Czech garnet…. red as blood, full of secrets, passions and magic. Did you know that the Czech garnet is, among other garnets mined in many locations in the world, as unique as the Colombian emeralds or the Burmese rubies? Garnets also have many legends. For centuries they have been considered as a stone of pilgrims and travelers who wore them as a talisman. According to legend, Noah had a lamp made of a garnet on his ark, which helped him navigate the ship in the evening darkness. It was rumored that glowing night garnets would protect their wearer from evil. In the Middle Ages, the Knights used the garnets not only for decoration, but also for their protective power from injuries, as it gave the warriors a sense of immortality. Another legend claims that tiny crystals of red garnets are fossilized drops of blood of the gods. Garnets symbolize fire, blood, and the heart, making it a favorite gift for wedding anniversaries or romantic gestures. Let yourself be inspired by the beauty of the Czech garnet, get to know its power and strength…. Today, Granát Turnov is the largest producer of jewelry made with unique Czech garnets., including the Czech garnet. It was created by the unification of smaller private companies of goldsmith tradesmen in 1953. In order to ensure the production of jewellery, Granát Turnov obtained an exclusive license to extract Czech garnets and became the owner of the mines which extract the raw garnet material. The original Czech garnet jewellery, made by the traditional manufacturer Granát, d.u.v. Turnov, is seen as one of the symbols of the Czech Republic. It is not only popular in our country, but sought after by foreign tourists, who take it as an exceptional souvenir.
There’s only one true Czech Garnet...Granát Turnov The cooperative is the owner of the trademark and of origin "Czech Garnet" and "Czech Garnet Jewellery". The Garnet team is registered with the hallmark and guarantees the authenticity of the precious metals and stones used. Each Ceramic Garnet comes with a Certificate of Gems and, together with the G-brand Gemstone, guarantees stone foundations and jewellery. Today's collection features a plethora of classical models that have been expanded over the last few years to modern jewellery design. This combination of Czech garnet and moldavin is very popular and this collection includes men's jewellery, children’s jewellery and also symbolic jewellery, such as crosses, hearts, stars, moon signs, letters and animals. We also offer a collection of ladies silver watches, gift items, glass and jewellery, all made from Czech garnet.

christmas Here in Prague, tradition runs deep. It’s part of what makes the city so special at this time of year. There’s the stunning Christmas tree in Old Town Square, which is shipped from northern mountains and lit with thousands of twinkling lights in a ceremony each year. There’s the handmade souvenirs of the holiday markets, like wooden toys, glassware, and embroidered lace, which recall decades worth of Czech history. Even the Czech traditional Christmas dinner—fried carp—dates back to the 18th century, when it represented the only meal cheap enough for the entire country to eat. Really, there’s no better time to get your fill of Czech tradition than during the holidays, and in this month’s issue, we’re doing just that. Those age-old

customs range from feasting on carp to fasting in the hopes of seeing a vision of the lucky golden pig (zlaté prasátko)—and don’t worry, by the end of this issue, we’ll explain them all. Prague’s world-famous Christmas markets are a wintry marvel every visitor should see, and we’ve put together a guide to all the hits, from Old Town Square and its 31-meter Christmas tree to the nearby smoked meat stalls at Náměstí Republiky. The Czech phrase for Christmas Eve, Štědrý den, translates to “Generous Day,” making December also the month of giving back. It’s not hard to do in a place like Prague, where dozens of local creatives are crafting quality goods, all part of this month’s gift guide. But Prague wouldn’t be the revolution-born city it
is without people willing to push the boundaries of tradition. It’s fitting that New Year’s comes so soon after Christmas—as much as the holidays are a time of appreciating the traditions we’ve built, it’s also a time to look ahead to the history we want to make ourselves. Going into the new year, you can find us wandering the stalls at the Christmas markets, sipping svařák, and frying our carp, and we hope you’ll join us. Be sure and check out the businesses that advertise in our magazine... The Prague Visitor is proud to say that we only allow advertisers with a TripAdvisor rating of 4.5 or above - and businesses we feel like most locals would recommend. So, Enjoy! Wishing you all the best in 2018 and beyond!

THINGS OUR TOP PICKS OF THINGS TO DO this month
Christmas Markets all month
It seems like a no-brainer, but Prague during Christmas in magical. Be sure and check out the Christmas markets throughout town, which are always voted as the top Christmas markets in the world. We've put a handy guide in the magazine showcasing the top markets in Prague, and a few of the smaller markets are noted on the map in the middle of the magazine as well. It's free to roam around the markets, and prices to take part in the festivites - like mulled wine, are generally inexpensive. Where: Various Locations
CIRCUS PROBLEM Tuesday, December 19 When we first heard about Circus Problem, our friend told us "you have to hear Balkan Disco," and we were perplexed. What the hell is that? High energy, loud and what we can only compare to ska, Circus Problem shows are every bit as much fun as you should legally be allowed to have. And the music? Well... think fastpaced sometimes ska-like sometimes Star Wars Cantina-like music. Absolutely worth seeing.

Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake was composed in 1875 as a commission by Vladimir Petrovich Begichev, the intendant of the Russian Imperial Theatres in Moscow. Like The Nutcracker, Swan Lake was unsuccessful after its first year of performance. Conductors, dancers and audiences alike thought Tchaikovsky's music was too complicated and hard to dance to. The production’s original choreography by German ballet master, Julius Reisinger, was uninspiring and unoriginal. It wasn’t until after Tchaikovsky’s death that Swan Lake was revived. Much of the Swan Lake we know of today was a revision by the famous choreographers Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov in 189 Where: Hybernia Theatre Náměstí Republiky 4, Praha 1 - Nové Město

ICE SKATING IN OLD TOWN
Cimrman English Theatre's newest play of the translated works of fictional famed Czech Jara Cimrman (yeah, it's hard to explain). Often called "The Czech version of Monty Python", Cimrman plays combine sharp wit and intellectual humour with the occassional slapstick gag and nosedive into the absurd. Trust us, see this play if it's not sold out. But don't go for the singing.
Ice skating in front of Estate Theater (where Don Giovani was first performed) makes for a terrific experience. It's free if you have your own skates, but if you forgot to pack them, the cost to rent them is just 50czk per hour. Lots of shopping is also nearby if you need to break away while the rest of the family glides on the ice.

[ THE PERFECT DAY ]
Jan Thompson OBE British ambassador to the Czech Republic
Her Majesty’s Ambassador Jan Thompson OBE has not only called the British Embassy her office for the past four years, but it’s also been her home – with the historical and beautiful Ambassador’s residence located within the grounds. But make no mistake, Her Excellency has fully embraced her time in Czechia with adventures beyond the Embassy, frequently acting in English language theatre productions in Prague, hitting the open road in her 1968 Skoda, or simply exploring Prague’s treasures by foot. We asked her what she might do on her perfect day in Prague. What would be the first thing you would do on your perfect day in Prague? The very first thing I would do is get up and feed my two cats, Angel and Maya, who have become somewhat of local celebrities here in Prague, since they attend many of the functions here. I would definitely walk over Charles Bridge whilst it’s still early in order to watch the sunrise. There are no tourists on the bridge if you go early enough and it has an absolutely breath-taking view. Prague has such beauty and doing this is good for the soul. Where to next? If my perfect day was on a Saturday, I would definitely visit the Náplavka Farmer’s Market. I would wander round and buy things like wine from local vendors and perhaps a pastry. I usually bump into people I know here or arrange to meet friends. What would you do after this, around midmorning time?
What about taking in a museum? Perhaps. Although it’s touring at the moment, on my perfect day in Prague I would likely go and see the Mucha's Slav Epic which was at the Veletržní Palace, as it really gives me sense of the place I’m living in.
I might venture to Kavárna Nový Svět, a little hidden café set in the area just behind Prague Castle. It has a picturesque little garden and terrace hidden away. I would probably meet my friend Steve Gove from Prague Fringe there, who first introduced me to the café. They serve really good coffee and delicious homemade pastries.
Where would you go for dinner?
Then in the afternoon?
is excellent as well - I always choose a fish entree.
After the Kavárna, perhaps I would then head out of Prague for a few hours and go mushroom picking. There are different places you can go, but I would go just outside of Kladno. The last time I did this I felt very Czech, as this is one of their popular pastimes. Would you take your 1968 Skoda? And tell us about that car! Yes, certainly I would! I bought the car after seeing a picture of a red one in a magazine. Besides liking the look of it - I thought it epitomised something about the Czech Republic and their culture. Although I couldn’t find one in the same red colour, I bought one from a family who had owned it for years, making me its second owner.
I would have dinner at my favourite restaurant, Podolka. It’s not just because of the food - I have very happy memories that have been made there. The embassy staff threw me a surprise birthday party with all of my friends in attendance, knowing it was one of my favourite places. Of course the food
My day would then end as it started, by walking over the Charles Bridge before returning home to tend to and cuddle my cats.

What would you do in the evening?
Podolka restaurant
It is my perfect day, so I would perform on stage at the Stavovské theatre, where Mozart first performed Don Giovanni. I have performed there before and the way you can look out at everyone and see the lights twinkling in the distance makes it magical. I would play the role of Queen Elizabeth in Shakespeare’s Richard III, a role which I’ve played and loved.
Podolské nábřeží - Přístav 1 www.restauracepodolka.cz/
Perhaps I would cap off the night with drinks at either Hemingway bar, or the Glass Bar atop the Dancing House, where I would get a glass of wine and enjoy the view.

