ally will show her support to the community with a 60-minute performance in West Hollywood Park on Friday, June 7. “I am so happy to be a part of this year’s LA Pride Festival and to celebrate this year’s theme, #JUSTUNITE,” Paula Abdul said, according to a press release. “Throughout the course of my career, the LGBTQ+ community has stood behind me, and I’m honored to now have the opportunity to show my support and gratitude by performing at this year’s Opening Ceremony. I’m hoping the night will be a chance for all generations of the community to come together to celebrate one another and the work that has been done.” As part of LA Pride’s vision to engage the local Los Angeles community and beyond, Friday night programming is returning to provide more events and activities in which the community can participate at no
cost and for the first time, CSW will host an official Opening Ceremony. The ceremony will include welcoming remarks from a diverse mix of community and spiritual leaders and advocates for the LGBTQ+ community. In addition to the headlining performance from Paula Abdul, entertainment for the night will include a WeHo Vogue Ball & Drag Show, as well as a full night of music and dancing from local DJs.
While the June 7 event is open to the public, LA Pride Festival goers are encouraged to purchase tickets for the weekend’s festivities (June 8-9) in advance online at lapride.org. Volunteers who work a four-hour shift will receive complimentary single-day tickets to the festival. Ticket sales and proceeds from the LA Pride Festival support and fund the LA Pride Parade, LGBTQ+ community grant programs and scholarships, and CSW’s ongoing
programming at Casa del Sol. CSW provides free festival tickets to LGBTQ+ non-profits and service organizations to distribute to their members.

> LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Defending the Rainbow Flag Creator COMMUNITY PRIDE
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
involved in the process. So I find it dismaying that Lynn Segerblom’s concept for the flags has been diminished by people who were not there and have no desire to due diligence on the Rainbow Flags creation by interviewing Lynn or the artists who were there. The question has to be…, why…? Why deny Lynn Segerblom, the “Woman Behind The Rainbow Flag” her legacy and besmirch her reputation without even talking to her or the artists who witnessed the flags creation…?
In response to a “Letter to the Editor” that ran on April 4, 2019 regarding the true identity for the historic rainbow flag creator
My name is Lee Mentley, I was a member of the Executive Committee of the San Francisco Pride Foundation (NOTE: A Grouping of Lions is known as a Pride, thus The Pride Foundation.) at 330 Grove Street Gay Community Center and Director of the Top Floor Gallery where the Rainbow Flags were created. Gilbert Baker and I were also roommates at the Heartbreak Hotel, South of Market off Folsom Street, in 1979, which was both a state of mind and a real place…! Mr. Beal, I read your letter concerning the “Woman Behind The Rainbow Flag”, Lynn Segerblom, known then as “Fairy Argyle Rainbow” on her official California Driver’s License. However, I don’t remember you being there…? Were you…? I do remember Lynn Segerblom, Robert Guttman and James McManara coming into the Pride Office at 330 Grove Street to speak with Paul Hardman, President of The Pride Foundation. They presented Pride with the idea of making Rainbow Flags for Gay Freedom Day 1978 to decorate the dull gray San Francisco Civic Center. The parade committee had not received its federal non-profit classification and Pride Foundation agreed to allow the committee to use ours until their IRS# came through. This was the first year Gay Freedom Day adopted co-chairs of one woman & one man for all committees. Lynn Segerblom and Gilbert Baker were appointed co-chairs of the Decorating Committee. The Pride Foundation thought the Rainbow Flags were a great idea and Paul Hardman approached San Francisco Supervisors Harvey Milk & Quintin Kopp to ask for additional funds for this project.Thankfully they found funding through the Hotel Tax and awarded approximately $1000 for this new project. Neither the
