The Green City Guide is like a bible for eco-minded travelers, and the Prague Superguide Edition No. 3 is like a no-nonsense survival guide to living like a local while you're here. Trust us, these books will make your trip even more special - and like the beer here -they're not expensive. If you stop by and see us, stop in and see our neighbor just behind us at the Museum of Alchemists and Magicians, which is rumored to be the ancient laboratory of famous alchemist, Edward Kelley. We've taken a tour of the place ourselves and learned about the ancient legends of dark magic in Prague, including some
surprising names tied to legend, such as William Shakespeare. Read more about it in this issue. Because we're terrible at keeping secrets, we've also included a guide to eleven of Prague’s most unique bars. Get a beer served by a model train, a cocktail from the undead, or choose your fate with a tarot card from a masked plague dWoctor. It's all in this month's issue! We’d like to thank all our readers and partners for the continued support. NonStop Opportunity
Local firm creates over 100 extra job opportunities in preparation for going global While the name NonStop may evoke images of a 3am run to the local potraviny, for one of Europe’s leading talent consultancies, NonStop Recruitment, it highlights a particular thread that runs throughout the business – through it’s people, it’s philosophy, and it’s basis for success. It’s about resilience, not giving up; about motivation and determination and the will to succeed against all odds. It’s about the business supporting its people through award-winning training and development to become elite recruiters, and about those people driving the business forward. NonStop Recruitment is a company defiantly unlike any other you’ll come across. This is an organisation shaking up the recruitment industry with a determination to provide the best careers for its people, regardless of skills, education, nationality or any other background, while also providing the best service for its clients. And they’re doing it from right here in Prague. What are they doing specifically? Well, it’s recruitment – it’s supporting clients in their search for the best talent to drive their businesses forward. But look one layer deeper and it’s clear NonStop is doing this in a way that no other recruitment consultancy is – by training and developing their recruiters from scratch. 99% of their people, including business leaders, joined NonStop with no prior experience. NonStop hires Europe’s brightest, most motivated raw talent and provides intensive training to help those people become industry-leading, expert recruitment consultants who effectively run their own business unit. And the training doesn’t stop at recruitment skills either. Once their people have begun to find success, NonStop helps them develop into effective managers and business leaders while also letting them choose which NonStop office they want to work from. There’s some tempting options: sky high in London’s Canary Wharf, in historic Portsmouth on England’s South Coast, lakeside in picturesque Zug, Switzerland, and of course Prague’s ‘architectural jewel’ Danube House. It’s NonStop professional and personal development and NonStop career progression with the life experience that comes with working with people from more than 25 different nationalities who have moved from around Europe to Prague. And it all means that people progress as quickly as their ambition, motivation, determination and, well… their NonStop belief will allow them. As Ben Jones, a 29-year old journalism graduate from the UK and now a NonStop Director, explains: “It’s that NonStop belief – the belief that anything is possible and anything is achievable at NonStop – that ensures success for NonStoppers and the company alike.” Ben joined NonStop four years ago and like most of
NonStop Recruitment founder Kevin Smith (right) and Managing Director Oliver Donoghue (left), put a huge focus on training and development of employees, with 99% of their consultants having joined with no prior recruitment experience.
