Czech garnet…. red as blood, full of secrets, passions and magic. Did you know that the Czech garnet is, among other garnets mined in many locations in the world, as unique as the Colombian emeralds or the Burmese rubies? Garnets also have many legends. For centuries they have been considered as a stone of pilgrims and travelers who wore them as a talisman. According to legend, Noah had a lamp made of a garnet on his ark, which helped him navigate the ship in the evening darkness. It was rumored that glowing night garnets would protect their wearer from evil. In the Middle Ages, the Knights used the garnets not only for decoration, but also for their protective power from injuries, as it gave the warriors a sense of immortality. Another legend claims that tiny crystals of red garnets are fossilized drops of blood of the gods. Garnets symbolize fire, blood, and the heart, making it a favorite gift for wedding anniversaries or romantic gestures. Let yourself be inspired by the beauty of the Czech garnet, get to know its power and strength…. Today, Granát Turnov is the largest producer of jewelry made with unique Czech garnets., including the Czech garnet. It was created by the unification of smaller private companies of goldsmith tradesmen in 1953. In order to ensure the production of jewellery, Granát Turnov obtained an exclusive license to extract Czech garnets and became the owner of the mines which extract the raw garnet material. The original Czech garnet jewellery, made by the traditional manufacturer Granát, d.u.v. Turnov, is seen as one of the symbols of the Czech Republic. It is not only popular in our country, but sought after by foreign tourists, who take it as an exceptional souvenir.
There’s only one true Czech Garnet...Granát Turnov The cooperative is the owner of the trademark and of origin "Czech Garnet" and "Czech Garnet Jewellery". The Garnet team is registered with the hallmark and guarantees the authenticity of the precious metals and stones used. Each Ceramic Garnet comes with a Certificate of Gems and, together with the G-brand Gemstone, guarantees stone foundations and jewellery. Today's collection features a plethora of classical models that have been expanded over the last few years to modern jewellery design. This combination of Czech garnet and moldavin is very popular and this collection includes men's jewellery, children’s jewellery and also symbolic jewellery, such as crosses, hearts, stars, moon signs, letters and animals. We also offer a collection of ladies silver watches, gift items, glass and jewellery, all made from Czech garnet.

remembering a velvet
novembeR The month of November has a special place in the hearts of Czechs and Slovakians. On November 17th, 28 years ago, thousands of Czechoslovakians stood in protest in Wenceslas Square, waving flags and shaking their keys in unity to symbolize the door of communism was closing. Within a few days, the protests grew from 200,000 to 500,000 people, and even began spreading throughout all of Czechoslovakia. A single non-violent voice had been found and on November 28th, the Communist Party announced the end of their 41 year rule. Czech writer Václav Havel, founder of the Civic Forum party, played a major role in the Velvet Revolution. The large crowds of protestors erupted into cheers when

they found out their non-violent protest had been victorious, showing power of the people and the beginning of change and reform. The end of the one-party government meant elections would now be liberal and fair, as shown in the this year’s recent October legislative elections where 31 parties and movements were registered, this being the highest to date in Czech Republic’s modern history. On the 29th December 1989, Havel made the unlikely transformation from playwright to president, marking both the end of the Velvet Revolution and the Communist Party. The Velvet Revolution shows was just one stop along the path in his country’s rich and cultured history, which can be found in many historical
and cultural sites that span hundreds of years in the making. This magazine includes a variety of key places to visit in Prague, including authentic Czech shops, restaurants and historical sites, giving you a real sense of Czech culture – both of yesterday and today. First let people off, before you get on. If someone elderly gets on, give up your seat. It’s not just curtious, it’s expected here. To fit in on the metro and trams wear your headphones. If you don’t have headphones, then play with your phone instead, or read a book or this magazine. If you’ve been drinking, don’t act like an idiot, even with friends.
Public Transport Tips:
Tram and Metro Map Late Night: After midnight, trams switch to “Night Service”, which includes a whole new schedule that can be a bit confusing - especially if you’ve had a few drinks. Our recommendation - call an Uber or Liftago or use a taxi to get to your destination.

COCKTAIL GUIDE The best cocktail bars in Prague( (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).
