This roasting procedure drives out the oils, but one must make sure to always stand upwind of the nuts as the smoke they give off may contain anacardic acid which if inhaled can damage the lungs. In order to avoid that possibility, I suggest that if you want to sample some premium quality Belizean cashews that you ask for them at local grocery stores.
While the seeds may best be left to the experts, the “accessory” or “false” fruit, also called the cashew “apple”, is enjoyed by many not only in Belize but across the region. Called marañónin Spanish speaking countries, the very juicy and fragrant flesh is pressed to extract the juice which is sweetened to taste and served over ice. My absolute favorite preparation of the cashew fruit is to slowly stew it in brown sugar with a few whole allspice seeds until the sugar and cashew juice form a thick syrup and the fruit is soft and dark, its characteristic bold flavours tempered and enhanced by the sweetness. Seine Bight News Seine Bight Girls Running Club
The Seine Bight Girls Running Club turned one year old in April! We have about 15 girls that come out almost every Saturday morning at the very early hour of 6:00AM. There are several others that come when they can and we have one mother who comes with her three daughters and son every Saturday morning! The 15 regulars have all signed up to train for the End of the World Half Marathon on December 10 and we are working hard to that goal. The dream of the club is to have all the girls in matching tops and bottoms so they can be identified as a team when we are out training. Thanks to Jeff Kauffman and his wife Kelly the tops are now a reality! On a recent trip to Placencia Kelly brought down brand new matching Nike tops for all the girls, as well as some new running shoes. The girls were SO excited and are wearing the shirts proudly. We hope at the end of June thanks to another part time Placencia resident to finally have black running pants for all the girls. In an effort to step up training we are now doing Fartlek training as well as running other drills and 5 K’s. Fartlek is a type of interval training that is designed to improve breathing and endurance. The goal is that the girls breathe easy on their runs which will help them to not

The Fish that the Moon and Currents bring to Gladden Spit By Rachel T. Graham, PhD
The full moons of April and May in Belize’s Gladden Spit generally herald the large swirling school of snappers whose spawn lures the largest fish in the sea, the whale shark. Reaching an anecdotally recorded size of over 60 feet and living an estimated 60+ years, this shark has the ability to mesmerize divers with its grace and amaze with its astounding feats of navigation throughout the world’s tropical seas.
Since monitoring of the seasonal aggregations of snappers and whale sharks started at Gladden Spit 19 years ago, we have seen broad changes in the behavior and visitation of these mobile species. Where they used to aggregate readily in large numbers, with snappers spawning close to the surface regardless of the presence of divers, we now see fewer numbers and greater avoidance behavior with sightings more often taking place at depth. Iterative
management measures including protection of whale sharks and the creation of the protected area around their feeding site and the spawning aggregation have been elements mitigating threats to this natural phenomenon. Our tracking of these animals in the early 2000s showed them moving readily to other parts of the Caribbean to feed including Honduras, Nicaragua and Mexico but always returning faithfully to Gladden Spit year after year. But the climate is changing and with it the seas’ physical and biological makeup. Whale sharks are the canaries in our proverbial oceanic coal-mine and serve as indicators of changing ocean productivity, currents and sea temperatures. How long whale sharks will continue to visit Gladden Spit will not only depend on the changing climate and abiding by good wildlife encounter tourism practices that Gladden Spit guides follow but most importantly

on the persistence of large snapper aggregations and their ability to produce large amount of spawn, the combination of eggs and milt released by the snappers for external fertilization and hoovered up by the gentle oceanic
behemoths. By minimizing the threats of overfishing of the spawning aggregation and protecting our fish at Gladden Spit we are more likely to ensure a thriving whale shark aggregation and the privilege of their visits for years to come.

