The world’s best Staropramen is served in the same building where it’s made. It doesn’t get any better than the Staropramen that we serve. Twice a week, the brewmasters from the Staropramen brewery come by and assure that it’s of the upmost quality and standards. In fact, we even have an emergency hotline straight to the brewmaster. How did we get so lucky? It’s based on our history. Na Verandách has been around since nearly the inception of the brewery, and our longstanding friendship shows in everything we do. From our recent renovation which showcases brewery elements in our design, to our thoughtfully crafted menu which perfectly pairs the highest quality Czech cuisine with it’s beer counterpart, Na Verandách is proud of what we do. We invite you to come and see for yourself. Stop by for a pint and a great meal. We hope to see you soon.

Our team will provide travellers with free, real, unbiased Prague recommendations and tips on how to avoid pitfalls and tourist traps. It's one more step in our dream of helping people be Travellers, not Tourists. If you find yourself on Nerudova, stop in and say hello. CAFÉ SOCIETY REVISITED
FIRST REPUBLIC ERA CAFÉS IN PRAGUE
CAFÉ LOUVRE Národní 22
There are seemingly thousands of cafés here in Prague—most of them with a new-age sense of chic that we know and love. But older establishments come with a particular charm that you just can’t get at a juice bar or vegan café. Here, famous socialites and intellectuals of the First Republic like Franz Kafka would go to sip cocktails, debate with friends or simply get their daily news. These cafés ultimately survived communism, two world wars, and three country names without losing their original turn-of-the-century style. Here’s six of the surviving traditional cafés that exist in Prague.
This Vienna-style coffee house has been standing for over a century—since 1902. Their menu offers local favorites along with tastes from other European counties, and even America. Café Louvre has a cosmopolitan atmosphere, while still maintaining the specific charm of old school Prague. Its unique hospitality appealed to the likes of famous intellectuals from Franz Kafka to Albert Einstein. Get lost in time, and pay a visit to the Café Louvre.
CAFÉ SAVOY Vítězná 5
Luminously modern with an old-school touch; Café Savoy will give you the best of both worlds. The cafe has been restored from its original opening in 1893.The showpiece in this café is the ceiling, which is remnant of Czech art nouveau-ist Alphons Mucha. Order anything from an elegant breakfast to hearty roast meats, and top it off with a sweet delicacy baked in-house. Walk through the corridor by the counter to find a window overlooking the bakers at work.

CAFÉ LUCERNA Štěpánská 61
Café Lucerna, or “Café Lantern” in English, is a 20th century eatery with dim lighting and a mysterious atmosphere that matches the building’s rustic appeal. Along with Lucerna Music Bar and Lucerna Cinema, Café Lucerna is part of Lucerna Palace, a complex built in the early 1900s in the late art nouveau style. Its floor to ceiling windows look out on to the Lucerna arcade, as well as David Černy’s famous sculpture of St. Wenceslas riding his horse upside down. For mellow feels and wacky views, try this café.
CAFÉ SLAVIA
Smetanovo nábřeží 1012/2 Originally established in the 1920s, Café Slavia has more of a modern vibe than the other old-school café of Prague. It served as a well-known gathering place of the literary community of the 20th century; pupils include Franz Kafka and Rainer Maria Rilke. Dine and discuss art and politics with the locals, while enjoying a stunning riverside view. .

THE PRAGUE VISITOR | MARCH 2017
CAFÉ GRAND ORIENT Ovocný trh 19
Just a few blocks from Old Town Square is the only fully cubist café (down to the coat hooks) in Prague, and maybe even the world. It is located on the first floor of the House of the Black Madonna, a cubist structure created by renowned architect Josef Gočár. It maintains a sort of diner charm, with splashes of green to complement its cubist furnishings. It was originally established in 1912, but closed when cubism became unfashionable in the ‘20s. It reopened in 2005, and was renovated back to its original style. Stop in to dine from a classic café menu, and grab a seat on the balcony for a charming view of Celetná.
CAFÉ IMPERIAL Na Poříčí 15
Café Imperial is an art deco eatery with an upscale vibe and highend dishes. Its interior design is over-the-top in the best way; the ceiling and furnishings are a mosaic of ceramic tile and sculpted porcelain that complements its swanky 20th-century ambience. Enjoy breakfast all day at Café Imperial, and cocktails as the sun turns to moon. The cuisine is crafted by celebrity chef Zdeněk Pohlreich, so you’re guaranteed a next-level dining experience.

