In Pursuit Of Perfect Sounds
Audio should be seen as the communication of a musical inspiration; so the reproduction of such on any sound system should mean that the original Information be heard clear and in all minute detail, but most of all in the way it was intended by the Artist(s). ! Yet, remember that one recorded CD is never the same as another ! ‘Any sound system’ is of course such blunt statement ‘Isn’t It’ well no not really if I think about it - actually not at all! Well the purpose of this booklet is not to go into Home Audio HiFi etc. were we get these brilliant HiFi Sounds with a wide Sound stage and brilliant Imaging right in front of us or around us etc. just like in a Concert Hall, and this booklet is also not addressing automotive car systems which you hear coming down the road a mile away …… NO, this booklets intent is actually to address more the High Quality Sound Reproduction in Vans (People mover like 7 or 8 Seater etc.) and with that the use of external loudspeaker enclosures! Why Vans you may ask; well to explain this try to visualize yourself in a Concert Hall of normal size – say about 800.00 cubic Feet of air displacement volume! Now look at an average cars Air displacement volume, and then look at a Van’s Air displacement volume, and in particular a Van which is very luxuries, and build like for example the Nissan Elgrand, Type I - 1997 to 2002 or the Type II - 2003 to 2010 - Ongoing. Air displacement volume in automotive applications is still the most detrimental problem to achieve sounds of high quality because of its limited air volume of say maybe (+-) 80.00 cubic feet! Many people think that the glass areas and maybe also the roof area are problems, but I found that through proper placement & angels of the sound reproduction components (external loudspeaker) in a proper setup in general this can be greatly overcome. Anyway, there is also the seating arrangement and so on, and yes all these items are very important, but for the start I would like to address something else which is unfortunately totally forgotten in an automotive setup, yet not if it would come to a HiFi setup in an arrangement in your home.
WebFlashArtistry@gmail.com
OK, I do talk about the atrocious and inferior Manufacturing of any of the automotive external Speaker Enclosures or for that matter everything in an automotive application except any of the electronically items like the Head units, Speakers, Equalizer and Amplifiers etc. Nothing like this would be acceptable in any way if you would think about an enclosures in an HiFi setup at home so why not have the same or similar HiFi quality sounds easily available in a Van. I would actually like to go that far to say that most people which drive Vans are driving them not only because they do like them, but they also drive in them at least 96% - 98% on any of there travels by themselves or if lucky with one (1) passenger in front yet seldom with passengers in the rear area! Simple, think now about how often did you get disturb out of what ever reason listening to your sounds on your HiFi setup at home, and so why not enjoy this kind of quality sound in your Van because after all that is the place were you spend most of your time when travelling for example to your work place or from, and to your home and so on, and most likely ‘Un-Disturbed’. Well, let’s start with the first couple of projects which are actually very similar! Two types of External Enclosures originally build in China: Ÿ 1 pair of 6 “x 9” Vented Enclosures bought in NZ on TradeMe Ÿ 2 pairs of 6” Vented Enclosures bought in AUS on E-Bay and imported to NZ. Now to better understand the idea, and the work plan behind this project I have made up Images to explain it all, and these Images are shown on the following pages! PLEASE NOTE: All computer drawings are shown in a top view! And you have to imaging that the original Front & Rear speakers are setup on different plains / levels which would mean for the front set of speakers low mounted in the front doors, and the rear set which are usually slid above the rear seats so these Images of course do not show the difference in level.
WebFlashArtistry@gmail.com
Original setup Front / Rear speakers and a 45 degree angle they would beam!
Facing Forward
Notice the very flat Diamond shape areas & the offsets of the sound spots! UpperCut - SpotTheArtography / Spotting, Finding, Promoting Innovative & Cre@ive People within Fine Art Photography 10
This first Image on the left side is showing the directional 45 degree beaming of a original basic setup of a front & rear speaker system in a Car or Van. I’m sure that you agree that this looks very lam especially when you will see any of the other drawings to come! Now while we are still at this original type of setup I like to mention that this is set out in a Van, but imaging just the same in a Car which is much shorter, and what would happen with this type of setup! Yet I believe that there is hope for such floored setup; as per my own experience I would suggest that you do just use this type for or maybe only as a fill in arrangement! Simple just to fill, compliment & enhance your real and proper setup and its sounds. As mentioned before the Placing & the Angles of any external speaker component is extremely detrimental to the sound quality and the power levels you would like to reach. So let’s see what Enclosures I found to be suited for these first two projects!
