THE SERIES

WELCOME 2021 WRITTEN ROSIE BASQUIN Welcome, 2021! Bring forth a new perspective in this year, a wind of new hope and courage. It’s the beginning of a new cycle; a chance to close out the old and negative cycles and bring new growth and lessons. In 2020, many lessons were learned, and it definitely showed us to expect the unexpected. In 2021, claim this as your year of victory! You made it through a turbulent year. Through the new normal and rituals we’ve had to get used to, you can take everything you have learned and spark something even better moving forward this year. Set forth your intentions and go after your goals. Don’t hold back or stifle yourself for others, but let your light shine by being authentically and unapologetically who you are in every way. The key this year is to remain focused and consistent in your growth and healing. Every day may not feel the best, and it is okay to take a break and rest. Listen to your body and what it needs. Connect with yourself on a deeper level this year; be attentive to your mind, body, and soul. Mental health is important, and the path to growth and healing isn’t one straight shot. Often, you will reopen those old wounds and have to cry or release that pain, and that is okay. You may have to mourn the loss of a family member or adapt to a new normal. It is okay to rest, but be sure to release. Sit with your emotions and analyze them. Those wounds have shaped you into who you are and are the catalysts that will form you to be even stronger and lead you into your destiny. Surrender to the tides of the journey instead of trying to fight the current. You made it through 2020; you will surely conquer 2021.

With this new mindset and perspective for the new year, you will attract abundance and growth into your life. You will attract everything that is meant for you and all the tools necessary to get to where you are going. Don’t give up! Your future self will thank you for your resilience, power, and strength and for never backing down and going forth, sowing the seeds you had all along. We are always growing and changing. We are always evolving. The beauty of life and its journey is to experience that growth. When you look back and see how far you have come and how much you have overcome, you will be in awe. For whatever 2021 brings, you will be ready for it: new beginnings, new intentions, and new goals. The energy you vibrate into the world will be returned tenfold if you just keep believing in yourself and your dreams. Now is not the time to hold back. The world is waiting to see what YOU are made of! Happy New Year! Many blessings to come.

5 TIPS TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS IN 2021 New Year. New Goals. New Drive! by LR Wilson

You can do your best work when you are in a good space, mentally, emotionally, and physically.

E

very year we sing the same song! Well, Sis...we are singing it again! New Year. New Goals. New Drive! The year 2020 threw some of us curveballs, but we still hit them out of the park. You know why? Because we kept our eyes on the prize and nothing stopped us from claiming what is ours! In 2021, we will go from "overlooked to overbooked!" Get ready to slay those 2021 goals with a vengeance.

Personally, I stopped making New Year's resolutions because, quite frankly, I don't plan on taking a whole year to get to my destiny. Sis, it's time! Your time has come! In order to get a few things under our belts early, I have come up with a list of five tips to help you get started on the right path to accomplish your goals: Schedule time for work and self separately. It's imperative that the two are separate. You can do your best work when you are in a good space, mentally, emotionally, and physically.

Connect with a business tribe that empowers and uplifts (hint: Pretty Women Hustle Network). You must find your business tribe. In that tribe, you should receive constructive criticism, insight, encouragement, and services that you need to build your brand and grow your business. Most importantly, you want a group of like-minded individuals to be there to make you laugh on the days you feel like crying.

Make time to enjoy life. Please enjoy your life! All work and no play will make you tired, Sis! Enjoy the fruits of your labor. Spend time with family and friends, and make memories that will allow you to flourish. Grind like your life depends on your success because it does! Your success will be just as much as you put into it. Give it your all and understand that the work you are doing will be a generational blessing. Allow YOUR BRAND to represent you. YOUR BRAND is YOUR BIRTH! Every part of it represents YOU! Make it GREAT!

SIS...YOU ARE NOW EQUIPPED TO BE OVERBOOKED!

I stumbled upon this company by accident. I was in a Facebook group looking for vendors for an upcoming pop-up shop when I came across “The Big Black Bag.” Have you seen it? It’s a bag full of necessary, Black-owned products. My niece ordered the box, and it came with Coral Oral toothbrushes, Browndages...YES! Brown band-aids. Nature Boy Black Soap and Ujamaa light bulbs, among other things! You have to check it out at Webuyblack.com.