Galerie La Femme: Beautiful Homework
Miroslav Lipina of Galerie La Femme
BY TATIANA CIRISANO Women have served as eternal muse for artists throughout history, inspiring the likes of Salvador Dali, Matisse, Johannes Vermeer and countless others. So prevalent is the female figure even in contemporary art, that in 2000, Miroslav Lipina opened a gallery just for the topic. Galerie La Femme, a tiny, two-room art space on Bilkova street in Old Town, is crammed with work by both emerging and esteemed local Czech artists that pays homage to femininity, among a range of other topics. Here, as the name implies, women are portrayed in every corner available through paint and canvas, clay, bronze and other materials. “Women always were a big inspiration for artists,” explains Lipina through translated Czech. “When you see art history, masterpieces are based on women.” 12
THE PRAGUE VISITOR | MARCH 2017
It’s true—take Edouard Manet’s controversial “Olympia” or Johannes Vermeer’s iconic “The Girl With the Pearl Earring.” And though the French may have coined the phrase “Cherchez la femme,” or “look for the woman,” this Czech gallery brings it to life. In a series of new, untitled works by Michaela Žemličková, the female figure is rendered with the single stroke of a black line; one figure playing the violin, another lounging inside a martini glass. These may be displayed in the same space as “Eva, who surrenders,” a new, sixfoot tall bronze sculpture by famous artist and Medal of Merit award winner Olbram Zoubek that depicts a woman curving forward to look down at her feet. In keeping with its focus on the female figure, most of the art at Galerie La Femme doesn’t leave much to the imagination. Don’t be surprised if you’re met with female breasts, behinds and, well, you get the idea. In Antonín
Černý’s “Poctivá pětka” (“Honest Five”), a new painting in the gallery, the viewer is confronted head-on with a side view of a woman’s breast— part of the gallery’s upcoming exhibition “La Dolce Vita,” which opens March 8. But despite its title, Galerie La Femme doesn’t just focus on women. Over the 17 years since its opening, the gallery has expanded its reach to welcome other themes, and even hosts foreign art symposiums in places as far as Brazil, Ecuador and Canada. “It would be a pity to limit paintings only to one topic,” Lipina explains. The gallery also plays a direct part in the creation of art through its “Homework” project. It’s exactly what it sounds like: Galerie La Femme offers artists a yearly homework assignment, in which they create a work of art based on a specific theme. The first assignment, “A Small Homage to One Photograph,” began in 2003 and challenged artists to pay homage to a single photograph of
A few of the pieces from the "La Dolce Vita" exhibition starting this month on March 8. The gallery assigns "homework" under a specific theme and lets the artist's creativity take over. Above: Boris Jirků - Ve vanÿ s pivem Above, right: Zdenÿk Janda, La Dolce vita At right: Jitka Kopejtková , Fanta Far right: Dita Perrier, Dolce Vita
a woman looking out of a window (Jan Lipina’s 1977 “Looking Westward”). Galerie La Femme received some 60 submissions. The gallery has held 22 Homework exhibitions since, often drawing themes from important events or anniversaries, like the anniversary of the creation of Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa.” Other times, artists are asked to draw inspiration from a famous figure, like French singer and actress Edith Piaf, who was the focus of a Homework exhibition in 2003. But this year, curator Olga Václavková admits that the theme—”La Dolce Vita,” or the “Sweet Life”—was chosen rather “prosaically.” “When I was thinking about the topic, I had big sweet tooth,” Václavková says. “So I thought about sweet things, then it occurred to me the topic ‘Dolce Vita.’” She admits, though, that the “La Dolce Vita” assignment does get some inspiration from Federico Fellini’s 1960 film of the same title.
So far, submissions include a collage-like piece juxtaposing female figures and guitars (Bohumil Eliáš Jr.), a surreal painting that involves a horse made out of bread and a figure wearing what appears to be the Leaning Tower of Pisa as a hat (Zdeněk Janda), and of course, this month’s cover (Milan Hencl). The full exhibit is on view March 8 through March 31. Interestingly, Lipina got his own start in the art world not as an artist or curator, but as a mechanical engineer. After moving to Prague in 1979, Lipina found a job installing exhibitions at a gallery in the city. “I always liked art and cultural things a lot,” Lipina says. “I wanted to work in some cultural field… I found many friends among artists and installed and produced many exhibitions.” Opportunity came in 2000, when one of Lipina’s colleagues mentioned that a nearby gallery was going to close. Lipina took over, and Galerie La Femme was born.
While small, Lipina says the cosy, intimate space serves as an asset. With such limited area to exhibit art, each artist and their work is carefully chosen, and visitors feel more connected to the owner. “When visitors come to us, they feel family and a kind atmosphere,” Lipina adds. “We like to talk with our visitors, to share with them an interest in paintings.” In a sense, Galerie La Femme is a family. Lipina’s right hand in the gallery is his daughter, Mona, who as an artist herself creates unusual sculptures of nature and animals. “We do really like our job, this art and meeting with our visitors at our gallery,” Lipina says. “That is why they also like to return, to see us again.”
La Dolce Vita is on view from March 8 through March 31 at Galerie La Femme, Bílkova 2, Praha 1. MARCH 2017 | THE PRAGUE VISITOR