the company, wasn’t really sure what he wanted from his career. He now owns a flat in Prague, manages an office of more than 150 people and drives a 2017 California T Ferrari. “NonStop is literally changing people’s lives – not just our clients and candidates but changing the lives of our employees. We’ve got people in their mid 20s who are earning six figure salaries (in Euros, not Czech Koruna!), who have paid off student loans, who have bought property, who travel to exotic locations and stay in five-star accommodation… we’ve got people like myself who will be able to retire very early and very comfortably,” he says. But it’s certainly not as easy as it sounds, he adds. “Yes there are fantastically high rewards for people at NonStop – you get out of this what you put in – but you also need to be humble enough to take on feedback and apply the training while still maintaining a will to succeed, a perseverance to basically keep going when the going gets tough, even in the face of rejection because that happens a lot in recruitment. We are helping our clients find the best employees and sometimes the matches don’t work out. “This is the NonStop belief we talk about – a persevering belief that you can do it and a will to make it work… and of course, there’s a load of support here from the Training & Development team and also more senior
people in the business to help people in that journey.” In discussing the NonStop belief, it’s interesting to look back at where the company has come from. It’s a phrase that epitomises the business’ founder, Kevin Smith. Homeless and living on the streets of London, he maintained an unshakeable belief that he’d be able to turn it all around. His belief is what ensured his company has grown NonStop – even through the recession when many recruitment businesses filed for bankruptcy and NonStop’s own clients were struggling, NonStop as a business continued to grow through the hiring, training and developing of people with no prior experience and through the promotion from within to create management and senior management layers. It’s a business model that has seen the company’s net fee income increase on average 40% year-on-year over the last nine years and given it the perfect platform from which to launch globally within the next couple of years. There’s only one question that remains. Do you have what it takes to be a NonStopper? NonStop is looking for 100 people in the next few months, as well as its usual monthly intakes. THINGS OUR TOP PICKS OF THINGS TO DO this month
ROBBIE WIlliams and Erasure Saturday, August 19
Dammit this guy just gets cooler with age. With a string of hits including Angels, Rock DJ, Feel, and She's The One (with so many more in his 11 solo album career) we've been Robbie fans since the Take That days. Touring on his latest album The Heavy Entertainment Show, Robbie's on stage showmanship required a heavy opening act - pop veterans Erasure. By the way, we've loved Erasure since their Yaz days, not to date ourselves. You should probably go and see this show, and be prepared to dance your ass off. Our favorite way to spend a Satursday morning, casually strolling down the riverside choosing fresh fruits, vegetables, cheeses, sausages, spices, wines and more. Whether you're shopping for the week or just for the moment, this is one of our favourite ways to introduce Europe to our visiting friends. Stay after the market closes for our other Saturday favorite, sitting on the riverside and enjoying a beer or three and waste the day away. Where: Náplavka The riverside near the Vyton Tram stop
AFGHAN WHIGS saturday, August 5
Back in the day, the Afghan Whigs CD was the one we used to play on dates to impress girls by letting them know we were into real music - not that sellout Backstreet Boys crap. We stiill believe can't officially call yourself an alternative music fan and not recognize these guys as key players in alternative music genre. Bands like The National, The Gaslight Anthem, Interpol, The Hold Steady, My Chemical Romance and Jimmy Eat World all cite them as influence. Active from the mid-80's to the early 2000's, the band reformed a few years back and dropped a new album earlier in the year called "In Spades", which we instantly liked because it seemed to pick up on the angsty emotionally charged Whigs we remember. Backstreet's back, alright. Where: Lucerna Štěpánská 61, Nové Město

AnonymouS Bar Michalská 432/12, Praha-Staré Město
At this Old Town location, the bartenders hide behind Guy Fawkes masks (which you may recognize from V for Vendetta). Your cocktail could be served on anything from a metal sword to an IV drip. And among the plush velvet lounges and flamboyant presentation, these guys know how to mix a truly delicious drink. www.anonymousbar.cz
Klub Vzorkovna Národní 339/11, Staré Město
This popular underground maze of rooms near Prague’s National Theater is popular with both hipsters and the international college student set (who have deemed it "The Dog Bar" for the random assortment of bar-owned dogs laying about). The Various rooms might hold an impromtu jam session, a random guy sitting on the floor playing the didgeridoo, wooden lofts overlooking foosball tables, or giggled conversations across rope swings suspended from the ceiling. Drinks can only be bought with electronic bracelets loaded with credit as you enter the club. Don't worry - you get back cash for what you don't drink.

AnonymouS Shrink’s Office Jungmannova 23/11, Nové Město, Praha 2
The latest incarnation from the AnonymouS team takes its inspiration from psychiatrist Hermann Rorscharch. The wordless menu opts for ink-blotted pictures that merely give a sense of each cocktail. Your server may add one or two clarifying questions before asking if you want to know the ingredients of your drink in advance or be surprised. The exposed brick walls and brown leather chairs surround this anticipation with a sense of calm, and the personally blended liquors and interesting garnishes make for some truly original cocktails. www.shrinksoffice.cz/en

COCKTAIL GUIDE The best cocktail bars in Prague( (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).
Tretter's 8@
V kolkovne 3, Praha 1 +420 224 811 165 www.tretters.cz
The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years. So it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. The drinks are incredible – custom cocktails and meticulously made classics, some with a new twist. Tretter’s gets absolutely packed, sometimes out of nowhere. The trick is a reservation, so you’ll want to call ahead.
Parlour 8$
Krakovská 15, Praha 1 +420 777 200 015 www.parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. The good news is you don’t have to worry about finding a menu in English—there is no menu. Instead, your bartender will ask what you like and offer suggestions from there.
