Cheers, August! As the summer heat continues to roll through Prague, there is much you can do in the wake of the rising temperatures. Doubtless, one of the most exciting things to do in Prague is to visit the myriad of cocktail bars all around the city. Enjoy a classic cocktail like Gin and Tonic as well as creative and out-of-the-box themes and cocktails that will spice up your night life here at Prague. Of course, if you’re not a cocktail kind of person, these bars also offer a wide assortment of straight liquor and beer to satisfy all sorts of taste buds. Whether you want to have a relaxing night with friends or prepare for a late-night adventure, it is always good to have a tasty cocktail in your system. The biggest event this month will be the week-long Prague Pride celebration that will go from August 5th to the 11th. What better way to celebrate Pride than with not only performances and social discussions, but a large parade on Sunday with the Mayor leading the charge. There will also be a concert on the 11th at Letenské Sady, featuring over 25 artists on four separate stages. Electric push scooters just aren’t cool, unless you’re a six year old. They’re also not efficient or much fun on cobblestone streets, which leads many riders to end up where they’re not supposed to be - on the sidewalk. Then people really hate you. We avoid.

Rekola bikes aren’t electric powered, but we love them for two reasons. 1) It’s a Local company and 2) the baskets on the front are really handy for carrying stuff. They’re also the least expensive of the three.

Tove Lo + support: Naaz Tuesday, August 6th, 21:00 Grammy nominated Swedish singersongwriter Tove Lo and Dutch singer Naaz will perform at Lucerna Music bar for an evening of pop and EDM. Crafting music with an 80’s contemporary influence, Tove Lo’s debut album “Queen of the Clouds” reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2014. Naaz, having started her career on YouTube, released her debut album “Bits of Naaz” in 2018 and has achieved mainstream success since then. Prague Pride Parade 2019 Saturday, August 10th, 11:30

Since 2011, Prague Pride has held its annual parade in support of the LGBTQ community. Prague Pride runs August 5 -11 this year. Along with a weeklong full of festivities that include open discussions, social activities, sports events and spiritual encounters, Prague Pride will hold its much anticipated Pride Parade on Sunday to conclude the celebration. Attracting just under 100,000 people last year, Prague Pride 2019 will look to push for the final steps of legalization of gay marriage in the Czech Republic.

COCKTAIL BARS In a city that has such a love affair with beer, sometimes it’s easy to forget about the cocktail. From a traditional Old Fashioned to the latest molecular mixology concoction, Prague has some amazing choices when you’re ready to hit the hard stuff. And best of all, while a nice cocktail can cost upwards of 20€ in New York or London, a majority of drinks found in Prague establishments don’t exceed 200czk.

Here's thirteen of our favourite watering holes, chosen not just for their spirited libations, but also their atmosphere and charm. But before you dive in, it's worth noting that these bars get extremely busy (especially on weekends), so calling ahead and making a reservation is almost a must. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, although it’s fastly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and find the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. When it comes to choices, the good news is you don’t have to worry about finding a menu in English, because there is no menu. Your bartender will ask you what you like and offer suggestions based on your input. The results are never less than spectacular.

This bar also gets high marks from us as well with value for money. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. Imaginative drinks (like cocktails served from tiny gasoline canisters and perfume bottles) and personal friendly service are two of the benchmarks that make Hemingway’s amazing. The bar’s philosophy is every bottom must have a chair, so you don’t experience that overcrowded feeling. Because of their popularity, Hemingway’s is almost always busy, so we would recommend a reservation or you’ll find yourself waiting outside.

ANONYMOUS BAR Michalská 432/12, Praha 1 +420 608 280 069 www.anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile. The bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender what you like and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the various drink menus as creative as the drinks themselves. Patrons are given a secret menu printed in UV ink, along with a small blacklight, or you can view the latest specialties on a ViewMaster, which was brought to our table. The latest drink menu was inspired by video games (below, you’ll find the Angry Birds inspired drink). Crafted after the hideout in the movie V for Vandetta, AnonymouS has a nice courtyard and cozy bar and makes for a perfect night out to remember. Reservations are taken only until 9pm.

Bars & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the more casual in Manisova and slightly more formal in Týnská). Like it’s New York counterpart, the bar envokes the feeling of a gentleman’s libary. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (mostly for visual aesthetics). The cocktails here are serious business and they offer a wide selection to match what you’re craving. They’re also a cigar bar, so if you’re offended by cigar smoke, you may want to look elsewhere. However, if you’re looking for a nice Cuban to go with your perfectly made cocktail, this is the place to be.

Even before our first drink, we fell in love with 1920’s era feel of the interior, complete with a Mucha-inspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The bar has a nice buzz to it on the inside, and for a while we almost forgot what year it was. There’s a lot of choices on the drink menu, and the signature drinks all come with their own history and story, which your bartender is always happy to explain. The drinks are amazing and original - ther’es simply no other way to desrcibe them.If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s vast and expansive Champagne list.

