2015 Saltwater Fishing Tournament The 17th annual Placencia Yamaha Marelco Saltwater Fishing Tournament was filled with big fish and an exciting race for Best Boat sponsored by ICB. “Well” captained by Madeleine Lomont, won with 365.9 points followed by “Pelagic” with 345.6 points.

Weather is always an element in any tournament and this year we were lucky. Sunny and calm on Saturday and rainy and calm on Sunday. The rain had tapered off by the time of the weigh-in at the Placencia Municipal Pier. The Placencia Village Council had their bar open

Letter from the Editor Welcome to the October Breeze! As you may have noticed, I became editor in September. Many might not know that I was the first editor back in 1998 for a few years and am enjoying getting my feet wet again… software has changed but not my love of the Placencia

Peninsula. I would be very interested in any input from readers or people who might like to submit an article….please email me at wendebelize@yahoo. com. Meanwhile relax in your hammock or favourite comfy place and enjoy the read!

Our village went through a significant tragedy…are we renewed, are we confident that we can all heal? Are we competitive in the right areas? Are we committed to our village, to our family, to our neighbor, to our Country? This year’s theme had me reflecting on Vance….I saw him as person who was always confident, always competitive and always committed. Let us take him as our example and begin to incorporate this year’s celebrations theme into our lives…Renewed – Confident, Competitive, Committed. If we as villagers use this September theme as our motto….Renewed ourselves as how we look at our village, our country….do we expect only the Council to work at getting things done for the village…are we confident that you can do something for your village. Are you competitive where you can use that trait for the benefit of your village? And finally, are committed to your village – civic pride ….cleanliness of your village, to the elderly, to the children…just a few areas. Reflect on yourself as a villager and see where this theme can fit into what you can do for your village. Village Council elections will be in April 2016….maybe some reflections will have some of you going up for the council…as a council needs persons who are confident and committed to work – physically and mentally for the better good of the village. May the many stories of Vance life and this year’s theme Renewed – Confident – Competitive and Committed be resounded in our minds and urge us to become very civic minded villagers. Rotary Governor’s Visit Each year the District Governor for our club’s District comes for a visit. We are one of nine clubs in Belize and one off sixty nine clubs in our district which includes Honduras and Guatemala. This year is a very special year because our Governor is Placencia native and nephew of Rotarian Lydia Villanueva and owner of LOVE FM Mr. Rene Villanueva. The Governor tours the village to see our various projects, and we have many, and then meets with the club’s Board of Directors to make sure we are all doing what needs to be done. In the evening the Governor makes a presentation over dinner to the entire club membership. This year

Visit http://placenciabreeze.com/

Wendy’s Restaurant hosted the dinner and it was fabulous! Because the Governor is from Belize, the District Conference will be held in Belize. Mr. Rene being from Placencia thought this would make a perfect place for the conference! So from April 13-16 Placencia will be hosting over 300 Rotarians from all over Belize, Guatemala and Honduras!

Rotary Summer Reading Program The Rotary Club of Placencia held its 6th Summer Reading Program the last two weeks of July this year. For the past five years teachers from Edmonton West have come to help out with this program which was created to help students entering Standard I that are behind on their reading skills to get up to par. These teachers pay their own way and give up two weeks of their summer to help out the children on the peninsula. The program originally was just in Seine Bight but four years ago Placencia was added as well. The day starts off with nutritious snacks and then the students have various fun activities that are designed to help them to learn to read. The teachers make it fun because it is summer and we want to make sure they attend every day for the two weeks!

well as part of their community service. Tiana Felix and Estefany Ulloa who graduated (with honors!) last year, decided that they wanted to help out again this year and took care of the food program in Placencia. Damon Martinez, who also graduated, decided that he too wanted to come back and helped out in Seine Bight. Kathy Anglin is also volunteering her time in Placencia. This year we added a smaller program for some older students who are still struggling and it was a success!

There is fun, food and exercises designed to help us all become better leaders. Both students and adults find it a rewarding experience. All told, with the students, scholarship students, teachers and community volunteers, there were over 70 people that worked on this!

