The TuffRider Neon Collection includes a full range of products including breeches, riding tights, mock-zip short and long sleeve shirts, track jackets, saddle pads, polo wraps and more. Browse all of the TuffRider Neon Collection online at www.breeches.com, and look for more new and exciting equestrian style innovations from TuffRider and Equine Couture this fall! (Hint: think preppy!)

‘Behind The Seams’ of TuffRider the Neon Collection Laurie and Timmy Sharma were apparel shopping when they noticed that neon-colored garments were popping up throughout stores. Tops, jeans and accessories, all in vibrant, eye-catching colors were flying off of shelves everywhere – everywhere that is except tack shops. The owners of the brands TuffRider and Equine Couture recognized an opportunity to bring the popular neon trend from the mainstream to the equestrian market, and the TuffRider Neon Collection was born. Now pony riders, juniors and adults a like can look bright and fashionable in and out of the ring. “What makes TuffRider and Equine Couture different than the majority of equestrian brands is our ability to create our own fabrics. We’re not reliant on buying pre-existing fabrics,” explained Timmy, who founded the TuffRider brand in the early 90s. “Because of that, we’re able to quickly recognize trends like this one and turn them into something that is both fashionable and practical for riding.”

Lily Rupinski & Glenhaven Pick Me Capture the $2,500 Queenie Productions Pony Derby Classic Lake St. Louis, MO- June 25, 2015- Ponies from all over the Midwest gathered to The National Equestrian Center for the 2nd Annual $2,500 Queenie Productions Pony Derby Classic presented by Kathryn Lily Equestrian with additional prizes from Pony Pizza Company, Rachel Kruse Equine Art, The Plaid Horse, & Mid-Rivers Equine Center. In the spacious Main Hunter Ring at the National Equestrian Center, ponies navigated spectacularly decorated Derby Jumps set at 2’3’’ for small ponies, 2’6’’ for medium ponies, and 3’ for large ponies. As this was a Pony Derby Classic, the two round standalone classic portion counted for pony hunter division points in each pony’s respective height section.

Lily Rupinsky & Glenhaven Pick Me won the $2,500 Queenie Productions Pony Derby Presented by Kathryn Lily Equestrian at The National Equestrian Center in Lake St. Louis, MO.

The morning started out with a Derby Breakfast and coursewalk with the prizes and awards displayed next to the ring. In the first round, the small ponies started off first. It was the medium ponies who dominated, however, with the top three spots- Glenhaven Pick Me, Elite Movida, and Exquisite all in the 2’6’’ 12.2-13.2 h category. The consistent top scores in the mid-80s all came out of the Medium Pony Hunters. Leading round one, Lily Rupinski had to go back in last with the 10-year-old gelding Glenhaven Pick Me (Old Acres St. George x Downland Jollity). Their three year long partnership paid off and Rupinski kept cool for the win. Samantha Meyer came

34 • THE PLAID HORSE back winning the 2014 Pony Derby Classic with Pip Pip Hooray to finish 2nd Overall with Elite Movida (see inset). Hannah Rupinski’s trainer Katana O’Brien said, “This is such a great venue to do something different. It is hard to hold up the whole horse show, but John McQueen stopped everything to have the ponies go in the main ring, which is so special for the kids. It was awesome that the horse show made the pony kids feel so special.” Rupinsky, 12, said, “It was really fun. It was exciting to ride in the big ring. I wasn’t nervous- I just had fun with Raz. This Derby has been

a goal this year and all of the other ponies are really nice, so it means a lot to win.” Rupinski, of St. Louis, Missouri, has trained with O’Brien for four years. Her favorite subject in school is Art and she is really enjoying spending her summer with Raz and looks forward to competing at her 3rd USEF Pony Finals this year.

Samantha Meyer and Elite Movida finished 2nd in the Queenie Productions Pony Derby The Meyers & Coulters celebrate Samantha Meyer's 2nd place finish in the $2,500 Queenie Productions Pony Derby Presented by Kathryn Lily Equestrian at The National Equestrian Center (Lake St. Louis, MO).