L'Fleur 9$
V Kolkovně 920/5, 1, Praha +420 734 255 665 www.lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Mucha-inspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which your bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list.
Anonymous Bar 9# Michalská 432/12, Praha 1 +420 608 280 069
www.anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile. The bar is clever at every turn. Bar and Books 8%8^
Cash Only Bar 8(
Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the more casual in Manisova and slightly more formal in Týnská). The bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings, and of course books (though mostly for visual aesthetics). The cocktails here are serious business, and if you’re looking for a nice Cuban to go with your drink, this is the place to be.
Just around the corner from its older sibling Hemingway’s, this little gem is making its own name with cocktails like Pin-Up Martini, made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne. It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and, you guessed it— the bar doesn’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way, they do serve amazing hot dogs.

Bonvivant's CTC 8&
Prolog is about attention to detail, and they’ve clearly put thought into every aspect of their work. Take the drink menu. An American Physician weighed patients just before and after death in 1907, concluding the weight of the soul to be 21 grams—a moment that inspired Prolog’s 21-drink menu, which serves a reminder to patrons to celebrate life. Seven of those 21 drinks are named after the Seven Deadly Sins.
Bartolomějská 305, Praha 1 +420 775 331 862
Bonvivant's CTC isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and has a cool 1950’s feel with mid-century wood furnishings, a pressed tin ceiling and a checkered floor. Bartenders are a virtual encyclopedia of drink possibilities and suggestions based on your tastes. Incidentally, the “CTC” in the bar’s title actually stands for cocktail tapas café, and it hits the mark on each one, serving some pretty damn tasty dishes and coffee as well.
Uhelný trh 414/9, Praha 1 +420 224 267 266 www.levalmont.cz
Le Valmont is a newcomer, just opened in Spring 2016. The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Milos Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Just take note of the strict dress code at Le Valmont— no hats, hoodies, shorts, tank tops or sandals. Reservations are all but required, since the 100-capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly.

Bodeguita is synonymous with great entertainment, Mojitos, wild parties, dancing, original gastronomy and unforgettable experiences.
The Alchemist Bar 9*
Chances are, if you’ve asked around, you’ve already been recommended to Hemingway’s Bar. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. So reservations are recommended.

CLUB GUIDE
Our Quick Guide to where all the cool kids go AFTER MIDNIGHT
Roxy 6%
Dlouhá 33, Prague 1
The Roxy is one of Prague’s oldest and bestknown clubs. The venue was a popular theatre and ballroom in the 1920’s, but now you’ll find drum and bass, house, techno, and other modern styles on the dancefloor. When the club isn’t hosting a live DJ, it’s the spot for concerts and music festivals.
hard to see why. The club’s well-known team of skilled DJs keep the place pumping with a mixture of R&B, hip-hop, electro and dance music until the wee hours of morning, and the upscale, luxurious atmosphere makes every night feel like a celebration. As an added plus, M1 is also conveniently located in the very center of the city.
hip hop, punk, psychobilly and more can be heard on a weekly basis. This is one of the oldest functioning clubs in Prague and if you’re into it take bus no. 176 up to the Strahov hill and enjoy the vibe...
James Dean 7)
One for the curious bored or brave. Retro has become the Czech home of hard house. Their club nights are full to the rafters until the small hours while go-go dancers whip the energetic clubbers into a house driven frenzy. A very friendly atmosphere with smiling faces and sweating brows as far as the eye can see, there are more locals and fewer tourists here than some of the other large clubs with amazing DJ’s, lasers, and vibes. Dress code is free and easy, flamboyant if you’re feeling daring.
V kolkovně 922/1 www.jamesdean.cz/
Lucerna 6^ Vodičkova 36
One of the largest and most popular music clubs in Prague, Lucerna is known for its weekly concerts and events. But it’s maybe most popular on Friday and Saturday nights, when the club’s huge projection screens come alive with 80’s and 90’s music videos. Partygoers of every age and all walks of life can be seen here, getting down to oldie hits from Blondie to Nirvana.
Cross Club 6& Plynární 23, Prague 7 www.crossclub.cz
Cross Club is a labyrinth of small bars and dancefloors pumping music from dubstep and techno to reggae. The club’s psychedelic, industrial décor is a sight to see in itself—every piece of the building, from the walls to the ceiling, is constructed to move and pulsate with the music. It’s one of the most unique experiences you’ll have with nightlife in Praha, but you might want to grab an Uber. Cross Club is a bit out of the city’s center, but worth the trek.