Lee Mentley
parade committee nor any individual could ask for public funds without an IRS #501-c3. All Gay Freedom Day Parade funding came through the Pride Foundation’s IRS#501c-3 that year. The Top Floor Gallery offered the gallery workshop as space to create the flags. I remember the day the Rubbermaid trash cans arrived; we filled them with water and watched Lynn mix the dyes for the flags. The dying process took many days with the help of the artists from the Eureka/Noe Valley Artist Coalition (E/NVAC). Yes, Gilbert was there and yes he helped but he was no Betsy Ross. Cleve Jones was a volunteer for the parade committee but not a known artist of the Top Floor Gallery or E/NVAC. Gilbert to his credit worked endlessly to make the flag an international symbol and Cleve is most notable for the AIDS Quilt. Gilbert worked one of the large Rainbow Flags by sewing it together along with over 100+ other artists who worked on creating several flags of different designs to surround the reflection pool
and other flag poles at Civic Center. Gilbert also made a beautiful poster by using a blueprint of City Hall and silk screening it with rainbow colors. I believe he made 100 sign & numbered, I donated mine to the ONE Archive at USC. ONE Archive at USC Doheny Library in Los Angeles is where Pride Foundation donated its papers and history to this oldest and largest of our Gay Archives & Library through Mattachine Society’s Jim Kepner & Morris Kight. I suggested to a sweet friend when I heard he was involved with Gilbert’s new book that he make use of ONE Archive to see how the flags were funded and created. Unfortunately he was not interested in doing any research on the artists who participated in making the Rainbow Flags as if that would damage Gilbert Bakers claim to fame.Again, lovely & talented as Gilbert was, he was not alone in this process as the creator…! It is important again to note 1978 was the first year the Gay Freedom Day Committee had co-chairs and that women were fully and joyfully
(NOTE: Lee Mentley, In San Francisco was the first openly gay city employee at the Neighborhood Arts Program with San Francisco Arts Commission; President of Eureka Valley Promotion Association; Chair of the Eureka/Noe Valley Artists Coalition, one of the founders of the Castro Street Fair and Hula Palace Art Salons; a long-term member of the Gay Freedom Day Parade Committee; served on the Executive Committee of Pride Foundation at 330 Grove Street Gay Center; Director of Top Floor Gallery. Moving to Hawaii 1983, Lee became Curator of Kauai Museum; Chair of the Garden Island Arts Council, founder of END/AIDS; an educational network dialoguing AIDS; a founder of Kauai AIDS Project ‘Malamapono’, and sat on the Hawaii Governor’s Committee on HIV/ AIDS. He was a Hawaii State Public Health Director, HIV/AIDS Kauai-Division, Chair of the ‘CCG’ National Community Constituency Group at National Institutes of Health NIAID for HIV/AIDS Research Washington DC. He served as one of two members of ‘Lambda Aloha’ as Kauai Representatives to Hawaii Statewide Committee for Same Sex Marriage. In 2000 Lee became AIDS History Curator for ONE Archive at University of Southern California Los Angeles. In 2001 he became Director of Cultural Tourism Marketing and Development for City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs and author of his recently published memoir, “The Princess of Castro Street” 2016. Lee is now retired.)
