Happy New Year! Hello and Happy 2020! It seems like last year (and the decade for that matter) flew by. You've picked a great time to visit Prague. With the Christmas rush out of the way, there are fewer tourists packed into the city, which is great if you're looking to really take in Prague. This month we take a whimsical look at blending in while you're here. From attire and mannerisms to chatting with Czechs in the bar, we've got you covered. We also visit two restaurants. One is perfect if you're a carnivore, and one has just started catering to vegetarians. Meat Eater only has 22 seats, but owner and grill master chef Daniele Govoni has created a utopia for meat lovers in their new Old Town location. Across the river, famed hamburger restaurant Bejzment announces they've gone green. And that means that every delicious burger on their menu is now available with a vegetarian option. And last, the new year means New Year's Resolutions. The number one resolution usually is to be more healthy. This month we make an argument that our beloved national drink, beer, is a very healthy option. Just go with us on that.

PRO TIP:
We suggest using your feet to get around Prague. When necessary, use our amazing and inexpensive transit system. But, If you feel the need to try a scooter or bikesharing, here’s our very biased opinion and the basics of your options...
Just Say No...
Analog and Cool
Electric push scooters just aren’t cool, unless you’re a six year old. They’re also not efficient or much fun on cobblestone streets, which leads many riders to end up where they’re not supposed to be - on the sidewalk. Then people really hate you. We avoid.
Rekola bikes aren’t electric powered, but we love them for two reasons. 1) It’s a Local company and 2) the baskets on the front are really handy for carrying stuff. They’re also the least expensive of the three.

Many travelers these days want a local experience when visiting a new place. And while your lack of the language can be a dead giveaway, these tips can help you blend into the crowd without having to open your mouth.
How to look like a Local
Get a
Dog
Czechs have one of the highest dog-ownership rates in all of Europe, and we're not talking about wild street dogs. Czech canines are well trained and obedient. You're likely to find them in most parks, on trams and trains, and even in offices or restaurants. In fact, many servers are more likely to offer your dog a free bowl of water than a free glass to their customers.
Carry a Backpack While Americans, for example, may associate backpacks (or "rucksacks" for our British friends) with schoolchildren, they are practically part of a Czech uniform. You could attribute this accessory to a love of camping and outdoor activities, which is often true, but a backpack is equally likely to be used to simply carry groceries home from the supermarket.
Thumbs Up Watch your fingers if you want to indicate how many of something you'd like to order. Czechs count with their thumbs first, using their thumb and first finger for two, thumb and two fingers for three, etc. So yes, that scene in the film Inglourious Basterds, when an American spy is found out by raising his first two fingers to order two whiskeys, is 100% accurate.
active where? If you see a cyclist pass you on the street in a helmet and matching logo-covered spandex, don't assume they're training for a professional race. They may just be on their way home from work. Czechs often dress head-to-toe for whatever activity they are participating in at the moment. Every hiker's closet will have boots, hiking trousers, waterproof jackets, and all of the outdoor gear that could possibly come in handy in the forest (in a backpack, of course). This trend extends to more formal situations as well, meaning that you'll often find symphony, theater, and ballet audiences dressed in jackets and ties or dresses and heels.
USA SMILE
CZECH SMILE
Tone Down Your Smile One way to spot the foreigner among Czechs in any photo is a big toothy grin. The Czech smile is often a slight upturn of closed lips. The average resting face may even appear upset at first glance, but this is just because smiles are reserved for sincere interactions. And don't be put off by a downturned frown with what could be mistaken for a disapproving "hmmph" when speaking with locals. This is just the sound of active listening among Czechs.

