Let's Eat. Just over a year ago, we launched The Prague Visitor, and with it - our monthly Restaurant Guide. At the time, it was based on restaurants we had all been to and spoke highly of. Needless to say we've certainly eaten at quite a few places since then, and thought you might appreciate an update on where we're eating these days. We know this magazine is certain to help you during your stay in Prague, but we've also brought in some friends just to make sure you have an amazing time. We've curated what we feel are Prague's best local travel guides in our Visitor Centre (at Nerudova 25, just in front of the castle).

Taste of Prague's Foodie Guide is from our favorite local Food Tour - with lots of culinary tips, The Green City Guide is like a bible for eco-minded travelers, and the Prague Superguide Edition No. 3 is like a no-nonsense survival guide to living like a local while you're here. Trust us, these books will make your trip even more special - and like the beer here -they're not expensive. Speaking of Taste of Prague, this month we had an opportunity to sit down with the founders of Taste of Prague and talk...well...food. We also were fortunate enough to meet up with celebrity chef and television personality Zdenek Pohlreich, who
has been referred to as the Gordon Ramsey of the Czech Republic and get his views and outlook on Czech culinary culture – and it’s a must-read. There's lots to do this month that doesn’t involve food as well, including over 400 events which we’ve laid out for you in this month’s calendar. We’d like to thank all our readers and partners for the continued support. If you’re looking for more cool stuff to do while you’re here, make sure you connect with us on our website and like us on Facebook. We’ll see you next month!

Taste of Prague
LOcal food tour is totally worth the weight
By Adrian McLaughlin When the duo of Jan and Zuzi started Taste of Prague in 2011, neither of them had been on a food tour, and they didn’t know how to make a website (she was a lawyer, and he was a translator, after all). But this local couple did have two ingredients that were far more important: vision and passion. “We wanted to provide a different experience than just sightseeing,” Jan explains, “and to let people experience tourism differently than they did twenty years ago.” The walking side of the tour should be familiar to most Prague visitors. Cobblestoned streets from Old Town to the Prague Castle have worn out millions of soles (and likely a few weary souls) since the borders opened in 1989. But visiting historic monuments only scratch the surface of Czech culture – there’s also Czech’s culinary culture as well. Taste of Prague started with a little wit, a lot of hard work, and a simple concept. Jan and Zuzi envisioned creating a stronger relationship between locals and tourists by bringing an authentic Czech dining experience to small groups of visitors. Under Taste of Prague’s guidance, groups of no more than ten people visit six different restaurants over a period of four hours. Guests sit down at each stop with their Taste of Prague guides and listen to personal stories about Prague’s food and history (and of course eat and drink as well). “We like to keep the tour groups small because it’s more authentic this way,” Jan says. “This way we don’t take over the places we’re visiting.” Jan feels it’s imperative the group doesn’t disturb the culture of the restaurant the tour is visiting. Although Prague and great food are not (yet)
synonymous in tourism circles, Jan and Zuzi have proof that this is due to a lack of knowledge, not an empty culinary landscape. “The places we choose for the tours have to be the very best,” Jan says. “They have to both tell a story and be meaningful.” The second piece of their perfect food tour is to create memorable friendships. “I think a strong part of what we do is never underestimate the guest’s intelligence.” Some sightseeing tours might talk down to tourists, but Jan and Zuzi are equal opportunity eaters. “We don’t judge, and I won’t teach you how to eat your meal,” Jan promises. “If you don’t want the knife, don’t use the knife. It’s all spontaneous, come as you are, it’s all good.” Even with their huge following, Jan and Zuzi still keep up with old guests by taking the time to reply to emails for hours everyday Being active members in the Prague community helps to hold them accountable to the third element of their tours, honesty. “We have a big following among the locals so we can’t just make stuff up,” Jan said. “They’d have it out for us.” And though the founders are incredibly knowledgeable, they’re anything but food snobs. Jan even admitted that he has a total weakness for fried cheese. That’s honesty we can all get behind. Since 2011, Taste of Prague has given their personal tours to over 24,000 people, and they show no sign of slowing down any time soon. In fact, they’ve recently brought on additional staff so they can offer more frequent tours. Of course, leaving a guest in new hands can be difficult when you have such as specific brand and vibe. So how did they choose their additions to their tight-knit family? Carefully, Jan says. “Our key criteria was whether we would like to spend four hours with the applicants. We only asked
two questions. The first was to describe their last great food experience. If they can’t remember, they aren’t passionate enough about food. The other question is about their guilty pleasure. Their answer shows how open they are to other people.” Opening up the team was a particularly personal decision, because the food tour’s founding pair are also a couple in real life. Jan (then a professional translator) and Zuzi (then a lawyer) started dating in 2010 after meeting online, “That’s how busy people meet,” Jan jokes. So Taste of Prague isn’t just a job for them; it’s become a family business. In addition to the tours, Taste of Prague has built a bit of a mini multi-media empire. Their blog is incredibly popular among locals and visitors alike, offering tips on their favorite places to get cocktails, ice cream, coffee, and more. Then of course there’s their popular Instagram and Facebook pages. Their expertise also extends from the online to the analog world, with roughly twenty-five places in town selling their Prague foodie map, a curated printed guide to the best places to eat. The establishments gracing these coveted pages are selected just as carefully as the restaurants on the tour. In fact, Jan and Zuzi frequently turn businesses away unless they truly believe there’s something special about them. Taste of Prague offers tour goers a win-win scenario. Tourists leave with their minds and bodies full of memorable stories and delicious food, while Jan and Zuzi leave every tour feeling like they’ve made a difference in Prague’s tour scene. So is this tour right for you and your crew? Jan has one simple question that drives the answer home. “You didn’t come to Prague to lose weight, did you?”