Talk about inspiration. This story is sure to warm your entrepreneurial spirits. We can all relate to being told countless times to turn the lights out as a child or being asked, “Why are there a million lights on in my house?” Rob Jackson, the creative visionary behind Ujamaa lighting, is no exception. Armed with an IT background, he seized an opportunity to provide lowincome communities with energy-efficient light bulbs.

UJAMAA

According to their website , “the word “Ujamaa” is Swahili in origin. The term centers around the notion of “extended family,” and it focuses on the concept of self-reliance and the practice of uplifting one’s community via family and cooperative economic achievement.” This concept is amazing, and I am thrilled that this product is on the market, for us, by us. PRESSED BY BEAR When I say FIRE, I mean FIY-YI-YI-YI-YAH! I will never look at press on nails the same. Each set is custom made to order. Like many of us who find ourselves on YouTube at 3 a.m. learning a new skill, Bear decided it was time to combine her love of art with her desire to make herself and other women beautiful on a budget. Boss moves! Not everyone can afford to go to the shop. Bear’s custom nails are for those clients. She’s been in their shoes and feels women shouldn’t feel ashamed or suffer because of it.

Bear (Kiere Thomas), the mother of 4 boys, definitely has her hands full, and unfortunately, not a nail model among them. Regardless, she finds it a blessing to be able to work from home, especially during this pandemic. Giving a shout out to her city, Bear says Columbus, Ohio has given her so much love and support, it has been made possible that, even after the pandemic subsides, she can continue to work from home, doing what she loves, raising her children alongside her supportive husband.

Over the years, it has developed into what her customers and clients know as “Pure.” Back then, it was just for personal use and didn’t have a formal name. It wasn’t long into the winter months that J.S. realized that her daughter’s skin was drying out and cracking. “Pure” would only partially work, and that just wasn’t good enough. Back to the lab, J.S. went. When she emerged, she did so with “Skin’s Friend.” What an adorable name! As you can see from her website, it was a trying journey to get to where they are as a company.

Check out the details on these custom sets, guys! Shop Pressed by Bear by visiting: https://www.Pressedbybear.com

You can shop for Body Love’s natural oatmeal and shea butter soaps, coconut green tea salt scrubs, turmeric-charcoal soap, a coconut oil blended body spray, men’s beard oil, and more!

BODY LOVE ALL

More than half the ingredients used in these products are right from J.S.’s garden! Tea leaves, roses, lavender, hibiscus, aloe, and coming soon, stevia for teas.

NATURAL SKINCARE Everyone has a story and a why for starting their business. For J.S. Williams, it was quite personal as a mother. Body love is the result of one mother’s love, determination, and creativity in wanting to alleviate her daughter’s eczema when she was just a toddler. Unfortunately, skin creams were out of the question, including the ones prescribed by her doctor. They made her condition worse. Can you imagine the agony and confusion in a small child? J.S. began researching all natural ways to help. She could no longer sit by and do nothing. It started with a simple mixture of butters with different textures and attributes. She then added in the essential oils.

“Body Love is truly a work of love,” and we are so here for it. You have to try the tea. It comes with the tea leaves and individual bags so you can make your own tea bags!!!! Each bag has at least five uses in it. It has an earthy aroma and a soothing silky taste. Tell them L. Renee’ sent you! Shop Body Love by visiting: https://www.allnaturalbodylove.com/

STEWART BEAUTY & BARBER BOUTIQUE Last, but certainly not least, is my own Boutique hair salon and trademarked virgin hair line, Stewart Magic ™ Hair. We only obtain raw virgin Remy hair directly cut from ponytails, so all of the cuticles face the same direction. This way, the hair won’t turn into a rat’s nest after you wash it. If you have bought low-quality hair before, then you know what I mean. YIKES! We seal all hair wefts with glue, so when you are running a brush through your hair, it does not leave the floor looking like someone just shaved your head. It keeps the wefts thin to make the hair easier to weave and lay flat. This experience, this journey is dedicated to the two individuals who made me who I am today – my grandparents, Herman and Madge Stewart. Their grooming habits live on, and at Stewart Boutique, we want you to experience our magical transformations and natural processes as well.

