EDITOR’S LETTER

Welcome to the First Port City!

F

irst, I’d like to say thank you for picking up our newest Bainbridge Community Guide and welcome you to the place I’ve called home for the past five years. Growing up in a small town, I thought I already knew what Bainbridge had to offer. However, as it has exploded in growth these past few years; my love for it has grown as well. When I first arrived, the Downtown was just beginning the renovation that would make it the destination it is today. The American, Southern Philosphy Brewing, Diablo’s, Sio’s, J.Christine Esthetique and countless other businesses had yet to open their doors. But, I hung in there hoping that the place the Downtown Development Authority had described would soon come to fruition, and it did. I am so glad I hung in there. Now, I have a little more waiting to do as the renovation to Chason Park takes place. I know that will be the new “go to” spot, as river-front apartments are soon to break ground, along with a splash

4

pad, a master staircase leading down to the river, more walking trails, a disc golf course and an upgraded camp ground near the river. I hope this guide serves you well as you explore our ever-growing town, and for those who already know the town well; I hope this guide reminds you of all the beauty and special things that make us proud to call this little corner of Georgia our home.

CITY OF BAINBRIDGE CITY COUNCIL

HISTORY Origin : Years before white settlers arrived, an Indian village known as Puckanawhitla was located on the north side of the present site of Bainbridge, near the abandoned brickyard north of Oak City Cemetery. In 1765, James Burges built a trading post nearby, and by 1778 the town was called Burges. In 1817, Fort Hughes was built in the vicinity of present-day Chason Park, south of the Puckanawhitla/ Burges sites. The town was known as Fort Hughes until 1824. The legislature incorporated Bainbridge in 1829. Location: Bainbridge is located on the Flint River at the intersection of U.S. 27 and Highway 84, and is 38 Name: Bainbridge is named after Commodore William Bainbridge, born in Princeton, N.J., in 1774, who raised himself from the rank of common sailor to the highest rank in the Navy. Both Bainbridge and Decatur were commanders of Old Ironsides, USS Constitution. The Decatur County Courthouse can be seen through the mossy trees in Willis Park.

STREETSCAPING

Streetscaping Bainbridge leaders have been working to prioritize and improve key downtown streets like Broad Street with attractive brick and concrete streetscaping, street trees, and ornamental streetlights. City leaders and crews have done an admirable job investing in downtown streetscaping, including exposing many of the city's historic brick streets and working to imporve downtown streets for pedestrians and motorists. The updated streetscape master plans follow the build on these improvements, focusing their efforts on key corridors of Calhoun, Broad and West Street, as well as identifying potential improvements for downtown side streets like Clark Street and Clay Street. After suffering a tremendous hit by Hurricane Michael in 2018, the city must work hard to replant trees throughout town and re-earn Bainbridge's title as the Oak City. Along Calhoun Street, the updated master plan proposes the addition of 10 live oaks and 40 flowering Natchez crape myrtles. These trees would create an attractive, economical, and easily maintained gateway to downtown for generations to come.

Along Borad Street, improvements expand existing streetscaping to include planted bump-outs at key intersections and more than 60 new angled parking spaces. The bump-outs would allow for long-lived large canopy street trees including laurel oaks and sycamores.

DOWNTOWN

CHASON PARK EXPANSION

Chason Park Expansion The vision for the Chason Park Expansion project is to create a continuous park corridor, create a portal to the river from downtown, enhance visibility/access to downtown, and create a desirable framework for redevelopment. While the need to take action to revitalize the downtown goes back decades, the current effort began in 2014 with the completion of the Downtown Master Plan. The plan, which included an assessment of virtually every aspect of the downtown district, used public input along with technical expertise from consultants and stakeholders to develop priorities for the redevelopment effort. One of the primary objectives of this plan was to develop a recreational destination along the waterfront that would draw people, especially families with children, to the downtown. The completion of the project would further two objectives, enhance recreational opportunities and generate economic growth. Chason Park is an historic location. It was here that DeSoto and his men crossed the Flint River over three centuries ago. The El Camino Real, the King’s Highway, also crossed the grounds. Located within

the Park is the site of Fort Hughes, built in 1817 by U.S. Soldiers under the command of Capt. John M. McInstosh, and the grave of the first soldier, Bugler Hughes, killed in the Seminole Indian War.
