10 MUST-DO THINGS THIS MONTH | FRINGE FESTIVAL CONTINUED | 400+ EVENTS PLUS CITY, TRAM & METRO MAP FREE FOR NICE PEOPLE
I like prague in june (How about you?) A few months ago, a lunch meeting with our friends from the Fringe Festival turned towards the conversation of our offices, which were moving from The Dancing House to our Nerudova 25 space, just below the castle. While we were worried we’d possibly bitten off more than we could chew by expanding from print to giving “free unbiased advice", Fringe founder Steve Gove was quick to distract from our concerns by changing the subject to how the Fringe Festival might use our new space once we were in and settled. And, that’s just what they’ve done. If you didn't know - like it's sister festivals,
PRAGUE
Prague Fringe is a festival of English-language theatre, comedy, cabaret and more. The Prague Visitor Centre has become a Fringe Green Room of sorts this year, serving as “Artist Central”, a hub where performers from all over the world “hang out” between performances to use our internet, drink our coffee, and amaze us with their everyday talents. If you have a chance, check out a performance or two (at least). The Prague Fringe runs through June 3. The month is packed full of plenty of events in addition to Fringe, ranging from ice cream festivals to beer, cider and prosecco festivals, and

of course we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the Metronome Festival, with Sting headlining. Then there's The Foo Fighters, Winton Marsalis, and so much more (you can read about it in our Night & Day section). Last of all, If you’re out and about, stop by our Prague Visitor Centre and say hi, get some coffee and maybe pick up a Prague SuperGuide or Taste of Prague Foodie Map. We also love answering questions. If you’re lucky, you might even get to socialize with a few of the Fringe Festival performers. Until next month, Enjoy Prague!

Their mix of powerful riffs, socio-political commentary and enless quirkiness has produced some of the most memorable rock tunes of the past 15 years. Prague Fringe Profile
Mary & Paul Bartlett
Fringe Folk
What inspires this American couple to travel from Portland to Paris to the Prague Fringe year after year? "The Prague Fringe is a manageable size and held in a beautiful city," Mary explained. "I love the originality of the shows, the accessibility of the performers, and the sheer energy of all who are involved. It is live theater at its best, and every year brings fresh surprises and a lot of fun." "This year will be our third time at the Fringe. And the total number of shows we've seen? Forty is a rough guess." Mary and Paul Bartlett, both originally from Washington, DC, split their time between Europe and the west coast of the United States. "We live in Portland, Oregon in the winter and summer, and Paris in the spring and fall – so we usually come from Paris which is an easy trip." "I admire the energy, the talent, the humor – and even the courage – of the performers and the staff. The Prague Fringe Festival is unique: creative, stimulating, and so positive. It’s a great experience." And what advice can these veteran audience members offer newcomers? "Buy tickets in advance – we usually get the discount vouchers. And go to the after-parties at least a few times. It gives one chance to meet the actors and really talk about the shows."
Prague Fringe discount vouchers cost 650 Kč (5x tickets at 130 Kč each). Voucher tickets can be used at any show but are subject to the availability of that show and do not guarantee entry to a sold-out performance.
The Loud Poets The 2016 winners of the Prague Fringe New Territories award are back this year, with some fond memories. “It was our first time performing a Loud Poets show anywhere other than the UK, so of course we were rather nervous. After winning the award last year, we had the opportunity to perform our show in London with Chats Palace. It was invaluable for us to build an audience and to meet so many industry professionals.” These Scottish poets are also looking forward to enjoying some down time. “Last year, we had our return flight booked for the day after the after-party (never again)! This year, we're giving ourselves a couple of days off to see other shows and really experience the city itself.
Full programme & tickets
The free nightly after-parties take place at fringe venue Malostranská beseda after the last show in that space. From karaoke and Scottish dancing to quiz nights – there’s something for everyone! 10
THE PRAGUE VISITOR | June 2017