Our boutique prides itself on being a premier experience with quality, exceptional service, and most importantly, hair magic! We are certified medical wig providers, and cancer and alopecia patients have a special place in our hearts. We also sell 3D and 5D Mink Eyelashes, Bundles/Frontals/Closures on hand, and online Swag Bags that make great gifts. PRETTY WOMEN HUSTLE SPOTLIGHT

Kelli Boone

Kelli Boone is a 43-year-old divorced mother of five amazing children. She was born in Columbia, SC, and raised in Edgewood, Maryland, where she lived most of her life. She attended Coppin State University but did not finish. She got married and was a stay-at-home mom for 13 years. As her life progressed, she found her place in the medical field as a CNA. Currently, Kelly provides referral services for seniors and serves as her mother’s sole caregiver as she lives with dementia. 1.) What inspired you to start your own business? Fearless came about after my oldest daughter, Phenyx, was bullied in school by other girls about her ethnic looks and her dreadlocks. My daughter was bullied for over a year before she was suspended for threatening the girl’s lives because she couldn’t take it anymore. The girls were reprimanded, but my daughter was scared by the bullying, and I was left to rebuild her confidence and self-esteem.

I prayed and asked God how I could bring bullies and the bullied together to break that cycle and actually bring the two together to make a more positive union with young girls. God gave me the scripture Psalms 139. “For we are fearfully and wonderfully made in HIS image!” Every girl should know how beautiful and wonderful they really are individually and still have enough humility to encourage and support the next girl. We were created fearfully, so we walk fearlessly, breaking down the stereotypes of what society says is beautiful. 2.)Aside from running your business and spending time with your family, what are your hobbies? I LOVE TO SING! I love networking and meeting new people. I love being a KEKE (grandma) to my two grandsons, Judah and Koda! I love to cook and host dinner parties as well.

3.) What has been your most satisfying moment in business? The night of our first show. To see my ladies walk with confidence down the runway like they OWNED it was amazing!! During their first run, I became overwhelmed and yelled out loud behind the scene, “YOU BETTA WALK FEARLESS!” My face was full of tears. I was so proud!!! 4.) How do you define success? Success is following your dreams, and watching them be manifested right before your face. It is being fulfilled by accomplishing the passion of your heart’s desire and seeing the benefits of what you sowed into! It is helping girls walk fearlessly, one girl at a time.

FIND YOUR HAPPINESS AGAIN BY PATRICE RIVERS

PHOTO BY CAIO CARDENAS FROM PEXELS

Where did you leave it? Is it stuffed in the back of your closet where you left your red pumps? Or did you leave it in the abusive relationship you just got out of? Or did it go down the drain in the dumps? Where was the last time you saw your happiness hug you so close to your heart that it gave you that dose of inspiration? Is it buried deep within your soul along with the other bad vibes and complications? You must find it sooner than later so that you can get back to your life where opportunities are knocking at your door Because if you do not find it now, your heart will shut down, your body will feel detached from your soul, your happiness is what you need, and so much more Don’t allow the problems of your heart and this world get you down, sis, because you were born into this world for a purpose So, shake those bad vibes and start taking back your happiness because you do not want your old habits to come back and surface You have a divine purpose that is truly worth it When you have found your happiness again Then new things in your life can begin The days will look a little brighter And your baggage will feel a little lighter You need to find your happiness again And do not lose it again, or you will have your heart broken, and it must be mended again So, watch over your happiness and guard it with your heart And capture it on a canvas like a poet’s art.

It Was The Devil All Along In this life, we never think about why we are here at the time we are born. I have found that God handpicks some of us before birth to serve him. Avalon Brown is one such person God has chosen. People have doubted and challenged her throughout her life, and her goal has been to prove them wrong. In this personable memoir, Avalon shares the times she struggled, and the times she succeeded. One day she realized, she should take in the messages she heard at church and start leaning on God and his power to overcome the devil. Working as a nurse for many years, Avalon climbed the management ladder, proving her capability to those who criticized her. Often her struggles seemed unfair, but what Avalon has come to realize is that these trials have only made her stronger. The problem was neither her nor her peers. It Was The Devil All Along

ABOUT THE AUTHOR My name is Avalon Brown, and I grew up in Newark, New Jersey. Although I have been a registered nurse for the past 39 years, I am also the author of six books - a memoir, a novel, and four children’s books. I have two children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. My goal with my children’s books is to write a book for each grandchild, with each of them being the main character for their individual story. This will be my legacy to them. In the near future, I plan to write a book of spiritual poems. In my spare time, I enjoy the outdoors and going to church. I am very devoted to God. I enjoy the blessing of love God has given to me. I find joy in being a comfort to those in their time of need. My ultimate goal is to spread as much love as I can.