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Supporting Fairy the Rainbow Flag Creator
A second response to a “Letter to the Editor” regarding the true identity for the historic rainbow flag creator As a friend of Lynn Segerblom’s since 1975, a writer/activist since 1966, a participant in these events, and the author of a just-finished book on her, let me share a few easily verifiable facts re: Charley Beale’s recent letter disputing Lynn’s truthful claim to have designed the 1978 rainbow flags. Gilbert Baker promoted the iconic 6-stripe flag heroically for decades but he didn’t design the original 8-stripe flags. I saw them created under the auspices of SF’s prominent gay activist Lee Mentley, the grandfather of the flag. I also performed under them onstage at the 1978 parade. Assisted by Harvey Milk, Lee got $1000 to buy materials for those flags. As an executive member of the Pride Foundation, he
also gave approval for Lynn’s design, contradicting GB’s published claims. And since facts matter, Gilbert never named Lynn. Her 1976 California Driver’s license was issued for Faerie Argyle Rainbow. James McNamara was the third central member of the flag-making team.Paul Langlotz- James McNamara’s then-partner, is quoted in the Advocate’s validating Lynn since they were all friends and/or roommates at the time As one of the Angels of Light free theater group until 1979, Lynn, like myself, had to follow strictures forbidding members from taking any credit by name until 1980. Thus, getting personal recognition was impossible in 1978. That is why she never got due credit. In 1971, Lynn began doing tie-dye and rainbows at age thirteen. By 1977, she
was known in SF as “the rainbow artist,” designing clothes for Capezio’s. In February 1978, months before the Pride parade in June, she designed rainbow costumes for an Angels of Light show staged in early March. If the Baker archive has ‘voluminous’ evidence of GB being the flag’s designer,as claimed, in the interest of history, I suggest presenting it side by side with all these facts and other eyewitness testimonies for objective evaluation under the auspices of the ONE archive.
Sincerely, Adrian Brooks San Francisco (415) 252-5959 Photos: Courtesy James McNamara.

better care of myself but everytime I see myself in the mirror I just feel so unattractive any way to help me feel better? I am also quite resentful at the fact that I have to live up to the standards of beauty, I hate that I am expected to look good. Why can't I be appreciated for me. Dear Beauty Queen,
yourself until you have a mental breakdown. Then you'll start thinking you are ugly AND annoying. So don't do affirmations this way. The correct way to do affirmations is this: You work up the thought ladder with the next most positive thought that you can BELIEVE in your state of emotion. I am going to use myself as an example. I struggle with the way I look sometimes and this is what I do:
Okay. First of all you are doing "that thing" a lot of people do that holds them back from what they really want. You expressed in the first sentence that you want to feel more attractive and more confident... then a few sentences later you are angry about having to be prettier which are thoughts that are actively working AGAINST ONE ANOTHER!! If you want to be more confident and beautiful, you can't be resentful at people who prefer confident and beautiful people, or worse yet resentful at people who are confident and beautiful! You get me? Your goal is to BE MORE CONFIDENT AND BEAUTIFUL. So stop working against yourself. I know you are like, "well that all sounds great, Aidan, but HOW THE HECK DO I DO THAT?" AFFIRMATIONS. But most people are not using affirmations properly. Truly. When you feel like UGLY then you say to yourself over and over, "IM BEAUTIFUL, IM BEAUTIFUL," you are doing nothing but annoying
(Looks in the mirror feels bad) "I am Ugly" (what's the next thought that you can think that you can actually believe) "I am not the ugliest person in the world" (okay good now what) "I am not SO ugly"... (okay now you start to look for aspects of you that you MIGHT BE OKAY WITH) "I guess I have nice hair," "Several people have told me I have nice hair" ... "My hair is silky"... "My hair is attractive" ... "I like my bangs"... "My bangs cover up my UGLY FACE" (XXX this is a WORSE feeling; though, it's okay you took a wrong turn. Just get back on track). "My eyes are brown"... "I do like my eyelashes"... "They are long"... "People pay a lot of money for these kinds of eye lashes"... "My teeth are white"..."I guess I do have a lot of things that make me attractive"... "I am also tall" ... "I enjoy my tallness"... "I guess I am okay looking" ... "I am imperfect, but I have good qualities too" ... "No one is perfect" ... "I am not any less perfect that anyone really if you
