The world’s best Staropramen is served in the same building where it’s made. It doesn’t get any better than the Staropramen that we serve. Twice a week, the brewmasters from the Staropramen brewery come by and assure that it’s of the upmost quality and standards. In fact, we even have an emergency hotline straight to the brewmaster. How did we get so lucky? It’s based on our history. Na Verandách has been around since nearly the inception of the brewery, and our longstanding friendship shows in everything we do. From our recent renovation which showcases brewery elements in our design, to our thoughtfully crafted menu which perfectly pairs the highest quality Czech cuisine with it’s beer counterpart, Na Verandách is proud of what we do. We invite you to come and see for yourself. Stop by for a pint and a great meal. We hope to see you soon.

here's to the pioneers... For all its ancient paths, historic traditions and centuries-old castles, Prague is a city that thrives on the new. It’s filled with pioneers—here, there are bright minds pushing boundaries on everything from theatre to cocktail creations and even environmentalism. And this month, we get as close as we can to the best of them. There’s Václav Vojíř, who opened Prague’s first real cocktail bar—a hip spot called Bugsy’s—just after the Velvet Revolution. Though it took some persuading to get Czechs to try the concept (and you’ll have to read our story to find out how Vojíř did it), Bugsy’s remains a Prague mainstay that has influenced most of today’s cocktail establishments.

PRAGUE

Next, no one can question Antonín Dvořák’s significance in Czech music history—but it’s his grandson, Dvorak III, who is keeping the legacy alive by preserving the composer’s countryside villa in Vysoká. We left our private tour with intimate knowledge of the world-renowned musician, and it’s Dvorák III’s own untold story that surprised us—and will hopefully you—the most. We couldn’t cover the innovators of Prague without a page or two on the city’s burgeoning food scene. But it turns out La Loca, the aroundthe-clock club and restaurant offering crossover cuisines, isn’t just delicious—it’s also part of Mosaic House, one of the Czech Republic’s most

environmentally-friendly buildings. While the building design conserves energy, the restaurant is full of it, and is even revamping its menu with a new chef this season. Last of all, we got an inside look at this month’s Prague Fringe, a festival at the forefront of bringing world class alternative theatre, music and comedy to Prague from across the globe. So here’s to the pioneers—we may not always share your vision from the start (sorry, Vojíř!), but we count on you to make this city great. See you next month!

being DvoRák

An afternoon with the grandson of the master

By Hannah Burns & Kylie Naughton There’s a private villa that lies atop a hill in Vysoká, a small village near the town of Příbram, some sixty kilometers south of Prague. It is desolate, but well kept, surrounded by greenery and countryside charm. It’s peaceful but powerful; something great happened here. A turn of the key, and we enter Antonín Dvořák’s Vysoká. This plot of land was the famed Czech composer’s prized possession. The musical mastermind spent a significant amount of time here, and it served as a sanctuary of inspiration for many of his works, including one of his most famous operas—Rusalka, for which he also named the villa. Now, it serves as a memorial to the master classical composer, holding every artifact from his life, the extraordinary story told through his grandson, Antonín Dvorak III. Dvorak III resides a stone’s throw away from the villa at Vysoká, in Příbram. He is a reincarnation of the Dvořák himself, with the same name and all—beyond looks, he has the modesty, charm and passion that one can imagine of the first Antonín Dvořák. However, Antonín Dvořák III’s story of triumph is a bit different—but we’ll get to that later. At the Rusalka villa, Dvořák III leads us into the mudroom, where flyers and pamphlets printed with Dvořák’s name line the walls. All of the composer’s

belongings and furniture remain here, from the piano on which he composed his Symphony Number 8 to his desk, still lined with his books and other means of inspiration, his bed and even the chair on which he took his last breath. Antonín Dvořák was a family man and father to nine children whose career as a musician was, at first, mostly practical. As he developed as a composer, so did widespread appreciation for his work, and in the 1890s, Dvořák traveled to New York City. The new world inspired his music, and in hand, his music inspired much of America. Here, he was founding director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York City, where he taught, wrote, composed, and ultimately spread his brilliance all over the country. Eventually, Dvořák longed for his home, and he found respite in Spillville after being invited to spend three months there with his secretary’s family. The small farm town in northern Iowa was a place where many Bohemian Czechs had settled earlier in the 19th century, and its small-town, countryside charm was reminiscent of his home in Bohemia. Dvořák and his family were well-recognized in Spillville, and it became a place that he held close to his heart. When his grandson was invited there in the ‘90s, after the Velvet Revolution, he was recognized

