlife, our students have been the ones to provide the answers, illustrating and demonstrating leadership and communication skills. We will be launching Next Gen Croc Placencia very soon (check out the link

C.E.L.A. Visits PHS by Patricia Calenza
WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH PHS IN JULY? 15 July (Saturday) 9 am to 2 pm. Call 604-8676 to schedule spays/neuters/all surgeries. Open clinic for other vet services from noon to 2 pm.
During a two week program called C.E.L.A. (Center for Engaged Learning Abroad-- http://www. celabelize.com/), and under the careful mentoring of Dr. Tesecum, ten pre-vet students from all over the U.S. actively participated in PHS’ 17 June vet clinic. Judy Roberts, PHS board member and Saturday clinic coordinator states: “It was a win-win for all of us! Thanks for this great opportunity, Dr. T!”
great day! The students were very compassionate and enthusiastic about each animal. Dogs and cats were examined thoroughly during their initial physical exam. It was fun documenting it. There was so much going on in every corner. Great vibe. I hope Dr. T will organize that again one day.” To add even more sweetness to the pot, Dr. Tesecum donated back to PHS half of the money he earned that day! Special thanks to Laru Beya Resort who hosted the vet, and to Paradise Resort and Deb and Dave’s Last Resort who hosted the students, and to Turtle Inn, for once again feeding these hungry folks with their world class pizzas. And kudos to PHS volunteers, Kim Edwards, Gil Rotstein, Judy Roberts, and Ina Sonnemoser for keeping it all together.
BZ and U.S. dollars and checks gratefully accepted for payment of the vet bill.
The students spent a full day performing physical exams on our community’s pets and gained hands-on experience, assisting Dr. Tesecum in various vet services.
Stay in touch with PHS every day of the year on our website: www. placenciahumanesociety.org/

A Dog's Life, Part 2 My name is Hoover, my friends here call me Tha Hoova, and I live in Placencia now with my guardian (we all know it's not politically correct to refer to them as "masters" these days). I am a dog blessed with many talents, one of them is reading. I was especially interested in the story in the April Breeze about a fellow canine named Jackson Turtle. Jackson's story was heart-warming, how he lead a somewhat reckless life here in Placencia until his new guardians made the commendable effort of relocating him to Beverly Hills, California. I can relate, but in a paradoxical way. Reading, by the way, has vastly improved my vocabulary.
Anyway, my story begins on the mean streets of Stockton, California. I was way too young to be out on my own and very close to becoming a doggie-linquent. The gang life was tempting me at every dumpster. While I didn't appreciate it at the time, my life was saved and changed when Animal Control picked me up for vagrancy. After a week or so of incarceration and certain doom, I was taken in by some gentle folks at a rescue center in Alameda. Soon after, a guardianin-waiting from some 90 miles away, picked me from the bunch and, after his strict vetting, I was on my way to kinder streets.
a little more grateful. In the beginning, I refused to recognize and answer to my name. I didn't get the simple concept of coming when called. I was a picky eater, I wasn't especially warm and fuzzy. In short, while my guardian was holding up his end of the bargain, I was a teenage brat. Just about the time I caught wind of him looking for another home for me, I had an epiphany: Dog and guardian need to have mutual respect for each other. Maybe I needed to show a little more gratitude.
within barking distance when a mailman, UPS truck, or possible intruder was near. Yep, love and a routine turned me around. After a year or so, I began to notice my guardian would haul out a suitcase and disappear for weeks at a time. I'd be left in the care of doting From then on, life just got better and granddog guardians, got use to better. I started enjoying our walks plenty of treats, and even took a and daily visits to the Barber Shop few road trips, usually to Oregon. where I was treated royally and It was there that I vowed never to savored French fries and such from jump willingly into that freezing, the restaurant next door. I made scary mass of water they called the In retrospect, I should have been myself useful by alerting everyone Pacific Ocean. Nope, not a water dog, that's for sure. Then, something totally foreign (literally and figuratively) happened. December 22, 2016... my Day of Infamy. I found myself in a huge dog crate for only the second time in my life. I spent one very long night and most of the next day making sounds I didn't know I possessed. The next thing I knew, it was hot and my guardian was picking sand fleas off of me. I had arrived in Placencia! Long story short (too late?), I have adjusted splendidly and now find great pleasure in chasing grackles away from my food bowl, stalking (but never catching) iguanas and lizards, alerting the whole neighborhood that the garbage men and Wallen's delivery are approaching. I've made a new friend, Molly, but it's just platonic. I like the attention Dr. Bennett pays to me when he clips my nails and even when he gives me important shots. But the biggest news? I CAN swim! I LOVE to swim! Who knew water could be so warm and so exhilarating? I know I'm a quasiterrier, but there must be some retriever in my DNA because I have become highly proficient in fetching coconuts from the Sea. So, there is a happy ending for both me and Jackson Turtle. Jackson has Rodeo Drive, but I have the Sidewalk. He now has the bracing Pacific, but I have the welcoming Caribbean. We are both loved, we are both in the right place. A big bowl of Gratitude Chow for all concerned. If you see me around, feel free to call me Tha Hoova. All my friends do.