Meet Factory 6* Ke Sklárně 3213/15 www.meetfactory.cz
This music club, art gallery, theater and cinema is the brainchild of David Černý, the artist responsible for some of Prague’s most famous (and controversial) modern art. A refurbished warehouse stuffed between a motorway and railroad tracks in Smíchov, Meet Factory transforms by night into a hip bar and music venue, where you’ll find local singers and international tours alike.
M1 Lounge 6( Masná 1, Prague 1 www.m1lounge.com
M1 Lounge is a favorite of locals, expats and even passing-through celebrities, and it’s not
Okay, we admit that this one’s kind of kitschy— but only in the best way. Named for the iconic rebel and actor, the bar has a classic 1950’s American diner feel, complete with checkered floors, red vinyl upholstery and lots of chrome. Famous for its larger-than-life statue of James Dean, it also serves some of the best burgers, milkshakes, and French fries in town.

Chapeau Rouge 7&
NEONE 7@
Jakubska 2, Old Town, Praha 1 www.chapeaurouge.cz
Bubenská 1 www.lunchmeat.cz/
Neone got its start as a pop-up party, but it’s since grown into a well-established and respected club in Prague’s electronic music scene known for their superior sound system and live gigs. Electronic music fans, this is the spot where the latest trends in the industry meet innovative artists and dedicated fans.
Radost FX 7#
Bělehradská 120, Prague 2 radostfx.cz
First opened in the early ‘90s just a few years after the Velvet Revolution, Radost FX is open Thursday to Saturday and offers the best of house, R&B and hip hop music—Rihanna even filmed one of her music videos there. Above the club is the venue’s restaurant and cafe, well-known as one of the best brunch spots in all of Prague.
Klub 007 7$
Chaloupeckého 7 www.klub007strahov.cz
Supporting underground and non-mainstream music since 1969, 007 is a legendary club on the Prague music scene. It’s history is rooted in student dissent, providing a welcoming space to students disenchanted with the former regime. 007 offers a healthy assortment of unique bands, DJs, and other musical acts. Music diversity is an emphasis: electro, indie,
SPORT‘S BAR
Retro 7%
Chapeau Rouge is a music clubs that ranks among the biggest in Prague with 3 floors, 4 bars & 3 stages. Chapeau truly has something for everyone! You may even stumble upon it all on your own: it’s in the center right behind Old Town Square and usually has some cool kids smoking a joint right outside its doors. The ground floor of Chapeau is a chill place to meet people from all over the world: travelers and expats alike. Go down one more floor and you’ll come across the dance club where international and local DJs blast out their beats playing pretty much 7 days a week with music in the main bar area being truly eclectic: everything from Balkan rhythms to drum & bass.
U Sudů 7*
Vodičkova 10, Prague 1 www.usudu.cz
U Sudu is the best of both worlds with a wine bar upstairs and an underground, cave-like labyrinth downstairs. When you walk in, don’t stop on the top level. All that is up here is a normal looking bar. Keep walking until you hit the stairs that descend into one of the coolest places to drink on Earth... It is indeed smoky, but get past that and the place is just mythic.

Harley's 7(
Dlouhá 18, 110 00 , Prague 1
Harleys is described as the coolest hell on earth. This American-style biker bar opens late and is always rockin’ and rollin’ with live DJs and music acts. It’s also in a perfect location, just a two-minute walk from Old Town Square. The entire placed is decked out in rock memorabilia ranging from Harley Davidson gear to Ramones and Jack Daniels posters.
La Loca r
Odborů 278/4, Prague 2
Chic, fashionable and a whole lotta fun! One of the very first smoke-free establishments in Prague entertains the crowds all day every day. The night is the time when true party colours of La Loca show. International vibes mixed with a scrumptious selection of sizzling drinks are a guarantee of a big night-out. Add a carefully selected music program - karaoke, 80s & 90s retro parties, DJ performances, live concerts and rooftop gatherings in the summer - and you can rest assured knowing you'll very likely to create memories to remember for a lifetime. Also, some of the most iconic pieces of art in Prague are situated at La Loca.
Café 80's 8)
You can't go wrong with 80's music. Whether you're nostaligic or just appreciative of all things "totally awesome", the two-story venue does features an 80's themed café restaurant on the first floor. But, the real story here is the basement. A nicely sized music club with an illuminated dance floor, plus a large bar and VIP lounge make it a night worthy of the MTV generation.

