PRAGUE
Here in Prague, we’re lucky enough to have a world class zoo that’s loved by visitors from all corners of the globe. The zoo is popular with we all of us mere mortals and celebrities alike, with the JoliePitt cohort famously spending a day there during their 2007 trip to Prague. It’s an enormous zoo, with plenty to do for kids and adults alike. It’s such a highly admired attraction that Prague Zoo was ranked the fifth best zoo in the world according to TripAdvisor, but what makes this zoo stand out compared with hundreds of others across the globe? So what makes our Zoo so great? Here's just a few of our thoughts...
PRAGUE Zoo
What's so great about the 5th Best Zoo in the World?
Getting there
The Price Whether we have money to spare or not, everyone loves a good bargain. Let’s get right to it - Prague Zoo is ridiculously cheap. A family of four (two adults and two children) can enjoy a day at the zoo for just 600czk. That’s less than 25 euros or 30 dollars for four people for the entire day! Adults can enjoy a day out for just 200czk and children, students and seniors can enter for 150czk. Even better, kids under three-years-old can enter for free. Of course, there are a few optional extras you can purchase throughout the day, but with such a low admission cost you can say yes to these extras without the fear that you’re breaking the bank, or you can simply enjoy a super cheap day out.
This category covers two things: getting to the zoo and how wheelchair and pushchair friendly it is once you’re there. Getting to the zoo couldn’t be easier or, once again, cheaper. The zoo is far enough from the center to give the animals plenty of space with room for expansion, but close enough that is can be easily accessed by public transport. One of Prague’s biggest plus points is how affordable and frequent public transport is. We recommend buying a 32czk ticket which lasts for 90 minutes. With this ticket, you can take the Metro C to Nádraží Holešovice from the center and catch bus 112 directly to the zoo’s entrance. With such easy access by public transport, you’ll usually find plenty of parking space if you decide to drive and there are a bunch of alternative ways to get there. On the Zoo’s website they provide details of how to visit by bus, bike, steamboat and ferry. Once you’re there, you shouldn’t encounter many problems if you’re in a wheelchair or bring a buggy. If there’s one thing Prague often falls down on, it’s accessibility. The cobbled streets and communist architecture don’t usually make things easy for those with accessibility needs, but this is something Prague Zoo seems to have gotten right. A number of TripAdvisor reviewers mention disability access as a plus for their visit, but be warned, there are a LOT of hills to tackle when making your way around.
August 2018 | THE PRAGUE VISITOR
13
THE NUMBERS
58 Hectares The zoo covers an expanse of 58 hectares (143 acres) which means plenty of space for all of the animals to live comfortably and that you'll definitely get your steps in on whichever day you visit. Animals are grouped by habitat into 12 pavilions and more than 150 exhibits which helps parents and teachers clearly explain habitats and ecology to children.
87 Years The history of Prague Zoo goes all the way back to the year 1881, when, on the occasion of the wedding of Crown Prince Rudolf and Princess Stephanie of Belgium, Count Sweerts-Sporck published an open letter in the newspapers calling for the establishment of a zoological garden in Prague. However, in true Czech beuraucractic style, the zoo wasn't actually opened until1931.
681 Species Lions, Tigers, Bears, oh my! As of December 2015, Prague Zoo served as a home for 681 species of animals. That's a lot of cute to endure. Luckily the zoo is open from 9am-9pm every day so you've got plenty of time to visit them all, but be aware that some exhibits start closing at 7 pm so prioritize your favorites in the last few hours.
Animal Welfare The biggest argument anyone ever makes against zoos stems from a concern for animal welfare. However, our local zoo works hard to adhere to the highest welfare standards and are fighting tirelessly on the front lines of animal conservation to protect and preserve endangered species. The zoo is home to 144 species of endangered animals from the vulnerable to those that are extinct in the wild. In addition to caring for animals at the zoo, the conservation teamwork to ensure animals are protected and surviving in the wild. One major example of the work that they do is with Przewalski’s Horse which was extinct in the wild until the Prague Zoo conservation team released animals bred at the zoo back into their natural habitat in Mongolia.
