February in Prague! Valentine’s Day (February 14) isn’t widely celebrated here. In fact, the day of love didn't come along here until the 1990s. To us, that’s a good thing. Only a few restaurants are fully booked with fixed menus, and there’s no heavy marketing pressure to proclaim your undying love to your significant other with the expected Valentine’s gift. Instead, Prague offers what it always does… an invariably endless supply of romantic adventures down it’s cobblestoned streets. This month, we take a trip back to the 1920s with Royal Theatre's latest production - Czech Cabaret Show. The new show offers an old variety show atmosphere in an age-appropriate theatre, and we think it's absolutely worth seeing. There are two shows per week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays. In 10 Things, find our picks of the not-to-miss events this month. Among our favorites are concerts from Kiefer Sutherland (who believe it or not is an amazing country singer in addition to being Jack Bauer from 24). There's also Masopust this month. Carnival is celebrated the world over. Think of this is our celebration of Fat Tuesday. There's a variety of traditions involved, but perhaps the most notable is the pig slaughter - which involves an entire pig - and of course beer (as you might have guessed). And if you're not a fan already, be sure and like us on Facebook and find even more things to do there an on our website. Plus you can also send us a Facebook message and chat with Golem, our intuitive chatbot, who has thousands of events to suggest each month including concerts, exhibitions, plays and even more.
3000+ More Events 350+ Restaurants tips and more! All at your disposal - just send us a message on Facebook Messenger.

PRO TIP:
We suggest using your feet to get around Prague. When necessary, use our amazing and inexpensive transit system. But, If you feel the need to try a scooter or bikesharing, here’s our very biased opinion and the basics of your options...
Just Say No...
Analog and Cool
Electric push scooters just aren’t cool, unless you’re a six year old. They’re also not efficient or much fun on cobblestone streets, which leads many riders to end up where they’re not supposed to be - on the sidewalk. Then people really hate you. We avoid.
Rekola bikes aren’t electric powered, but we love them for two reasons. 1) It’s a Local company and 2) the baskets on the front are really handy for carrying stuff. They’re also the least expensive of the three.

THINGS OUR TOP PICKS OF THINGS TO DO this month
Kiefer Sutherland Saturday, February 15, 19:00
Wait, Kiefer Sutherland... like Jack Bauer from 24? Yep, one in the same. The Hollywood veteran and son of film great Donald Sutherland who has starred in great films like Young Guns, Stand By Me, Flatliners (and our favorite Relecutant President in Designated Survivor) also happens to also be a pretty damn good country musician as well. Sutherland's first album Down in a Hole (2016) won critical acclaim and he's currently touring in support of his new album Reckless and Me. Lucerna Music Bar Vodičkova 36

Hot 8 Brass Band Thursday, February 13, 21:00 The Grammy-nominated New Orleans brass band is bringing a Lousianna style Mardis Gras to Europe on their latest tour. We've seen a H8BB show in the US and can't say enough. They've been accurately described as "A dominant force on New Orleans streets—the band you want to dance behind during a Sunday second-line parade," by writer Larry Blumenfeld. Even if you're not typically an instrumental music fan, this show is still a crowd pleaser. MeetFactory Ke Sklárně 15
Pete Tong (UK) Sunday, February 22, 23:00 Pete Tong is a staple in the UK music scene. His BBC 1 radio shows Essential Mix and Essential Selection are a right of passage for anyone who is anyone who is a DJ or EDM producer. But, Pete Tong is a highly respected DJ in his own right. From 2003 to 2007 Tong was the resident DJ at Pacha nightclub in Ibiza, where he oversaw the Pure Pacha events. In 2008 Tong left Pacha and signed with Eden nightclub in Sant Antoni de Portmany to host his own Wonderland night. These days he spends his time between the UK, Ibiza and the US. Onegin February 20th, 19:00 (Premiere) Onegin is one of John Cranko’s top-notch creations. Based on A. S. Pushkin’s well-known novel in verse, the ballet follows the story of a world-weary Russian aristocrat, who spurns the love of the young, earnest Tatyana, giving preference instead to flirting