Making A Mark In The Literary World With Executive Editor, Adrienne Michelle Horn

IT ALL STARTED BECAUSE OF MY DAUGHTER There are many reasons why professional dreams and talents take flight in a person’s life. Some may be fueled by financial obstacles, family origins, or parenthood. For Adrienne Michelle Horn, her life changed in a flash, and she rose to the occasion without crumbling in defeat. Adrienne began her career in professional editing with her daughter as her guiding inspiration. Although editing was not her first professional choice, she was talented in the world of English due to college courses she took during her undergraduate matriculation. After losing her job as a pharmacist, she was left with some major decisions in order to care for her young daughter. “During Christmas of 2016, I lost my job as a pharmacist,” explains Adrienne. “As a result, I relied on my minor from college, which was English,” she continues. Just like that, her new life as an editor began as she was forced to think quickly about how she could use her assets. With a simple post, “Hey, does anyone need help editing or proofreading?” Adrienne took a leap of faith. From there, the literary flood gates opened to multiple possibilities that birthed her brand of I A.M. Editing, Ink.

Like most mompreneurs, Adrienne also has to balance her life between motherhood and business. “I don’t balance it; I juggle it,” laughs Adrienne. “There are many moving parts that making it challenging to balance. Juggling works fine for me. It’s the way that I manage my time. I also have a team to assist me,” she continues. “An entrepreneur is a problem solver. Things come up on any given day, and your business does not run if you don’t solve problems,” she explains. What To Expect When Hiring An Editor Many aspiring authors are on the hunt for the perfect editor. Editors are a crucial piece to completing a writing project. “A good editor is consistent. The more they edit, the better they become,” she states. While there are several different types of editors and service providers, Adrienne is putting us up on game in order to seek the best professional for your project. Here are some key tips to consider when hiring an editor: Make sure the editor is credible.” Seek quality and a good reputation when considering your editor’s credibility. Do they have any credentials? Which certifications do they hold? Do they have any prior work samples? All of these questions are important to ask before contracting an editor. Make sure they tell you the difference between editing and proofreading.” Aspiring authors are a target for predatory editing and may even be overcharged for simple proofreading services that aren’t comparable to professional editing. Build a rapport with your editor.” Rapid processing systems may seem to make the editing service quicker, but they can’t catch all of the personable aspects of each writing project. Building a rapport with your editor allows you both to understand the why behind your project, your specific genre, and story themes. A computer program cannot gain that trust and rapport, and it most certainly will not catch all of the errors. Ask them what their niche is?” Ask about their training to determine if they’re well versed in developmental, line editing, or copy editing. This will help you fulfill your exact project needs. Even if trained in a certain area, they may only work within a certain literary genre or provide a certain type of editing service. So ask away for clarity.

It’s The Branding For Me Many authors require more than editing to see their entire project all the way through. From book cover design, book formatting, obtaining an ISBN, and of course, editing, I A.M. Editing, Ink has expanded over the past three years into a one-stop for selfpublished authors. “We offer self-publishing services,” explains Adrienne. “Although editing tends to be the most laborious part of the publishing process, authors still need a lot of other components to publish a book successfully. While my primary function is editing, I have an entire team. Everything that you would need from project conception to manuscript upload is covered,” she continues. Adrienne didn’t just stop there either! I A.M. Editing, Ink also offers ghostwriting services for children’s books that target toddlers and preschoolers. “The quality is most important, not the credit,” she states about their ghostwriting services. Her brand serves to have a polished project that meets her client’s needs. In addition to those services, her company has launched The Writer’s Haven by I A.M. Editing, Ink , which entails writing journals that are perfect for creating to-do lists, writing affirmations, creating morning pages, writing poetry, and so much more. “In less than a month, we have sold close to 500 journals for writers,” continues Adrienne. With five designs thus far and two being primarily for Black women, Adrienne aspires to have her company visible in larger retailers such as Walmart, Target, and Michaels. “We rarely walk into a store and see a journal that looks like us. I want to change that,” she mentions.

WHY YOU OUT HERE STRESSING? GIRL, USE YOUR SUPPORT SYSTEM Written by: Jami R.

