A Nice Ring to It
When the greenlight was given to return to community gatherings last fall, students immediately circled one date on the calendar: the annual 12 Days Celebration in the Johnson Athletic Center. We invite you to do the same – join us in the JAC on 12/22 for this year’s celebration. Watch for more details on prairieschool.com/upcoming-alumni-events.

From the Head of School
Dear Prairie Community,
As the fall flies by it seems like a good time to pause and look back on the past school year. 21-22 was awesome: our second full year of successfully operating with every student on campus all day, every day, dating back to August 10th of 2020.
The steady resilience and determination of our faculty and students has helped our community avoid so many of the challenges with academic preparedness and health that schools across the country are now trying to manage. This fall and going forward, the preparedness and maturity of incoming students will require extra attention, but on the whole our faculty and students continue to grow and excel in a way that our alumni would find familiar and of which we should all be incredibly proud.
This fall, the Leipold Johnson Early Childhood Center (LJC) opened with four Early School classrooms for the first time in Prairie’s history, with the Brave Explorers joining the Creative Captains, Shining Stars, and Wise Owls. The newly constituted 6th through 8th grade Middle School is showing tremendous continuity, smaller class sizes, increased collaboration, and focus for our pre-teens. The new 5th grade program, led by master educators Joy Aragones and Tristan Pearson ’99, is off to a great start, and in early October we opened the Leipold Recital Hall as the new home for our ever-growing choral program under the direction of Fletcher Paulsen.
Prairie’s commitment to steady growth and improvement, even through the pandemic, continues to drive us and has led to the advances above – and an all-time high of 76% parent participation in the Prairie Fund, a 2.5% increase in enrollment this fall, and another year of successful college placement, with the fifty-nine members of the Class of 2022 earning more than $13.4 million in merit scholarships.
For our 2,440 alumni, the year ended with a ‘palooza of activities – with hundreds returning to campus to connect with each other and retired faculty, to honor Kevin Will and Tracy Waters, to see the new building, and to join us at Prairie Premiere, an event that supports more than half our students: those who receive need-based scholarships to attend Prairie.
As we move through our 59th year, our future looks bright and I hope you will all join me in thanking our 911 donors who supported us in 21-22 and jump on board with your own philanthropic support to keep Prairie affordable and exceptional while building on our momentum! Thank you all for making Prairie, Prairie.
Sincerely,
Nathaniel

Leadership
“Prairie is a place where we pride ourselves on helping our students grow and develop, and our teachers take that a step further by committing to their own learning, modeling that dedication for each child who passes through their classroom.”
Dear Friends:
I feel incredibly fortunate to be writing to you after another terrific year for Prairie. Belonging to this community is meaningful for all of us, and each of you reading is an important part not only of our school’s history, but of its future.
Prairie is a place where we pride ourselves on helping our students grow and develop, and our teachers take that a step further by committing to their own learning, modeling that dedication for each child who passes through their classrooms. As I see every day in our faculty, there is a culture and a passion for always trying to evolve and develop, to try a new approach, to be the best we can be for our children. This translates to the environment we’ve created on campus for students: a place where they can try, experiment, fail, and pick themselves back up to do it all over again. This is why you see seniors going out for the Upper School musical for the first time, and the same reason 5th graders feel empowered to climb a rock wall at Camp Timber-lee when they’ve never done it before. The support our students feel from their parents, teachers, and peers is what helps Prairie live its mission to: “Prepare our graduates for college and life with the desire and skills to make the world a better place.”
What makes this community so extraordinary is our support of one another as we continuously strive to be better — to be the best for our children. None of that would be possible without your support and your philanthropy, and I thank you for your commitment to our mission.
Sincerely,
Helen Johnson Leipold ’74 Chair, The Prairie School Board of Trustees

THE YOUTH MOVEMENT
— Brendan J. O’Brien
Nelson Mandela once said, ‘The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow.’ And while this is true, sometimes they’re also the leaders of today.
Last winter, led by the pair of freshman phenoms JJ Barnes ’25 (left) and Meg Decker ’25 (right), the girls’ varsity basketball team finished 24-3 while recording a perfect 16-0 record in the Metro Classic Conference.
The fiery passion of Decker, a 2nd Team All-MCC selection, and the inevitability of Barnes – few players in the state can create off the dribble as well as she can – fueled the Hawks during their historic season. While the team ultimately fell short to Racine Lutheran in a WIAA Division 4 Sectional Semifinal, the Hawks will not only return Barnes and Decker, but regular starters Reese Jaramillo ’24, Ava Collier-White ’24 (center), and Sophia Lawler ’23 as well.
One year later: a team that is wiser, more experienced, and even hungrier.
If the leaders of today have anything to say about it, this season might just have a slightly different ending.
The Prairie Fund
The Prairie Fund is our most critical fundraising endeavor, as it supports every facet of school life. Our entire community is grateful to the donors who contributed to the Prairie Fund in the 2021-2022 year.