Tretter's
V kolkovne 3, Praha 1
www.tretters.cz
The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years. So it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. Number 82 on the map. +420 224 811 165 for Reservations
Parlour Krakovská 15, Praha 1 www.parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. Number 84 on the map. +420 777 200 015 for Reservations. L'Fleur V Kolkovně 920/5, 1, Praha www.lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Muchainspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which your bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list. Number 94 on the map. +420 734 255 665 for Reservations
Anonymous Bar Michalská 12, Praha 1 www.anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile. The bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender your likes and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the secret drink menu printed in UV ink and read with a small blacklight. Reservations are taken only until 9pm. Number 93 on the map. +420 608 280 069 for Reservations. Le Valmont
Uhelný trh 414/9, Praha 1
www.levalmont.cz Le Valmont is a newcomer, just opened in Spring 2016. The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Milos Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Just take note of the strict dress code at Le Valmont—no hats, hoodies, shorts, tank tops or sandals. Reservations are all but required, since the 100-capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly. Number 90 on the map. +420 224 267 266 for Reservations.
Black Angel's Staroměstské nám. 29, Praha 1 www.blackangels.cz Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Old Town astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. With high cellar ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. +420 224 213 807 for Reservations. Bar and Books
Manesova 64, Praha 2
and Týnská 19, Praha 1 Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the more casual in Manisova and slightly more formal in Týnská). The bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings,
and of course books (though mostly for visual aesthetics). Number 85 and 86 on the map.
Bonvivant's CTC P1
Bartolomějská 305,
Bonvivant's CTC isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and has a cool 1950’s feel with mid-century wood furnishings, a pressed tin ceiling and a checkered floor. Bartenders are a virtual encyclopedia of drink possibilities and suggestions based on your tastes. Incidentally, the “CTC” in the bar’s title actually stands for cocktail tapas café, and it hits the mark on each one, serving some pretty damn tasty dishes and coffee as well. +420 775 331 862 for Reservations.
Bugsy's
Pařížská 1068/10, Praha 1 www.bugsysbar.cz Bugsy’s is another bar with a great history, popping up just after the Velvet Revolution. Their one constant has been their attention to detail and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands in stock, as well as over 90 single malt whiskeys and 100 types of rum. Number 95 on the map. +420 224 810 287 For Reservations.
Hemingway's
Karolíny Světlé 26, Praha 1 www.hemingwaybar.cz Chances are, if you’ve asked around, you’ve already been recommended to Hemingway’s Bar. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. So reservations are recommended. Number 97 on the map. +420 773 974 764 for Reservations.
Cash Only Bar Liliova 3, Prague 1 www.cashonlybar.cz Just around the corner from its older sibling Hemingway’s, this little gem is making its own
name with cocktails like Pin-Up Martini, made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne. It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and, you guessed it—the bar doesn’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way, they do serve amazing hot dogs. Number 89 on the map. No Reservations.
Oblaca Žižkov Television Tower, Praha 3
www.oblaca.cz
High atop the Žižkov Television Tower, Oblaca is making better cocktails through science. Oblaca’s Aleš J. Števlík, genius mixologist gone mad scientist (maybe that explains the drink served in a test tube). Števlík deploys molecular mixology in his cocktail designs, exploring the physical and chemical transformations of ingredients that occur when making a cocktail. 92 on the map. + 420 210 320 086 for Reservations.
La Bodeguita del Medio Kaprova 19/5, Praha 1
www.labodeguitadelmedio.cz With it's colonial-style interior straight from Old Havana, La Bodeguita is on point. In addition to great food, bar staff have perfected their craft with regional drinks, from the Cuba Libre to the Mojito. There's a live Cuban band several nights of the week and an amazing cigar selection as well (La Bodeguita was one of the first cigar bars in Prague). . Number 97 on the map. +420 224 813 922 for Reservations.
Alchemist Bar Provaznická 1, Praha 1
www.thealchemistbar.cz A relative newcomer on the scene, Achemist is turning out quality prohibition style drinks in their ornate classicly decorated location at the bottom of Wenclases Square. Number 98 on the map. +420 251 510 940 for Reservations.
CLUB GUIDE Roxy Dlouhá 33, Prague 1
The Roxy is one of Prague’s oldest and bestknown clubs. The venue was a popular theatre and ballroom in the 1920’s, but now you’ll find drum and bass, house, techno, and other modern styles on the dancefloor. When the club isn’t hosting a live DJ, it’s the spot for concerts and music festivals.
Lucerna
Vodičkova 36
One of the largest and most popular music clubs in Prague, Lucerna is known for its weekly concerts and events. But it’s maybe most popular on Friday and Saturday nights, when the club’s huge projection screens come alive with 80’s and 90’s music videos. Partygoers of every age and all walks of life can be seen here, getting down to oldie hits from Blondie to Nirvana. Number 66 on the map.