You’re the boss, calling all the shots and making magic. When you’re a new business owner, the titles of employee, delivery driver, tech person, and accountant also come with that “boss” title. Oh, and if you are a mom and wife, you have an added list of responsibilities as well. However, being an entrepreneur sounds glamorous and freaking awesome at first . Making moves, working when you want and where you want, doing what you love is definitely the dream, right? The thing is no one warned you about the other side of entrepreneurship . You know, the side that drives you crazy, tries you, and can sometime make you cry. When the other side finally kicks in, you need some sort of support system. A support system that will pick up when you fall. A support system that will cheer you on, when the days are trying. A support system like family and friends. Let’s take a look at how important each member of this support system is.

WHY YOU OUT HERE STRESSING?

Benefits of Your Support System 1. Significant other: This person is there to let you know when you’re over doing it. When you need to take time out and get some YOU time. This person will also be there to take your mind off of things by helping you de-stress. This person will make sure that dinner is cooked, the kids are good, and that sex is on the list. Sex definitely plays an enormous role when it’s time to relive stress. According to www.everydayhealth.com, sex helps raise endorphins and other hormones that triggers a boost in your mood. Sex can also be used as a form of exercise which will help you get to a calm mindset and prevent increased blood pressure when encountering stressful activities. 2. Children Your children play an important part within your support system. With all of the activities they have going on themselves, you can’t help but forget about business. Their role is to provide you with increased cuddles and intense affection – something kids are great at, no matter the age range. For some reason, they have a keen sense in picking up when you’re stressed, sad, or just out of it. Cuddles and hugs play a strong role in lowering stress levels. This simple act increases the production of oxytocin with the added bonus of reducing the secretion of cortisol, which is the stress hormone. According to www.pennmedicine.org , high cortisol levels are linked to depression and an array of mental illness, which is something we definitely can’t afford to add to our list.

WHY YOU OUT HERE STRESSING?

3. Friends These are our cheerleaders, our squad, our “girl if you don’t calm down and take a drink” players. Friends will listen to you vent without taking it personal. Friends will let you know if you’re doing too much. They play a huge role in the support system because every person has their role in the circle of friends. According to www.piedmont.org , having a strong social support system acts as a buffer to dealing with stress. Just like cuddling with kids, taking time out to chat with your friends also lowers cortisol levels. Long story short, we all need a strong support system! Did you hear me in the back?? No more doing it ALL alone. No more holding everything in. We followed our dreams and started our businesses for what reason? To die early from heart attacks and not enjoy life with our family? Nope. I didn’t, so I know for a fact that was NOT in your business plan. I know we have the feeling of not having enough hours in the day when it comes to our time as entrepreneurs. However, make time! If you need to, put it on your calendar. Section off certain days to de-stress. Stop work at a certain time every day or make the weekends your days off. No matter how much you have to get done, it will be there. If you have a deadline, make sure you schedule around it. Here is another tip: start your days with a simple kiss and hug. Do the same at night. Do this every day. Chat with a girlfriend at lunch and make plans to hang. Text your children and see how their day is going or send them a funny emoji of GIF. If they are smaller children, read them a bedtime story. Do this every week and you’ll begin to notice that you will be able to handle your stress a little better. When we use our support system, there is no stopping us.

Story Time My name is Cynthia Roberson, and I was born and raised in Marion, Alabama. I started doing hair at the age of 10. By age 12, I was making money from it. My mom and dad had three girls and a boy. Let me just say my mom wasn’t good at doing her girls’ hair. This is what got me into styling hair. I also grew up watching my sweet grandmother, Mary Woods, pressing women’s hair. In 2008, after having my first son, I decided to go to cosmetology school. I completed my program in 2009 and would later pass my state board examination. The following year, my son’s father and I got married. We have been blessed with a 10-year union and three beautiful children. He’s my rock and biggest supporter! At first, I would do everything I could not to do hair. It had me very busy at a young age. However, I truly believe it’s my purpose and calling from God. I’m very passionate about it. I walked away from a very high paying job back in 2014 to continue entrepreneurship as a stylist. In 2015, my sons pushed me to open my own salon, and I did! Although this journey has been filled with ups and downs, I have been extremely successful.

PWH sits down with Cynthia Roberson as she shares her the story of her entrepreneurial journey.