as an honorary citizen of Spillville. Dvořák III keeps the framed certificate in his home—something he holds close to his heart, and connects him with his late grandfather. The superiority of Antonín Dvořák is written in history, but the remaining legacy is found beyond the awards and international acclaim in the oftenuntold tale of his grandson. Coming of age under the communist regime, Dvořák III spent most of his adult life working in the mining industry, unaware of the legacy behind his own name. Communism shadowed the fame and acclaimed success of his predecessor, since it might have been threatening to the communist scheme of uniformity for the Dvořák family to live out the legacy of the famous composer. Dvořák III lived most of his life unaware of the respect his name had earned over the years. In fact, until the liberation in 1989, Antonín Dvořák III was just, simply, a miner of southern Bohemia. “I only knew that my name was Antonín Dvořák, but nothing more,” he says, but with a smile. Now, Dvořák III travels the world carrying out his grandfather’s legacy. Simply and tastefully, he is grateful for what he knows now, was honored to share his grandfather’s glory with us, and gladly spreads the love to anyone who passes through Příbram. AWARD WINNING BEER BREWED A FEW METERS FROM YOUR TABLE, PLUS DAMN GOOD FOOD.

bugsy's bar

the godfather of prague's cocktail culture

By Hannah Burns While the name Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel may conjure images of a 1940s-era gangster, he was also the mastermind and innovator behind the glory that is the Las Vegas strip—where others saw vast stretches of sand, he saw opportunity. So it’s no surprise that Václav Vojíř turned to Bugsy for inspiration when, just six years after the liberation, he decided to do what no Czech had done before: open a cocktail bar. When Bugsy’s Bar opened its doors in March 1995 with an extensive menu of more than 300 drinks, its concept was foreign to most Czechs. Where was the wine and beer? Vojíř, one of the co-founders of the bar and now an award-winning cocktail bartender, says he had to begin hosting cocktail tastings to persuade wary visitors to give the strange drinks a try. The first tasting featured the mojito, which resulted in something of a “mojito mania”—people tried it, they liked it, they really liked it, but they didn’t know what else they liked, so they stuck with mojitos for a while. This, along with the help of some expats who got the ball rolling with customers, jumpstarted the popularity and respect of Bugsy’s Bar. Though Bugsy’s has dropped its menu selection from the original, overwhelming 300 choices to 16-18 signature cocktails, it hasn’t lost its acclaim as the pioneer behind Prague’s now-lively cocktail bar industry. Many former Bugsy’s employees even

went on to start their own cocktail bars in the city, forming a local community around the cocktail craft. Bugsy may have been the original Las Vegas mafioso, but Vojíř is the Prague cocktail industry’s trusted Godfather. Over the many years since Bugsy’s grand opening, the bar has been remodeled only twice— once after losing their original interior in the flood of 2002, and then a second time in 2010. As a result, the bar has all the charm of a Bugsy-era establishment with a few modern twists. A backlit Dom Perignon banner lays on the back wall, atop a deep red cushioned wall. Shiny, smooth black leather seats and booths complement stone detailing that surrounds the bar. The menu, which is more of a cocktail guide, adds to the intimate atmosphere—it’s a small but sturdy, matte black book, containing the story behind of each cocktail with intricate and racy artwork throughout. Vojíř’s persona is an accurate representation of Bugsy’s as a whole: modern and put-together with a hint of old-time charm and a unique set of interests and history. But his interest in libations extends beyond just cocktails, and as a result, so does the selection at Bugsy’s. Vojíř is the owner and curator of the extensive wine collection that finds its home at the cocktail bar. The collection includes everything from more modern favorites to rare and exclusive finds, like Parisian bottles from the 18th and 19th centuries. Some are even treasures to the world, with only a

handful of remaining bottles. Patrons can purchase these precious wines, but only to drink in-house. There are absolutely no exceptions to this rule, as Vojíř is extremely fond and protective of his collection. He’s even turned away potential buyers, who wanted to purchase the wines and take them away for their own collections. The upside? Each buyer of the collection receives a book, outlining every bottle in Vojíř’s collection. The descriptions go as far as giving the weather forecast for the day each bottle was harvested, and how each of these factors affects the flavor of the wine. You can catch Bugsy’s at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival this summer—they are the main distributor for the festival, and their food and spirits reign supreme each year. But the true Bugsy’s experience can only be found at the establishment itself—the only cocktail bar on Prague’s luxury Pařížská street, which is lined with luxurious brands like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Prada. It’s a fitting locale, as Bugsy’s is the perfect combination of luxury and exclusivity —it finds its perfect home tucked into the corner of Pařížská. As for all of the rewards that that bar has received over the years, Vojíř remains modest and thankful for his success. “The awards are not so important, I’m most proud of the interest of the people,” he says. Find Bugsy's on our map on page 22, and in our cocktail guide on page 12. MAY 2017 | THE PRAGUE VISITOR

COCKTAIL GUIDE The best cocktail bars in Prague( (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).