with her sister. A few years later, Onegin changes his mind and becomes obsessed with winning Tatyana’s affection, yet it is too late. Cranko’s feted ballet requires from the dancers expressive acting, brilliant technique and a profound sense for the rendition of the characters’ emotions. This new variety show features stunning acts, amazing costumes and great dance numbers By Nicole Ely Stepping into the Royal Theatre on a Saturday night is like time traveling back to the First Republic. Lively jazz music plays in the background as you are greeted by vaudevillian performers. A mime escorts you to your seat. Those around you are laughing and sipping sparkling wine from ice buckets. Before long, the lights dim and women outfitted in shimmering rhinestones and feathered headdresses dance onto the stage. The new variety show “Czech Cabaret” is a production meant for those looking for a fun and unique live theatre experience. Inspired by old shows of the 1920s and 30s, the musical revue features daring knife throwers, stunning acrobatics and talented aerialists that swing almost too close to the audience. Taking songs from well-known musicals like “Chicago,” “Moulin Rouge” and (of course)
“Cabaret,” the show is the work of three Czech women who do the work of an entire production team, Director Nikol Prokešová, her sister and lead performer Felicita Victorie Prokešová and Producer Šárka Šedivá. As director, Nikol is the stage mom of the company. Whether she’s making sure the dancers are on queue or helping find lost socks backstage, she looks after the company as her family. Born in a small Czech village, Nikol and Felicita grew up loving the arts and live performance. Nikol left for Prague to study acting, and Felicita followed once she was old enough. The sisters’ support for each other runs deep. At Felicita’s very first professional audition four years ago, Nikol was there cheering her on. “She was my role model and inspiration,” Felicita says. Both sisters had landed several roles before starting “Czech Cabaret.” Nikol starred as Frida Kahlo in a one woman show and also briefly
worked for Prima Televize, but nothing compared to live performance. “It’s the atmosphere, the people, the energy,” she says. “Theater is the only one for me.” The idea for the show first came to Nikol after she experienced an underground cabaret in New York. It was unlike anything she had seen before. “There were actresses, dancers, artistic performers,” Nikol says. “I loved it and knew I must have something like it.” Nikol had her vision. She just needed a crew. She found the perfect partner in Šárka Šedivá, the show’s producer who lends a hand with everything from auditioning the right performers, finding the right venue and getting a budget for the beautiful handmade costumes. Not long after Šedivá joined the team, Felicita came on as the choreographer and lead singer in the show. Now, Nikol had her dream team. “If you want to work on a big show, you must have people who

are on the same wavelength,” she says. For the sisters, working together has been wonderful and devoid of the common sibling rivalry some might expect from a pair of theatrical relatives. “I just see my sister and I know exactly what she needs,” Felicita says. In addition to directing the show, Nikol also designed and made all the costumes, which are showstoppers in themselves. The bejeweled pieces evoke Jean Paul Gaultier (whom Nikol jokingly considers a member of her creative family) mixed with Las Vegas showgirl. While they’re stunning, they’re also practical, designed specifically for speedy costume changes. Choosing a favorite costume is like choosing a favorite child. “Every costume is special. I love them all,” Felicita says. “I feel like a star in these costumes.” With the cast coming together and the costumes under way, the next thing was to find the right theatre. Then they found the Royal Theatre at Vinohradská 48. The Royal Theatre is the perfect symbol of show business in the First Republic era from 1918–1938, which is also a perfect fit for the show’s vibe. It was originally opened as a cinema in 1929, and has a large stage, cocktail lounge seating, a balcony and a full bar in the back. After the Velvet Revolution and the rise of Cinema City and other movie multiplexes, the theatre basically
went dormant until Jean-Christophe Gramont decided to restore it to its former glory. “I think Gramont was looking for someone to bring it alive again,” Šedivá says.
