THINGS OUR TOP PICKS OF THINGS TO DO this month
Guns N' ROses Tuesday, July 4
We can't think of a more fitting day to go and see a concert of the reunited Guns N' Roses than American Independence Day. The Los Angeles band is your classic "love and hate" rock and roll story. Following the break-up of the original line-up and years of disagreement between singer Axl Rose and guitarist Slash, the two have made amends and rejoined forces. We're sure they'll be belting out the classics like "Welcome to the Jungle", "Sweet Child of Mine", and "November Rain". We're hoping there will be a few surprises as well. AC/DC's Angus Young joining the band on stage in Germany. By the way, they don't look as young now as they did pictured here, but let's face it, we dont either. MYSTIC SK8 CUP 2017 Through sunday, July 2 This year’s MSC will be the largest skateboarding event in Europe. The contest will take place June 30 – July 2 on Stvanice Island in Prague, where the world’s best skaters will compete for $30,000 USD prize money in Streetstyle and Bowl. There's also great music as well from Madball and Delinquent Habits and food and drink of course. Where: Stvanice Island For more information, www.mysticsk8cup.cz

Náplavka mid-week wednesdays, 8am - 4pm
There's not much to complain about when it comes to our favorite Saturday farmer's market in Prague, except that sometimes it's just too damn crowded. Organizers heard the need, and for those of us who are ready for a mid-week shop, or just don't like the crowds, they've opened up on Wednesdays to give us what we want... fresh fruits, vegetables, mats, cheeses, sausages, spices, wines and more. Cirk La Putyka 's Batacchio is inspired by the nostagia of old nomadic theater companies, which in their performances freely combined all sorts of human skills and creations. Seven acrobats and actors will perform an unusual combination of new circus disciplines with those that were thought once forgotten. Where: Jatka78 Bubenské nábřeží 306/13, Praha 7

THE PRAGUE VISITOR | July 2017
Many travelers these days want a local experience when visiting a new place. And while your lack of the language can be a dead giveaway, these tips can help you blend into the crowd without having to open your mouth.
Looking Like a Local
Get a
Dog
Czechs have one of the highest dog-ownership rates in all of Europe, and we're not talking about wild street dogs. Czech canines are well trained and obedient. You're likely to find them in most parks, on trams and trains, and even in offices or restaurants. In fact, many servers are more likely to offer your dog a free bowl of water than a free glass to their customers.
Carry a Backpack
While Americans, for example, may associate backpacks (or "rucksacks" for our British friends) with schoolchildren, they are practically part of a Czech uniform. You could attribute this accessory to a love of camping and outdoor activities, which is often true, but a backpack is equally likely to be used to simply carry groceries home from the supermarket.
Thumbs Up Watch your fingers if you want to indicate how many of something you'd like to order. Czechs count with their thumbs first, using their thumb and first finger for two, thumb and two fingers for three, etc. So yes, that scene in the film Inglourious Basterds, when an American spy is found out by raising his first two fingers to order two whiskeys, is 100% accurate.
Dress for the Part If you see a cyclist pass you on the street in a helmet and matching logo-covered spandex, don't assume they're training for a professional race. They may just be on their way home from work. Czechs often dress head-to-toe for whatever activity they are participating in at the moment. Every hiker's closet will have boots, hiking trousers, waterproof jackets, and all of the outdoor gear that could possibly come in handy in the forest (in a backpack, of course). This trend extends to more formal situations as well, meaning that you'll often find symphony, theater, and ballet audiences dressed in jackets and ties or dresses and heels.
USA SMILE
CZECH SMILE
Tone Down Your Smile One way to spot the foreigner among Czechs in any photo is a big toothy grin. The Czech smile is often a slight upturn of closed lips. The average resting face may even appear upset at first glance, but this is just because smiles are reserved for sincere interactions. And don't be put off by a downturned frown with what could be mistaken for a disapproving "hmmph" when speaking with locals. This is just the sound of active listening among Czechs.

So, Wait...Where Am I?! Czechoslovakia? Czechia? The Czech Republic?
You are still in the Czech Republic. Despite the claims of recent clickbait headlines, the country did not change it's name to Czechia. However, this was adopted as an official shorthand version (similar to saying America or The U.S. instead of The United States of America). Feelings about "Czechia" among locals are mixed – they either hate it or love it. For a safe, neutral option that's always correct, stick with the Czech Republic. And whatever you do, don't call it Czechoslovakia, which no longer exists (see below) or refer to the country as "Eastern Europe". You'll quickly be reminded that Prague is in Central Europe, thank you very much, and geographically farther west than both Vienna and Athens.

