History
It is said that the Spaniards discovered Puerto Galera in the early 16th century as a safe haven for their trade ships during heavy squalls and typhoons, thus the name which means “port of galleons” in Spanish. The sheltered bay of Puerto Galera remains an anchorage for boats during bad weather to this day. Puerto Galera, one of the oldest settlements of the religious missionaries, was founded in 1574 as capital of Mindoro. Originally, the town was located at the Lagundian, now a sitio. Because of its susceptibility to Moro raids, the Spaniards were forced to transfer the town to the present site and was named Puerto Galera. Spanish galleons coming from Mexico and Spain stopped by the Puerto Galera to take refuge during stormy weather before proceeding to Manila. In 1837, the seat of government was transferred to Calapan. Guarding the coasts of Puerto Galera was a Spanish warship, El Cañonero de Mariveles, which sank during a strong storm in November 18, 1879. A wooden cross was erected at Muelle as tribute. Revolutionaries from Puerto Galera participated in the overthrow of the Spanish government in Mindoro from 1898 to 1900 under the leadership of brothers Miguel and Estanislao Cobarrubias, Sr. During the American occupation, Captain Robert Offley was appointed military governor. On November 2, 1902, Puerto Galera was again made the capital of the province until 1903. It was annexed to Calapan in 1905 as a barrio. In 1919 it was made a municipal district. On February 21, 1928, under Act. No. 3415, it was organized into an independent mu-
4
nicipality. On February 27, 1942, the Japanese air force and naval auxiliary occupied the town until liberation in 1946. Today, the scenic Puerto Galera is the center of tourism in the province.

Puerto Galera Yacht Club Puerto Galera Yacht Club (PGYC) is located in Puerto Galera Bay (also called Muelle Bay) which is a stunning and almost fully enclosed body of water at the northernmost tip of Mindoro Island. PGYC is the accepted Cruising Yacht Club of the Philippines. It is a recognized hub for yacht cruising routes in and out of the West Pacific. International cruising yachts and crews flock to Puerto Galera to enjoy the beauty of the surroundings and the company of fellow cruising and racing sailors of whom there are many in the local community. Many international sailors have chosen to settle down in Puerto Galera and became active members of PGYC. The staff at PGYC is very hospitable and accommodating, and gives visiting sailing and motor yachts a warm welcome. They will assist with moorings, sailing matters and accommodation concerns. PGYC has about 28 moorings close to town and see to it that these are maintained in good order. If visitor moorings are full when a visitor arrives, assistance will be given for safe anchorages within Boquete Bay or Dalaruan Bay. Great care is asked when anchoring so as not to disturb the protected corals and giant clams found in the area. Visitor moorings can be viewed on the Internet from a webcam located on the main pier. PGYC was founded in 1991 by an enthusiastic group of yachtsmen who wished to make their home within the embrace of the historic bays and beaches that make up Puerto Galera. The surrounding beaches and coves found in Puerto Galera offer all the entertainment and facilities that one could wish for in a tropical paradise. PGYC offers both members and non-members sailing opportunities, as well as serious sail training courses. Those who sail using PGYC facilities are supervised by reliable and experienced instructors, safety boat operators and crew. About 25 sailing dinghies and catamarans are owned by the Club and available to guests. PGYC also involves itself by providing advice and directions regarding other non-club water activities for visitors such as casual dinghy sailing, sail-boarding, parasailing, swimming, jetskiing, water skiing and kayaking in rivers and the sea. In nearby areas, one can experience scuba diving, snorkeling, golf and tennis. Yachties, visitors from elsewhere in Philippines and local residents traditionally get together and get to know newcomers through PGYCs famous Friday night BBQ at the Clubhouse. Restaurants and food houses that offer local and international cuisines abound nearby. Guests can also hang out at the various bars on the Muelle Pier that the yachties also frequent and in the music pubs found in the area. The Club also organizes picnics, golf tournaments and hiking to the indigenous Mangyan areas. Through different activities PGYC contributes towards the livelihood and income of the town by promoting Puerto Galera as a key water sports destination and offering formal sail training to the town’s disadvantaged children. Associated with this program is the Sailing Scholarship Fund, which is financed by donations and proceeds from regattas and other activities. Major sailing regattas are organized each year to include all types of boats including keel boats, multi-hulls, Hobie 16s and dinghies. The All Souls Regatta, held over Halloween, is considered as its largest held event. This signals the start of the winter racing season, and gathers yacht owners from all over Philippines. PGYC organized races mostly comprise Pursuit Races wherein each yacht starts at a different time according to its individual handicap, and the winner is the yacht that crosses the finish line first. This allows yachts of all sizes and shapes to compete more or less equally, and all to finish more or less at the same time to raft-up and start partying. It can be very exciting as all yachts close in together on the finish. PGYC membership and annual dues are inexpensive, and it is not necessary to be a yachtie to join. Just email or call the Club. 10