Dan Lees English comedian Dan Lees returns for the third year in a row, with praise for the festival’s unique character. “The Prague Fringe Festival is different from other fringes, such as Adelaide or Edinburgh, because it is curated. Most fringe festivals are open access, so the quality of the shows is not managed as a whole. The Prague fringe has a well-balanced and cohesive programme.” He also has some tips for audience members beyond the theatre walls. “After a show, there is nothing better than a Czech beer or a Becherovka and tonic in any of the cosy bars. As a vegetarian one of my favorite places to eat is Beas Vegetarian Dhaba (www.beas-dhaba.cz).” And for the night owls, “One of the traditions of the Fringe is after the final night, everyone involved in the festival who is still up goes to watch the sunrise from the Charles Bridge. This is a beautiful moment, saying goodbye for another year.”

BEER GARDENS [including one wine garden]
By Auburn Scallon
Beer gardens combine two of the Czech Republic’s greatest passions, beer and nature, which makes these outdoor spaces the perfect places to experience local culture and enjoy the Prague sunshine.
For Gorgeous Views:
Letna Beer Garden
Under one wooden picnic bench, you’ll find neighborhood dogs lounging patiently at their owners’ feet, taking a break from a walk through Letna Park. At the next table, a group of international students are likely discussing how to say “cheers” in their native languages. Along the railing, travelers and Instagram fans take turns capturing panoramic views of Old Town and the Vltava River or snapping selfies. Every table is covered in plastic cups of Gambrinus, alongside an occasional cider or shots of liquor. Be warned – although it looks like a public park, visitors are not allowed to bring their own drinks or bottles of wine, so grab a foam-topped cup of the local stuff and enjoy the view. How to Get There: If you don’t mind a hike, take the 6, 8, 15 or 26 trams to Dlouhá Třída, cross the bridge and climb the stairs to the top of the hill. For a gentler path, take trams 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 12, 14, 25 or 26 to Letenské náměstí and enter from the back of Letna Park.
To Sit Back and Relax:
Hospůdka Na Hradbách
This lesser-known beer garden is hidden in plain sight, tucked behind the Rotunda of St. Martin in the Vyšehrad complex. The vibe is mellow and family-friendly. Don’t be surprised to find baby strollers parked beside many of the picnic tables surrounding a children’s play area and small open field. Drop by after a visit to the nearby Gothic Church of Saints Peter and Paul, and toast the Czech legends like composers Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana and Art Nouveau artist Alfons Mucha, just down the road in the Vyšehrad cemetery. Hospůdka Na Hradbách serves a wide variety of food and beverages, including grilled meats and sausages, Pilsner and Kozel beer, cider, wine, cocktails, and homemade lemonade. How to Get There: Take the red metro line C to the Vyšehrad stop and follow the signs towards the Vyšehrad complex, which is roughly a ten-minute walk. june 2017 | THE PRAGUE VISITOR 13
For a Rowdy Crowd:
Riegrovy Sady
You can generally hear the crowd at Riegrovy Sady before you can see them, particularly if there is an international sports match on the outdoor projector screen. This 1,400-seat enclosed area inside Reigrovy Sady park is a lively, crowded, outdoor experience that is popular with locals and expats from the surrounding Vinohrady neighborhood. The bar serves Pilsner, Gambrinus, Kozel and cider on tap, plus imported bottled beers, wine, shots, cocktails and cola, and a menu of gilled meats and bar snacks. When you need a break from the crowds, head down the park path to the grassy hill where quieter crowds gather to watch the sun set over the Prague Castle. How to Get There: Reigrovy Sady park is a short walk from the Jiřího z Poděbrad stop on the green metro line A or the Vinohradská tržnice stop on trams 1, 11, and 13.
To Get a Glimpse of Local Life:
Žižkov Beer Garden
If you’re willing to stray a little farther off the beaten path, you’ll find this laidback local favorite on the edge of Prague’s Žižkov neighborhood. Dogs and kids run freely through wide open fields of dirt and grass while the adults chat over glasses of Staropramen beer – including a few lighter fruit-flavored options – in the shade of umbrellas. Techno remixes of pop hits from recent decades float through the air, giving the scene an easygoing, backyard BBQ kind of vibe. While you’re in the neighborhood, take a walk to the top of Vitkov Hill to see the National Monument and massive equestrian statue of Jan Žižka (who the area is named for) or take a five-minute walk to the local art house cinema, Kino Aero, and catch an evening movie. How to Get There: Take trams 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 23, 24, 25, or 26 to the Biskupcova stop and cross the intersection to enter the garden.
To Be Part of the Moment:
Náplavka
One of Prague’s most popular outdoor spots doesn’t exactly qualify as a “garden”, but that doesn’t stop locals and visitors from filling every inch of concrete along the riverbank known as Náplavka. In May 2017, The New York Times named it one of their “10 Favorite Places on European Rivers, Lakes and Coastlines.” Farmer’s markets draw huge crowds on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Beer, wine, and food festivals often fill the space on weekends throughout the summer. Every night of the week offers a variety of beer stands and boat pubs lining the banks alongside young couples dangling their legs over the river’s edge, and you’ll often find live music or DJs spinning a soundtrack to Prague’s hippest outdoor scene. How to Get There: Take the yellow metro line B to the Karlovo Náměstí stop and exit the station towards Palackého náměstí. Trams 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 12, 16, 17, 20, and 21 also go to Palackého náměstí. Then cross the street and head down any staircase or ramp to the riverbank.