BY EMMA DUBINSKY In 2014, 11 year old Samantha Meyer of St. Louis, MO, won the inaugural $2,500 Queenie Productions Pony Derby Classic with the small pony Pip Pip Hooray. Then in August, Sammi and “Pippi” finished 23rd Overall at USEF Pony Finals out of 103 Small Pony Hunters. However, in December 2014, disaster struck. Sammi fell off a pony who tripped and subsequently fell on top of her, landing her in the hospital and unable to ride. But she was determined –and after two months of recovery, she was back in the saddle by February 2015 – ready to pick up where she’d left off. Unfortunately, just a week back into the show ring, Sammi fell off again, breaking her collar bone... Kylin Coulter Meyer, Sammi’s mother and trainer said, “I felt like the worst Mother and trainer ever! I thought for sure I

had ruined my daughter’s riding career. I was absolutely heartbroken.” After taking time to physically and mentally recover from the accident, Sammi climbed back in the saddle in May on several ponies and even showed a horse for the first time. After only a month back in, at the Queenie Productions Summer Fun I & II Horse Shows, Meyer showed a horse Ji erbug to place 2nd in the CWD 2'6'' Hunter Derby Classic as well as her 2nd place finish in the Pony Derby with Elite Modiva. She also scored the Equus Award for Best Performance by a Junior on a Pony. Sammi said “she was also afraid of a horse tripping and landing on me again. But as I started to heal and feel be er, I knew that I wanted to ride again and I wasn’t going to let fear get in my way and keep me from riding!” Sammi is planning to show again this year at USEF Pony Finals – she is back! And be er than ever!

I’ve got some great products to share with you this month! A couple of really great accessories that are both on-trend and very practical at the same time. To mix things up a bit I decided to start with a look that will take you straight from the barn and out onto the street – looking great and ready for whatever the day has for you. I’ve also got the riding shirt you NEED to beat this heat! As well as a great color combination to rock in your next big jumper class or medal final. ◀ OUTFIT 1 – WHAT I’M WEARING: Skull Cashmere linen sweater, Equine Couture Natasha breeches, Katharine Page Devon sandals, Oughton Limited handbag. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone straight from the barn to dinner, or hopped off a horse and headed straight to watch the Grand Prix at a horse show. Wearing a darker color breech makes it easy

I love these white breeches with just a hint of sparkle on each of the pockets, and they’re made of a good heavier material that makes for a more flattering fit – which I really appreciate when it comes to those white pants! This Scarpati bag looks great in a patent black, but it’s made of a durable material so it can withstand being thrown around a bit at the shows. I carry all of my necessary equipment like extra spurs, alternate bits, etc. Lastly, can I just say that I LOVE a dark navy jacket with white breeches? Beige, tan, or buff just doesn’t give navy the justice it deserves like the contrast on white does.

A Simple Catch Ride... Maybe Not BY JESSICA CHOPER & ARMAND LEONE As long as there are ponies there will be a need for pony catch riders. Tiny children matched with green or mischievous ponies present notable challenges, especially on a horse show day. A catch ride with a more experienced pony rider is a useful training tool and remedy in the right situation to resolve a pony’s spoiled bucking, rearing, spooking, or refusing to jump. Young and often inexperienced riders can get scared when ponies act up and make things worse. Other times, trainers may just need a catch ride in the pony under saddle because a child has two ponies. Regardless of the reason for the pony catch ride, individuals involved in the decision making process should know of potential problems and liability concerns that can arise out of a “simple” pony catch ride.