Christmas Market Guide Old Town Square
Wenceslas Square
Through Jan 6, 10:00 to 22:00
Through Jan 1, 10:00 - 22:00
Best for: The picturesque setting It’s no surprise that Old Town Square is home to Prague’s largest and most picturesque Christmas market, complete with a towering, 31-meter-tall Christmas tree, nativity scene and concert stage in addition to its food and gift vendors. The square is a must-visit for holiday shoppers, if not for the photo opportunities alone.
Náměstí Republiky Best for: Laid-back shoppers Through Dec 30, 10:00 to 22:00
For visitors looking to take a break from the craziness of Old Town without losing its magic, Náměstí Republiky is the place. Located within walking distance of Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, Namesti Republiky hosts market stalls on the cobblestoned area in front of the impressive Municipal House and the Palladium shopping center. It’s also one of the best markets for traditional Czech market foods, like barbecued pork and blood sausages.
Prague Castle Best for: Sightseers
Through Jan 6, 9 :00 - 18:00 weekdays and through 19:00 weekends
Last year, the Prague Castle hosted a Christmas market for the first time in history at the courtyard of St. George’s Basilica. The market returns this Christmas as one of the earliest to hit Prague. If you’re pressed for time, the Castle market is the perfect way to hit two mandatory sights in one visit.
Best for: Efficient shopping
Visiting this shopping hub may be the most efficient way to check off your holiday gift list. Here, time-pressed shoppers can bounce from the decked-out market stalls to the dozens of big name shops and department stores that line the square.
Náměstí Míru
Best for: The “local” experience Through Dec 24, 10:00 - 19:00
The romantic, intimate Christmas markets at Náměstí Míru are perhaps the only stands frequented by more Czechs than tourists. These markets prize handmade goods like soaps and lotions, wooden toys, and scarves over touristy gimmicks, and the square’s stunning view of the neoGothic Church of Saint Ludmila only adds to the fairytale atmosphere. These are also the first markets to kick off Christmas season, with a selection of over 60 stalls.
Náplavka Market & Heřmaňák Best for: Winter Farmer's Market
Náplavka: Christmas Farmer’s Market- 2nd, 9th and 16th December New Year’s Eve Market- 30th December -08:00-14:00 Heřmaňák: Christmas Farmer’s Market- 2nd and 16th December New Year’s Eve Market- 30th December- 10:00-15:00
If you're cooking over the holidays, take note - these markets are famous for their straight from the farm produce and goods. The popular summer markets go all out with the traditional winter markets. Live carp is even available for a traditional Czech Christmas. We'd recommend asking your hotel before putting in your room's bathtub. December 2017 | THE PRAGUE VISITOR

Czech Christmas
A VERY
December 5
December 24
December 25
(St. Nicholas Day)
(Christmas Eve)
(Christmas Day/Feast of the Nativity)
Look out for December 5th, a holiday known to English-speakers as St. Nicholas Day. In the U.S., this holiday is celebrated in some families by an elf who puts candy in children’s shoes overnight. In Ireland it is recognized with a mass. The Czechs have a slightly different, and scarier way of celebrating. Widely recognized and practiced across the country, this holiday is completely separate from Christmas, when St. Nick (a.k.a St. Mikuláš) doesn’t even appear. In the evening, children wait for St. Mikuláš to arrive at their front door accompanied by an angel and one, sometimes two, devils. The mythological guests then ask the children how they behaved that year, and unlike the American Santa Claus, the costumed guests (often friends of the children’s parents) know the answer. They may even ask the children to sing or recite poetry. Good children will receive a basket of presents containing candies and fruit. Bad children might receive a lump of coal.
Christmas Eve is the main day for celebration in the Czech Republic and when most families gather together. During the day, families decorate their Christmas tree with glass ornaments or the less expensive straw decorations. After sunset a large dinner is served that often contains fish soup, fried carp and potato salad. Leading up to Christmas, markets often have large tanks full of carp. Families select their carp from a large tank and let the storekeeper do the filleting himself. Unlike many other Germanic and Englishspeaking countries, it's baby Jesus (Ježíšek) who brings Christmas presents for the children. Families eat in a different room than the Christmas tree, and during dinner baby Jesus will magically put gifts under it. As dinner finishes, a bell might ring signalling that the gifts have arrived and children will rush off to open them. In the evening, religious families often go to midnight mass.
Christmas Day is more low-key here. When Czechs think of Christmas, they typically think of December 24th. The day after is still recognized, however, and families will spend it winding down and visiting the side of the family they did not see on Christmas Eve.
Svatý Mikuláš
Štědrý den

