An ideal retirement haven brings to mind warm weather, powdery beaches, scenic views, heavenly dishes and friendly people. A large number of people are retiring in the Philippines mainly to experience a great life in a tropical paradise without spending too much. World-class and affordable healthcare, high quality of standard living for a very low cost, wonderful and hospitable people, government assistance and minimal language barrier are factors that attracts foreigners to retire, reside and invest in the Philippines. Healthcare in the Philippines is of good standard. There are Joint Commission International (JCI)-accredited hospitals like St.Luke’s, Medical City, Makati Medical Centre and A0sian Hospital. Practically speaking, hospital costs and medicines are cheap in the Philippines. The amount of co-pay in the US may be practically equal to the amount of the whole medical procedure in the Philippines. With this kind of healthcare system a foreign retiree will be able to save a lot from their funds. Also, the doctors and nurses are well trained, highly skilled and professionally competent and capable of giving excellent health services. Recently, Philippine Health Insurance Corporation provides insurance coverage and ensure affordable and accessible health care services to foreign retirees and former Filipino nationals. The cost of living in the Philippines is with no doubt cheaper relative to many places in the world. This is the perfect place if you want your money to go a lot further. Most foreigners live comfortably in the Philippines for about $800 to $1,200 a month and that is already a pretty great deal of leisure and luxury. Food is abundant and pretty affordable. One would be able to savor international and local cuisines. A foreigner may also enjoy affordable, fast and stable access to the internet which is an absolute necessity for them, not only to get a hold of all the important information on visa requirements, public transportation, local events, etc., but also to keep in touch with their relatives abroad. Cable television is attainable for just $12 a month with the option of adding foreign channels for a minimal cost. 25
Further, the Philippines is the only country in Asia that uses English as their second official language. It is easy to integrate with Filipinos. English is very widely spoken even in the provinces. Signages and instructions are in English, and daily newspapers are in English. There are also newspapers in Chinese, Japanese, Korean etc.
I. Excellent Reasons to Retire in the Philippines
Its tropical climate is nature’s blessing especially to those who dream to escape harsh winter seasons. It is very favorable to the elderly who have ailments that are triggered by a colder climate. Also, the society is innately respectful and caring for the elderly.
There are excellent reasons to retire in the Philippines, which makes it an absolutely “more fun” destination this side of the globe!
RETIREMENT
The attitude of Filipinos towards foreigners and fellow Filipinos are exceptional especially when it comes to hospitality and being friendly. Aside from the country’s stunning natural assets, one thing that makes a foreigner’s stay extraordinary is their interactions with Filipinos. And as Jon Stewart quoted (American, SRRV holder since 2011) would say: “One of the reasons my family and I choose to live in the Philippines is that the people are warm, kind and reliable. We are happy to make our home here among such people.” Because of these factors, the Philippines is dubbed as one of the world’s leading retirement destinations.
Enjoy Filipino dishes like adobo, sinigang, kare-kare, pinakbet, bicol express, and the freshest sea food dishes you can imagine. Experience the country’s most popular festivals like Cebu City’s Sinulog, Aklan’s Ati-Atihan, Iloilo’s Dinagyang, Baguio’s Panagbenga Flower Festival, Davao’s Kadayawan, Bohol’s Sandugo; and islands like Palawan, Panglao, Boracay, Caramoan, Camiguin, and Coron. Shop in the some of the world’s largest malls like Mall of Asia, SM Aura, Megamall, Greenbelt, Glorietta, Shangri-la, Rockwell, Greenhills Center, Robinson’s Galleria, Robinson’s Magnolia among others. Enjoy world-class casinos and gaming venues like Casino Filipino, Solaire Resort & Casino, and Resorts World Manila. The cost of living in the Philippines is much cheaper. No doubt about this. And think of the many business opportunities The Philippines has world-class healthcare. We have JCI-accredited hospitals like St.Luke’s, Medical City, Makati Medical Center, Asian Hospital, and Chong Hua. We also have locally accredited quality and affordable hospitals like Cardinal Santos, University of the East Medical Center, Lorma Medical Center, University of Santo Tomas Hospital, Manila Doctors, Medical Center Manila, Far Eastern University Hospital, Cebu Doctors, and Chinese General Hospital, and leading government hospitals like the Philippine General Hospital, Philippine Heart Center, the Lung Center of the Philippines, Philippine Children’s Medical Center, and the National Kidney and Transplant Institute, among others. The Philippines also has quality health insurance and health maintenance organizations, such as the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, Maxicare, Philcare, and Medicard. International health insurance coverage by providers such as Van Breda, Aetna, United Healthcare, Carefirst, Humana, Molina Healthcare, Blue Cross, TriCare, and Kaiser International is accepted in Philippine hospitals. The cost of co-pay in the US may be practically equal to the cost of the whole medical procedure in the Philippines. The emergence of independent physician associations such as United Physician International, Inc. will help make Medicare benefits portable to the Philippines. Third party administrators and other facilitators are providing more mechanisms for Medicare portability.
The Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) which is a government agency under the Department of Tourism is mandated to promote the Philippines not just as an investment and tourism destination but as a retirement destination and second home for the world’s seniors, retirees, and migrants through the Special Resident Retiree’s Visa (SRRV). The SRRV is a non-immigrant multiple-entry, indefinite-stay visa. With the SRRV, the holders may stay in the Philippines for as long as they want without giving up their citizenship. Other benefits include: multiple-entry privileges, ta exemption privileges, access to greet and assist programs, discount privileges from services offered by PRA merchant partners, and assistance in obtaining documents from other government agencies, among others. To date, there are approximately 43,000 foreign retirees enrolled in the SRRV program. Most are from China, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, USA, India, Germany, United Kingdom and Australia. If interested to know more about the Philippine government’s retirement visa, please visit our website at www.pra.gov.ph or you may call us through telephone number +632.8481412 Make the Philippines your retirement destination! Experience a comfortable lifestyle and live among the millions of friendly and caring Filipinos. 26
Aggressive lobbying by groups (such as US Medicare PH) identified with the Philippines and Latin American countries is bringing the passage of a bill making Medicare portable to countries like the Philippines and Mexico more and more likely. Furthermore, more policy studies by an increasing number of respectable research groups are providing the metrics to justify health outsourcing and retirement migration. It is easy to integrate with Filipinos. English is very widely spoken. Signages and instructions are in English, and daily newspapers are in English. There is freedom of expression, and as PRA retiree-member Jon Stewart would say: “One of the reasons my family and I choose to live in the Philippines is that the people are warm, kind and reliable.We are happy to make our home here among such people.” Many localities see and promote their towns and cities as RADAR (Retirement Areas Deemed as Retiree-friendly): Makati, Quezon City, Cebu City, Talisay City, Liloan, Bogo, Cadiz, Bacolod, Dumaguete, Victorias, Baguio,Tagaytay, Davao City, Zamboanga City. Also economic zones like Subic, Clark and Zamboanga. Retirement facility projects include: a. Cebu SRP Project to host cutting-edge andlargest retirement-related facility hectares, 3 buildings, 800 units;
with 1.25
b. Tagaytay offers a unique project with best of wellness and best of retirement. La Bella in Tagaytay is an intergenerational project consisting of a condotel for visiting relatives of retirees and residential condos for retirees. Wellness packages are included in the purchase of the units;

For active tourists/retirees, the Philippines offers many sports adventures/ activities. One can snorkel with the gentle giants and whale sharks in Cebu or Sorsogon. Explore the beautiful corals of the famous and world class diving sites of Puerto Galera, Batangas, and Cebu. Brave the waves of Baler, Siargao and La Union. Join the Philippines’ most popular festivals like Cebu City’s Sinulog, Aklan’s Ati-Atihan and Iloilo’s Dinagyang. The serene blue waters and white sand beaches of breath-taking islands like Coron, Boracay and Bohol are choices to enjoy and experience the whole year round.
To live in a place where you can watch the sun rise and set could be a new experience to many, who are foreign to this kind of life’s simple joys. In some parts of the world, where the sun’s daily greeting is almost unusual, having a warm day in a tropical island like the Philippines or basking under the sun is an event.
d. LifeCare Residences Cebu has tied up with the Manosa Group of Architect Manosa to develop a 2-hectare retirement facility in Cebu. e. Oroland in Bacolod is an international oriented, green, intergenerational community with access to metropolitan amenities.
