Caribbean Influences at Laru Beya Restaurant and Bar Not only is the landscaping gorgeous, the view of the sea is stunning. Open daily 7am-9pm the three level restaurant seats 40 and can accommodate weddings and private functions. Chef Luis and Chef Trinell have raised the bar at Laru Beya’s beachside restaurant. Belizean born chef Luis Najera, worked in various restaurants in Mexico and Trinidad. After returning to Belize he served as chef at Beaches & Dreams in Hopkins before teaming up with 6-year veteran chef Trinell Smith at Laru Beya. Chef Luis describes signature dishes as having “a burst of Caribbean flavour”, such as their Blackened Margarita Shrimp: perfectly prepared shrimp served with a lime sauce, rice and sautéed local vegetables. Another example is the elegantly presented Seafood Skewers consisting of shrimp, conch and fish in a slightly spicy mango sauce. Chef Luis’s first love is pastry, immediately evident in the Chocolate Amaretto Cake and other dessert specials.

Seine Bight Girls Running Club By Wanda Stakutis
Several weeks ago we had the very first meeting of the Seine Bight Girls Running Club! This is for girls between the ages of 11-18 and the meetings are held every Saturday at 6:00AM at the ball field in Seine Bight. Organizers Becky Arzu, Jo Carpenter, Aline Habib, Becky Keeling, Kirwin Ramirez and myself really did not know what to expect. At the very first information meeting over 12 young ladies showed up! The first two Saturdays, we had 12 girls come out for this and they all are planning on coming back. We would have had more the second week but all the Standard VI girls had to be in school. Right now it looks like we have over 20 girls that will be participating and we expect that number to grow.
increasing in intensity to help strengthen core muscles as well as leg and arm muscles. Next Drill Sergeant Kirwin (our only male in the group!) starts the girls running and doing some football drills. The practice lasts about two hours and it is pretty intense but a whole lot of fun. Not only are the adults helping but we are getting in shape along with the young ladies. We will be adding some nutrition and health lessons as time goes on. And
of course the very last thing we do after each practice is to gather in a circle, hands together and give a big shout to "girl power!"
be an ongoing need. We will also be looking for water bottles and beach towels to be used for the yoga so they don't have to be on the bare ground. Jennifer Lovett brought down socks and is working on collecting more footwear through runbelize.org. Seine Bight Olympic athlete Kaina Martinez is giving us lots of encouragement and advise from afar. She was the original inspiration for this program!
Budding artist and runner Sharen from Seine Bight is working on a logo for the t shirts we eventually hope to have. Maureen Blanchfield Kolb brought down the first bunch of gently used running shoes and sports bras. Most of the girls do not Our first goal is to have some of have these items (first practice most the girls ready to run in the Battle of the girls were barefoot). This will Cancer Walk Run in June. We hope to have some of the older girls ready to be able to run the half marathon at the End of the World Marathon in December. Jo and Kirwin are also going to get a football team together with the girls. It has been a pleasure to work with Becky A., Becky K., Jo, Kirwin, Aline, Maureen and Jennifer. I am truly amazed at what can happen when people work together! If you are interested in more information or you want to help in any way, please contact me at gregvwandas@gmail. com or through our Facebook page "Seine Bight Girls Running Club".
The morning starts with some sunrise yoga run by Aline. This is to help with flexibility and discipline and also as a gentle warm up for what is to come. Next Jo starts on some light exercise,

Dawn's Grill By Jolie Pollard
Dawn Berry-Pollard says it happens all the time at her grill. Love at first bite. And it could lead to two different things: They keep coming back for more or they leave Placencia with a pang of regret for not having tried her food sooner. Just like her mother Julia Pate-Berry who opened The Galley -- the first full service restaurant in Placencia -- back in 1982, Dawn is gifted with an intuitive knack for creating flavor. The genuine appreciation from her customers continually inspires her to inject all the love and enthusiasm she can into her beloved Belizean homestyle cooking.
The unassuming 523-4079 or 602-9302 Dawn's Grill is a small six-table restaurant conveniently located along the Main Road in Placencia Village just a short walk from the sports field, gelateria and other popular eateries. One of just a handful of Belizean owned restaurants in the village, Dawn takes pride showcasing her diverse cultural roots spanning from Creole to Indian in her cuisine, but a side of guava jelly. Fractional Ownership Opportunities!!! When developers need professional and successful assistance they contact BMA – the best of the best. Here is how it works. Instead of investing a considerable amount of money in a property that may only be utilized for a few weeks a year a group of people can purchase a very luxurious property together whereby each owner gets to utilize the property for 5 weeks per year and actually earn income while not staying there. For example, One can pay $150,000 for 1/10 ownership of a very luxurious beachfront home, enjoy a million dollar home, stay for 3 weeks a year and earn $1,000/ night income for 2 weeks a year. Luxury ownership at a fraction of the cost, with solid returns and amazing enjoyment not bad! Contact us for information on the various options that we are now exclusively marketing.

St. Alphonsus Gets a Printer! By Wanda Stakutis
St. Alphonsus Primary School in Seine Bight has desperately needed a printer for quite some time. They were trying to function with an ancient printer that did not work all the time and cost a fortune to run. Ellis Sanchez recognized this need and went to Atlanta Bank International where he works and
presented this necessity. Atlantic Bank International purchased a printer for the school! Printers and computers are best in climate controlled environments so the next thing needed was an air conditioning unit for the office at the school. Several donors including Virginia Glessner, Amanda Harris and an anonymous donor contributed to
the cost of the unit which Refritech sold for a deep discount. Doran Yount is donating his services and parts to get this installed and Clive is transporting the unit At long last St. Alphonsus will be able to make the copies they need to run the school. Many thanks to all the people that made this happen!