think about it" ... "Some people think im attractive" ... "I think im okay" ... "I clean up nice" ... "I’ve had moments where I thought I was beautiful" ... "I guess I'm not so bad." On and on and on... You are using affirmations to climb the ladder of thought. Because a slightly more positive thought will trigger a slightly more positive emotion, which will trigger a slightly more positive thought, which will... you get the idea. Give it a shot. It works. But you gotta catch yourself if you find yourself expressing a thought that brings you lower instead of higher. It's an active process not to be done on autopilot. Do this everyday for five minutes for a month and watch your life change. Hearing Aid Technology at Alexander Audiology Hearing aids in the 21st century with Dr. Melissa Alexander By Staff Writer Hearing aids have come leaps and bounds just within the last ten years. Advancements in technology have resulted in hearing aids of higher quality that compliment any lifestyle. Patients have far more options than they did a decade ago, and the possibilities are virtually endless. “Everyone has an idea of what hearing aids look like and sound like based on their friends’ and family’s experiences. Most of the time it’s not always positive,” said Dr. Melissa Alexander, an audiologist based in Santa Monica. “10 years ago, we didn’t have hearing aids that had technology that reduced background noise. They were bulky in size. We didn’t have the ability to keep things waterproof or miniaturized. We didn’t have wireless technology. Now this whole world has opened up for patients that address a lot of the common complaints that people were dealing with for years.” Chunky hearing aids of the past have been replaced with small and powerful devices that require far less maintenance. Dr. Alexander continued, “We have types of hearing aids that we can implant into the patients that are long-lasting. Those are called Lyric, and those hearing aids are placed four millimeters from the eardrum. You don’t have to change the battery. You can sleep with them, shower with them, and live your life normally. You don’t have to turn them off. Every three to four months, the patient will come back to the office for a five- minute appointment- sometimes I go to their homes or their offices- and I pull them out before the battery fails, put brand new ones in, and within in five minutes they’re changed out.”
Dr. Melissa Alexander.

Come by the Alexander Audiology’s Santa Monica offices for a visit.
With improvements in wireless technology, patients can now hear someone speaking from a further distance than before. Dr. Alexander explained, “If you’re wearing a hearing aid and sitting in the living room, and your partner or friend is in a room that’s over 20 feet away, they can wear a tiny accessory that’s the size of a paper clip on the inside of their shirt or around their neck. When they speak normally, the patient will hear them directly because their voice is carried wirelessly to the hearing aid, amplified according to their hearing loss from any distance in the room. How far the speaker is away from the microphone is irrelevant at this point as long as they have this little accessory.” Patients can now also control nearly every aspect of their hearing aids through an iOS application. “Imagine you’re sitting in a noisy restaurant and you have an app on your phone where you can control your hearing aid with your app,” Dr. Alexander continued. “You can eliminate all the background noise. You can change where the hearing aid microphones are focused to pick up speech, with a narrow beam in front of you or wide for a group. You can change the equalizer to enhance speech. It’s very user friendly. And with the microphone accessory, if you’re sitting in a really noisy restaurant, which happens in almost every restaurant in LA, you can mute the microphone and only pick up the voice of the person streaming through the accessory that they’re wearing. For many patients, they’ll hear speech from that person better than a person with normal
hearing.” Patients can even take a phone call and stream it through the hearing aids without holding the phone up to them. Dr. Alexander added, “The hearing aids can become a Bluetooth speaker or headset. You can run on a treadmill with them and not even have to wear headphones. You can play music directly through the waterproof hearing aids.” In some cases, the new hearing aid technology can even save lives. Dr. Alexander explained, “We even have certain hearing aids that track your steps, measure your heart rate, blood pressure. God forbid you’re hiking and you have a heart attack, and you’re by yourself. The hearing aid has a specific way of telling the body chemistry, your temperature, and your heart rate and knows if you’re in trouble. And by a tilt of the head, you’ll have an SOS system come through your hearing aid and ask you if you need help medically. All you have to do is drop your head. It measures the direction of the fall of your head, and it’ll send a signal to the closest 9-1-1 to come rescue you.” Strides in hearing aid technology have vastly improved the quality of life for patients with hearing loss. “The stigma of wearing hearing aids I think is starting to erode because the technology is so advanced now,” Dr. Alexander said. “You have more freedom these days. You almost have an advantage over people that don’t have hearing aids.” With all the different options for hearing aids, many of which most people with hearing loss are unaware of, patients at Alexan-

