Placencia is “Going Green” for Lobsterfest 2017! The Placencia Village Council (PVC), in partnership with Fragments of Hope (FoH), the Placencia Tour Guide Association (PTGA) and Ecofriendly Solutions is building on past efforts to “Keep it green and keep it clean”! As in years past, reusable cups will be offered at the main bar, but for this year’s Lobsterfest, Fragments of Hope is donating the cups so there will be no extra charge to the consumer: every beverage will be served in

the reusable cups (pictured below), one per customer. There is a limited amount, so hang on to them when you order the 2nd, 3rd, or any other drinks!

Come out the basketball court anytime during Lobsterfest where Luis Garcia’s team (from Ecofriendly Solutions) will be demonstrating Equally important is this process, and the end recycling finally available products created! on the Peninsula! Despite While we cannot afford what you may have heard to ‘buy’ the glass and in the past about recycling, plastic, we estimate at this is legit! Locally owned least two thirds of all Ecofriendly Solutions can refused is recyclable/can crush all plastics of any be repurposed in this way, size (except the bags) and which would significantly glass to repurpose (“Eco decrease the amount of blocks” and pavers). How refuse in the landfill; located

just off the peninsula, and out of our waters and environment. So we will be using Lobsterfest to spread awareness for this exciting initiative, and looking for the community’s willingness to participate. We also seek input on ways to make this intuitive sustainable long after Lobsterfest, and how we can address the issue of plastic bags once and for all! Look for our educational booth (generously donated by the Placencia Village Council)

for more information.

Even better, look for the labeled plastic barrels “Plastic” “Glass” “Garbage” which will be placed though out the village (10 sets of three barrels) for the entire event. One set each will be given to the three primary schools for the next school year. Fragments of Hope and Luis Garcia are donating these sets for the event, village and schools. The Placencia Tour Guide Association and Placencia Village is donating cash to pay for the extra labor to empty the barrels as they get full, throughout the Lobsterfest event. We didn’t have time to secure grant funds for this occasion, so if you or business would like to get involved, let us know. Remember: all persons, whether natural or legal, who make donations to councils shall be eligible to have those donations taxdeductible under the Income and Business Tax Act (CAP 55; 52-(1) from the Village Council Articles. Contact Ms. Monique Vernon by phone (608-7110) or e-mail: vernonmonique@yahoo. com for more information! See you out there!

From the Fire Hearth: Lobster (and Mangoes)! June is a good time to be in Placencia! It is often beautiful, sunny with beautiful clear sea conditions in the day and cooling rains at night. Even better, mangoes are just beginning to ripen across the peninsula and southern Belize. Look for them hanging above your headthere are at least 15 different varieties growing around the peninsula-or pick one up at your local produce stand in Placencia and Seine Bight Villages. Make sure to head northto Hopkins Village June 3rd and 4th to

celebrate the season attheir Mangofest on the beach, with live Garifuna music and all types of snacks and dishes featuring different kinds of mangoes. Learn a lot more about mangoes in our July edition! And then there is the lobster! As the fishing season opens June 15th, Placencia celebrates with its famous Lobster Festival on June 23, 24 and 25th. Live music, games and competitions, delicious food featuring lobster in every possible combination and a festive beach atmosphere with ice

cold drinks makes this the summer festival to attend. Panulirus argus or the Caribbean Spiny Lobster, known as “crayfish” or “bugs” to local fishers, is the star of activities this month in Placencia and across Belize. Lacking claws like a “true” lobster, P. argus begins its life as a free-swimming larvae. After a year of this nomadic lifestyle, the larvae settle down in mangrove roots or algae and seagrass beds. After several moult periods in this protected environment, they migrate

to the coral reefs, where they will live out their nocturnal lives in holes in the coral rocks. In southern Belize they are often caught by free divers armed with sticks with hooks on the end to pull them out of the coral heads, although traps are also used. Spiny lobster in Belize is often split head to tail, stuffed with butter, garlic, onion and sweet pepper and grilled to perfectionout on the islands. Lobster pasta salad is another favorite if you have any leftover lobster meat in your fridge. One of my favorite ways to eat it is what is commonly called stew lobster. This prosaic name hides the delicious flavor of this Belizean Creole dish, made by chopping up whole lobsters including the savory heads, seasoning them with salt, black pepper, vinegar, red recado paste, and cooking them with coconut oil, onion, garlic and sweet pepper and a little water until a delicious lobster gravy forms. Gobble this ambrosia up with hot freshly made Johnny cakes,