UP IN LIGHTS
“The state tournament of high school performing arts,” is how Prairie’s Head of School Nat Coffman describes the Jerry Awards. To put it another way, they’re a really big deal. And in what has become a common occurrence at Prairie – just like state tournament appearances and championship performances – Prairie’s Performing Arts Department once again earned some serious recognition for their rousing rendition of this spring’s musical, Chicago
Under the leadership of Theatre Director Dena Roncone, this year’s cast and crew brought home an incredible seven Jerry Awards for “Outstanding” work in the following categories: Orchestra (Outstanding Overall Production), Isabella Gustitus ’22 (Lead), Emma DeGroot ’22 (Spirit), Fletcher Paulsen and Jamie Breiwick (Musical Direction), Hope Riesterer (Choreography), Aaron Christianson (Scenic Design), and Katlin Grelach (Costume Design). Congratulations, artists. Keep bringing home that hardware.

Auntie Lulu
THE MAGIC OF LONGTIME PRAIRIE EDUCATOR MARY LOU MOELLER WAS NEVER MORE EVIDENT THAN DURING HER FAMOUS STORY TIME.
— By Trista Deuster ’16
There is nothing more wondrous to a child than a book that comes to life thanks to a captivating storyteller. Treasured stories are often among our earliest memories; told and retold, they grow along with us, but we never forget where they began.
As a Prairie lifer, I was lucky to personally know one of our school’s bestknown storytellers, Mary Lou Moeller. Mary Lou was a member of the Middle School faculty for seventeen years who, in her retirement, made regular appearances in the SRC to read to younger students. Affectionately known as “Auntie Lulu,” she served as a volunteer for decades after leaving the classroom – and I vividly remember sitting with my classmates, crisscross-applesauce, quietly waiting but bursting with excitement. Would she bring her big bag? Would a puppet be inside? What book would she choose for us this time? Suddenly, she would appear and we would all sit up straight with smiles from ear to ear: Auntie Lulu had arrived.
What I didn’t know as a Primary School student was the pivotal role of stories throughout Mary Lou’s life, whether she was advising the Prairie Focus or teaching in the classroom. She famously wrote dozens of original scripts that her students then performed, weaving pop culture references into traditional storylines. In a letter to the student cast of her play
Cinderella, Western Style, she wrote, “It is strange that in all the minutes in every day, certain events never leave your memory.” Mary Lou gifted each class, student, and colleague memories to last a lifetime – in the classroom and beyond.
In the mid-80’s, Mary Lou co-authored a song with fellow TPS faculty member Pat Badger – “Circlin’ in the Round” – about their beloved Prairie. Owners of the 1986 yearbook will remember that a vinyl record featuring the tune was placed in every copy. She kept writing well into retirement, even publishing a children’s book in 2010. More than the written word, however, Mary Lou made room for students to be themselves and share their own stories. “She was a sure and true 5th and 6th grade teacher. She was really a champion for anyone in her classroom,” says Pat.
Although Mary Lou eventually had to retire as the Primary School’s chief volunteer tale-teller and puppeteer, she continued to support Prairie’s students with her philanthropy. In her later years, Mary Lou was a champion of special projects throughout the school, and – with an eye to the future – she also created two endowed scholarship funds, one in honor of her husband Arne and the other bearing the Auntie Lulu name.

Mary Lou’s final charitable gift to TPS came after her passing in December of 2020, and in thanks for her generosity and commitment to the school over the years, her former classroom now bears her name.
A true champion of the Prairie mission and someone who gave her time, talent, and treasure to students like me, Mary Lou’s legacy and love for children will live on in the magical memories she helped us make. The tales we read and write share a common thread with the storyteller who opened the pages to countless new worlds, and I know I’ll never forget where they began.
Trista Deuster is a Class of 2016 alumna. This fall, she returned to Prairie in the role of Development Events Manager.

Not quite summer, yet not quite school: that’s the state of limbo that is the Camp Manito-Wish trip for the Upper School faculty. Luckily, it’s a week filled with chances to get to know each other – and their students – better. Oh, and ice cream. [A]
THE DOG DAYS
I have belonged to a dog training club for the past twelve years, affiliated with an organization called the Hunting Retriever Club (HRC). There are over 100 clubs in the country; mine is called WISILL HRC and I currently serve as treasurer. [B]
Through this organization we run our dogs in hunt tests at three different levels: Started, Seasoned, and Finished. Dogs that pass four finished tests earn the title of Champion Hunting Retriever.
This past summer, I spent three to four days per week and countless hours working with and training my 4-year-old dog, Willow. On Saturday, August 20th and Sunday, August 21st, Willow earned her Champion Hunting Retriever title by passing her final two tests! On that same weekend, I judged dogs at the Started level for the first time as well.