Once the women saw the Royal, they knew it was perfect. An old theater can also come with a few mishaps. The women recall one of their first performances where the lights went out and the emergency fire alarm came on during the “All that Jazz” number. Luckily they were able to fix the problem quickly. Afterall, the show must go on. “At the end of the show that, most of the audience told me they loved the show so much they didn’t even remember the problem,” Felicita says. When looking at her work with “Czech Cabaret” and her sister, Felicita regards it as the best experience of her career. She knows that might sound dramatic considering she’s only in her early 20s, but the love and community she feels getting to work with Nikol is unique. Šedivá notices this as well. She notes that Nikol and Felicita are about 10 years apart in age, and while they did have a good relationship before working together, the show has brought them so much closer. “It’s been wonderful seeing them find each other again,” she says. Just walking into the Royal, you get a sense of the love that is invested in the show. It is unlike others in Prague. The performers interact with the audience and the setting creates a vintage and intimate ambience. Nikol hopes the audience will feel involved, and even dance in their seats to the upbeat numbers, something she says many Czechs might feel embarrassed about at first. “We want to break that barrier between the performers and the audience,” she says. “Afterall, it’s really our show together.”

Prague Comic-Con 2020 Prague Comic-Con was born when Pavel Renčín met Václav Pravda more than a year ago. Renčín, the marketing director for Active Radio, is an avid science fiction and fantasy fan as well as an amateur writer. Pravda, also a scifi enthusiast, had experience hosting several fan conferences throughout the region. “It was a perfect match,” Renčín says. The two teamed up to bring the world renowned comic-book and entertainment convention to the Czech capital for the first time. Prague Comic-Con will be held from Feb. 7–9 at O2 Universum. For three days, fans can enjoy non-stop programming and exhibitions featuring everything from video gaming and discussions with Hollywood actors to signings with comic-book authors and cosplay. “Since it’s the first event, we’re trying to be as colorful as possible and we’ll find out what people like the most,” Renčín says. Most of the program will be in Czech, however the highest profile events, like discussions with filmmakers or other foreigners, will be in English with Czech translation. Autographs and photos with actors are allowed with payment. “This community is a world community,” Renčín says. “We’re happy to bring so many fans together so they can share what they love and maybe discover something new.”
COMIC-CON MUST SEES RON PERLMAN
The star of Prague Comic-Con will be Hellboy himself, Ron Perlman. Perlman’s resume speaks for itself with more than 200 theatre, television and film credits dating back to the late 1970s. His career encompasses many genres from drama to sci-fi to thriller, but it was his collaboration with visionary director Guillermo del Toro on the “Hellboy” that solidified him in the mainstream. Now the actor is returning to Prague, where most of the comic book franchise was shot, for the city’s inaugural gathering of fanboys and fangirls. Present Friday 2.7 and Saturday 2.8
CASPER VAN DIEN
Hopefully you’re aware of the 1997 cult classic “Starship Troopers.” If not, put this magazine down right now and find it streaming online. We’ll wait. While the satirical sci-fi movie also starred Neil Patrick Harris and Denise Richards, it also served as Casper Van Dien’s breakout role. The actor’s been in more than 60 film and television projects since then, but you know you really want to ask him what it was like battling those evil alien Bugs. Present Saturday 2.8 and Sunday 2.9
VLADIMIR FURDIK
“Game of Thrones” fans will be happy to know that one of the series’ most chilling villains was played by a Slovak. While the Night King is Furdik’s most recent role, he’s also had a long career as a Hollywood stuntman, standing in for actors on films including “Thor: The Dark World,” “Skyfall” and “Prometheus.” If you see him, make sure to ask the leader of the White Walkers what it was like stunting for Nicolas Cage. Just don’t bring any dragon glass. Present Friday 2.7 and Saturday 2.8
ANNA SHAFFER