Certain behaviors scream, "I'm a tourist!" at first glance. While that's not the worst thing in the world, just be aware that these are some of the fastest ways to draw attention to yourself in the Czech capital.
Looking out of Place
Eat While Walking Lunch is a sit down meal. Dinner is a sit down meal. Czechs even make reservations to have an afternoon coffee. So wandering the streets with a burger or a burrito in hand is a clear indication of a visitor. To truly embrace the local lifestyle, sit down, relax, and order a beer with your meal (no matter what the time of day).
Instagram Your Ice-Cream Filled TrdelnĂk These doughy spiral treats dusted in cinnamon, sugar, and nuts are often advertised as "Bohemian" and "traditional" but are actually neither. You're not likely to find them anywhere outside of tourist centers or Christmas and Easter markets. The addition of ice cream and Nutella is even more recent, making them a prime subject for #foodporn photos. Just be sure to leave #traditional or #Czech out of your tags.
Posing for wedding photos You're very likely to see couples in large white wedding dresses and tuxedos around town, taking pictures in front of Prague's skyline and historical monuments. But don't mistake this for a local trend. It's actually the Chinese phenomenon of pre-wedding photos, popularized by celebrities and combined with a romantic Chinese movie (filmed in Prague) called Somewhere Only We Know, that fills the city with smiling brides and grooms.
Wear Matching Outfits This trend could be as innocent as a sea of similar hats bought by a tour group at their previous destination. Bolder examples involve groups of bright pink boas and a tiara for bachelorette parties (or "hen dos"), or the ridiculous costumes of British stag parties, ranging personalized T-shirts to grown men in diapers or cow costumes. Nothing says, "I'm not from around here" like a couple or group who are dressed alike.

Making Bar Talk
Having a chat with a Czech? If you can somehow make it past the first minor hurdle of not speaking Czech, here's a cheatsheet to chat about Politics and Sports for at least three minutes.
Talk Politics
Czechs love talking politics. Let's face it, this is the country that invented defenestation (the act of throwing a leader out of the window).
Miloš Zeman
Andrej Babiš
Václav Havel
The third and current President of the Czech Republic. Zeman has a reputation for heavy drinking and somewhat controversial views on things like immigration policies. Zeman announced plans to run for re-election in March of 2018.
Minister of Finance (and former CEO and sole owner of the largest agriculture company). He’s also the second wealthiest man in the Czech Republic. He’s drawn comparisons by many to being Czech’s Donald Trump. Sad.
Czech writer, philosopher, political dissident, and politician who served as the 1st President of the Czech Republic from 1993 to 2003. He passed away in 2011, but Czechs adore Havel, even many who didnt always agree with him.
Talk Sports
Nothing brings people together like sitting and watching and talking sports. Here's a run down of the two big football clubs in Prague, plus the most popular Czech hockey player (who plays for the NHL).
Choose one s of these team to support!
Jaromír Jágr
AC Sparta Prague
SK Slavia
Czech professional ice hockey right winger who currently plays for the NHL Florida Panthers, and an Ice God to Czechs. The guy is 45 and still a master on the ice. Talk about him like Michael Jordan .
AC Sparta Prague is a Czech football club based in Prague. It is the most successful club in the Czech Republic and one of the most successful in Central Europe. They play at Generali Arena, also known as Letná Stadium.
Founded in 1892, SK Slavia are the second most successful club in the Czech Republic since its independence in 1993. The team plays at Eden Arena.

COCKTAIL GUIDE The best cocktail bars in Prague( (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).
Tretter's 8@
V kolkovne 3, Praha 1 +420 224 811 165 www.tretters.cz
The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years. So it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. The drinks are incredible – custom cocktails and meticulously made classics, some with a new twist. Tretter’s gets absolutely packed, sometimes out of nowhere. The trick is a reservation, so you’ll want to call ahead.
Parlour 8$
Krakovská 15, Praha 1 +420 777 200 015 www.parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. The good news is you don’t have to worry about finding a menu in English—there is no menu. Instead, your bartender will ask what you like and offer suggestions from there.
L'Fleur 9$
V Kolkovně 920/5, 1, Praha +420 734 255 665 www.lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Mucha-inspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which your bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list.
Anonymous Bar 9# Michalská 432/12, Praha 1 +420 608 280 069
www.anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile. The bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender your likes and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the secret drink menu printed in UV ink and read with a small blacklight. Reservations are taken only until 9pm.
Prolog 8*
Nádražní 57/108, Praha 5 +420 775 005 007 www.prologbar.cz
Bar and Books 8%8^
Cash Only Bar 8(
Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the more casual in Manisova and slightly more formal in Týnská). The bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (though mostly for visual aesthetics). The cocktails here are serious business, and if you’re looking for a nice Cuban to go with your drink, this is the place to be.
Just around the corner from its older sibling Hemingway’s, this little gem is making its own name with cocktails like Pin-Up Martini, made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne. It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and, you guessed it— the bar doesn’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way, they do serve amazing hot dogs.
Manesova 64, Praha 2 and Týnská 19, Praha 1
Oblaca 9@
Bonvivant's CTC 8&
Prolog is about attention to detail, and they’ve clearly put thought into every aspect of their work. Take the drink menu. An American Physician weighed patients just before and after death in 1907, concluding the weight of the soul to be 21 grams—a moment that inspired Prolog’s 21-drink menu, which serves a reminder to patrons to celebrate life. Seven of those 21 drinks are named after the Seven Deadly Sins.
Bartolomějská 305, Praha 1 +420 775 331 862
Bonvivant's CTC isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and has a cool 1950’s feel with mid-century wood furnishings, a pressed tin ceiling and a checkered floor. Bartenders are a virtual encyclopedia of drink possibilities and suggestions based on your tastes. Incidentally, the “CTC” in the bar’s title actually stands for cocktail tapas café, and it hits the mark on each one, serving some pretty damn tasty dishes and coffee as well.
Uhelný trh 414/9, Praha 1 +420 224 267 266 www.levalmont.cz
Le Valmont is a newcomer, just opened in Spring 2016. The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Milos Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Just take note of the strict dress code at Le Valmont— no hats, hoodies, shorts, tank tops or sandals. Reservations are all but required, since the 100-capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly.
Staroměstské nám. 29, Praha 1 +420 224 213 807 www.blackangels.cz
Pařížská 1068/10 - Praha 1 +420 224 810 287 www.bugsysbar.cz
Bugsy’s is another bar with a great history, popping up just after the Velvet Revolution. Their one constant has been their attention to detail and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands in stock, as well as over 90 single malt whiskeys and 100 types of rum.