SUMMER BUZZER BEATER
Is submitting something that happened on September 16th appropriate for a “How I Spent My Summer Vacation” feature? No. Did the football played in Notre Dame Stadium on that day by the Fighting Irish strike fear into the hearts of their opponents? Umm, also no. Was watching the faces of my children – Sawyer ’32, Sullivan ’32, Declan ’34 – during their first-ever trip to South Bend, where they experienced the bookstore and the band and the Golden Dome, something I will remember forever? That, my friends, is a resounding ‘yes.’ [C]

ON THE ROAD AGAIN
For almost 4,000 miles, the Barretts traveled to the Rockies this summer!
Our first stop was North Dakota to explore Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Next, we drove to see family in Havre, Montana over the 4th before heading to Glacier National Park. [D]
From there, we went to Alberta to hike in Banff National Park and canoe on Lake Louise. We missed Kevin Costner opening the Calgary Stampede by a day, but downtown Calgary was alive with music, amazing food, and tons of cowboy hats.
Heading home we hit Little Bighorn, Mount Rushmore, and the notorious Wall Drug.
No bear or moose sightings, but hundreds of pictures and memories to last a lifetime.

PRAIRIE HAS A NEW – YET VERY FAMILIAR – HOME TO MAKE MUSIC.
— Brendan J. O’Brien
Think about the last time you moved. Remember what it was like unpacking the cardboard boxes and looking around, fists on your hips, as you proudly imagined all that might lie ahead. There’s an energy that exists in a new space. A new office or home or Early Childhood Education Center. A feeling of excitement. A palpable momentum that lives in the air.
Fletcher Paulsen, Vocal Music Teacher, felt it even before the first song was sung this fall.
Over the summer, Prairie’s Hilpert Room, long one of the most adaptable spaces on campus, underwent a transformation with one motivation in mind: the magic of music.
INTRODUCING PRAIRIE’S LEIPOLD FAMILY RECITAL HALL
Circular room with walls of that beautiful red brick. The space is familiar to anyone who has spent significant time on campus, and in the school’s earliest days it was used as the library. Eventually, it was dubbed the Hilpert Room, a place that proved quite diverse over the years, hosting everything from sleepover lock-in’s to State of the School addresses to Primary School plays.
Most recently, the Hilpert had been where the Early School ate lunch. During COVID, however, students stopped eating in close quarters in favor of their desks – the Hilpert was ripe for a reimagining. Cue the imagination of the maestro.
“I’ve always liked the space and kind of had my eye on it,” says Paulsen. “But it was home to Early School (ES) lunches and wasn’t an option. But after COVID, Early School was eating in their classrooms so I asked if we could be in there. They said ‘yes.’ ”
Paulsen and his students spent the 2021-22 school year enjoying the room, an opportunity that came knocking just time with the Upper School choir having enjoyed a renaissance in recent years, the group growing to nearly 50 students this past year.
However, as much as Paulsen and his students enjoyed using the Hilpert, and as much as they needed the space – they’d outgrown the music room they shared with band behind the Mitchell Theatre’s Brookwood Stage –they were never completely sure if they were there to stay.
Until this spring.
With ES firmly settled into their routine in the Leipold Johnson Early Childhood Center (LJC), and choir growing to the point of needing a new, permanent, home, the Hilpert was ready for its true calling.
“They came to me this spring and the plans were pretty much complete,” says Paulsen. “It was a fun surprise. There was a need for a lecture hall, a large gathering place, and this space can be used by College Counseling or for a State of the School presentation. However, it was also designed to be an exceptional choral classroom.”
Consider it the cherry on top of Prairie’s recent Bigger, Better, Together campaign, the fundraising initiative that led to the creation of the LJC. The opening of the new building freed up space once used by the Early School, space that was ready to become a school-wide resource.
“People wondered how the opening of a childcare center would impact high school students,” says Dr. Nat Coffman. “This is how. The opening of the Leipold Family Recital Hall – a place where our music program can continue to grow – is the full realization of the Bigger, Better, Together dream.”
Coffman credits the vision of Steve Joost, Prairie’s Assistant Head of School for Finance, for his efforts in leading the charge to enhance and update the space. And for Paulsen, the surprise became even more thrilling when Prairie’s Facilities and Leadership teams tapped into his knowledge on seating, acoustical engineers, and most exciting...lights.
“They let me pick the lighting,” he says, beaming. “I went with tri-acoustical baffles that have lights right on them. So the sound is great and they also look amazing.”
Indeed. The new Leipold Family Recital Hall is truly something to behold. The panels with the baffles. The huge honeycomb hanging at the heart of the room. And that energy: a collective and palpable eagerness and appreciation filling the space every time the students enter.
“We’re blown away,” says Pauslen. “It’s a more intimate space. All the features are incredibly cool. It’s great to have a place to call home.”
In addition to the seating and the layout, there’s one more thing Paulsen wants to remain permanent: the appreciation for a space that has meant a lot to Prairie’s story.
“I told the students what this room means,” he says. “And that the space they are inheriting needs to be the space they leave.”