December 26 Sv. Štěpán
(Saint Stephen's Day)
Historically, St. Stephen's Day (Sv. Štěpán) was a day when the poor children, students and even teachers would go to people's homes singing Christmas carols. More recent, the tradition of jumping into a cold lake or river has been come popular. If you want to watch (or participate), it normally happens in Prague near the National Theatre.
bathtub carp & GOLDEN PIGS: Czech Christmas Facts For a country with an estimated 75% of the population religiously unaffiliated, the Czech Republic practices a surprising number of religiously-based traditions. Saint Nicholas day doesn’t only strike fear into children hoping to receive baskets of presents. The elaborate costumes and masked strangers walking down the street are enough to strike fear into the hearts of many travellers. Some will fast all day on Christmas Eve in hopes that they will see a vision of the “golden pig” or “zlaté prasátko” before dinner; a goodluck sign for the coming year. The Christmas meal dates back to the 18th century when carp was cheap enough to be a common tradition among all Czechs. It’s not the most delicious meal, but it’s a tradition representing a Czech national unity.
Even today in some of the villages, many Czech families buy a live carp and let it swim in their bathtub for up to a week or so before Christmas in order for it to be as fresh as possible, if not for the wonderment of the kids. Unlike other traditions, the person who brings the presents (baby Jesus) does not have a specific image. Czechs imagine him as a magical, incorporeal being. In the past there have drawing contests for children to imagine what baby Jesus might look like. December 2017 | THE PRAGUE VISITOR

First let people off, before you get on. If someone elderly gets on, give up your seat. It’s not just curtious, it’s expected here. To fit in on the metro and trams wear your headphones. If you don’t have headphones, then play with your phone instead, or read a book or this magazine. If you’ve been drinking, don’t act like an idiot, even with friends.
Public Transport Tips:
Tram and Metro Map Late Night: After midnight, trams switch to “Night Service”, which includes a whole new schedule that can be a bit confusing - especially if you’ve had a few drinks. Our recommendation - call an Uber or Liftago or use a taxi to get to your destination.

THE PRAGUE VISITOR | December 2017
Václavské náměstí 773/4 , Prague, Czech Republic +420 273 130 486 | www.crazydaisy.cz
sevens of josef lada
Exhibit offers peek into world of Czech artist BY HELEN JOHNSON Famous Czech artist Josef Lada is recognized for his tranquil landscape scenes, creative characters and colourful cartoons. Lada’s work is known by and has inspired many, and is now featured in a creative and personal exhibition displayed in the Dancing House Gallery. The ‘Sevens of Josef Lada’ exhibition focuses on three key important years: 1887 (Lada’s birth), 1957 (Lada’s death) and 2017. A group of curators have thoroughly researched and specially selected almost four hundred pieces of Lada’s work which are now featured in this exhibition, and there are even pieces which have never been seen by the public before! One of the curators of this exhibition is Lada’s grandson, also named Josef Lada. He explains that he “put this exhibition together with my family and other curators for over one year”, showing the involvement of Lada’s family in the creation of this exhibition. Spread over four floors of the Dancing House, gallery director Robert Vůjtek explains that there is an incredible amount to see in this exhibition. It displays everything from Lada’s most renowned paintings, to his popular characters such as the Tom Cat and the Water Sprite, to his personal items which hold significant sentimental value for his family. A colourful show-glass, delicately painted for many hours by a group of artists, portrays classic scenes of Lada’s most recognised work, and is an appropriate and impressive introduction to the exhibition. This floor also gives an insight into Lada’s life and the inspiration behind his work, by displaying a model village replicating Lada’s own village in Hrusice. Also displayed on this floor are the bright, vivid costumes designed by Lada and a room dedicated to his personal life, exhibiting his used paintbrushes, watercolours and sentimental items such as his pocket watch and pipe. This exhibition also has a strong interactive element to it, which is particularly shown on the children’s floor. This space ensures children can learn about Lada and his wonderful work, whilst having fun at the same time. It features a colourful wooden car children are able to sit in, a game which when spun shows the process and progression of an animation, and touch screen computers which features a ‘match the squares’ game. This interactive space displays many of Lada’s most eye-popping paintings and humorous sketches, allowing both children and other visitors to be fully immersed in the world of Lada. The third floor featured in this exhibition displays the most famous of Lada’s work. Lada is known for his tranquil landscape scenes and this floor features paintings which progress through the
four seasons of the year. The well-known figure of the ‘Water Sprite’ features in many of these pieces of work, smoking his renowned pipe. The winter season, particularly Christmas, is one of the main focuses of Lada’s seasonal work. A whole section of this floor is dedicated to this aspect of his work, featuring depictions of classic family Christmas scenes and children playing in the snow. A collection of Lada’s most classic paintings are displayed on the final floor of this exhibition, with the first painting exhibited dating back to 1908. Different styles of Lada’s work are shown here, particularly humorous sketches such as ‘Queuing for the Missionary in the Village of Yum Yum’ and ‘Clever Cows’, which illuminate Lada’s vivid imagination. Lada’s iconic ‘Night Watchman’ also features on this floor, along with the colourful illustrations which accompanied Jaroslav Hašek’s novel, The Good Soldier Švejk. Lada’s grandson explains that he “can’t really choose only one favourite piece” of his grandfather’s work, but that he particularly likes the “illustrations of fairytales, the illustrations of Hašek’s The Good Soldier Švejk or his early works”. He believes that “each piece has its own quality”, which reflects the innovative and individual nature of Lada’s work. On his overall impression of the exhibition that he was a part of creating, Lada’s grandson explains that he likes “the placement and gallery
space in Dancing House” as it “fits well there, but most important for me is that it will be liked by the exhibition’s visitors”. The main aim of the exhibition is that it not only educates visitors about Lada, his life and his work, but that it engages and enlightens them, guaranteeing an immersive experience. This aim is certainly achieved through the interactive, colourful and intriguing nature of the ‘Sevens of Josef Lada’ exhibition, and is definitely worth a visit if you would like to gain an insight into the wonderful world of Josef Lada.