Suppose a pony catch rider is selected to ride a pony because its current rider cannot get the pony to jump around the course. The pony catch rider enters the ring, the pony spins and throws the child into a jump causing serious injury. The child and her family want to sue, contending that the child should have never been put on the pony. The pony owner says falling off is part of the sport, and they knew the pony would stop. Whether or not a legal remedy exists will depend upon the Equine Liability Statute of the particular state and the unique factual circumstances of the fall. Most states have Equine Liability Statutes that immunize participants in horse sports from civil liability to encourage riding. State equine liability statutes aim to protect equine activities because riding and showing horses is hazardous and unpredictable. By shifting the risk to participants, states can better achieve their goals. Unless limited exceptions apply, participants cannot sue for injury. Horse show entry forms also contain language mimicking part of their state’s equine statute, disclaiming liability for injuries resulting from inherent risks of equine/ animal activities. However if someone gets hurt, the injured person can always sue and then questions about disclosure of the pony’s habits to the rider and the rider’s experience to the pony owner arise. Answers to these questions are found by looking at how much the rider was informed of the pony’s bad habits before getting on, how honest the rider was about prior riding experience, the

safety of the riding or show environment and assumption of risk recognition. Did the trainer or owner know the pony’s propensity to spin, stop, and pelt children into the jumps and tell the rider; did the pony previously injure other riders; and what medication was the pony on? These questions would immediately arise. Similarly, did the trainer/owner reasonably try to ascertain the pony catch rider’s ability and experience to safely navigate the pony over a course of jumps? If a rider can prove that the trainer/owner knew the pony’s propensity to exhibit the dangerous behavior, and knowingly matched it with a novice rider, an exception to the general rule of immunity may exist. Proving a connection between the negligence and the injury is also crucial for someone to succeed on a claim for injuries. The court has found that even if the person failed to make a proper determination of a rider’s ability, liability could only result if failing to do so was connected to the damage. Suppose that no one adequately assessed the pony catch rider’s ability but instead of being injured because the pony stopped and spun at a jump, the pony tripped and fell going around a turn. Even if there was inadequate inquiry into the rider’s abilities, a lawsuit should fail because the fall was caused by an inherent risk of riding any horse and not anything to do with jumping issues of that horse or rider. Suppose a pony catch rider is not injured in the actual class but causes injury when the pony kicks another horse or person in the schooling area. Those other participants may be held to have assumed the risk and consented to injury causing events in the schooling ring which are reasonably foreseeable. However any rider riding in the show ring, schooling area, or even showing a pony in hand, has certain responsibilities to control the horse. The assumption of the risk analysis is multi-faceted. If the matter ends up in court, the analysis will involve the totality of the circumstances, including the liability statute, the obviousness of the risks, the participant's age, skill and experience, the safety of the riding environment, familiarity with the pony, the rider’s conduct and the nature of the defendant's conduct. In one state, a child showing her horse in hand could not stop until directly behind another horse, which kicked

and fractured her leg. The court found that by participating in the show, the child assumed the risk of being injured by a horse. That the child had lessons on handling, showing and riding horses for 1 ½ years before the accident and was taught not to walk behind a horse were factors in the court’s finding that immunity existed. In another, a horse reared and kicked a competitor while waiting at a congested ring entrance to show. The court found that the participant's injuries arose out of the inherent risk associated with equine activities, not willful and wanton misconduct. A pony with a catch ride could collide with another in the schooling ring prior to the start of competition. The pony catch rider might claim that the collision occurred because the show failed to adequately control the schooling area and allowed too many ponies to jump at once. The show would likely assert that the rider had waived the right to sue by signing the entry form. Although entry forms indicate that the competitor agrees to assume the risk of harm, the form must be signed by an adult for a minor competitor. However in one state, a child sued a horseback riding school for injuries sustained from a fall and won, even though the parents signed a waiver. The

court held that the parental waiver was ineffective against the child. In many jurisdictions, it is a well-established rule that without statutory or judicial authorization, a parent cannot waive, compromise, or release a minor child's cause of action. Yet on the other hand, some states hold that minors as young as 14 are competent to know the risks and consent to them. Horse show days are busy and despite the best of plans, unanticipated problems can always erupt. Protect the interests of the child catch rider and the owner by having an open and frank discussion of the pony’s limitations and the rider’s riding skills before making the match. Whether or not a lawsuit is filed, preventing injury to a pony catch rider is the most important issue. The best way to prevent both is to ask questions up front and disclose all information to one another before accepting an offer to catch ride a pony at a show.