Tram and Metro Map
Public Transport Tips:
First let people off, before you get on. If someone elderly gets on, give up your seat. It’s not just curtious, it’s expected here. To fit in on the metro and trams wear your headphones. If you don’t have headphones, then play with your phone instead, or read a book or this magazine. If you’ve been drinking, don’t act like an idiot, even with friends.
Late Night: After midnight, trams switch to “Night Service”, which includes a whole new schedule that can be a bit confusing - especially if you’ve had a few drinks. Our recommendation - call an Uber or Liftago or use a taxi to get to your destination.

Exhibitions This month
Lithuanian Film Posters The City of Prague Museum Na Poříčí 52
The exhibition presents the most interesting film posters of Lithuania from the collection of the Lithuanian Theater, Music and Film Museum in Vilnius. Visitors will see 43 posters from the period between 1953 and 2010 designed by the prominent Lithuanian affichists – mostly the graduates of the Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts from after the 1960s. Regardless of the period censorship, the posters show a specific artistic expression, allegorical importance, which remarkably expands the understanding of the films. Exhibit is opened through Thursday, August 21.
Vladimír Boudník
The City of Prague Museum Na Poříčí 52
Presentation of the work of an outstanding Czech graphic artist and painter, a representative of active and structural graphic art, and a ‘Gentle Barbarian’ whose life and work was closely associated with the Libeň and Vysočany quarters of Prague. The works have been lent by Jan Placák’s private collection. Exhibit is opened through Sunday, October 29.
First Scream, First Cry The City of Prague Museum Na Poříčí 52
The exhibition brings focus to the history of attendance at birth from the individual care to the foundation of medical delivery institutions in Prague. The greatest accent is put on the period between the 2nd half of the 18th and the 1st half of the 19th centuries because it was a period of cardinal changes in the attitude for providing help to women while giving birth. The exhibition presents a manifold evidence of the midwife and obstetrics professions, from medical instruments and various tools to the traditions of birth giving, legal documents, and some written records. Exhibit is open through Sunday, October 15.
Burial Mound of Libeň The City of Prague Museum Na Poříčí 52
In 1890, a grave with a skeleton in an extended position was found in Libeň, in the garden in front of the synagogue on today’s Zenklova Street. In addition to a ceramic jug, there were two extraordinarily long bronze pins – measuring 77 cm – on the skeleton’s chest. Based on these findings, the grave originated in the Middle Bronze Age, in particular in the period of the Middle Danube Tumulus Culture (1550–1300 BC). Exhibit is open through Sunday, October 1.
Prague of Charles IV – A Grandiose Building Site in Europe House at the Golden Týnská 630/6
The first stage of the exhibition at the House at the Golden Ring was launched as part of the celebrations of the 700th birth anniversary of Charles IV. Focusing on urban development in Prague and its changes throughout the 14th century, the display accentuates the rule of Charles IV and the House of Luxembourg.
From a Thread to a Shirt / Medieval Textile Production and Dyeing in Prague House at the Golden Týnská 630/6
Textile and its products were important parts of the everyday life of medieval Prague. The exhibition introduces medieval textile and dyeing crafts during the 14th and 15th centuries. Visitors can find various types of textiles, their practical use for everyday life, and the historic fashion of the inhabitants of the New Town of Prague in the High Middle Ages. A unique collection of a few hundred medieval textile fragments discovered during archaeological research of the dump layers in the centre of Prague is the core of the exhibition. Exhibit is open through Sunday, October 29.
Vanished Podskalí and Life on the Vltava Podskalí Custom House at Výtoň
Rašínovo nábřeží 412 The Podskalí Customs House at Výtoň is the last reminder of old Podskalí. In this Renaissance building with a 16th century timber storey, a toll called ‘výtoň’ (referring to the cut logs from rafts) was collected on timber that was floated to Prague. The life of Podskalí raftsmen, timber traders, sand miners, ice diggers, and others whose life was connected with water is presented through historical photographs and tools used by the Podskalí locals. The next part of the exhibition is dedicated to the history of raft and ship transportation near Prague – visitors will again find historical photographs presented with the help of modern technology. Furthermore, the exhibition shows models of ships and a raft. The exhibition has been designed to also attract children.