THE PRAGUE VISITOR | june 2017
For the Wine Lovers:
Grebovka
Prague may be best known for its beer, but there is an entire neighborhood, Vinohrady, named for the vineyards that used to cover the area. These days, wine fans congregate in Havlíčkovy sady park to share a bottle of local vino under a gazebo while surrounded by the 14-century Grébovka vineyards, which were founded by Charles IV. Afterwards, take a stroll through Havlíčkovy sady park, dotted with architectural gems just asking to be photographed, including an ornate stone grotto and fountain and an Italian Renaissance-style villa. How to Get There: Havlíčkovy sady park is an easy downhill walk from the Náměstí Mírustop on the green metro line A, or tram stop Jana Masaryka on the 4, 13, or 22.
Fun Local Beer Facts • To toast in the Czech Republic, you should say “Na zdraví” (pronounced NAH-straw-vee) which means “to health”. • It’s important to look each individual person in the eyes as you toast and never cross arms to reach another person. • Czech beer is typically served with a think foamy head on the top of the glass or cup, which is a sign of the freshness and quality of the beer. • In most pubs and restaurants, beer is cheaper than a bottle of water. • Czechs are some of the biggest beer drinkers in the world, averaging over 140 liters a year per capita (and that includes babies and grandparents).

COCKTAIL GUIDE The best cocktail bars in Prague( (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).
Tretter's 8@
V kolkovne 3, Praha 1 +420 224 811 165 www.tretters.cz
The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years. So it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. The drinks are incredible – custom cocktails and meticulously made classics, some with a new twist. Tretter’s gets absolutely packed, sometimes out of nowhere. The trick is a reservation, so you’ll want to call ahead.
Parlour 8$
Krakovská 15, Praha 1 +420 777 200 015 www.parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. The good news is you don’t have to worry about finding a menu in English—there is no menu. Instead, your bartender will ask what you like and offer suggestions from there.
L'Fleur 9$
V Kolkovně 920/5, 1, Praha +420 734 255 665 www.lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Mucha-inspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which your bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list.
Anonymous Bar 9# Michalská 432/12, Praha 1 +420 608 280 069
www.anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile. The bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender your likes and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the secret drink menu printed in UV ink and read with a small blacklight. Reservations are taken only until 9pm.
Prolog 8*
Nádražní 57/108, Praha 5 +420 775 005 007 www.prologbar.cz
Bar and Books 8%8^
Cash Only Bar 8(
Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the more casual in Manisova and slightly more formal in Týnská). The bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (though mostly for visual aesthetics). The cocktails here are serious business, and if you’re looking for a nice Cuban to go with your drink, this is the place to be.
Just around the corner from its older sibling Hemingway’s, this little gem is making its own name with cocktails like Pin-Up Martini, made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne. It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and, you guessed it— the bar doesn’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way, they do serve amazing hot dogs.
Manesova 64, Praha 2 and Týnská 19, Praha 1
Bonvivant's CTC 8&
Prolog is about attention to detail, and they’ve clearly put thought into every aspect of their work. Take the drink menu. An American Physician weighed patients just before and after death in 1907, concluding the weight of the soul to be 21 grams—a moment that inspired Prolog’s 21-drink menu, which serves a reminder to patrons to celebrate life. Seven of those 21 drinks are named after the Seven Deadly Sins.
Bartolomějská 305, Praha 1 +420 775 331 862
Bonvivant's CTC isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and has a cool 1950’s feel with mid-century wood furnishings, a pressed tin ceiling and a checkered floor. Bartenders are a virtual encyclopedia of drink possibilities and suggestions based on your tastes. Incidentally, the “CTC” in the bar’s title actually stands for cocktail tapas café, and it hits the mark on each one, serving some pretty damn tasty dishes and coffee as well.
Bugsy's 9%
Le Valmont 9)
Uhelný trh 414/9, Praha 1 +420 224 267 266 www.levalmont.cz
Le Valmont is a newcomer, just opened in Spring 2016. The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Milos Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Just take note of the strict dress code at Le Valmont— no hats, hoodies, shorts, tank tops or sandals. Reservations are all but required, since the 100-capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly.
Bugsy’s is another bar with a great history, popping up just after the Velvet Revolution. Their one constant has been their attention to detail and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands in stock, as well as over 90 single malt whiskeys and 100 types of rum.

Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Old Town astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. With high cellar ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. The only downside to Black Angels is the influx of tourists which can pack the place, especially groups.
Chances are, if you’ve asked around, you’ve already been recommended to Hemingway’s Bar. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. So reservations are recommended.

High atop the Žižkov Television Tower, Oblaca is making better cocktails through science. Oblaca’s Aleš J. Števlík, genius mixologist gone mad scientist (maybe that explains the drink served in a test tube). Števlík deploys molecular mixology in his cocktail designs, exploring the physical and chemical transformations of ingredients that occur when making a cocktail.
La Bodeguita del Medio 9&
Kaprova 19/5, Praha 1 +420 224 813 922 www.labodeguitadelmedio.cz
With it's colonial-style interior straight from Old Havana, La Bodeguita is on point. In addition to great food, bar staff have perfected their craft with regional drinks, from the Cuba Libre to the Mojito. There's a live Cuban band several nights of the week and an amazing cigar selection as well (La Bodeguita was one of the first cigar bars in Prague). Bodeguita is synonymous with great entertainment, Mojitos, wild parties, dancing, original gastronomy and unforgettable experiences.