Black Angel's 8#
Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Old Town astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. With high cellar ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. The only downside to Black Angels is the influx of tourists which can pack the place, especially groups.
Žižkov Television Tower Mahlerovy sady 2699/1, Praha 3 + 420 210 320 086 www.oblaca.cz
High atop the Žižkov Television Tower, Oblaca is making better cocktails through science. Oblaca’s Aleš J. Števlík, genius mixologist gone mad scientist (maybe that explains the drink served in a test tube). Števlík deploys molecular mixology in his cocktail designs, exploring the physical and chemical transformations of ingredients that occur when making a cocktail.

With it's colonial-style interior straight from Old Havana, La Bodeguita is on point. In addition to great food, bar staff have perfected their craft with regional drinks, from the Cuba Libre to the Mojito. There's a live Cuban band several nights of the week and an amazing cigar selection as well (La Bodeguita was one of the first cigar bars in Prague). Bodeguita is synonymous with great entertainment, Mojitos, wild parties, dancing, original gastronomy and unforgettable experiences.
The Alchemist Bar 9*
Chances are, if you’ve asked around, you’ve already been recommended to Hemingway’s Bar. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. So reservations are recommended.

CLUB GUIDE
Our Quick Guide to where all the cool kids go AFTER MIDNIGHT
Roxy 6%
Dlouhá 33, Prague 1
The Roxy is one of Prague’s oldest and bestknown clubs. The venue was a popular theatre and ballroom in the 1920’s, but now you’ll find drum and bass, house, techno, and other modern styles on the dancefloor. When the club isn’t hosting a live DJ, it’s the spot for concerts and music festivals.
hard to see why. The club’s well-known team of skilled DJs keep the place pumping with a mixture of R&B, hip-hop, electro and dance music until the wee hours of morning, and the upscale, luxurious atmosphere makes every night feel like a celebration. As an added plus, M1 is also conveniently located in the very center of the city.
hip hop, punk, psychobilly and more can be heard on a weekly basis. This is one of the oldest functioning clubs in Prague and if you’re into it take bus no. 176 up to the Strahov hill and enjoy the vibe...
James Dean 7)
One for the curious bored or brave. Retro has become the Czech home of hard house. Their club nights are full to the rafters until the small hours while go-go dancers whip the energetic clubbers into a house driven frenzy. A very friendly atmosphere with smiling faces and sweating brows as far as the eye can see, there are more locals and fewer tourists here than some of the other large clubs with amazing DJ’s, lasers, and vibes. Dress code is free and easy, flamboyant if you’re feeling daring.
V kolkovně 922/1 www.jamesdean.cz/
Lucerna 6^ Vodičkova 36
One of the largest and most popular music clubs in Prague, Lucerna is known for its weekly concerts and events. But it’s maybe most popular on Friday and Saturday nights, when the club’s huge projection screens come alive with 80’s and 90’s music videos. Partygoers of every age and all walks of life can be seen here, getting down to oldie hits from Blondie to Nirvana.
Cross Club 6& Plynární 23, Prague 7 www.crossclub.cz
Cross Club is a labyrinth of small bars and dancefloors pumping music from dubstep and techno to reggae. The club’s psychedelic, industrial décor is a sight to see in itself—every piece of the building, from the walls to the ceiling, is constructed to move and pulsate with the music. It’s one of the most unique experiences you’ll have with nightlife in Praha, but you might want to grab an Uber. Cross Club is a bit out of the city’s center, but worth the trek.
Meet Factory 6* Ke Sklárně 3213/15 www.meetfactory.cz
This music club, art gallery, theater and cinema is the brainchild of David Černý, the artist responsible for some of Prague’s most famous (and controversial) modern art. A refurbished warehouse stuffed between a motorway and railroad tracks in Smíchov, Meet Factory transforms by night into a hip bar and music venue, where you’ll find local singers and international tours alike.
M1 Lounge 6( Masná 1, Prague 1 www.m1lounge.com
M1 Lounge is a favorite of locals, expats and even passing-through celebrities, and it’s not
Okay, we admit that this one’s kind of kitschy— but only in the best way. Named for the iconic rebel and actor, the bar has a classic 1950’s American diner feel, complete with checkered floors, red vinyl upholstery and lots of chrome. Famous for its larger-than-life statue of James Dean, it also serves some of the best burgers, milkshakes, and French fries in town.