“The Witcher” was one of Netflix’s most anticipated fantasy series with rising star Anna Shaffer cast as the sorceress Triss. However, this is not Shaffer’s first bout with magic. Harry Potter fanatics will recognize the British actress as Gryffindor student Romilda Vane who doled out love potions and joined forces against the evil Voldemort. Perhaps she’ll have a few tips on how to defend yourself against the dark arts. Present Sunday 2.9
DANNY JOHN JULES
The sci-fi comedy series “Red Dwarf” is close to many Czechs’ hearts as it was one of the first Western shows to gain popularity after the end of Communism, according to Renčín. One of the show’s most beloved characters will be making an appearance in Prague. Professional dancer and singer Danny John Jules portrayed Cat, a humanoid creature that evolved from the lead character’s pet feline. While he might’ve been mostly preoccupied with sleeping and self grooming on the show, we’re sure the talented star will be even more lively during his Comic-Con appearance. Present Friday 2.7 and Saturday 2.8
BRIAN AZZARELLO Actors are great and all, but ComicCon is really meant for comic book fans. Which is why it’s a great opportunity to meet some of the creative minds behind your favorite graphic series, like Brian Azzarello. A best-selling author, Azzarello has penned stories featuring some of DC’s most well-known good guys and bad guys, including Batman, Superman, the Joker and many more. Present all days
BEN AARONOVITCH Television screenwriter Ben Aaronovitch is another good person to check out in between cosplaying and Q&A sessions. Aaronovitch used to work on the famous English series “Doctor Who.” Since then, he has created the popular urban fantasy Peter Grant book series, which focuses on a police constable’s dealings with the supernatural. Present Friday 2.7 and Sunday 2.9 O2 universum Českomoravská 2345/17 Tickets available at www.comiccon.cz.

THE PRAGUE VISITOR | February 2020
Masopust has a lot of traditions - festivities and costumes - but really, we're here for the food.
Celebrating Masopust Carnival is a pretty global concept. Popular incarnations span the world from Brazil to Venice and of course there’s Mardis Gras in New Orleans, Louisanna. Prague’s version is called Masopust , and as you'd expect - there's beer and pork. Dating back to the 13th century, the word ‘masopust’ means ‘meat feast’ and is the equivalent of ‘Shrove Tuesday’ or Fat Tuesday. Masopust and especially the few last days of this period (fašank, končiny) were an official holiday of feasting for people in the past. The celebration historically served to bid goodbye to winter and celebrate the fertility of spring. In modern times, it marks the beginning of the Lenten season with a celebration and feasting. Then, the forty days long
Lent followed – consisting of a restricted diet of mostly lentils, baked potatoes, eggs, cheese, and boiled semolina were consumed. Long ago, during this period it was customary for groups of men dressed in costumes to go door to door (like grown Halloween trick-ortreaters) singing and dancing in exchange for pork, doughnuts (note: that doesn’t mean trldnek) or brandy. These days, roasted pig, alcohol and singing and dancing all still play an important part in the modern annual celebrations of Prague’s Carnival. Modern times find a variety of Masopust parties and parades full of colourful costumes all around Prague throughout the month. Singing, dancing, eating and of course drinking are all intregal parts of Prague’s Masopust festivities. So what can you expect besides the costumes and masks? Roasted pig – and we mean the whole pig. Often placed outside in an open area, it can be a bit of a shock for the uninitiated to stumble upon
a pig on a spit in the middle of the city. But, the pig slaughter is part of the traditional celebrations. This year, you can enjoy a traditional pig slaughter at three of Prague’s most popularfarmers' markets – Náplavka (located right on the river) on Saturday, February 15, Heřmaňák on Saturday, February 22, and finally at Kuban market on Saturday, February 29, 2020. The feast is prepared by butchers Karel Kvarda and František Foltýn. Since all three events correspond with the regular farmer’s markets, you can expect an overload of food and drinks and a festive atmosphere. If you’re looking for something a little closer to the castle, there’s also a traditional pig slaughter at the Strohov Brewery located at the Strahov Monistary. The event takes place on Saturday, February 22nd in the brewery garden. They’ll also be serving up a special beer – Sv. Norbert Smoked Porter whisky-wood aged dark beer, with a gentle smoked aroma from the smoke malt.