Tretter's 8@

V kolkovne 3, Praha 1 +420 224 811 165 www.tretters.cz

The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years. So it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. The drinks are incredible – custom cocktails and meticulously made classics, some with a new twist. Tretter’s gets absolutely packed, sometimes out of nowhere. The trick is a reservation, so you’ll want to call ahead.

Parlour 8$

Krakovská 15, Praha 1 +420 777 200 015 www.parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. The good news is you don’t have to worry about finding a menu in English—there is no menu. Instead, your bartender will ask what you like and offer suggestions from there.

L'Fleur 9$

V Kolkovně 920/5, 1, Praha +420 734 255 665 www.lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Mucha-inspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which your bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list.

Anonymous Bar 9# Michalská 432/12, Praha 1 +420 608 280 069

www.anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile. The bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender your likes and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the secret drink menu printed in UV ink and read with a small blacklight. Reservations are taken only until 9pm.

Bar and Books 8%8^

Cash Only Bar 8(

Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the more casual in Manisova and slightly more formal in Týnská). The bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (though mostly for visual aesthetics). The cocktails here are serious business, and if you’re looking for a nice Cuban to go with your drink, this is the place to be.

Just around the corner from its older sibling Hemingway’s, this little gem is making its own name with cocktails like Pin-Up Martini, made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne. It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and, you guessed it— the bar doesn’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way, they do serve amazing hot dogs.

Manesova 64, Praha 2 and Týnská 19, Praha 1

Bonvivant's CTC 8&

Prolog is about attention to detail, and they’ve clearly put thought into every aspect of their work. Take the drink menu. An American Physician weighed patients just before and after death in 1907, concluding the weight of the soul to be 21 grams—a moment that inspired Prolog’s 21-drink menu, which serves a reminder to patrons to celebrate life. Seven of those 21 drinks are named after the Seven Deadly Sins.

Bartolomějská 305, Praha 1 +420 775 331 862

Bonvivant's CTC isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and has a cool 1950’s feel with mid-century wood furnishings, a pressed tin ceiling and a checkered floor. Bartenders are a virtual encyclopedia of drink possibilities and suggestions based on your tastes. Incidentally, the “CTC” in the bar’s title actually stands for cocktail tapas café, and it hits the mark on each one, serving some pretty damn tasty dishes and coffee as well.

Le Valmont 9)

Bugsy's 9%

Le Valmont is a newcomer, just opened in Spring 2016. The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Milos Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Just take note of the strict dress code at Le Valmont— no hats, hoodies, shorts, tank tops or sandals. Reservations are all but required, since the 100-capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly.

Bugsy’s is another bar with a great history, popping up just after the Velvet Revolution. Their one constant has been their attention to detail and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands in stock, as well as over 90 single malt whiskeys and 100 types of rum.

Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Old Town astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. With high cellar ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. The only downside to Black Angels is the influx of tourists which can pack the place, especially groups.

Chances are, if you’ve asked around, you’ve already been recommended to Hemingway’s Bar. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. So reservations are recommended.

CLUB GUIDE

Our Quick Guide to where all the cool kids go AFTER MIDNIGHT

Roxy 6%

Dlouhá 33, Prague 1

The Roxy is one of Prague’s oldest and bestknown clubs. The venue was a popular theatre and ballroom in the 1920’s, but now you’ll find drum and bass, house, techno, and other modern styles on the dancefloor. When the club isn’t hosting a live DJ, it’s the spot for concerts and music festivals.

Lucerna 6^ Vodičkova 36

One of the largest and most popular music clubs in Prague, Lucerna is known for its weekly concerts and events. But it’s maybe most popular on Friday and Saturday nights, when the club’s huge projection screens come alive with 80’s and 90’s music videos. Partygoers of every age and all walks of life can be seen here, getting down to oldie hits from Blondie to Nirvana.

Cross Club 6& Plynární 23, Prague 7 www.crossclub.cz

Cross Club is a labyrinth of small bars and dancefloors pumping music from dubstep and techno to reggae. The club’s psychedelic, industrial décor is a sight to see in itself—every piece of the building, from the walls to the ceiling, is constructed to move and pulsate with the music. It’s one of the most unique experiences you’ll have with nightlife in Praha, but you might want to grab an Uber. Cross Club is a bit out of the city’s center, but worth the trek.

Meet Factory 6* Ke Sklárně 3213/15 www.meetfactory.cz

This music club, art gallery, theater and cinema is the brainchild of David Černý, the artist responsible for some of Prague’s most famous (and controversial) modern art. A refurbished warehouse stuffed between a motorway and railroad tracks in Smíchov, Meet Factory transforms by night into a hip bar and music venue, where you’ll find local singers and international tours alike.