Oh Deer Bakery Bělehradká 62, Vinohrady +420 736 608 195 www.ohdeerbakery.cz In the US, people call them cronuts. Locally, they're known as a crobliha. Combining a filled donut with a croissant, we think it's the perfect pastry, and Oh Deer has the corner on the market. Our best recommendation for Oh Deer Bakery? It isn't a flavour, its a time. Get there early. The small bakery only cranks out a few hundred croblihas per day. But, if we had to recommend a flavor, we would go for the caramel crème with nutella.
Bad Jeff's Barbeque Americká 78/32, Vinohrady +420 774 402 235 www.badjeffs.cz Our resident Texan is a self-proclaimed barbeque expert, and he says Bad Jeff's is better than pretty much anything he's found stateside. Our recommendation? The ribs of course - as well as the jalepeno cornbread.

Casa De Carli is just steps from Spanish Synagogue in Staré Město. International Chef Matteo De Carli is serving up amazing fresh, authentic Italian cuisine from regions all over Italy. Of course, what would a good Italian restaurant be without a great wine selection?
Located in the trendy Karlin area, this cozy little restaurant serves up a variety of one of Canada's best dishes - poutine (french fries and cheese curds topped with a light brown gravy). Complete hangover cure.
Asian Temple Bílkova 13 Staré Město +420 222 311 659 www.asiantemple.cz
The tepenyaki show at Asian Temple has become an office favourite. But we also love Asian Temple for its dark, sultry, chic lounge area and delicious cocktails. The large open space has plenty of cozy corners to enjoy a nice intimate date night, or big tables to entertain larger groups. The menu is vast with thai, chinese, indian, indonesian, japanese influences - but don't let that scare you - the chefs execute them all with delicious precision.
Como Restaurant Václavské náměstí 45 Nové Město +420 222 247 240 www.comorestaurant.cz The interior of Como is beautiful (it's in the historic Jalta Hotel), but we think perhaps the best view is from their street terrace thats sits on Wenceslas Square, where we could sit with a Coffeetini and people watch all day long. 14

La Republica Na Poříčí 1041/12, Nové Město +420 602 202 631 www.larepublica.cz Of the thousands of Czech restaurants in Prague, there's only a few that we recommend, and La Repubilca makes the list. The menu focuses on traditional Czech cuisine - Bohemian ham, grilled pork knee, roast duck, cabbage soup with sausage, steamed dumplings and others. La Repubilca focuses on great recipes and ingredients, including home-smoked meats from the renowned Brouček family butcher’s from Velký Šál in the Podkrkonoší region. And of course what would a traditional Czech meal be without the right accompanyment of a nice pint of Pilsner Urquell?
Lemon Leaf Myslíkova 260/14, Nové Město +420 224 919 056 www.lemon.cz Open for over 14 years now, Lemon Leaf has established themselves as a Prague favorite for their Thai and Continental cuisine. Ingredients are always fresh, the service is always good, and the bar puts out some great cocktails. There's lots of favourites, but we love pretty much anything spicy, so we can recommend the Koong Thot Almond - prawns wrapped in diced almond with a chilli and garlic sauce.
Jo's cocktail & diner Malostranské náměstí 7 Mala Strana +420 257 531 422 www. josbar.cz It's a virtual landmine of tourist traps when it comes to finding somewhere good to eat near the castle. Jo's Cocktail & Diner is one of the good guys. With a great food and cocktail menu, our staff always goes straight for the build your own burger option. THE CRAFT Náměstí Míru 1221/4, Vinohrady +420 727 895 310 www.thecraft.cz Casual, trendy, and cool. Locally sourced meat, six taps of everchanging craft beer, and a chilled out cool atmosphere make this a go-to if you're near Náměstí Míru. The menu is a creative collection of salads, wings and burgers, including the monster - The Double Craft, a whopping 300 gram buger with bacon, cheddar, carmelized onion, bbq sauce, and mustard mayo.
BRIXTON BALLS Korunní 783/23 Vinohrady +420 776 602 306 www.brixtonballs.cz We found Brixton Balls the first week they opened over a year ago, and we've been hooked since. The small meatball shop is popular amongst locals and expats, and often sells out if you get there too late. Owners Ludek and Tim have worked hard and expanded the menu over the past few months, from the original salad or rice option to include meatball subs, meatball pizza and vegetarian balls. Our advice? Go for the sub.
choco loves coffee Jugoslávská 27 Vinohrady +420 224 284 325 www.chocolovescoffee.cz Choco Loves Coffee, and we love them both. The Vinohrady store is a cozy, caffeinated den of temptation, pairing a great selection of coffees with a giant selection of handmade chocolates. There’s something at Choco Loves Coffee year round . During the summer we love to dig in to a nice gelato or iced coffee, and in the winter, the hot chocolate. And a selection from the giant array of handcrafted chocolates? Perfect anytime.