Cocktail
of the month Jo's Restaurant and Bar makes a mean hamburger, but it's also one of our favourite spots for a cocktail. Located just next door to St. Nicholas Church at Malostranske Namesti, we often stop in to mingle with Mrs. Raspbee. That's a drink (not a waitress) and it consists of vodka, raspberry liquor, raspberry syrup, water, rosemary and lemon juice.

THE PRAGUE VISITOR | December 2017
COCKTAIL GUIDE The best cocktail bars in Prague (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).
Tretter's
V kolkovne 3, Praha 1
www.tretters.cz
The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years. So it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. Number 82 on the map. +420 224 811 165 for Reservations
Parlour Krakovská 15, Praha 1 www.parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. Number 84 on the map. +420 777 200 015 for Reservations. L'Fleur V Kolkovně 920/5, 1, Praha www.lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Muchainspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which your bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list. Number 94 on the map. +420 734 255 665 for Reservations
Anonymous Bar Michalská 12, Praha 1 www.anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile. The bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender your likes and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the secret drink menu printed in UV ink and read with a small blacklight. Reservations are taken only until 9pm. Number 93 on the map. +420 608 280 069 for Reservations. Le Valmont
Uhelný trh 414/9, Praha 1
www.levalmont.cz Le Valmont is a newcomer, just opened in Spring 2016. The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Milos Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Just take note of the strict dress code at Le Valmont—no hats, hoodies, shorts, tank tops or sandals. Reservations are all but required, since the 100-capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly. Number 90 on the map. +420 224 267 266 for Reservations.
Black Angel's Staroměstské nám. 29, Praha 1 www.blackangels.cz Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Old Town astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. With high cellar ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. +420 224 213 807 for Reservations. Bar and Books
Manesova 64, Praha 2
and Týnská 19, Praha 1 Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the more casual in Manisova and slightly more formal in Týnská). The bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings,
and of course books (though mostly for visual aesthetics). Number 85 and 86 on the map.
they do serve amazing hot dogs. Number 89 on the map. No Reservations.
Bonvivant's CTC Bartolomějská 305, P1
Oblaca Žižkov Television Tower, Praha 3
Bonvivant's CTC isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and has a cool 1950’s feel with mid-century wood furnishings, a pressed tin ceiling and a checkered floor. Bartenders are a virtual encyclopedia of drink possibilities and suggestions based on your tastes. +420 775 331 862 for Reservations.
Bugsy's
Pařížská 1068/10, Praha 1 www.bugsysbar.cz Bugsy’s is another bar with a great history, popping up just after the Velvet Revolution. Their one constant has been their attention to detail and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands in stock, as well as over 90 single malt whiskeys and 100 types of rum. Number 95 on the map. +420 224 810 287 For Reservations.
Hemingway's
Karolíny Světlé 26, Praha 1 www.hemingwaybar.cz Chances are, if you’ve asked around, you’ve already been recommended to Hemingway’s Bar. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. So reservations are recommended. Number 97 on the map. +420 773 974 764 for Reservations.
Cash Only Bar Liliova 3, Prague 1 www.cashonlybar.cz Just around the corner from its older sibling Hemingway’s, this little gem is making its own name with cocktails like Pin-Up Martini, made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne. It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and, you guessed it—the bar doesn’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way,
www.oblaca.cz
High atop the Žižkov Television Tower, Oblaca is making better cocktails through science. Oblaca’s Aleš J. Števlík, genius mixologist gone mad scientist (maybe that explains the drink served in a test tube). 92 on the map. + 420 210 320 086 for Reservations.
La Bodeguita del Medio Kaprova 19/5, Praha 1
www.labodeguitadelmedio.cz With it's colonial-style interior straight from Old Havana, La Bodeguita is on point. In addition to great food, bar staff have perfected their craft with regional drinks, from the Cuba Libre to the Mojito. There's a live Cuban band several nights of the week and an amazing cigar selection as well (La Bodeguita was one of the first cigar bars in Prague). . Number 97 on the map. +420 224 813 922 for Reservations.
Alchemist Bar Provaznická 1, Praha 1
www.thealchemistbar.cz A relative newcomer on the scene, Achemist is turning out quality prohibition style drinks in their ornate classicly decorated location at the bottom of Wenclases Square. Number 98 on the map. +420 251 510 940 for Reservations.
Crazy Daisy Václavské nám. 4, Praha 1
www.crazydaisy.cz Somewhat hidden at the bottom of Wenceslas Square, this one of our favourite new hotspots. First republic style interior, bar staff dressed the part and videomapping on the walls that pushes reality - it feels like you're in The Great Gatsby. Oh, and the drinks - amazing! Number 99 on the map. +420 273 130 486 for Reservations.
CLUB GUIDE Roxy Dlouhá 33, Prague 1