Additional Services and Facilities In addition to the numerous animals you can visit at Prague Zoo, there are plenty of other things to be getting on with. The zoo has plenty of places to eat and drink, with an enormous outdoor playground at their Gulab restaurant and others scattered around the site. Children can also play with animals at the children’s zoo or take pony rides. There are also lots of other fun ways to get around such as the steamboat and cable car.
Okay, so whats the down side? Okay, so you know what TripAdvisor is like, it's rare that people only have nice things to say. We noticed a few things mentioned more than once - and even though we don't think they're a big deal, it's worth bringing them to your attention.
Early closing - This one really got people's goat. As mentioned previously, some of the zoo's exhibits start closing at 7 pm despite the zoo being open until 9 pm. It's a pretty smart move on the zoo's part, driving traffic to the gift shop and restaurants for the last couple of hours but we know it's not ideal. If you know in advance, you can plan your day accordingly and it's not such a big deal.
Lack of English Information - This one's frustrating but constantly improving. Some of the information about the animals and some leaflets are only available in Czech. It makes things confusing at times but is something the zoo is constantly working to improve so by the time of your visit, you may not even notice it as an issue.
Hills, hills, hills - A lot of people were unhappy about the number of hills you have to endure to make your way around the zoo but really, this one's a matter of perspective. Yes, hills are tiring but they also mean there can be better habitats created for some of the animals and just think about those bootys!

A FEW OF THE LOCAL
s t n e d i s Re The Love Birds -
Miracle Baby-
We’re often told that opposites attract, and Pippin and Pind’a prove this is certainly true for penguins. The energetic and clumsy Pippin makes friends with humans easily given his genial and curious nature, but he didn’t find it so easy to find a mate. His clumsiness left him open to a little teasing by the other penguins until he met bashful and cautious Pind’a. Through diligently bringing her rocks and sticks, Pippin was able to win Pinda’s’ heart and now the pair are mated for life and inseparable.
The Miracle Baby - Ajabu In 2016, Prague Zoo celebrated the birth of Ajabu, the western lowland gorilla. While we all love to see a cute baby animal, Ajabu’s birth excited the world for a different reason. After many years of miscarriages and heartbreak, his mother Shinda was considered infertile and the zoo team hadn’t even realized she was pregnant until Ajabu was ready to say hello to the world. The now two-year-old Ajabu and his parents can be seen in the Gorilla House at Prague Zoo.
Pippin and Pind’a
The Tricksters-
Tom and Berta Although polar bears originate in the arctic circle, this pair were both born and raised here in the Czech Republic. When she was younger, Berta’s energetic and playful nature led the zookeepers to believe she was a boy and she was even named Albert! As she got older, she mellowed out but the enclosure didn’t lack a playful presence for long with Tom being brought to the zoo from Brno. Tom is a bit of a prankster and loves to play tricks on the zookeepers, children and dogs. If you’re startled by a huge bear jumping from the water directly in front of you, you’ll know you’ve met Tom.
Ajubu
The Veterans -
Radja and Seeta This pair of great Indian hornbills are the oldest of their kind in Prague, having been brought to the zoo thirty and twenty-six years ago respectively. Their longstanding relationship has been turbulent and at one point the pair were even separated and rematched for four years. Despite being drawn back together, the couple are still yet to raise their first hatchling. Great Indian hornbills can still reproduce in their thirties so we’re rooting for them to stay strong as a couple and start a family.
The New Blood -
Jamvan, Ginni and Suchi These three beautiful Asiatic lions are not only important to the zoo, but to the survival of their entire species. Asiatic lions exist in the wild in just one state in Indian, and European conservation effort have been difficult with no new lions from India being successfully introduced to western zoos in twenty years. Jamvan, Ginni and Suchi give hope to the entire western line of Asiatic lions and all those working to protect this endangered species.