CLUB GUIDE
Our Quick Guide to where all the cool kids go AFTER MIDNIGHT
Roxy 6%
Dlouhá 33, Prague 1
The Roxy is one of Prague’s oldest and bestknown clubs. The venue was a popular theatre and ballroom in the 1920’s, but now you’ll find drum and bass, house, techno, and other modern styles on the dancefloor. When the club isn’t hosting a live DJ, it’s the spot for concerts and music festivals.
hard to see why. The club’s well-known team of skilled DJs keep the place pumping with a mixture of R&B, hip-hop, electro and dance music until the wee hours of morning, and the upscale, luxurious atmosphere makes every night feel like a celebration. As an added plus, M1 is also conveniently located in the very center of the city.
hip hop, punk, psychobilly and more can be heard on a weekly basis. This is one of the oldest functioning clubs in Prague and if you’re into it take bus no. 176 up to the Strahov hill and enjoy the vibe...
James Dean 7)
One for the curious bored or brave. Retro has become the Czech home of hard house. Their club nights are full to the rafters until the small hours while go-go dancers whip the energetic clubbers into a house driven frenzy. A very friendly atmosphere with smiling faces and sweating brows as far as the eye can see, there are more locals and fewer tourists here than some of the other large clubs with amazing DJ’s, lasers, and vibes. Dress code is free and easy, flamboyant if you’re feeling daring.
V kolkovně 922/1 www.jamesdean.cz/
Lucerna 6^ Vodičkova 36
One of the largest and most popular music clubs in Prague, Lucerna is known for its weekly concerts and events. But it’s maybe most popular on Friday and Saturday nights, when the club’s huge projection screens come alive with 80’s and 90’s music videos. Partygoers of every age and all walks of life can be seen here, getting down to oldie hits from Blondie to Nirvana.
Cross Club 6& Plynární 23, Prague 7 www.crossclub.cz
Cross Club is a labyrinth of small bars and dancefloors pumping music from dubstep and techno to reggae. The club’s psychedelic, industrial décor is a sight to see in itself—every piece of the building, from the walls to the ceiling, is constructed to move and pulsate with the music. It’s one of the most unique experiences you’ll have with nightlife in Praha, but you might want to grab an Uber. Cross Club is a bit out of the city’s center, but worth the trek.
Meet Factory 6* Ke Sklárně 3213/15 www.meetfactory.cz
This music club, art gallery, theater and cinema is the brainchild of David Černý, the artist responsible for some of Prague’s most famous (and controversial) modern art. A refurbished warehouse stuffed between a motorway and railroad tracks in Smíchov, Meet Factory transforms by night into a hip bar and music venue, where you’ll find local singers and international tours alike.
M1 Lounge 6( Masná 1, Prague 1 www.m1lounge.com
M1 Lounge is a favorite of locals, expats and even passing-through celebrities, and it’s not
Okay, we admit that this one’s kind of kitschy— but only in the best way. Named for the iconic rebel and actor, the bar has a classic 1950’s American diner feel, complete with checkered floors, red vinyl upholstery and lots of chrome. Famous for its larger-than-life statue of James Dean, it also serves some of the best burgers, milkshakes, and French fries in town.
Francouzská 75/4, 120 00 , Prague 2 www.retropraha.cz
Chapeau Rouge 7&
NEONE 7@
Jakubska 2, Old Town, Praha 1 www.chapeaurouge.cz
Bubenská 1 www.lunchmeat.cz/