Crafts in Guilds / The History of Craftsmen’s Association from the Middle Ages to the Present Ctěnice Chateau Bohdanečská 259/1
Introducing the history of crafts and guild association, the permanent exhibition Crafts in Guilds presents one of the world’s largest collections of guild artefacts which is administered by the City of Prague Museum.
Object of the Quarter of a Year: Locksmith Guild Funeral Shield Ctěnice Chateau Bohdanečská 259/1
Locksmithing is one of the oldest crafts. Originally, locksmiths were blacksmiths who later specialised in subtler and technically more demanding metalwork. In the 14th century, there were so many of them in Prague that they found their own guild. They also included in their guild similar crafts such as gunsmiths, spur makers, and clockmakers. Funeral shields were raised above the coffin during a cortege and there was always an even number of them. The locksmith’s guild had four shields from 1611, each of them showing specific signs of the particular group of artisans: locksmiths, spur makers, gunsmiths, and clockmakers. The locksmith’s burial shield features crossed keys, two locks, and names of guild members encircling the shield, all bullion-embroidered.
Ctěnice Chateau / History, Building Development and Reconstruction Ctěnice Chateau Bohdanečská 259/1
The exhibition presents a long and complex history of the Ctěnice domain from the earliest times to the present. It also attempts to briefly present the overall reconstruction of the compound, which was carried out between 1997 and 2004.
History of Vinoř / From Prehistoric Times to the 20th Century Ctěnice Chateau Bohdanečská 259/1
The exhibition, which was devised in cooperation with the Prague-Vinoř Municipal District, presents the history of Vinoř to visitors.
Art Forged in Iron / Blacksmith’s and Locksmith’s Art in the Collections of the City of Prague Museum Ctěnice Chateau Bohdanečská 259/1
The City of Prague Museum’s collection of locks and ironwork was established shortly after the museum’s foundation; today it comprises up to 1,350 items. The first part of the blacksmith and locksmith art exhibition presents examples of the locksmith craft. Visitors will learn about the history of locking mechanisms, lock types, and ironwork. The second part of the exhibition is dedicated to the large-sized blacksmith art; the earliest items come from the Baroque era. Emphasis is put on objects which either were made in Prague or connected their ‘life’ with the city. The current works of blacksmith art are situated in Ctěnice Chateau’s exteriors. Various cultural events, vocational school presentations, and workshops will accompany the exhibition. Exhibit open through Sunday, October 1.
Prague-Těšnov Station / Back in Operation Ctěnice Chateau Bohdanečská 259/1, Prague 9
The new permanent exhibition presents an extinct station of Prague as a model railway (HO scale 1:87) and a locomotive depot. The exhibition gives a chance to visitors to get an idea about the most beautiful station building in Prague which was built between 1872 and 1875 as a prestigious structure of the significant Austrian Northwestern Railway Company. A 3D model of the building including its remarkable sculptural decoration was printed based on the original technical drawings. Exhibit open through Monday, April 9.
Petřín Observation Tower Petřínské sady
A Place to Walk, Enjoy the View, and Learn about Quarrying.
Mirror Maze on Petřín Hill Petřínské sady
The Fight of Students Against the Swedes on Charles Bridge in 1648 – a monumental painting (8 x 10 m), diorama, which was made by the brothers Adolf and Karel Liebscher in 1891.The diorama is under restoration until the end of September 2017.
The Tower Mystery Charles Bridge
On the occasion of the celebrations of Charles IV’s birth anniversary, the City of Prague Museum opened a permanent exhibition in the Old Town Bridge Tower. Since the tower was a part of Charles Bridge and the two structures were founded at the same time, the foundation stone of the bridge might be hidden in the pier located below the tower. The tower’s construction was completed along with the bridge in the early 15th century. For its architectural and artistic aspects, the tower ranks among the greatest highlights of High Gothic structures of Charles IV, not only in Prague but also in (Central) Europe. The tower is distinguished by many authentic details (e.g. mason’s marks), artistic decoration, and its urban appearance. The permanent exhibition presents unquestionable facts as well as various hypotheses, which arouse the visitors’ interest although they cannot be verified. A small presentation of objects retrieved from the Vltava, including the latest findings of the unique riverbed research focused on the riverbed mapping, is installed in the tower’s underground.
Powder Tower
Nám. Republiky 5
This monumental entrance by which the coronation processions of Czech kings entered the Old Town is one of the most significant monuments of Late Gothic Prague. Completed in 1475, the Powder Tower, which formerly
served as a gunpowder store, is still the starting point for the Coronation or Royal Route to Prague Castle. The viewing gallery is located at a height of 44 m.