Cross Club
Plynární 23, Prague 7 www.crossclub.cz
Cross Club is a labyrinth of small bars and dancefloors pumping music from dubstep and techno to reggae. The club’s psychedelic, industrial décor is a sight to see in itself—every piece of the building, from the walls to the ceiling, is constructed to move and pulsate with the music. It’s one of the most unique experiences you’ll have with nightlife in Praha, but you might want to grab an Uber. Cross Club is a bit out of the city’s center, but worth the trek. Number 67 on the map.
Meet Factory
Ke Sklárně 3213/15 www.meetfactory.cz
This music club, art gallery, theater and cinema is the brainchild of David Černý, the artist responsible for some of Prague’s most famous (and controversial) modern art. A refurbished warehouse stuffed between a motorway and railroad tracks in Smíchov, Meet Factory transforms
24
by night into a hip bar and music venue, where you’ll find local singers and international tours alike. Number 68 on the map.
M1 Lounge Masná 1, Prague 1 www.m1lounge.com
M1 Lounge is a favorite of locals, expats and even passing-through celebrities, and it’s not hard to see why. The club’s well-known team of skilled DJs keep the place pumping with a mixture of R&B, hip-hop, electro and dance music until the wee hours of morning, and the upscale, luxurious atmosphere makes every night feel like a celebration. Number 69 on the map.
James Dean V kolkovně 922/1 www.jamesdean.cz/
Okay, we admit that this one’s kind of kitschy— but only in the best way. Named for the iconic rebel and actor, the bar has a classic 1950’s American diner feel turned nightclub late night. Number 70 on the map.
NEONE
Bubenská 1 www.lunchmeat.cz/
Neone got its start as a pop-up party, but it’s since grown into a well-established and respected club in Prague’s electronic music scene known for their superior sound system and live gigs. Electronic music fans, this is the spot where the latest trends in the industry meet innovative artists and dedicated fans. Number 72 on the map.
Radost FX radostfx.cz
Bělehradská 120, Prague 2
First opened in the early ‘90s just a few years after the Velvet Revolution, Radost FX is open Thursday to Saturday and offers the best of house, R&B and hip hop music—Rihanna even
THE PRAGUE VISITOR | NOVEMBER 2017
filmed one of her music videos there. Above the club is the venue’s restaurant and cafe, wellknown as one of the best brunch spots in all of Prague. Number 73 on the map.
Retro
Francouzská 75/4, Prague 2 www.retropraha.cz
One for the curious bored or brave. Retro has become the Czech home of hard house. Their club nights are full to the rafters until the small hours while go-go dancers whip the energetic clubbers into a house driven frenzy. A very friendly atmosphere with smiling faces and sweating brows as far as the eye can see, there are more locals and fewer tourists here than some of the other large clubs with amazing DJ’s, lasers, and vibes. Dress code is free and easy, flamboyant if you’re feeling daring. Number 75 on the map.
Chapeau Rouge
Jakubska 2, Old Town www.chapeaurouge.cz
Chapeau Rouge is a music clubs that ranks among the biggest in Prague with 3 floors, 4 bars & 3 stages. Chapeau truly has something for everyone! You may even stumble upon it all on your own: it’s in the center right behind Old Town Square The ground floor of Chapeau is a chill place to meet people from all over the world: travelers and expats alike. Number 77 on the map.
U Sudů
Vodičkova 10, Prague 1 www.usudu.cz
U Sudu is the best of both worlds with a wine bar upstairs and an underground, cave-like labyrinth downstairs. When you walk in, don’t stop on the top level. All that is up here is a normal looking bar. Keep walking until you hit the stairs that descend into one of the coolest
places to drink on Earth... It is indeed smoky, but get past that and the place is just mythic. Number 78 on the map.
Harley's
Dlouhá 18, 110 00 , Prague 1
Harleys is described as the coolest hell on earth. This American-style biker bar opens late and is always rockin’ and rollin’ with live DJs and music acts. It’s also in a perfect location, just a twominute walk from Old Town Square. Number 79 on the map.