der Audiology can try any of the technology for 90 days risk-free. “We really have every available opportunity to research what works for patients, the good, the bad, the everything, and really get to try different products. Genetics and Nutrition at Ananda Integrative Medicine A Westside health center that tailors diets to patients’ DNA. By Staff Writer
From pressed juices to plant-based diets, Westsiders are known for leading the way in healthy eating trends, and a health center located in the heart of Brentwood takes healthy eating to a whole new level based on an individual’s genes. For the health savvy Westside resident, nutrition genomics can help guide personal diet, nutrition, and exercise that can not only optimize your health, but the health of future generations. “Epigenetic factors including diet, environment and lifestyle habits have the power to regulate our DNA by switching genes on and off, which can influence the health of up to four generations,” said Reshma Patel, PA-C, MMS, CEO & Founder of Ananda Integrative Medicine. Before opening Ananda Integrative Medicine, located at 11950 San Vicente Blvd, Suite 110, Patel spent 14 years practicing family medicine, urgent care and occupational medicine in the Los Angeles area. Ananda Integrative Medicine helps patients not only be healthy but address the root cause of issues. According to Patel, one diet cannot suit everybody and at her practice, patients can develop a nutrition plan tailored specifically to their DNA. “Nutrition has an ‘epigenetic’ effect on our DNA. In other words, nutrition is one of the major ways we can change the destiny of our genetic healthy history and reverse disease statistics,” Patel said. “Genetics and biochemistry help us discover how we are different, and what we can do to potentially overcome disease susceptibilities through the understanding of epigenetics by applying it to our diet, lifestyle and your environment.” A specific example of how Ananda Integrative Medicine can use genetics to overcome disease susceptibilities is with patients who
have a change in the amino acid sequence of the MTHFR enzyme, which adds a methyl group to folic acid so that the body is able to use it. MTHFR variants are linked with miscarriages, depression, fibromyalgia, autism, coronary artery disease, infertility and autism. At Ananda Integrative Medicine, however, nutritional genomics can be used to develop a diet with foods like dark leafy greens and supplements like methylfolate that can support any variants in this gene. “Carrying the MTHFR gene is a potential risk; it doesn’t mean that the enzyme won’t function well,” Patel said. “Genes are not your destiny. They are a blueprint for diseases and conditions you may be at risk for. We can use this information to mitigate the risk by using nutrition and lifestyle changes.” Other examples of gene variants nutri-

tional genomics can help address include the BCOL gene which can be supplemented with Vitamin A, FUT2 gene and Vitamin B12 and PPAR-ALPHA GENE. Variants in this gene have a poor response to fasting due to low ketone bodies, and according to Patel, this may explain diverse reactions to a ketogenic diet. According to Patel, 15 years ago such personalized care was not available to patients, but rapid advances in science have made nutritional genomics something anybody can utilize to lead a healthier life. The Human Genome Project was completed in 2003 at the cost of $2.3 billion. This opened the world to understanding what makes us unique. In 2006 it cost $300,000 to sequence one human genome. By 2016 the cost was under $5,000. Today you can get your whole genome sequenced for $1,000. “The hope is to have it down to $200 in the near future. The genome is the complete set of DNA, and where you find the instructions to build health. The DNA remains fixed for life, but the epigenome remains flexible,” Patel said. “Understanding your
genes leads to personalized medicine that is made for you.” And nutritional genomics is just one of many ways Ananda Integrative Medicine help patients develop personalized health plans, including infrared sauna treatments and vitamin injections, both of which provide patients a wide range of health benefits. “Infrared saunas are an effective tool for natural healing and prevention. Benefits include: relaxation, detoxification, pain relief, blood pressure reduction, improved circulation, skin purification, anti-aging, wound healing, cell health muscle recovery and immunity,” Patel said. “Vitamin injections are great for boosting energy, metabolism, promoting better mood, immune support and thyroid support.” For more information about Ananda Integrative Medicine’s services, visit AnandaIntegrativeMedicine.com/Services, call (424) 259-2089 or follow on Facebook @ AnandaIntegrativeMedicine and Instagram @anada_integrative_medicine.