Custos Turris / City Warden
Town Belfry by St Nicholas Church Malostranské Nám. 556/29
The City of Prague Museum prepared a comprehensive permanent exhibition about the arduous life of tower wardens, the history of the structure, the development of the town watchtower service, and the belfry’s misuse during the totalitarian regime. Visitors can take a look into the tower warden’s flat of the second half of the 18th century, which includes a smoke kitchen – the only publicly accessible one in Prague. This part continues with a signalling room – where the tower warden did his job. The interior of this room corresponds to the first half of the 19th century. The second flat of the tower warden dates to 1891 when the signalling function was cancelled and the warden looked after the clock. The exhibition also presents the Baroque sewage system, and visitors may admire the bell chamber with a bell chair and St Nicholas Bell of 1576. The tower also includes the unique ‘Kajka’ – an observation post of the State Security on the very top of the belfry, which was used until 1990.
Lesser Town Bridge Tower Charles Bridge
The Lesser Town Bridge Tower is situated at one end of Charles Bridge, and is the ancient gate to the Lesser Town..For tourists arriving from the Old Town, this is the main pedestrian entrance to the Lesser Town, a lovely quarter of Prague with restaurants, bars and boutique shops. The Lesser Town Bridge Tower was built in the second half of the 15th century under the rule of King George of Podebrady. The model for its construction was undoubtedly the Old Town Bridge Tower, constructed earlier on the opposite side of Charles Bridge.Connected to the Lesser Town Bridge Tower by a walkway is a smaller tower, Judith‘s Tower, the only remaining part of the original Prague bridge, the Romanesque Judith‘s Bridge, which was destroyed by floods in 1342.Inside the Lesser Town Bridge Tower is an exhibition dedicated to the eventful history of Charles Bridge, with graphic descriptions of the invading armies that have crossed it. There are stairs to the top, which you can climb for a fine view over the Lesser Town, Charles Bridge, the Vltava River and across into Prague‘s Old Town.
New Mill Water Tower Nové mlýny 827/3A
The New Mill Water Tower, which is open to the public for the first time ever, presents a permanent exhibition about Prague fires in the past and a history of Prague firefighters. This technical structure was erected after the mid-17th century to provide a water supply to the surroundings of the New Town of Prague. In the 15th century, a wooden water tower was on the site of today’s tower; a sumptuous stone tower was built between 1602 and 1606 with a lookout area referred to as ‘Lusthaus’ on the top floor.
History of Fire Fighting and Fires in Prague New Mill Water Tower
Nové mlýny 827/3A
The exhibition presents the threat of fire for Prague many centuries ago as well as in recent times. Furthermore, the methods used by the metropolis residents to defend against the destructive element will be presented along with the development of technical solutions and the institutional establishment of fire fighting. The form and layout of the permanent exhibition are tailored to the spatial conditions of the New Mill Water Tower. Digital reproductions of Prague vistas, disastrous fires in Prague, and prominent fire fighters with their gear and tools will be presented. The reproductions come from the collections of the City of Prague Museum and photo archives of the Fire Rescue Service of the City of Prague. The exhibition concept is based on multimedia elements. In addition to specific depictions of fire fighting via picture projection, prints, photographs, and historical textbooks for fire fighters and fire fighting codes, visitors will have a chance to experience the terrifying moments during vast fires in medieval and early modern Prague. The feeling of the threat of fire affecting all quarters of Prague will be created via sensual illusions.

