Things
to do in Prague with
KIDS
Chances are, your kids don't have the same appreciation for history and some of Prague's more sophisticated attractions. So, for their benefit, we've prepared 21 of our favorite places to let kids be kids. And, to make it easy, we've divided it up by outoor, indoor, outdoor, water, and food and drink themed places. Enioy!
1. Prague Zoo A day at the zoo has been a favorite family activity for generations and Prague Zoo is definitely one to remember. This world-famous zoo has 10km of routes to explore and has been frequented by the likes of the Jolie-Pitts (we miss you Brangelina). Just a little out of the center, the zoo is easily and cheaply accessible by public transport and offers a family ticket for 2 adults and 2 children for 600czk (that’s under $30). There are over 150 different exhibitions where you can see animals from all over the world. While the exotic animals are just out of reach, your kids can get up close and personal with domestic animals at the ‘children’s zoo’. If you get bored of that, the zoo has a huge play area to enjoy too. Website: www.zoopraha.cz/en Address:The Prague Zoological Garden U Trojskeho Zamku 120/3, 171 00 Praha 7
2. Gutovka Gutovka is your ultimate tool for entertaining teenagers. This large outdoor recreation center is packed with facilities including a skate park, climbing wall, waterpark and even mini golf. Gotovka is out of the center but there’s easy metro
access that will get you there in about 20 minutes so it’s definitely worth an adventure out of the historic center. With so much to do, you’ll keep older kids and teens well occupied and could earn yourself a few brownie points for an epic day out. It’s a seriously cool place but activities are charged separately so be sure to check the prices before promising your kids the world. Website: www.gutovka.cz/ Czech language only Address: Gutova 39, Praha 10 - Strašnice
3. Paint Ball Prague Paintball Prague is another one for the teens. It’s a little out of the way so be prepared to either rent a car or take a metro and a bus to the huge center which has a new field for players to enjoy. There are a variety of different games to be played during both the day and the night including an optional addition of archery. You can either rent privately or join open play dependent on your numbers. Regardless of how many of you there are, you can drop by on a Sunday to join in with the public play and make some holiday connections. Website: www.paintball-prague.cz/en/ Address: Výpadová 157, Praha-Zbraslav-Lahovice
4. Dětský Ostrov Dětský Ostrov literally translates as ‘children’s island’. This beautiful little urban oasis contains a playground that is completely fenced in to keep young children from falling in the water. If the kids do want to splash about, there’s a small pool for them to dip their feet and a drinking fountain if they’re thirsty. With plenty of shade, a water spraying mushroom and the cool breeze from the river, it’s a lovely place to spend time outdoors without having to worry about sun exposure and dehydration. If your kids are a bit older, they can venture to another section of the island where they’ll find volleyball and tennis courts, and basic skateboard jumps. This island truly is a paradise for kids of all ages. Address: Dětský Ostrov, Prague-Smichov -
5. DinoPark Praha What kind of park is this? A JURASSIC PARK! DinoPark Praha is the closest we’re getting to the real thing. Located on the roof of the Harfa Shopping Centre, DinoPark features life-size models of various dinosaurs, a paleontological playground with a dinosaur skeleton to be excavated, and a 4D JUNE 2018 | THE PRAGUE VISITOR

cinema. The price of admission is cheap enough when paying individually, and even cheaper when entering as a family. A family ticket for two adults and two children is just 400czk (about $20) and children under three can enter for free. The park is suitable for all ages and gives a ton of historical information.

6. Escape Rooms Escape Rooms have become increasingly popular in recent years, and nowhere more so than Prague. Especially if you’re visiting with teenagers, an Escape Room is a great way to spend an afternoon and get the family working together and bonding to solve a puzzle. Even the most conscientious parents can feel assured that their kids’ brains are still working while they’re on vacation with puzzles to challenge all abilities. The Chamber is the highest rated escape room in Prague and offers a variety of puzzles at three different Prague locations. For families with children, we’d recommend The Emperor’s Secret. This beginner’s puzzle is based on real events centering around medieval Czech King and Holy Roman Emperor, Charles IV. You can get €10 off this or any other game at The Chamber when you mention Prague Visitor. If you’d like more of a challenge for your older kids, try Elixir Mystery. This 70-minute adventure is set in a 16th-century torture chamber, where you must figure out how to steal King Rudolf’s elixir of youth. There’s 200czk off this one when you mention Prague Visitor too!