Neone got its start as a pop-up party, but it’s since grown into a well-established and respected club in Prague’s electronic music scene known for their superior sound system and live gigs. Electronic music fans, this is the spot where the latest trends in the industry meet innovative artists and dedicated fans.
Radost FX 7#
Bělehradská 120, Prague 2 radostfx.cz
First opened in the early ‘90s just a few years after the Velvet Revolution, Radost FX is open Thursday to Saturday and offers the best of house, R&B and hip hop music—Rihanna even filmed one of her music videos there. Above the club is the venue’s restaurant and cafe, well-known as one of the best brunch spots in all of Prague.
Klub 007 7$
Chaloupeckého 7 www.klub007strahov.cz
Supporting underground and non-mainstream music since 1969, 007 is a legendary club on the Prague music scene. It’s history is rooted in student dissent, providing a welcoming space to students disenchanted with the former regime. 007 offers a healthy assortment of unique bands, DJs, and other musical acts. Music diversity is an emphasis: electro, indie,
SPORT‘S BAR
Retro 7%
Chapeau Rouge is a music clubs that ranks among the biggest in Prague with 3 floors, 4 bars & 3 stages. Chapeau truly has something for everyone! You may even stumble upon it all on your own: it’s in the center right behind Old Town Square and usually has some cool kids smoking a joint right outside its doors. The ground floor of Chapeau is a chill place to meet people from all over the world: travelers and expats alike. Go down one more floor and you’ll come across the dance club where international and local DJs blast out their beats playing pretty much 7 days a week with music in the main bar area being truly eclectic: everything from Balkan rhythms to drum & bass.
Harley's 7(
Dlouhá 18, 110 00 , Prague 1
Harleys is described as the coolest hell on earth. This American-style biker bar opens late and is always rockin’ and rollin’ with live DJs and music acts. It’s also in a perfect location, just a two-minute walk from Old Town Square. The entire placed is decked out in rock memorabilia ranging from Harley Davidson gear to Ramones and Jack Daniels posters.
La Loca r
Odborů 278/4, Prague 2
Chic, fashionable and a whole lotta fun! One of the very first smoke-free establishments in Prague entertains the crowds all day every day. The night is the time when true party colours of La Loca show. International vibes mixed with a scrumptious selection of sizzling drinks are a guarantee of a big night-out. Add a carefully selected music program - karaoke, 80s & 90s retro parties, DJ performances, live concerts and rooftop gatherings in the summer - and you can rest assured knowing you'll very likely to create memories to remember for a lifetime. Also, some of the most iconic pieces of art in Prague are situated at La Loca.
Café 80's 8)
You can't go wrong with 80's music. Whether you're nostaligic or just appreciative of all things "totally awesome", the two-story venue does features an 80's themed café restaurant on the first floor. But, the real story here is the basement. A nicely sized music club with an illuminated dance floor, plus a large bar and VIP lounge make it a night worthy of the MTV generation.
U Sudů 7*
Vodičkova 10, Prague 1 www.usudu.cz
U Sudu is the best of both worlds with a wine bar upstairs and an underground, cave-like labyrinth downstairs. When you walk in, don’t stop on the top level. All that is up here is a normal looking bar. Keep walking until you hit the stairs that descend into one of the coolest places to drink on Earth... It is indeed smoky, but get past that and the place is just mythic.