Cocktail guide & wine bar guide
The best cocktail bars in Prague (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It’s always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar). The numbers correspond to the map in the center of the magazine.
Le Valmont 9)
Uhelný trh 9, Prague 1 levalmont.cz
The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Miloš Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Reservations: +420 224 267 266
Schody Home Bar 7^
Zámecké schody 8, Prague 1 Located right on the stairs (schody in Czech) of Prague Castle, it’s hard to find but well worth the search. Once you’re inside, tell the mixologist what flavors you like and he’ll fix up your dream cocktail. Like sister restaurant Parlour, - it’s a cozy hidden secret and they’re trying to keep it that way.
Black Angel’s 8#
Staroměstské náměstí 29, Prague 1 blackangels.cz
Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Old Town astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. With high cellar ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. +420 224 213 807 for Reservations.
Bar and Books 8%
Mánesova 64, Prague 2 and Týnská 19, Prague 1 barandbooks.cz Like its New York counterpart, the bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (mostly for visual aesthetics). Two locations and reservations online.
L’Fleur 9$
V kolkovně 5, Prague 1 lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with the 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Mucha-inspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which the bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list. +420 734 255 665 for Reservations
Parlour 8$
Krakovská 15, Prague 1 parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. Reservations: +420 777 200 015
Crazy Daisy 9(
Václavské náměstí 4, Prague 1 crazydaisy.cz Somewhat hidden at the bottom of Wenceslas Square, this one of our favourite new hotspots. First Republic style interior, bar staff dressed the part and videomapping on the walls that pushes reality - it feels like you’re in The Great Gatsby. Reservations: +420 273 130 486
Bugsy’s 9%
Pařížská 10, Prague 1 bugsysbar.cz
Popping up just after the Velvet Revolution. Their one constant has been attention to detail and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands of champagne and prosecco, as well as over 90 single malt whiskeys and 100 types of rum. +420 224 810 287 for Reservations.
Tretter’s 8@
V kolkovně 3, Prague 1 tretters.cz
The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years, so it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. Soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. +420 224 811 165 for Reservations.
AnonymouS Bar 9# Michalská 12, Prague 1 anonymousbar.cz
It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile, the bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender your likes and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the secret drink menu printed in UV ink and read with a small blacklight. Reservations are taken only until 9pm at +420 608 280 069.
Hemingway Bar 9!
Karolíny Světlé 26, Prague 1 hemingwaybar.cz
AnonymouS Bar's drinks are just as amazing as the presentation.
Chances are, if you’ve asked around, Hemingway’s Bar has already been recommended. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. Reservations are highly recommended. +420 773 974 764 for Reservations.
Cash Only Bar 8( Liliová 3, Prague 1 cashonlybar.cz
Just around the corner from its older sibling Hemingway’s, this little gem is making its own name with cocktails like Pin-Up Martini, made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne. It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and, you guessed it—the bar doesn’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way, they do serve amazing hot dogs.
Green Devil’s Absinth Bar 7(
Týn 7, Prague 1 If you’re looking for an authentic and eclectic experience in absinth tasting, check out the Green Devil’s Absinth Bar in Old Town. The unique atmosphere accentuates the hand-curated products; ranging from quality beverages to absinth-flavored ice cream. This location is a great place to spend an evening and learn about the history and culture of absinth. Reservations: +420 728 326 344
Hoffa
Senovážné nám. 22, Prague 1 One of the first non-smoking bars in Prague, Hoffa Bar has become a hotspot for evening drinks since it opened in 2013. Situated just
off of Wencesles Square, Hoffa Bar regularly hosts DJ’s and live music of all genres along with monthly events listed on their calendar. Their menu boasts a wide selection of wines from all over Europe as well as cocktails, some homemade recipes as well as classics.