7. Illusion Art Museum and Museum of Senses Prague is absolutely jam-packed with museums. With so many to choose from, it can be hard to decide where to go for the best family day out. We’d recommend heading to one of the more unique museums like the Illusion Art Museum Prague the Museum of Senses. Right in the center of Prague, the Illusion Art Museum explores the history of illusion in art in a way that’s engaging for all the family. Guests are encouraged to touch and interact with the exhibits, ensuring even small

children can have a great time without parents having to worry. This visually gripping museum even investigates the selfie and social media, giving teens something to think about. For a chance to truly play, you can’t miss the Museum of Senses. Their displays make you part of the illusion, with challenges for the body and mind. Not only will you be having a great time, you’ll also learn about how your brain works in relation to all five senses. It’s a mind-blowing and fun experience that you’re sure to enjoy if you’re 8 or 80 years old.

7. Museum of Bricks Who doesn’t love Lego? Well Prague, quite surprising, boasts the Lego museum with the most exhibits in the entire world. There are over 2500 models in the 20 themed parts of the museum. If you can’t manage to see all of Prague on your trip, you can at least see it in miniature form with models including Prague Castle, the National Theatre, and Charles Bridge. Not only are the displays impressive and quite frankly, the coolest thing you’ll ever see, they also explore the history of Lego so you can bond with your kids and show them the toys of your own youth. It’s a great place to let your kids play with all the Lego they could dream of without fearing for your bare feet. Head to the central museum and mention Prague Visitor for 30% discount. Website: www.muzeumlega.cz Address: Národní 362/31, PSČ 110 00
9. Laser Arena Praha So forget culture, forget learning. You’re looking for something to do indoors and the main priority is fun - it has to be laser tag. Laser Arena Praha has nine different game modes and welcomes the young and the young at heart alike. The arena is super central and easy to access by foot or public transport. Your family can decide to team up or play against each other, which reveals a lot about who the family strategist is and who’s got more strength than sense. Even when you’re not playing, the arena’s Alien Vs Predator design makes it a really cool place to hang out. Luckily they’ve got a bar to relax in if the kids want to keep playing once you’re done. Be sure to bring plenty of energy to this one! Website: www.laserarenapraha.cz/en/ Address: Opatovická 160/18, 110 00 Nové Město, Czechia
12. River Boats Prague If you’d prefer to sit back and be ferried around the river, a boat tour could be the perfect way to spend the day. River Boats Prague offers various cruises of the Vltava, ranging from 1-2 hours and with food and entertainment options. All cruise tickets are discounted by a whopping 50% for children so if you decide to go for dinner too, you could end up saving money while you get the kids fed and keep them entertained. You’ll see a number of Prague’s major waterfront attractions in one go, giving you a chance to appreciate the architecture without boring the kids and giving you more time for fun family activities!
Water Zorbing
10. Hamley’s Hamley’s is a toy store located in the main shopping area of Prague, but believe us, it’s so much more than a toy store! With a carousel slap bang in the center of the store, it’s difficult to walk in and not feel like you’ve entered an amusement park. The fun doesn’t end there with a mirror maze, giant diggers, racing cars, virtual reality, interactive displays, and even a slide from the top of the store back down to the ground floor. Of course, there are plenty of toys to play with including a massive art section and building area. If you’re less interested in building models and more interested in appreciating them, you can take in the new 900m2 LEGO exhibition. Hamley’s clearly know that once you enter the store, you’ll be there for a while, so they provide a café where you can buy coffee and candy galore. But don’t worry about being stuck indoors all day; you can still make sure your kids get their nature fix by visiting Hamley’s very own butterfly house. Website:www.hamleys.cz/en/ Address: Na Příkopě 14, Prague 1
11. Rent a Pedal /Row Boat Undoubtedly the most popular thing to do on the Vltava is rent a pedalo. There are various points along the river bank to rent a vessel and head out onto the water. Designs vary from your standard pedalo to cars and swans, but if pedalos aren’t your cup of tea, most places also offer rowboats. There’s nothing better than drifting along near the national theatre and admiring Charles Bridge and Prague Castle on a sunny day. Prices and rental times vary depending on the rental place and the size or design of the boat. The average is around 200-300czk ($1015) an hour for a family of 4. A great place to rent a boat is on Slovanský Island which not only gives you perfect views of Prague, but is also a great family spot and home of the Zofin Playground. Website: www.zofin.cz/en/ Address:Slovanský ostrov, 110 00 Prague 1