Francouzská 75/4, 120 00 , Prague 2 www.retropraha.cz
Chapeau Rouge 7&
NEONE 7@
Jakubska 2, Old Town, Praha 1 www.chapeaurouge.cz
Bubenská 1 www.lunchmeat.cz/
Neone got its start as a pop-up party, but it’s since grown into a well-established and respected club in Prague’s electronic music scene known for their superior sound system and live gigs. Electronic music fans, this is the spot where the latest trends in the industry meet innovative artists and dedicated fans.
Radost FX 7#
Bělehradská 120, Prague 2 radostfx.cz
First opened in the early ‘90s just a few years after the Velvet Revolution, Radost FX is open Thursday to Saturday and offers the best of house, R&B and hip hop music—Rihanna even filmed one of her music videos there. Above the club is the venue’s restaurant and cafe, well-known as one of the best brunch spots in all of Prague.
Klub 007 7$
Chaloupeckého 7 www.klub007strahov.cz
Supporting underground and non-mainstream music since 1969, 007 is a legendary club on the Prague music scene. It’s history is rooted in student dissent, providing a welcoming space to students disenchanted with the former regime. 007 offers a healthy assortment of unique bands, DJs, and other musical acts. Music diversity is an emphasis: electro, indie,
SPORT‘S BAR
Retro 7%
Chapeau Rouge is a music clubs that ranks among the biggest in Prague with 3 floors, 4 bars & 3 stages. Chapeau truly has something for everyone! You may even stumble upon it all on your own: it’s in the center right behind Old Town Square and usually has some cool kids smoking a joint right outside its doors. The ground floor of Chapeau is a chill place to meet people from all over the world: travelers and expats alike. Go down one more floor and you’ll come across the dance club where international and local DJs blast out their beats playing pretty much 7 days a week with music in the main bar area being truly eclectic: everything from Balkan rhythms to drum & bass.
U Sudů 7*
Vodičkova 10, Prague 1 www.usudu.cz
U Sudu is the best of both worlds with a wine bar upstairs and an underground, cave-like labyrinth downstairs. When you walk in, don’t stop on the top level. All that is up here is a normal looking bar. Keep walking until you hit the stairs that descend into one of the coolest places to drink on Earth... It is indeed smoky, but get past that and the place is just mythic.

Harley's 7(
Dlouhá 18, 110 00 , Prague 1
Harleys is described as the coolest hell on earth. This American-style biker bar opens late and is always rockin’ and rollin’ with live DJs and music acts. It’s also in a perfect location, just a two-minute walk from Old Town Square. The entire placed is decked out in rock memorabilia ranging from Harley Davidson gear to Ramones and Jack Daniels posters.
La Loca r
Odborů 278/4, Prague 2
Chic, fashionable and a whole lotta fun! One of the very first smoke-free establishments in Prague entertains the crowds all day every day. The night is the time when true party colours of La Loca show. International vibes mixed with a scrumptious selection of sizzling drinks are a guarantee of a big night-out. Add a carefully selected music program - karaoke, 80s & 90s retro parties, DJ performances, live concerts and rooftop gatherings in the summer - and you can rest assured knowing you'll very likely to create memories to remember for a lifetime. Also, some of the most iconic pieces of art in Prague are situated at La Loca.
Café 80's 8)
You can't go wrong with 80's music. Whether you're nostaligic or just appreciative of all things "totally awesome", the two-story venue does features an 80's themed café restaurant on the first floor. But, the real story here is the basement. A nicely sized music club with an illuminated dance floor, plus a large bar and VIP lounge make it a night worthy of the MTV generation.
RESTAURANT GUIDE A few of our favorite places. Nobody paid to be on this list. get out there and enjoy yourself! Look for the location on the map in the middle of this issue.

Tram and Metro Map
Public Transport Tips:
First let people off, before you get on. If someone elderly gets on, give up your seat. It’s not just curtious, it’s expected here. To fit in on the metro and trams wear your headphones. If you don’t have headphones, then play with your phone instead, or read a book or this magazine. If you’ve been drinking, don’t act like an idiot, even with friends.
Late Night: After midnight, trams switch to “Night Service”, which includes a whole new schedule that can be a bit confusing - especially if you’ve had a few drinks. Our recommendation - call an Uber or Liftago or use a taxi to get to your destination.