The Museum of Alchemists and Magicians of Old Prague By Adrian McLaughlin Man trying to turn his ambition into gold is nothing new. In Medieval times, there was a primitive science that offered exactly this. Alchemy, the quest to change metals into gold, cure disease, and prolong life had a huge place in the history of Europe. Although the claims were deemed unsuccessful, the legends of alchemy still live on today in Prague. No one will ever know why alchemists were so drawn to the city of Prague, but many visitors claim they still feel the magic when they walk through the streets. Why is this? Legend has it Prague was once the capital of alchemy. Over 200 alchemists lived in the city and evidence of the dark arts still exist in its buildings and towers. Whether you believe in it or not, visiting Prague without exploring the ancient alchemy history would be a disservice to yourself. At The Museum of Alchemists and Magicians of Old Prague, you can dive into the best alchemic history that Prague has to offer. It’s less than a block away from our office on Nerudova, and the owner offered to give us the special scoop on the newly renovated building. As fans of a) potions with the ability to keep us young forever and b) mysterious cocktails, we obviously had to check it out. And it was great! But also eerie, mainly because they had realistic figures of alchemists, a devil getting sucked into the ceiling, and replicas of spine chilling experiments. There’s trouble “brewing” in every inch of this place. On the first floor, you’ll come across most of the history of alchemy. You’ll learn the legends of King Charles IV and Emperor Rudolf II. It’s pretty factual, but there are plenty of things that will grab your attention. Almost every inch of this place is covered in alchemist symbols, scribbles, and artifacts. You’ll also enter a replica of Faust’s House, one of the most magical places in Prague. It was once the home of pagan goddess Moran, and for centuries many spooky legends have haunted it. The owner told us that four artists and cinematography professionals spent four months decorating it from morning to night. That’s some serious dedication. The museum isn’t just for history fans either; there are plenty of interactive displays to keep anyone entertained. You can boil a secret potion made of phosphorus (the secret ingredient for the elixirs), light the furnaces that changes common stones into rich metals, or watch the process of Homunculus- the process of creating artificial humans. After that, you’ll take a tour of the Kelley Tower, which is rumored to be the laboratory of one of the most famous alchemists, Edward Kelley. Climbing the actual steps up the laboratory feels pretty magical, maybe because it’s one of the oldest wooden staircases in Prague. Next, you’ll enter Kelley’s alchemic lab through a big wooden door.
Every inch of this place has been decked out just how you’d expect a 16th Century dark science lab to look. Although they went under recent renovations, the structure of the building is still 100% authentic. While you walk the creaky wooden floors, you’ll find never-ending bookshelves of secret potions, learn about some of the success and failures of the famous experiments, and hear legends about famous alchemist’s contributions in Prague- such as William Shakespeare. Who knew! The guide mentioned to us that the stairs didn’t stop at the lab, so a few of us curiously ascended to the top. Here you can find a pretty incredible view of the Prague’s orange roofs. They even rent out this space for romantic dinners (no secret love potion included). At the end of the tour, you’re welcomed downstairs into the Kellyxir Lab Pub, where you can
taste ancient alchemic recipes. Our favorite drink was Kytil’s Elixir, mysterious-looking lemonade that gave us so much energy it could put coffee out of business! The best part was that the whole thing is decked out with actual alchemical symbols and chemical pipes that come from the Kelley tower. Come at night for an extra mystical experience. In short, if you want to feel like Edward Kelley minus the whole -getting imprisoned for being a conman and stealing your coworker’s wife- thing, head over to The Museum of Alchemists and Magicians of Old Prague, located in Malá Strana.

"After the war, Czechoslovakia hosted students from Yugoslavia for two years. My father went into a hospital one day and met one of them. He was a fifteen year old boy, the same age as I was, and he came from the Serbo-Croatian part. He said that members of Ustaša, the croatian fascists, had shot his parents in front of his eyes. He himself still had all kinds of injuries. He started to come to us for a lunch – even though we didn’t have much, my mom always found something for him. He used to say: "I’ve found new mom and dad!" But after two years Stalin and Tito had a quarell with each other and so he had to return home. But we still exchanged letters and he came back many times. Even with his wife and their children. When my parents were still alive, they used to host them in 42

their house. For me it was a joy to share moments of his life with him. Later I also visited him with my husband. They lived in Belgrade but both of them were parents and so they used to spend summertime in Prokike, not far from the Croatian coast. He had built a lodge for them. When we were there, he was showing us the place and said: ‚I have two daughters. One half will belong to first one, the other hald to the second.‘ He introduced us to his neighbour, saying: "He’s my friend, a Croat. I’m a Serb but that doesn’t matter." But in 1990s a civil war broke out in Yugoslavia. He came here after the events and said: "They shot everything to pieces. There’s no lodge anymore." The whole family was struck by the events. After the war one of his daughters came here on her own. My
husband had already passed away back then and so I accommodated her in my flat in Libeň. There were a chiming clock on the wall and she said: "Please, take away all the clocks, I cannot hear any chiming or ticking." It was nerve-wracking for her. Later he wrote to me that she died. Just imagine – he lived through two wars and such tragedies. He has widowed, he’s old, he’ll never come here again. But we still write to each other. He says that he uses dictionary but we still write to each other in Czech. He really likes to think back about his time in Czechoslovakia, about the love with which he was received. He says that he’s found a second home in here.“