SUNSHINE AND WILDFLOWERS
— Brendan J. O’Brien
The point of service, or at least one of them, is to put ourselves in the shoes of others: to broaden our worldview with the hope of making life on this planet a bit better, a bit brighter. Of course, there’s also something to be said about kindness for its own sake: going out of our way for no other reason than just to be nice can mean a lot.
At Prairie, students are taught to understand how these small acts might brighten a day or even start a conversation, all in the interest of fostering human connection. Last spring, eager to lift the moods of residents at Shorelight Memory Care at Racine’s Siena Center, English Teacher Becky Wheeler and some of her Upper School students took to the wildflower fields behind Prairie to pick these brilliant yellow daffodils – the flowers were practically glowing – before hand-delivering them a short time later.
Now that’s certainly one way to make a day a whole lot brighter.
The 25th Annual Golf Classic & Dinner
Prairie’s Golf Classic & Dinner is a long-standing tradition that, over the past twenty-five years, has raised over $1.6 million for the school’s scholarship program. Thanks to our dedicated volunteers and donors, the 2021 event netted over $135,000 in support of deserving students who would otherwise be unable to afford the full cost of tuition.

Daring To Be Brave
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SCHOOL HISTORY PRAIRIE HAS A FOURTH SECTION OF EARLY SCHOOL.
—
Callie Atanasoff, Director of External Relations
Their backpacks are bigger than their bodies, but they’re ready.
Ready to meet new friends, ready to find their spot on the A-B-C rug, ready to get their hands on paint and books and all the things you look forward to as a three or four-year-old.
This year, our Early School crew – the Creative Captains, Wise Owls, and Shining Stars – were joined by a fourth classroom. Enter the Brave Explorers.
The opening of this final room completes the Leipold Johnson Early Childhood Center (LJC), Prairie’s newest addition to campus. What began as a dream – a beautiful space that would be filled with color and light and creativity and music – became a reality in August of 2021, and it continues to breathe life into our school.
During the first week of school we sat down with Emily Henkel, Lead Teacher for the Brave Explorers, to talk a little bit about what this new adventure means to her personally and what she’s looking forward to in the year ahead.
a 4th section of early school for the first time in school history, and you get to be the person leading that section. What does that mean to you?
As cliché as it sounds, it means EVERYTHING to me!
Looking back eight years ago, I was a student teacher in Susan Holum’s 1st grade class and ecstatic to get my teaching career started. I was offered my first teaching job elsewhere, but unfortunately things didn’t go as planned and I left that job with shattered confidence. Shortly after, I found my way back to Prairie and a community that truly invested in me.
What is your biggest goal or hope for this school year?
My biggest goal for this school year is to inspire my students’ love for learning and that they leave the day happy. If they’re happy, then I’m happy, too.
What is the best thing about early school at prairie?
The vast opportunities and resources.
The Early School program is carefully crafted for a young child’s desire for learning with hands-on experiences that are engaging, mindful, and purposeful. The program not only prepares our youngest learners for kindergarten, but as lifelong learners equipped for the ever-evolving world.