Wide-Ranging Benefits of Oxygen Therapy By Staff Writer
Just because you breathe in enough oxygen to survive, your brain and other organs may not be receiving enough oxygen to function properly. OxygenWELL, a hyperbaric oxygen therapy center in Brentwood, however, delivers oxygen to where you need it the most, allowing Westside residents to live life to the fullest. From world-class athletes, weekend warriors and celebrities, to children on the autism spectrum, adults in need of brain health support and even lovers, hyperbaric oxygen therapy can benefit patients from all walks of life. Patients at OxygenWELL relax in a high-pressure, oxygen-rich chamber for this FDA-approved therapy that can transform a person's health. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy bathes cells in the body with oxygen, regrowing and healing damaged cells and blood vessels. "Our patients breathe in 100 percent medical grade oxygen while relaxing in our pressurized hyperbaric oxygen chambers. The pressure is the key to liquefying the oxygen into the plasma so it can reach areas where oxygen in its normal state is often limited to reach because of inflammation or damaged blood vessels," said Beth Meneley, Functional Medicine Practioner and Licensed Acupuncturist and owner of OxygenWELL. Here are some examples of the myriad of ways OxygenWELL can enhance the lives of Westside residents. Love While Valentine's Day may have already

passed, with spring around the corner, love is still in the air. So how can oxygen therapy help play the role of Cupid? Beth Meneley explains. "Sex drive and the ability to perform is significantly compromised by a lack of oxygen and blood supply," Meneley said. "This can easily be reversed by allowing greater levels of oxygen to enter the body and give your libido a true boost." Perform With year-round sunshine, Westsiders tend to lead a very active lifestyle. Whether you are a pro-

fessional athlete or a recreational runner or tennis player, OxygenWELL's therapy will boost your performance. "Oxygen plays a critical role in the body's ability to perform at its optimal performance capacity," Meneley said. "Activities requiring top speed mental and physical performance can benefit from the extra energy." Focus Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is not just beneficial for boosting physical performance, it can also
boost mental performance as well. "The brain is the highest consumer of oxygen inside the body and uses 25 percent of all the oxygen that you breathe. Getting more oxygen allows for better attention and focus, sharper memory, faster reaction time, clearer thoughts and overall better cognitive functioning," Meneley said. Aging Most of us notice the aging of our skin, but internally our cells are aging too. OxygenWELL's anti-aging therapy, however, can turn the clock back from the inside out. "The process of aging causes a general lack of energy that transforms to all parts of the body and is generally seen as 'slowing down'," Meneley said. "Oxygen is the critical nutrient that can provide you with that energy to get back and play." In addition, hyperbaric oxygen therapy can reverse the aging effects that are seen with sagging skin by stimulating collagen and stem cell production On top of these traditional therapy sessions, OxygenWELL now offers 30 and 60-minute sessions with targeted Red Light therapy inside a mild hyperbaric chamber for an energizing experience, called The Energizer. "It's perfect for before or after exercising, a yoga class, for a quick pick me up, hangover or immune boost," Meneley said. "Patients can bring in their iPad or phone inside this chamber, listen to music, read or relax." For more information, visit oxygenwell.com or call (818) 661-0939.