Website: www.riverboatsprague.cz/en/ Address: Nábřeží na Františku / Dvořákovo nábřeží Mooring #16 (under Štefánik bridge)
13. Water Zorbing If you don’t feel like taking one of our boat options, you can simply walk out onto the water to take in views of some of Prague’s most famous architecture. Water Zorbing Prague allows you to take off across the Vltava at a run in one of their zorbing bubbles or cylinders. Bubble rental costs 200czk for a ten-minute session but believe us, that’s long enough! Water zorbing is a lot of fun but it’s a real core workout. Be prepared to fall down a lot and be prepared to laugh a lot. We can almost guarantee the kids will be better at this activity than the adults. Address: Smetanovo nábř., Praha 1,Staré Město
14. Zlute Lazne As a landlocked country, if there’s one thing the Czech Republic is not famous for, it’s beaches. However, the Zlute Lazne resort in Prague boasts an impressive manmade beach and is perfect for a family day out with its designated children’s corner. After an easy tram ride down the river from central Prague, children can safely play in pools
Hamley's
and lagoons with plastic toys and paddle boats. If they don’t want to spend the whole day in the water, there are two wooden play areas to enjoy, swing sets and climbing frames, and a large beach sandbox. In addition to their dedicated children’s area, Zlute Lazne often run a program of children’s events. The best thing about Zlute Lazne is the price. For full resort access the cost is just 80czk for adults and 50czk for children and if you just want to access the children’s corner, you pay 30czk for adults and 20czk for kids. 15. Biotop radotin Biotop Radotin is a huge outdoor swimming area and the perfect place to cool down in the summer heat! If you’re worried about chemicals, worry no more. The pool uses a natural filtration system to make sure the water is clean and healthy. There’s plenty of space out of the water too so you can throw around a Frisbee and play to your heart’s content. With a bar for food and drinks, there’s no reason not to stay all day. Biotop Radotin offers a discounted family ticket for 2 adults and 2 children to use the pool all day for just 250czk (just a little over $10). If you’re paying individually, ticket prices reduce as the day goes on so try the afternoon if you don’t think you’ll be staying long. Website: www. biotopradotin.cz Address: K Lázním 9, Praha 5 – Radotín 153 00 Prague Kids Activities – Food and Drink
16. Výtopna The Výtopna train restaurants are fantastic for families, with good food and a fun gimmick. The food is traditional Czech, but don’t worry if your child is a fussy eater as there are simpler options on the dedicated children’s menu (which also has coloring and puzzles). Your drinks are delivered by model trains that follow a track across the tables around the restaurant. You often have to book to ensure your table, but with two city center restaurants to choose from, you’re likely to get in. Since March 2018, children get a free Výtopna souvenir train ticket, with adults paying a 25czk track maintenance fee for theirs. Perfect for train (or Thomas) enthusiasts! 17. Vozovna - Stromovka Vozovna is the perfect place to eat if you’re planning a full day of family activities. This delightful restaurant is situated in the heart of Stromovka park and has space to eat both indoors and outside. The park is enormous, with natural features, zip lines, playgrounds and even a water play area to explore. The park is close to the Výstaviště Holešovice exhibition site, with various other activities to enjoy including an aquarium, planetarium and seasonal funfair. What makes this restaurant so special is its 16

personal Kastanek playground which is one of the best in the whole park. While Vozovna doesn’t have the most extensive children’s menu, it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for a full day in the sun. Website: www.vozovna-stromovka.cz/ Address: Restaurace Vozovna – Stromovka Kralovska obora 2, Praha 7 Bubeneč
18. Bohemia Boards and Brews Feeling nostalgic for the days when family bonding meant sitting around the table and playing a board game? Bohemia Board and Brews is the perfect place to go old-school and play a board game with your kids. The cozy bar stocks a huge variety of classic and contemporary board games for adults and children. Although they don’t have a child-specific menu, they do have a range of food options (an inordinate amount of cheese included) featuring some milder flavors for more delicate palates. Best of all, parents can grab a guilt-free beer knowing that they’re spending quality time with their kids. This charming bar is the perfect evening hideaway from one of those Czech summer storms. Website: www.bohemiabandb.com/ Address: Charkovská 441/18, Praha 10-Vršovice,