Rotary Blood Drive and Tracy Eiley By Wanda Stakutis
Many people who live here in Belize don't realize that if you need blood that you can't just get it. In order to receive blood, you need to have either banked it yourself or when you need it you have to get people to give for you. Tracy Eiley recognized that this is a problem in case of emergency so she came to
Rotary and asked if she organized it, would Rotary pay the transport for the people from Belize Blood Bank. Our club agreed to do this for four drives this Rotary year. The idea is that people on the peninsula donate blood that is then banked for anyone on the peninsula that needs it. So far in the first three drives we have collected 39 pints, 8 of them
from the Wallens who have a rare blood type. We have had two cases where people needed blood and were able to receive it right away because of what the peninsula has banked! Our next drive will be the first Saturday in May (May 7). We are hoping to get more people to come out and give so our blood bank account is nice and full! If
Visit www.placencia.com
you live on the peninsula and need blood, please contact Tracy Eiley and she will arrange what needs to be done. Many, many thanks to the people who have donated. You have helped two people already! While there are some restrictions on giving, if you are eligible you can donate every three months. Hope to see you at the clinic!

Oceana Belize Investigates Death of Humpback Whale By Oceana Belize
Globally, it is estimated that there are only 80,000 Humpback Whales left in the wild. And tonight, there is one less of these magnificent creatures swimming in the sea. A Humpback whale first spotted in Belize on February 24th 2016, was confirmed dead on Monday, April 25th by fishermen from Barranco Village in the Toledo District.
Spotted on February 24th near Placencia by Dr. Annelise Hagan
their property. Fishermen from the area asserted to Oceana that given the number of illegal gillnets being used in Belizean waters, it was only a matter of time before the whale became entangled. “Gillnets may look innocuous,” says Oceana’s Janelle Chanona, “But as this incident highlights, even a whale can become entangled in and affected by a gillnet. Repeated incidents involving protected and endangered species as well as charismatics continue to reveal the indiscriminate nature of these nets. In 2016, as Belize works towards sustainability and good governance, we can, and should, stop using gillnets.”
Over the eight-week period, multiple sightings of the Humpback whale, estimated to be approximately 30 feet in length, were recorded in several locations in Belize, including the deep water channel leading to the Big Creek Port, Scipio Caye, the Port Honduras Marine Reserve and Riversdale. Reports out of Puerto Barrios, Guatemala also indicate fishermen encountered the whale in Guatemalan waters on April 6th.
Humpback whales are known to travel great distances during migration season. The whales travel to tropical and subtropical waters to breed and give birth. Weighing in at more than 79,000 pounds, the whales live on a diet of krill and small fish and can grow to more than 50 feet. Humpbacks are popular with whale watchers because they can breach, or propel their bodies out of the water, as well as execute other distinctive behaviours on the surface. The Humpback was once a target for whalers and the population was pushed to the brink of extinction until a moratorium was declared in 1966. They can live for 50 years but Humpbacks continue to be negatively impacted by entanglement in fishing gear, ship collisions and noise pollution.
Local scientists believe the whale was lost or was sick. Efforts are currently underway to attempt a necropsy to determine the exact cause of death. When Oceana personnel travelled to the rough and murky waters offshore Barranco on Friday, April 22nd, the whale was in obvious distress. That it was subsequently observed that the whale’s movement was being hampered by a gillnet wrapped around its tail, was insult to injury. The net(s) in question appeared to be the property of foreign fishermen who apparently returned to the scene during the night to recover

An envelope was delivered to the PHS vet clinic on 18 March. Inside it was U.S. $600.00, signed simply: "Thank you for all that you do! Kindest regards, Dawn Setford and Dr. Derek Zakaib."
Who are Derek and Dawn? Veterinarian Derek opened the Huntington Animal Hospital in St. Catharines Ontario, Canada in 1994.
Dawn speaks: "We loved it. Our It took us a while to catch our clients were our friends, their pets breaths! our family. We sold it over a year Dawn and Derek are no strangers ago. Your efforts are appreciated and we think so highly of all of you!! We just want to pay them back for all the joy they bring us. We owe them that. Love, hugs and thanks to all of you." Nothing more to add to Dawn's beautiful words, except thank you! And thank you, Dawn and Derek, is not nearly enough.
Placencia Humane Society Furball

2009 marked Placencia Humane Society’s very first FURBALL, what now has become our biggest fundraiser of the year. The brainchild of then PHS chair, Pam Thomas, it was hosted at Wendy’s Restaurant, and began what would be a long and deep involvement of local businesses and individuals in supporting our non-profit animal welfare group. Seven years later, the annual tradition has grown into something truly spectacular! On
Saturday, 23 April, a huge crowd of enthusiastic PHS supporters danced, raffled, auctioned, and partied at Barefoot Beach Bar, raising necessary money to sustain the many programs PHS provides for pets on our Peninsula. Community kindness was contagious, as witnessed by this huge list of donors. Without them, there would not be a PHS. It is really that simple. We rely on these neighbors who gave, and also on those who