(for those unfamiliar with local food, this is similar to a biscuit, but made with coconut milk), and you have the most delicious evening tea imaginable. This dish is sometimes sold in restaurants under the name Lobster Creole. No matter what restaurant you visit in Placencia during lobster season, chances are good you will find some tasty lobster calling your name. Lobster season is CLOSED February 15June 15 so our lobsters can reproduce, which means more delicious seafood for all of us! If you want to eat lobster, conch and other delicious sea food in Belize into the future, please don’t support the destruction of our mangrove, seagrass and reef habitats and do not catch, purchase or eat lobster or conch out of season. Future generations of Belizeans and visitors to Belize will thank you. Lyra Spang is owner/guide of Taste Belize Tours, a unique cultural & culinary tour company. Croc Corner By Marisa Tellez

The Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC) is NOT just about crocs. We believe that the conservation success of crocodiles is not only dependent on direct conservation efforts of the focal species, but also understanding how crocodiles interact with its environment and other wildlife as thriving and long-lasting conservation management is dependent on preserving the integrity of ecological interactions. One of our projects is a long-term monitoring project (20 years!) around the Placencia Lagoon. We conduct biodiversity surveys monthly around several spots around the lagoon, which primarily consists of bird species

count (birdwatching) and collecting snails to dissect for their parasites. Because of the complex interactions and the fundamental dependence parasites have with their hosts, parasites are considered significant bioindicators of the animal community. Simply, species diversity of parasites directly parallels the wildlife diversity. Environmental or human stressors affecting wildlife should change parasite diversity and here not just for tourism, but presence, which could revel for natural resources that cryptic information about provide economic benefits, environmental disturbances. as well as medicine and The health of the ecosystem food. WOMEN WHO SAIL is a Facebook group begun a few years ago to organize an annual vacation sail to different parts of the world. Last year they sailed to Tahiti! Many of the women had never met before, except on FB. This year, Placencia was their destination. Most of these women are experienced captains, first mates, and crew members, but one woman had never sailed before!

These women don’t just sail—they donate to worthy causes. When they finally docked in Placencia, they delivered a whole treasure of pet supplies and items that will help to sustain PHS’ work in serving pets in our community. Graciously welcoming these sailors and accepting their donations was PHS Chair, David Kafka, Vice Chair, Mary Smith, her husband Stan, and Board Member, Kitty Burgh.

Pop-up Placencia Pooch Parlour! By Dr Annelise Hagan

It’s hot right now and certainly our four-legged furry friends are feeling the heat! This month, Placencia residents got lucky, and after a chance meeting at Barefoot Bar, an impromptu dog grooming day was organised for Saturday 27th May. Lizzy Druvenga, owner of “Zoom Groom”, a mobile dog

grooming company in Oklahoma was here on vacation for a week and had brought with her whatever dog grooming equipment carry-on baggage regulations would allow. When I met Lizzie, she had already visited Placencia Humane Society (PHS) and was surprised to find no one, and no dogs there. She was keen to volunteer her services but

didn’t know how to go about it. I was so excited to hear this, and knew exactly how I could make this happen – through Facebook of course! As comments on my FB advert grew, we knew that a central location was needed to cut out travel time between appointments. PHS very kindly agreed to let us use their building and all funds generated

went straight to the Society. From 8.30am until 5pm Lizzie and her boyfriend and grooming assistant Francisco Canonicco worked tirelessly to shave, clip and trim 12 dogs! David Kafka, PHS chairman, was delighted to receive a donation of $450 from the day’s work. Dog owners will be pleased to hear that Lizzy and Francisco have totally fallen in love with Placencia and are already planning their next trip!

Applications were given to all three Peninsula primary schools, St John's, St. Alphonsus and Peninsula International School. Each school had one or more students granted a Rotary scholarship. Baptism by Ujjayi By Aron Krohn

The important and pivotal events in life are often disguised as commonplace occurrences. Such was the case with my first encounter with yoga. If someone had told me back in 2005 that I would one day be a dedicated practitioner of yoga and a yoga teacher, I would have split my sides laughing. Such raucous laughter would have likely aggravated my lower Aaron Krohn was first introduced to the practice of yoga in the summer of 2005 while visiting Mexico and seeking relief from debilitating chronic lower back pain. He got more than he bargained for that first day, but despite muscle soreness that seemed to permeate his entire body he returned for more and has been practicing Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga since. He has found that the practice of yoga can make a person stronger and more flexible, but perhaps more importantly, opens up the possibility of tapping into

My entire body ached for days after, and in places I did not even know could be sore. This physical heaviness was balanced by an unexpected calm and lightness of spirit.