Exhibitions This month
Lithuanian Film Posters The City of Prague Museum Na Poříčí 52
The exhibition presents the most interesting film posters of Lithuania from the collection of the Lithuanian Theater, Music and Film Museum in Vilnius. Visitors will see 43 posters from the period between 1953 and 2010 designed by the prominent Lithuanian affichists – mostly the graduates of the Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts from after the 1960s. Regardless of the period censorship, the posters show a specific artistic expression, allegorical importance, which remarkably expands the understanding of the films. Exhibit is opened through Thursday, August 21.
Vladimír Boudník
The City of Prague Museum Na Poříčí 52
Presentation of the work of an outstanding Czech graphic artist and painter, a representative of active and structural graphic art, and a ‘Gentle Barbarian’ whose life and work was closely associated with the Libeň and Vysočany quarters of Prague. The works have been lent by Jan Placák’s private collection. Exhibit is opened through Sunday, October 29.
First Scream, First Cry The City of Prague Museum Na Poříčí 52
The exhibition brings focus to the history of attendance at birth from the individual care to the foundation of medical delivery institutions in Prague. The greatest accent is put on the period between the 2nd half of the 18th and the 1st half of the 19th centuries because it was a period of cardinal changes in the attitude for providing help to women while giving birth. The exhibition presents a manifold evidence of the midwife and obstetrics professions, from medical instruments and various tools to the traditions of birth giving, legal documents, and some written records. Exhibit is open through Sunday, October 15.
Burial Mound of Libeň The City of Prague Museum Na Poříčí 52
In 1890, a grave with a skeleton in an extended position was found in Libeň, in the garden in front of the synagogue on today’s Zenklova Street. In addition to a ceramic jug, there were two extraordinarily long bronze pins – measuring 77 cm – on the skeleton’s chest. Based on these findings, the grave originated in the Middle Bronze Age, in particular in the period of the Middle Danube Tumulus Culture (1550–1300 BC). Exhibit is open through Sunday, October 1.
Prague of Charles IV – A Grandiose Building Site in Europe House at the Golden Týnská 630/6
The first stage of the exhibition at the House at the Golden Ring was launched as part of the celebrations of the 700th birth anniversary of Charles IV. Focusing on urban development in Prague and its changes throughout the 14th century, the display accentuates the rule of Charles IV and the House of Luxembourg.
From a Thread to a Shirt / Medieval Textile Production and Dyeing in Prague House at the Golden Týnská 630/6
Textile and its products were important parts of the everyday life of medieval Prague. The exhibition introduces medieval textile and dyeing crafts during the 14th and 15th centuries. Visitors can find various types of textiles, their practical use for everyday life, and the historic fashion of the inhabitants of the New Town of Prague in the High Middle Ages. A unique collection of a few hundred medieval textile fragments discovered during archaeological research of the dump layers in the centre of Prague is the core of the exhibition. Exhibit is open through Sunday, October 29.
Vanished Podskalí and Life on the Vltava Podskalí Custom House at Výtoň
Rašínovo nábřeží 412 The Podskalí Customs House at Výtoň is the last reminder of old Podskalí. In this Renaissance building with a 16th century timber storey, a toll called ‘výtoň’ (referring to the cut logs from rafts) was collected on timber that was floated to Prague. The life of Podskalí raftsmen, timber traders, sand miners, ice diggers, and others whose life was connected with water is presented through historical photographs and tools used by the Podskalí locals. The next part of the exhibition is dedicated to the history of raft and ship transportation near Prague – visitors will again find historical photographs presented with the help of modern technology. Furthermore, the exhibition shows models of ships and a raft. The exhibition has been designed to also attract children.