M1 Lounge 6( Masná 1, Prague 1 www.m1lounge.com

M1 Lounge is a favorite of locals, expats and even passing-through celebrities, and it’s not

hard to see why. The club’s well-known team of skilled DJs keep the place pumping with a mixture of R&B, hip-hop, electro and dance music until the wee hours of morning, and the upscale, luxurious atmosphere makes every night feel like a celebration. As an added plus, M1 is also conveniently located in the very center of the city.

hip hop, punk, psychobilly and more can be heard on a weekly basis. This is one of the oldest functioning clubs in Prague and if you’re into it take bus no. 176 up to the Strahov hill and enjoy the vibe...

James Dean 7)

One for the curious bored or brave. Retro has become the Czech home of hard house. Their club nights are full to the rafters until the small hours while go-go dancers whip the energetic clubbers into a house driven frenzy. A very friendly atmosphere with smiling faces and sweating brows as far as the eye can see, there are more locals and fewer tourists here than some of the other large clubs with amazing DJ’s, lasers, and vibes. Dress code is free and easy, flamboyant if you’re feeling daring.

V kolkovně 922/1 www.jamesdean.cz/

Okay, we admit that this one’s kind of kitschy— but only in the best way. Named for the iconic rebel and actor, the bar has a classic 1950’s American diner feel, complete with checkered floors, red vinyl upholstery and lots of chrome. Famous for its larger-than-life statue of James Dean, it also serves some of the best burgers, milkshakes, and French fries in town.

Chapeau Rouge 7&

First opened in the early ‘90s just a few years after the Velvet Revolution, Radost FX is open Thursday to Saturday and offers the best of house, R&B and hip hop music—Rihanna even filmed one of her music videos there. Above the club is the venue’s restaurant and cafe, well-known as one of the best brunch spots in all of Prague.

Chapeau Rouge is a music clubs that ranks among the biggest in Prague with 3 floors, 4 bars & 3 stages. Chapeau truly has something for everyone! You may even stumble upon it all on your own: it’s in the center right behind Old Town Square and usually has some cool kids smoking a joint right outside its doors. The ground floor of Chapeau is a chill place to meet people from all over the world: travelers and expats alike. Go down one more floor and you’ll come across the dance club where international and local DJs blast out their beats playing pretty much 7 days a week with music in the main bar area being truly eclectic: everything from Balkan rhythms to drum & bass.

Chic, fashionable and a whole lotta fun! One of the very first smoke-free establishments in Prague entertains the crowds all day every day. The night is the time when true party colours of La Loca show. International vibes mixed with a scrumptious selection of sizzling drinks are a guarantee of a big night-out. Add a carefully selected music program - karaoke, 80s & 90s retro parties, DJ performances, live concerts and rooftop gatherings in the summer - and you can rest assured knowing you'll very likely to create memories to remember for a lifetime. Also, some of the most iconic pieces of art in Prague are situated at La Loca.

You can't go wrong with 80's music. Whether you're nostaligic or just appreciative of all things "totally awesome", the two-story venue does features an 80's themed café restaurant on the first floor. One show from each Fringe venue ← Loud Poets Spoken word

How do a pair of Aussies become hard-core Prague Fringe fans? For third-time Prague Fringe visitors Don and Susan Culvenor, it started out as just a matter of luck. “We love Prague and the Festival after accidently discovering it after talking to a performer handing out fliers on Charles Bridge, then attending a performance. Which quickly turned into 8 or 9 in our three remaining days stay,” Don and Susan explained. “It was the highlight of our 10-week European trip.” It’s the ambience of the festival that keeps bringing them back to Prague. “We really love the social aspect around the Fringe - meeting and chatting with performers after the shows, the many fellow audience members you meet regularly at venues, the small scale that allows intimate access to 'behind the scene' moments, the ease and pleasure of walking between venues and performances through a fantastic city, the satisfaction of feeling you belong to a part of the culture that lots of other tourists don't experience, the joy of finding a new great performance or show, the fun in re-meeting old acquaintances be they performers or audience members, the sense of belonging somewhere , if only for a week or so, that is different to the rest of our holiday experience,” the couple said, adding, “It’s always great to say to ourselves, ‘we are back again, we can relax and enjoy’.” In between shows the pair might fit in some museums, try out new lunch spots, or get in some shopping, but their main focus is on the festival itself and the broad range of experience it offers, “from the fabulous to the thought provoking,” they said. “When the Fringe is in full flight, we are very much engaged in trying to see as many shows as possible.”