For the second year in a row,the two weeks started with a student leadership day for our 22 high school scholarship students . Mr.Darcy , a high school teacher from Canada, designed this program and I In addition to the teachers from Canada, most myself having participated for the last two of the Rotary Scholarship students help out as years, have found that it is really great! Rotary Dictionary Distribution

Every year the Rotary Club of Placencia hands out dictionaries to every Standard III student in Placencia, Seine Bight, independence and Monkey River. In total, this is about 200 students! Each dictionary is personalized with the sudents name and is handed to them. Several Rotarians go to each classroom to do this and also give a quick lesson on how to use the the book! Over the years we have seen many students in Standard VI still using the book Rotary gave to them! This year, Pennsylvania Rotarian Thomas Diffendal and his wife MaryLou, parents of Rotarian Dave Diffendal, sponsored the books.

Book Bag Santa…a Gringo in Placencia As we walked through the bustling terminal at Philip W. seem endless. Those range from inexpensive street dining, where $8 US will easily feed three (such as at Carmen & Maria’s), to gourmet dinners that were often half the price we’d pay at home.

That was just the beginning of my first (excepting Canada) international adventure. Luckily, I chose Belize for that. Placencia was our destination. It’s hard to imagine a friendlier, more hospitable (or fun) place.

Fun things to do Through Splash Dive Center, Gary had organized daily adventure outings such as snorkeling & diving, journeys to Mayan ruins, hikes and visits to banana, coffee or cocoa plantations. But some of stayed back in Placencia to explore the village’s own charms and find our own fun. That can be as simple as a morning stroll on the sidewalk, where Donna and I got a half-hour lesson in everything about coconuts, and the health virtues of fresh coconut water, from one of the locals harvesting them.

Book Bag Santa Mission My wife and I traveled with 45 people in a group called “Bookbag Santa,” which has been running trips trips to Placencia for years. It’s based in Roanoke, Virginia, a city of 100,000, on the western edge of the state in the Blue Ridge mountains. Bookbag Santa’s founder, Gary Hunt, fell in love with Placencia 20 years ago. He realized elementary students there could greatly benefit from all the school supplies U.S. students throw away. So he formed an organization to make that happen.

Or an engaging conversation on the beach with William, “The Plastic Man,” who weaves surprisingly intricate bracelets from tossed-away plastic bags and then sells (and trades) them to tourists. He supports his family this way!

Besides DeTatch, the restaurant at the Seaspray, meals at three places truly stood out. One was the lobster grilled cheese at Barefoot Beach Bar ($10 US), a convenient stroll down the sand from the Seaspray. Another was the shrimp quesadillas at the The Shak ($10 US). We found the best dinners of all at The Secret Garden. Not only is the food delicious, the presentation is world-class. Order the grilled red snapper over gingered rice, topped with spicy Asian coleslaw. That might be the best seafood dinner I’ve ever eaten ($17 US)! Belize 2016 Bookbag Santa will be back in Placencia near the end of next July, for its 21st or so trip. Our finances later this year will dictate whether Donna and I will be along for that.

But if we’re not, there’ll be no shortage of other Roanokers in attendance. The word is quickly passing through this city in the Blue Ridge Mountains, of Placencia’s gorgeous beach, its friendly and engaging people, and all the fun One day we stumbled upon Sailfish Resort, which that’s to be had there. offers both a hostel and luxury accommodations I hope you appreciate what a really special place on the peninsula’s southwest end. It’s centerpiece your village is! is an in-the-water bar (with a palm tree growing in the center). The friendly owners are a couple from California, Mike and Jen. One of us got so loaded there that Mike helpfully drove us back to the Seaspray.

Another day, seven of us rented bicycles at Captain Jak’s Resort and we rode them north to the luxurious Turtle Inn. We lunched there and spent the afternoon lounging at the circular Each year, the group collects discarded (but saltwater pool. unused) notebooks, paper, pens, pencils and Getting around Placencia other bric-a-brac from Roanoke school at the There are basically three ways to get around end of the school year. Getting Your Daily Coffee Fix Placencia is lucky to have two different coffee houses with their own styles and flavours, Above Grounds and Brewed Awakenings.

Above Grounds uses organic, farm roasted beans from Antigua, Guatemala for expresso, lattes and macchiato either hot or iced. Their hot chocolate is from Goss Cholate which is located on the peninsula. They also serve fresh juices and baked goods and are located at the south end of the main road across from Wendy’s Restaurant.