La Bodeguita del Medio 8)
Kaprova 5, Prague 1 labodeguitadelmedio.cz With it’s colonial-style interior straight from Old Havana, La Bodeguita is on point. In addition to great food, bar staff have perfected their craft with regional drinks, from the Cuba Libre to the Mojito. Located underneath Cohiba Atmosphere. +420 224 813 922 for Reservations
Cohiba Atmosphere 8! Kaprova 5, Prague 1 cohibaatmosphere.cz
Referred to as the Havana of Prague, this cigar club is more than just premium cigars. Refined cocktails, and fine wine quality spirits are all served in this classy setting. The sleek design of the bar, combined with the top-notch service of the bartenders makes this the perfect spot for a quality drink. +420 224 818 373 for Reservations.
Vinograf 8(
Senovážné náměstí 23, Prague 1 Míšeňská 8, Prague 1 vinograf.cz There are two convenient locations of one of our favorite wine bars one off of Wenceslas Square and one just under Charles Bridge, each with their own distinct personality, but both cozy and comfortable with a reliable selection of good wines. +420 214 214 681 for Reservations.
Na břehu Rhôny 4$ Na Hrobci 1, Prague 2 nabrehurhony.cz
Na břehu Rhôny is one of our favorite wine destinations. Pour your own French wines and keep track on a notepad. Delicious food platters are also available and the service is friendly and quick. +420 733 785 377
U Staré studny 2& Tržiště 3, Prague 1 ustarestudny.cz
Step into the luxurious wine bar and find every kind of unique wine, cognac, or champagne to sample with a tasting flight. They offer daily wine tastings, with at least six premium Czech wines to sample by the glass each day.
VELTLIN 4%
Křižíkova 115, Prague 8 veltlin.cz
Our go-to when in the Karlín area, Veltlin offers a variety of Czech, Moravian, and Central European wines. The staff are great and the owner, Bogdan, is an awardwinning Wine Guru (who is down to earth and friendly even with nonguru wine fans).
Vinotéka U Mouřenína 1( Tržiště 17, Prague 1
vinotekaumourenina.cz
Cozy wine bar and shop with an excellent selection of wines at great prices for Malá Strana. You can also enjoy cheese and bread plates with your glasses of wine, perfect for a cozy evening with a friend or significant other.

Partygoers of every age and all walks of life can be seen here, getting down to oldie hits from Blondie to Nirvana. Vibe: Like being at your favorite throwback concert, except this time you can get on the stage and dance.
Cross Club 6&
Plynární 23, Prague 7 www.crossclub.cz Cross Club is a labyrinth of small bars and dancefloors pumping music from dubstep and techno to reggae and hip-hop. The club’s psychedelic, industrial décor is a sight to see in itself—every piece of the building from the walls to the ceiling is constructed to move and pulsate with the music, some of it you can even interact with. It’s one of the most unique experiences you’ll have with nightlife in Prague. Cross Club is a bit out of the city center, but worth the trek. Check the website to see what kind of music will be pulsating through the multi-level space. Vibe: Euphoric and alternative, definitely in a category of it’s own.

V kolkovně 1, Prague 1 www.jamesdean.cz Okay, we admit that this one’s kind of kitschy— but only in the best way. Named for the iconic rebel and actor, the bar has a classic 1950’s American diner feel turned late-night club. Vibe: Modern twist on a classic time, all ages and all sorts of feels.
Harley’s 7(
Dlouhá 18, Prague 1 www.harleys.cz Harley's is described as the coolest hell on earth. This American-style biker bar opens late and is always rockin’ and rollin’ with live DJs and music acts. A Man's Guide for not messing up
Valentine's Day Although it's not a Czech thing, celebrating Valentine’s Day in Prague isn’t hard with a little planning (something us men aren't always great at). The city is a living fairytale (and sometimes we forget that). It only takes a glance at its stunning castles, charming cobbled streets, and baroque gardens to understand why. But if you’re head-over-heels and looking to amp up the romance even further this Valentine’s Day, we’re here to help. Whether your game is fancy wine bars, relaxing spa days or horse-drawn carriage rides, here’s how to kick your romantic side into high gear in Prague.