DIVADLO INSPIRACE I 26.05.–30.05. I 18:15–19:15 I 31.05.–03.06. I 18:45–19:45

In this award-winning one-man play, Rudolf Hess, Hitler’s deputy, supposes what he might say to an audience about himself, the Third Reich and the world we have created since the Nazi regime. How much has really changed? DIVADLO KAMPA I 26.05.– 28.05. I 19:15 – 20:30 I 29.05.– 31.05. I 20:00 – 21:15 I 01.06.– 03.06. I 19:30 – 20:45

Jim Haynes is a self-professed “festival junkie.” It’s a habit that has taken him around the world: Berlin, San Sebastián, Moscow, Calcutta, Avignon, St. Petersburg, and (of course) Prague. He’s a relative newcomer to the Prague Fringe – compared, that is, with his 60-going-on-61 Edinburgh festivals. But Haynes is far more than a festival fan. He’s more akin to a cultural icon and force of nature. Before moving to Paris 47 years ago, he was involved in co-founding some of the UK’s leading cultural lights, including the Edinburgh Book Festival (which overlaps with the Edinburgh Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival) and the acclaimed Traverse Theatre. Over the years, he reckons he has produced around 350 shows across Europe, including an experimental piece for the Prague Fringe last year. Back home in Paris, you’ll find him hosting an international dinner party every Sunday evening. “Last Sunday 88 people from all over the world attended,” he tells us. So what brings him to Prague? “I am a big fan of Steve Gove’s and love what he has done with the Prague Fringe and I am really excited to be back again this year with another show."

Exposing a society that spies on its citizens and the thin line between acquiescence and culpability, between comedy and creepy terror, Alliance marks its 3rd Prague Fringe appearance by celebrating Havel’s 80th birthday year ‘apartment performance’ style. Fringe Folk Meet some of the creators bringing shows to this year’s festival.

Zach & Viggo

Men with Coconuts

Zach Zucker: "the sometimes funny Jew" and Viggo Venn: "the tall bearded Norwegian", have been performing together as cousins for many years now. They have been featured artists at Fringe festivals in Edinburgh, Adelaide, Brighton, Perth and Berlin, as well as comedy festivals in Melbourne, Toronto, London, Oslo and Copenhagen. This year their favorite performance opportunity so far was in The Grampians National Park in Australia in a small town called Halls Gap because, " ... [they] sold out the gig weeks before getting there and were able to see some beautiful waterfalls, deadly snakes and lovely kangaroos." Zach & Viggo get to travel the world and "meet the craziest people from all walks of life," and they are thankful that the Prague Fringe Festival, "is big enough to attract artists from all over the world and small enough for [them] to all get to know each other."

Will, Charlie and Steve perform together for the fourth time at Prague Fringe this spring. This gang of talented men performed their first Fringe in Edinburgh in 2013 and continue to bring improvised humour to both Edinburgh and Prague annually. While they usually face tougher crowds around Scotland, they are excited to be in the presence of seasoned comedy-goers in Prague because “they’re that perfect mixture of excited and attentive”. The Men with Coconuts are proud to recognise familiar faces in the audience as their fans follow them back to Prague each year especially since, “they’re so buzzing and welcoming”. Many Fringe fans will rave about their improvised comedy sketches and games because the audience provides suggestions that truly culminate into their show-stopping finale which helped them to win the Spirit of the Fringe award at Prague Fringe in 2016.

Catch ZACH & VIGGO: DREAM TEAM nightly at Divadlo Inspirace, times vary. Look out for their solo shows LIFE OF PEPITO and HUMAN PERSON between 29th May 3rd June. See www.fringe.cz for full details and tickets. 20

Henry’s Top Tip:

Go and see HESS (Divadlo Kampa, 26.05 - 03.06, times vary) We shared a dressing room with its star, Derek Crawford Munn at the Gilded Balloon at the Edinburgh Fringe this year. I never got to see the show but I heard it was great, and heard the audience applause at the end of the show, which was always enthusiastic. So I am looking forward to that!

Henry Naylor Writer and director of ANGEL, Divadlo Kampa, 1st - 3rd June at 6pm

An award-winning British comedy writer and director, known internationally for his work as head writer on the TV comedy show Spitting Image. His play Echoes won the Creative Award and the Best Performance Award at the 2016 Prague Fringe Festival. What are you bringing to the Prague Fringe Festival this year? I am bringing Angel to Prague this year. It’s a one-woman show we premiered at Edinburgh last year, and took to Adelaide this February. We’re very proud of it; it transferred off-Broadway to New York for a monthlong run this April, and has won a hatful of awards! It’s a true story about a female sniper who, in defending her home town of Kobane, shot 100 members of ISIS, and has become particularly relevant right now. At a time when many politicians are treating the Muslim community with suspicion, it’s a reminder that the principal fighters of the jihadists are Muslims.

