The Banaue Rice Terraces, considered one of the Wonders of the World, tops the list followed by the Spanish style houses in Vigan, Ilocos Sur. Among the country’s famous sites are Palawan’s Tubbataha Reef, a UNESCO Heritage site, Verde Island in Mindoro Oriental, Apo Reef National Park in Mindoro Occidental, the largest atoll-like reef in the country and home to 285 fish and 197 coral species, Apo Island Marine Reserve in Dumaguete, Negros Oriental, Balicasag and Pamilacan Islands in Bohol and Malapascua and Moalboal Islands in Cebu. 4

Sports enthusiasts will be amazed at the variety of facilities all over the country. Golfers can choose from the courses designed by famous golf celebrities, including country clubs that host international tournaments. Those who enjoy water sports can snorkel with the whale sharks in Donsol, Sorsogon or surf in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, Baler, Aurora, Daet, Camarines Sur and in Catanduanes province; Mountain climbers can head for Mt Apo in Davao, the highest peak at 9,689 feet, go trekking at Mt. Pinatubo or explore the Callao caves in Tuguegarao, Cagayan.
Gustatory Feast
Dining, Filipino style is not your usual meal. A lunch or dinner invitation is actually a celebration of friendship, topped with a rich cuisine influenced by Asian and European cooking techniques. Locals love to eat in groups, politely inviting everyone including strangers to partake in the meal. A feast will not be complete without a lechon, spit-roast whole pig served with liver sauce, adobo chicken and pork marinated in vinegar, soy sauce and garlic and stewed until tender, kare-kare, meat and vegetables cooked with peanut sauce served with shrimp paste, sinigang pork, or seafood in tamarind soup, grilled seafood and many more. The more adventurous are challenged to try the balut, boiled duck eggs with partially formed embryo, and dinuguan or pork blood stew served with steamed rice or puto, a local term for rice cakes. Aside from local cuisine there are rows and rows of restaurants in the city serving dishes from different parts of the world. Foreign food chains are also found in popular shopping malls.
The brave can go white river rafting in Chico River or in Cagayan de Oro River, kayaking and canoeing at the Bacuit Archipelago or at the St. Paul Subterranean Cave in Palawan; windsurf in Lake Caliraya or in Taal Lake, kite surf in Boracay or wakeboard in Pili, Camarines Sur.
Spa Indulgence
The Filipinos have a traditional healing massage called “hilot” which means touch therapy. It relaxes tired muscles and heals aching joints. Several spa clinics and massage centers have also mushroomed all over the country offering all different kinds of massage treatments. For a more luxurious spa weekend there’s Nurture Spa in Tagaytay, Mandala Spa in Boracay, Sanctuario Spa in Manila, Chi Spa Village in Shangri-La Mactan, Cebu, and at The Farm at San Benito in Batangas and many more.
Shopping
Shopaholics especially bargain hunters will enjoy going to the malls in the country. The top shopping centers are found in Metro Manila, Cebu and Davao offering everything from international brands to local products. In Manila, shoppers can go to Mall of Asia, the third largest mall in the world Mall of Asia, Robinson’s Place, Balikbayan Handicrafts, and Tutuban Center. In Makati and Ortigas there’s Greenbelt, Glorietta, Landmark Department Store, Greenhills Shopping Center, Megamall, Shangri-La Mall and Tiendecitas. In Cebu, check out the Ayala Center, the Gaisano Malls, Robinson’s Place, SM City, and for native delicacies, fresh produce and fresh and dried seafood, go to the Carbon and Tabo-an Markets. In Davao, shop at Aldevinco Shopping Center (for fabrics, batik, carvings) Victoria Plaza, Gaisano Mall and at the New City Commercial Center department store. City centers are also have tiangges, the Filipino version of flea markets where shoppers can haggle for the lowest price possible.
Festivals
Filipinos love to celebrate. They have a long list of festivals where people celebrate in the streets through religious processions and parades. The year opens with the Ati-atihan in Kalibo, Aklan. The event commemorates the feast of the Sto Nino with a week-long street party. 6

Pahiyas in Lucban, Quezon is on May 15, a harvest festival celebrating the feast of San Isidro Labrador. Colorful kiping and other thanksgiving offerings are displayed in houses that line the procession route. The Masskara Festival in Bacolod City is celebrated in October, coinciding with the city’s charter day. The city holds a mardigras-style parade complete with carnivals and fairs.
