10 MUST-DO THINGS THIS MONTH | MUSEUM OF SENSES | CALENDAR OF CONCERTS, PLAYS, CLUBBING + RESTAURANT GUIDE FREE FOR NICE PEOPLE
Sweet September It's finally one of our favorite times of year in Prague, when the leaves start to change, there's a bit of nip in the air and the sweaters come out. Czechs say goodbye to summer and welcome the fall by celebrating the harvesting of the wine with vinobranie, or wine festivals. Find one almost every weekend in all parts of the city, along the river, and in the parks. There's also plenty of other events this month, including the Dvořák Music Festival, which is sure to sell out. But don't worry if you're a

classical music fan – there's also FOK, the city of Prague’s official orchestra, whose program begins this month. Their season focuses on composers of the First Republic since this year is the 100th anniversary of Czechoslovakia. On top of the orchestra, there is a massive festival in the Old Town Square commemorating this anniversary. Complete with musical performances, famous Czech politicians and celebrities, and plenty of activities for the kids, this festival has something for everyone. Not
only can you get your fill of sweets in Burčák, the sweet, almost fruity wine featured at the vinobranie, but we also decided to sweeten up the arrival of fall with our favorite Prague pastries. And a hint - none of them are Trdelník. From traditional Czech desserts to unique sweet shops, there’s no shortage of desserts to enjoy in Prague. Enjoy the month and don't forget to like us on facebook and Instagram!

WINE FESTIVALS Czechs celebrate the harvesting of wine in September with an explosion of wine festivals. Their way of saying goodbye to the summer and hello to fall, these wine stalls specialize in Burčák, young wine that tastes sweet and fruity, a bit like lemonade, but still packs an alcoholic punch. There's festivals all month long but our favorites are the Wine Festival at Prague Castle on Saturday September 15th to Sunday the 16th and the Festival jak víno at Saturday, September 29th at Naplavka where you can enjoy your wine along the Vltava.

TOOTS & THE MAYTALS
monday, September 24 It's the first time Toots and The Maytals have hit the road in over three years after lead singer Toots Hibbert was struck and injured by a bottle thrown during a concert in the states. But it takes more than that to keep the 76 year old reggae legend down. Toots and the Maytals impact on Reggae and ska is undeniable - in fact, their 1968 tune “Do the Reggay” was actually the first song to use the word itself. If you're a fan of this style of music, this is your chance to see Reggae Royalty. Lucerna Music Bar Vodičkova 36

Prague’s become known for the Trdelník dessert, it was even recently named as one of the best things to try here, but it’s not even Czech! Here’s our crash course on the best traditional Czech pastries, along with some our favorite amazing sweet shops you can only find in Prague.
Sweet Prague
The Basics: Bábovka (Bundt Cake)
Fluffy vanilla, butter or sponge cake with a little crisp on the outer edges, often has nuts or chocolate added. Best when eaten warmed up or for breakfast with your morning coffee.
Věneček & Větrník
Two different types of choux pastries that are similar, but still unique. Věneček, meaning wreath, is basically a donut sandwich with custard as the meat, glazed with a sugar icing. Větrník, or pinwheel, is a bit larger and usually has vanilla and caramel flavoring with a caramel or chocolate coat. These are a must have on your visit to Prague.
Kremrole (Cream Roll)
Swirling tubes of crispy dough filled with whipped cream or different flavors of meringue. Vaguely similar to cannoli, just as tasty.
Hořické trubičky (Chocolate Tube Rolls)
Thinner than the cream rolls, these skinny wafer tubes are usually filled with cacao and great with a hot chocolate.
Buchty Laskonky
(Buns)
Layers of crunchy meringue cookies sandwiching various flavors of sweet cream filling, often with nuts. The Czech version of macarons, but bigger, flatter and oval.
One of the most traditionally Czech desserts, it even appears in the old Czech fairytales. Small square or oval buns of sweet yeast dough with a variety of fillings from cheese to flavored butters and jams to poppy seeds.
Rakvičky
Linecké
(Little Coffins)
Tiny, hollow dough rectangles, a.k.a. coffins, topped with whipped cream and often fruit. Perfect for a bite-sized sugar rush or breakfast on the go.
Pražský & Moravské koláč (Prague and Moravian “kolach”)
Pastries filled with fruit or cheese, or often mák, poppy seed filling, a favorite of the Czech Republic. Prague kolach tends to be flat and open whereas the Moravian version is more of a filled ball, both equally delicious.
(Linzer Pastries)
Crispy cookies sandwiched together with jam, usually in a circle or heart.
Indián & Špička
A swirl of flavored meringue with a chocolate crust all sitting atop a biscuit cookie. The indián typically has an egg white purée inside whereas the špička is usually filled with cognac.

