PRO TIP:
We suggest using your feet to get around Prague. When necessary, use our amazing and inexpensive transit system. But, If you feel the need to try a scooter or bikesharing, here’s our very biased opinion and the basics of your options...
Just Say No...
Analog and Cool
Electric push scooters just aren’t cool, unless you’re a six year old. They’re also not efficient or much fun on cobblestone streets, which leads many riders to end up where they’re not supposed to be - on the sidewalk. Then people really hate you. We avoid.
Rekola bikes aren’t electric powered, but we love them for two reasons. 1) It’s a Local company and 2) the baskets on the front are really handy for carrying stuff. They’re also the least expensive of the three.

Ten things you need to know about
Czech Christmas
Christmas time is our favorite time of the year, especially here in the Czech Republic. If you’re visiting, you should probably be aware of the basics, and some of the more quirky Czech traditions. Christmas Eve is the main day of celebration – with a family dinner and the opening of gifts while Christmas Day is more low-key. Here’s ten ways Christmas time in the Czech Republic might be different than what you’re used to…
Happy Name Day... Got you an apple!
Move over Santa, It's baby Jesus! Unlike most Germanic cultures, baby Jesus (Ježíšek) brings the presents, not Santa Claus. Gifts are delivered during dinner through an open window and the presents are left under the tree. Before you start picturing infant Jesus carrying in a kids bike it should be noted there are really no images associated with the divine being.
Happy Name Day, Adam and Eve! Hey kids, the Devil will get you! Forget Santa Claus’ naughty or nice list. Saint Mikuláš Day is enough to scare any misbehaving child into obedience for the entire year. Celebrated in Old Town Square and in many Czech villages, this holiday puts a twist on the classic lump of coal. As the legend goes, on the eve of Dec. 5 Saint Mikuláš (not Santa Claus), an angel and a devil wander through the streets asking children if they’ve been good this year. Children usually respond with a yes, a song or a poem. Good children receive candies and fruit, while bad children get a lump of coal or spoiled potatoes. However, truly terrible children are dragged to Hell by the devil. No wonder so many youngsters are spotted crying in Old Town Square on this day when people dress up as the Saint and his companions.

THE PRAGUE VISITOR | December 2019
Similar to a birthday, a Name Day involves celebrating a day of the year that is associated with one's given name. Homage is paid to those bearing the name of the first man and woman on December 24.
...and Speaking of Apples During or after Christmas dinner, each person cuts an apple down the middle to see if it has a star, which means they will survive the next year, or a cross, which means they will die (Luckily it’s almost impossible to get a cross).
Put a ring on it... Tired of swiping on Tinder in search of love? December is the time of year for single women to predict if they will be married in the next year. Close down your app and go throw a shoe over your shoulder instead. If the shoe’s toe is pointing to the door, you’ll be at the altar within the year. Or if you happen to be walking by an elder tree you can shake to see if you hear a dog bark, which makes perfect sense.
There's Carp in the bathtub! A traditional Czech Christmas dinner is made up of several courses, including fish soup, bread with honey, potato salad, fruit and of course fried carp. This meal dates back to the 18th century when carp was cheap enough to be a commonplace dish in many Czech kitchens. Now in the days leading up to Dec. 24, Christmas markets will begin selling live carp from large vats of water. Many families keep the slippery fish in their bathtubs until it ends up on their dinner plates. A perfect new (and temporary) friend for the kids.
Seeing Golden Pigs Looking for a bit of luck? Perhaps try the Czech tradition of fasting all day before the big Christmas dinner. Superstition has it that if you see a golden pig (zlaté prasátko) – you'll have good luck for all of the upcoming year.
First one to leave the dinner table dies... Unlike other countries, the Czech Republic’s main holiday festivities are on Dec. 24. This is the day where the Christmas feast is served, which is often connected with many superstitions and customs. While many of these aren’t practiced today, mostly because it would take forever to get through the meal, many involve wealth, good luck or death. For example, it is said that the first person to leave the table on Christmas Eve will be the first to die in the new year, and so everyone should get up and leave the table at the same time. Rather than enjoy leftovers in the days to come, you should bury them around trees so they bear fruit. And don’t forget to put fish scales under your dinner plate or in your wallet to bring wealth. Ew.
More Christmas ways to die Superstition and fortune-telling seems to surround the traditional Czech Christmas, foretelling not just upcoming success, but also impending death. Families put a candle in a walnut shell and watch where the walnut boat floats, which provides a prediction for the upcoming year – once again including death as one of the many outcomes. Other superstitions include pouring molten lead into water and reading the shapes to determine fate in the upcoming year.
St. Stephens and Chill A more recent Czech tradition which takes place on Svátek svatého Štěpána (or St. Stephen's Day) involves jumping into a freezing cold lake or cold river. In Prague, you can join the plunge into the Vltava by the National Theatre. We'd recommend bringing your own towel and a bottle of slivovice.