Making Bar Talk
Having a chat with a Czech? If you can somehow make it past the first minor hurdle of not speaking Czech, here's a cheatsheet to chat about Politics and Sports for at least three minutes.
Talk Politics
Czechs love talking politics. Let's face it, this is the country that invented defenestation (the act of throwing a leader out of the window).
Miloš Zeman
Andrej Babiš
Václav Havel
The third and current President of the Czech Republic. Zeman has a reputation for heavy drinking and somewhat controversial views on things like immigration policies.
The Prime Minister (and former CEO and sole owner of the largest agriculture company). He’s also the second wealthiest man in the Czech Republic. He’s drawn comparisons by many to being Czech’s Donald Trump. Sad.
Czech writer, philosopher, political dissident, and politician who served as the 1st President of the Czech Republic from 1993 to 2003. He passed away in 2011, but Czechs adore Havel, even many who didnt always agree with him.
Talk Sports
Nothing brings people together like sitting and watching and talking sports. Here's a run down of the two big football clubs in Prague, plus the most popular Czech hockey player (who plays for the NHL).
Choose one s of these team to support!
10
Jaromír Jágr
AC Sparta Prague
SK Slavia
Czech professional ice hockey right winger who played for the NHL Florida Panthers before returning to the Czech Republic to buy a team in Kladno. He's an Ice God to Czechs. The guy is 45+ and still a master on the ice. Talk about him like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods or McGregor.
AC Sparta Prague is a Czech football club based in Prague. It is the most successful club in the Czech Republic and one of the most successful in Central Europe. They play at Generali Arena, also known as Letná Stadium.
Founded in 1892, SK Slavia are the second most successful club in the Czech Republic since its independence in 1993. The team plays at Eden Arena.
THE PRAGUE VISITOR | JAnuAry 2020
Certain behaviors scream, "I'm a tourist!" at first glance. While that's not the worst thing in the world, just be aware that these are some of the fastest ways to draw attention to yourself in the Czech capital.
How to look out of place
Be seen riding one of these.
Most locals hate the green push scooters. Not only do they end up parked on pedestrian paths, tourists often think it's actually okay to ride them down the sidewalks (which is actually illegal). And really, riding them on the cobblestones can't be great.
Instagram Your Ice-Cream Filled Trdelník These doughy spiral treats dusted in cinnamon, sugar, and nuts are often advertised as "Bohemian" and "traditional" but are actually neither. You're not likely to find them anywhere outside of tourist centers or Christmas and Easter markets. The addition of ice cream and Nutella is even more recent, making them a prime subject for #foodporn photos. Just be sure to leave #traditional or #Czech out of your tags.
Posing for wedding photos You're very likely to see couples in large white wedding dresses and tuxedos around town, taking pictures in front of Prague's skyline and historical monuments. But don't mistake this for a local trend. It's actually the Chinese phenomenon of pre-wedding photos, popularized by celebrities and combined with a romantic Chinese movie (filmed in Prague) called Somewhere Only We Know, that fills the city with smiling brides and grooms.
Wear Matching Outfits This trend could be as innocent as a sea of similar hats bought by a tour group at their previous destination. Bolder examples involve groups of bright pink boas and a tiara for bachelorette parties (or "hen dos"), or the ridiculous costumes of British stag parties, ranging personalized T-shirts to grown men in diapers or cow costumes. Nothing says, "I'm not from around here" like a couple or group who are dressed alike. By Jiří Mocek, Havel to the Castle, 2019, oil on canvas. Meat Eater
Award-winning grillmaster Daniele Govoni's new restaurant is the new destination for meat lovers
By Nicole Ely At the time of this interview, the employees of Meat Eater Steak & Wine were busy getting ready for opening. The staff were still in the process of training. The menu was being finetuned. The restaurant’s last final touches were being installed. “Rome wasn’t built in a day is the motto,” says David Cerny, the man working behind the scenes. He had been spending 12-hour days at the new restaurant making sure every detail is just right. Meat Eater is hoping to become a capital for Prague’s carnivores. Located in Old Town, this small but elegant establishment serves high-quality meat and wine to patrons looking for a fine dining, meat-filled experience. The concept comes from the mind of European barbecue master and food expert Daniele Govoni. “Our customers’ experience needs to be unique,” Govoni says. “We study the temperature and timing to be sure that every client will have a new sensation with each bite.” Govoni is internationally known for his barbecue skills. In October he participated in the Steak Cookoff Word Championship in Texas, and has earned the title of Grand Champion for the Czech Republic in 2015 and Reserve Grand Champion in 2019. He has also served as a judge for the Kansas City Barbecue Society. Although Govoni comes from a family with a long cooking tradition, he actually started his career as an architect. Originally from Bologna, the Italian journeyed to the Czech Republic years ago and decided to pursue his passion for barbecue instead. He taught himself to grill and eventually his talents were noticed. The idea for a place like Meat Eater first came to Govoni more than two years ago. Located on the narrow Vejvodova street, the steakhouse is a quiet spot just around the corner from the bustle of Old Town. Thanks to Govoni’s connections, they are able to provide some of the finest and
rarest meats you can find in the Czech Republic. While they do serve one vegetarian dish, the focus is of course on the beef. And the choice is excellent. They offer cuts of a variety of breeds, and even have wagyu from the United States, Australia and Japan. Their wine selection is also top-notch with mostly red Italian wines, perfect to pair with a juicy steak. Govoni employs two chefs with previous experience in Michelin restaurants to carry out the menu. Using ceramic grills, the steaks are cooked to pink perfection as they don’t allow for overcooking. Each steak also comes with a small dollop of mashed potatoes. If patrons decide to forgo a steak, the menu features a good selection of starters and a few non-steak entrees. You can try their buttery foie gras
with pistachios and apples. Their beef tartare shouldn’t be missed with hand cut, not ground, meat from the Italian Marchigiana breed. The Meat Eater pie with beef ragu, demi-glace and vegetables was also a standout. Govoni, Cerny, the chefs and everyone else work extremely efficiently despite the restaurant’s small size. At about 70 square meters, including the kitchen, every nook and cranny is utilized without making the space feel cramped. A window into the kitchen allows diners to get a glimpse of the culinary artistry while still enjoying a calm, intimate meal. Although located in the tourist quarter, Govoni would like to build a good following among locals. The dining room sits 22 people total, and so reservations are recommended and can only be made up to 14 hours in advance. This will help make sure that
expats and Czechs who live in Prague still get the opportunity to eat there. Meat Eater has the potential to become a destination steakhouse for Prague’s vibrant food scene, and Govoni’s ambitions don’t stop there. After they get the Czech location running smoothly, he plans to open several restaurants in several major European cities, including Monte Carlo, London and Brussels. Until then, Govoni and the crew are focusing on giving the meat lovers of Prague something tender and delicious to sink their teeth into. Looking back on the opening of Meat Eater, he feels like he’s leaving a dream. “At night I think about every moment of seeing the dream come true.” Meat Eater Vejvodova 8, Prague 1 meateater.cz