La Loca
Odborů 278/4, Prague 2
Chic, fashionable and a whole lotta fun! One of the very first smoke-free establishments in Prague entertains the crowds all day every day. The night is the time when true party colours of La Loca show. International vibes mixed with a scrumptious selection of sizzling drinks are a guarantee of a big night-out. Add a carefully selected music program - karaoke, 80s & 90s retro parties, DJ performances, live concerts and rooftop gatherings in the summer - and you can rest assured knowing you'll very likely to create memories to remember for a lifetime.
Café 80's 8)
You can't go wrong with 80's music. Whether you're nostaligic or just appreciative of all things "totally awesome", the two-story venue does features an 80's themed café restaurant on the first floor. But, the real story here is the basement. A nicely sized music club with an illuminated dance floor, plus a large bar and VIP lounge make it a night worthy of the MTV generation. Number 80 on the map.
Alchemist Bar's Black Sun
Cash Only Bar's Espresso Martini
A sweet tasting drink with a unique look that is sure to satisfy your taste buds. This is for anyone that is looking to drink whiskey, but with a mix of winter’s flavors. The flavors include dark crème de cacao, homemade foam from egg whites and topped with mango vanilla foam
Our two favorite things meet - coffee and alcohol with this nice cocktail from the little sister of Hemmingway Bar. Of course no trip to the Cash Only Bar would be complete without an accompanying hot dog or bit of popcorn, perfect snacks to cozy up to when it's cold out

WINTER
COCKTAILS T O WA R M YO U U P
Bugsy’s Bar's Bohemian Fizz:
The temperature has dropped, but the bar is open.
Created by Bugsy’s own bartender, Erik Rosemberg, this cocktail contains a unique mix of two Czech style drinks. It has Becherovka (Czech herbal liquor), rhubarb, tonic, lemon, cream and an egg white mixed in with cinnamon sprinkled on top. The final taste of the cocktail reminds you of sitting in front of a warm fireplace during the cold winter months.
Parlour: Uncreated Customers have the opportunity to “transform their ideas into drinks” at this bar (with the barman's help of course). Therefore, our bartender created his own winter cocktail for us. Containing two types of whiskey, ginger liquor, chinachina, vermouth and a drop of sugar, it has a strong and flavorful taste. They can create this for you or you can mix and match your own flavors of winter!

Bohemian Alternative Bar Tour
By Alex Shoemaker Prague may not be the largest of cities, but when it comes to bars it has a wide variety, where you can experience great drinks and famous Czech beer in scenic locations. Daragh Lawlor, born and raised in Dublin, opened Bohemian Bar Tours as a way of showing visitors the best bars that Prague has to offer. Daragh believes that his previous experience of working as a chef in a variety of restaurants around the world has made it much easier for him to design the tours, because he understands what the guests are looking for. Bohemian Bar Tours offers three different tours; the Letna tour, the Zizkov tour and the Beer Garden tour, with each tour providing a unique experience, showing some of Prague’s coolest neighborhoods. The Letná tour explores some of the best bars and clubs surrounding the Mala Strana area. This tour not only includes five large beers from four of the bars, but you can even try white Absinth, a glass of Champagne and if you’re feeling hungry the tour offers an organic cheeseburger en route. The
first bar is populated mainly by locals, giving you the chance to experience a real Czech bar, whilst also giving you a great opportunity to get to know the other guests on the tour. The next bar has an incredible variety beers, with around 300 different Czech and foreign beers. The last stop on the tour then takes you to a very popular club in Prague, where you can grab a drink, listen to some music and enjoy the rest of the night! The second tour which Daragh offers is the Zizkov tour, which goes through the neighborhood famously known for it’s TV Tower. Once known as “Red Zizkov” during Communist Rule, it is now one of the hottest spots for students, artists and musicians to congregate in hipster bliss. The tour has an eclectic mix of stops, from a family-run Czech restaurant, to a hipster bar, to an art club. This tour deal includes four large beers, one top-shelf cocktail and traditional Czech marinated hermelin cheese with caraway bread, making sure there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The final tour available takes visitors through five of Prague’s most beautiful beer gardens, kicking it off of course with the famous Letna beer garden.
Once the tour begins, Letna beer gardens give you the chance to view one of the most beautiful panoramic sights of Prague. Each garden is unique, full of interesting history and has a quirky location, including an active railway station to a garden run by students from the faculty of humanities. This tour includes six large Czech beers, which you can enjoy whilst relaxing in the gardens and taking in the views. Not only do you get to enjoy great drinks, food and locations during this tour, but Daragh shares stories about life in the Czech Republic, comparing to how it was under communist rule, so you can even learn about Czech history too. The main priority of Bohemian Alternative Bar Tours is making sure everybody has a good time and Daragh even makes sure a taxi takes you home at the end of the night. Signing up for these tours is quick and easy, just go on their website at bohemianalternativebartours. com and choose the tour and date which suits you best, and enjoy a great night on the town!