CYNTHIA ROBERSON

After our daughter’s birth in 2017, I had the idea to create my hair care line. My daughter’s hair coils very tightly. Once it lost moisture, her curls and coils would become very dry and hard to detangle. I had no idea why her hair would go from being very soft to extremely dry in just a couple of days. In an effort to provide the proper care for my daughter’s hair texture, I began to research the ingredients that I used on her hair. Shockingly, I discovered that many of the products I used on her hair contained alcohol, which is not healthy for many African-American textures. I knew that if I created a product that focused on retaining moisture, wash days would be a lot easier on us both. As a result, I created Hair Shaft Hair Care, a vegan hair care line. I am proud to say that it has proven to work miracles for my daughter’s hair after consistent use, and I am confident it will do the same for yours. If you are struggling with dry, brittle hair, consider using the Hair Shaft Hair Care System. Currently, this line contains shampoo, leave-in conditioner, blossom oil, and edge control.

IDENTITY.

By Bonniejean Alford, The Identity Guru ™

Often misunderstood as the part instead of the whole, identity remains an elusive enigma swimming in a sea not yet discovered. Aspects are simple enough, yes. However, the whole of an identity takes a lifetime to unfold. I have good news for you, though. Most of the time, we only need to comprehend pieces of our identity at a given time to achieve success. We walk through life as truly a sum of our parts, almost like how we put on clothes from our closets. At work, we wear one identity outfit. With family, another. With friends, still another. With strangers, something entirely different. Together, each person has one pretty kick-ass wardrobe. Of course, herein, I do not intend to define identity. Rather, I want to bring you to understand how you can leverage your identity for the benefit of growing your success – personally or professionally. In marketing, we call this focus on identity branding . An organization that creates a centralized brand and carries it through all actions of their business will rise into a state of thriving, while those that ignore this key business component will often stumble and fall flat. I speak on this both from a place of expertise and personal experience. I have managed my company for more than twenty years. When it began, I only knew I had a communication firm. I knew little about branding. That knowledge came later when I returned to graduate school. And I certainly didn’t have any clue about purpose, let alone the who of my company. I had skills. I tried to use all of them all at the same time. I did too much and lacked focus. This left me stumbling.

I was missing my own brand. Sure, I had a company name. I had an education. I had all the parts. I simply didn’t know how they fit together. I didn’t know what string tied it all together as one identity. Ironically, the realization came at a random moment when a guest speaker was presenting in one of the classes I taught at a local community college. I had found the missing piece, finally. All of my work centered around identity. I don’t know how I missed it, except that I didn’t have someone like me guiding me to see it. As a coach, I work with clients to hone one aspect of their identity as it relates to establishing a clear brand. I generally do this for creative types. Authors. Entrepreneurs. Artists. Step by step, I walk them through knowing themselves from a business perspective for the purpose of selling their product, whatever it is. Most of my clients are authors with beautiful stories waiting to release from their mind onto the page. I help them shape the story with their brand in mind because the story is a brand. They want it to sell. They want the world to see their work. And with the proper time and planning, their brand strategy remains the difference between succeeding and not succeeding. The brand is everything, even if they didn’t realize they were creating a brand. That’s the thing. Everything we do shapes us for the world to see. Owning this reality, focusing on it, reveling in it means we walk the walk, not just talk the talk. #beYOU #beBEAUTIFUL #beyourBRAND Ask The Identity Guru™ for advice on branding and identity by sending an email to asktheexpert@theidentityguru.net

@PRICELESSMAKEUP23

s s e l e Pric p u e k Ma WHERE EVERY GIRL FEELS PRICELESS I love to give women an experience. From the moment you sit in my chair, I am speaking words of affirmation. I believe in helping women feel their best because when they feel good, they can take over the world. You never realize how good it feels to get so many compliments and second looks until you get out of that chair, looking your best. You literally feel like a new woman. I love teaching others how to apply make up as well. I want people to be able to carry that confidence around whether they are in my chair or not. I offer classes to teach others how to achieve their signature look whether they have products or not. I love providing my clients with their first kit because so many women make the mistake of purchasing products that do not fit their skin type. I offer in-home services as well so that clients don’t have to worry about ruining their make up. BRING IN THE THREE C’S IN THE NEW YEAR! Written by Patrice Rivers

Can you believe that it is 2021? 2020 was filled with trials and tribulations of the pandemic, which caused many businesses to shut down and Covid-19 to take the lives of millions. But this year, we aren’t going to dwell on that any longer because it is a BRAND new year, which means new opportunities and blessings will be coming our way. We can finally exhale and take in everything that has happened and what is about to happen. The thought of burying our frustrations, rejections, pain, sorrows, and trials deep within our souls and cleansing it, again and again, sounds like a beautiful thing to do because many of us have experienced some negative distractions that almost had us depressed. If you are ready for a new beginning with a fresh new start, raise your hand or both hands if you’d like! Breathe in and out, then exhale all the baggage and craziness of 2020.