Christmas Market Guide Advent wreaths are lining the shelves. St. Nicholas arm-in-arm with angels and devils is strolling through Old Town Square. The smell of mulled wine permeates the air. Christmas is upon us. Prague is known this time of year for its magical charm by tourists and residents alike, and for good reason. Come late November, Christmas markets start popping up on every street corner as people hurry to finish their holiday shopping. In preparation, here is our guide to navigating them.
Old Town Square
(Staroměstské náměstí) As the city’s largest market, Old Town Square encompasses many Prague landmarks, including the Astronomical Clock and the statue of Jan Hus. With a nativity scene, concert stage and an enormous Christmas tree poised in front of Týn Church, this spot provides the best photo opportunities for both travelers and residents. Bundle up and meander through the various stalls selling traditional embroidery, ornaments and wooden trinkets. When you need a shopping break, enjoy carolling and other musical performances with some spiced wine and sausage from one of the food vendors. Through Jan. 6 10:00–22:00
Wenceslas Square (Václavské náměstí)
Prague Castle
Republic Square
(Pražský hrad)
(Náměstí Republiky)
Nestled just behind St. Vitus Cathedral, the Prague Castle Christmas market is like traveling back in time. This market is smaller and less crowded thanks to security lines leading into the castle complex, and its carefully selected vendors sell many high-quality goods perfect for authentic gifts for friends back home. Adding to the atmosphere, many stalls offer traditional Czech food, including ham roasting over a fire. If you want to combine some holiday shopping with sightseeing, this is your best pick. Through Jan. 6 Mon–Thurs 9:00–18:00 Fri.–Sun. 9:00–19:00
If you’re more interested in grabbing some delicious holiday grub and an alcoholic beverage than buying gifts, the Náměstí Republiky market should be on your list. Situated next to Palladium Shopping Center, this market is known for its food as well as its affordable prices. It’s location also makes it ideal as a quick stop for mistletoe or an advent wreath without the hassle of large crowds. Through Dec. 29 10:00–22:00
Peace Square (Náměstí Míru)
If you want to get a head start on the Christmas markets or if you’re in Prague earlier in the season, Náměstí Míru is the place to go. This market usually goes up before the one in Old Town and is popular among locals, so it’s a good look at an authentic Czech Christmas. This is also the spot if you’re interested in handmade gifts, such as soaps, lotions and knit scarves, as opposed to the more touristy options at Old Town Square. The neoGothic Saint Ludmila Church adds a nice touch to the ambience as well. Through Dec. 24 10:00–19:00
While not quite as bustling as Old Town Square, this Christmas market is the next best choice to celebrate Prague’s holiday spirit. Just a 10-minute walk from Kampa Island Old Town and located toward the lower part of the promenade, the Wenceslas Square market also has a While not as big as other markets, Kampa Island is the Christmas tree and nativity scene, albeit a little smaller best place to enjoy the beautiful views of the Vltava than its more popular counterpart. Many of the vendors River with a cup of grog or hot chocolate. In addition here specialize in wooden and steel goods, making it to the basics, this market also offers straw ornaments, an efficient stop if you need to pick up a unique gift in glass figurines and some other unique souvenirs and between shopping trips to Bata and Van Graaf. gifts. Close to Kampa Museum, the Charles Bridge and Through Jan. 6 other sites, this market is a good low-key alternative if 10:00–22:00 By Jiří Mocek, Havel to the Castle, 2019, oil on canvas. From upcoming exhibitionyou don’t want to skip sightseeing. “Velvet Memories” in Novoměstská radnice (from 22.11.2019)
Havel’s Christmas Market There are many year-round farmers’ markets that transform in December, but Havel’s is one worth visiting. Many of those who frequent this market will recall its popular toy the screaming witch, but that’s just one of the many knick knacks and souvenirs you can find. Wooden puppets, leather goods, ceramics and much more await shoppers in this alley tucked between Old Town Square, Náměstí Republiky and Václavské náměstí. All year 06:00-18:30
Manifesto Market With locations at Florenc and Smíchov, Manifesto Market is the destination for the trendy. Known for being food and retail pop-ups, these locations are transforming into winter markets with Christmas trees, holiday treats and heated transparent igloos, so you can get festive and stay warm. The Florenc location features brands like Fellof, specializing in lamb and sheepskin products, and BeWooden, a Czech designer of chic accessories. After you buy a gift for that creative professional in your life, enjoy a warm drink in their red and white porcelain cups created just for the season. Two tales reimagined
Ballet weaves together two classic Christmas stories
By Nicole Ely It’s the suburbs of 19th century London on Christmas Eve. The familiar character Ebenezer Scrooge, Charles Dickens’ greedy moneylender, is busy reminding his borrowers of what they owe him. Little does he know that spirits, a Satanic sabbath and a nutcracker await him. The story is a well-known holiday classic about redemption, but this one has an unexpected twist thanks to Hungarian choreographer Youri Vàmos. Instead of giving audiences just one classic Christmas story, Vàmos gives them two. “The Nutcracker–A Christmas Carol,” playing at the National Theatre through Jan. 11, tells the dual stories of Scrooge and Clara, the girl whose nutcracker magically comes to life. Since its debut in Saint Petersburg in 1892, “The Nutcracker” has been popular with audiences for ages. It has undergone many reiterations in choreography and story since its premiere. Vàmos’s version, which had its first performance in 1988 in Bonn, elevates the tale above a meer Christmas story into a fresh, but timeless adventure that is great for all ages, all times of the year. It first came to Prague in December 2004 and went on to be a big hit. “The Nutcracker–A Christmas Carol” is not
Vàmos’s first time he has added a different take on a classic story. He often adds imaginative revisions to classical works. For example, his production of “The Sleeping Beauty” became “Anastasia–The Last Daughter of the Romanov Czars.” Vàmos started his career as a ballet dancer at the State Ballet School in Budapest. He’s spent most of his professional career in Germany after he was offered a contract at Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. From there he gravitated to choreography until eventually becoming artistic director of Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf, where he enjoyed considerable success for 13 years. His performances often sold out and earned him great recognition. Many consider him to be one of the best choreographic storytellers of today. Petr Zuska, the artistic director of the National Theatre Ballet in Prague called him “the last ballet narrator.” Vàmos is also one of the last European choreographers who aims to keep full-length ballets, with “The Nutcracker–A Christmas Carol” clocking in at two hours with a 20-minute intermission. While staying true to the traditional foundation of his art, Vàmos breathes new life into his productions by focusing on expressing the psychological nuances of his characters. The ballet opens with “A Christmas Carol.” After Scrooge’s accountant Bob Cratchit is caught making
fun of his boss’s cantankerous spirit, he is fired on the spot leaving him without the money to buy Christmas gifts. Clara, instead of being a part of the bourgeois Stahlbaum family, is Bob Cratchit’s daughter who had hoped to receive a toy nutcracker for Christmas. In this version, it is Scrooge who breaks the nutcracker, not her bullying brother. From there much of the stories progress as they did in their original versions. Scrooge is visited by ghosts and is plagued by visions of hell if he doesn’t change his ways. Clara eventually dances with her nutcracker, once the broken toy transforms into a prince in the famous pas de deux. Luckily for fans of the traditional “Nutcracker,” many of the most celebrated aspects of the show remain in Vàmos’s version. In addition to the pas de deux, the Dance of Nations in the final act also stayed. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s amazing score has also been relatively untouched, so fans of the Russian composer can still enjoy the lightness his music brings to the story. A beautiful tale of the power of Christmas being able to transform human character, “The Nutcracker–A Christmas Carol” is the perfect show to buy tickets to this holiday season. You can purchase tickets online at narodni-divadlo.cz.