The Roxy is one of Prague’s oldest and bestknown clubs. The venue was a popular theatre and ballroom in the 1920’s, but now you’ll find drum and bass, house, techno, and other modern styles on the dancefloor. When the club isn’t hosting a live DJ, it’s the spot for concerts and music festivals.
Lucerna
Vodičkova 36
One of the largest and most popular music clubs in Prague, Lucerna is known for its weekly concerts and events. But it’s maybe most popular on Friday and Saturday nights, when the club’s huge projection screens come alive with 80’s and 90’s music videos. Partygoers of every age and all walks of life can be seen here, getting down to oldie hits from Blondie to Nirvana. Number 66 on the map.
Cross Club
Plynární 23, Prague 7 www.crossclub.cz
Cross Club is a labyrinth of small bars and dancefloors pumping music from dubstep and techno to reggae. The club’s psychedelic, industrial décor is a sight to see in itself—every piece of the building, from the walls to the ceiling, is constructed to move and pulsate with the music. It’s one of the most unique experiences you’ll have with nightlife in Praha, but you might want to grab an Uber. Cross Club is a bit out of the city’s center, but worth the trek. Number 67 on the map.
Meet Factory
Ke Sklárně 3213/15 www.meetfactory.cz
This music club, art gallery, theater and cinema is the brainchild of David Černý, the artist responsible for some of Prague’s most famous (and controversial) modern art. A refurbished warehouse stuffed between a motorway and railroad tracks in Smíchov, Meet Factory transforms
by night into a hip bar and music venue, where you’ll find local singers and international tours alike. Number 68 on the map.
M1 Lounge Masná 1, Prague 1 www.m1lounge.com
M1 Lounge is a favorite of locals, expats and even passing-through celebrities, and it’s not hard to see why. The club’s well-known team of skilled DJs keep the place pumping with a mixture of R&B, hip-hop, electro and dance music until the wee hours of morning, and the upscale, luxurious atmosphere makes every night feel like a celebration. Number 69 on the map.
James Dean V kolkovně 922/1 www.jamesdean.cz/
Okay, we admit that this one’s kind of kitschy— but only in the best way. Named for the iconic rebel and actor, the bar has a classic 1950’s American diner feel turned nightclub late night. Number 70 on the map.
NEONE
Bubenská 1 www.lunchmeat.cz/
Neone got its start as a pop-up party, but it’s since grown into a well-established and respected club in Prague’s electronic music scene known for their superior sound system and live gigs. Electronic music fans, this is the spot where the latest trends in the industry meet innovative artists and dedicated fans. Number 72 on the map.
Radost FX radostfx.cz
Bělehradská 120, Prague 2
First opened in the early ‘90s just a few years after the Velvet Revolution, Radost FX is open Thursday to Saturday and offers the best of house, R&B and hip hop music—Rihanna even
filmed one of her music videos there. Above the club is the venue’s restaurant and cafe, wellknown as one of the best brunch spots in all of Prague. Number 73 on the map.
Retro
Francouzská 75/4, Prague 2 www.retropraha.cz
One for the curious bored or brave. Retro has become the Czech home of hard house. Their club nights are full to the rafters until the small hours while go-go dancers whip the energetic clubbers into a house driven frenzy. A very friendly atmosphere with smiling faces and sweating brows as far as the eye can see, there are more locals and fewer tourists here than some of the other large clubs with amazing DJ’s, lasers, and vibes. Dress code is free and easy, flamboyant if you’re feeling daring. Number 75 on the map.
Chapeau Rouge
Jakubska 2, Old Town www.chapeaurouge.cz
Chapeau Rouge is a music clubs that ranks among the biggest in Prague with 3 floors, 4 bars & 3 stages. Chapeau truly has something for everyone! You may even stumble upon it all on your own: it’s in the center right behind Old Town Square The ground floor of Chapeau is a chill place to meet people from all over the world: travelers and expats alike. Number 77 on the map.
U Sudů
Vodičkova 10, Prague 1 www.usudu.cz
U Sudu is the best of both worlds with a wine bar upstairs and an underground, cave-like labyrinth downstairs. When you walk in, don’t stop on the top level. All that is up here is a normal looking bar. Keep walking until you hit the stairs that descend into one of the coolest
places to drink on Earth... It is indeed smoky, but get past that and the place is just mythic. Number 78 on the map.
Harley's
Dlouhá 18, 110 00 , Prague 1
Harleys is described as the coolest hell on earth. This American-style biker bar opens late and is always rockin’ and rollin’ with live DJs and music acts. It’s also in a perfect location, just a twominute walk from Old Town Square. Number 79 on the map.
La Loca
Odborů 278/4, Prague 2
Chic, fashionable and a whole lotta fun! One of the very first smoke-free establishments in Prague entertains the crowds all day every day. The night is the time when true party colours of La Loca show. International vibes mixed with a scrumptious selection of sizzling drinks are a guarantee of a big night-out. Add a carefully selected music program - karaoke, 80s & 90s retro parties, DJ performances, live concerts and rooftop gatherings in the summer - and you can rest assured knowing you'll very likely to create memories to remember for a lifetime.
Café 80's 8)
You can't go wrong with 80's music. Whether you're nostaligic or just appreciative of all things "totally awesome", the two-story venue does features an 80's themed café restaurant on the first floor. But, the real story here is the basement. A nicely sized music club with an illuminated dance floor, plus a large bar and VIP lounge make it a night worthy of the MTV generation. Number 80 on the map.