TRAM & METRO MAP Helpful Hint for Visitors: To look like a local on the Metro, wear your headphones. If you don’t have headphones, then play with your phone instead, or read a book or this magazine. If you’ve been drinking, just don’t act like an idiot.
Hipster Crossing
COCKTAIL GUIDE The best cocktail bars in Prague( (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).
Tretter's 8@
V kolkovne 3, Praha 1 +420 224 811 165 www.tretters.cz
The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years. So it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. The drinks are incredible – custom cocktails and meticulously made classics, some with a new twist. Tretter’s gets absolutely packed, sometimes out of nowhere. The trick is a reservation, so you’ll want to call ahead.
Parlour 8$
Krakovská 15, Praha 1 +420 777 200 015 www.parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. The good news is you don’t have to worry about finding a menu in English—there is no menu. Instead, your bartender will ask what you like and offer suggestions from there.
L'Fleur 9$
V Kolkovně 920/5, 1, Praha +420 734 255 665 www.lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Mucha-inspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which your bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list.
Anonymous Bar 9# Michalská 432/12, Praha 1 +420 608 280 069
www.anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile. The bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender your likes and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the secret drink menu printed in UV ink and read with a small blacklight. Reservations are taken only until 9pm.
Prolog 8*
Nádražní 57/108, Praha 5 +420 775 005 007 www.prologbar.cz
Bar and Books 8%8^
Cash Only Bar 8(
Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the more casual in Manisova and slightly more formal in Týnská). The bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (though mostly for visual aesthetics). The cocktails here are serious business, and if you’re looking for a nice Cuban to go with your drink, this is the place to be.
Just around the corner from its older sibling Hemingway’s, this little gem is making its own name with cocktails like Pin-Up Martini, made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne. It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and, you guessed it— the bar doesn’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way, they do serve amazing hot dogs.
Manesova 64, Praha 2 and Týnská 19, Praha 1
Bonvivant's CTC 8&
Prolog is about attention to detail, and they’ve clearly put thought into every aspect of their work. Take the drink menu. An American Physician weighed patients just before and after death in 1907, concluding the weight of the soul to be 21 grams—a moment that inspired Prolog’s 21-drink menu, which serves a reminder to patrons to celebrate life. Seven of those 21 drinks are named after the Seven Deadly Sins.
Bartolomějská 305, Praha 1 +420 775 331 862
Bonvivant's CTC isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and has a cool 1950’s feel with mid-century wood furnishings, a pressed tin ceiling and a checkered floor. Bartenders are a virtual encyclopedia of drink possibilities and suggestions based on your tastes. Incidentally, the “CTC” in the bar’s title actually stands for cocktail tapas café, and it hits the mark on each one, serving some pretty damn tasty dishes and coffee as well.
Le Valmont 9)
Bugsy's 9%
Le Valmont is a newcomer, just opened in Spring 2016. The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Milos Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Just take note of the strict dress code at Le Valmont— no hats, hoodies, shorts, tank tops or sandals. Reservations are all but required, since the 100-capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly.
Bugsy’s is another bar with a great history, popping up just after the Velvet Revolution. Their one constant has been their attention to detail and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands in stock, as well as over 90 single malt whiskeys and 100 types of rum.