Cukrář Skála
Lukáš Skála
Lukáš Skála is a well-known name for any Czech local. He’s competed in numerous international competitions, winning the gold medal at the Erfurt Confectionery Olympics, and runs his own factory with the Together Alliance, an established restaurant group here in Prague. Gaining his love of pastries early on from his dad, whose recipes still inspire him today, Skála runs his sweet shops with the desire to be honest and true to the craft, from “a cognac peak, meringue cookie or carrot cake, you will always get a dessert which is prepared from basic ingredients” and made right there in the factory. David Petřík of the Together network explains that at the time there were almost no modern confectionary plants in Prague. Inspired by Skála’s expertise, they “wanted to build a true factory with sugar, whipped cream, butter, fresh fruit” and “top chocolate.” Skála had noticed the same thing during his time in Prague, so he and the Together network aimed to solve this gap in Prague’s confectionary supply and Cukrář Skála, one of the best Czech confectionaries in Prague today, was born. Opened last December, the confectionary plant in the Šporkovský Palace offers a wide range of nearly eighty products and takes orders for custom-made cakes, created through consultations with Skála. The new boutique on Dlouhá focuses more on one specific item, the kremrole, or Czech cream rolls. From the more traditional rolls with whipped egg whites to rolls filled with different fruits and nuts, all are modern twists on old recipes or variations of recipes Skála collected while working abroad. On top of the rolls, customers can also start their day with a breakfast pastry or rejuvenate in the afternoon with a sweet sandwich and lemonade. Both locations have home-made ice cream that’s to die for, but if you want to get a really good look at how the whole process works check out the plant, modelled by architect Václav Červeněk after traditional factories. Composed mostly of stainless steel and tons of glass, visitors can follow confectioners through every step of the process and enjoy their gorgeous desserts in an equally stunning atmosphere. The showcases at the factory are split into different groups, with one focusing solely on more traditional Czech desserts, although Skala adds his own unique flair to each one. These include favorites such as the laskonka, multiple layers of crunchy meringue cookies sandwiching various flavors of sweet cream filling, and the indián, a swirl of flavored meringue with a chocolate crust all sitting atop a biscuit cookie. Check out their website for a beautiful gallery of their individual offerings and what’s readily available each day.

IF Café
Iveta Fabešová
Iveta Fabešová represents not only the current state of Czech confectionaries, but also the future possibilities of the craft in the Czech Republic. After studying French pastry making abroad and finishing as a finalist in the Czech MasterChef competition, Fabešová and her husband opened the first IF Café in 2012, quickly outgrowing the small space and opening a second, larger café around the corner. Due to increasing interest in how the confections were made, Fabešová’s husband built a glass wall in the heart of the café, allowing customers to watch the entire confectionary process from beginning to end. In the past two years they’ve opened two more nationally-acclaimed establishments, one in the dreamy Werichova vila in Kampa and one conveniently located near Wenceslas Square. This shop, like the location on Tylovo náměstí, was built to allow customers to watch the confectioners at work and boasts different displays throughout the café of the various vibrant desserts. A “dream come true” for Fabešová, the cafés also serve as a showroom for her husband’s company which consults with confectionaries on interior design and production technology, among other aspects of the business. Fabešová believes that “beauty attracts people, but only quality brings them back” and her cafés certainly showcase this belief. Her confectionaries are bright and beautiful, just like her gorgeous desserts, which are mostly Czech classics with a French twist. These include favorites such as the koláč, větrník, and kremrole, plus her signature Lemon pastry that looks exactly like the real fruit but is made of whipped lemon puree ganache, fresh lemon filler and maracuja. Fabešová strives to “not only produce the finest quality pastries, but also contribute to the evolution of the pastry field” in order to advance the confectionary culture in Prague, in which interest is rapidly expanding. Fabešová still attends master classes abroad, which have now inspired her to launch the soon-to-be-opened IPPA, or International Prague Pastry Academy, located in the beautiful Art Deco Rosetta Palace. With courses for both children and adults, Fabešová has recruited some of the most well-respected pastry chefs, chocolatiers, and ice cream masters from around the world in hopes of helping others learn about the confectionary world without having to go abroad. Check out her website for information on her multiple pastry cookbooks and IPPA courses, and visit her shops to watch the confectioners at work in cafés made entirely of natural materials.