19. Bowling Celnice This one is a bit of a cheat because Bowling Celnice is absolutely a bowling alley, but they do make a killer pizza! Bowling is a great way to spend an afternoon with the family and can be enjoyed by parents and kids of all ages. With food that goes above and beyond the expected bowling bar snacks, it’s a great way to spend lunchtime too. Bowling Celnice opens at 12 pm and with the fee for playing increasing as the day goes on, we suggest you head over handy. If you visit for lunch, you can bowl for the lowest rate until 3 pm. Definitely worth a visit if you can SPARE the time. Website: www.bowlingcelnice.cz/ Address: Millennium Plaza, V Celnici 10, Nové Město
20. Amorino Okay so this one doesn’t have any special play area or gimmick, it just has really good gelato. What kid doesn’t love gelato? Amorino is a gourmet gelato parlor serving up exactly what you need to cool down on a hot summer’s day. The flavors range from childfriendly chocolate and banana to the more grown-up coffee flavor. In addition to the aforementioned gelato, you can get a range of sweet treats and drinks including sorbet tea and the most magnificent milkshake you’ve ever seen. Your vacation is for the entire family so there’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to treat the kids to a fancy ice cream that you’ll enjoy too! Treat yo self. Website: www.amorino.com/ Address:Malostranské nám. 38/24, Malá Strana

M1 Lounge
Masná 1, Prague 1 www.m1lounge.com M1 Lounge is a favorite of locals, expats and even passing-through celebrities, and it’s not hard to see why. The club’s well-known team of skilled DJs keep the place pumping with a mixture of R&B, hip-hop, electro and dance music until the wee hours of morning, and the upscale, luxurious atmosphere makes every night feel like a celebration. Number 69 on the map.
James Dean
V kolkovně 922/1 www.jamesdean.cz/ Okay, we admit that this one’s kind of kitschy— but only in the best way. Named for the iconic rebel and actor, the bar has a classic 1950’s American diner feel turned nightclub late night. Number 70 on the map.
NEONE
Bubenská 1 www.lunchmeat.cz/ Neone got its start as a pop-up party, but it’s since grown into a well-established and respected club in Prague’s electronic music scene known for their superior sound system and live gigs. Electronic music fans, this is the spot where the latest trends in the industry meet innovative artists and dedicated fans. Number 72 on the map.
Radost FX
Bělehradská 120, Prague 2 www.radostfx.cz
but worth the trek. Number 67 on the map.
First opened in the early ‘90s just a few years after the Velvet Revolution, Radost FX is open Thursday to Saturday and offers the best of house, R&B and hip hop music—Rihanna even filmed one of her music videos there. Above the club is the venue’s restaurant and cafe, wellknown as one of the best brunch spots in all of Prague. Number 73 on the map.
Meet Factory
Retro
Ke Sklárně 3213/15 www.meetfactory.cz
Francouzská 75/4, Prague 2 www.retropraha.cz
This music club, art gallery, theater and cinema
One for the curious bored or brave. Retro has become the Czech home of hard house. Their club nights are full to the rafters until the small hours while go-go dancers whip the energetic clubbers into a house driven frenzy. A very
techno to reggae. The club’s psychedelic, industrial décor is a sight to see in itself—every piece of the building, from the walls to the ceiling, is constructed to move and pulsate with the music. It’s one of the most unique experiences you’ll have with nightlife in Praha, but you might want to grab an Uber. Cross Club is a bit out of the city’s center,
is the brainchild of David Černý, the artist responsible for some of Prague’s most famous (and controversial) modern art. A refurbished warehouse stuffed between a motorway and
friendly atmosphere with smiling faces and sweating brows as far as the eye can see, there are more locals and fewer tourists here than some of the other large clubs with amazing DJ’s, lasers, and vibes. Dress code is free and easy, flamboyant if you’re feeling daring. Number 75 on the map.
Chapeau Rouge
Jakubska 2, Old Town www.chapeaurouge.cz Chapeau Rouge is a music clubs that ranks among the biggest in Prague with 3 floors, 4 bars & 3 stages. Chapeau truly has something for everyone! You may even stumble upon it all on your own: it’s in the center right behind Old Town Square The ground floor of Chapeau is a chill place to meet people from all over the world: travelers and expats alike. Number 77 on the map.
Café 80's
V Kolkovně 909/6 You can't go wrong with 80's music. Whether you're nostaligic or just appreciative of all things "totally awesome", the two-story venue does features an 80's themed café restaurant on the first floor. But, the real story here is the basement. A nicely sized music club with an illuminated dance floor, plus a large bar and VIP lounge make it a night worthy of the MTV generation. Number 80 on the map.