BUGSY’S Pařížská 1068/10 - Praha 1 +420 224 810 287 www.bugsysbar.cz Bugsy’s is another bar with a great history, popping up in 1992 just after the Velvet Revolution. They’ve seen a lot of changes over the years, but the constant has been their attention to details and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands in stock, as well as over 90 Single Malt Whiskeys and 100 rums. The interior is stylish and upscale, modern and dark. It’s also a cigar-friendly cocktail lounge, with a great selection of cigars in the walk-in humidor near the entry. If you’re a non-smoker, don’t worry – they’ve clearly invested in great extraction fans, so you’ll be fine.

BONVIVANT’s CTC Mánesova 55, 120 00 Vinohrady +420 775 331 862 When Bonvivant's relocated last year, we were worried it would lose of its mid-century charm - but it's only gotten better. When it comes to ordering, forget the menu. Just talk to your bartender. They’re a virtual encyclopedia of drink possibilities and suggestions based on your taste. Incidentally, the “CTC” actually stands for cocktail tapas café, and it hits the mark on each one, serving some pretty damn tasty tapes dishes and coffee as well.

Located in Vinohrady, the bar offers a wide variety of drinks all revolving around the use of rum, don’t expect to find draft beer in a place like this as their name says it all.

Located right on the stairs (schody) leading to the Prague Castle, it's hard to find but well worth the search. Once you're inside, tell the mixologist what flavors you like and he'll fix up your dream cocktail. No website, no number - it's a cozy hidden secret and they're trying to keep it that way.

The Art of U Pivrnce

This Prague pub is adorned with work by a famous Czech Cartoonist By Riley Keefe For some, newspapers are becoming a relic of the past, but the art within them remain alive not only in the confines of the pages, but the walls of one special pub. U Pivrnce in Prague’s Old Town celebrates the laughter and work of Petr Urban, an Olympic medalist and cartoonist whose work fills the halls of his sons pub. The newly renovated indoor area makes for a convivial atmosphere with a showcase of art to keep your eyes glued to the wall and ceiling the entire evening. Along with the newly decorated beer glass chandelier above some contemporary illustrations and timeless classics, U Pivrnce has stood the test of time and will continue to do so with Urban showing no signs of stopping. “People go to this street to see the new wallpaper that is across the wall and dominates the restaurant. We tried to be unique and we think we succeeded in doing so,” says Annie Urban, the wife of Petr. The pub itself has been transformed into a comic book itself, with the walls adorned with new and old comics by Petr Urban. The backsplash of yellow complements the colorful and playful illustrations, creating a welcoming and fun space for an evening of drinks and Czech food. Along with the new renovations, U Pivrnce has released its own version of brandy burned from hops, called Pivovice. A fruity brandy that is mainly referred to as Plum Brandy, this drink is produced mainly in Central and Eastern Europe, giving it an unofficial title as a national drink. The restaurants version is sold under the alias “Pivrncova Pivovice”, decorated with the iconic red-striped t-shirt wearing character from Urban’s comics, Ruda Pivrnec. To compliment the new drink is the release of Urban’s new book titled “The Longest Joke without words in the World”, a picture book full of over 150 jokes and illustrations from the master illustrator himself. Who said picture books are for kids? Urban’s new book is a celebration of his iconic drawings and a simplistic delivery of his timeless humor that has captured the hearts and laughter of Czechs for years. “We actually made the book because most customers did not understand the jokes in the deeper books and always had to translate them. So, Petr Urban thought that he would create a book with the longest joke without words, but to make it funny. It was a big challenge, but he likes it.” In fact, the driving force behind the release of the book was to reach a foreign audience who couldn’t understand Czech. Instead of translating the jokes by words, Urban sough to express his sense of humor through pictures so everyone can understand and have a laugh. Prior to opening U Pivrnce in 1993, Petr Urban

pursued sports, specifically the speedy flat-sled Luger. Urban comes from a family of athletes, as his father, Horst, was an Olympic Luger who represented the then Czechoslovakia. Wanting to continue his legacy, Urban followed in his father footsteps by competing in the 1988 and 1992 Olympics. Despite his success in the world of sports representing his country on the ice, Urban wanted to connect with his countrymen and women more, this time on paper. The fall of the Communist regime in 1989 would provide a window of opportunity for Urban and other illustrators to draw and publish cartoons freely, spawning a new genre of raunchy and, at times, explicit pieces with the goal of making people laugh. This would be the spark of comedy industry for Prague, replacing the pre-revolutionary frowns for some light-hearted jokes and smiles that would mark the beginning of a new phase for the Czech Republic. This spark would go on to produce over 5 million copies of Urban’s illustrations in newspaper and books, solidifying his position as a Czech icon. Urban’s legendary comics place him with the likes of other Czech hero’s like Jaromír Jágr and Dominik Hašek, who competed in the 1998 Winter Olympics, giving the Czech Republic a gold medal in hockey. Petr Urban’s reach in both the world of sports and literature has created a dynamic space for the pub he owns and operates today. With the walls used as a canvas, Urban has