How Healthy is Beer? It's 2020, and that means New Year's Resolutions. Doing something different for the new year. It's a fact that that the number one resolution seems to be getting healthy. But what about beer? Maybe there’s a reason the Czech phrase for “cheers”—na zdraví—translates roughly to “here’s to your health.” As much as we blame
Beer can help lower bad cholesterol and aid digestion
Beer may prevent kidney stones
A 30 cl glass of beer—and especially dark beer— contains up to one gram of soluble fibre. While this may not seem like a lot, soluble fibre both aids digestion and lowers levels of LDL cholesterol (AKA “bad” cholesterol), and just two glasses of beer can provide 10 percent of your daily recommended fibre intake. Wine, on the other hand, doesn’t contain any soluble fibre at all.
Beer is chock-full of vitamins and minerals
Beer has been long-known for its high levels of vitamin B, including vitamins B1, B2, B6 and B12. But it also contains high levels of potassium, calcium, and phosphorus, which help promote a healthy diet.
Beer may protect the brain against Alzheimer’s.
This is not a drill. Though it may not help you remember what you did last night, beer may protect against degenerative disorders, like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, according to a 2015 study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. This is thanks to xanthohumol, a compound in hops used to flavor beer.
Beer can help build strong bones.
The high levels of dietary silicon in beer can help raise bone density. So don’t feel too bad next time you skip the gym and head to Pivo Karlín for a brew (or three) instead.
Ever found yourself sprinting to the WC after a couple of beers? The good news is, the diuretic effects of beer may actually help prevent kidney stones. Drinking one 12-ounce serving of beer per day can reduce your risk of getting a kidney stone by 41 percent, according to a 2013 study in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
Beer can be an effective sleep aid
Odds are, you’ve already experienced with this one. But what you probably didn’t know is that beer contains lactoflavin and nicotinic acid, both of which promote sleep.
Beer supports a healthy heart
Numerous studies have found that those who drink a little over a pint of beer per day have a reduced risk of suffering from heart attacks, stroke and heart disease. Unfortunately, this doesn’t prevent you from catching the feels after one too many glasses.
Beer can be good for your skin and hair
High levels of ferulic acid in beer help protect skin from sun damage, and the many vitamins found in your brew can help reduce acne. The malt in beer nourishes hair and promotes growth, while yeast strengthens and volumizes. There’s a reason Prague’s Hotel Vinohradský Dům is home to a beer spa, where you can bathe in the stuff in a process known as balneotherapy.