OLDER WORKERS GET YOUNGER BOSSES
The boss is not the old man anymore. Young so-called “digital leaders” are taking over as top dog in many companies these days, using their knowledge of technology to trump the wisdom of seniority, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. But, says AMAC president Dan Weber, older Americans are still very active these days and most of them don’t like the idea of giving up their careers. “Seventy is the new 50, but some seniors feel like they are 40 years old again. They are not only living longer, they’re living healthier, more active lives and so the concept of retirement has undergone a remarkable change.” So, according to Weber, younger bosses does not mean that seniors are no longer an important part of the workforce. “It simply means that there’s a new role for older business men and women to play, as Chip Conley describes it in his book, Wisdom At Work: The Making of the Modern Elder. The fifty-eight-year-old entrepreneur Conley was a very successful hotel executive. He owned a chain of 58 boutique hotels, which he sold in 2010. A few years later he took a job at Airbnb as the in-house mentor to Brian Chesky, that company’s CEO. Conley says that he quickly learned that the notion of revering seniors in the workplace no longer applies. It used to be that traditional elders were held in reverence for their wisdom, but in this day and age they are appreciated for their relevance “because they’re as much of an intern as they are a mentor.” Says Conley: “I started to realize that there are some things they [younger executives] could teach me, like digital intelligence, and there are things that I could teach them, which is emotional intelligence, leadership skills, strategic thinking, etc. That is the opportunity. How do we create an intergenerational collaboration like we’ve never seen before because we have five generations in the workplace at the

same time, for the first time?” Conley’s book was published last September and by November he used the concepts he described in it to create a new venture he calls the Modern Elder Academy. It’s a one of a kind resort in the seaside town of El Pescadero located on Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. Forbes magazine explains that Conley got the idea for the academy as he was writing his book. “Right as I got the contract to write the book, it became clear to me that the number of people who were feeling anxious and bewildered in midlife was much broader than I had expected. I started asking myself: Where do people go if they are silently suffering through transitions?” As he described it to the author of the Forbes article, Richard Eisenberg, somewhere between 45 and 65 years of age, people begin to realize they are growing old and many of them can feel lost. “The average longevity in the United States in the year 1900 was 47. In 2000, it was 77. So, we added 30 years of life in one century. But that created something that really didn’t exist before, which is midlife. That’s why in 1965 the term midlife crisis emerged. At that time, midlife was perceived as 45 to 65 or 40 to 60. Today, I think it’s 35 to 75 because people are going to work longer and people start feeling irrelevant earlier,” explainsConley, noting that it is one of the reasons the Modern Elder Academy was created. But, AMAC’s Weber points out, there’s no dispute that many older Americans need to continue working past the traditional retirement age of 65 to make ends meet. But more and more of them want to stay on the job because it provides them with a sense of contentment; working makes them feel that they have purpose. The Academy may not be for everyone. For one thing, “tuition” for a one-week course is as much as $5,000 and for a two week Immersion Program, you’ll pay up to $10,000.
ARE YOU SUFFERING FROM DEPRESSION? ARE YOU OVER THE AGE OF 60? The UCLA Late-Life Mood, Stress and Wellness Program in the Geriatric Psychiatry Division is conducting a 12-month research study involving 12 weekly 60-minute sessions of either a health and education wellness class or a Tai Chi class. Participants will undergo three functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans. A complete psychiatric evaluation will be provided. Subjects will not be charged for participation and will be compensated. You must be at least 60 years old. If you or anyone you know is interested in participating, call for an appointment to see if you qualify, or for more information at: (310)-794-9523. The study will be conducted by Helen Lavretsky, M.D.