Designum Café Marcela Benešová may not be a celebrity chef (yet), but the display of her fresh and delicious work is easily the most Instagrammed window display on the picturesque Nerudova Street in front of the castle. Benešová says she never planned on becoming a professional baker, but armed with her mother's recipes and an opportunity at Designum Café (located at Asten Hotels Boutique Golden Key), Benešová's typical Czech baking was an instant hit, with the café becoming a stop along the way for visitors looking for authentic and traditional Czech baked goods.
Marcela Benešová
Benešová makes everything from Quart Bundt Cake, to Lime Cupcakes and Blueberry Pie, all of it as delicious as it is beautiful. While some of her pastries have remained old family recipes, Benešová also looks for inspiration in friends and other cookbooks, adding her own signature twist to each creation. While describing her favorite pastry to make, her Rebarborový koláč, or Rhubarb cake, Benešová says that the best part of baking is “making other people happy with my food” and that one of the brightest parts of her day is walking into the café and finding “even the baristas eating my sweets, too.” After repeatedly getting requests for recipes from customers, Benešová and Golden Key Hotel’s owner, Jiří Gajdošík, and manager, Petra Janoušková, put together a beautiful cookbook, Baked with Love, designed by Jakub Pešák. With recipes written in Czech, English, and German, Benešová hopes that her countless customers from many different countries will be able to “have a part of the Czech Republic and the café with them in their own home, wherever they are in the world.” She even plans on putting up a map in the café of every place her recipes have found a new home in, to remind her how baking has brought happiness to and been of use for others from all around the world. Even with all this international love, Benešová’s first and most valuable customers are her two daughters, without whom she would never have been able to perfect her baking style and who couldn’t be prouder of their newly-authored mom. The café, located on Nerudova in front of the castle, is the perfect rest-stop on your way up or down the hill to the castle. Boasting more than just Benešová’s pastries, you can enjoy an iced latte, milkshake, or sandwich while appreciating the decor of Designum, which changes every few months when Pešák completely redesigns the menus, decorations, and even the pillow duvets. The baristas and constant flow of customers add to the cheerful atmosphere. Our personal favorites to order are Benešová’s Quark Bundt cake and the head barista Bete’s flavored lemonades.