World Class Artistry
The theater and concert scene in the Philippines is alive with astounding performances by world class artists. The Cultural Center of the Philippines features performances by the Ballet Philippines, the Philippine Madrigal Singers, and the Bayanihan Dance Troupe. World-renowned artists Lea Salonga and Cecile Licad also hold concerts in major concert halls in Manila. The Center of Arts in San Antonio (CASA) in San Miguel, Zambales features violinist Alfonso “Coke” Bolipata and his Pundaquit talents. Other groups that showcase the Filipino performing talents are Philppine Educational Theater Association (PETA) Repertory Philippines, Atlantic Productions, and other independent production groups that hold shows at the New Port Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World, RCBC Auditorium, Onstage Greenbelt and other popular venues. In the Visual Arts scene, works of world-class Filipino masters Juan Luna, Felix Resurrection Hidalgo and Fabian de la Rosa, National Artists Fernando Amorsolo, Carlos Francisco, Victor Edades, Vicente Manansala, other Philippine painting greats and contemporary visual artists can be viewed at the Philippine National Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, the Ayala Museum and in galleries and University museums around the city.
The festivals are as many as towns in the entire archipelago. Other unique cultural events and activities include Santacruzan — a May time procession of beautiful women re-enacting St. Helen’s quest for the holy cross, the Black Nazarene procession in Quiapo held in January, the holy week rituals in San Fernando, Pampanga and the traditional Christmas rituals like the colorful lanterns, dawn masses and noche buena feasts.
Exciting Night Life
Evenings will never be boring in the Philippines. Every city is bustling with energy come sun down with restaurants, cafes and bars lighting up the busy streets. In Makati the country’s financial district, the night life sizzles at Greenbelt and Glorietta while at nearby Bonifacio Global City party goers troop to Serendra, Bonifacio High Street and Burgos Circle. Quezon City is another popular evening destination with establishments in Timog, Tomas Morato Eastwood City in Libis.
Colleges and universities in the Philippines are the training ground for internationally-recognized performance groups namely Dulaang UP (student theatre group), the UP Concert Chorus, UP Singing Ambassadors of the University of the Philippines, Ateneo College Glee Club and the Ateneo Chamber Singers of the Ateneo de Manila University, the UST Singers and the Salinggawi Dance Troupe of the University of Santo Tomas. The live concert scene at Araneta Coliseum and SM Arena are packed to rafters with concerts by local and international artists like Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Bieber, One Direction and other performers.
The city of Cebu is noted for its exciting evening entertainment. Check out the Ayala Mall and the different establishments in Osmena Blvd. The ultimate island-party fever is in Boracay. The island is noted for its carefree spirit and home to clubs and bars on the beach. 8

BE PART OF A UNIQUE CULTURE The Philippine archipelago is made up of 7,107 islands. It is part of the Southeast Asian region and spans 1,840 kilometers north to south. Taiwan lies in the northern border and the southern part is enclosed by Indonesian and Malaysian Borneo. At the Western and Eastern sides are the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Manila is the Capital of the Philippines which is 8 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, (GMT).
Culture
Ask any foreigner living in the Philippines about the uniqueness of the culture, and you will hear endless tales of their warmth and graciousness. Other nationalities are just as hospitable but Filipinos are a league of their own. They generally like to help others, including strangers. When visiting a new place, you can always count on some kind-hearted local who will point you to the right direction. The Philippines is also the only Christian country in Asia. More than 86 % of the population is Roman Catholic, 6 % belong to various nationalized Christian groups, and another 2 % belong over 100 different Protestant denominations.
Language
Language will not be a problem for retirees when they choose to live in the Philippines. It is the third largest English-speaking nation in terms of population. Almost every Filipino can understand and speak some English. There are two official languages -- Filipino and English. Filipino which is based on Tagalog, is the national language. English is widely used and is the medium of instruction in higher education. There are also eight (8) major dialects spoken by majority of the Filipinos: Tagalog; Cebuano; Ilocano; Hiligaynon or Ilonggo, Bicol, Waray, Pampango, and Pangasinense. Filipino is easy to learn, most foreigners can immediately pick up the basic expressions after a few weeks. Moreover Filipinos will be more than glad to teach their native language to their foreign guests.
Climate
Foreigners love the country’s tropical climate. March to May is hot and dry, June to October is rainy, November to February is cool. Average temperatures: 78F/25C to 90F/32C; humidity is 77%.
Health
Medical facilities in the country are at par with the world’s top health institutions. Private hospitals are accredited by international commissions on patient safety and health care quality. Filipino medical personnel and caregivers are in demand worldwide for their expertise, competency and their natural ability to extend care and compassion to their patients. Health-wise foreigners are in good hands, should they wish to retire in the Philippines. Quality healthcare are available in both private and public hospitals. The rates are quite affordable for foreigners 10
compared to the cost of medical procedures in their home country. Among the top hospitals in the country are St, Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig and Quezon City, Makati, Medical Center, Medical City in Pasig and Asian hospital in Muntinlupa. There are likewise several clinics and health centers all over major cities and towns. Because of the affordable rates and expert medical personnel the Philippines is fast becoming a more popular destination for medical tourism.