remembered his artistic legacy while inviting others to create one of their own. Decorated on the walls are past masterpieces like “Dobrý voják Švejk” and “The Tales from the Little Quarter”. Downstairs is another piece of art itself with other handwritten jokes created by customers and Urban himself. In terms of the future, Urban’s newly released book may make an appearance along the walls of the restaurant in the years to come. “We would like to make a lounge where “The Longest Joke” is incorporated, but it’s a question of three to five years,” says Annie Urban. With the walls restored to their former glory, U Pivrnce has captured some of the best of Czech culture in the form of cartoons. From the lager beer and classic Czech dishes to the cartoons and laughter that has filled the halls, the pencil drawings continue to satisfy locals and visitors alike. Ruda Pivrnec, one of Urban’s iconic characters, may be 30 years old, but his colorful figure and attitude in cartoons continues to make Czech’s laugh today. “It’s certainly a part of Czech culture, everyone knows his jokes”.

Prague Pride 2019 Prague Pride takes to the streets once more for its most ambitious and colorful festival to date. The celebration, which attracted an impressive 92,000 people with 40,000 participating in the Saturday parade last year, has made an impact on the LGBTQ community both within and outside of Prague. Since 2011 Prague Pride has steadily grown from being one of the most anticipated and celebrated festivals in the country. “I think what makes us special is the quality of the program, we are a weeklong festival. And many other countries are limited to just the parade and maybe some concerts. But we’re a weeklong festival with over 120 events, which is unique”, says Czeslaw Walek, chairman of Prague Pride. This year’s festival will feature similar events to last year with round the clock activities for everyone to take part in. In addition, after the Prague Pride parade will be a Pride Park celebration as a conclusion to the weeklong festivities. This a concert held at Letenské sady Park afterwards featuring over 25 artists on four separate stages. Having built a community space for families and LGBTQ members, this picnic-like area will include a Ferris wheel and dancing space from dusk till dawn, literally. In addition to the parade and concerts, the festival hosts a plethora of events for both LGBTQ members, locals and visitors alike all throughout the day. Talk shows, theatres, movies, parties and more have filled this year line up of events, giving something for everyone to experience. One of the biggest additions this year is Prague Life, where older members of the LGBTQ community discuss their longtime struggle. “This is a topic we haven’t explored before, and we have a good amount of the community who is getting older. During the communist regime, they were all in the closet and their lives were met with both physical and mental challenges. It’s well known, that when older people reach the age of retirement they go back into the closet. With the people that were in the closet during the communist regime, they’re in the closet all the time.” This presents an opportunity to not only reflect on past struggles, but also to look forward to see what challenges lie ahead. Reflecting on how far the parade has come since 2011 is a celebration in itself, but to realize the infinite struggle that’s haunted senior members of the LGBTQ community for decades can inspire hope into the next generation. “It’s really showing the struggle we take all over the world. Every year there are some emotional moments like these,” says Walek. The struggle for acceptance is not limited to just seniors, but people of all ages within the LGBTQ community. Gay marriage is a grey area for the Czech Republic as it has yet to be legalized within the country. This stagnant approach to such a 38

progressive topic has made Prague Pride even more important to LGBTQ members. “We’re definitely going to use the festival to talk about it (Legalizing gay marriage) and to draw public attention to the fact that marriage equality is not as prominent as it should be in the Czech Republic. But also, that the law has been in the parliament for a year and they didn’t vote for it,” says Walek. Prague Pride has established itself as more than just a social event, but rather a political statement as well. With the new mayor of Prague, in office legalizing gay marriage will be at the forefront of his agenda, especially since he will be leading the Saturday parade with other members of parliament. Considering the Pirate Party is one of the only few groups to support the legalization of gay marriage in the Czech Republic, the LGBTQ community is optimistic about the bill being passed in the future. “We want to use the parade, especially, to underline this issue, so we are organizing a large portion of the parade to be about marriage equality. We’ll wear white t-shirts and slogans about marriage equality, so yes, we definitely want to use this opportunity of 50,000 people walking in the streets to show this injustice.” Prague’s week-long Pride festival reaches beyond its own borders, acting as a symbol of hope for other countries as well where some same-sex couples live in fear. “But the further east you go it’s more like a demonstration for basic human rights.

I just recently went to Kiev Pride and it was heavily guarded, almost dangerous for them.” Gay marriage remains an issue for other countries despite the popularity of the festival. Countries like Ukraine and Russia are absent of laws that recognize samesex couples despite years of backlash and protests from citizens. The members of Prague’s LGBTQ community experienced a similar level of fear when they started with just 8,000 but have since grown to not be afraid of who they are. Today the parade is a marker of confidence, happiness, and most importantly pride for the LGBTQ community and those who support it. “For me, it’s about not being afraid of who you are, not to be afraid to express their love to their partner. Just enjoy the fact that they are a little bit different, especially for those who’re coming from outside of Prague, they can get used to this feeling on an everyday basis. This is the day for them to celebrate themselves.”