Getting in Sync with “Sychronicity”
The film “Synchronicity” is the story about two women who believe in the power of manifesting love into their lives with such force that when one moves next door to the other, those energies will finally come together. The premise of the film is to show a snapshot of what manifesting love looks like in practical practice. When we see these two women, one moving in next door to the other, have a bump in, and cut briefly into their apartments setting the table for two, expressing positive love statements about what they deserve, and making room in their closets for that love, we know that their manifestations will be answered as the Universe brings them even closer together. The Pride L.A. spoke with the actors involved in the film, Mandahla Rose, Mav Viola and Rudi Aliza. Check it out:
Stephanie and Allison made every part of this journey an absolute pleasure. What was your favorite scene to film? I really loved shooting with Mav. We instantly connected and just like in the film, we became instant mates. I enjoyed every part of bringing this film to life, including all the scenes we shot. What is unique about these characters? We are our own unique fingerprint and because of that, every single individual is unique but what brings people together are the relatable circumstances that the characters find themselves in. What do you hope the audience takes away from this film? What you think, you can create. With that in mind, go manifest your hearts desire. Definitely easier said than done. But not impossible. MANDAHLA ROSE: Who should watch this movie? How did you hear about this film? People who are open to the idea that love I was reached out to via Instagram and is possible. relatable? Absolutely. She's very relatable. She reminds me of myself before I met "the one" - a likable player. Not out to break anyone's heart, but could definitely use a little growing up. What was one particularly challenging scene to film? Honestly? Setting down a moving box, ha. No dialogue, just walking into a bedroom and setting a box down. The smallest of scenes can be the most difficult because the urge is to perform the shit out of it, when really you need to stop acting and just be a normal human doing a normal human thing. That can be hard. What was your favorite scene to film? Walking down the block with Mandahla's character. She's a great actress and we instantly clicked, as actors and characters. I could have run that scene a dozen times, it was fun every take. What is unique about these characters? What's unique is how simple and relatable they are. They're not overdone. And they're connected in ways they haven't yet discovered. What do you hope the audience takes away from this film? A refreshed since of intention in their life. Trust that if you're setting your intention, daily, the universe will silently conspire to make it happen. Who should watch this movie? Everyone. Duh. But definitely lesbians ;)

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Aries on this day should avoid pessimistic thoughts. Once in their power, you risk losing objective self-esteem, joining the ranks of people who are extremely unsure of their abilities. It becomes even more dangerous if today you have a public speech. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Taurus will not have much trouble, but will also not have any reasons for enthusiasm. First you will have to do a lot of duties at work, and in the evening you'll work alongside your second half. If you want, you can significantly liven up this monotonous process. GEMINI (May 21-June 21) Gemini will achieve brilliant results in sports. It’s about a competition which you will participate in side by side with colleagues. When the victory is being given to your team, you will experience real delight and invite your “classmates” to celebrate this event together. CANCER (June 22-July 22) Cancers are destined to learn a number of stunning details about the professional advancement of their spouse. Your partner will not only brilliantly pass all internal examinations at his company, but will also be appointed to a very prestigious position. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Leos will try to make an indelible impression on the parents of their better half. You plan your outfit to the smallest detail, spend a lot of time doing the cleaning in the home, and then work many hours to prepare your own special dish. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Virgos will have to choose between family and friends. Your help will be needed both in your own home and in the home of your best friend. Most likely, you just flip a coin and commit yourself to him, knowing that this will cause a big uproar in your household. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) Libra will very carefully choose their image for an event scheduled for this evening. As soon as you appear there, all eyes will be directed only at you, not the main reason for this big feast. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21) Scorpios will be irritated by the behavior of a particular person. It’s about your long-cherished sweetheart, who at first will agree to spend the evening with you, but at the last moment will change their mind. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Sagittarians on this day plan to visit the places where their distant childhood passed. You will not become nostalgic, walking along a strangely familiar square or seeing your neighbors grown old. You will be led here for some specific reasons. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Capricorns will regretfully remember all the mistakes made in the sphere of their personal attachments. You will be especially strained by an incident that happened recently between you and your soulmate. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Aquarius will be able to make a very profitable purchase. You accidentally look into the store and find here that the goods you have long wanted to buy are on sale at a reduced price. Without hesitation, you will acquire this item and will be very pleased. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Pisces will have time to accomplish a lot. In the daytime, you will very deftly finish your current project, and you will have free time to help a colleague with his work. In turn, he will decide to thank you for taking part in the elimination of his troubles.