Klub Joe's (Limonádový Joe) Revoluční 655/1 www.klubjoe.cz
Named "Lemonade Joe's" after a popular Czech film, Klub Joe's is one of Prague's oldest clubs. Recently reconstructed, it looks amazing for it's 24 years. The highlight for us is the retractable roof for drinks under the stars. Number 76 .
U Sudů
Vodičkova 10, Prague 1 www.usudu.cz
Fashion Club
U Sudu is the best of both worlds with a wine bar upstairs and an underground, cave-like labyrinth downstairs. When you walk in, don’t stop on the top level. All that is up here is a normal looking bar. Keep walking until you hit the stairs that descend into one of the coolest places to drink on Earth... It is indeed smoky, but get past that and the place is just mythic. Number 78 on the map.
Harley's
8 náměstí Republiky www.f-club.cz This place is continuously rated as one of the best clubs in Prague, and it’s no wonder why. With local and international DJ’s, bands and different themed parties on the weekends, Fashion Club is perfect for a great night. Their original cocktails combined with one of the best views of the city- on the roof of Kotva makes Fashion Club a must-see attraction. Number 82 on the map.
Dlouhá 18, 110 00 , Prague 1 Harleys is described as the coolest hell on earth. This American-style biker bar opens late and is always rockin’ and rollin’ with live DJs and music acts. It’s also in a perfect location, just a two-minute walk from Old Town Square. Number 79 on the map.
La Loca
Odborů 278/4, Prague 2 www.laloca.cz Chic, fashionable and a whole lotta fun! One of the very first smoke-free establishments in Prague entertains the crowds all day every day. The night is the time when true party colours of La Loca show. International vibes mixed with a scrumptious selection of sizzling drinks are a guarantee of a big night-out. Add a carefully selected music program - karaoke, 80s & 90s retro parties, DJ performances, live concerts and rooftop gatherings in the summer - and you can rest assured knowing you'll very likely to create memories to remember for a lifetime. Number 84 on the map.
Vzorkovna
Národní 339/11, 110 00 Staré Město Too cool for a website Part underground labyrinth, part club, part local hangout this place is the hip wierd side of Prague. Affectionately referred to as “Dog Bar” by it's largely 20-something hipster patrons because of the giant dog that roams the bar, this is not your typical place-for-a-pint. Drinks are pre-paid for thru pre-paid bracelets. Come for a unique experience unlike anything else. Number 77 on the map.
Industry
Malá Štupartská 3, 110 00 Staré Město www.industryprague.com Prague's newest venue is a London style club with shisha and tobacco and the highest quality sound systems playing the newest hip hop. Located right in the center of Prague, its worth a visit for sure! Number 83 on the map.

Korunní and wine make a good pair
.
First let people off, before you get on. If someone elderly gets on, give up your seat. It’s not just curtious, it’s expected here. To fit in on the metro and trams wear your headphones. If you don’t have headphones, then play with your phone instead, or read a book or this magazine. If you’ve been drinking, don’t act like an idiot, even with friends.
Public Transport Tips:
Tram and Metro Map Late Night: After midnight, trams switch to “Night Service”, which includes a whole new schedule that can be a bit confusing - especially if you’ve had a few drinks. Our recommendation - call an Uber or Liftago or use a taxi to get to your destination.

PRAGUE
Cocktail guide The best cocktail bars in Prague (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).
Tretter's
V kolkovne 3, Praha 1 www.tretters.cz The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years. So it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. Number 82 on the map. +420 224 811 165 for Reservations
Parlour
Krakovská 15, Praha 1 www.parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. Number 84 on the map. +420 777 200 015 for Reservations.
L'Fleur
V Kolkovně 920/5, 1, Praha www.lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Mucha-inspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which your bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list. Number 94 on the map. +420 734 255 665 for Reservations
Anonymous Bar
Michalská 12, Praha 1 www.anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile. The bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender your likes and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the secret drink menu printed in UV ink and read with a small blacklight. Reservations are taken only until 9pm. Number 93 on the map. +420 608 280 069 for Reservations.
Le Valmont
Uhelný trh 414/9, Praha 1 www.levalmont.cz The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Milos Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Reservations are all but required, since the 100-capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly. Number 90 on the map. +420 224 267 266 for Reservations.