We are the first fear house in Central Europe. Do you like horror stories and adrenalin? We are here for you. This scary tour of our underground space of more than 500 m2 will give you an unforgettable experience full of suspense. Come alone or with your friends or colleagues. The Fear House also has a horror bar where you can enjoy frighteningly good signature drinks, burgers, wings and more.

INTO THE FIRE
EXHIBITION HARNESSES FIRE'S ROLE IN Prague's History Wandering up the cool, grey corridors in the New Mill Water Tower, you may hear the quiet trickling of water. As you near the upper levels, perhaps you’ll feel sweat on your brow, or heat on your neck. This isn’t your body playing tricks on you-- it is the new exhibit’s push and pull of water and fire. Though recently remodeled, the New Mill Water Tower (Novomlýnská vodárenská věž) is one of the oldest of its kind in Prague. According to Karel Kučera, the curator of the city’s towers, the New Mill’s story began in the 15th century. Built near the turn of the Vltava just northwest of Namesti Republiky, its location was ideal for gathering river water to disperse to Prague’s New Town, stretching all the way to the National Museum at the top of Wenceslas Square. The first structure, made of wood, had to reach higher than all of the other buildings. A mill helped push filtered river water through a wooden pipe to the top of the tower, where it was kept in a small iron pool. It could then move back down the tower through another wooden pipe, using the force of gravity to distribute the drinking water to lower parts of the city. Upon entering the tower’s office, look to your right. You will notice a recess in the wall, where a fireplace stood more than 200 years ago, its fire kept pipes from freezing in the winter. This is where fire first met water, though likely no one guessed the same structure would one day hold a permanent exhibition called Prague on Fire!. Martin Hejl is the exhibition’s art director, who along with his creative team and the exhibition architect, Bronislav Stratil, composed the exhibition as “a bridge between movie-making, museum storytelling, and art installations.” In room 2 of the exhibition, we can see how fire was first a slave to water, in this tower and others like it. Ironically, it wasn’t until the current stone structure was built in the 1600s that the tower became vulnerable. The inner labyrinth of wooden beams surrounding the two main pipes was eventually replaced by wooden stairs, some of which you will use during your tour. If you glance down, you’ll notice an ocassional burn mark, a vestige of the tower’s own fires burned into these salvaged steps. The first of these fires was in 1689, though little is known about it. According to towercurator, Kučera, the second fire was a result of the Prussian invasion and the siege of Prague in 1757-1758, the severest bombing in the history of the city. Water towers were targeted in particular, so that Prague’s fire brigades would lose the ability to put out the flames. This brings us to the tower’s third level, which shares the fictionalized, yet historical, perspectives of Prague’s firefighters and those connected to their lives. Here, we remember that fire wasn’t, and isn’t, just an industrial tool, but a real threat to people’s lives. In room 3, you can choose from six perspectives, including a young boy who idolizes the brave firemen, the widow of a fallen hero, and the coughing, smoky “ghost” of one of these men. Choose a screen, pick up an earpiece and absorb the stories each character tells. Hejl’s design team imagined this tower-made-museum as “not just a parade of uniforms and technology, but something with a human story behind it.” The human history of Prague’s fires continues as you move to the next level. At each turn of the stairs, there is a large white projection on the wall, with small quotes from firefighter’s diaries. Each circle commands the reader, in Czech, to behave like a firefighter, ordering two ladders to be set against the building, or more water to be thrust on the flames. Though the tower is not on fire, of course, these
Novomlýnská vodárenská věž is located at Nové mlýny 827/3A, 110 00 Nové Město glimpses into the past keep the threat alive. Such eyeopening comes to its height in the fourth room. Here, we see what Hejl considers the “heart of the exhibition.” We enter their “tessaract” room, lined with mirrors on two walls, as well as the floor and ceiling. On the third wall, a site-specific film plays, full of red, orange and yellow animations of a “fire girl.”The viewer is immediately immersed in her excitement and warmth. She begins as a collector of fires, flipping through postcards and images of Prague’s history aflame. She claims, “without fire, Prague would not be Prague,” and speaks with awe about arsonists and other causes of past fires. Yet by the end of the film, the fire girl becomes melancholic, realizing the overpowering danger of this element, because “through the red, everything becomes black.” She works as the tower’s “white lady” or ghost, says Hejl, who draws the visitor in with fear, yet keeps you from turning away. Hejl and his team have created images that are “essentially beautiful, but show disaster.” But while room 4 is the exhibition’s heart, it is not the peak. On the fifth level, in the room which once held the water tower’s reservoir, we get a glimpse of the fire that burned down Prague’s National Theater in 1881. This room is quiet and eerie, the story starting with a single match. First we see projected newspaper clipping and illustrations of the fire, which tell us that it burnt down most of the decades-long cultural project just before its grand opening. So the creative team wanted to capture the feeling that Czech “culture was burning,” as Hejl puts it. The room slowly catches fire--from one burning match it becomes a sea of flames. The projected wooden beams, recalling both the structure of the theater and the water tower itself, suddenly explode in embers to the score of Bedřich Smetana’s opera, Libuše. When the logs fall, blazing, toward the ground, you have to remind yourself they’re not real. Hejl explains, “the exhibition is a gradient, going from abstract to hyper-realistic.” The exhibition moves from the black and white of the first few rooms rooms to reds, oranges and yellows, and finally the brown of wood and grey of ashes in the fifth installation.