consuming too much alcohol can wreak havoc on your health. But when you’re living in the country with the highest rate of beer consumption in the world, you’ve got to think of some reason to justify it. Here are ours.
alcohol for our problems, there’s actually a wealth of research showing that moderate beer-drinking (keyword: moderate!) can be good for your heart, bones, kidneys, and even your skin and hair. By moderate, we mean one 12-ounce serving per day for women, two per day for men. To be clear, this is no reason to binge drink—

Cocktail guide & wine bar guide
The best cocktail bars in Prague (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It’s always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar). The numbers correspond to the map in the center of the magazine.
Le Valmont 9)
Uhelný trh 9, Prague 1 levalmont.cz
The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Miloš Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Reservations: +420 224 267 266
Schody Home Bar 7^
Zámecké schody 8, Prague 1 Located right on the stairs (schody in Czech) of Prague Castle, it’s hard to find but well worth the search. Once you’re inside, tell the mixologist what flavors you like and he’ll fix up your dream cocktail. Like sister restaurant Parlour, - it’s a cozy hidden secret and they’re trying to keep it that way.
Black Angel’s 8#
Staroměstské náměstí 29, Prague 1 blackangels.cz
Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Old Town astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. With high cellar ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. +420 224 213 807 for Reservations.
Bar and Books 8%
Mánesova 64, Prague 2 and Týnská 19, Prague 1 barandbooks.cz Like its New York counterpart, the bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (mostly for visual aesthetics). Two locations and reservations online.
L’Fleur 9$
V kolkovně 5, Prague 1 lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with the 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Mucha-inspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which the bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list. +420 734 255 665 for Reservations
Parlour 8$
Krakovská 15, Prague 1 parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. Reservations: +420 777 200 015
Crazy Daisy 9(
Václavské náměstí 4, Prague 1 crazydaisy.cz Somewhat hidden at the bottom of Wenceslas Square, this one of our favourite new hotspots. First Republic style interior, bar staff dressed the part and videomapping on the walls that pushes reality - it feels like you’re in The Great Gatsby. Reservations: +420 273 130 486
Bugsy’s 9%
Pařížská 10, Prague 1 bugsysbar.cz
Popping up just after the Velvet Revolution. Their one constant has been attention to detail and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands of champagne and prosecco, as well as over 90 single malt whiskeys and 100 types of rum. +420 224 810 287 for Reservations.
Tretter’s 8@
V kolkovně 3, Prague 1 tretters.cz
The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years, so it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. Soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. +420 224 811 165 for Reservations.
AnonymouS Bar 9# Michalská 12, Prague 1 anonymousbar.cz
It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile, the bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender your likes and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the secret drink menu printed in UV ink and read with a small blacklight. Reservations are taken only until 9pm at +420 608 280 069.
Hemingway Bar 9!
Karolíny Světlé 26, Prague 1 hemingwaybar.cz
AnonymouS Bar's drinks are just as amazing as the presentation.
Chances are, if you’ve asked around, Hemingway’s Bar has already been recommended. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. Reservations are highly recommended. +420 773 974 764 for Reservations.
Cash Only Bar 8( Liliová 3, Prague 1 cashonlybar.cz
Just around the corner from its older sibling Hemingway’s, this little gem is making its own name with cocktails like Pin-Up Martini, made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne. It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and, you guessed it—the bar doesn’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way, they do serve amazing hot dogs.
Green Devil’s Absinth Bar 7(
Týn 7, Prague 1 If you’re looking for an authentic and eclectic experience in absinth tasting, check out the Green Devil’s Absinth Bar in Old Town. The unique atmosphere accentuates the hand-curated products; ranging from quality beverages to absinth-flavored ice cream. This location is a great place to spend an evening and learn about the history and culture of absinth. Reservations: +420 728 326 344
Hoffa
Senovážné nám. 22, Prague 1 One of the first non-smoking bars in Prague, Hoffa Bar has become a hotspot for evening drinks since it opened in 2013. Situated just
off of Wencesles Square, Hoffa Bar regularly hosts DJ’s and live music of all genres along with monthly events listed on their calendar. Their menu boasts a wide selection of wines from all over Europe as well as cocktails, some homemade recipes as well as classics.
La Bodeguita del Medio 8)
Kaprova 5, Prague 1 labodeguitadelmedio.cz With it’s colonial-style interior straight from Old Havana, La Bodeguita is on point. In addition to great food, bar staff have perfected their craft with regional drinks, from the Cuba Libre to the Mojito. Located underneath Cohiba Atmosphere. +420 224 813 922 for Reservations
Cohiba Atmosphere 8! Kaprova 5, Prague 1 cohibaatmosphere.cz
Referred to as the Havana of Prague, this cigar club is more than just premium cigars. Refined cocktails, and fine wine quality spirits are all served in this classy setting. The sleek design of the bar, combined with the top-notch service of the bartenders makes this the perfect spot for a quality drink. +420 224 818 373 for Reservations.
Vinograf 8(
Senovážné náměstí 23, Prague 1 Míšeňská 8, Prague 1 vinograf.cz There are two convenient locations of one of our favorite wine bars one off of Wenceslas Square and one just under Charles Bridge, each with their own distinct personality, but both cozy and comfortable with a reliable selection of good wines. +420 214 214 681 for Reservations.
Na břehu Rhôny 4$ Na Hrobci 1, Prague 2 nabrehurhony.cz
Na břehu Rhôny is one of our favorite wine destinations. Pour your own French wines and keep track on a notepad. Delicious food platters are also available and the service is friendly and quick. +420 733 785 377
U Staré studny 2& Tržiště 3, Prague 1 ustarestudny.cz
Step into the luxurious wine bar and find every kind of unique wine, cognac, or champagne to sample with a tasting flight. They offer daily wine tastings, with at least six premium Czech wines to sample by the glass each day.
VELTLIN 4%
Křižíkova 115, Prague 8 veltlin.cz
Our go-to when in the Karlín area, Veltlin offers a variety of Czech, Moravian, and Central European wines. The staff are great and the owner, Bogdan, is an awardwinning Wine Guru (who is down to earth and friendly even with nonguru wine fans).
Vinotéka U Mouřenína 1( Tržiště 17, Prague 1
vinotekaumourenina.cz
Cozy wine bar and shop with an excellent selection of wines at great prices for Malá Strana. You can also enjoy cheese and bread plates with your glasses of wine, perfect for a cozy evening with a friend or significant other.