The Odd Couple -
Antonio and Eberhard Antonio and Eberhard may both be Galapagos tortoises, but that’s about all they have in common. The enormous Eberhard is a gentle giant. This 237kg Santa-Cruz Galapagos tortoise is the largest in the enclosure but likes to stay out of trouble. In contrast, his roommate Antonio is full of fire. The Pinzon Galapagos tortoise is just a third of the weight of his friend but believes he’s a war machine. Although he’s one of the rarest animals at the zoo, Antonio’s fighting spirit demonstrates the hardiness of his species… or does it just demonstrate little man syndrome?

Tram and Metro Map
Public Transport Tips:
First let people off, before you get on. If someone elderly gets on, give up your seat. It’s not just curtious, it’s expected here. To fit in on the metro and trams wear your headphones. If you don’t have headphones, then play with your phone instead, or read a book or this magazine. If you’ve been drinking, don’t act like an idiot, even with friends.
Late Night: After midnight, trams switch to “Night Service”, which includes a whole new schedule that can be a bit confusing - especially if you’ve had a few drinks. Our recommendation - call an Uber or Liftago or use a taxi to get to your destination.
Manifesto Market PRague's Uncontainably cool new Spot You might say not-for-profit urban re-developer ReSite has a gift for making something out of nothing - especially when it comes to Prague's newest urban hotspot - Manifesto Market. Located on what was once a dirtpile patch of unused and undesirable land, Manifesto Market is constructed of twenty-seven converted transport containers which make up the outdoor marketplace. Inside each container, you'll find a variety of satellite locations for some of Prague's hippest street food vendors, restaurants, bistros, coffee shops, art galleries, and more. ReSite says the market was originally inspired by the London Boxpark and the TimeOut Market in Lisbon with their familial atmosphere and temporary cultural setting. Radka Ondrackova, the Director of Communications and Creative Captain for the project, describes Manifesto as, “a living organism, - we observe, we learn, we improve, we listen.” The converted shipping container architecture of Manifesto provides a stark contrast to the surrounding traditional architecture which Prague is known for. But it's a contrast that works, with Manifesto finding great success in it's first few months of operation. But it's not just the architecture that's forward thinking. Manifesto Market isn't just leaving behind old ideas of traditional urban development - they're also telling their patrons to leave behind their
cash. Adopting the concept of being cashless, only debit and credit cards are accepted as a form of payment. The market is also dog friendly and encourages people to be both kind and aware of the environment by not providing any plastic and ensuring that recycling is a top priority. Beyond the undeniable attraction of an outdoor venue on these warm August days, many patrons seem to love that the market's offers up so many options for food and beverage - answering that age-old couple delimma of "what do you want for dinner?" Manifesto Market isn't just about being an epicenter of culinary coolness - it's also fastly become a hub for special events which center around music, film, art, design. For a full schedule of events, you can visit their the Manifesto Market website (www. manifesto.city). ReSite says the goal of the marketplace is to continue to develop a place where people from all over Prague, other countries, families, visitors, and tourists will be able to find a sense of community and thrive in the food, music, art, design, and fun that is all a part of the market. Manifesto provides an unusual cultural and culinary experience, as well as a space for entertainment and education. Events vary from DJs, to film showings, to workshops, and art galleries, with the schedule for every different event on their website. “By combining high-quality street food and
cultural program, Manifesto succeeded to revive a forgotten corner in the very center of Prague, and to bridge a busy but disconnected neighborhood,” Ondrackova says about the market and its noble mission. Urban revitalization aside, we’re just here for the food and beer. Manifesto is open everyday from 8 am until 22 pm. Find it's location on our map in the center of the magazine. You can find Manifesto in the centre of Prague in between Florenc Station and Masarykovo nádraží (Masaryk Railway Station). Nex to the highway and under the billboards.

PRAGUE
Cocktail guide The best cocktail bars in Prague (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).