How did you make the transition from comedy to becoming a dramatist? The first straight play I wrote was The Collector in 2014. I set out to write a comedy set in Abu Ghraib (yes, yes, I know, I know. I like a challenge). But when I started doing the research, I realized there were some very serious points I wanted to get across, which would be difficult to convey – and could be trivialized - in a comedy. So I changed the tone… and suddenly found I was a dramatist! If I’m honest, I think I’m a better playwright than I was a comedian – and I feel like I’ve now found my true métier, almost by accident. How does the Prague Fringe compare to or differ from the other festivals where you've taken your plays? I love it. I think it’s one of the most ambitious and charming festivals there is. To have an English language arts Festival in a non-English speaking country is remarkable. To have one this successful – and this large – is quite extraordinary. It definitely has a friendly vibe. One of the nice things is, you can’t do flyering and fly-posting – the city authorities won’t allow it. It means that a lot of the aggressive marketing you see in Edinburgh isn’t part of the festival. And I think that contributes to the more relaxed vibe that this Festival has. Well, that and the fact that Prague has to be one of the most stunning cities in Europe. The city is drenched in art and beauty. One of the joys of the Fringe is walking to work every day! Particularly as the venues are always in stunning spots. I’m convinced it helps the quality of the shows. All the performers get a kick out of coming here, and their enthusiasm spills into their work! Also Steve [Gove, the director of the festival] and his team work hard to make the Festival approachable and inclusive, so all the performers and crew feel they're part of one big team. Tram and Metro Map

Public Transport Tips:

First let people off, before you get on. If someone elderly gets on, give up your seat. It’s not just curtious, it’s expected here. To fit in on the metro and trams wear your headphones. If you don’t have headphones, then play with your phone instead, or read a book or this magazine. If you’ve been drinking, don’t act like an idiot, even with friends.

Late Night: After midnight, trams switch to “Night Service”, which includes a whole new schedule that can be a bit confusing - especially if you’ve had a few drinks. Our recommendation - call an Uber or Liftago or use a taxi to get to your destination.

Prague Fringe Profile

Petra Janoušková

Win a free night at Golden Key Hotel Share and tag a photo of your Fringe cupcake at Designum Cafe to enter the competition - winner announced on the final day of Fringe. Full details on Instagram: @praguefringe

The Golden Key Hotel is one of the venues that becomes filled with the Fringe feel come May. Hotel Manager, Petra Janoušková expresses her admiration for the festival claiming that, “... the atmosphere is lovely and our guests get a real added bonus to their stay!” Petra willingly admits that she sought out the Fringe team when the hotel first opened in 2014, as she witnessed the growing festival come to life in Prague. “Most of our guests are intrigued by the Fringe as soon as they arrive” she says. A hidden gem in the hotel is the cellar which transforms into a performance venue during the festival, equipped with its own bar serving drinks in between performances. This year’s special is the aptly named ‘Fringe ‘n’ Tonic’. Why not indulge in a delicious Fringe cupcake in the Designum cafe, adjacent to the hotel.

Petra's top tip:

I love interesting stories about women so I’m looking forward to ODETTE! which performs here in our cellar venue Golden Key from 26th 31st May. Times vary so check www.fringe.cz for details and to secure your seat in our cozy space.

Plan your Fringe

Friendly advice for first time Fringe-goers!

Tickets

↘ Plan ahead

↘ Hold your ground

↘ Join the fun

Buy tickets in advance: they’re cheaper, and they guarantee you a seat. Some venues only have 20 seats and do sell out!

If you’re lost in the programme and don’t know where to begin, pick a venue and stay there for the evening, be adventurous and take a chance on shows – you might be surprised what you see!

Head to the Fringe Club at Malostranská beseda after the shows to mingle with the performers, staff and fellow fringe-goers and catch tips for the next day.

General admission: 150Kč advance (170Kč on the door) Children and students: 100Kč advance (120Kč on the door) Discount voucher: 650Kč (5 tickets at 130Kč) ↘ www.fringe.cz

↘ Tips from the pros:

Wear comfortable shoes! You'll be doing a lot of walking between venues and it is mostly cobbles! Riyaz, UK, Fringe volunteer

After sharing a dance/pivo/Becherovka at Fringe club and a sunrise on Charles Bridge you'll have friends for life, whether you're on the Fringe team, a member of the audience or a performer! Becca, UK, Fringe volunteer

Don’t see 1 show a night – that’s just not Fringe! See 2 or 3 shows per night, discover your own favourites, share your finds with other festival goers! Now that’s Fringe! Carole, UK, Fringe Associate Director

All the fun of the Fringe

Fringe with the family If you’re visiting Prague with children then Fringe makes an ideal addition to your itinerary. With shows scheduled during the afternoon early evening, and most lasting just 1 hour or less, it’s a fun way to keep the kids (and parents!) entertained and to rest weary limbs at the end of a day’s sightseeing. Why not start out by attending Family Fringe to get a free preview of all of the kids shows on offer, and enjoy a delicious afternoon snack courtesy of the very talented chef at La Loca Bar & Lounge. Other notable mentions include Bubble Show with Milkshake, an hour of bubble tricks and tomfoolery, Mr. Gundersen’s Kerfuffle – a non-verbal puppetry piece about mysterious creatures called ‘The Trunks’, and What If… a magical mystery tour inside a purpose-built dome ‘spaceship’! For older children and teenagers there’s also a modern re-telling of a Shakespeare classic: Twelfth Night Reimagined by the Bravehearts (Australian Shakespeare Company’s youth division).

