FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD TOURING & PROFESSIONAL THEATRE THURSDAY 4 MAY

7:30PM

FULL £12 / CONCESSIONS £10

Far from the Madding Crowd is perhaps one of the most endearing and English of Hardy’s novels. It tells the story of the young farmer Gabriel Oak and his love for and pursuit of the elusive and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene. Her wayward nature however, leads her into the path of the dashing Sergeant Troy and the introverted and reclusive gentleman farmer, Mr Boldwood, whose love for her fills him with a fearful sense of exposure culminating almost inevitably in both tragedy and true love. “...a thoroughly loveable adaptation which is laugh-out-loud funny and yet still purveys the darkness of the classic tale with respectful authenticity.” BBC Radio Shropshire

METAMORPHOSIS TOURING & PROFESSIONAL THEATRE FRIDAY 5 MAY

7:30PM

FULL £10 / CONCESSIONS £8.50

12+

Waking one morning to find himself transformed into a dung beetle Gregor must now seriously consider his options. One of the most resonantly strange stories ever brought to stage, this highly acclaimed adaptation by Steven Berkoff plunges into the extremity of Kafka’s dark humour and reveals a tremulous human heart. Metamorphosis casts its beady eyes over the norms of society, illustrating the alienation of one painfully normal individual with deft surrealism. Theatrical Niche tours this wonderful monstrosity, using signature touches of Physical Theatre and grotesque ensemble Puppetry.

Blown fuses, real and metaphorical, punctuate the action with flashes of pent up energy in this acclaimed play. The diminutive heroine frequently plunges the dilapidated house she shares with her alcoholic mother into darkness by playing her dead father’s records at a volume matched only by the soulful power of her vocal impressions. Little Voice has a hidden talent: she can emulate every chanteuse from Judy Garland to Edith Piaf. She hides in her room, crooning and dreaming of love, while her dishevelled mother mistakes a seedy agent’s interest as affection rather than enthusiasm for the gold mine buried in her daughter’s throat. This is an engaging fairy tale of despair, love and finally hope as LV finds a voice of her own. Tel: 01234 354321 Facebook: ThePlaceBedford Twitter: @ThePlaceBedford 05

“Because I am a ridiculous man, they call me mad now.” Plan B is a dark comedy, a satirical response to this new world. The intention behind this piece is to explore ‘who we are’ and ‘where we are’ in civilization. It takes references from Dostoyevsky’s Existentialism. This is a new piece devised by two second year students of the BA (Hons) Theatre and Professional Practice at the University of Bedfordshire. MOZART & SALIERI’ / A NIGHT IN VIENNA TOURING & PROFESSIONAL THEATRE FRIDAY 2 JUNE

7:30PM

FULL £12 / CONCESSIONS £10

12+

Villainy and genius can never be compatible? This opera follows the apocryphal legend that Antonio Salieri poisoned his rival and fellow composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart out of jealousy over his talent. Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) used the short story Mozart and Salieri by Alexander Pushkin as libretto. This also inspired Peter Shaffer’s famous stage play and film Amadeus. In a new English translation and staged by an award-winning team, this original and innovative production will captivate its audience, making us witnesses, if not conspirators, to Salieri’s plan to poison Mozart. After the performance of Mozart & Salieri, you are invited to A Night in Vienna with famous arias and duets from Mozart’s best-known operas Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute and others.

Recalling heroic sporting achievements alongside epoch-defining political events, Tayo Aluko follows the multi-award-winning Call Mr. Robeson with another “brilliantly put together history lesson delivered as art.”

ALL AGES

Jonathan Byrd grew up singing in the Southern Baptist church, where his father preached and his mother played piano. After four years in the Navy, he returned to home to play in rock bands. It was at an old-time fiddle festival in the mountains of southwest Virginia where his writing began to change. Assimilating the sounds of southern traditional music, Byrd wrote new songs in an ancient style. After the positive reaction to his last year’s tour Jonathan is back with his Pickup Cowboy Johnny Waken. After very successful support dates with Laura Cantrell, Cale Tyson and Suzanne Vega, My Girl The River is excited to share more of their debut album with and audience that loves a great song, a great voice and being drawn in by a memorable show. Bella Heesom’s debut play is part true story, part farcical performance lecture. It tells a deeply personal story of loss and love, through a darkly comic 17-step guide to bereavement. Mixing tender intimacy and unflinching honesty with hardhitting philosophy, clownish silliness and an enchanting live piano score, it takes the audience on a powerful emotional journey, shot through with jet black comedy. Performed by Bella Heesom and Eva Alexander, and directed by Donnacadh O’Briain (director of Olivier-nominated production of Rotterdam by Jon Brittain, & Always Orange by Fraser Grace at the RSC) the show comes to The Place as part of a national tour following a critically acclaimed run at Underbelly at the Edinburgh Fringe 2016 and a Highly Commended transfer to VAULT Festival 2017.

DOUBLE BILL: EVERY WILD BEAST AND NIGHT CREATURE

eMail: info@theplacebedford.org.uk Web: theplacebedford.org.uk

Every wild beast has a heart, in each heart is light and dark. The stars are empty, the moon has fallen from the sky and the mountains are full of monsters. Barri collects newspaper clippings and listens to vinyl in her grandmother’s attic. Sam is trying to outrun a community support officer investigating the murder of several domestic badgers. Weaved from folklore and fable Every Wild Beast tells a tale about courage, curiosity and running away from really big scary things. There is a cliff face cutting into the waves and breaking them to foam. An old kayak is tied to the roof of a battered black Jeep. Sid watches her reflection on the surface of the water, with each ripple it changes. Sometimes she finds a beautiful creature looking back. Sometimes she finds a spitting snarling girl, tense with rage and sick with anger. Night Creature is the retelling of an Ancient Greek myth about a pretty nymph turned monster; a fable about losing yourself to the dark blue sea. Folklore and legend collide with the 21st century as the myth of Scylla is told through poetry, storytelling and an original folk score to bring a new world to life in the imagination of the listener.

The Man stands in a pool of light. He is an actor. We know this because he tells us so, but also because our experience tells us that this is what actors do. He appears to be intelligent, but this might just be clever direction. The Event is a deceptively simple piece of theatre where the audience is playfully led to question, not only the nature of reality, but the very nature of existence itself. Bob Paisley renews his long association with The Place in this Edinburgh Festival Preview. “This is pure theatre, and how refreshing it is.” Robert Trussell, KC Star