Bejzment goes green
Vegetarians Get a Taste of the ‘Nasty’ By Nicole Ely If you were wandering down Lesnicka, you could pass by without noticing Bejzment. At first glance, the nondescript burger joint looks very similar to a lot of the restaurants you see in Prague 5. Inside, the brick interior resembles a college bar you would stumble upon in the United States with license plates, American flags and Jack Daniels posters adorning the walls. Specializing in gourmet burgers, Bejzment is a destination for many meat eaters. Waitresses shuffle through tables wearing black t-shirts decaled with In Beef We Trust. But now, vegetarians have a reason to partake. Since late November, the restaurant has been offering their customers the option to substitute any menu item for a vegetarian alternative. Why? “Because I’m crazy enough to do it,” says owner Zed Střížek. While many Prague restaurants are embracing the vegetarian trend by adding a few non-meat items to their repertoire, none are offering their entire menu. At Bejzment, patrons can order a veggie version of anything, from their burgers to their chicken wings to their hotdogs. Střížek is self-professed a meat lover to his core. The husky burger master sports sleeves of tattoos that blend burger imagery with the works of Salvador Dali and the famous photograph of Rockefeller Center construction workers. He opened Bejzment in 2010 when he noticed a lack of craft burgers on Prague’s food scene, and then he founded Burgerfest in 2012, which quickly grew to be Europe’s largest burger and barbecue festival. Once Střížek saw the growth in demand for vegetarian options at food festivals like Burgerfest, he realized he could offer something more than just the typical soups and salads. If vegetarians had more than just a few starters and one entree, they would come back to try new things. To him, going vegetarian made good business sense. “These days everyone wants to be cool and green,” he says. “So I decided to do everything vegetarian. But not vegan. Vegans are a pain in the ass.” The trick with veggie burgers is getting the texture and taste of the meat substitute just right. To do this, Střížek and his team create all their products in-house as opposed to ordering premade patties. Their recipe consists of around 14 ingredients, including chickpeas, beetroot, yeast and much more. No chemicals are added. “It’s also about getting the veggie stuff to taste
good,” he says. Fortunately, Střížek has a fan of vegetarian food in his daughter, who often taste tests his new recipes. “She’s my guinea pig,” he says. Whenever Střížek is experimenting with new vegetarian recipes, he often finds himself looking at American websites, fitting in with the restaurant’s overall vibe. Before opening Bejzment, he spent several years in Atlanta, Georgia where he learned about traditional southern cuisine and barbecue. He continued this passion when he returned to Prague and got a job as a kitchen manager at Hard Rock Cafe. Not caring for the corporate world, he left Hard Rock after a little over a year and went out on his own. His exploits in the United States planted the seed for his deep love of American culture, shown in Bejzment with Route 66 posters, Mel’s DriveIn ads and other memorabilia from Střížek’s own personal collection. There are 15 different burgers on the menu, and even more barbecue and starters. According to Střížek, every burger has a story. One that might catch your eye is the Porn de Jeremy. Střížek got the idea for the burger when a brand ambassador for Ron Jeremy’s rum visited
the restaurant a while back. Střížek and his baker came up with a, um, suggestively shaped bun and pitched the burger to the adult film star’s people. “We are the only certified burger joint that can use his name,” Střížek says. And yes, you can order a veggie version. Just be warned. It is a lot to put in your mouth. In the future, Střížek plans to introduce more veggie burgers at events like Burgerfest. His ultimate goal is to provide healthier options without sacrificing that mouth-watering taste. “I eat meat and I can eat the veggie burger no problem.” the meat lover says. “I want to give vegetarians the feeling of that dirty, nasty barbecue taste.” Bejzment Lesnická 1155/8, Praha 5-Smíchov 150 00 www.bejzment.cz