Above Grounds Coffee

Brewed Awakenings specializes in organic, Belizean coffee beans with shells on which are then hand beaten and roasted daily. They also serve smoothies and seaweed shakes – some of their new flavours are Chocolate Razberry Truffle and Toasted Marshmallow Smores. Also featured is Raw Kombucha, a healthy probiotic. Brewed Awakenings are located on the main road just south of Captain Jaks. All restaurants who are open for breakfast serve a good cup of coffee and some like Mariposa and the Maya Beach Hotel Bistro have expresso machines.

Our restaurants have risen to the apps trend and offer some of the most creative and, of course scrumptious, appetizers in this part of the world. Erica Holding in Christopher Coppola’s New Film Nine year old Erica Holding Howarth, a student at PIA, landed a role in Coppola’s new film “Torch”. When visiting friends at The Farm Inn in the Toledo district, she was noticed by the director and film crew who were also staying there. Looking for a young blonde Laura, Erica fit the part perfectly. Two days of filming followed at Lubaantun and the San Antonio Church. Erica had no problem with listening and understanding the director, she found that she enjoyed acting and had some fun. Mom, Ginny Holding, played a bit part in the church scene as the pianist. Her next filming segment was at Ian Anderson’s Cave Branch and was accompanied by her father, John Howarth. Both enjoyed the jungle experience and the fantastic food. “Torch” is a psychological thriller involving an archaeologist who has a Maya Ruin on his property with jade that everyone wants. We hope to see this film at the 2016 Belize International Film Festival.

4th Annual End of the World Marathon and Half Marathon On December 6 the Placencia Peninsula will once Placencia again be hosting Rotary Club a Marathon and Half Marathon. This is the fourth year in a row for this event and every year it grows bigger and bigger! The marathon was the dream of biochemistry professor, marathon runner, and part time Placencia resident, Chip Lovett. He wanted to combine his love for running, getting people out and education and came up with the idea of a Marathon. Our beautiful peninsula is a perfect place to run a marathon! Chip wanted any money raised to go towards education and By Wanda Stakutis

worked with the Rotary Club of Placencia to use the money for high school scholars. ( with this money and other donations and money raised in the community there are now 22 students on 4 year high school scholarships and 4 students that have received grants for 6th Form)

years this part of the Marathon has taken on a life of its own and there is a competition for the best water station, and we even have official judges escorted to each station in a “judge mobile”. The Maya Beach Bistros has taken home the title the last two years.

Not only does the Marathon raise money but it brings the community together and it is FUN!! In true Placencia fashion, people manning the water stations the very first year had to do something different than just the average marathon so in addition to handing out much needed water the water stations had music, entertainment, characters and high energy. Over the next two

To register to run visit www.runbelize.org The registration deadline is October 15, 2015. If you are interested in volunteering to help out contact Dan Edwards. As you can imagine, to take care of the 200 plus runners we hope to have this year takes a lot of volunteers. Last year over 120 people helped and this year we need at least that!

Runner Profile

Kathleen Rolinson is 47 and just got into running about six years ago, not into speed but slow and steady. She has been running half marathons regularly but last March jumped it up to a full last March running the Rock & Roll Marathon in Washington, D.C. Kathleen has been visiting Placencia for a few years and heard about the End of the Worlds Marathon on Facebook and friends. She is looking forward to a few Belikins when she finishes and will have about a dozen family and friends from all parts of the U.S.A. cheering her on at the finish line. We wish her and all runners good luck!

Blue Water Classic By Andrew Roe, BGFA President

The Belize Game Fish Association has been promoting the sport of offshore fishing in Belize since 1987. During this time it has hosted numerous competitions that have seen anglers enjoy some of their best fishing experiences, all of which has helped to build the camaraderie of the Association’s members and forge lifelong friendships. Over the past 2 years, the BGFA has set a new goal to bolster its sustainability impact on the sportsfishing industry of Belize and has started by introducing a release system into its tournaments for billfish.

billfish is allotted a set number of points for a catch and release, and the points are weighted in such a way that should a large “trophy fish” be caught, the boat will not be penalized for bringing it to the scale. Since this is a new concept to many anglers, the BGFA has left the option for a boat to bring a billfish to the scale if they are unsure of how to release a fish, although fewer points are allocated to fish that are killed. Since the introduction of this new rule, the BGFA’s anglers have released 7of the 8 sailfish caught during its last two tournaments, as well as the only Blue Marlin. In addition, the initiative has spread to casual weekend fishing with a further 10 Sailfish and 1 Blue Marlin having been release by our members.

