our volunteer VAULES
The Pleasance is a place where journeys begin. Our festival volunteer programme stands proudly at the heart of our organisation, giving people of all backgrounds and ambitions the opportunity to enhance their skills, grow confidence and become part of a community that puts people above all else.
It exists on five simple values:
It’s the journey that counts, not the destination Every volunteer’s experience should be memorable and they should take something from it that stays with them wherever they go next.
Go far, stumble often
Volunteers should have the opportunity to push themselves. People flourish just outside of their comfort zone and it’s here that confidence grows.
Many voices make for better conversations
The mix of people and the meeting of minds and ideas makes everybody’s time at the Pleasance infinitely more rewarding.
Time to explore
The fun that volunteers have outside the venue is as valuable as the experiences they gain within it.
We get there together
The Pleasance exists because of volunteers. Their contribution is significant, respected and celebrated. By supporting volunteers to realise their individual ambitions, we are able to achieve our own.

TENNESSEE, ROSE
A gripping new play starring Anne Kidd (Shetland). Delve into the childhood of siblings Tennessee and Rose Williams and the rooted guilt of one of America's greatest playwrights. Rose provided the inspiration for many of Williams' greatest characters, suffering betrayal at the hands of her family and society as a whole. The play starts when Rose, in her 80s, is in a medical facility. Tennessee has died, leaving provision for flowers to be sent to her every week, from beyond the grave but he is still very alive in her mind and on stage.
An inquisitive nurse wants to connect with Rose and tries, against medical advice to help her find peace, something she may later come to regret. What might Rose say, were she given a voice? To her brother, to her mother, to her nurse, to the world? Avoiding documentary, the play examines mental health, guilt, and the role of family tragedy in artistic creation...

SOUND CLASH: DEATH IN THE ARENA
Levi Roots presents the world's first theatrical show to bring dancehall culture and clash competition onto a mainstream stage. It’s a play with music, but not as we know it... this time it’s Reggae, Ska and Afrobeats that set the tone.
Sound Clash - Death In The Arena retells an iconic love story set in a dystopian future; where music is everything, and two warring sound systems - The Eagles vs The Thunders, fight for power.
When young lovers Ashley and Kazzandra are torn apart by family politics and musical warfare, what follows are electric dance offs and lyrical battles in the Sound Clash Arena, as death, destruction, and treachery is spread
by opposing leaders using music and sound clashes, as a weapon for control of the people. Get ready to dance, as the competition begins... This show is played at max volume!
Sound Clash is directed by West End veteran Ray Shell, written by award winning novelist Alex Wheatle MBE, choreography by Jade Hackett (Hex, Sylvia, Get Up, Stand Up) and produced by Adrian Grant (Thriller Live).
Jamaican sound system culture plays one of the most important roles in the evolution of Reggae, Ska, Dancehall, Hip Hop, Grime, Jungle, Drum & Bass, Reggaeton and many more forms of music we enjoy today. I wanted to shine a light on this unsung phenomena by putting it on stage for the first time and bring it to a new audience in the theatres

ADAM KAY: UNDOCTORED - THIS IS GOING TO HURT...MORE
The nation's twelfth-favourite doctor returns for his first month at the Fringe since 2016. This is Going to Hurt was the publishing phenomenon of the century, selling over three million books, winning multiple BAFTAs and with a live tour attended by over 250,000 people. But it was only part of the story. With his stethoscope now hung up, Adam shares more suture-splitting anecdotes from both on and off the wards. From the first days of medical school to life after the NHS, Undoctored is a hilarious and astonishing portrait of an extraordinary life, from one of
Britain’s finest - and funniest -storytellers.
It’s about hospital admissions and personal ones.
It's about being a doctor and being a patient. It's about an hour long.
The show also contains some favourite moments from This is Going to Hurt, because people ask for refunds if they don't get the 'degloving' story.

Help us #GetToZero new HIV transmissions in Scotland by 2030!
Who could’ve imagined - we are nearing the point where HIV diagnoses in Scotland could become a thing of the past!
Though HIV is now a treatable and manageable condition, a positive HIV diagnosis still has the power to knock people off their feet. For many, HIV stigma impacts every part of their lives. People still carry the burden of decades of discrimination and misinformation.
Not only can you help us fund HIV testing, support and life-changing services to end new transmissions, but together we can end HIV stigma.
Your support will help us make history!
If you see any of our fantastic volunteers out and about during the Fringe in their purple t-shirts, please donate what you can to support our work.
Play your part to change the lives of those at risk of HIV.