REAL CZECH GIFT IDEAS Perfect for Christmas
Tomáš Princ has compiled Human of Prague into a nice big thick coffee table book (there are English and Czech versions available) and it's only 790 Kč. You can find it at the bookstore Neoluxor in Palladium and on Wenceslas Square
If you're looking for a gift for the photographer in your life, check out Analogue near Malostranske Namesti. Our favourite has to the Dirkoma A01pinhole camera (made in Czech), but they also have a lot great Polaroids and Lomography. Analogue Vlašská 10, Praha 1
Chances are, you've considered getting Czech Granat as a gift for a loved one as a Czech local gift. Our advice - make sure it's authentic. True Czech Granat are small stones - where there are imposters who cut down larger stones. Be sure and look for the Granát Turnov certification (who hold the trademark). You can also find their locations on our map.
Since 1991, Manufaktura has been bringing great locally handcrafted products to their local shops. Our favourite Manufaktura item has to be the beer cosmetics line which taps into the regenerative properties of beer. Manufaktura has several shops across Prague which you'll find marked on our map. Gifts should tell a story – that’s what the staff at Local Artists think. Together, they have curated a collection of thoughtful gift boxes which contain a variety of Czech goods. Boxes range in price and in style, with everything from the Sweet Abundance box (try the Czech honey!) to the Child’s box (with Czech toys), or the romantic Couple’s Box. The First Republic celebrated at Galerie La Femme
This creative exhibition not only displays talented artists, but it showcases an important part of Czech history in a way that is both visually engaging and accessible to the public.
By helen Johnson On the 21st November 2017, Galerie La Femme launched their ‘First Republic’ exhibition, which focuses on an iconic period of Czech history. This exhibition is part of the ‘Homework’ project, which the gallery runs every year. This annual project comprises of more than sixty of the best Czech artists, many of whom are established academics, who are given the task of creating a piece of artwork from a chosen theme. Miroslav Lipina, the owner of Galerie La Femme and the curator of the ‘First Republic’ exhibition, created the ‘Homework’ project back in 2003. This project launched with its first topic ‘A Homage to One Photograph’, and since then has returned each year. The ‘Homework’ project not only showcases infamous Czech artists such as Boris Jirků, Miroslav Jiránek and Karel Sládek, but new and upcoming talented young artists of the next generation. This year’s exhibition is in collaboration with Hollar, an association of Czech graphic artists, founded in 1917. Hollar have joined together with Galerie La Femme to celebrate both their centenary and the anniversary of the First Republic. Many of its members are artists in this exhibition, including its leader Pavel Piekar, and others such as František Hodonský and Jiří Anderle.
This year’s theme for the project, ‘First Republic’, celebrates the period of 1918-1939, which includes the presidency of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk from 1918-1935. Masaryk was the founder and first President of Czechoslovakia and is seen by many as one of the most popular Czech Presidents. The period of 1918-1939 is known as one of Czechoslovakia’s most prosperous periods to date, as the country’s economic and industrial situation was booming. This exhibition celebrates this period and not only pays homage to Masaryk, but to several other important and iconic people of this time. The ‘First Republic’ exhibition commemorates multiple infamous actors, including Jan Werich and Adina Mandlová, painters such as Emil Filla and Josef Váchal, and writers such as Karel Čapek, who was also widely known for his humanistic fight against communism. Portraits of many of these iconic Czech figures are featured in this exhibition along with other unique, vivid and colourful paintings. Many of these incorporate the colours of the Czech flag in an intriguing and visually appealing way, in order to break down and relate the narrative of the First Republic. Not only does this exhibition, and the Homework project itself, encourage artists to create