Crafts in Guilds / The History of Craftsmen’s Association from the Middle Ages to the Present Ctěnice Chateau Bohdanečská 259/1
Introducing the history of crafts and guild association, the permanent exhibition Crafts in Guilds presents one of the world’s largest collections of guild artefacts which is administered by the City of Prague Museum.
Object of the Quarter of a Year: Locksmith Guild Funeral Shield Ctěnice Chateau Bohdanečská 259/1
Locksmithing is one of the oldest crafts. Originally, locksmiths were blacksmiths who later specialised in subtler and technically more demanding metalwork. In the 14th century, there were so many of them in Prague that they found their own guild. They also included in their guild similar crafts such as gunsmiths, spur makers, and clockmakers. Funeral shields were raised above the coffin during a cortege and there was always an even number of them. The locksmith’s guild had four shields from 1611, each of them showing specific signs of the particular group of artisans: locksmiths, spur makers, gunsmiths, and clockmakers. The locksmith’s burial shield features crossed keys, two locks, and names of guild members encircling the shield, all bullion-embroidered.
Ctěnice Chateau / History, Building Development and Reconstruction Ctěnice Chateau Bohdanečská 259/1
The exhibition presents a long and complex history of the Ctěnice domain from the earliest times to the present. It also attempts to briefly present the overall reconstruction of the compound, which was carried out between 1997 and 2004.
History of Vinoř / From Prehistoric Times to the 20th Century Ctěnice Chateau Bohdanečská 259/1
The exhibition, which was devised in cooperation with the Prague-Vinoř Municipal District, presents the history of Vinoř to visitors.
Art Forged in Iron / Blacksmith’s and Locksmith’s Art in the Collections of the City of Prague Museum Ctěnice Chateau Bohdanečská 259/1
The City of Prague Museum’s collection of locks and ironwork was established shortly after the museum’s foundation; today it comprises up to 1,350 items. The first part of the blacksmith and locksmith art exhibition presents examples of the locksmith craft. Visitors will learn about the history of locking mechanisms, lock types, and ironwork. The second part of the exhibition is dedicated to the large-sized blacksmith art; the earliest items come from the Baroque era. Emphasis is put on objects which either were made in Prague or connected their ‘life’ with the city. The current works of blacksmith art are situated in Ctěnice Chateau’s exteriors. Various cultural events, vocational school presentations, and workshops will accompany the exhibition. Exhibit open through Sunday, October 1.
Prague-Těšnov Station / Back in Operation Ctěnice Chateau Bohdanečská 259/1, Prague 9
The new permanent exhibition presents an extinct station of Prague as a model railway (HO scale 1:87) and a locomotive depot. The exhibition gives a chance to visitors to get an idea about the most beautiful station building in Prague which was built between 1872 and 1875 as a prestigious structure of the significant Austrian Northwestern Railway Company. A 3D model of the building including its remarkable sculptural decoration was printed based on the original technical drawings. Exhibit open through Monday, April 9.
Petřín Observation Tower Petřínské sady
A Place to Walk, Enjoy the View, and Learn about Quarrying.
Mirror Maze on Petřín Hill
Custos Turris / City Warden
Town Belfry by St Nicholas Church Malostranské Nám. 556/29
The City of Prague Museum prepared a comprehensive permanent exhibition about the arduous life of tower wardens, the history of the structure, the development of the town watchtower service, and the belfry’s misuse during the totalitarian regime. Visitors can take a look into the tower warden’s flat of the second half of the 18th century, which includes a smoke kitchen – the only publicly accessible one in Prague. This part continues with a signalling room – where the tower warden did his job. The interior of this room corresponds to the first half of the 19th century. The second flat of the tower warden dates to 1891 when the signalling function was cancelled and the warden looked after the clock. The exhibition also presents the Baroque sewage system, and visitors may admire the bell chamber with a bell chair and St Nicholas Bell of 1576. The tower also includes the unique ‘Kajka’ – an observation post of the State Security on the very top of the belfry, which was used until 1990.
Lesser Town Bridge Tower Charles Bridge
The Lesser Town Bridge Tower is situated at one end of Charles Bridge, and is the ancient gate to the Lesser Town..For tourists arriving from the Old Town, this is the main pedestrian entrance to the Lesser Town, a lovely quarter of Prague with restaurants, bars and boutique shops. The Lesser Town Bridge Tower was built in the second half of the 15th century under the rule of King George of Podebrady. The model for its construction was undoubtedly the Old Town Bridge Tower, constructed earlier on the opposite side of Charles Bridge.Connected to the Lesser Town Bridge Tower by a walkway is a smaller tower, Judith‘s Tower, the only remaining part of the original Prague bridge, the Romanesque Judith‘s Bridge, which was destroyed by floods in 1342.Inside the Lesser Town Bridge Tower is an exhibition dedicated to the eventful history of Charles Bridge, with graphic descriptions of the invading armies that have crossed it. There are stairs to the top, which you can climb for a fine view over the Lesser Town, Charles Bridge, the Vltava River and across into Prague‘s Old Town.
New Mill Water Tower
Petřínské sady
The Fight of Students Against the Swedes on Charles Bridge in 1648 – a monumental painting (8 x 10 m), diorama, which was made by the brothers Adolf and Karel Liebscher in 1891.The diorama is under restoration until the end of September 2017.
The Tower Mystery Charles Bridge
On the occasion of the celebrations of Charles IV’s birth anniversary, the City of Prague Museum opened a permanent exhibition in the Old Town Bridge Tower. Since the tower was a part of Charles Bridge and the two structures were founded at the same time, the foundation stone of the bridge might be hidden in the pier located below the tower. The tower’s construction was completed along with the bridge in the early 15th century. For its architectural and artistic aspects, the tower ranks among the greatest highlights of High Gothic structures of Charles IV, not only in Prague but also in (Central) Europe. The tower is distinguished by many authentic details (e.g. mason’s marks), artistic decoration, and its urban appearance. The permanent exhibition presents unquestionable facts as well as various hypotheses, which arouse the visitors’ interest although they cannot be verified. A small presentation of objects retrieved from the Vltava, including the latest findings of the unique riverbed research focused on the riverbed mapping, is installed in the tower’s underground.
Powder Tower
Nám. Republiky 5
served as a gunpowder store, is still the starting point for the Coronation or Royal Route to Prague Castle. The viewing gallery is located at a height of 44 m.
This monumental entrance by which the coronation processions of Czech kings entered the Old Town is one of the most significant monuments of Late Gothic Prague. Completed in 1475, the Powder Tower, which formerly
Nové mlýny 827/3A
The New Mill Water Tower, which is open to the public for the first time ever, presents a permanent exhibition about Prague fires in the past and a history of Prague firefighters. This technical structure was erected after the mid-17th century to provide a water supply to the surroundings of the New Town of Prague. In the 15th century, a wooden water tower was on the site of today’s tower; a sumptuous stone tower was built between 1602 and 1606 with a lookout area referred to as ‘Lusthaus’ on the top floor.
History of Fire Fighting and Fires in Prague New Mill Water Tower
Nové mlýny 827/3A
The exhibition presents the threat of fire for Prague many centuries ago as well as in recent times. Furthermore, the methods used by the metropolis residents to defend against the destructive element will be presented along with the development of technical solutions and the institutional establishment of fire fighting. The form and layout of the permanent exhibition are tailored to the spatial conditions of the New Mill Water Tower. Digital reproductions of Prague vistas, disastrous fires in Prague, and prominent fire fighters with their gear and tools will be presented. The reproductions come from the collections of the City of Prague Museum and photo archives of the Fire Rescue Service of the City of Prague. The exhibition concept is based on multimedia elements. In addition to specific depictions of fire fighting via picture projection, prints, photographs, and historical textbooks for fire fighters and fire fighting codes, visitors will have a chance to experience the terrifying moments during vast fires in medieval and early modern Prague. The feeling of the threat of fire affecting all quarters of Prague will be created via sensual illusions.