Prague Fringe Profile

Gilles Ouveley

One of Prague’s most unique and versatile finds, Mosaic House, is greeting the Prague Fringe Festival with an exciting new style this year.

Mosaic House is connected with many festivals during the year but Marketing Manager, Gilles Oulevey, provides just a few of the reasons why they are most excited to continue hosting part of the Fringe. In past years the Fringe festival has been known to attract guests visiting and staying in Mosaic House and, “people were shocked positively and happy to attend”. Not only does the festival benefit the guests, but the staff too! Many staff members admit that they too find themselves following the Fringe around Prague after experiencing the happiness and laughter it brings to them at work. “There is definitely something for every taste!” Speaking of tastes, the newly renovated open kitchen at their restaurant serves a crossover cuisine providing the opportunity for families to enjoy tastes from Mediterranean to Middle-Eastern cuisine. Oulevey ensures that their motto “together is better” fits perfectly for hosting ‘Frunch' during the festival. Frunch (Fringe brunch) is an opportunity for Fringe fans and guests of Mosaic House to indulge in a mix of breakfast and lunch specials every day during the festival.

Gilles' top tip: Don’t miss FRINGE SUNDAY, the free event here at Mosaic House on Sunday 28th May at 2:30pm. It’s a great way to recover from the first two nights of the festival and re-focus and plan the rest of the week. No reservation required, just turn up!

With its members coming from different corners of the Czech Republic and disparate musical backgrounds, Please The Trees is a band of many contrasts. Their sound summons the spirits of everything from Popol Vuh styley expressionism thru wall-of-sound atmospherics of likes as Mogwai to, say, experimental folk epics that reverberated in the turn of the 60s to the 70s by artists like Ron Elliot, Neil Young or Jack Nitzsche. Dejvice Theater Ucpanej system was based on the works of the famous Scottish author Irvina Welshe Acid House. In the annotation to the Czech edition of the book in 2008, he wrote: “This is a Welsh second book, full of pictures of social life scum, in which the author does not remain live up to its reputation; his lyrics again exploring the dark corners of the world and the soul. The narrator is representative Edinburgh street whose speech is scary, full of vulgarities, siláckých sayings, slang turnovers, truncation and patvarů, but definitely not dull and boring. This is because it is contained therein humor, although a lot of black, cynical and brutal, but how else truthfully describe real life, who also play nice with anyone? and then the rule that no story ends happy ending and it has never been so bad that it can not be worse. “ Humor, Comedy

Although Nabucco is only Verdi’s third opera, he has managed to create a highly suggestive work on the biblical topic. He was first captivated by the beginning of psalm 136 in the libretto: “Va, pensiero, sull’ali dorate” (Fly, thought, upon gilded wings...), which inspired him to a spontaneous composition of a choir, whose fiery melody and rhythm made it into a song of liberation sung all over Italy. He finished the whole opera within a few weeks after that. The passionate music of the piece about the liberation of Jews from Egyptian captivity fully corresponded to the mood of the populace, yearning for liberation from Austro-Hungarian power and the unification of Italy. La Loca music bar RECHARGES WITH A NEW CHEF and menu

BY KYLIE NAUGHTON La Loca Music Bar and Lounge, located in the exquisite Mosaic House, is a place of around-theclock transformation–whether it be the daily grind with a fresh cappuccino, a business lunch with colleagues, dinner and drinks with old friends or a late night of celebrating. At La Loca, renowned Czech chef Radim Gerlich works off the idea that “together tastes better.” After spending time as a chef in cities like Italy and London, Gerlich acquired skills in all areas of food preparation. At La Loca, he introduced what he likes to call “crossover cuisine.” With a small menu style made for sharing, each dish is composed of strategically selected ingredients and prepa-ration techniques with influences from classic Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines. Think risotto sprinkled with saffron, pistachios and barberries; or roasted salmon seasoned with beetroot and pomegranate. La Loca also offers an open kitchen for customers to get a behind-the-scenes glance at what will soon end up on their table. The kitchen opened last month, and the restaurant will hold a press con-

ference in the coming weeks to display the kitchen and new menu. Along with expertly crafted dishes, the venue features modern artwork throughout the intricately designed space, with works by a variety of Czech artists. Upon entrance to the Mosaic House, three large mushroom structures are planted in the grass, giving guests a hint of what is to come behind the doors. In honor of the recent Easter holiday, a giant egg was even placed in the center of the restaurant, inviting guests to make their mark by writing a note or leaving a drawing on its surface. “We created a place where you feel home and where you can experience something new,” said marketing director Gilles Oulevey. “When we come up with an idea, we think of ways to make it even more out of the box.” In addition to embodying the triple threat of a café, restaurant and event venue, La Loca also turns into a lively club scene when the evening crowd rolls in. Themed nights such as an on-stage open mic, 80s/90s night and even karaoke are featured on designated evenings. Soon, the venue will