Add a carefully selected music program - karaoke, 80s & 90s retro parties, DJ performances, live concerts and rooftop gatherings in the summer - and you can rest assured knowing you’re bound to have fun. Vibe: Perfect option for an entertaining, fun dinner followed by a night of dancing.
Vibe: EDM and Drum&Bass central.
Café 80’s 8) Radost FX 7#
Bělehradská 120, Prague 2 www.radostfx.cz First opened in the early ‘90s just a few years after the Velvet Revolution, Radost FX is open Thursday to Saturday and offers the best of house, R&B and hip hop music—Rihanna even filmed one of her music videos there. Above the club is the venue’s restaurant and cafe, well-known as one of the best brunch spots in all of Prague. Vibe: The place to go to bond with your friends and a
V kolkovně 6, Prague 1 www.cafe80.cz You can’t go wrong with 80’s music. Whether you’re nostaligic or just appreciative of all things “totally awesome”, the two-story venue features an 80’s themed café restaurant on the first floor. But the real story here is the basement. A nicely sized music club with an illuminated dance floor, plus a large bar and VIP lounge make it a night worthy of the MTV generation. Vibe: Classic tunes and upbeat vibes, perfect for a night full of dancing to your favorite, re-vamped 80’s hits.
diverse mix of strangers.
Vzorkovna (Dog Bar) 7! Chapeau Rouge 7&
Národní 11, Prague 1 Too cool for a website
Chapeau Rouge is a bar and music club that ranks among the biggest in Prague with 3 floors, 4 bars & 3 stages. Dance aggressively or hang out at a table with friends, Chapeau has something for everyone. You may even stumble upon it all on your own: it’s in the center right behind Old Town Square. Vibe: One-of-a-kind atmospere for a night filled with
An underground labyrinth and local hangout this place is the weird artsy side of Prague. Affectionately referred to as “Dog Bar” by it’s mostly 20-something hipster patrons because of the giant dog that roams the bar, this is not your typical place-for-a-pint. Drinks are prepaid for through bracelets at the door. Come for a unique experience unlike anything else and live music ranging from Eastern European folk to Salsa.
inexpensive drinks and friends from all walks of life.
Vibe: Live music scene, perfect for college kids and

