Happy November! Summer has finally come to an end as the temperature has dropped and the leaves have changed to their bright orange and red hues. There's even snow in the mountains. We’ve selected the best indoor activities Prague has to offer for children, and their parents, to stay entertained and warm during these next chilly months. There are museums like Gallery of Steel Figures, which boasts giant hand-made sculptures made of recycled scrap metal that kids can climb over and in. The Museum of Senses, Illusion Art Museum and Karel Zeman Museum all provide an interactive platform for kids to learn about and question their senses, while Escape Rooms make the entire family put their logic and puzzle-solving skills to the test. And just because it’s cold out doesn’t mean you have to wait for better weather to experience an active adventure – there’s Aquapalace, a massive water-park complex, or indoor sky-diving and surfing for those feeling particularly extreme. November 11th is Saint Martin’s Day, an annual Czech holiday revolving around the blessing of the first official wine of the new year and a delicious meal of roasted goose, dumplings and cabbage. St. Martin is a beloved Czech patron known for his extremely humble and compassionate character. The origin of the roasted goose tradition is unknown, but legends claim that St. Martin was so humble he hid from adoring fans in a goose pen until the geese made noise and gave him away. Others say

that as he gave a sermon the geese wouldn’t stop interrupting, so they eat goose during the festival as retribution. Either way, the young wine and delicious meals are the perfect way to welcome in the winter, signified by the white horse that St. Martin arrives on. We’ve also featured one of Prague’s oldest and most historical clubs, Roxy. With the end of Communism in 1992 there was an explosion of nightlife and cultural growth in Prague. Roxy was an integral part of this era, beginning as a run-down venue for wild rock concerts and quickly evolving into the cultural epicenter that it is today. The art is site-specific, it is created within the space you view it, in the weeks before the show. This year’s theme is “Echo,” which is explored by the artists through the use of the architecture and character of the rooms their installation resides in, making every piece incredibly unique and innovative. Through this exhibition Pokoje allows young artists to explore non-gallery showcases and the incredible spaces that open up when an artist is not confined to a set, cohesive space. Mind-bending Museums Museum of Senses is one of Prague’s newest museums and already a favorite with locals and visitors alike since opening its doors a year ago. The museum’s unique exhibits connect to different historical aspects of Prague. You can enter a light room and observe an optical illusion of Einstein, a one-time resident of the city, or you can explore the still intact stable room from when the building was an 18th century palace. From optical illusions, to activities testing the five senses and puzzles visitors must figure out, many of the museum’s installations require more than one participant, so kids experience each exhibit together simultaneously. Not only is it entertaining and educational for children, but the psychedelic and mind-boggling nature of the installations entice even adults to question their senses and perceptions! Just up the street in Staroměstské náměstí (Old Town Square) you can also visit IAM Prague, the Illusion Art Museum. Heavy Metal Fun Gallery of Steel Figures boasts almost 100 handmade sculptures pieced together out of all recycled metal materials. Experience some movie magic Fun for young scientific minds Although the majority of this museum has a no-touch policy, the Merkur playroom makes the visit worth it for kids. Merkur is a Czechoslovakian metal construction set used for toy production that even helped Czech chemist Otto Wichterle create the first soft contact lenses. In the playroom, children can use the set and other contraptions to fuel their own imagination and technical skills. The rest of the museum boasts realistic displays of different tools from automotive, scientific, industrial and agricultural fields, including life-size historical cars and planes, old photography equipment and the development of mining technology. Although not interactive, these displays are still engaging for parents and children alike, and on November 17 you can visit the museum for only 50Kč!

This museum lets children explore the ground-breaking work of Czech film-maker, artist, and innovator Karel Zeman through handson installations of his animations and puppet-based films. The playful exhibit highlights the fantastical and whimsical nature of his creations, absorbing visitors into the set pieces so you find yourself in the air on a flying machine, operating a submarine, and even trying out the technical tricks that Zeman is famous for. It’s impossible to tell where the film set ends and reality begins, perfect for fueling your child’s imagination and altering perceptions.

A walk in the Artpark Described as a new concept of edutainment and relaxation, Artpark is the famous Galerie Rudolfinum’s evolving kids play area. With each new installation in the main gallery, Artpark invites children, and adults, to learn about and try the techniques used by the exhibiting artists. Focusing mainly on modern art, kids can explore their imaginations with unconventional materials and altering compositions. Apart from the gallery, Rudolfinum also hosts the Czech Philharmonic and a café in its historic building that dates back to 1885.