Marina Alšovo nábřeží, Staré Město +420 605 454 020 www.marinaristorante.cz It seems like every time we go to Marina, we're posting to Instagram (the picture at right was taken on their deck). The floating restaurant presents diners with a stunning view of the castle along with a contemporary and upscale atmosphere. The menu is broad assortment of Italian cuisine, ranging from pizza (currently served on the deck only) to all of your favorite Italian classics. For the money, Marina is showstopper, especially on date night.
Piknik Park Nosticova 8 (Kampa Island) Malá Strana +420 601 164 711 www.piknikpark.cz The recently opened Piknik Park is right up there on the romance meter, with it's scenic Kampa Island location right on the banks of Čertovka. A great destination just off Charles Bridge. Chef Gian Piero Maschio prepares all the Italian dishes with quality and fresh ingredients and the wine list has been curated by Víno Hruška. The end result is a perfectly paired match of menu and surroundings.
Špejle Jindříšská 16 Prague, Czech Republic 11100 +420 606 773 553 www.spejle.eu This trendy and clever bistro near Wenceslas Square lets diners choose a la carte items straight from the kitchen. K The Two Brothers Petrská 1136/12 Nové Město +420 601 576 222 www.indian-restaurant-prague.com K The Two Brothers has grown almost as famous as some of its dinner guests. With local and international celebrities frequently gracing its door like Karol Gott and John Malkovich, you'll never know who you'll find there. Owner Sumit Nandwani describes the influence of the opulant inteior as being influenced by what Kapurthala ,a European holiday retreat could have looked like. As far as the menu, many visitors describe the dining experience as the best indian they've ever had.
GRan Fierro Voršilská 138/14 Nové Město +420 773 700 377 www. granfierro.cz Argentina is known for their meat, which gives Gran Fierro a bit of street cred. Add the fact Zdenek Pohlreich just shot an episode of his new show Zdeněk's Academy there, and you shouldn't need any more convincing. Gran Fierro offers up beautiful steaks served in a smart trendy restaurant and at affordable prices. But it's not just about the steaks. The other dishes on the menu are just as special. And, in case you needed any more convincing, we'll leave you with one word... empanadas.
Summa Cum Laude Belgická 335/26, Vinohrady +420 211 155 129 www.summacumlaude.cz Summa Cum Laude serves up contemporary food from morning until night in a casual laid back atmosphere. The menu is affordable with a nice selection. And while Chef Alberto puts together some amazing lunch and dinner creations we would certainly ecommend - the real story for us is breakfast. Fluffy pancakes or waffles topped with a nice portion of American style bacon or perhaps the perfect eggs benedict is what stole our hearts at Summa Cum Laude, although we'll admit we're there at least once or twice a week more for a burger or salad.

CELEBRITY CHEF
Zdenek Pohlreich
THE CHEF NEXT DOOR BY MOLLY EMMETT
“So often it’s boring. Heavy. Absolutely no creativity.” By the way he speaks, one might think Zdeněk Pohlreich doesn’t like classic Czech food. Ironic, since the celebrity master chef counts the famous Czech landmark Café Imperial as one of the three restaurants for which he is responsible. But the reality is, Pohlreich just abhors anything poor quality or status quo (and isn’t afraid to say it), a trait which has made him one of the most famous names in Czech gastronomy in and out of the kitchen. In addition to being at the helm of Café Imperial and the Michelin award-winning Italian inspired Divinis, Pohlreich recently opened Next Door by Imperial (and you can probably guess its location and proximity to its sister restaurant by the name). Then there’s the numerous cookbooks, endorsements and of course, many appearances on television shows. Most notably, Pohlreich has been the face of Ano, Šéfe!, a Czech reality show similar to Gordon Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares. Pohlreich’s story begins in Czechoslovakia, where he grew up surrounded by the same types of food. Everywhere. Under the normalized political system, prices, quality and even creativity were standardized, so there wasn’t a variety of cuisines
available. Rather, Pohlreich recalls “there were 10 percent of the restaurants available today. And success was guaranteed, because there were no choices, and no arguments.” To him, Czech food was boring because “the recipe book was government ruled.” This was the reality of Czechoslovak “gastronomy” (though he hesitates to call it that). In the 1980s, Pohlreich’s desire to explore the world outside of then-Czechoslovakia eventually led him to Australia. There, things changed. Suddenly, there wasn’t the same monotony of standardized dishes; but it was harder to find a job, too. The master chef we know today spent his first weeks in Adelaide, Australia going door to door in search of an open position in whatever kitchen would take him. Finally, he found a gig at a French bistro called “La Guillotine,” a name which he joked is fitting because for the first time, his work was challenged. He remembers being surprised to hear, “this is not good enough, do it again” – something he had never heard in a Czechoslavakian kitchen. Already in his 30s, Pohlreich learned a new and important lesson about quality that has become one of his signature culinary priorities. Returning to Prague, Pohlreich’s experience with Western cuisine and standards fit well into in upscale hotel restaurants like Renaissance, Villa Voyta, Radisson SAS and Marriott. In 2007, Pohlreich says he left the “safe” corporate hotel world to be the executive chef at the newly reopened Hotel
and Café Imperial. Around the same time, his strong connections in “the small village of Prague” suggested he lead a reality TV show all about raising standards. Ano, Šéfe! (Yes, Boss!), has Pohlreich travel to restaurants all around the Czech Republic and help restaurateurs improve their establishments. Pohlreich noted that, although the TV work was unexpected, it works for him. “There are no rules, you just comment on the situation,” he explains, and “I’m not having problems being...brutally honest.” He describes the Czech standard as problematic, but improving, reminding us that “in 1989, there were no veggies, and you were lucky if the toilets were clean.” He has seen great improvements in the last 30 years, but fans of Ano, Šéfe! know he won’t hold his tongue when it comes to critiquing each restaurant’s food, decor and personnel. Pohlreich doesn’t mind his reputation, though, and at the end of the day, he knows “it’s just TV, it’s not your life.” This realization developed in the face of over-intrusive media exposure which has, at times, been the downside of TV notoriety. However, Pohlreich says he got used to the added pressure. He maintains that “it was good it happened to me at the age of 50, because then you have some wisdom...I was always thinking about my TV career...as something what started, and can finish overnight.” Indeed, while he continues to record several TV programs, Pohlreich’s primary focus and passion