Bruce’s Field: The New Aiken Horse Park Takes Shape BY MORGAN BULLOCK, PHOTOS BY TARA BOSTWICK The late Bruce Duchossois’ vision of a state-of-the-art horse show park in Aiken, South Carolina is on track to come to fruition this summer. Duchossois, a tremendous supporter of various disciplines of horse sport, purchased a 66-acre field in 2000 to save it from developers. Duchoissois’ contributions to the horse community included as owner, including Olympic horses for the United States; committee member, including VicePresident of the United States Equestrian Team Foundation; and as competitor in the Amateur Owner divisions as well as combined driving. Deep in the heart of Aiken, the property has been home to steeplechases for many years, and the multi-purpose facility will soon be home top quality horse shows as well. While the property was purchased in 2000, plans began in earnest in 2013 as Duchossois continued a long battle with cancer. He began to form a plan to make his dream of a premier horse show of his own standard in Aiken a reality. The Aiken Horse

Park Foundation has been diligently creating the show that will be at Bruce's Field, and hope that it will be a place many from all over will enjoy. The Phase 1 plans for the horse show will be eight 28-stall barns, nestled around the already existing steeplechase track. Within the track there will be five rings installed with GGT footing, as well as a grass hunter derby field and grass grand prix field. Two of the large rings will be dedicated to schooling, and also are of the correct dimensions to offer Dressage competitions as well. The true draw that the Aiken Horse Park Foundation is making hospitality and exhibitor-orientated atmosphere a top priority. There will be hospitality every afternoon provided to the riders and owners, as well as early morning coffee and breakfast items offered. Bruce hoped that this horse show would be a place riders, trainers, owners, and grooms would love to show, and also provide an educational and charitable place to the community of Aiken.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? The Capital Challenge Horse Show (CCHS), in its 22nd year this September, is a staple competition for many of the country’s elite riders, serving as a significant right of passage within the equestrian community. Most competitors take to the ring on ponies and continue through to the professional ranks, showcasing the best of equestrian sport in the United States. Some of the sport’s top riders hold fond memories of their pony days in The Show Place Arena at Prince George’s Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro, MD, and took some time to reflect on their experiences from over the years at CCHS.

Samantha Schaefer:

Samantha Schaefer, now 22, is known as the hometown hero at Capital Challenge Horse Show, hailing from nearby Westminster, MD. Schaefer dominated the Pony circuit at Capital Challenge from 2001-2004, collecting numerous champion awards, most notably aboard Halcyon Hawthorne, who was the mount for her first Grand Pony Hunter Champion Award. Schaefer made a name for herself at CCHS, repeating as Best Pony Rider several times over. Schaefer now riding for Baylor University in Waco, TX, was quick to reminisce on her days in the pony rings. “I always had so many ponies at Capital Challenge and back then you could take three in a division. It was the first big show where I had a real win. I was Grand Pony Champion and Best Pony Rider on Hawthorne and it was the beginning of it all,” she said. “Everyone has that one horse or pony that gives them that confidence on the big stage and Capital Challenge was where I found that. I didn’t only learn how to win there, but I learned how to lose and that has stayed with me ever since.”

Tori Colvin:

It should be no surprise that Tori Colvin, now 17 and a household name on the show circuit, mastered the tracks at Capital Challenge Horse Show, learning to pilot her many mounts to numerous wins at the beginning of her still young but storied career. Colvin worked her way through the ranks at CCHS, garnering several top finishes in the pony divisions, winning her way through the Juniors, and has her sights set on the WCHR Pro Finals in the near future. “I scored my first 95 on All The Best in the Pony Classic during the WCHR Week and

theplaidhorse.com • July/August 2015 • 69

I was eight or nine. It’s still a highlight and something that I will always remember. That was such a big moment and really got the momentum rolling for me,” remarked Colvin. “Watching the professionals put in consistent and flawless rounds helped me to realize that ultimately that’s what I wanted to do and where I wanted to be.”

close to the nation’s capital. Darst collected top honors during her years in the pony divisions at CCHS, which prepared her for the competition she would face when she moved forward with her transition to the Juniors. “I was always so excited to compete in the big pony classes and I think I got too excited for them sometimes to be honest,” she said. “I was really competitive in the regular classes but the big classes were a great lesson for me because they taught me how to keep a level head and learn how to deal with extra pressure. I wouldn’t always ride my best towards the end of a round and those competitive classes taught me that you have to focus till the last minute when you know you’ve done your job to the best of your ability.”