Neil Patel ’82 served as Production Designer for HBO’s new series, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin.
“There are five principal actors in the show, which is a lot for a series,” Patel told awardsradar.com in an interview on 8/14. “So it was challenging to create individual and unique sets for so many characters that play repeatedly. In addition, the show is very stylized, so each set needed to be carefully crafted. Of course, these are all typical design challenges, but in this case, the enormity of the world we needed to create within the time frame was very challenging.”
Sandra Rogers ’82 was recently appointed to Northwestern Mutual’s Board of Trustees. Rogers has honed her expertise in global supply chain management and customer service over a three-plus decade career that has spanned the automotive, aerospace, and medical device industries. [C]
“Sandra’s expertise in the supply chain and customer service areas will bring an important perspective to Northwestern Mutual,” said Northwestern Mutual Chairman, President and CEO John E. Schlifske in a news release from the company. “We look forward to her meaningful contributions as Northwestern Mutual continues to enhance the seamless experience for policyowners with insurance and wealth management products.”
Peg (Renquist) Johnson ’87 was honored with a 2022 Outstanding Educator Award from the Massachusetts Coalition for Adult Education (MCAE). Johnson, who has worked at the Center for New Americans (CNA) for over 25 years, is renowned for her ability to conceive and implement curriculum. At CNA she has developed and instituted numerous classes, including Bridge to Healthcare, Bridge to College, and Bridge to Manufacturing
As stated in Network, an MCAE publication: “The Bridge to Healthcare class was particularly remarkable in that it was designed in partnership with Greenfield Community College and involved helping college colleagues appreciate the challenges of ESOL learners so that they could “ESOLize” their materials. It also involved helping community-based instructors appreciate the rigor of college level classes. This class informed the creation of the state-wide PHCAST curriculum which is used today, and laid the groundwork for CNA’s successful certified nurse aide training. Peg has fine-tuned the recruitment, screening, and orientation process for this successful program every year for five years to build on what we learned.”

Andrea Bukacek ’03 was named a 2022 Woman of Influence in the field of Family Business by the Milwaukee Business Journal. Bukacek recently became CEO and owner of the Racinearea construction company that was originally founded by her father. “[Becoming owner] meant a lot to me personally having grown up watching my dad build and grow the company,” she told the MBJ. “But I also wanted to take the company to new places. I wanted to grow the company.”

Luiz Felipe Ramos ’17 (stage name, Ipe Ramos) has released his latest single “White Lies.” A little background on the song’s origination: “When Felipe was a senior, I connected him with a producer in Milwaukee who had worked with Anderson .Paak, BJ the Chicago Kid, Ishdarr, and others,” says Jamie Breiwick, TPS Instrumental Music Teacher. “This song is a result of those sessions with that producer, Thane. For the music heads, you’ll notice a subtle Brazilian underscoring throughout the track, which is very cool as Felipe and fam are from Brazil!” [B]

“F”is for… Field Trips
Thank you to everyone who responded to our “Name That Road Trip” feature in the last issue; you remembered locations, faces, even student behavior! Since Prairie field trips make quite the impression, we decided to share a few of our favorites from this fall.
THE RETURN OF TRADITION
The pandemic impacted life at Prairie in a lot of different ways, but one of the more notable was felt when, for two straight years, the annual Upper School trip to Camp Manito-Wish was cancelled.
That ship – or should we say canoe – was righted this fall when students in grades 10 – 12 headed off for four days of adventure, reflection, challenge, and discovery. Freshmen, who were unable to attend due to low staffing at Manito-wish, had the chance to do their own team-building back on campus.
CAMP TIMBER-GLEE
Similar to the class-wide Camp Manito-Wish retreat in the Upper School, the Timber-lee getaway for 5th and 6th grade is not only a long bus ride away, it’s an outdoor adventure carefully crafted with chances for classmates to build trust and be brave.
Or to put it another way, it’s a day intended to help students come out of their shells.
F’S AT SCHOOL ARE USUALLY BAD…EXCEPT WHEN IT MEANS GOING TO THE BEACH OR PLAYING WITH REPTILES.
36 | prairieschool.com
SUN, SAND, & SERVICE
Here at Prairie you need not go far to find both breathtaking beauty and the opportunity for impact. Such is life when schooling within a stone’s throw of Lake Michigan. In August, Becky Wheeler, Upper School English Teacher and Wilderness Club Advisor, took her club across the street for some beach beautification.
“This was our first Wilderness Club activity of the year,” said Wheeler. “We picked up trash during block flex. Recent heavy rains and big waves led to Styrofoam, plastic bottles, beverage cans, and other debris being tossed up among the rocks.”
KICKING IT OLD SCHOOL
Believe it or not, there was a time when 3rd graders didn’t spend recess practicing TikTok dances. Take 1888 for instance: when 9-year-olds went to school and encountered coal-burning stoves, blackboards, wash basins, and old math.
Prairie’s 3rd grade students learned all about how kids like them learned some one hundred and thirty years ago during their field trip to the 1888 Bohemian Schoolhouse in Racine.

THE CONCERT CHOIR’S PERFORMANCE AT COMMENCEMENT 2022 PROVIDED AN INDELIBLE REMINDER OF HOW THE PRAIRIE MODEL IS DESIGNED TO WORK.