Puppets have a long history in the Czech Republic going all the way back to the Middle Ages, paving the way for today’s elaborate puppet shows. The puppets of Theatre Spejble & Hurvínek were created in the 1920s by a Czech professor and quickly became household names throughout the country for their comedic and fantastical depictions of children’s fables and everyday life. The roots of the playful, original musical group known as Hm… run as far back as 1994 when Marek Doubrava, the then guitarist of Tata Bojs, started to rehearse his own songs with his friend Viktor Ekrt. The life of Roxy

Roxy celebrates a long history of keeping Prague Inspired As the doors closed on Communism for Czechoslovakia in 1992, they swung wide open for a newly redefined nightlife in Prague. Venues like the now famous Roxy embodied the country’s new sense of freedom. Roxy may have marked its 26th anniversary last month, but the club’s history goes back much further than that. Beginning in 1927, the building housed an upscale cinema and cultural space for Prague’s high society. Located in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood, WWII brought an abrupt end to the area’s cultural life, and the building was vacant for a few years before being used as a state-run film school during the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. After the Velvet Revolution and the subsequent collapse of the Communist regime the building fell into disrepair and was set to be demolished. However, the history of the building and the artistic aura it still possessed inspired Linhartova Nadace, or the Linhart Foundation, to use it as an impromptu concert venue. Founded in 1987 by a group of architects and artists, the Foundation aims to inspire and support creative projects in order to foster the creation of art among younger generations and the general public as a whole. They created Roxy in 1992 as a run-down venue for underground hardcore and rock concerts. The space then evolved into a cultural epicenter that

hosts the newest contemporaries of all types of music, from alternative and pop, to drum&bass and techno. The opening of the experimental space and café NoD, standing for No Dimension, in 1998 solidified Roxy’s status as one of Prague’s leading nightclubs and cultural hubs. Remembered as an integral part of Prague’s wild nineties, it is now a venue for those passionate about the connection between music and art, and all this relationship fosters. The massive flood of 2002 nearly put Roxy’s artistic renaissance on hold, however, when the venue was devastatingly flooded up to the second floor and forced to close for a month. Three years later the venue was once again shut down, this time by the city, due to noise complaints from residents in the area and the Prague 1 mayor. “Roxy is a legendary place, you can feel the history,” says Daniel Bacho, Roxy’s PR director. “We always try to be one step ahead of the rest, even when you consider communication with our fans, loyalty is key.” This loyalty is what has kept one of Prague’s oldest clubs alive all these years – in both closings, loyal supporters of Roxy’s mission fought for its repairs and re-opening. “Roxy is legendary not only as a venue in itself,” says Bacho. “But also in its attitude to music.” The previous Eastern Bloc countries tend to remain a few years behind when it comes to up-and-coming trends,

including new musical artists. Roxy refuses to adhere to this stereotype. Instead, the Roxy team travels around Europe looking for acts to book that will bring the best of international music scenes right here to Prague. “Events happening in Berlin, London, Barcelona etc. – it’s all happening here as well, which is special for the middle of Europe,” says Bacho. “We invest in new artists and styles. It’s a gamble, but usually it’s worth it.” Just last month Roxy sponsored Belgian drum&bass artist Netsky to perform in a farmers’ market. This pop-up set gained over 250,000 views. It’s risks like this that put Roxy at the forefront of Prague’s alternative arts and nightlife scene. The space itself has been renovated back to its pre-war glory. The Art Deco architecture of the 1920s cinema and its balcony were restored in effort to highlight and respect the history of the space, all while packing it full with new sound and modern culture. While NoD upstairs functions as an exhibition, theatre and lecture space, Roxy also doubles as a gallery with a rotating collection of paintings and sculptures on display throughout the actual concert venue. “Take the venue seriously as not just a club, but also a gallery space” says Bacho. “Walk around, sit for a while, you can feel it.”

Photo by Otta Seemann By Charlotte Spaeth This is a very special time of year for Slovakia and the Czech Republic, as the countries commemorate the anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia and the Velvet Revolution. The end of October concluded the celebration of 100 years since the founding of Czechoslovakia. The collapse of the Hapsburg empire after World War I prompted the rise of a democratic Czechoslovakia under the leadership of the country’s founder and first president, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. Prague celebrated this historic anniversary with a series of free and fun events that took place 42

throughout the last weekend of October, ending with a fireworks display that could be seen from all over the city. The display began at 19:18, the year of Czechoslovakia’s founding, and lasted for ten minutes. Even though the weather was rainy and full of fog, the fireworks still drew an impressive crowd of enthusiastic viewers from around the world. On Saturday October 27th,, a video-mapping presentation was projected on the front of The National Museum to celebrate its reopening after seven years of renovation. The display included significant images from the history of Czechoslovakia throughout the last 100 years,

including the Prague Spring and invasion by the Soviet Union, and photographs of cultural icons. The weekend also included a concert in Old Town Square by Czech and Slovak artists including performances from Karel Gott, rapper Mjik Spirit and more. Gott is considered the most famous artist to come out of Czechoslovakia in the normalization period of the 1960’s. He was one of the only artists of the era accepted by the Communist regime as he rose to great fame across Central, Eastern and Western Europe.