From Fire Safety to an International Spy Base:
Malá Strana’s Versatile
Municipal Tower
By Auburn Scallon The Baroque bell tower beside St. Nicholas Church in the Malá Strana district of Prague has quite a storied history. Since the mid-18th century it has kept the local time, prevented citywide fires, played a part in WWII, and housed a spy center as recently as 1990. The City of Prague Museums exhibit takes visitors through a different period of Czech history on every level.
A Spy Base One of the most surprising legends hidden inside this Baroque beauty is the top floor. From the 1960s until the fall of Communism in the late 1980s, this room was used as a base of operations for Czechoslovakian surveillance. “The only people who worked here were retired members of the Secret Police,” explained the museum’s curator Karel Kučera. “This was the command position. If someone left an [American, British, or West German] embassy, an agent called to tell them about it.” This top floor no longer holds the original furniture or records, but there are traces of life to spark your imagination. Frayed newspaper clippings of football matches cling to one of the walls, and you can see the adhesive of torn down posters of pinup girls. “They were watching Western agents on the streets, and looking at Western women on their walls,” Kučera joked. The exhibit also includes a holographic imagined conversation and windows in all directions to try out your own spy skills on the visitors below.
A Pillar of Resistance
Life in the Tower
The floor below the former spy center provides a crash course in WWII history. A short video explains the significance of the bell tower in the resistance that led to the end of the war, and the roles that Czechs, Russians, Americans played in the days from May 5-9, 1945. If you look up, you’ll find charred beams lining the ceiling. “Don’t worry,” Kučera assures. The damage isn’t from the war but from an accidental roof fire from a careless tinsmith in 1925. “The beams used to hold the old system that operated the clock,” Kučera said, but are reinforced to maintain the tower’s integrity.
The lower levels give a further glimpse into what historic life as a resident of the tower looked like. The belfry itself holds only one of the four original bells, after its three siblings were melted down as part of the war effort. There are also two levels of flats with recreated furniture to show the modest but comfortable accommodations. Tower warden was a somewhat respectable job in the 18th and 19th century, although their life was confined to a tower. “They earned not just money, but wood from municipal forests, water, and living supplies,” Kučera explained. And as any history teacher knows all too well, one of the questions that always causes curiosity is, “How did they go to the bathroom?” The spiral staircase includes an ornate sink in good condition from the 1870s and, for the engineering minded among you, a description and mirror to examine some early plumbing advances that made life a little more comfortable for its first residents.
A Watchful Eye on the City Fire damage is a fairly ironic element of this tower, whose original purpose included watching for potential fires across the city in the 18th and 19th centuries. The outdoor gallery level, located 215 circular steps above ground, gives today’s visitors a 360 degree view of the city, but used to be far more functional. The tower warden was tasked with patrolling the gallery every fifteen minutes, watching for chimney fires, impending floods, or other potential dangers to the city. In case of emergency, the warden hung either a red flag during the day or a lantern at night to signal the local volunteer firefighters, and rang the bell as a warning to the entire city. The watchman then raced one floor down and dropped a message detailing the danger to the city police in order to organize a quick response. Today visitors can relax and take panoramic photos without the weight of this responsibility on their shoulders.