CELEBRATING THE
OF 2021 38 | prairieschool.com
CLASS
My father has always appreciated a good choir. While not exactly blessed with the voice of an angel (I’m being kind here), he nonetheless appreciates the magic that can happen through the harmony of voices. “They were in fine feather,” he likes to say after a performance that has moved him.
The concert choir at Commencement last June was in fine feather. Smiling, for this was a celebration, a day dreamt about for so long by so many, they held nothing back as their voices carried through the JAC. Furthermore, the mashup was masterful. Songs from Hamilton, High School Musical 2, and Taylor Swift, were selected by the senior choir members, and all intricately woven together by Vocal Music Teacher Fletcher Paulsen to deliver a trio of powerful messages: we have worked hard, the future is ours, and we have paved a path for you to follow.
This was a day that, at times, felt forever away for the seniors who two years ago were taking math in their living rooms and chemistry in their kitchens. So, a celebration was in order. Not just because these seniors had made it to their high school finale, but because they’d done so here at Prairie, a place that has no qualms about challenging its students and preparing them to succeed in life after Wind Point.
One way TPS does this is through modeled behavior. Examples are important and Prairie is a place where leadership greases the school’s gears of success. Student Government, the Buddy Program, service hours, Advisory: all of these are pivotal in instilling a strong work ethic and a keen understanding of how healthy relationships can bolster morale. And, more often than not, the Upper School, in particular the seniors, are the ones asked to serve as the penultimate example.
This was no different on the Friday before Memorial Day, the JAC filled with family, friends, and classmates, everyone watching as the seniors – both the choir members and those who just wanted to sing on this special day – left the front of the ceremony in favor of the bleachers at the building’s west end where the underclassmen in the choir waited.
It was impossible to miss the symbolism. The seniors, each resplendent in navy gown and dangling tassel, occupied the first few rows, while, up above, the underclassmen looked down, dreaming about the day they would be front and center. When the piano started playing, the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors all came together to provide a soft, subtle backdrop, singing “oooooh” until the moment the seniors began.
“Together, together, together everyone. Together, together, come on let’s have some fun.”
Thanks for the memories, Class of 2022. And for the example you set. It’s been fun.
If we lay a strong enough foundation, we’ll pass it on to you, we’ll give the world to you.
- “ Dear Theodosia,” Hamilton
Graduating from Prairie’s Upper School isn’t easy: it’s four years of commitment and hard work, and those efforts culminate in a grand celebration of friends and family at Commencement. This year was particularly meaningful for the Shimps, as evident in the smiles of Kiran ’22 and her mom, Shakila ’87. Kiran is off to Indiana University this fall and Shakila serves on Prairie’s Board of Trustees. PURSUING EDUCATION ON CAMPUS AND IN THE WIDER WORLD
JAMIE BREIWICK, Instrumental Music Teacher, released a new album, Season Two: Full Bloom, with KASE, the jazz/hip-hop group of which he is a member. Breiwick also recently appeared as a guest on the popular podcast The Third Story with Leo Sidran. The episode will air in October. [A]
As one of six participants in the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) Fellowship for Aspiring
School Heads Institute, JOHN FRENCH, Upper School
Dean of Students, will attend the 2023 NAIS Conference to present on a topic facing independent schools today.
“Our topic is grading in independent schools (grade inflation, traditional vs. standard grading, consistency in grading, etc.),” says French. “I will be shadowing a couple Heads of School in November, as well as doing a mock interview with a board chair.”
The flagship event for the Fellowship was held this past summer in Atlanta. The faculty was comprised of nine Heads of School from around the country, who led five days full of sessions on a variety of topics related to school management, leadership, and development.
In September, JEAN WEAVER, Upper School Science Teacher and Department Coach, attended a workshop called “Science and Shipwrecks” at the University of WisconsinMilwaukee’s School of Freshwater Sciences. The workshop focused on the ecology and water quality status of the Great Lakes, Lake Michigan in particular. [C]
Weaver also published her first “Data Point” for HHMI Biointeractive in July. HHMI Biointeractive is renowned for creating materials that bring cutting-edge research to high school and college students in meaningful, engaging ways. Data Points uses interesting figures from the literature to create a classroom activity that helps students improve their abilities to read, interpret, and question.
HOLLY
WOLF-MATTICK, Fine Arts Teacher and Glassblowing Studio Manager, and BILL REID ’73, Artist-in-Residence, were two of the featured artists at this year’s SAVOUR fundraiser hosted by the Racine Art Museum on September 23rd. According to the event’s website, the popular evening offers “inventive pairings of local artists and chefs guaranteed to delight.”
FLETCHER PAULSEN,
Vocal Music Teacher and Performing Arts Department Coach, was recently inducted into the DeWitt High School Hall of Fame. The honor was particularly meaningful to Paulsen – a 2011 graduate of DeWitt – as he joined his grandmother, Joyce Fletcher, as a DeWitt Hall of Famer. [B]
“My primary thought was how excited I was to have another shared experience with my grandma,” Fletcher told the DeWitt Observer. “That was something that was a constant growing up. I witnessed my grandma’s induction, and I am flattered and humbled to be in the same group as her and so many others.”
Central DeWitt High School is located in DeWitt, IA.

