Reggae for Real
Legendary Jamaican reggae artist Bushman made a guest appearance recently at Fusion Beach where he performed to an enthusiastic crowd of about 100 local fans. The 43 year old singer is considered a key part of reggae resurgence in Jamaica in the late 90's and is known for his rich, sincere baritone. Raised in Rastafarian culture from an early age, Bushman's talent was recognized as a young boy and got his performance chops in school choir. He hasn't stopped singing since. His Wikipedia page states he remains humble despite his recognition and follows a strict ital diet. He lives in St. Thomas with his wife and children, enjoys a quiet life and the pleasure of bathing in the hot springs in his native town.
58 intrepid golfers braved the heat and fierce competition on September 14 at the Laru Beya Putt Putt course in the name of fun and charity. Close to $300 was raised for a local project. The 14 holes, newly refurbished thanks to Laru Beya staff, were all sponsored by sports-minded mixologists who added to the spirit of the day with various, uh, refreshments. It is possible that a few of the entrants were there under the Witness Protection
Faisal Tejani, new proprietor of Fusion Beach was thrilled to be able to bring this free concert to Placencia and hopes to have more performers find their way here in the months to come.
Special Award for best golf outfit went to Hilario who channeled his best bumblebee. Winner of the "got her money's worth" (highest score) was taken by Vivian. Best Lounge Singer award to Dave. A special thanks and award went to Laru Beya staff for the outstanding job of providing the group with food and Belikins.

PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT FOR CREATURES, INCLUDING HUMANS BY KEEPING THE BEACHES CLEAN By David Ford
cencia Peninsula. The hope is that a cadre of caring local volunteers will get in the habit of spending a couple of hours each month cleaning up our wonderful environment on the peninsula, to help the creatures whom we share this wonderful environment with to stay well and prosper!
Three collaborating public-purpose organizations, based on the Placencia Peninsula, have made the beach a little more safe and useable for marine and land-based creatures. On September 24, eighty good people spent several engaging hours removing debris and junk and anything-but treasures from the beach in Seine Bight. In future months, these folks, and others, will turn their attention to other areas on the peninsula with a monthly Saturday clean-up for which volunteers will be MOST WELCOME!
The volunteers showed up by 3 p.m. and began its work near the school in Seine Bight and proceeded to the beach. Work was concluded at 5 p.m. and refreshments were served. The group was congratulated on a job well done and on a much cleaner beach. Some of the volunteers then celebrated by taking a well-deserved swim, with the dolphins, turtles and other friendly sea creatures.
The Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC)is a Belize-based non-profit that seeks to conserve crocodiles, their habitat, and adjacent wildlife throughout Central America through research, education, and, most importantly, community involvement. We work with the local government and other organizations to monitor the crocodile populations throughout the country, to better inform policy decisions regarding the animals. CRC had a full Breeze article in April, 2016. Projects Abroad is one of the largest volunteer abroad organizations in the world, and it has an office in Placencia. It’s a for-profit organization with a definite public purpose. 10,000 people go abroad to 35 countries each year on a variety of service/internship projects. In Belize, there is a country office in San Pedro and an office in Placencia. The mission in Placencia is for volunteers to help preserve and protect the Belize Barrier Reef by participating in conservation activities such as data collection and analysis, beach clean-ups and salvage dives after training for their Open Water Diving certification. Between 3 and 10 volunteers are present at one time, and the fees paid by volunteers pay for Project Abroad’s good works.
The following are a few pointers on how to be eco-friendlier in your own life, so there is less junk to be either cleaned up or left to injure the environment and its inhabitants: 1) Bring your own bag to the market 2) Bring your own Tupperware and cups in case you get take-out 3) Instead of using paper towels or napkins at home, use old rags or towels as "napkins" instead; all the stores have piles of cotton wash rags that are very inexpensive, washable and work much better than paper towels. Donations of trash bags and refreshments for the monthly clean-ups are also welcomed.
Upcoming clean-ups you can volunteer for: Saturday, October 29, 2016, from 3-5pm at Ms .Vern’s Restaurant

It’s central to the mission of all three organizations to clean-up beaches. Patricia is admittedly a late comer to pet ownership. In August, 1998, an emaciated mangy dog showed up underneath her house, and this little one took pulling ticks off as a loving massage. Patricia owes it all to Giselle. Six months later, Prancer showed up, and like a boulder careening downhill, it just never stopped.

Turtle Biology
Sea turtles are gentle ocean dwelling reptiles. Slow-growing & late maturing (may take between 12-40 years to reach adulthood depending on the species). Range in weight from 40 kg to 1,000 kg. They are primarily omnivores but the green sea turtle is an herbivore.
Reproduction
Tips
Adult females may nest for two decades or more. A gravid female may lay 2-6 clutches of 80-200 eggs per year. The eggs are incubated in the sand for 50-65 days, during which the temperature plays a crucial role in determining gender of the hatchlings. Mature females return to nesting grounds in 2-5 intervals.
Dim/turn off the lights nearby beaches and nesting sites. Don’t drive on sea turtle nesting beaches. Fill any holes you dig while visiting the beach. Remove all beach chairs, umbrellas, boats or any other furniture from the beach before leaving at night.
Southern Environmental Association
Remove any trash from the beach when you leave.