Tretter's
V kolkovne 3, Praha 1 www.tretters.cz The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years. So it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. Number 82 on the map. +420 224 811 165 for Reservations
Parlour
Krakovská 15, Praha 1 www.parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. Number 84 on the map. +420 777 200 015 for Reservations.
L'Fleur
V Kolkovně 920/5, 1, Praha www.lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Mucha-inspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which your bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list. Number 94 on the map. +420 734 255 665 for Reservations
Le Valmont
Hemingway's
California Republic
www.levalmont.cz The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Milos Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Reservations are all but required, since the 100-capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly. Number 90 on the map. +420 224 267 266 for Reservations.
www.hemingwaybar.cz Chances are, if you’ve asked around, you’ve already been recommended to Hemingway’s Bar. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. So reservations are recommended. Number 97 on the map. +420 773 974 764 for Reservations.
www.california-republic.cz The California Republic Bar is a splash of Californian spirit in the center of Prague. Stand up Comedy night every Second Sunday of the month. Karaoke every Monday night. Find it on our map at Number 96.
Uhelný trh 414/9, Praha 1
Black Angel's
Staroměstské nám. 29, Praha 1 www.blackangels.cz Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Old Town astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. With high cellar ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. +420 224 213 807 for Reservations.
Bar and Books
Manesova 64, Praha 2 and Týnská 19, Praha 1 Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the more casual in Manisova and slightly more formal in Týnská). The bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (though mostly for visual aesthetics). Number 85 and 86 on the map.
Bonvivant's CTC
Bartolomějská 305, P1 Bonvivant's CTC isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and has a cool 1950’s feel with mid-century wood furnishings, a pressed tin ceiling and a checkered floor. Bartenders are a virtual encyclopedia of drink possibilities and suggestions based on your tastes. +420 775 331 862 for Reservations.
Bugsy's
Pařížská 1068/10, Praha 1
Anonymous Bar
Michalská 12, Praha 1 www.anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile. The bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender your likes and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the secret drink menu printed in UV ink and read with a small blacklight. Reservations are taken only until 9pm. Number 93 on the map. +420 608 280 069 for Reservations.
Karolíny Světlé 26, Praha 1
Belgická 275/24, Praha 2-Vinohrady
Cash Only Bar Liliova 3, Prague 1
www.cashonlybar.cz Just around the corner from its older sibling Hemingway’s, this little gem is making its own name with cocktails like Pin-Up Martini, made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne. It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and, you guessed it—the bar doesn’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way, they do serve amazing hot dogs. Number 89 on the map. No Reservations.
Crazy Daisy
Václavské nám. 4, Praha 1 www.crazydaisy.cz Somewhat hidden at the bottom of Wenceslas Square, this one of our favourite new hotspots. First republic style interior, bar staff dressed the part and videomapping on the walls that pushes reality - it feels like you're in The Great Gatsby. !Number 99 on the map. +420 273 130 486 for Reservations.
Oblaca
Žižkov Television Tower, Praha 3 www.oblaca.cz High atop the Žižkov Television Tower, Oblaca is making better cocktails through science. Oblaca’s Aleš J. Števlík, genius mixologist gone mad scientist (maybe that explains the drink served in a test tube). 92 on the map. + 420 210 320 086
www.bugsysbar.cz Bugsy’s is another bar with a great history, popping up just after the Velvet Revolution. Their one constant has been their attention to detail and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands in stock, as well as over 90 single malt whiskeys and 100 types of rum. Number 95 on the map. +420 224 810 287 For Reservations.
La Bodeguita del Medio
Industry
Alchemist Bar
Malá Štupartská 3, 110 00 Staré Město www.industryprague.com Prague's newest venue is a London style club with shisha and tobacco and the highest quality sound systems playing the newest hip hop. Located right in the center of Prague, its worth a visit for sure! Number 77 on the map.