Black Angel's
Staroměstské nám. 29, Praha 1 www.blackangels.cz Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Old Town astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. With high cellar ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. +420 224 213 807 for Reservations.
Bar and Books
Manesova 64, Praha 2 and Týnská 19, Praha 1 Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the more casual in Manisova and slightly more formal in Týnská). The bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (though mostly for visual aesthetics). Number 85 and 86 on the map.
Bonvivant's CTC
Bartolomějská 305, P1 Bonvivant's CTC isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and has a cool 1950’s feel with mid-century wood furnishings, a pressed tin ceiling and a checkered floor. Bartenders are a virtual encyclopedia of drink possibilities and suggestions based on your tastes. +420 775 331 862 for Reservations.
Bugsy's
Pařížská 1068/10, Praha 1 www.bugsysbar.cz Bugsy’s is another bar with a great history, popping up just after the Velvet Revolution. Their one constant has been their attention to detail and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands in stock, as well as over 90 single malt whiskeys and 100 types of rum. Number 95 on the map. +420 224 810 287 For Reservations.
Hemingway's
Alchemist Bar
Karolíny Světlé 26, Praha 1
Provaznická 1, Praha 1
www.hemingwaybar.cz Chances are, if you’ve asked around, you’ve already been recommended to Hemingway’s Bar. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. So reservations are recommended. Number 97 on the map. +420 773 974 764 for Reservations.
www.thealchemistbar.cz A relative newcomer on the scene, Achemist is turning out quality prohibition style drinks in their ornate classicly decorated location at the bottom of Wenclases Square. Number 98 on the map. +420 251 510 940 for Reservations.
Cash Only Bar Liliova 3, Prague 1
www.cashonlybar.cz Just around the corner from its older sibling Hemingway’s, this little gem is making its own name with cocktails like Pin-Up Martini, made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne. It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and, you guessed it—the bar doesn’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way, they do serve amazing hot dogs. Number 89 on the map. No Reservations.
Crazy Daisy
Václavské nám. 4, Praha 1 www.crazydaisy.cz Somewhat hidden at the bottom of Wenceslas Square, this one of our favourite new hotspots. First republic style interior, bar staff dressed the part and videomapping on the walls that pushes reality - it feels like you're in The Great Gatsby. !Number 99 on the map. +420 273 130 486 for Reservations.
Oblaca
Žižkov Television Tower, Praha 3 www.oblaca.cz High atop the Žižkov Television Tower, Oblaca is making better cocktails through science. Oblaca’s Aleš J. Števlík, genius mixologist gone mad scientist (maybe that explains the drink served in a test tube). 92 on the map. + 420 210 320 086
La Bodeguita del Medio Kaprova 19/5, Praha 1
www.labodeguitadelmedio.cz With it's colonial-style interior straight from Old Havana, La Bodeguita is on point. In addition to great food, bar staff have perfected their craft with regional drinks, from the Cuba Libre to the Mojito. Number 97 on the map. +420 224 813 922 for Reservations.
California Republic Belgická 275/24, Praha 2-Vinohrady www.california-republic.cz The California Republic Bar is a splash of Californian spirit in the center of Prague. Stand up Comedy night every Second Sunday of the month. Karaoke every Monday night. Find it on our map at Number 96.
Woodhouse Vinohradská 32 www.wood-house.cz Signature cocktails meets a variey of bespoke sishas. The atmosphere is crafted to calm you; the smell of fresh wood, a wooden house surrounded by trees, a heated shining sun. Woodhouse is a great place to spend an evening with friends or make new ones. Find them on the map at Number 88.
Cohiba Atmosphere Kaprova 19/5, 110 00 Staré Město www.cohibaatmosphere.cz Referred to as the Havana of Prague, this cigar club more than just premium cigars. Refined cocktails, fine wine quality spirits are all served in this classy setting. The sleek design of the bar, combined with the top-notch service of the bartenders makes this the perfect spot for a quality drink. Find them on the map at Number 81.
Hoffa Senovážné nám. 980/22, Praha 1 www.hoffa.cz Located in the heart of the city, close to the city center sit down at the bar and prepare for one of their signature cocktails served with fresh ingredients by knowledgeable bartenders. There are many nights when they have live music playing in the industrial chic space. This place is non-smoking, easy to find near public transportation and serves some of the best drinks in the city. Find them on the map at Number 80.