He has designed the restaurant as a place where he would want to eat, and as a place where he would want to spend time. And indeed, he still does. Describing his typical day, the celebrity chef – and husband, and father, and friend – says, “I wake up early, about 6 a.m., whether it’s Monday or weekend...In the morning I run through my email, I go out with the dogs, make coffee for my wife… And I enjoy coming to the restaurant and talking to people.” Though he is not usually involved in the food production, he explains that “cooking is still one of the most comfortable things I find in my life.” American chef and TV star Anthony Bourdain has a chapter (in Kitchen Confidential) where he describes his life – how lost he is in the outside world, yet how comfortable he feels when he is cooking just a piece of meat, because he can relate to it, no problems.” Pohlreich shares this sentiment. When Next Door by Imperial opened last year, Pohlreich was in the kitchen for six hours a day. He fondly remembers “the hiss of the dishwasher, the clatter of the pans and all that. That’s my environment... TV is just something I’m visiting. [Cooking] is, I think, in my blood.”
The beautiful dining room at Pohlreich's latest restaurant, Next Door by Imperial.
is still the cooking itself. Last year, the owner of Imperial Hotel offered Pohlreich the chance to design and open a restaurant in the space across from Café Imperial. Pohlreich let his dream come to life inside the walls of Next Door by Imperial, which he calls “the most beautiful of our restaurants.” Next Door consists of a series of three adjoining rooms, each with slightly different feel. There are high ceilings and earth tones, and the first two rooms have a calm atmosphere. By contrast, the third room is a bright, bustling space with tables around the edges and booth seating in the middle. Lit from above by a glass ceiling, one side of the room contains three open “windows” which directly connect the customers to the kitchen. There you can see the kitchen staff as they prepare a menu based on old Austro-Hungarian and Central European standards with a modern twist. Pohlreich’s aim for the cuisine, as with the place, is to be “light, visual, and modern.” Though the quality is high, his intention was “not fine dining, but more of a Parisian bistro level.” He is very satisfied with the result of their work on this restaurant, and believes it is the “first hotel restaurant where people forget they’re in the hotel.” At Next Door by Imperial, customers will find that the menu reflects Pohlreich’s culinary values of simplicity and consistency. They produce traditional Czech and Central European dishes like duck, schnitzel, and “svíčková” (beef tenderloin), as well as internationally-inspired choices such as Chilean sea bass and croque-monsieur. For Pohlreich, “the future of Czech gastronomy will be the ability to accept other countries’ standards, not just, ‘this is Czech, the rule, forever.” In his opinion, strictly Czech food “at the moment is not good enough – we need to be international.” Rather than the traditional “filling, heavy portions” he grew up eating and preparing, the chef prefers something “light and well-cooked.” And for
Pohlreich, the ingredients have to be good, but not always local. “Nobody wants to eat carp,” he states. “Number one, we want it to be good, then local. Freshness is important, and consistency is the key.” That, and simplicity. While Pohlreich is optimistic about the direction in which Czech gastronomy is headed, he warns that the modernization shouldn’t get out of hand. There are times “when you read the ingredients list and get to the end, and you forget what you read at the beginning. A lot of young chefs are getting lost in their own games, and that’s not for me anymore. I’m quite happy I did it the way I did it.” Judging from the menu and atmosphere at Next Door by Imperial, it seems Pohlreich has found his sweet spot between high standards and simplicity.
Pohlreich says even though shows like Ano, Šéfe! have made him a celebrity, he still finds comfort in the kitchen, saying “cooking is still one of the most comfortable things I find in my life.”

Tram and Metro Map
Public Transport Tips:
First let people off, before you get on. If someone elderly gets on, give up your seat. It’s not just curtious, it’s expected here. To fit in on the metro and trams wear your headphones. If you don’t have headphones, then play with your phone instead, or read a book or this magazine. If you’ve been drinking, don’t act like an idiot, even with friends.
Late Night: After midnight, trams switch to “Night Service”, which includes a whole new schedule that can be a bit confusing - especially if you’ve had a few drinks. Our recommendation - call an Uber or Liftago or use a taxi to get to your destination.