ENJOY A COCKTAIL
Alright, we’ll be the first to admit it—the best love stories often start with a little alcohol. But we’re not talking drunken hook-ups at the dive bar. Kick off the night with a handcrafted cocktail at Parlour, a classy, hidden, hushed mixology bar just a few steps from Wenceslas Square with a cozy interior, locals-only feel and no menu. If you want to grab a bit beforehand, we recommend Spejle just around the corner that features ala carte items stuck with a skewer (each skewer is 30kc). The restaurant also has a bad-ass Gin & Tonic menu. After all, it's owned by the same owner as Bugsy's. Romance meter says: ❤
HAVE A GLASS OF VINO (OR TWO)
If wine is your thing, you’re in luck. Prague is home to a number of quality wine bars like Vinograf, a tried-and-true venue with three locations and one of the largest selections of Moravian and Bohemian wines in the city (we’re talking up to 350 options). For a more casual setting, head to Na brehu Rhony, a cafe-like spot that focuses on Cotes du Rhone wines and is close to the Vysehrad fortress, another stop on our romance guide. Or, make a night out of your wine tasting with a visit to Bokovka, a hidden gem of a wine bar co-owned by a group of Czech filmmakers, which means it also offers—you guessed it—a private cinema. Romance meter says: ❤
HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGE RIDE
Romance means there’s no limit on the cheesiness factor. Don't be afraid to go all out and look like a tourist. Take ad horse-drawn carriage ride through Old Town (come on, you know you’ve always wanted to). Just be prepared to pony up the cash, no pun intended. Head to the carriages lined up near St. Nicholas Church for a 20-minute ride that’ll set you back 800 to 1,000 CZK. Thankfully, each carriage seats four—make it a double date to half the cost. Romance meter says: ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤
TAKE A SPA DAY
You deserve it. We recommend the Corinthia Hotel, where the upscale Apollo Day Spa on the top floor offers a panoramic view of Prague from an indoor pool. If you’re looking for something more...unusual...head to the beer spa located in Vinohradsky Dum. Yes, this actually does exist—here, you’ll bathe in in a special beer rich with microelements and vitamin B in a treatment known as balneotherapy. Finally, Aqua Palace is the spot for a more family-friendly venture. Drop the kids off at the water park and head to the “sauna world” and spa for a couple’s treatment. Romance meter says: ❤ ❤ ❤
GO TO THE OPERA OR SYMPHONY
You can’t go wrong with a night at the National Theatre, one of the most stunning destinations in the city. The more than 130-year-old venue is home to opera, drama, ballet and laterna magika, a multimedia style that combines digital technologies with live performance. Can’t get a ticket to the National Theatre? No worries. The theatre is also connected to the equallyromantic State Opera, Estates Theatre, Karlin Music Theatre, and New Stage, where laterna magika performances are held. Romance meter says: ❤ ❤
PRAGUE ZOO
Trips to the zoo shouldn’t be reserved for just kids. Especially in Prague, where the city’s zoo has been listed among the best in the world by the likes of Forbes and TripAdvisor. The Prague Zoo hosts nearly 5,000 animals and 650 species, so you won’t run out of things to see. Not only is the zoo a fun destination to marvel at penguins, tigers, giraffes, and other animals, but its location a
few kilometers outside the city makes it a charming countryside getaway. Plus, we bet you didn’t know the zoo was originally intended to mark the marriage of the Crown Prince of Austria and the Princess of Belgium back in 1881. How romantic is that? Romance meter says: ❤
UPGRADE YOUR HOTEL
Keep in mind it's still low season here in Prague. Most hotels are offering amazingly discounted prices this time of year. Treat yourself and upgrade to a loved one to a four star weekend without leaving town. Really, there must be a reason millions of people holiday here each year. Make sure you check the amenities and spa services at the hotel of your choosing. Romance meter says: ❤ ❤ ❤