The Price family are not as mad as your family but they come close. Bob and Fran are forced, as parents, to deal with a broken heart, a crumbling marriage, sexual identity and criminal behaviour. But like in any family, the confrontations are hilarious, loving and cruel in equal measure. Every parent will tell you insanity is hereditary; you get it from your children. But every child wonders, since having a piano does not make you a pianist, why should having children make you a parent?

Power structures are covered with the prettiest decorations, inequality is dressed in pink, harassment wears a smile. You can easily get lost and follow the common opinion. But is what you choose to believe really what’s going on? Can you see behind the masks?” Carnival

BEER GARDENS [including one wine garden]
By Auburn Scallon
Beer gardens combine two of the Czech Republic’s greatest passions, beer and nature, which makes these outdoor spaces the perfect places to experience local culture and enjoy the Prague sunshine.
For Gorgeous Views:
Letna Beer Garden
Under one wooden picnic bench, you’ll find neighborhood dogs lounging patiently at their owners’ feet, taking a break from a walk through Letna Park. At the next table, a group of international students are likely discussing how to say “cheers” in their native languages. Along the railing, travelers and Instagram fans take turns capturing panoramic views of Old Town and the Vltava River or snapping selfies. Every table is covered in plastic cups of Gambrinus, alongside an occasional cider or shots of liquor. Be warned – although it looks like a public park, visitors are not allowed to bring their own drinks or bottles of wine, so grab a foam-topped cup of the local stuff and enjoy the view. How to Get There: If you don’t mind a hike, take the 6, 8, 15 or 26 trams to Dlouhá Třída, cross the bridge and climb the stairs to the top of the hill. For a gentler path, take trams 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 12, 14, 25 or 26 to Letenské náměstí and enter from the back of Letna Park.
To Sit Back and Relax:
Hospůdka Na Hradbách
This lesser-known beer garden is hidden in plain sight, tucked behind the Rotunda of St. Martin in the Vyšehrad complex. The vibe is mellow and family-friendly. Don’t be surprised to find baby strollers parked beside many of the picnic tables surrounding a children’s play area and small open field. Drop by after a visit to the nearby Gothic Church of Saints Peter and Paul, and toast the Czech legends like composers Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana and Art Nouveau artist Alfons Mucha, just down the road in the Vyšehrad cemetery. Hospůdka Na Hradbách serves a wide variety of food and beverages, including grilled meats and sausages, Pilsner and Kozel beer, cider, wine, cocktails, and homemade lemonade. How to Get There: Take the red metro line C to the Vyšehrad stop and follow the signs towards the Vyšehrad complex, which is roughly a ten-minute walk. june 2017 | THE PRAGUE VISITOR 13
For a Rowdy Crowd:
Riegrovy Sady
You can generally hear the crowd at Riegrovy Sady before you can see them, particularly if there is an international sports match on the outdoor projector screen. This 1,400-seat enclosed area inside Reigrovy Sady park is a lively, crowded, outdoor experience that is popular with locals and expats from the surrounding Vinohrady neighborhood. The bar serves Pilsner, Gambrinus, Kozel and cider on tap, plus imported bottled beers, wine, shots, cocktails and cola, and a menu of gilled meats and bar snacks. When you need a break from the crowds, head down the park path to the grassy hill where quieter crowds gather to watch the sun set over the Prague Castle. How to Get There: Reigrovy Sady park is a short walk from the Jiřího z Poděbrad stop on the green metro line A or the Vinohradská tržnice stop on trams 1, 11, and 13.
To Get a Glimpse of Local Life:
Žižkov Beer Garden
If you’re willing to stray a little farther off the beaten path, you’ll find this laidback local favorite on the edge of Prague’s Žižkov neighborhood. Dogs and kids run freely through wide open fields of dirt and grass while the adults chat over glasses of Staropramen beer – including a few lighter fruit-flavored options – in the shade of umbrellas. Techno remixes of pop hits from recent decades float through the air, giving the scene an easygoing, backyard BBQ kind of vibe. While you’re in the neighborhood, take a walk to the top of Vitkov Hill to see the National Monument and massive equestrian statue of Jan Žižka (who the area is named for) or take a five-minute walk to the local art house cinema, Kino Aero, and catch an evening movie. How to Get There: Take trams 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 23, 24, 25, or 26 to the Biskupcova stop and cross the intersection to enter the garden.