THE PRAGUE VISITOR | september 2017
COCKTAIL GUIDE The best cocktail bars in Prague( (like the ones listed here) get pretty busy, even during the week. It's always good to make a reservation just to make sure you get a seat (even at the bar).
Tretter's
V kolkovne 3, Praha 1
www.tretters.cz
The Tretter family has been in the bar business for more than 90 years. So it’s no wonder this place feels like walking into a 1930’s Paris or New York cocktail bar. With soft lighting, classic decor and bartenders dressed the part in vintage cocktail jackets, the bar has become an institution. Number 82 on the map. +420 224 811 165 for Reservations
Parlour Krakovská 15, Praha 1 www.parlour.cz Maybe Parlour doesn’t want to be found – and that’s fine with us. The tiny little bar at the top of Wenceslas Square near the National Museum has a delightful speakeasy vibe to it, though it’s quickly becoming a popular secret. If you should luck out and discover the nearly unmarked entry, inside you’ll find an intimate, dimly lit bar with old jazz and R&B records playing and amazing craft cocktails served in antique glassware. Number 84 on the map. +420 777 200 015 for Reservations. L'Fleur V Kolkovně 920/5, 1, Praha www.lfleur.cz L’Fleur is just a few doors down from Tretter’s. Even before our first drink, we fell in love with 1920’s feel of the interior, complete with a Muchainspired stained glass window towards the back of the bar. The signature drinks all come with their own history, which your bartender is always happy to explain. If you’re feeling a bit more bubbly, try a selection from L’Fleur’s expansive champagne list. Number 94 on the map. +420 734 255 665 for Reservations
Anonymous Bar Michalská 12, Praha 1 www.anonymousbar.cz It’s nearly impossible to go into the AnonymouS Bar and not smile. The bar is clever at every turn. You can tell the bartender your likes and they’ll make suggestions, or choose from the secret drink menu printed in UV ink and read with a small blacklight. Reservations are taken only until 9pm. Number 93 on the map. +420 608 280 069 for Reservations. Le Valmont
Uhelný trh 414/9, Praha 1
www.levalmont.cz Le Valmont is a newcomer, just opened in Spring 2016. The Michael Van Cleef Ault concept was inspired by the Milos Forman movie of the same name, and is decorated in 18th-century French fashion with aubusson carpets, antique sofas, and massive crystal chandeliers. Just take note of the strict dress code at Le Valmont—no hats, hoodies, shorts, tank tops or sandals. Reservations are all but required, since the 100-capacity lounge fills up fairly quickly. Number 90 on the map. +420 224 267 266 for Reservations.
Black Angel's Staroměstské nám. 29, Praha 1 www.blackangels.cz Nestled in a cozy cellar just across from the Old Town astronomical clock, Black Angel’s will put you in sensory overload. With high cellar ceilings, chandeliers, and ornate decor, it’s a lot to take in. +420 224 213 807 for Reservations. Bar and Books
Manesova 64, Praha 2
and Týnská 19, Praha 1 Bar & Books is the first overseas extension of the famous New York family of bars, with two locations in Prague (the more casual in Manisova and slightly more formal in Týnská). The bar evokes the feeling of a gentleman’s library. Dim lighting, heavy woods, ornately framed paintings,
and of course books (though mostly for visual aesthetics). Number 85 and 86 on the map.
Bonvivant's CTC P1
Bartolomějská 305,
Bonvivant's CTC isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and has a cool 1950’s feel with mid-century wood furnishings, a pressed tin ceiling and a checkered floor. Bartenders are a virtual encyclopedia of drink possibilities and suggestions based on your tastes. Incidentally, the “CTC” in the bar’s title actually stands for cocktail tapas café, and it hits the mark on each one, serving some pretty damn tasty dishes and coffee as well. +420 775 331 862 for Reservations.
Bugsy's
Pařížská 1068/10, Praha 1 www.bugsysbar.cz Bugsy’s is another bar with a great history, popping up just after the Velvet Revolution. Their one constant has been their attention to detail and passion for good cocktails. Bugsy’s also loves their bubbly, and boasts over 130 brands in stock, as well as over 90 single malt whiskeys and 100 types of rum. Number 95 on the map. +420 224 810 287 For Reservations.
Hemingway's
Karolíny Světlé 26, Praha 1 www.hemingwaybar.cz Chances are, if you’ve asked around, you’ve already been recommended to Hemingway’s Bar. The Old Town hotspot just made the “World’s Top 50 Bars” for the third time, and with good reason. The bar’s philosophy is that every customer must have a seat, so you won’t feel overcrowded here. So reservations are recommended. Number 97 on the map. +420 773 974 764 for Reservations.
Cash Only Bar Liliova 3, Prague 1 www.cashonlybar.cz Just around the corner from its older sibling Hemingway’s, this little gem is making its own
name with cocktails like Pin-Up Martini, made with passion fruit, vanilla and champagne. It’s an intimate bar, and they don’t take reservations. There’s also no smoking and, you guessed it—the bar doesn’t take credit cards. Oh, and by the way, they do serve amazing hot dogs. Number 89 on the map. No Reservations.
Oblaca Žižkov Television Tower, Praha 3
www.oblaca.cz
High atop the Žižkov Television Tower, Oblaca is making better cocktails through science. Oblaca’s Aleš J. Števlík, genius mixologist gone mad scientist (maybe that explains the drink served in a test tube). Števlík deploys molecular mixology in his cocktail designs, exploring the physical and chemical transformations of ingredients that occur when making a cocktail. 92 on the map. + 420 210 320 086 for Reservations.
La Bodeguita del Medio Kaprova 19/5, Praha 1
www.labodeguitadelmedio.cz With it's colonial-style interior straight from Old Havana, La Bodeguita is on point. In addition to great food, bar staff have perfected their craft with regional drinks, from the Cuba Libre to the Mojito. There's a live Cuban band several nights of the week and an amazing cigar selection as well (La Bodeguita was one of the first cigar bars in Prague). . Number 97 on the map. +420 224 813 922 for Reservations.