A TO THE POINT
Dr. Weaver Discusses the Writing of her first Data Point
Writing these is fun but also challenging. In this case, I had to learn about lactase persistence in order to have a clue what the actual journal article was saying. Then I had to boil this down A LOT to get it to a high school level. That was a big challenge.
The fun part was thinking up the questions to ask the students – but this was easy because lactase persistence is so interesting! Humans are an anomaly among mammals in the fact that we are the only mammal that retains the ability to drink milk past infancy – but, only some of us can drink milk as adults (that’s due to the continued presence of lactase, an enzyme). Why that is is somewhat of a mystery, but some believe the gene was selected for in pastoral populations, the thinking being that those who herded cattle, sheep, and horses presumably drank their milk, which would have been a huge advantage in times of famine.

AFTER A TEN-YEAR TOUR OF THE MIDWEST, TRISTAN PEARSON ’99 AND FAMILY DECIDE THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE PRAIRIE.
— By Brendan J. O’Brien, Director of Communication
The apple doesn’t fall from the tree. Or in this instance of Prairie academia, the educator doesn’t fall far from the institution.
Tristan Pearson ’99 came of age surrounded by the curved hallways and grassy plains of Prairie in the nineties. As the son of two beloved TPS educators, he spent his youth receiving a crash course not only in the things that make this place special, but the attributes that made his parents, Chris and Kevin, so skilled as teachers.
It was an influence that led him back to Wind Point not once, but twice.
Following his graduation from St. Olaf University in Minnesota, Pearson returned to Prairie in 2005 to teach Middle and Upper School English while also becoming co-workers with his mom and dad. After three years, he was promoted to Middle School Dean. His Prairie star, as they say, was rising.
In 2013, however, Pearson and his family relocated to Rochester, MN so his wife, Amy – a gifted practitioner in the medical field – could train at the Mayo Clinic. Eventually, the Pearsons settled in Iowa City, IA, and while visits to Racine were common, it wasn’t the same as being home.
TAKING HIS TALENTS TO TPS
In 2010, Lebron James famously announced he was taking his talents to South Beach. And while many a sports fan found the announcement both pompous and unnecessary, it’s the kind of thing Pearson, a habitual shunner of praise, a man of great calm and greater faith, probably found particularly cringe-worthy.
“I am not one for the spotlight,” said Pearson, when approached regarding this story. “So doing a small spread would be appreciated.”
Unfortunately, not much about Pearson can be considered small. Not the reputation that preceded him, nor the excitement that ran through the faculty when news of his return started to spread, and certainly not the impact he’s had on the 5th grade students he’s teaching.
Like his parents before him, Pearson is an educator who skillfully, carefully endears himself to his students, his style rooted in a place of kind, thoughtful instruction.
Roots: that’s what this story is all about, really. About the easygoing teacher who has again returned to his own roots, excited for his kids, Sora ’26 and Astrid ’28, to experience the upbringing that factored so prominently in his own life.
44 | prairieschool.com
I caught up with Prairie’s newest 5th grade teacher earlier this fall to ask about his Prairie re-entry and what he’s looking forward to most this year.
It’s great to have you back, Tristan. Hopefully this spread is small enough.
give us the cliffs notes version of What the pearson clan has been up to since you last taught at prairie, and What led to your return
My family and I moved to Minnesota in 2013 for my wife’s medical training at the Mayo Clinic. In 2017, we relocated to Iowa City, IA, after she finished her training. We felt the time was right in 2022 to return to Wisconsin to be near our families and to send our kids to Prairie.
What’s been the highlight of your first month back?
Prairie has amazing faculty and staff, and it has been a joy to work with many new (to me) faces. Of course, reconnecting with previous colleagues has been a treat, too! I also really enjoyed taking the 5th graders to Camp Timber-lee and River Bend this month because outdoor education creates different learning opportunities.
What’s one thing about prairie you didn’t realize you missed until you returned?
I certainly missed the people of Prairie through my years away; however, I hadn’t realized how much I enjoyed Prairie’s buildings and how they contribute to the tone and spirit of the school. From the meditative quiet of the SRC to the bustling courts of the JAC, the campus mirrors everyone’s energy and creativity. Even the curving hallways create spontaneous moments of interaction since you never know who’s coming around the bend.
What’s one of your hopes for this year’s 5th grade class?
I hope this year’s 5th grade class continues to grow its leadership skills now that the grade is part of the Primary School. They’ll have several opportunities to practice and contribute throughout the year.
tell us something else – not related to prairie – that you noticed or experienced in conjunction With your move back home
Racine is still familiar to us, too, so it has been fun to rediscover former favorite restaurants, as well as try new places. Though Minnesota’s ten thousand lakes and Iowa’s cornfields are nice, there’s nothing quite as special as Lake Michigan.
THERE WERE A WHOLE LOT OF REASONS TO SMILE THE FIRST WEEKEND OF JUNE.
At least that’s the conclusion one must draw when looking back at pictures from Alumni Weekend 2022, and that’s the feeling that was prevalent for everyone who participated in a whirlwind two-day stretch which included Kevin Will’s retirement celebration, an Alumni & Faculty Brunch, a Peace Pole dedication for Tracy Waters, Prairie Premiere 2022, and several decade gatherings.
(Whew. Just writing it out is tiring!)
Nevertheless, joy most certainly did abound, and as you can see from these images – pictures filled with love and laughter, appreciation and friendship – the photo opps were indeed plentiful.