To Be Part of the Moment:
Náplavka
One of Prague’s most popular outdoor spots doesn’t exactly qualify as a “garden”, but that doesn’t stop locals and visitors from filling every inch of concrete along the riverbank known as Náplavka. In May 2017, The New York Times named it one of their “10 Favorite Places on European Rivers, Lakes and Coastlines.” Farmer’s markets draw huge crowds on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Beer, wine, and food festivals often fill the space on weekends throughout the summer. Every night of the week offers a variety of beer stands and boat pubs lining the banks alongside young couples dangling their legs over the river’s edge, and you’ll often find live music or DJs spinning a soundtrack to Prague’s hippest outdoor scene. How to Get There: Take the yellow metro line B to the Karlovo Náměstí stop and exit the station towards Palackého náměstí. Trams 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 12, 16, 17, 20, and 21 also go to Palackého náměstí. Then cross the street and head down any staircase or ramp to the riverbank.
For the Wine Lovers:
Grebovka
Prague may be best known for its beer, but there is an entire neighborhood, Vinohrady, named for the vineyards that used to cover the area. These days, wine fans congregate in Havlíčkovy sady park to share a bottle of local vino under a gazebo while surrounded by the 14-century Grébovka vineyards, which were founded by Charles IV. Afterwards, take a stroll through Havlíčkovy sady park, dotted with architectural gems just asking to be photographed, including an ornate stone grotto and fountain and an Italian Renaissance-style villa. How to Get There: Havlíčkovy sady park is an easy downhill walk from the Náměstí Mírustop on the green metro line A, or tram stop Jana Masaryka on the 4, 13, or 22.
Fun Local Beer Facts • To toast in the Czech Republic, you should say “Na zdraví” (pronounced NAH-straw-vee) which means “to health”. • It’s important to look each individual person in the eyes as you toast and never cross arms to reach another person. • Czech beer is typically served with a think foamy head on the top of the glass or cup, which is a sign of the freshness and quality of the beer. • In most pubs and restaurants, beer is cheaper than a bottle of water. • Czechs are some of the biggest beer drinkers in the world, averaging over 140 liters a year per capita (and that includes babies and grandparents).

I moved to Prague after I got married, I’ve been living here for more than fifty years. And I love the city. With my husband we used to visit a lot of historic sights – in the Old Town, Lesser Town or the Hradčany area – and cultural events. Especially concerts because my husband was a musician. And it was beautiful, despite the times. It was a kind of a escape from the reality for us. For instance, you could hear Antonín Dvořák’s ‚Stabat Mater‘ every Easter in the Saint Jacob’s church. It was a piece that couldn’t be heard elsewhere because of its spiritual dimension. Which was not allowed back then. But when you were looking for something, you eventually found it. And then you could immerse yourself into the sound of the organ and forget for a while about what was going on in the society. It had far-reaching consequences when you were religious. I was not allowed to do professional work, not allowed to have a leading position, not allowed to teach at school. I had 54

a teaching qualification for grammar schools but I couldn’t teach anywhere. My husband was a great music virtuoso but since he performed in a church he couldn’t play abroad. On two occasions I was even taken to Bartolomějská street, into the headquarters of secret police, for interrogation. But I don’t want to talk about that. I had to deal with such things since I was young. They didn’t want to allow me to study at a grammar school but I fought for it. I ran round all kinds of bureaus, I wrote letters. Ironically, it was a serious illness that helped me to achieve it in the end – a doctor forbade them to put me into a vocational school. And so it was the beginning of 1950′s, I studied at a grammar school, I even got them to let me learn latin instead of descriptive geometry, but it used to happen that a professor approached me in a hallway and started to rip my little cross from my neck. I told him: ‚That’s mine, that’s none of your business!‘ I didn’t force anything to anybody, I didn’t try
to persuade anybody. On the following day I took the little cross with me again – but I already had it hidden under my collar.“ „In the 1980s me and my husband didn’t have much faith that things might change. But in November 1989 we went to Rome for a canonization ceremony of Saint Agnes of Bohemia and we started to feel that something was about to happen. We returned back to Prague on November 15th and the events started to unfold on 17th. We helped to establish ‚Citizen’s Forum‘ in our district, we attended all kinds of gatherings. On 25th November there was a mass held in St. Vitus Cathedral which was officiated by cardical Tomášek. It was fantastic – the cathedral was full of people, there were thousands, standing all the way from Prague Castle to Pohořelec. When everybody started to sing the St. Wenceslas Chorale, I felt otherworldly.“