Tram and Metro Map
Public Transport Tips:
First let people off, before you get on. If someone elderly gets on, give up your seat. It’s not just curtious, it’s expected here. To fit in on the metro and trams wear your headphones. If you don’t have headphones, then play with your phone instead, or read a book or this magazine. If you’ve been drinking, don’t act like an idiot, even with friends.
Late Night: After midnight, trams switch to “Night Service”, which includes a whole new schedule that can be a bit confusing - especially if you’ve had a few drinks. Our recommendation - call an Uber or Liftago or use a taxi to get to your destination.

ultimate souvenir From adrenaline rushes to the obscure, activeczech delivers
BY tatiana cirisano There’s more to experience in Prague than crossing the Charles Bridge and snapping photos at the Prague Castle. ActiveCzech wants visitors to see the city from a different point of view—at the top of a bridge over the Vltava river right before bungee jumping, or maybe from the clouds, while skydiving 4,000 meters above ground. More an “experience agency” than travel agency proper, their new website aims to connect tourists with dozens of adrenaline-pumping activities, from inor surfing and skiing to bungee jumping and even driving army tanks. It’s the latest venture from the team behind Adrop.cz, a site founded in 2005 for local Czech and Slovak adventure-seekers. Now, founder Rosťa Peníška is bringing those hair-raising experiences to adrenaline junkie tourists, too. “We are opening up this world of excitement to travelers coming to the Czech Republic to enjoy something more than just historical monuments,” explains project leader Martina Beranova. “We wish to bring them real excitement, introduce Prague and the Czech Republic from a different point of view and
leave them with powerful memories that last.” It’s no surprise that friends of Rosťa like to call him “Mr. Experience.” The site’s experience “menu” features 70 activities for instantaneous online booking, each carefully-selected by the four-person team behind ActiveCzech—Rosťa and colleagues Martina, Jarka and Markéta. Rather than hunt around the web for each activity, travellers can connect directly with dozens of adventurous packages through the ActiveCzech online portal. The options range from heart-pumping to downright breathtaking. Tourists can experience things like a hike and boat ride through Bohemian Switzerland. Another popular experience is the Boeing 737 flight simulator, an exact replica of the famous aircraft that visitors can practice piloting at 270 kilometers per hour. There’s even space for a group of your friends to sit in the plane’s “business class” section and rate your piloting skills. The agency takes the activity curation process very seriously: “We try the activities ourselves,” says Martina. The team of ActiveCzech employees are really more a group of friends, united by a love for
adrenaline and unusual experiences. “We love what we do and we are super excited about it,” Martina adds. With an agency run by thrill seekers, it’s no surprise that the options tend to be adrenalinebased—think flight simulators, white water rafting and skydiving. But when it’s time to unwind, ActiveCzech also offers more relaxing options, like a trip to Prague’s beer spa, cooking classes and hot air balloon tours. One popular laid-back option? A tipsy tour through Prague on a sixteen-person bike, complimentary glasses of prosecco or beer in hand. But regardless of which level of adrenaline customers choose, ActiveCzech builds off the idea that experiences—not material trinkets—make the best tokens visitors can bring home from a new city. It’s easy to lose a marble of Bohemian glass or a chatchka purchased along the Charles Bridge, but it’s hard to forget the gripping thrill of bungee-jumping above the Vltava, or the strange relaxation of bathing in a tub of beer at Prague’s iconic beer spa. “Our motto is, ‘your memories are the best souvenirs,’” Beranova says. “Let us make your memories special.” june 2017 | THE PRAGUE VISITOR