Alchemist Bar Provaznická 1, Praha 1
www.thealchemistbar.cz A relative newcomer on the scene, Achemist is turning out quality prohibition style drinks in their ornate classicly decorated location at the bottom of Wenclases Square. Number 98 on the map. +420 251 510 940 for Reservations.
CLUB GUIDE Roxy Dlouhá 33, Prague 1
The Roxy is one of Prague’s oldest and bestknown clubs. The venue was a popular theatre and ballroom in the 1920’s, but now you’ll find drum and bass, house, techno, and other modern styles on the dancefloor. When the club isn’t hosting a live DJ, it’s the spot for concerts and music festivals.
Lucerna
Vodičkova 36
One of the largest and most popular music clubs in Prague, Lucerna is known for its weekly concerts and events. But it’s maybe most popular on Friday and Saturday nights, when the club’s huge projection screens come alive with 80’s and 90’s music videos. Partygoers of every age and all walks of life can be seen here, getting down to oldie hits from Blondie to Nirvana. Number 66 on the map.
Cross Club
Plynární 23, Prague 7 www.crossclub.cz
Cross Club is a labyrinth of small bars and dancefloors pumping music from dubstep and techno to reggae. The club’s psychedelic, industrial décor is a sight to see in itself—every piece of the building, from the walls to the ceiling, is constructed to move and pulsate with the music. It’s one of the most unique experiences you’ll have with nightlife in Praha, but you might want to grab an Uber. Cross Club is a bit out of the city’s center, but worth the trek. Number 67 on the map.
Meet Factory
Ke Sklárně 3213/15 www.meetfactory.cz
This music club, art gallery, theater and cinema is the brainchild of David Černý, the artist responsible for some of Prague’s most famous (and controversial) modern art. A refurbished warehouse stuffed between a motorway and railroad tracks in Smíchov, Meet Factory transforms
by night into a hip bar and music venue, where you’ll find local singers and international tours alike. Number 68 on the map.
M1 Lounge Masná 1, Prague 1 www.m1lounge.com
M1 Lounge is a favorite of locals, expats and even passing-through celebrities, and it’s not hard to see why. The club’s well-known team of skilled DJs keep the place pumping with a mixture of R&B, hip-hop, electro and dance music until the wee hours of morning, and the upscale, luxurious atmosphere makes every night feel like a celebration. Number 69 on the map.
James Dean V kolkovně 922/1 www.jamesdean.cz/
Okay, we admit that this one’s kind of kitschy— but only in the best way. Named for the iconic rebel and actor, the bar has a classic 1950’s American diner feel turned nightclub late night. Number 70 on the map.
NEONE
Bubenská 1 www.lunchmeat.cz/
Neone got its start as a pop-up party, but it’s since grown into a well-established and respected club in Prague’s electronic music scene known for their superior sound system and live gigs. Electronic music fans, this is the spot where the latest trends in the industry meet innovative artists and dedicated fans. Number 72 on the map.
Radost FX radostfx.cz
Bělehradská 120, Prague 2
First opened in the early ‘90s just a few years after the Velvet Revolution, Radost FX is open Thursday to Saturday and offers the best of house, R&B and hip hop music—Rihanna even
filmed one of her music videos there. Above the club is the venue’s restaurant and cafe, wellknown as one of the best brunch spots in all of Prague. Number 73 on the map.
Retro
Francouzská 75/4, Prague 2 www.retropraha.cz
One for the curious bored or brave. Retro has become the Czech home of hard house. Their club nights are full to the rafters until the small hours while go-go dancers whip the energetic clubbers into a house driven frenzy. A very friendly atmosphere with smiling faces and sweating brows as far as the eye can see, there are more locals and fewer tourists here than some of the other large clubs with amazing DJ’s, lasers, and vibes. Dress code is free and easy, flamboyant if you’re feeling daring. Number 75 on the map.
Chapeau Rouge
Jakubska 2, Old Town www.chapeaurouge.cz
Chapeau Rouge is a music clubs that ranks among the biggest in Prague with 3 floors, 4 bars & 3 stages. Chapeau truly has something for everyone! You may even stumble upon it all on your own: it’s in the center right behind Old Town Square The ground floor of Chapeau is a chill place to meet people from all over the world: travelers and expats alike. Number 77 on the map.
U Sudů
Vodičkova 10, Prague 1 www.usudu.cz
U Sudu is the best of both worlds with a wine bar upstairs and an underground, cave-like labyrinth downstairs. When you walk in, don’t stop on the top level. All that is up here is a normal looking bar. Keep walking until you hit the stairs that descend into one of the coolest
places to drink on Earth... It is indeed smoky, but get past that and the place is just mythic. Number 78 on the map.
Harley's
Dlouhá 18, 110 00 , Prague 1
Harleys is described as the coolest hell on earth. This American-style biker bar opens late and is always rockin’ and rollin’ with live DJs and music acts. It’s also in a perfect location, just a twominute walk from Old Town Square. Number 79 on the map.
La Loca
Odborů 278/4, Prague 2
Chic, fashionable and a whole lotta fun! One of the very first smoke-free establishments in Prague entertains the crowds all day every day. The night is the time when true party colours of La Loca show. International vibes mixed with a scrumptious selection of sizzling drinks are a guarantee of a big night-out. Add a carefully selected music program - karaoke, 80s & 90s retro parties, DJ performances, live concerts and rooftop gatherings in the summer - and you can rest assured knowing you'll very likely to create memories to remember for a lifetime.
Café 80's 8)
You can't go wrong with 80's music. Whether you're nostaligic or just appreciative of all things "totally awesome", the two-story venue does features an 80's themed café restaurant on the first floor. But, the real story here is the basement. A nicely sized music club with an illuminated dance floor, plus a large bar and VIP lounge make it a night worthy of the MTV generation. Number 80 on the map.

