Kateřina Pavlitová of Prague City Tourism Prague welcomes millions of tourists every year, and a big part of Kateřina Pavlitová’s job is to help them make the most of their visit. Here are a few of her tips to enjoy your summertime trip to the Czech capital.

Visit the Agricultural Museum. This newly remodeled building in Letná incudes multilingual, interactive exhibits (tractors! live animals!) that are great for families, plus a rooftop garden for a picnic with incredible views.

Use public transport, and don’t forget to STAMP YOUR TICKET to validate it when entering the metro, tram, or bus. Inspectors don’t take kindly to excuses or make any exceptions to this rule. On a lighter note, a Prague transport ticket also includes some fun rides, like the Petřín fernicular and ferries across the Vltava river.

Go to a farmer’s market. These aren’t limited to locals buying fresh fruit and vegetables – think more food-lovers markets with stands of readyto-eat snacks and meals. Try Náplavka on the Vltava riverbank or Heřmaňák in the Holešovice neighborhood on Saturday mornings.

Get out of the city center. This summer is a great time to discover the Karlín neighborhood. Grab a bite from the open-air food stalls at the new, no-cash-cards-only Manifesto Market, then walk a few streets over to experience Kasarna Karlín’s multi-functional arts space and outdoor cinema.

Wake up early and take a morning walk in one of Prague’s many peaceful parks. Kateřina suggests the southern section of Petřín park around the Kinsky gardens, near the Smíchov neighborhood, for a quiet stroll away from the crowds.

The Agriculture Museum garden isn’t the only high point in town. Kateřina recommends the many impressive views from above the city. Find your favorite panoramic perspective of Prague’s iconic red rooftops church and spires from the top of the Old Town Hall, the Charles Bridge Towers, or the Powder Tower.

Try some seasonal summer treats. Keep an eye on the menus at Czech restaurants for fruit dumplings (ovocné knedlíky) made with strawberries, apricots, and plums. Ice cream and gelato shops are popular across the city, or stop into a corner store and try a Miša popsicle filled with tvaroh, a soft white sort of cream cheese popular in Czech cuisine.

Janek Rubeš and Honza Mikulka of the Honest Guide Honza and Janek’s popular YouTube channel, Honest Guide, is devoted to saving tourists from scams and tourist traps in Prague. They offer local advice on what to avoid in order to honestly enjoy their hometown.

Don’t exchange money at the airport or on the streets. This is a surefire way to get terrible rates, and scammers on the streets might even slip you some expired rubles instead of Czech crowns. Check out the Honest Guide video for recommended exchange places or just pay by card at most places around town.

These guys agree that public transport is the way to travel. Don’t hail a cab on the streets of Old Town unless you want to pay multiple times a normal rate. Prague’s affordable, reliable public transport system (or a nice walk) will take you anywhere you need to go.

While we’re on the subject, they’ve got another transport tip: Don’t try to board public transport before others have finished exiting. Wait for passengers to get off, then hop on with a clear path to keep things moving smoothly.

When you’re looking for souvenirs, stick to images that show the beauty of Prague, and please don’t buy Soviet-era memorabilia. Instead of these symbols of occupation, try gifts with a picture of St Wenceslas, the patron saint of the Czech Republic, or an image of the gorgeous city skyline.

6 These guys have one thing to say to the stag parties and pub crawls in Prague – don’t take your party into the streets. Find a club that’s made for your entertainment, but keep it quiet when you leave. Remember that people live in the center of Prague and you wouldn’t wanting someone shouting in front of your house at 3am.

Don’t be afraid to explore or approach the locals. Honza recommends ducking into Prague’s many passages and doorways to find hidden beauty across the city. He also encourages tourists to ask for help, and is always happy to offer tips anytime he sees someone struggling to decipher a map.

First let people off, before you get on. If someone elderly gets on, give up your seat. It’s not just curtious, it’s expected here. To fit in on the metro and trams wear your headphones. If you don’t have headphones, then play with your phone instead, or read a book or this magazine. If you’ve been drinking, don’t act like an idiot, even with friends.

Late Night: After midnight, trams switch to “Night Service”, which includes a whole new schedule that can be a bit confusing - especially if you’ve had a few drinks. Our recommendation - call an Uber or Liftago or use a taxi to get to your destination.