"Reset your mind to receive positive thoughts" PAGE FOUR| JOURNEY

Leave it there buried in the back of your mind. Erase it from your memories. Just let it go! Okay, ladies...and gents! Now that you have officially made room in your closet and your mind for new opportunities and blessings, it’s time to hit that reset button and have a quick transformation. You see, by hitting the reset button, you are permitting yourself to reset your mind, heart, soul, and body back to their original factory settings. So whatever pain or distractions or even heartaches you been through last year, it’s gone forever in the universe somewhere where you don’t have to worry about it anymore. Reset your mind to receive positive thoughts and positive energy. Reset your soul so that it won’t become disturbed by the enemy. Reset your spirit so that you can make room for blessings and new opportunities. Reset your heart so that you can feel whole again. It’s time to hit that reset button and start life anew. Now that your mind is clear and you’ve hit that reset button, let’s talk about the three C’s you should focus on this year. I learned this one evening during Bible study when my Bishop was talking about this and wanted to share it with you all. Please take out your pen and notebook because I am about to give you some empowerment tools to help both of us.

Creativity : We are all filled with creative juices, and when those juices get going, we want to share them with the world. If you are a business owner, entrepreneur, or even an author, you should already know about being creative. Let’s go back to the Covid-19 days where businesses were forced to shut down; many people tapped into their creativity and created a business or project. Many men and women challenged themselves and stepped out of their comfort zone to create something. Use your creativity to develop new projects for your brand or business to attract new clients and get the word out about who you are. This year get creative! You might even surprise yourself during the process! Courage : Have you ever thought to yourself, “I don’t think I can do this or that?” Well, for 2021, you can, and you will! There are so many different opportunities out here in the world that are just waiting for us to find them and snatch them up. A lot of the time, we doubt ourselves and decide to stay in our comfort zones. At some point in our lives, we fear to challenge ourselves because of the result. But I challenge you this year to go after something you want. I am speaking to myself because I was comfortable where I’m at for a very long time, but last year I started booking more speaking engagements and collaborating with people that will help get the word out about my brand and my children’s books. So sis, go for it! Don’t allow your mind or fear stop you! You got this!

Confidence : How confident are you in yourself? Some may say very confident, while others may say somewhat confident. If you don’t believe in yourself or your craft, purpose, or gift, you will go through life unsure about yourself and your choices. Confidence goes hand in hand with self-esteem, as well. If you don’t feel worthy or believe in your brand, why should others believe in it? I’ve learned that one way to gain confidence is to recite or read positive affirmations. This year, bring in the New Year with these three C’s and watch your brand, business, mind, heart, life, soul, and blessings grow! Sometimes it is hard to let the pain and hurt go because of the damage that was done. That’s why it is vital to surround ourselves with positive people who support us, encourage us, and have our best interests at heart. There are many negative people out there waiting for us to fail and fall, but as the strong woman we are, we will always rise back up to the top! I hope this year is filled with blessings, confidence, creativity, support, new beginnings, and new connections.

EMBRACE YOUR 2021 NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS IN THREE EASY WAYS Written by Fida Abbott

We read many articles about New Year’s resolutions, from printed and online media, blogs, and social media. Many fail to fulfill them, including me. Several reasons can include unexpected medical conditions or life events that we could not avoid. Or maybe it could result from just one simple reason: our goal was too high to be reached within a year. I remember my 2018 New Year’s resolution was selfpublishing my book. Later I gave it the title Exploring My Ideas . I wanted to publish it that year because I wanted to support my church that would celebrate 150 years—a remarkable number to celebrate. I wanted to support the renovation building costs through my book launch party by having a silent auction. I presented my books with Indonesian products in several baskets. My 2018 New Year’s resolution was reached. My book was published on June 5, 2018. Then I set it up for book award events and reviews. In the summer of 2019, my book received a Pinnacle Book Achievement Award from the National Association of Book Entrepreneurs in the category of Short Story. Bringing my book to several book award events was one of my 2019 New Year’s resolutions, and I won.