A few more of our favorites... Here’s a few more of our favorite sweet shops where we love popping in for a bit of sweetness. But besides these amazing places, also be on the lookout for old style Cukrárna shops for a delicious treat on the go. Many of these traditional bakeries still have a lingering communist feel and carry staple pastries, coffee, and occasionally ice cream.
Choco Loves Coffee
Jugoslávská 662/27, 120 00 Praha 2-Vinohrady Not your average chocolatery, Choco Loves Coffee aims to connect the realms of coffee and chocolate. They offer one of Prague’s largest selection of luxury chocolates, plus upscale teas and hand-made pralines. Not only can you relax in the shop getting your fix of sugar and sweets, you can also find the perfect gifts for family and friends back home. On top of chocolates and coffee, Choco offers a variety of fresh home-made cakes and pastries, baked daily with all fresh ingredients based both on the confectioners’ old family recipes and recipes from around the world. Choco also features Angelato’s gourmet ice cream, with flavors ranging from pumpkin and parmesan, to lavender and various fruits. The café itself is small and cozy with their various products decorating the walls throughout and occasional live music. Stop in and enjoy one of the best milkshakes in Prague or a glass of wine with your dessert.
Myšák
Vodičkova 710/31, New Town Praha 1 One of the most historical sweet shops in Prague, the original Cukrárna Myšák was opened in the early 1900s by František Myšák. It was a staple hangout for high society Czech celebrities; even T. G. Masaryk, the first president of Czechoslovakia, had his 80th birthday cake made there. Last fall the Ambiente restaurant group brought the family’s legacy back to life, rebuilding the café based off pictures of its original design so customers can experience the ambience of a café from the First Republic. The café’s specialties are still traditional pastries and desserts, made according to old Czech recipes and with the highest quality of ingredients that Myšák himself would approve of. Pastries range from meringue pastry rolls, to cognac peaks, tartlets and cakes. Customers can enjoy their sweets in the bright and welcoming café that exudes the old-time charm of the First Republic’s interior design. Even the dishes you eat off of are inspired by the early-mid 20th century.
Café Savoy
Vítězná 124/5, Malá Strana Praha 5 Another café invoking the First Republic era, Café Savoy is known for its Neo-Renaissance-esque high ceilings complete with chandeliers, shelves of wine bottles lining the walls and a staircase adorned with Art Nouveau embellishments. Much like Café Myšák, the space has had a turbulent history with the Communist Regime closing the previous café and turning the space into different kinds of shops over the years. The Ambiente restaurant group finally filled the location with Savoy in the early 2000s, renovating the ceiling back to its former glory and creating the café we know and love today. Most famous for its filling breakfasts and upscale meals, its confectionary offerings are just as delicious. Savoy offers everything from cakes and pies to the more traditional tarts and indiáns and are widely known to have the best vetrníks in Prague. The most lavish of our sweet shop suggestions, the deliciousness of the pastries and the ambience of the interior is more than worth it.
Café Slavia
Smetanovo nábřeží 1012/2, New Town Praha 1 One of Prague’s most famous cafés, Café Slavia has always been a haven for Prague’s artists, writers, actors and musicians, including Václav Havel, one of the Czech Republic’s most revered playwriters and essayists, and the last president of Czechoslovakia. Occupying a beautiful location, directly across from the National Theatre and the Vltava River, its Art Deco interior is lined with ceiling to floor windows perfect for watching the surrounding views and passersby while you enjoy your dessert. Going through similar turbulent times as the other First Republic cafés, Café Slavia managed to pull through with the support of its loyal fanbase and re-open in the 90s. Along with a full menu, Slavia has everything from chocolates and strudels to traditional cakes and the Czech rakvičky, hollow rectangle pastries topped with cream. Open early and late into the night, come here to enjoy delicious Czech desserts while pondering Czechoslovakia’s fight for intellectual freedom, all with a gorgeous riverside view.
Oh Deer Bakery
Bělehradská 1019/62, Vinohrady Praha 2 This hipster haven in Vinohrady specializes in Croblihy, the Czech word for cronuts, or croissant donuts. Also available at Puesto Café in Novy Smíchov, Oh Deer brought these delicious new inventions to Prague and became so popular they quickly had to expand their location. Unlike a traditional donut made of flour and yeast, cronuts are made of croissants but fried and shaped like a regular donut and take about three days to produce correctly. The owner, Lukáš Vašek, named the bakery after his childhood nickname and decorated the bakery accordingly with a stuffed deer head as the centerpiece of the shop. He recognized the booming interest in specialized pastries that Prague is experiencing right now, opening his shop early last year and quickly becoming a favorite of locals and visitors alike. Go early for a guaranteed Croblihy, they often sell out! 20

Tram and Metro Map
Public Transport Tips:
First let people off, before you get on. If someone elderly gets on, give up your seat. It’s not just curtious, it’s expected here. To fit in on the metro and trams wear your headphones. If you don’t have headphones, then play with your phone instead, or read a book or this magazine. If you’ve been drinking, don’t act like an idiot, even with friends.
Late Night: After midnight, trams switch to “Night Service”, which includes a whole new schedule that can be a bit confusing - especially if you’ve had a few drinks. Our recommendation - call an Uber or Liftago or use a taxi to get to your destination.