Maggie Jayne:

Meredith Darst:

Meredith Darst made headlines in 2013 with a dominant win in the Hermes Washington International Horse Show Equitation Classic, cementing her name amongst a talented list of young riders moving through the equestrian ranks. Before her winning ways in Washington, D.C., she set a high standard at another show

The Jayne family name rings synonymously with consistency and professionalism, something all three of the Jayne children are admired for. Maggie is now a top talent in the hunter ring and explained how even at the pony levels, she started learning the ropes of the business thanks to the many catch rides she competed at CCHS. “When you look back at your pony days, you remember an environment that was fun and almost pressure free, but I think having access to the all of those amazing catch rides and feeling responsible for someone else’s horse shaped me at a very young age. I learned what that responsibility felt like and was able to take that forward with me into our business,” she said. “I feel very lucky that people were so trusting in letting me compete their ponies. It was truly a privilege to compete at Capital Challenge in those divisions early in my riding career and to have access to an incredible string of ponies that helped teach me how to ride. It’s a show that by nature, helps to shape your career.”

From The Wild to Pony Finals Mr. Popper is truly one of his kind, as he is the first full bred mustang to qualify for Pony Finals. He was captured in October of 2009, in Fremont, Wyoming. He was placed in a pen like structure with others for several years till he was adopted by Joe Williams in 2013. Later that year Mr. Popper was bought by the Gentry family as their daughter’s, Madison Gentry, 15th birthday present. Mr. Popper, Goose or Goosey Goose nicknames given to him by Madison, was a diamond in the rough. This family knew he would one day be special, Goose just needed some training, love, and a lot of treats for him to become the pony he is today. Madison has great affection for her pony, “When I first tried Goose I instantly knew something was special about him, no matter what he would give 100% in anything I asked him as long as there was a treat at the end of the day.” Goose is a character in and out of the ring, “His demeanor is so innocent, like he can do no wrong, [and] he try’s his heart out every ride.” When they first started showing together they attended local shows for him to get accustomed to the horse showing atmosphere without getting overwhelmed. When Madison and Goose felt prepared enough they tackled the Rated shows. On his first time out he qualified, securing his spot on the trailer that’s going to Kentucky in August. “To qualify the first time out was an incredible relief and reassurance for both of us.” He qualified in the Green Large Pony hunter division with the help of Terry Gonzalez. Mr. Gonzalez is owner and trainer of T.M. Hills Farm International. He runs a successful show barn based out of Ocala, Florida. Focusing on hunters, jumpers, and equitation. The Gentry family came to T.M. Hills Farm in the fall of 2014. They wanted a trainer who

can be honest and get the best out of the horse and rider. Mr. Gonzalez can do just that, he got Madison and Goose to trust each other fully. He brought any fears that they may have had out in the open for them to conquer one by one. Working with Mr. Gonzalez has brought them several steps closer on becoming a solid team. “They have learned to really believe in each other, day to day I see them growing. I’m excited for them, once they get their groove on in the show ring you see they truly belong in the pony world. He’s a greater mover, truly giving some of those ponies a run for their money in the undersaddle.” Mr. Gonzalez explains how Madison and Goose work together and get better each day. Madison had been to Pony Finals previously but was unable to show her large pony on the final day. Her week started off well, she stayed out of ribbons but it did not bother her. She went for the experience, and she was surely doing just that. When the final day of showing came, her dreams were halted. Madison’s pony showed complications of colic, which meant no showing for them today. Sadly her Pony Finals experience ended shorter than she had expected. All she wanted was another shot, to see the Kentucky show grounds once again. Now Goose is her opportunity to experience Pony Finals all over again. Pony Finals gathers ponies from across the country every year. Brining top notch, well-bred ponies who are usually at the top of the leaderboard year after year. In 2014 Pony Finals, True Colors surprised many people by winning the over fences, and placing in top 10 in two other Medium Green Pony Hunter classes. He was a paint pony that made many people turn heads in the show ring, a pony you wouldn’t naturally see winning everything everywhere. Many people base a pony’s abilities on its color and breed. Having different ponies go to Pony Finals brings a more evolved show. As we progress into developing the divisions where all ponies are treated equally, we allow different breeds to shine. Not just narrowing down the field to blood lines and fancy names. But, being able to evolve the classes to see the overall pony, how he/she moves and jumps. Having an equal opportunity for fair judging no matter breed or color. Story and photos by Plaid Horse intern Dominique Gonzalez