About the Author: Fida Abbott, an award-winning author, was born in Indonesia but currently lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and daughter. Besides expressing herself in her writings in Indonesian and English, she is an Indonesian language instructor serving USAF. She can be contacted via her website at www.abbottsbooks.com.

I kept pursuing my other 2019 New Year’s resolution, which was to translate my book into Indonesian. I looked forward to building a network with American authors by joining many groups for authors on Facebook. As I was almost finished translating it, an unexpected medical condition happened. My daughter was hospitalized for six weeks and then placed in an outpatient program for another three weeks before returning to school on January 6, 2020. I could not reach this goal in 2019, so I set it as my 2020 New Year’s resolution. I kept joining many groups for authors that I was interested in on Facebook to see if there were any opportunities to build my network. There were. Several months after New Year in 2020, I saw a post in one of the groups I joined. It was an invitation to join a book collaboration project. I was interested and decided to join it. I felt comfortable as this idea came from the founder of the Pretty Women Hustle Network, who is smart, kind, and communicative. Now I look forward to our book being published in 2021 entitled PRETTY, PAID, AND POWERFUL: 40 Days to Empowering the Woman Within. Participating in this book collaboration project becomes the first step in building my network with other American authors. What have I learned from these experiences? First, I focused on one thing, then executed it through plans and actions. Second, I made it simple and could continue it if I failed. Third, and most importantly, I made it fun with no pressure at all. Following these three easy steps made it possible for me to achieve my New Year’s resolutions. I am sure that if I can do it, you can do it too.

Happy New Year! It’s time to start thinking about your goals and your plan for this year. It’s time now more than ever to implement self-care in your daily routine. Self-care is necessary to remind yourself and others that you and your needs are important. It’s time to create a few new routines that can ensure we keep our health at the forefront. To have an effective growing business , you must be in a healthy personal space all around the board. So self-care is detrimental to our growth. Self-care should be applied in all areas of your life. Here are some key areas of selfcare: Physical Psychological Emotional Spiritual Social

You must remain consistent with your lifestyle. Anything you do for 30 days diligently can naturally become a habit. Remember selfawareness plus self-care will enhance your self-confidence. And when you are confident , you are able to pursue and enjoy your endeavors. When we are running a business, to be productive and effective on a regular basis , we must maintain a healthy self-care regimen. It is important to sleep well, eat healthier, and exercise consistently. We should fulfill all of these areas in our lives that need our attention. This is why time management is an important key factor that will set the tone for our life journey. Lack of sleep has been shown to cause cognitive impairment, affecting critical thinking, concentration , and alertness. We need to make educated choices about the fuel refilling our tanks.

SELF-CARE WILL CREATE THE PLATFORM FOR YOUR PERSONAL GROWTH AND SUCCESS. HEY GIRLFRIEND, IT’S YOUR MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONAL

Feed yourself positivity by implementing my new rule. It can help you endure long workdays. Try some healthier recipes, and please don’t forget to keep drinking water! Also , listening to your favorite playlist will help you switch out of your work zone. Effective time management can help with prioritizing tasks. It can ease the feeling of overwhelmed ness and prevent burnout. So many of us small business owners feel obligated to always work on our brand because we understand that we must be diligent and consistent if we want to prosper. There is some truth to that, but we must be fulfilled within ourselves and have a clear vision to fulfill any task. This will ensure our path to success . Reminders Stay consistent with your self care plan. Self reflect every month . Adjust your plan as needed to help you stay on track. Journal your experiences. Tap into yourself . Set reminders for that extra push Ask for help if you need it. Repeat the process and adjust as much as needed to develop a constant self - care plan.

Trina’s Tips 1. Do a social media check out once a week. Take a mental break for your own peace and sanity. Remember , you become your thoughts. Try to do a mind sweep. 2. Apply daily self-care in your life. Spend some time alone. Sit in full peace. There are simple things around the house you can do , such as take a bubble bath, light a candle , or play some relaxing music. 3. Find an inexpensive hobby. Think of things that you have wanted and put on hold. Let’s make good use of our time at home. For example, paint your room or complete a DIY project. 4. Exercise, make good use of the space you are in. For example, walk up and down the stairs for ten minutes. Do some jumping jacks, or watch a YouTube workout video. 5. Write your goals and create a plan for the next 3, 6, and 9 months. 6. Set an alarm or a reminder for these small activities. .