PRAGUE
Cocktail guide The best cocktail bars in Prague (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).
Le Valmont 9)
Uhelný trh 414/9, Praha 1 www.levalmont.cz The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Miloš Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Reservations are all but required, since the 100-capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly. +420 224 267 266 for Reservations.
Black Angel's 8#
Staroměstské nám. 29, Praha 1 www.blackangels.cz Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Old Town astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. With high cellar ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. +420 224 213 807 for Reservations.
Tretter's 8@
V kolkovně 3, Praha 1 www.tretters.cz The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years, so it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. +420 224 811 165 for Reservations
Parlour 8$
Krakovská 15, Praha 1 www.parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. +420 777 200 015 for Reservations.
Mánesova 64, Praha 2 and Týnská 19, Praha 1 www.barandbooks.cz Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the more casual in Mánesova and slightly more formal in Týnská). The bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings and of course books (though mostly for visual aesthetics). Reservations online.
Bonvivant's CTC 8&
Bartolomějská 305, Praha 1 www.bonvivantsprague.com Bonvivant's CTC isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and has a cool 1950’s feel with mid-century wood furnishings, a pressed tin ceiling and a checkered floor. Bartenders are a virtual encyclopedia of drink possibilities and suggestions based on your tastes. +420 775 331 862 for Reservations.
Bugsy's 9%
Pařížská 1068/10, Praha 1 www.bugsysbar.cz Bugsy’s is another bar with a great history, popping up just after the Velvet Revolution. Their one constant has been their attention to detail and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands in stock, as well as over 90 single malt whiskeys and 100 types of rum. +420 224 810 287 for Reservations.
Malá Štupartská 3, Praha 1 www.industryprague.com Prague's newest venue is a London style club with shisha and tobacco and the highest quality sound systems playing the newest hip hop. Located right in the center of Prague, its worth a visit for sure! +420 736 606 612 for Reservations.
V kolkovně 920/5, Praha 1 www.lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with the 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Mucha-inspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. A Surreal afternoon in the
Museum of Senses By Rebecca Humphries There’s no shortage of museums to visit in Prague, but not all museums are created equal. One of Prague’s newest museums is also already proving to be one of its most popular, ranking an incredible 6th out of 334 museums on TripAdvisor. The Museum of Senses has become a favorite with locals and tourists alike since opening its doors last November. Its rooms have even been graced by Czech celebrities and there’s certainly no shortage of visitors on a daily basis. We wanted to see what all the fuss was about, so we went to check it out. Despite being part of a chain (there’s partner museums in Bucharest and Split) the museum remains individualized with activities that were created in the team’s own garages interspersed with larger exhibits that were meticulously designed using computer programs. While all three museums share a common theme, the unique elements are directly connected to their home city. Here in Prague you can enter a light room, reminiscent of Prague’s famous black light theater, and observe an optical illusion of Einstein, a famous one-time resident of the city, whose emotions change within the same picture depending on your viewing position. His famous words, ‘Reality is merely an illusion’ are emblazoned on the wall as a reminder of the museum’s purpose. Perfectly located in the city center, just off Prague’s main square, it’s easy to get to and likely you’ll stumble upon it while wandering around the city. The building it resides in could have been a museum in itself – it’s an old 18th-century palace and the stable room remains intact, with original woodwork and stone troughs. The room’s perspective exhibition remains connected to the building’s history, with 2D images of horses that you can appear to interact with on a 3D scale. This space also doubles as an event or party room if you’re looking for somewhere different to celebrate a special occasion. The museum is completely interactive so it’s easy to see why the Museum of Senses was an instant hit with Czech families. It offers a unique experience that breaks away from the traditional and expected in a museum, and there are a range of optical illusions and activities to excite everyone from the youngest to the oldest. One of the installations tests all five of your senses, showing you which ones are your most dominant. You’ll be surprised by the puzzles that flummox you and those you can complete with ease! With so many illusions reliant on multiple participants, it’s a great place for a family day out and the perfect spot for a
memorable date, but if you’re traveling solo be sure to make some friends before you visit! Information is available in five languages so it’s unlikely you’ll struggle to grasp the concepts - and most speak for themselves just by the experiences - including our favourite - laying on a bed of nails. Overall the museum is an entertaining and educational place to spend a couple hours. The kids will be extremely entertained, and the trippy exhibits will make adults feel like they’ve been on a beer tour without the liver damage or hangover. Well worth the price, visit the museum when you need a break from the heat and desire endless mind-boggling experiences

THE FINAL SHOT Every month, we let you have a chance to give us your best Prague photo for our last page. If you'd like to submit your photo, post it on Instagram or Twitter and Tag us @praguevisitor.
Photo used with permission of Mark Hamill
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away... we all wanted to be Luke Skywalker from the Star Wars films. For many of us who were children of the 70's, Mark Hamill in the role of Skywalker eclipsed sports figures, musicians, and other fictional characters as our first childhood hero. So, you can imagine when Hamill showed up on Twitter announcing that he and his 46
beloved dog Millie were in fact in Prague, we were beyond excited. And while many thought it was merely a break for Hamill and his four legged friend, a few days later it was announced that Hamill was joining the cast of the History Channel's production Knightfall for their second season and would be in Prague for a somewhat extended period.
THE PRAGUE VISITOR | September 2018