When you leave room 5, overcome by the destructive nature of fire, you will climb the last of the semi-charred steps to the top of the tower. The final installment is called “Horizons,” and it feels like you can see past the end of the city from this height. Once a VIP summer club, used by nobility in the second half of 17th and 18th century for dinner parties, the original room was destroyed in one of the fires. Yet the curator, Kučera, points out the preserved relief along the ceiling and the shape of the room, in which you can still see the style of Emperor Rudolf II’s reign. In the center of the room there is now a long screen which shows an animated timeline of Prague’s fires. Here is the full extent and context of fire’s history in the city, from medieval blazes to more modern disasters. And from this final recap, you can turn your gaze to the future. This room was once the tower’s “Lusthaus,” meaning “place of joy,” and the exhibition tries to capture that feeling once again. Hejl says they designed this room as “something relaxing, and targeted to the younger audience,” but it will definitely appeal to everyone. Pedestal binoculars are installed in five of the windows, with a set of headphones is attached to each one. Put them on and look into the viewfinder, and each pair will depict a different site-specific scene of fire fighting. Helicopters aid a contemporary building on fire in the view of the present. A giant robot, extinguishing his burning fists atop a dystopian Letna Park can be seen through another lens. For those seeking a utopian scene, look north of the tower, where firefighters with jet packs quickly save a burning skyscraper. Whichever scenes you view, though, the designers are satisfied that their exhibit tells “a story with a happy ending.” As you glide back down the steps to exit the tower, listen again to the quiet sounds of the water. As you turn each corner, look back at the firefighters’ words and take comfort that while this exhibition conjures the beauty and terror of fire, here in the New Mill Water Tower, water still wins.

„I’m thinking that I should have my pocket repaired – I was learning how to use brakes. I bought myself a skateboard, despite my age. I fulfilled my dream with a thirty year delay. I grew up in the region of Bruntál and in mid-1980s, when I was around ten, a boy from Prague once came and had a skateboard. He let me ride it and I loved it. I assigned a task to my whole family to get me a skateboard but it was simply not possible to get it in our region. I was sad about it but on the other hand, it was just one of five desired items that I wanted at some moment of my boyhood. My parents did manage to get me a bicycle with a derailleur. I didn’t get a sword but my wife promised to buy me one for my fiftieth birth42
day. And I remembered the dream of having a skateboard around the time I was turning forty. I teach cybernetics and robotics at Czech Technical University, I was working in California for some time and I used to ride a bike to the university. But somebody stole it from me after only two weeks. I noticed that students rode longboards and I thought that I might use it as a way of transport. And so I did fulfill the old dream of mine. Actually, I didn’t see it as something bygone – maybe I’m just slow but everything seems to go so fast. It seems to me that it was just now when I wanted the skateboard. At a moment I wanted it, a few things happened after that – high school, university, a short time at work, one, two –

and I still want it. I have met a classmate from my elementary school recently and I boasted that I started playing with it, that I ride it downhill for instance, and he said: ‚Dude, what you wanna prove to yourself?‘ I told him: ‚It’s not like that at all! I don’t need to delude myself into thinking that I’m young. Because I am still young!’“