Pony Jumpers – Changing for the Better or the Worse? BY PLAID HORSE INTERN JORDAN COBB Pony Jumpers has always been a classic crowd pleaser. Who wouldn’t be entertained by ponies jumping Junior Hunter jumps and higher? Many people watch this division at shows, but many also don’t know about the concern linked to the division and all it entails. Pony Jumpers is set at fence heights of 1.05m 1.15m that generally has increased difficulty over three or more classes. While it seems remarkable that these kids can pilot ponies over such big jumps, and in many ways it is, many trainers fear that it teaches young riders bad habits. From watching from more than just an entertainment point of view, you wouldn’t have to look far so see what they mean; instead of balanced inside turns, many riders save time by just going faster, and instead of impulsive jumps from spots that

help their pony clear the fence, some riders simply replace this with a growl mid-air. Many trainers feel like in general the division teaches them to run for time and not give a technical ride that is needed for higher levels of jumpers in the future. Its not an out of the blue claim either; a good number of them aren’t successful in the pony jumpers. That being said, there are many impressive and successful pony jumper teams. At Pony Finals 2014 in the Individual Phase, over 20 rider and pony combinations were asked to exit the ring due to too many refusals, being off course, or falling off, and for those who made it around, many had large numbers of faults. You can get a similar, although maybe not as dramatic result at other national competitions or even watching at home. It is enough of a concern that the USEF Rule Book even suggests that, “to avoid over-emphasis on speed jump-offs, it is recommended that management write sections with initial class(es) scored under Table IV (Optimum Time) or as “clear round” events (all entrants without jumping or time faults remain

theplaidhorse.com • July/August 2015 • 75

equal).” After Pony Finals this year, many trainers seemed to be left with the impression that something needed to change, may it be training kids differently, less emphasis on time, higher jumps that demand a more technical ride, they weren’t sure yet. On one hand, kids could be trained to ride a more technical ride, but it is hard because so many of the ponies are talented enough to let them get away with some mistakes, and it can completely alter a kid’s ride. Trainers also consider putting less of an emphasis on time, but as long as there are still kids set on riding for the clock, this approach could prevent kids from winning unless their execution is flawless. On the issue of raising jumps, while it could demand better rides, you cross into the question of what is too much for ponies; 1.15m is already a big jump, especially for ponies who usually don’t even stand 14.2h to jump consistently and last for years. There are many other possible solutions, so it is the job of today’s trainers to pick and choose. Which they will choose is a question still pending, but with a division so suffering from low entries as compared to the Pony Hunter division, each qualified trainer who walks away is potentially hazardous to the sport. The real question now is: what is the future for Pony Jumpers? Will it change for the better? or the worse? The US National Pony Jumper Championships are coming up, and as it a horse show that attracts the nation’s top pony jumpers, it should be a good indicator of this change.