something new and focused with a united theme, but it creates varied and diverse artwork for the gallery to then sell to the public. Famous Czech musican Vladimír Merta was also inspired by the nature of this exhibition and composed a song especially for it, which he performed at the opening in November. This nationalistic exhibition will be featured in the gallery until mid January 2018 and will then move around the Czech Republic before going abroad in Autumn 2018, where the Czech Centre in Munich will be one of the places this exhibition is featured. This creative exhibition not only displays talented artists, but it showcases an important part of Czech history in a way that is both visually engaging and accessible to the public. „I have always been very competitive. Since I was a child, the biggest pain I felt was when I lost. It could be anything. Any competition, be it athletics or table tennis – every time I lost, my heart ached. These were really days of sorrow. I don’t even know from where it was coming from but I was really taking it as my personal failure, as the end of the world. I was totally convicted that the most important thing of all is to achieve what I want. To win at all costs. I played tennis for a while and then american football for several years. I remember that once we lost in semi-finals of a junior league. The game was tight till the last moments, I had my greatest friends around me, we gave it all we had but it wasn’t enough. And this thought alone that started to appear in my head – ‚it wasn’t enough!‘ – was very painful to me. I didn’t realize that there were also other things – health, family, experiencing things with my friends, even having friends at all. I had a tunnel vision, sport was the only thing I was aware of. But now I see that I was not even doing it for the joy of it but only because of the constant hunger for a feeling of being better than others, for the victory. This was my life for long years. I used to go to trainings five times a week and five times a week I went to a gym. We were all guys in the team, all of us wanted to be strong, wanted to look good, wanted 42
to impress girls. By having muscles we wanted to give the impression of being more tough than we were inside – in fact quite sensitive, smart and nice boys. But the obsession with muscles, with looking better than the other guy in the changing room, with lifting more weigh on the bench-press than him, was heavily present. That was the collective mindset – to be big, to be strong. That was our first life priority. There was a very friendly vibe between us but the smaller and weaker ones were constantly getting a feedback that they should work harder: ‚Step it up, man!’“ „I didn’t realize how much I clung to it until I lost it. I was obsessed. Any notion of not being perfect, of not being the best, of experiencing a failure, was so strong and painful for me that it all started to happen. Because I think that the things we fear the most often really happen. And so I started to have all kinds of injuries. We got into a play-off and my hamstring got torn. Americal football is all about sprints, about rapidity. So when you injure yourself in such a way, you’re out of the game. When the doctor told me that I won’t be able to play for three months, I was in tears. I felt anxious. My head wanted it but it was simply not possible. Now I think that such moments make us wiser – when you want something but it’s some other way

and you have to adapt. But back then I refused to accept it for a long time. When I had both my left and right hamstring torn for the third time, I had no other option. It took a while but I understood that the key to my happiness lies within me. I realized that I shouldn’t go against the current my whole life, to keep wanting something. And also that I had to accept the reality as it was. I quit doing sport, later I started to do yoga, to meditate, to eat healthier, to sleep more. But my ego was very fixed on the way I looked so the change was hard at first. I lost ten kilos in the first three months. When some of the guys met me back then, they asked: ‚Dude, what’s going on? Are you sick?‘ I saw the pitying looks and it was very hard for me to justify in my own eyes the thought that I had decided to follow. The thought that I wanted to focus more on my mind, on my approach. So that I wouldn’t try finding happiness in having muscles, in catching more balls, in winning a game anymore. Because even if you do, when you look back at it after some years, you see that it cost you so much. That by winning the one stupid game you lost much more than you gained. Because the competition you were so eager to win back then is just an insignificant part of your life.“