Pařížská 1068/10 - Praha 1 +420 224 810 287 www.bugsysbar.cz
Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Old Town astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. With high cellar ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. The only downside to Black Angels is the influx of tourists which can pack the place, especially groups.
Chances are, if you’ve asked around, you’ve already been recommended to Hemingway’s Bar. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. So reservations are recommended.

Oblaca 9@
Žižkov Television Tower Mahlerovy sady 2699/1, Praha 3 + 420 210 320 086 www.oblaca.cz
High atop the Žižkov Television Tower, Oblaca is making better cocktails through science. Oblaca’s Aleš J. Števlík, genius mixologist gone mad scientist (maybe that explains the drink served in a test tube). Števlík deploys molecular mixology in his cocktail designs, exploring the physical and chemical transformations of ingredients that occur when making a cocktail. And what better laboratory for Števlík to create his unconventional concoctions than high above Prague in one of the most unconventional buildings in Europe.
La Bodeguita del Medio 9&
Kaprova 19/5, Praha 1 +420 224 813 922 www.labodeguitadelmedio.cz
With it's colonial-style interior straight from Old Havana, La Bodeguita is on point. In addition to great food, bar staff have perfected their craft with regional drinks, from the Cuba Libre to the Mojito. There's a live Cuban band several nights of the week and an amazing cigar selection as well (La Bodeguita was one of the first cigar bars in Prague). Bodeguita is synonymous with great entertainment, Mojitos, wild parties, dancing, original gastronomy and unforgettable experiences.

CLUB GUIDE
Our Quick Guide to where all the cool kids go AFTER MIDNIGHT
Roxy 6%
Dlouhá 33, Prague 1
The Roxy is one of Prague’s oldest and bestknown clubs. The venue was a popular theatre and ballroom in the 1920’s, but now you’ll find drum and bass, house, techno, and other modern styles on the dancefloor. When the club isn’t hosting a live DJ, it’s the spot for concerts and music festivals.
Lucerna 6^ Vodičkova 36
One of the largest and most popular music clubs in Prague, Lucerna is known for its weekly concerts and events. But it’s maybe most popular on Friday and Saturday nights, when the club’s huge projection screens come alive with 80’s and 90’s music videos. Partygoers of every age and all walks of life can be seen here, getting down to oldie hits from Blondie to Nirvana.
Cross Club 6& Plynární 23, Prague 7 www.crossclub.cz
Cross Club is a labyrinth of small bars and dancefloors pumping music from dubstep and techno to reggae. The club’s psychedelic, industrial décor is a sight to see in itself—every piece of the building, from the walls to the ceiling, is constructed to move and pulsate with the music. It’s one of the most unique experiences you’ll have with nightlife in Praha, but you might want to grab an Uber. Cross Club is a bit out of the city’s center, but worth the trek.
Meet Factory 6* Ke Sklárně 3213/15 www.meetfactory.cz
This music club, art gallery, theater and cinema is the brainchild of David Černý, the artist responsible for some of Prague’s most famous (and controversial) modern art. A refurbished warehouse stuffed between a motorway and railroad tracks in Smíchov, Meet Factory transforms by night into a hip bar and music venue, where you’ll find local singers and international tours alike.
M1 Lounge 6( Masná 1, Prague 1 www.m1lounge.com
M1 Lounge is a favorite of locals, expats and even passing-through celebrities, and it’s not
hard to see why. The club’s well-known team of skilled DJs keep the place pumping with a mixture of R&B, hip-hop, electro and dance music until the wee hours of morning, and the upscale, luxurious atmosphere makes every night feel like a celebration. As an added plus, M1 is also conveniently located in the very center of the city.
hip hop, punk, psychobilly and more can be heard on a weekly basis. This is one of the oldest functioning clubs in Prague and if you’re into it take bus no. 176 up to the Strahov hill and enjoy the vibe...
James Dean 7)
One for the curious bored or brave. Retro has become the Czech home of hard house. Their club nights are full to the rafters until the small hours while go-go dancers whip the energetic clubbers into a house driven frenzy. A very friendly atmosphere with smiling faces and sweating brows as far as the eye can see, there are more locals and fewer tourists here than some of the other large clubs with amazing DJ’s, lasers, and vibes. Dress code is free and easy, flamboyant if you’re feeling daring.
V kolkovně 922/1 www.jamesdean.cz/
Okay, we admit that this one’s kind of kitschy— but only in the best way. Named for the iconic rebel and actor, the bar has a classic 1950’s American diner feel, complete with checkered floors, red vinyl upholstery and lots of chrome. Famous for its larger-than-life statue of James Dean, it also serves some of the best burgers, milkshakes, and French fries in town.