Inside Double G Stables: From Wall Street to Pony Finals

֛ BY PIPER KLEMM When Olivia Golden talks about ponies, her eyes shine. She smiles constantly and describes every personality trait, even in ponies she hasn’t owned in years. She remembers that perfect trot at Pony Finals, that simply spectacular over the top round at Indoors, she remembers sitting on them for the first time as a young pony – she loves every single minute of it. She sold or leased over 50 ponies in 2014, many of them with records that make even the eyes widen of even the most seasoned pros – Pony Finals Champions, Indoors winners, the hands down best short stirrup ponies on the planet. So, when Golden cannot stop talking about one particular pony, you sit up and listen. She knows quality. She knows kid-friendly. She knows the great programs it takes for ponies to be at the top of their game. So when she can’t stop almost grinning from ear-to-ear and saying Milo-this, Milo-that, Milo, Milo, Milo, the excitement is electric. Milo is Summerwood’s Rhythm N’ Blues, a Medium Green Pony Hunter who will make his USEF Pony Finals debut this year. When I met Milo the following day, I too was energized with the contagious enthusiasm of a young pony with a really exciting future. This sweet boy is stunningly beautiful, has a rhythmic canter, never seems to touch the ground at the trot, and has an incredibly round but smooth jump. There isn’t anything not to like. After starting Double G Stables out of her Eastern Pennsylvania barn in 2003, Golden decided to breed some of her own ponies and carefully selected some Hillcrest mares of the Gayfields Vida Blue lineage from Marilyn Checki and matched them diligently with top pony hunter stallions from

around the country. The problem was that despite her love of young ponies and starting ponies, she found that breeding and pony babies were not where her passion lay. She sold Hillcrest’s Blue Angel in foal to Lendinjadon Hoo Me to Amy Redman for her a 2008 addition into her Summerwood breeding program. In 2009, Golden was looking for a young prospect and saw a video of the young gelding she had bred and was impressed by his quality and attitude – he has everything she was looking for in a pony prospect. Golden bought the yearling Summerwood’s Rhythm N’ Blues aka Milo from Redman and set about raising and training him at Double G Stables. After taking her time starting him, training him, and bringing him up through local show series, Milo began showing in the Green Pony Hunters in 2014 as a 7 year-old gelding with Nikki Boyle. Milo and Nikki spent the winter winning in the Green Pony Hunters in Zone II and have achieved top success as the year has progressed, including Reserve Champion at the I Love New York Horse Show at Lake Placid. They plan to compete at USEF Pony Finals in August together. Golden grew up riding under the tutelage of Jerre Frankhouser in Pennsylvania. She started riding at age 6 and always enjoyed the nearby

Devon Horse Show, where she would spend hours watching the pony breeding and pony hunters. She started in the small pony hunters on Short Stop and enjoyed much success in the pony hunters, which was then followed by success in the junior hunters on her Thoroughbred. Golden attended Lehigh University (PA) for college and moved to New York with a Finance degree in hand. While she still had her Thoroughbred and showed in the amateur owner hunters, she spent much of her time concentrating on Internet Security as Vice President, Equity Research at Bear Stearns and then as Managing Partner at Stratesight LLC. Real-world business acumen in hand to go with a lifetime of equestrian education, Golden and her husband moved back to Pennsylvania, where she started Double G Stables in 2003. Golden found her niche to be focus on the training, sales, and marketing of top hunter pony competitors on the A circuit. As opposed to having many clients, Golden focused on the ponies, which has allowed her time to develop and produce superior ponies – whether to train inexperienced ponies or rehabilitate difficult ponies. This schedule of focusing on sales and leases and training allows Golden to spend time with her family, including her six-year-old daughter Vivian. Vivian takes after her mother – she loves ponies. She trail rides all over the Double G Farm and often begs to ride for hours at a time. She is a diligent study and is currently showing in the Short Stirrup classes. She’s like any pony crazy kid, just a little better mounted. Her current pony of choice is Calendar Girl or Juanita, a former small pony star that is in her early 20’s and loves trail riding and wandering all over home and horse shows with Vivian. Ever patient at the ring, Juanita is content to hang out and learn courses and watch or show that she’s still got it in short stirrup classes. In the barn, Vivian is always grooming or bathing (or braiding or finger painting or clipping) Juanita, then off to ride her without tack (just over her blankets in the winter). Vivian showed Something Blue to a Championship at the Winter Equestrian Festival this year when she got to visit and train with Joey Currais. She’s competitive and loves her ponies – it is pretty obvious where both of those qualities come from. In the pony divisions today, ponies need so much – so much quality, so much training, so much forgiveness and kindness, and so much drive to win. It is easy to see why the ponies from Double G Stables win so much.