1.34 Kg First Unpacked
1) 4.3 Kg & 2) 4.7 Kg Re-Developed
WebFlashArtistry@gmail.com
Two very nice designed sets - a really good looking 6 x 9 & a 6 vented enclosure type which stand out from these very ordinary (ugly & or boring comes to mind) sealed sets normally available!!! The Images 1&2 are showing the enclosures as they were unpacked so simple AS IS (Weight 1.3 to 1.5 Kg each ) and what you get for your money is a little Black & Grey carpeted box with a connection point a short length of wire to connect to the speaker as well as some damping material. Now if you would wanted to do something to improve the quality of sound you would have to start taking these totally apart, and well that is when the fun begins and you actually realize how shabby they are manufactured. I would give these on a scale (10 out of 10) for Design and for the Development Idea an (8), but for the workmanship and everything else a (-8) and that only because I found that each was different from the other - actually worse then the other if that is possible!
WebFlashArtistry@gmail.com

Still these two Images on the previous pages in mind I will just show off an Image of the first 6” enclosure (Now 6.5”) which is at an stage similar to the bought version yet Re-Defined, Re-Developed, Enhanced, Heavily Modified! Showing the vented side and the new connection cup which has now 2 x ¼ “- 6.5 mm mono jack connections (wired in parallel) which has a special reason of course, and which I will explain later in more detail. The enclosure was professionally recovered with better much thicker material. Now, I assume that you will be curious about the white coloured panels on both sides and so you should be because they are not just ornamental, but they are actually quiet purposeful and special. These panels are ‘Single Action ****’ Resonance Absorber Plates (similar to Shock Absorber) they are both loose mounted / Floating Enclosure Resonance Dispersion Reflectors!
WebFlashArtistry@gmail.com
You mite ask what is that - well look at these as a Sandwich - as they work like this - Medium Surface Density To Very Soft Surface Density To Hard Surface Density (these plates are covered with soft high quality glossy / shiny white paint). You can also see that the inside of these boxes are covered with a High Performance Resonance Dampening material to reduce or eliminate excessive enclosure resonance! These 4 times 6 (Now 6.5) enclosures are vented, but also you need to know that they were rebuild to accompany very high quality Midrange driver (NOT Midrange / Woofer) which means so much as that the speaker manufacturing working frequency range lies above 150 Hz and up to around 8000 Hz so I have these throttled at the bottom end to 300 Hz, but not to the top end - 8000 Hz to Infinity so no restriction towards the top end! Not needed. They also have another protective item attached within which is a Bass Blocker at 200 Hz.
WebFlashArtistry@gmail.com
In Pursuit Of Perfect Sounds
Well, now we talking! Here in view is the imported High Pass Filter 300 Hz as well as the HiFi Special High Grade 13 Gauge imported speaker wire. The basic weight of this enclosure is now quiet solid (Mid stage of Development) and up from the original 1.3 to 1.5 Kg b to 4.3 Kg +, and 4.7 Kg so the reduction of resonance should lie well over 80%. Purity in midrange is not created in air resonance volume, but in the destruction of reverberation effects especially in small boxes like these ones! As well as that the Loudspeaker Chassis / Drivers have no rubber surround, and are quiet stiff so any protection against unwanted bass and endless Inside & Outside Resonance it is imperative if Midrange Purity = Perfect Sounds are the goal in such a complex project.