TAKE A WALK
Going back to basics doesn’t have to be boring. Going for a walk in Prague is a romantic venture in itself, whether you’re hitting the historic Vysehrad fortress, panoramic Letna park, or the charming Naplavka river bank, where you can marvel at the white swans that dot the Vltava. For an extra dose of romance (or two), take a trip to Petrin Hill, where a miniature Eiffel Tower is surrounded by cherry tree gardens and a statue of romantic poet Karel Hynek Mácha. Let’s just say there’s a reason couples line up to kiss in this park on May 1, Prague’s unofficial Love Day. Romance meter says: ❤ ❤ ❤
GET INSPIRED BY ART
Prague may be home to a wealth of interesting museums and exhibits, but why not buy a piece of art together? Our pick is Galerie La Femme, an intimate space on Bilkova street that showcases contemporary Czech art. And just think of how sophisticated you'll look. Romance meter says: ❤
HAVE AN AMAZING DINNER
Don’t let Prague’s blossoming restaurant scene go to waste. Splurge on one of Prague’s many new fine dining options. Gallery 44 is nestled in Old Town and we can't say enough great things about it. The menu is fairly fluid, bringing in new Michelin-quality renowned chefs in every quarter on rotation. Set in a medieval cellar and decorated with art from the esteemed DSC Gallery and perfect lighting, this has to be one of the most romantic hidden spots we know of. You'll want to book now - there are only 44 seats in the restaurant. Book a reservation at 605 177 117. Žofín Restaurant is the newest restaurant offering from the famed Stone Catering (see our Openings page). If you're quick, perhaps you'll be able to get a table here since they just opened. It's hard to have a romantic dinner sometimes if you have kids. But hidden downstairs at the popular restaurant Food Lab, you'll find a variety of things to offer up children's entertainment, without sacrificing your romantic ambiance. There's a baby gym, toys, video game area - and best of all an attendant to keep an eye on your little ones. Meanwhile, upstairs you can enjoy the Valentine's Day Wine Pairing Dinner. It's a five course dinner for 799kc and wine pairings for 500kc, all inspired by Romeo and Juliet. Don't worry, there's no poison at the end. We also discovered one of our favorite new restaurants Avant Garde at Evropská 17 in Praha 6 is doing Valentine's Dinner as well, and we whole-heartedly recommend. The atmosphere is new and contemporary and every meal we've had there has been noteworthy. The six course Valentine's dinner for two people is 2600kc. Check our website at praguevisitor.eu for a list of several local restaurants we recommend for Valentine's Day, including several menus. Romance meter says: ❤ ❤ ❤
SEND FLOWERS
Two rules for ordering flowers in Prague. First, on Valentines - don't wait until the last minute. Secondly - don't just Google it. Photos of flowers on websites are a lot like Tinder profile photos, and nothing says "I didn't try that hard," like having to explain why your bouquet doesn't look like you expected. Our recommendation is Cool Flowers. Trust us, they're the ones your girlriend wants and she' probably already following them on Instagram. And unless you know exactly what she likes, just let the Cool Flowers team suggest something. You can reach them at 775 683 780.
ROMANCE METER:
Thoughtful without overdoing it ❤ Take your relationship up a notch ❤ ❤ Romantic Comedy level ❤❤❤ Don’t forget the engagement ring ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

K THE TWO BROTHERS I N D I A N R E S TA U R A N T “Great find from all the tourist chaos ” - Tripadvisor Review
“Our restaurant descends from an era when celebration of life, culture, luxury, open mindedness, hospitality and happiness all put together were a must. We the two brothers at K have designed the décor of the restaurant in the spirit of what Kapurthala , a European holiday retreat could have looked like. K’s modernity is expressed through its ambience, music and fashionable spirit.”