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s final stage piece was intended for the common people visiting the Theater an der Wien, where it was premiered on 30 September 1791. The creators drew upon the tradition of the old Viennese magic opera, one of the types of singspiel, a popular genre combining sung and spoken passages in which alongside human characters appeared various supernatural beings and animals and stage machinery effects were employed. Die Zauberflöte has become the best-known example of this genre not only owing to the fairy-tale story in which by means of a magic flute and his comical companion, Papageno, Prince Tamino seeks the way to Princess Pamina, daughter of the Queen of the Night, but also thanks to the references to Masonic symbolism and, naturally, Mozart’s engrossing music. A year after its premiere in Vienna, the singspiel was presented in Prague at today’s Estates Theatre on 25 October 1792. The new production, staged by the renowned Czech director Vladimír Morávek, is a spellbinding spectacle providing a remarkable artistic experience. *Sung in German, Czech and English surtitles.* Magic, Opera, Flute

Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts William Kentridge’s new production of Alban Berg’s expressionistic masterpiece Wozzeck, regarded for its intense emotional power and brilliant score as one of the most significant operas of the 20th century. Composed during and in the aftermath of World War I, Berg’s dark exploration of a soldier besieged by the evils of society, is staged by Kentridge in a ramshackle warren of stairs, ramps, discarded furniture, and debris. His own theatrically animated charcoal drawings, along with other projected drawings, maps, and film clips, evoke a nightmarish world of crashed planes, searchlights, ghostly gas masks, and battlefields. Peter Mattei makes his role debut as Wozzeck opposite Elza van den Heever as Marie, the mother of his child. Singing the roles of Wozzeck’s tormentors are Christopher Ventris as the DrumMajor, Gerhard Siegel as the Captain, and Christian Van Horn as the Doctor. Andrew Staples makes his Met debut as Andres. Kentridge, who previously directed Berg’s Lulu and Shostakovich’s The Nose at the Met, unveiled the new production at the 2017 Salzburg Festival, where it received critical acclaim. Kentridge’s production is a co-production of the Met, Canadian Opera Company, Opera Australia, and Salzburg Festival. Opera