Exhibitions This month
Lithuanian Film Posters The City of Prague Museum Na Poříčí 52
The exhibition presents the most interesting film posters of Lithuania from the collection of the Lithuanian Theater, Music and Film Museum in Vilnius. Visitors will see 43 posters from the period between 1953 and 2010 designed by the prominent Lithuanian affichists – mostly the graduates of the Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts from after the 1960s. Regardless of the period censorship, the posters show a specific artistic expression, allegorical importance, which remarkably expands the understanding of the films. Exhibit is opened through Thursday, August 21.
Vladimír Boudník
The City of Prague Museum Na Poříčí 52
Presentation of the work of an outstanding Czech graphic artist and painter, a representative of active and structural graphic art, and a ‘Gentle Barbarian’ whose life and work was closely associated with the Libeň and Vysočany quarters of Prague. The works have been lent by Jan Placák’s private collection. Exhibit is opened through Sunday, October 29.
First Scream, First Cry The City of Prague Museum Na Poříčí 52
The exhibition brings focus to the history of attendance at birth from the individual care to the foundation of medical delivery institutions in Prague. The greatest accent is put on the period between the 2nd half of the 18th and the 1st half of the 19th centuries because it was a period of cardinal changes in the attitude for providing help to women while giving birth. The exhibition presents a manifold evidence of the midwife and obstetrics professions, from medical instruments and various tools to the traditions of birth giving, legal documents, and some written records. Exhibit is open through Sunday, October 15.
Burial Mound of Libeň The City of Prague Museum Na Poříčí 52
In 1890, a grave with a skeleton in an extended position was found in Libeň, in the garden in front of the synagogue on today’s Zenklova Street. In addition to a ceramic jug, there were two extraordinarily long bronze pins – measuring 77 cm – on the skeleton’s chest. Based on these findings, the grave originated in the Middle Bronze Age, in particular in the period of the Middle Danube Tumulus Culture (1550–1300 BC). Exhibit is open through Sunday, October 1.
Prague of Charles IV – A Grandiose Building Site in Europe House at the Golden Týnská 630/6
The first stage of the exhibition at the House at the Golden Ring was launched as part of the celebrations of the 700th birth anniversary of Charles IV. Focusing on urban development in Prague and its changes throughout the 14th century, the display accentuates the rule of Charles IV and the House of Luxembourg.
From a Thread to a Shirt / Medieval Textile Production and Dyeing in Prague House at the Golden Týnská 630/6
Textile and its products were important parts of the everyday life of medieval Prague. The exhibition introduces medieval textile and dyeing crafts during the 14th and 15th centuries. Visitors can find various types of textiles, their practical use for everyday life, and the historic fashion of the inhabitants of the New Town of Prague in the High Middle Ages. A unique collection of a few hundred medieval textile fragments discovered during archaeological research of the dump layers in the centre of Prague is the core of the exhibition. Exhibit is open through Sunday, October 29.
Vanished Podskalí and Life on the Vltava Podskalí Custom House at Výtoň
Rašínovo nábřeží 412 The Podskalí Customs House at Výtoň is the last reminder of old Podskalí. In this Renaissance building with a 16th century timber storey, a toll called ‘výtoň’ (referring to the cut logs from rafts) was collected on timber that was floated to Prague. The life of Podskalí raftsmen, timber traders, sand miners, ice diggers, and others whose life was connected with water is presented through historical photographs and tools used by the Podskalí locals. The next part of the exhibition is dedicated to the history of raft and ship transportation near Prague – visitors will again find historical photographs presented with the help of modern technology. Furthermore, the exhibition shows models of ships and a raft. The exhibition has been designed to also attract children.
Villa Müller, National Cultural Monument Nad Hradním vodojemem 14/642
A world-famous structure of the avant-garde architect Adolf Loos (1870–1933)
Villa Rothmayer, National Cultural Monument U Páté baterie 50, Prague 6
The villa was owned by the architect Otto Rothmayer (1892–1966), a follower and colleague of Josip Plečnik (1872–1957).
Norbertov Study and Documentation Centre