Urban Legend
The many lives of Cartoonist and Olympian Petr Urban
Petr Urban (second from left) along side the grandchildren of illustrator Jaroslav Hasek (creator of famed character Švejk) and entertainer Marek Brodský during celebratiin of Švejk book release.
BY adrian mclaughlin Petr Urban is a household name in Prague — but not for reasons you’d expect. As an Olympic medalist who also happens to be the city’s most iconic cartoonist, it’s hard to find something that Urban isn’t good at. Trust us, we tried. In fact, we caught up with the artist and sports champion himself at U Pivrnce, a pub he runs alongside his son, to talk about his unusual career, where he gets the inspiration for his bawdy cartoonery and the legacy he hopes to leave behind. While the pairing of sports and cartoon illustrations may seem unlikely to outsiders, to Urban, it makes perfect sense. While training as a luger, Urban came to admire the bravery of the sportsmen around him — “they are very brave and straight people who are not really scared of the system,” Urban says. “[Sports are] what gave me the inner power.” The first sketches he ever did were of powerful, confident athletes. Years later, the same themes would eventually inspire Urban’s characteristic style of fearless, raunchy comics. But starting out as a cartoonist for the popular Czech magazine Dikobraz prior to the revolution, Urban says he felt it best to illustrate lighthearted, normal events. It wasn’t until the revolution of 1989, and the boom in the comedy industry that came with it, that Urban and other cartoonists began to experiment with dirty jokes and
bawdy humor. (Ironically, Urban says the majority of customers were women, buying his cartoon books for their husbands.) Eventually, Urban went on to illustrate for several Czech masterpieces like “Dobrý voják Švejk” and “The Tales from the Little Quarter.” To this day, he’s sold nearly five million copies of books and calendars, which means his illustrations have covered half the nation. “If this would have happened in America, I’d be a millionaire,” Urban jokes. Even as his cartoonist career began to explode, Urban never left sports behind. Growing up, his only dream was to become a professional athlete like his father, Olympic luger Horst Urban, and that’s exactly what he did, representing thenCzechoslovakia in the 1988 and 1992 Winter Olympics. But he says he enjoys the way cartoons let him connect with people, share their stories — and make them smile. “I want to entertain people and the feedback is good, so I continue. My work helps people get through difficult periods in their lives because laughing is healthy,” Urban tells us. “Someone even put my drawings next to their grave, just to make the situation lighter.” Now — and in characteristic Czech fashion — Urban likes to spread his penchant for making people laugh through the walls of his son’s pub, U Pivrnce. Jokes and cartoons cover
every inch of the pub’s walls, many illustrated by customers themselves, and dozens created by Urban. Here guests can also find the mascot of Ruda Pivrnec, Urban’s most influential cartoon. It’s not the first time Urban has filled a pub’s walls with cartoons. As a child, Urban says he would often visit his aunt’s pub in Jizerske hory, where celebrities from across the country would venture for a taste of arnica, a rare herb used as an ingredient for strong drinks. It was here that Urban began to

dream of owning his own pub one day. When Petr got the money from his first book, he did just that, opening a pub in his hometown, Smržovka, where buses of tourists would visit to watch him draw. While the original pub has since been closed, Urban opened U Pivrnce in 1993. Prior to opening, Urban locked himself inside the pub for ten days to cover the walls with jokes and cartoons, working so hard that his fingers bled. With a successful career as an Olympic athlete, cartoonist and now, two-time pub owner, it’s hard to imagine what more Urban hopes to accomplish. But true to his creative instinct, Urban is already launching a new project — online cartoon newsletters, which he hopes to begin disseminating once a week in August. His other latest project is designing the illustrations for a Stations of the Cross, which will be placed in his hometown of Smržovka. One day in the future, you might see Urban’s cartoons even come to life in animation. With such diverse talents, it’s hard to predict Urban’s next move. But when asked about his daily routine, it’s clear that Urban’s passions still lie in sports, cartoonery, and — like a true Czech — his pub. Upon waking around midday, Urban says he begins the day with a jog. At 4 p.m., he takes a seat at his desk, cracks open a beer, or sips from a bottle of wine. Then, he begins to draw..
Pictured on the right is one of Petr Urban’s newest illustrations, Křížová Cesta. Inspired by visions of the “Stations of the Cross Way” in his dreams, Petr Urban strayed from his typical humor to illustrate the Stations of the Cross in Smržovka. The fourteen illustrations symbolically follow the events associated with the crucifixion of Christ. When the exhibit opens in August, people will be able to actually experience what Urban claims is his greatest artistic accomplishment thus far.