Croc Corner By Dr. Marisa Tellez
As we finish the breeding season of the American and Morelet’s crocodile in Belize and begin the nesting season, crocodiles throughout Belize have become very active, and have been getting a lot of “press” in local media. I am writing this article not just as a scientist, or conservationist; I am writing this article on behalf of various concerned community members in Belize who have reached out to me regarding the false beliefs and misguided information about our crocodiles, and we are asking all media sources and various leaders in the community to help us in building co-existence not just of crocodiles, but all wildlife here in Belize.
international media. Some of this we can credit to unrealistic views of crocodiles and alligators shown on television and in the movies. Social media has also played a negative role in positioning crocodiles as bad, unnecessary, and forever dangerous.
Crocodiles, as any apex predator, play a vital role in the healthy balance of our environment. Are fish populations important to Belize? Confirmed scientific studies conclude that without crocodiles, for example, fish communities decline and become severely damaged. Understanding the crocodile and learning to co-exist with this charismatic and important species should be a proud part of state here today that they are NOT the environmental profile here in man-eaters! They are making a positive impact in Belize, amongst the other wildlife enthusiasts who see the importance of nature for the success of our own livelihood. More positive crocodile news is coming up for Belize. The CRC will be joining scientists, zoos and other croc enthusiastic communities and organizations across the globe for the 1st ever WORLD CROC DAY, and this event will be celebrated with our friends at The Belize Zoo June 17. This fun and educational event is going to succeed in further raising awareness about these unique creatures of Belize, squashing any false myths and educating the public on the scientific facts, particularly the facts of co-existence.
However, here is a warning: if anyone has fed, harassed or handled a crocodile (such as for tours), then that animal WILL become a problematic croc. RESPECT. DON’T HARRASS. Steam baths (badges) are given in cases of swelling, retention of fluids, rheumatism, arthritis, paralysis and muscle spasms. The leaf is heated in oil and applied to boils, tumours, cysts and pus-filled sores. Green stick leaves are boiled alone or in combination with other bathing leaves for any skin condition, exhaustion, wounds, feverish babies, insomnia, flu, aches, pains and general malaise. Seahorse Dive Shop Blessing By Maz Carr
Seahorse Dive Shop is back in their own dive shop again bigger and better than before. Besides an expanded dive shop for equipment, their is a deck area for guests to sit and wait before boarding in a covered larger area. Seahorse Dive shop was the first Belizean owned dive shop in Placencia established in 1994. The dive shop is an icon of Placencia and has been through hurricanes,
earthquakes which knocked it down and been rebuilt with the support of family and friends. August 2016 when Hurricane Earl made landfall in North Belize and affected the South of the country as well as the North as the wind field was huge and knocked down the dive shop. But Seahorse Dive shop owners had a feeling something strange would happen with Hurricane Earl and cleared out their dive shop of 99% of the equipment. PVC offered
them the use of kiosk at the pier to use until they could rebuild the dive shop back, they took the offer and were back running tours within a few weeks of the hurricane. Hard work, a lot of stress but on April 9 saw the completion of the dive shop on its original site and the blessing of the building by Father Moreira.
1994, to the family and friends who helped them rebuild time and time again. After the blessing, George Eiley Sr. sang a short song. followed by various people speaking about what seahorse dive shop meant to them and how it had influenced their lives. Not only was April 9th the day Seahorse Dive Shop celebrated Brian Young Sr reminded those that they were back home, but also attending of the friends who helped Brian And Ardie's 34th Wedding him to build his first dive shop in Anniversary. Seine Bight Zumba!!! Every Wednesday at 4:30 Nicole Harvalik comes to Seine Bight to do a free Zumba class. Between the music and the many bodies in motion the building rocks! Frequently there are over 30 people who show up for the class, one day topping out at 50! There are girls in primary school and high school. Boys come to dance as well. People come from Placencia, Maya Beach, plantation and of course many from Seine
Bight. One day I counted people from 7 different countries and an age range from 3 to 73! A group of teachers from Alphonsus join the crowd most weeks, getting in shape along with their students. The is high, the dancing contagious and Zumba is an incredibly fun way to get in shape. Each person can set their own intensity level and resting when needed is ok. Nicole is an amazing instructor and very good
about leading the different songs.
If you are looking for a way to get back in shape or a way to vary your work out, give Zumba a try. It is an hour of so much fun it doesn't seem like work! The Seine Bight class is held at the multipurpose building their own which adds to the Facebook to see where and on the second floor. entertainment. These young when she will be. Visits Placencia By Rebecca Countant My Journey from Ambergris Caye To Placencia & A Look Around
Belize is a tiny country – but travel, depending on your time and your budget (but mostly your budget), can be time consuming. A few days ago, I took the slow route south – from Ambergris Caye to Placencia. The quaint, colorful, vibrant village famous for their deep long beach and sidewalk main street.
The Sidewalk, Placencia, Belize A mere 100 miles as the crow flies – and two short hops by Tropic Air – but by boat and bus, let’s call it the “local route”, it became an all day affair. Please make sure to read my 8 Tips for Riding the Bus in Belize. It’s actually really quite easy. I LOVE to fly – love it. Beautiful and quick. But I also love the slow route. Here’s how it took me all day to move down the coast to Placencia, Belize. Alarm set for 5:30am to catch the 7:30 water taxi to Belize City. (I have a 35 minute golf cart ride to town.) The water taxi is about 1.5 hours. Taxi from water taxi to Belize bus station 5 minutes, $7bzd. The James Express bus arrives at 10am. Express takes us from Belize City straight west to the capital, Belmopan, over the mountains and south to Dangriga and into the port town of Independence (aka Mango Creek). In total, I was on the bus for 4.5 hours. From there it’s an easy hop $10bzd on the Hokey Pokey Water taxi. Here’s a quick look around as I walked (the long route!) to my hotel on the beach. And her equally famous and colorful neighbor, Barefoot Bar.
The sand here is deep…and a sidewalk is definitely necessary!