WebFlashArtistry@gmail.com
Project Sheet: Page 1 ‘6”x 9” & (6” - 6.5”) Vented Enclosures’ First up I like to say that these two projects are just the beginning and a small part in a quiet complex development project to Design Develop & Build a Nissan Elgrand Van into a Sound Van! There is not much to it actually because I have been driving Vans myself for many years now, and so I have build many systems and experienced the ‘Real Perfect Sounds’ which I’m talking all throughout here every single day for at least 2 hours + a day, and that as said over a very long time now! Ÿ The general idea for these two small projects is to get the Enclosures heavy & that possible without adding unwanted / not needed items to reduce the Enclosure Resonance, but also to make them heavy enough to use very short solid speaker spikes to decouple the Enclosures from the Vans floor. Now my Attraction with these two types of Enclosures was that both were vented versions as well as had rounded backs & the angle of the front speaker mounting plate was 30 degree which is quiet different to any other Enclosure I known to date. 1. The first set of 6 x 9 Enclosures will be build as a test version, and as a full Midrange setup with high quality 2 way Infinity driver (2/4 Ohm special trade mark of Infinity) which special Tweeter swivel arrangement of 350 degree has also a moveable 15 degree tilt adjustable towards the top, bottom & left and right. This set will be covered in a new booklet! 2. The second set of (6” now 6.5”) Enclosures are actually two pair (4) boxes - two for the R/H & L/H side, so all four speaker enclosures have each one very good high quality Lanzar pure 8 Ohm Midrange driver so that is why these are wired in parallel to be used in a 4 Ohm configuration, but also if required separately one only in an 8 Ohm configuration.
WebFlashArtistry@gmail.com
Project Sheet: Page 2 ‘6” x 9” & (6” - 6.5”) Vented Enclosures’ As mentioned several times before ‘Placement & Angles’, and as you can see the angle of both types of Enclosures is 30 degree, and by using Infinity Driver we have an extra (+-) 15 degree available for the Tweeters! So all in all you can see that Audio works with 15 degree angles like 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 degree, but mostly 15, 30 & 45 angles are comely used or mentioned. These angles will also give any automotive application real power in directing sounds optimal in areas defined! Which then again is part of the setup / placement. **** ‘Single Action’ is only used with small to medium size enclosures, and for larger once or mainly with woofer enclosures I use ‘Double Action’ which is of course more effective in cutting down drastically the harmful Enclosure Resonance back / standing waves etc. If you would like to see this type of setup please refer to one of my other booklets which addresses the build of a 10” Dual Voice Coil (DVC) Sealed Woofer Enclosure (same manufacture from China as the smaller 6” x 9” and 6” (now 6.5”) enclosures).
Please Note: I always wanted to test a higher order then ‘Double Action’ yet never had the time to date to do that so maybe something to thing about for the future ….
WebFlashArtistry@gmail.com
As mentioned before: ‘Purity in midrange is not created in air resonance volume, but in the destruction of reverberation effects especially in small boxes like these ones!’ as well as that everything has to be done against unwanted bass and endless In & Outside resonance to obtain the wanted Midrange Purity = Perfect Sounds. So as you can see in the Image below I did not stop at the enclosure, but also covered the magnet structure of each loudspeaker chassis because of more then one reason. This time it is resonance of course and that truly should not be underestimated, but also to reduce the magnetic beaming properties of any of the chassis as I included electronic equipment within the enclosures! Etc. I included also an Image of the drivers frontal view on the other side to show that this is a pure midrange chassis as there is no rubber surround needed for what it is used for!

Please Note: The background for these project Images is a 1963, Series I - Jaguar E-Type engine which had a good height to be useful for these photos as it is sitting in a frame to be run once I have finished it in a day or two. This engine was fully restored and is attached to a 5 speed modern gearbox (brand new from the US) going into a original fully restored & build up Series I, E-Type car. In general if anybody has questions about any of my projects published please do not hesitate to send me an E-mail Roland E W Mucke on WebFlashArtistry@gmail.com And if somebody wanted some work done like Enclosures or complete Vans please let me know as I’m happy to help as long it is NOT just for Bum-Bum.