These release rules were introduced in November 2014 at the BGFA’s 6th Annual Blue Water Classic hosted out of the Radisson Fort George in Belize City, and to great success. The concept is simple. Each boat is given a release flag at the beginning of the tournament and when a billfish is brought alongside the boat, anglers take a video of the fish showing the flag in the frame, This of course was an initiative that needed much the leaderman touching the leader and the fish support as changing the way things have been subsequently being released. Each species of done for many years is never an easy task. Much

of the push came from the BGFA Membership which was the backbone of the support. Special mention must also be made of Oceana who sponsored the release points last November and who are a big supporter of the BGFA’s catch and release efforts. Looking near term at three to four years down the road, the BGFA intends to move all of its tournament to full catch and release, perhaps with the exception only of record fish. The Belize Game Fish Association will be hosting its 7th Blue Water Classic out of the Radisson Fort George from November 19th to the 21st. Last year Placencia boat Pelagic, operated by Hardcore Fishing Charters, made the journey up to the city to compete, and the BGFA would like to extend an invitation to all boats and fishing enthusiast of Placencia to join us at Belize’s largest fishing competition. See you there!

From the love of Nature to Art Earnest Garcia captained the boat “Hammer” a passion for Placencia born and raised Garcia. in the Saltwater Fishing Tournament along with Besides fishing, art is another of his passions. As anglers Garrel Flowers and Steve Wark, held on a child, he was always sketching and drawing September 19 & 20th. Fishing has always been

and one day, a good friend, Jake Roberts (owner of the original Space Monkey) threw him a bag of acrylic paints and said to try these out. Earnest said “since then, I have never put down the brush because of the new love and appreciation it brought to me which still amazes me every day, and that is watching the environment I love come to life through every stroke of colour”. With the help of Jake Roberts. Friends and family, Earnest was able to study in Toronto, Canada at the Ontario College of Arts and Design for a year in 2005/6. As a tour guide, he gets his inspiration from nature but worries about many creatures that are fast disappearing. “Every image I paint, I try as best as I can to capture them in their amazing settings and brilliant colours to try and make more people realize to find that passion in themselves and to do their part in protecting nature in Belize, my home.”

A Note from Jake Roberts I first met Ernest as a neighbor living behind the Purple Space Monkey. After viewing his sketch book it was clear Ernest would benefit from an art education. The Ontario College of Art and Design (OACD) in Toronto, Canada is an international university of the highest repute. The interview/audition process is one of the most difficult trails a student will encounter. After an initial review of his sketch book, he won an interview and he set off for Toronto. He brought some of his best works to fill out his portfolio. Except for the process, he would have been accepted on the spot so revealing was his interview but we had to wait a few weeks for the official announcement. He was accepted. After a few fund raising events he set off for his first year. He labored well throughout his first year and was invited to second year. Unfortunately the government of Belize nor the people of Placencia recognized the importance of Ernest’s adventure. Due to a lack of finances, he was forced to withdraw. Being exposed to life in a large cosmopolitan city full of art galleries, theatres, not to mention a subway and snow, Ernest made the most of his stay in Toronto. Ernest returned to his home a better man. He continues his love of painting, his guiding and football. Personally it is truly rewarding to see his art grow every year and I wish him well. My Amazing Trip to South Africa First of all, I must say, I’ve never met a warmer set Marathon of people than Runner the South African people! I’m so very humbled that I had the opportunity to visit such a beautiful country and experience a tiny portion of Africa! By Tiffanie Westby

we watched our meal being prepared, everyone shared stories and laughs, and at that moment it was easy to see that everyone felt the magic of Africa!