"I study architecture here in Prague but I’m leaving it to become a baker. I’m channeling all my energy into baking. It wasn’t something that I’d just decided, it was always in me. I once read somewhere that when you’re eleven, you know what you want to do in life. I doubt it’s true for everyone but when I read that I remembered something. When I was eleven, we had to write an essay at school about what we want to become when we grow up. We had to read it in front of the whole class. You know, at eleven you’re really honest so I wrote about becoming a cook and a baker. But when I read it out loud, the whole class laughed at me. Because everyone wanted to become a doctor, an architect or a lawyer. These were the professions that also my family thought I should do. And I wrote about food! So after that I thought: Oh, that was stupid, I shouldn’t have done that! Baking was just a hobby for me, I did it at home for myself and for birthday parties of my friends. Until recently, I never thought I could do it professionally. But a few months back I 34

was helping out a friend in a café here in Prague for a week and I realized how happy I’m to work with my hands. When I see all the ingredients in front of me, see the flour, see the water, that’s the moment when I don’t think about anything else. Nothing else distracts me. I realized that I can work better with my hands than I can do with a computer mouse. It’s bit scary now because I’m about to leave something I worked seven years for, but I feel much happier now than I’ve ever been since I’ve known myself as an adult.“ "I love baking because it completely slows down your life. It made me more patient. Because you make a lot of mistakes and you have to wait a lot. Recently I’ve started to be interested in breadmaking in which you have to let the dough, the fermentation take its own time. It’s like growing a tree, letting it give its fruits. It wasn’t like that when I was working as an architect. I had to do everything by deadlines. Perfect or not perfect, it just had to be done. But now I have to wait and in the meantime,
while I’m waiting, I can enjoy life. I can come here into a park and read a book – I’m now waiting for the bread to ferment at home. That’s the thing I love about it. You’re not in competition with anyone or anything, you live your own life. And you enjoy the rewards in return. Your tastebuds feel different. Before I was so busy with work all the time that I wouldn’t taste the bread, I wouldn’t taste the butter, I wouldn’t taste the wine. Now I chew and taste and I’m like: ‚That’s a really bad wine!‘ I eat something and I completely understand: This is shit, this is bad for me, I shouldn’t be eating it! But for a lot of us who work all the time, food is just an obligation – we have to feed ourselves to sustain. It’s not a pleasure anymore. And food used to be a pleasure. Because food used to be rare. That’s the mysterious thing about food that I love so much. That why it has brought so much meaning into my life. “