Kaprova 19/5, Praha 1
www.labodeguitadelmedio.cz With it's colonial-style interior straight from Old Havana, La Bodeguita is on point. In addition to great food, bar staff have perfected their craft with regional drinks, from the Cuba Libre to the Mojito. Number 97 on the map. +420 224 813 922 for Reservations.
Provaznická 1, Praha 1 www.thealchemistbar.cz A relative newcomer on the scene, Achemist is turning out quality prohibition style drinks in their ornate classicly decorated location at the bottom of Wenclases Square. Number 98 on the map. +420 251 510 940 for Reservations.
Woodhouse Vinohradská 32
www.wood-house.cz Signature cocktails meets a variey of bespoke sishas. The atmosphere is crafted to calm you; the smell of fresh wood, a wooden house surrounded by trees, a heated shining sun. Woodhouse is a great place to spend an evening with friends or make new ones. Find them on the map at Number 88.
Cohiba Atmosphere
Kaprova 19/5, 110 00 Staré Město www.cohibaatmosphere.cz Referred to as the Havana of Prague, this cigar club more than just premium cigars. Refined cocktails, fine wine quality spirits are all served in this classy setting. The sleek design of the bar, combined with the top-notch service of the bartenders makes this the perfect spot for a quality drink. Find them on the map at Number 81.
Point Gallery
Betlémské nám. 169/5a, Staré Město www.pointgallery.cz The Point has become one of our new favorite go-to spots. Comfortable casual, it's an interesting concept that successfully manages to combine a coffee shop, a bar, and an exhibition space under one roof. Like most cool things, it's slightly hidden so you may have to look for it. Point cool, modern, and artistic at the same time. Oh yes, their fair prices make this places even better! Number 76.
Iluze Bar
Vladislavova 1389/8, 110 00 Nové Město Hidden Gem in the City Centre popular with locals and tourists as well. Great atmosphere, affordable drinks and friendly service make Iluze Bar a place to be! The Flaming Lamborghini is a must! Find them at Number 78.
Green Devil's Absinth Bar Týn 637/7, 110 00 Staré Město

South African hip hop group consisting of rappers Ninja and Yolandi Visse, formed in Cape Town in 2008. Their image revolves around the South African counterculture movement known as zef and has incorporated work by other artists associated with the movement, such as photographer Roger Ballen. Their unique style is exemplified by their music videos and involves the alternating interplay between Yolandi’s high-pitched rhymes and Ninja’s swagger, both spoken with their characteristic accents. Noam Chomsky and wife Valeria Wasserman in Prague With it's long history, Prague has always been graced by great minds who have come to gain inspiration from the city and it’s irresistible atmosphere and charm. This past month famed American linguist, Professor Noam Chomsky and his wife, Valeria Wasserman were seen enjoying Prague. Professor Chomsky is most celebrated and well-known for his contribution to the study of language and the initiation of what is referred to as the “cognitive revolution.” He is also often called “the father of modern linguistics.” Earning his doctorate in 1955 from Harvard University, he developed the theory of transformational grammar that changed people’s viewpoint within his field and 46

around the world. Chomsky has always been adamant about social reform and justice within the American political system, and never shied back from voicing his sometimes controversial opinions. In fact, as a result of his anti-war activism during the Vietnam War, US President Nixon placed Chomsky on his ‘Enemies List’ in fear of the possible repercussions of his influential standing within society. Even since his first book in 1968 and over a dozen since, Chomsky continues to write, with his latest book release past February. Chomsky takes advantage of these works to express his political
views and desires for the American system to become less corrupt and instead be more suitable and helpful for the citizens who truly need it. His wife Valéria loves Dvorak and Kafka, since childhood. Classical music was a constant in her home and Dvorak became one of her favorite composers. Kafka's work was, as well, in the family's library and it didn't take long for her to discover Metamorphosis, among the others. Later, Valéria studied Literature at University, focused on Brazilian and Portuguese literature. When Noam and Valéria visit Prague, Noam likes to keep the city for themselves.