host stand-up comedy, featuring some of the best comedians in Prague. With spring just around the corner, guests can also look forward to patio seating in La Loca’s garden, overlooking a spectacular view of the city. But La Loca’s ability to transform their scene as the day progresses goes far beyond its atmosphere and artistic ambiance. In 2010, Mosaic House, the home of La Loca, introduced the Czech Republic’s first water recycling system. Since, the building has saved over 10 million liters of water — roughly 4,000 liters per day. All in all, the building saves 20 percent of all energy sources with the use of green energy, an innovative concept that is not widely seen in Prague. Mosaic House offers something for everyone at a pace that’s constantly in transition. It’s a place of unification — energy conservation with a highenergy atmosphere, old friends or new friends, one country’s cuisine in combination with another. La Loca has no boundaries. Or, as their mantra goes, “one house, 1,000 memories.” MAY 2017 | THE PRAGUE VISITOR

PRAGUE STREET POTRAITS INSPIRED BY THE HUMANS OF NEW YORK BLOG | BY TOMÁŠ PRINC FIND MORE HUMANS OF PRAGUE ONLINE AT HTTP://HUMANSOFPRAGUE.IHNED.CZ

"Ten years ago, I got married in Bucharest, Romania. That’s where my wife grew up. On our way back, we had an eight-hour layover in Warsaw. We had almost no money left, and eight hours with nothing to do. So, we took a taxi to the city. I told the driver to take us somewhere interesting. He took us to where he thought we wanted to go, but it was a terrible place. There was a McDonald’s and everything else you can see in the cities of United States - big modern buildings, fast food chains. So, we started to walk through the streets. My wife was really nervous that we might miss our flight, but we walked and walked and walked - exhausted after the wedding. Finally, when there was about three hours left, I noticed that the place was getting more and more beautiful. The buildings were becoming older and more unique, and the architecture was glorious. It was something I’d never seen before – I had never traveled much outside of the United States. So, three hours left, everything’s beautiful, but my wife of two days was ready to kill me. "We’re gonna miss our flight! We’re leaving right now!" she told me. "But look how beautiful it is, I'm not moving another foot!” I said. "Fine. But look - there's an intersection literally two hundred feet from us, it looks like there might be something there.” But she 42

wasn't moving. "OK, I’ll tell you what, love. You give me ninety seconds – in thirty seconds I’m gonna run fast as I can to that intersection, I’ll look around for thirty seconds, and run back in thirty seconds - give me ninety seconds." We shook hands on it, and I started running. I made it to the intersection, I looked around and it was the most beautiful place I’d seen in my life. And I mean it. For me, it was like there were angels singing above, like there was a rainbow and sparkling fireworks. Simply amazing. In reality, it was a giant open square. We don’t have those in America, so I was really in shock. I saw people hanging out, having coffee, reading books, talking to each other, smiling, laughing – having the best time of their lives. So I ran back to my wife and caught my breath, I said "Honey, you’re not going to believe what I just saw!” I tried to tell her and she replied "You mean you saw a square? Every city in Europe has a square, it’s not a big deal." Well, it was a big deal for me. So, she said "Okay, fine, in the next ten years, I promise you, you’ll get a trip and you can go to Warsaw.” "So now, ten years later, we have two wonderful daughters, a one-year-old and a five-year-old, I run a successful business in Silicon Valley, I work hard and my wife recently told me: "Take a week off and

go anywhere you want. Go, clear you mind and come back relaxed. Where do you want to go?" I said, "Warsaw! I promised myself!" I went, I stayed at a hotel on that very square, had the coffee and the whole European experience. Now, I've come to Prague and I’ve never been so impressed. Being here feels like magic, like a fantasy – something that’s not in my reality. Besides the architecture, there are two things that I’ve noticed. I see all these big groups of tourists, I guess mainly from Italy or Spain, going through the streets singing. They are not even drunk, but they do it in a really joyful way. For me, that’s incredible to see. The second thing is the Astronomical Clock. When I open the window in my hotel, I’m looking right at it – I wanted to be at the square again, obviously. And every hour, when the bell rings and the little statues go around in the clock, everyone is excited. Where I live, nobody gets excited about anything anymore, but people get really impressed by this clock, and there’s this feeling of doing something together. Hundreds, maybe even thousands of people stand together, wait for twenty minutes and then look at it in awe, they smile, they clap. And all because of the few statues that pass by. This really is my week in Narnia.”