The Last Word
Leading By Example
The collective selflessness of Prairie’s faculty is a blueprint for all.
— Callie Atanasoff, Director of External Relations
Philanthropy: giving one’s own resources to better the lives of others, often embraced as a contribution of “time, talent, and treasure.” A culture of giving, of philanthropy, has long been established at Prairie. The seeds were sown with Gene Johnson, and today the heirlooms of those first plantings are thriving, alive in the hopes and dreams of our students.
What keeps that cycle flourishing is our faculty. They are committed to our mission, and find ways everyday to give of their own resources to support what we do as a school, as evidenced by the examples below.
TIME
Video production. Rubik’s Cubes. Student cheers on game days. What do they all have in common? Matt Friedman, Upper School Math Teacher.
Matt began his career at Prairie in 2021 and hasn’t let off the gas since. He voluntarily stepped in last school year to handle video for Prairie’s annual State of the School event, and it revealed a plethora of other skills and passions. Matt now runs the Rubik’s Cube Club in Middle School and is the faculty advisor for the TPS Student Section Instagram: social media dedicated to ensuring our Hawks show up loud and proud for athletic events.
TALENT
Venture across campus and you’ll find Kelsey Cassidy: 1st grade teacher by day, yoga instructor extraordinaire in her free time. Whether showing young yogis how to master a tree pose in Prairie’s Mini Masters series for prospective families, leading an after-school yoga program for Primary School students, or helping faculty and parents learn how to release mind-body tension amidst their busy schedules, her willingness to use her talents to support our community is impossible to miss.
TREASURE
When COVID-19 kept us from hosting indoor events, we looked for ways to bring Prairie families together safely.
Enter the Pumpkin Walk, a colorful display of over 150 jack-o’-lanterns and painted masterpieces lining the sidewalks of campus. To ensure every student had the opportunity to participate, Shay Borzynski ’00, Prairie’s Director of Admission, and her husband, Mike ’99, gifted crates of pumpkins, turning the parking lot into a pop-up pumpkin shop.
These are just a few snapshots of faculty philanthropy here at Prairie – but we won’t stop there.
For the last nine years, every full-time TPS employee has made a financial gift to the Prairie Fund – the ultimate demonstration of faith in the mission, belief in our students, and support of one another. Essential to making the student experience more engaging, impactful, and connective, the Prairie Fund turns curricular dreams into action plans. It shows up as theater costumes and sheet music and LEGO™ robots. It partners teenagers with textiles in Design Technology class and finds 1st grade kids excited about dissecting sharks.
Our faculty understand the importance of giving back, and it has made all the difference in our community as a whole. The ripple effect of their confidence is reflected by the parents who partner with us, whether as a volunteer at Fall Fest or as a donor to a new scholarship or building. The rings even extend to thoughtful grandparents who contribute to the Birthday Book Club to honor a love of reading, and to graduates who help pull together a spirited Alumni Weekend.
To be part of Prairie is to share in something bigger. And we all have something to contribute – time, talent or treasure – to make this community stronger.
From curriculum enhancements to field trips to team uniforms, the Prairie Fund is the school’s main fundraising initiative. To make your gift, or for more information on how this vital component of Prairie philanthropy impacts the community, visit www.prairieschool.com/give.