At 5 am sharp the next morning, me along with a Belgian couple, went on a 4 hr bush walk with our guides Rex and Sharon. We went in search of a perfect spot to watch the sunrise, which was I left my little village of Placencia in early May breathtakingly beautiful as it came up! Luckily, and embarked on yet another journey that would Rex didn’t have to use his firearm on our walk. take me to the African Continent for the very We saw many animals but didn’t encounter any first time. I flew to Belize City then to Atlanta danger. and from Atlanta directly to Johannesburg, My 4 days at Tremisana ended way too soon. South Africa, which was a 16 hr flight. Having Whenever I wasn’t on a game drive, I sought out flown previously from London to Kuala Lumpur the employees and guides who were free to chat. (13 hrs direct), I knew I’d be ok on this flight. Most of them were from the surrounding villages Honestly the long flights aren’t so bad. and cities and I just loved hearing their stories. It was a Monday evening as our airplane My guide on my last game drive was Bongani. descended into the city of Johannesburg, I had Before we set out that day, I told him I wanted to a window seat and stared upon ht beautiful city see a Leopard and we ended up seeing 2. I guess everyone onboard them very close to the truck and an Elephant not breathed a sigh of relief after being in the air for very far away which fitted in perfectly with my 16 hrs because we all clapped as the wheels of photo of the Leopard. our airplane touched the African soil. I cried when it was time to leave my new friends As I headed into the City, I beamed at everything at Tremisana and Viva Safaris. They took along the way. It was the beginning of their great care of me for my 4 days there. Delina winter and a bit chilly but I loved it. the manageress and chef, was so sweet as well. The next morning, I was scheduled to go on a Lovely, lovely people. tour to Soweto and the Apartheid Museum. A Viva Safaris delivered me safely to the airport in wonderful guide from Springbok Alas picked Johannesburg where I had a flight to Cape Town me up and I was very lucky to be the only that night. I was sad and excited at the same person on this tour. We made our way through time. Johannesburg and headed to Soweto. I saw so much as we drove and walked around, there were times when a tear or two escaped me. We stopped in at the Hector Peterson Museum, Winnie Mandela’s House, Desmond Tutu’s Residence, and the house where Nelson Mandela lived before he went to prison. We then made our way to the Apartheid Museum, where I got to see a lot of what went on in South Africa during Apartheid. At the end of my tour, I went out and strolled through Johannesburg to get a good feel I arrived in Cape Town just before midnight of the city. and took a cab to my downtown hotel. We were assigned our rooms immediately and After settling into my nice little apartment, I then jumped in our truck for our first taste of the managed to get a few hours sleep before waking African wildlife. Within minutes of our drive, up to my very first day in Cape Town, which was there were countless animals roaming freely race day. I had a 12K race to run and had no time around and as I turned around and looked the to waste, and as I scurried around, I laughed to sunset, I realized I was in a completely magical myself and thought how completely crazy I was, place and felt completely free and peaceful but and happy. I was so cold as I exited my hotel and most of all lucky to be there. After driving around went into the streets to find a bus that would take in the bushes for a while, we drove up to the area me to Milnerton, the starting point of the race. was even asked by a runner while on the bus to Milnerton, if I was a celebrity. I laughed and said I wish. He asked because I had a gold colored race number and gold colored bracelet, which came with a cost but well worth it. I finished my race at 1,361 out of 10,000 runners and I was ecstatic. I enjoyed a free massage and the party on downtown Bree Street from the comforts of the VIP Area. I then went to the private award ceremony for the top 10 runners and got a photo with 1st place winner, Emmanuel Bett of Kenya. I met most of the South African National Running Team and many elite runners. It’s a day I’ll never forget. Cape Town was so wonderful. I toured the Cape Peninsula, I went up to Table Mountain. I went over to Robben Island and stood and stared for a while at the prison cell where Mandela spent 18 of his 27 yrs imprisonment. I strolled along the V&A Waterfront and admired the beauty of it. I wandered on the famous Long Street and listened to live drumming in Mama Africa as I ate ostrich, crocodile, wart hog, kudu, springbok, and of course drank a few beers. I took a 2 hr road trip from Cape Town to Gansbaai to do a cage dive with Great White sharks. I toured the City of Cape Town and visited District Six. I strolled inside the Castle of Good Hope and wandered around in Kirstenbosch Garden. I met so many amazing people along the way. It was such a worth- while journey. I learned so much on this trip. When you visit countries like these, it changes you in many ways. In the past, I’ve visited a tiny portion of South East Asia, Ireland, Canada, United States , Bahamas, and a few other countries in my region. I’ve met countless nice and friendly people but never, ever in a foreign land, have I felt such warmness as I did in South Africa. I hope my memory of Africa will be with me always. Travel used to be something that mostly only the wealthy could do but times are different now. There are ways and means for everyone to travel if they really want to. Start small, and if you don’t have a passport, get one now. Be open, be friendly and talk to people. Read, research, open your minds. I can promise you, there’s a big world out there with lots and lots of interesting things to see and do. And never, ever let anyone discourage you or make you feel guilty for wanting to see the world. You have your life in your hands, live your life for you!