Object of the Quarter of a Year: Locksmith Guild Funeral Shield Ctěnice Chateau Bohdanečská 259/1
Locksmithing is one of the oldest crafts. Originally, locksmiths were blacksmiths who later specialised in subtler and technically more demanding metalwork. In the 14th century, there were so many of them in Prague that they found their own guild. They also included in their guild similar crafts such as gunsmiths, spur makers, and clockmakers. Funeral shields were raised above the coffin during a cortege and there was always an even number of them. The locksmith’s guild had four shields from 1611, each of them showing specific signs of the particular group of artisans: locksmiths, spur makers, gunsmiths, and clockmakers. The locksmith’s burial shield features crossed keys, two locks, and names of guild members encircling the shield, all bullion-embroidered.

The Tower Mystery Charles Bridge
On the occasion of the celebrations of Charles IV’s birth anniversary, the City of Prague Museum opened a permanent exhibition in the Old Town Bridge Tower. Since the tower was a part of Charles Bridge and the two structures were founded at the same time, the foundation stone of the bridge might be hidden in the pier located below the tower. The tower’s construction was completed along with the bridge in the early 15th century. For its architectural and artistic aspects, the tower ranks among the greatest highlights of High Gothic structures of Charles IV, not only in Prague but also in (Central) Europe. The tower is distinguished by many authentic details (e.g. mason’s marks), artistic decoration, and its urban appearance. The permanent exhibition presents unquestionable facts as well as various hypotheses, which arouse the visitors’ interest although they cannot be verified. A small presentation of objects retrieved from the Vltava, including the latest findings of the unique riverbed research focused on the riverbed mapping, is installed in the tower’s underground.

Custos Turris / City Warden
Town Belfry by St Nicholas Church Malostranské Nám. 556/29
The City of Prague Museum prepared a comprehensive permanent exhibition about the arduous life of tower wardens, the history of the structure, the development of the town watchtower service, and the belfry’s misuse during the totalitarian regime. Visitors can take a look into the tower warden’s flat of the second half of the 18th century, which includes a smoke kitchen – the only publicly accessible one in Prague. This part continues with a signalling room – where the tower warden did his job. The interior of this room corresponds to the first half of the 19th century. The second flat of the tower warden dates to 1891 when the signalling function was cancelled and the warden looked after the clock. The exhibition also presents the Baroque sewage system, and visitors may admire the bell chamber with a bell chair and St Nicholas Bell of 1576. The tower also includes the unique ‘Kajka’ – an observation post of the State Security on the very top of the belfry, which was used until 1990.

"I have worked in the field of books my whole life, at first in a publishing house and then as a bookseller. For example, I was a manager of a bookstore in the Na Příkopech street. It was one of the reasons why the events of 1989 were so intense for me. I remember that already in January, during the so-called ‚Palach Week’, police was chasing young people around and they were running past our shop window. There were iron bars which we used to close down at such moments. Once a young student ran by, grabbed the bars for a moment and asked: 'Do you happen to have a self-defence manual by any chance?‘ I still remember that. As it is common, young people were the leading force of the change. It felt nice to see their courage. I observed it and held my fingers crossed for them. In the autumn, as the events of Albertov and Národní třída started to unfold, all kinds of people started coming to the store and used to say: 'It’s here, finally!‘ There were many gatherings in the Wenceslas Square at the beginning. I was impressed by what were the various speakers saying but also by the simple fact that the speeches were cheered and listened to by 50
people from various social groups. They stood there one next to another. Students, the so-called working elites but also blue-collar workers. Every time a bigger group was approaching the gathering, the organizers announced it. For instance: 'Workers of ČKD are coming to join us!‘ And people cheered and greeted the newcomers. We were experiencing strong feelings of solidarity. I could sense that the whole world of Socialism was shifting, that it was about to move towards democracy and freedom. Not everything worked out the way we wanted, obviously. I could sense the solidarity for a few years more and then it slowly faded. Everybody started to care about the business of their own and suddenly they didn’t have so much time for the others. But overall, I noticed how things became more relaxed – that my children had easier access to education or that many new books got to be published. Books that I’d known about but that had not been available around here. Some films and books were released after the Revolution for the first time in their complete edition – they used to be shortened during the Socialism. Because there was the 'Department

of Print Supervision‘ that banned many things. And these were not only the 'anti-regime pieces’. I saw how once ‚Schoolboy Kája Mařík’, the innocent children novel, was printed, when somebody suddenly decided that it couldn’t be sold publicly. And so it all went to a dump site, the entire huge press run. They drove it to the Bubeneč train station, tore out its book covers and dumped paper on a pile. Crazy things were happening. I know that there are other problems now, that the political development after the Revolution dissapointed many people, but I don’t think that we live badly now. It’s good to know that at the beginning of the 1990s, there were still Soviet troops here. A huge number of soldiers that were basically eating the country up. I didn’t experience any ‚turning points‘ in my private life but the year of 1989 was a great turning point for all of us. The development made me happy in a way that I was able to tell myself that I could live out my second half of life in freedom. In democracy. It sounds like a cliché but when you remember that it used to be the other way, you find out that the words have their profound meaning.“