Transportation
Commuters can freely move about the metropolis with the variety of transportation options.
Taxi
Taxis are a convenient and comfortable means of travel in the city. All taxis are metered some even issue official receipts. Most drivers speak basic English, making communication very easy for both driver and passenger.
Trains
Metro Manila has three mass railway transit lines- LRT-1, MRT2 and MRT 3. LRT 1 runs in a north-south direction from Baclaran to Monumento, then it runs in an east-west direction from Monumento to North Avenue, linking the cities of Quezon City, Caloocan, Manila, Pasay and Parañaque. Passengers can transfer to the Purple Line at Doroteo Jose station, while passengers can transfer to the Blue Line at EDSA and North Avenue stations. MRT-2 runs the east-west direction of the Metro area. It goes through Santa Cruz passing several areas of Manila then San Juan, Quezon City, Marikina and Pasig. The track runs above Recto, Legarda , Magsaysay Boulevard, Aurora Boulevard, and Marcos Highway. MRT-3 runs in the north-south direction of the Metro area, through San Roque in Pasay, then Makati, Mandaluyong, Pasay and Quezon City. The track runs above segments of Epifanio de los Santos Avenue. The country also has a regional service -- the Philippine National Railway or PNR. It carries passengers all the way to the suburbs, and nearby provinces like Laguna.
Buses
Buses are a common sight on the major roads of Manila and in the distant provinces. Buses are classified as either air-conditioned or ordinary. The destinations are marked down on a large placard in front of the bus.
Boats
Being an archipelago, boats and ferries are very common around the islands. Bangkas are traditional boats used for shorter distances. Ferry boats are bigger and more comfortable, with several companies having daily scheduled trips. The fastest type of boat is the catamaran. It travels between the bigger islands, covering longer distances in a short time. 11
Jeepneys
The jeepney is the most popular and economical means of transportation. Distinctively Filipino, the colorful decorations embody the uniqueness of the culture. The designated routes are painted on its exterior with a small placard in the front indicating its main destination.
Tricycles
For short distances tricycles are used by commuters to get to their destination. A tricycle is actually a motor cycle attached to a passenger-cabin on a third wheel. Depending n the size it can carry as much as five passengers three inside the cabin, and two behind the driver.
Air Travel
The major airport in Manila is the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. It has four terminals NAIA 1, NAIA 2 also known as the Centennial Airport, NAIA 3 and NAIA 4. Other airports include the Clark International Airport in Angeles City, Mactan-Cebu International Airport and Subic Bay International Airport in Subic Bay.

Banks/Money Changer
Foreign residents may open an account in the Philippines by presenting their ACR- I card or Alien Certificate of Registration. Some banks may allow you to open an account without the ACR- I card, but it is still best to double check. Banks have different requirements. Foreign ATM cards with visa electron and plus logos can be used in Philippine banks. Please make sure the ATM carries the appropriate logo before doing your transaction. There is an additional surcharge of 200 pesos is per transaction. Finding an ATM in the Philippines is not a problem. Almost all major shopping malls have several ATM machines. Some local bank ATMs have a withdrawal limit, which ranges from PHP 4,000 to P20,000 per withdrawal, and may also impose a limit of 2 transactions per day. There are lots of money changers all over the Philippines. You can go to any bank, or a foreign exchange centers in shopping malls and in every major commercial area.
Courier Service/ Money Transfer
There are a number of local and international courier companies in the Philippines providing delivery services for major cities worldwide. For international courier service there’s UPS, DHL Express and TNT, while the local companies are Air 21, 2Go and LBC Express. For money transfer services, there are Western Union branches all over the country, even in remote provinces.