Antonín Dvořák’s two most successful operas, The Devil and Kate , and Rusalka , are based on fairy-tale motifs. Blending folk and humorous with lyrical and fantasy elements is one of the typical (and still very popular) traits of Czech dramatic creation. The theme of this charming fairy-tale opera is taken over from Božena Němcová’s folk tale of the same name about the brazen and fearless Kate, the wily shepherd Jirka and the duped devil Marbuel. Dvořák created a masterly patchwork of contrasting scenes – folksy, breezy, fiendishly fervent and courtly noble. Adolf Born’s exquisite sets and costumes bear the hallmark of this original and popular artist. *The opera is staged in Czech original version and English surtitles are used in the performance.* Czech, Antonín dvořák, Opera, Folk, Devil

A fairy tale for children, a symbolic story for adults. A play about seeking happiness, which may be surprisingly nearby. Blue Bird as the desire for ephemeral, ungraspable happiness. An adventurous voyage towards the soul of the things and beings around us, the seeking itself being the destination – only during this seeking can the two central characters come to comprehend that human relations and compassion are that which can bring us the Blue Bird of Happiness. The best-known text written by the Flemish symbolist Maurice Maeterlinck, a Nobel Prize-winner, is one of the most impressive allegories of global literature, reaching out both to adults and children. The author’s fertile imagination, reviving the world around us, inspires theatre-makers to opulent staging and affords a great spectacle to everyone who likes being enchanted. *Performance with english subtitles.* Happiness, Drama, Desire, Fairy tale

Devendra Banhart is an American singer, guitarist and songwriter. With his music, he represents genres including psych folk, freak folk, psychedelic music or neofolk. In most of his music pieces, he uses the classical guitar as the only instrument. Banhart’s work comes from a combination of Indian, Venezuelan and American pop music of the 1960s. Most of his songs are atmospheric, dark or melancholic compositions, although the album Cripple Crow has been kept in the atmosphere of pop and glam rock. A characteristic feature of Banhart is a careless, “narcotic”, slightly unreal vocal. His debut album The Charles C. Its founders are a drummer and advertising director in one person Luke Cresswell and his friend, also an actor and director, Steve McNicholas. Stomp is a thrilling combination of breathtaking rhythm and dance in a unique show. Members of the ensemble create music using random things that surround us in everyday life - garbage cans, brooms, kitchen sinks, lighters, boxes of matches, cans, chairs ... So you can just briefly describe the unique spectacle offered by each performance. Show, which blurs language barriers and cultural differences and celebrate twenty years of tremendous success worldwide. 890 to 1290 CZK Summer, Dance, Director

Swedish band Sabaton have been a major force in the power metal field since the mid-‘00s, but had to battle through significant difficulties to get there, which may explain their eventual creative obsession with everything war-related. Originally founded in 1999 and comprised of Joakim Brodén, Rickard Sundén, Oskar Montelius, Daniel Myhr, Pär Sundström, and Richard Larsson, the enterprising group quickly produced two demo tapes that were later released in a limited edition as Fist for Fight in 2002. But after inking a deal with Italian label Underground Symphony, Sabaton saw their first wouldbe official album, Metalizer, inexplicably held out of the marketplace for a full two years. Tired of waiting, the members of Sabaton, once again took matters into their own hands, and financed the recording of another album, Primo Victoria, which was officially released in 2005 by the Black Lodge label. It also opened the floodgates for a slew of popular singles and battle metal LPs to follow, including 2006’s Attero Dominatus, 2008’s The Art of War, and 2010’s Coat of Arms, all of them bursting at the seams with historic and mythical chronicles of battle set to anthemic power metal. ~ Eduardo 790 to 1390 CZK Metal