WebFlashArtistry@gmail.com
Project Sheet: Page 3 ‘Placing & Angles’ among many-many others! This section mainly will show Images of ideas to place the loudspeakers in areas so that the setup goals can be achieved in creating not just sound, but the reproduction of the perfect sound! All the setups have been well tested and are separately as well as in combination with each other possible to run. There are certain differences to remember in the setup - Mainly what it is what is required - and in my personal case it was & is first Staging & Imaging over the power / loudness, but that is to me Important as well, and then of course the midrange purity of the sounds in general at low & high levels of listening! 1) First & Foremost - The Imaging / Staging of the sounds. Ÿ 2) First & Foremost - The Midrange purity of the sounds. 3) First & Foremost - The Loudness of the played sounds. 4) In this type of project Bass comes with it - Naturally !!! Ÿ I know very well that there are many aspects which have to be in consideration, but I think most of all this one - Music Likes & Dislikes = Music Taste! Ÿ OK, as in my case again I do like nearly all music as long they are not only Bum-Bum or their are to Metallic in content. Ÿ My kind these days is everything from Classical to Hard Rock 70, 80, 90 and so on, but I love world music like B-Tribe, Enigma, Deep Forest, Karunesh, Areda, Era type of music but I also like Zuchero, YES, Alan Parson, Brian May, Pink Floyd, Mike Oldfield, Moya Maire Brennen and more! I’m really quiet open minded when it comes to music in general I like good harmonic sounds, and good female voices which is always the greatest challenge as they are not the easy once to reproduce perfectly. The first Image is a basic setup which can be enhance upon drastically by just taking the active speakers placing them on top of the seat were a person would normally sits. Check out the difference in angle which opens up by jut moving the speaker backwards.

Project Sheet: Page 4 ‘Placing & Angles’ among many-many others! The only consideration here to watch out for is the angle of the faceplate of the speakers! which could make a great difference in the dispersion of the speakers power using a loudspeaker (Sealed Or Vented) with a 0 degree, 15 degree or a 30 degree faceplate angle. I would use here the most powerful speakers as lead speakers in such setup (as in my own setup I used first up 2 x 350 RMS (6” x 9”) Boschmann loudspeaker in sealed boxes with AS IS 5 degree angle) now to understand this all a little more watch out for the purple lines which give you an indication of the 45 degree dispersion angles of the speakers & then look at the associated diamond shaped areas as well. Now as you can see I used 150 RMS Aluminium Heavy Duty Bullet Horn Tweeters for the rear (take note of special location these are placed in !!!), and if you also take a closer look at the angles on the windscreen as they indicate a reasonable amount of front Imaging / Staging, but these can be greatly enhanced by a set of nice soft dome tweeters in the very top corners of the screen because of the windscreen angle and shape. As I said before this is a very basic setup so to my own liking the sound dispersion angles towards the windscreen would have to be greatly altered / improved to create a more powerful Imaging / Staging of the sounds! Well with that said I want Imaging & Staging to be as powerful as, but mainly in the rear and for the front that should only be considered and seen as an enhancement, but NOT as a main feature. Please view the finished Midrange Loudspeaker Enclosures on the next pages! and evaluate the enclosures as when they were bought & how they are now. **** And by the way the secondary enclosures (without electronics) have now a total weight of 4.3 Kg (from before 1.3 Kg). ****

Now let’s take a preview of some of the other booklets I have or soon will publish along side of this one to see what there is as well, and what is part of this large UpperCut Audio - ‘Pursuit Of Perfect Sounds’ & with it the ‘Sound Project Van’. In any case please do not hesitate to visit any of the other Links and booklets advertised throughout these booklets as I’m sure one or two will catch your Interest & Attention! The Image below is out of the Book 3 which is the Re-Designing, Manipulating & Enhancing of a Sub Woofer Enclosure with a 10” Dual Voice Coil, DVC - BOSS Phantom Driver which I had worked on before so it is not quiet as it was unpacked when bought new. Yet I have to say that it was only the plain enclosure with a larger connection panel for the DVC speaker chassis and better dampened, but otherwise very standard.

Nothing special as you can see nothing at all; just a by the thousands manufactured enclosure out of a cardboard box! $35.99 plus Freight maybe another $14.00 so that is it! = $ 50.00 + a Sub Woofer, and what you got is Crappy - say the least. Say that this box at arrival had a overall weight of 6.5 Kg ‌. So lets Re-Develop THIS the UpperCut way by creating a beautiful & most of all a great sounding Enclosure now weighing in with 17.8 Kg