Exemption from • Philippine Bureau of Immigration Annual Certificate of Registration (ACR) / I-Card, Alien Registration (AR), Emigration Clearance Certificate (ECC), Reentry Permit (RP), and Special Return Certificate (SRC). • Customs Duties and Tax for the importation of household goods and personal effects up to US$7,000.00; • Tax from pension and annuities; • Travel tax, if stay in the country is less than one year from the last entry date; • Student Visa/Special Study Permit for childrendependent; and 3. Access to Greet and Assist Program at from the international airports; 4. Free subscription of the PRN (PRA Newsletter); 5. Discount privileges from services offered by accredited PRA Merchant Partners; 6. Assistance in obtaining documents from other government agencies like: • Alien Employment Permit (AEP) from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in case of employment in the Philippines; • Driver’s License from the Land Transportation Office (LTO); • Tax Exemption/Extension Certificate from the Department of Finance (DoF) • Tax Identification Number (TIN) from the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) for purposes of setting-up a business in the country; • Clearance from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI). 56
1) SRRV SMILE – for active / healthy principal retirees 35 years old and above who would just like to maintain their Visa deposit of US$20,000.00 in any of the PRA designated banks; 2) SRRV CLASSIC – for active / healthy principal retirees who would opt to use their Visa deposit of US$10,000.00/US$20,000.00 (50 years old & above) or US$50,000.00 (35 to 49 years old) to purchase condominium units or use for long term lease of house and lot; 3) SRRV HUMAN TOUCH – for ailing principal retirees, 35 years old and above, who are shown to have medical/clinical needs and services. Under this option, the retiree only needs to have a Visa deposit of US$10,000.00, a monthly pension of at least US$1,500.00 and a Health Insurance Policy; and 4) SRRV COURTESY – for former Filipinos (35 years old & above), and foreign nationals (50 years old & above) who have served in the Philippines as diplomats, ambassadors, officers/staff of international organizations. The visa deposit is US$1,500.00. There are documents and fees that must be accomplished in applying for SRRV as a principal: a. Accomplished SRRV Application Form (downloadable at www.pra.gov.ph) – Information must be typed written and ensure that all information requested are answered; b. Medical Certificate (downloadable at www.pra. gov.ph) – may be secured from the country of origin. However, said document must be translated in English, if necessary, and authenticated by the Philippine Embassy/Consular Office nearest the place where the Certificate was secured from. Applicant may opt to secure the Certificate in the Philippines from any licensed physician/clinic/ hospital. If the certificate has been secured in the Philippines, there is no need for any authentication. A Medical certificate is only valid within 6 months from the date it was secured. PRA has an accredited clinic and we can assist you in securing said certificate; 57
c. Police Clearance – an Applicant need to secure this clearance from the country of origin. Said document must be translated in English, if necessary, and authenticated by the Philippine Embassy/Consular Office nearest the place where the Clearance was secured from; d. NBI Clearance – in addition to the Police Clearance, a NBI Clearance (Philippine Document) is needed when an applicant has stayed in the Philippines for more than 30 days prior to his application for the SRR Visa. PRA can accompany the applicant in securing this document; e. Bank Certification - A visa deposit must be remitted to PRA’s designated bank which is the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP). The Bank will send PRA a notarized Bank Certification after the remittance has been received by the Bank. The amount of the Visa deposit depends on the SRRV Option that the applicant has chosen (Remittance instruction may be downloaded from the PRA Website). A principal applicant may include in his application his spouse, and children who are below 21 years old and unmarried, as his dependents. In cases that the Principal applicant will include more than two (2) dependents, an additional visa deposit of US$15,000.00 for each additional dependent must be remitted under the name of the Principal applicant; f. Original Passport with valid stay in the Philippines – in cases where the tourist visa expires while the SRRV is being processed, the applicant must have it extended. PRA may assist in the extension of the tourist visa; g. Photos – 2x2 (12 pieces); h. Application Fee of US$1,400.00 – this application fee or processing/service fee is a one-time payment only and this encompasses all other fees for the Bureau of Immigration and PRA in relation to the application for the SRR Visa. In case that an applicant discontinues his/her application, the Application Fee may be reimbursed but the amount of US$200.00 will be deducted as service fee. However, if in a case wherein the applicant discontinues while the documents are already with 58
the Bureau of Immigration, application fee is nonrefundable already. In cases where in the processing must be discontinued (needs to return to his country or for any other emergency reasons), the documents including the passport may be pulled out from the Bureau of Immigration. The applicant may proceed with his application later on but needs to pay an additional revalidation fee of Php5, 520.00 (Bureau of Immigration required fee); i. PRA Annual Fee (PAF) of US$360.00 – this fee is payable upon joining the program and every year thereafter as long as the retiree is a holder of the SRR Visa. A principal Applicant must pay US$100 for each additional dependent in excess of two (2); For SRRV dependent-applicants (spouse and children), they need to accomplish: a. Accomplished SRRV Application Form; b. Medical Certificate; c. Police Clearance (and NBI Clearance, if necessary) for Spouse, and for children who are 18 years old and above; d. Marriage Certificate for the spouse and Birth Certificate for the child; e. Original Passport with valid stay in the Philippines; f. Photos; g. Application Fee of US$300.00 for each joining dependent. All documents coming from outside of the Philippines must be translated into English, if necessary and authenticated by the Philippine Embassy/Consulate. j. Applicant must submit the above original documents and 2 sets of photocopied documents. After submission of complete documents and payment of fees in the Office, PRA can endorse the application to the Bureau of Immigration. PRA will only process SRRV applications received in the Philippines. The processing of the application usually takes 10 to 15 working days. Upon the issuance (sticker-stamp on the passport), PRA will request the presence of the retiree-applicant in the PRA Office to take welcome and take the Oath of Affirmation as a new retiree-member.