Mapping a good cause By Lauren Kania Diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome and Apathetic-Abdominal Syndrome at a young age, fourteen year-old Matthew Hoskova and his family knew that he may have some unique challenges in his lifetime. However, he had a distinct passion that allowed him to surpass any limitation or restriction given to him by the doctors. This passion was the creation and design of maps, specifically, maps of Prague and other surrounding cities in the Czech Republic. Thus, with the help of his family, Matthew was able to create Maappi; maps and designs that convey his own perspective of the world. After Matthew was born in 2004, his mother, Michaela, readily sacrificed her career in order to make life more comfortable for her son. She helped with maintaining his daily rituals and ensured that he developed in a way that contributed to his future desires and ultimate success, as opposed to suppressing them by forcing him to adhere to what others expected of him. Despite visiting doctors who insisted that Matthew would be better off in a school that was designed for children who had

similar social problems, Michaela knew that he would thrive just as vibrantly in a traditional school setting with the help of an assistant to accompany him on the day-to-day with any issues that might arise. Her intuitions proved to be correct, and now Matthew is taking his map designs and creating a successful business for those who want a beautiful and innovative way to represent the city. Maappi has become a way for Matthew to convey his passion for design in a setting that allows him to fully express himself without the restraints some initially feared he would face. Michaela quickly recognized her son’s talent and excitement when it came to creating maps and other designs. She was then able to use her knowledge of fashion to help him produce his work in a variety of ways. Matthew’s designs are now not only on paper, but on clothing, shoes, backpacks, phone cases, mugs, journals, etc. and are available to purchase both online at maappi.com and instore at Kotva Department Store. Up in Smoke Shisha goes by many names the world over, but no matter what you call it, the practice is the same. Kick back, relax and enjoy some vaporized smoke from a hookah water pipe. For centuries, shisha has been associated with luxury and indulgence. In many countries, shisha was historically linked to wealth, but as time has gone by and shisha lounges have popped up across the world, smoking unique tobacco blends has become accessible to a greater variety of demographics and cultures. Smoking shisha is a pastime with a long history, so long in fact, that its origins are a little shrouded in smoke and mystery. Shisha pipes, or hookah, are thought to have originated in India during the Mughal Empire after tobacco was introduced to the country by the Jesuits. From there the water pipes spread to the Near East and were modified to more closely resemble those we are familiar with today. However, some debate that hookah can be traced to Persia during the Safavid dynasty, and that it made its way to India from there. Either way, we know that shisha passed through India and the Near East before making its way here to Europe to be enjoyed by a new audience. After centuries of tweaking and perfecting, shisha has become popular the world over, and Prague is no exception. It's no surprise that a country with such a love affair with smoking has adopted shisha on a grand scale. There are plenty of places to kick back and sample an array of flavored smokes here in the Czech capital. We've rounded up a few of our favorite shisha lounges with a variety of concepts that bring something new and modern to this oldest of traditions.

„I’m thinking that I should have my pocket repaired – I was learning how to use brakes. I bought myself a skateboard, despite my age. I fulfilled my dream with a thirty year delay. I grew up in the region of Bruntál and in mid-1980s, when I was around ten, a boy from Prague once came and had a skateboard. He let me ride it and I loved it. I assigned a task to my whole family to get me a skateboard but it was simply not possible to get it in our region. I was sad about it but on the other hand, it was just one of five desired items that I wanted at some moment of my boyhood. My parents did manage to get me a bicycle with a derailleur. I didn’t get a sword but my wife promised to buy me one for my fiftieth birth50

day. And I remembered the dream of having a skateboard around the time I was turning forty. I teach cybernetics and robotics at Czech Technical University, I was working in California for some time and I used to ride a bike to the university. But somebody stole it from me after only two weeks. I noticed that students rode longboards and I thought that I might use it as a way of transport. And so I did fulfill the old dream of mine. Actually, I didn’t see it as something bygone – maybe I’m just slow but everything seems to go so fast. It seems to me that it was just now when I wanted the skateboard. At a moment I wanted it, a few things happened after that – high school, university, a short time at work, one, two –

and I still want it. I have met a classmate from my elementary school recently and I boasted that I started playing with it, that I ride it downhill for instance, and he said: ‚Dude, what you wanna prove to yourself?‘ I told him: ‚It’s not like that at all! I don’t need to delude myself into thinking that I’m young. Because I am still young!’“