SaSaZu is a clubbers paradise with a feel of decadence as soon as you enter & not just an ordinary paradise but one with enough space for 2,000 partygoers. Located in the cool neighborhood of Holesovice, this hip club with it stylish, sleek interior attracts visitors and locals alike and impresses with top quality House, Dance, Funk, Ethno and Pop.
Radost FX 7#
Chapeau Rouge 7&
First opened in the early ‘90s just a few years after the Velvet Revolution, Radost FX is open Thursday to Saturday and offers the best of house, R&B and hip hop music—Rihanna even filmed one of her music videos there. Above the club is the venue’s restaurant and cafe, well-known as one of the best brunch spots in all of Prague.
Chapeau Rouge is a music clubs that ranks among the biggest in Prague with 3 floors, 4 bars & 3 stages. Chapeau truly has something for everyone! You may even stumble upon it all on your own: it’s in the center right behind Old Town Square and usually has some cool kids smoking a joint right outside its doors. The ground floor of Chapeau is a chill place to meet people from all over the world: travelers and expats alike. Go down one more floor and you’ll come across the dance club where international and local DJs blast out their beats playing pretty much 7 days a week with music in the main bar area being truly eclectic: everything from Balkan rhythms to drum & bass.
Klub 007 7$
Chaloupeckého 7 www.klub007strahov.cz
Supporting underground and non-mainstream music since 1969, 007 is a legendary club on the Prague music scene. It’s history is rooted in student dissent, providing a welcoming space to students disenchanted with the former regime. 007 offers a healthy assortment of unique bands, DJs, and other musical acts. Music diversity is an emphasis: electro, indie,

Harley's 7(
Dlouhá 18, 110 00 , Prague 1
Harleys is described as the coolest hell on earth. This American-style biker bar opens late and is always rockin’ and rollin’ with live DJs and music acts. It’s also in a perfect location, just a two-minute walk from Old Town Square. The entire placed is decked out in rock memorabilia ranging from Harley Davidson gear to Ramones and Jack Daniels posters.
La Loca r

Sasazu 7^
Neone got its start as a pop-up party, but it’s since grown into a well-established and respected club in Prague’s electronic music scene known for their superior sound system and live gigs. bar upstairs and an underground, cave-like labyrinth downstairs. When you walk in, don’t stop on the top level. All that is up here is a normal looking bar. Keep walking until you hit the stairs that descend into one of the coolest places to drink on Earth... It is indeed smoky, but get past that and the place is just mythic.
Chic, fashionable and a whole lotta fun! One of the very first smoke-free establishments in Prague entertains the crowds all day every day. The night is the time when true party colours of La Loca show. International vibes mixed with a scrumptious selection of sizzling drinks are a guarantee of a big night-out. Add a carefully selected music program - karaoke, 80s & 90s retro parties, DJ performances, live concerts and rooftop gatherings in the summer - and you can rest assured knowing you'll very likely to create memories to remember for a lifetime. Also, some of the most iconic pieces of art in Prague are situated at La Loca.
Café 80's 8)
You can't go wrong with 80's music. Whether you're nostaligic or just appreciative of all things "totally awesome", the two-story venue does features an 80's themed café restaurant on the first floor. But, the real story here is the basement. A nicely sized music club with an illuminated dance floor, plus a large bar and VIP lounge make it a night worthy of the MTV generation.

Prague Burlesque Royal Royal Vinohradská 48
It's the third season of famous Prague Burlesque Show, held in the beautiful Royal Music Hall. In a short period of time, this wild group of artists have managed to turn Prague into a burlesque capital. Paris has its Crazy Horse or Lido, as well as London, Berlin or New York. However, for a long time Prague lacked a good scene (except the National of course), which would attract a worldwide audience. Prague Burlesque has been successful already for two years. A new program called Dames Of Porcelain refers to a well-known film by director Juraj Herz. In collaboration with leading Czech designers, this show becomes a perfection composed of the most fragile components. Don’t be an elephant in a china shop, come and sit back, release your senses and go on a wild ride with no restrictions. But be careful! Ladies are (not) made of porcelain!