young-adults.
U Sudu 7*
Vodičkova 10, Prague 1 www.usudu.cz U Sudu is the best of both worlds with a wine bar upstairs and an underground, cave-like labyrinth downstairs. When you walk in, wind around til you hit the stairs that descend into one of the coolest places to drink on Earth... It is indeed smoky, but get past that and the place is just mythic.
Duplex 7^

place to lose your friends but meet some new ones
This rooftop bar pairs amazing music with amazing views. Right on Wenceslas Square, you can see the entire city after your elevator ride up to the top. Duplex brings in awesome DJ’s from around the world which makes for a perfect night to ball out and get VIP. It’s open late so make sure to stay for the sunrise--don’t worry, the sun rises pretty early here.
along the way.
Vibe: Awesome views, all nighters
Vibe: Hub for college kids and locals alike, perfect

THE PRAGUE VISITOR | December 2019
Cocktail guide & wine bar guide
The best cocktail bars in Prague (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It’s always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar). The numbers correspond to the map in the center of the magazine.
Le Valmont 9)
Uhelný trh 9, Prague 1 levalmont.cz
The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Miloš Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Reservations: +420 224 267 266
Schody Home Bar 7^
Zámecké schody 8, Prague 1 Located right on the stairs (schody in Czech) of Prague Castle, it’s hard to find but well worth the search. Once you’re inside, tell the mixologist what flavors you like and he’ll fix up your dream cocktail. Like sister restaurant Parlour, - it’s a cozy hidden secret and they’re trying to keep it that way.
Black Angel’s 8#

Bar and Books 8%
Mánesova 64, Prague 2 and Týnská 19, Prague 1 barandbooks.cz Like its New York counterpart, the bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (mostly for visual aesthetics). Two locations and reservations online.
L’Fleur 9$
V kolkovně 5, Prague 1 lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with the 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Mucha-inspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which the bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list. +420 734 255 665 for Reservations
Parlour 8$
Krakovská 15, Prague 1 parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. Karolíny Světlé 26, Prague 1 hemingwaybar.cz
AnonymouS Bar's drinks are just as amazing as the presentation.
Chances are, if you’ve asked around, Hemingway’s Bar has already been recommended. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. Reservations are highly recommended. +420 773 974 764 for Reservations.
Cash Only Bar 8( Liliová 3, Prague 1 cashonlybar.cz

The classy bottles from Aurosa will be enough to quiet any woman’s complaints about getting beer as a Christmas present. If you’re a man and you don’t like beer, are you a man really? Luckily the Czech Republic is the beer mecca of the world, and their drinking habits date back to practically the beginning of time. Strahov Monastic Brewery, just a short walk from Prague Castle, has been brewing since the 13th century, so they know what they’re doing. Their new doppelbock, which will be available on Dec. 3, has just the right amount of hoppy bitterness to balance its malty sweetness, not a bad combination for a beer or a man. 120Kč (for half liter) Strahovské nádvoří 301 233 353 155

“Our restaurant descends from an era when celebration of life, culture, luxury, open mindedness, hospitality and happiness all put together were a must. We the two brothers at K have designed the décor of the restaurant in the spirit of what Kapurthala , a European holiday retreat could have looked like. K’s modernity is expressed through its ambience, music and fashionable spirit.”
