Judy Never Really Left Los Angeles How the queer Icon has shaped L.A.

There’s no doubt about it: 2019 is the year of Judy Garland. In L.A. terms, anyway. Not only did this year gift us Rupert Goold’s “Judy” featuring a star turn by Renee Zellwegger, we were also made privvy to some of Sid Luft’s (aka the third Mr. Garland’s) archives, exposing us to a whole new world of vintage Judy. It’s no secret that the longtime queer icon, forced into a barbituate habit at the tender age of thirteen by the MGM studio system, has always been beloved in Los Angeles. Hell, she was one of the Dream Factory’s most enduring symbols. But she was something more than a product of Hollywood’s golden age. For decades, Garland made her mark on the world by standing apart from the rest. She wasn’t forced into traditional roles because she wasn’t traditional in any sense. Her beauty was different, and so was her vulnerability. When she sang songs like “The Boy Next Door” or “In Between,” gays heard what she was saying. Behind the lyrics, Garland was singing a song of
pain to all the outsiders who weren’t able to see themselves in mainstream Hollywood stories. Though the rumor that Garland’s London funeral sparked the Stonewall Riots has been long since squashed, there’s an emotional truth to the story. For so long, Garland felt like the only gay representation there was. And not just in Hollywood, but all of America. Though her relationship with L.A., with Hollywood, and with the star system itself was complex, she owed a lot to the town that defied her. She and the family act moved from Michigan to California when Garland was only four years old. Her ashes were moved from Westchester to L.A. only a few years ago to be closer to the family plot in Hollywood. She and her mother even owned a flower shop on Miracle Mile at one point. Garland’s legacy can be found all in bits and pieces all over Southern California, from the Walk of Fame star on Vine to the handprints at Grauman’s to the palladium at Hollywood Forever cemetery. When it comes to her status as queer icon, it’s impossible to overrate her influence. 10.0As in.someone who embodied a kind of ecstatic relationship to suffering, Judy

was an instant attraction for gay audiences even before the word “gay” was mainstream. “Homosexuals tend to identify with suffering,” wrote “Princess Bride” author William Goldman after seeing Garland’s famous concert at the Palace,“they are a persecuted group and they understand suffering. And so does Garland. She's been through the fire and lived – all the drinking and divorcing, all the pills and all the men, all the poundage come and gone – brothers and sisters, she knows.”

Singer Rufus Wainwright has made no secret of his fondness for the queer icon. “My theory about ‘Judy and the Gays,’” he told Vanity Fair in 2011, “is that what made her attractive was not her beauty. She had this magnetism, but it had nothing to do with statuesque features. It was just about this really unusual personality.” That unusual personality is finally getting its due in the modern age, as the legacy of “Judy and the Gays” continues.

A personal overview from a trans activist and MSW candidate from USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work. Oftentimes, we take for granted the privilege of having a roof on our heads, a privilege that is disturbingly amplified, as we see the despair of others in need. Falling on the hands of homelessness does not discriminate the traditional ideas of genderism by any means, but when gender and sex is morphed into the shape of transgender identity; immediate basic needs, like shelter and social services are subject to uneven distribution among those in need. This is the situation that many transgender, gender-variant and intersex (TGI) homeless face daily, when looking for shelters in Los Angeles and nationwide. According to the National Transgender Discrimination Survey (TDS), one in three transgender people are turned away from sex-segregated shelters due to gender-based discrimination. The study also reveals that 42% of the ones admitted, are housed in unsuitable spaces for their gender identity, making them target of violence and sexual assaults.The National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) states, that one in five transgender individuals have experienced homelessness in their lives. Most homeless TGI cases are the result of family rejection, discrimination, and violence. Being transgender myself, makes me relate to this social issue deeply, as I recall being forced out of my home at age seventeen, on the basis of my gender identity; It was a difficult time, I found myself with no family protection, housing, or peer-support system. I survived the elements of the streets by being street-smart and numbing my emotions. My situation is not unique, as thousands of trans adolescents are banned from

families everyday.With the rise of equality for all, I felt it was the right time to get back to school and empower other individuals like myself, to get off the streets and avoid homelessness. Due to my activism in LGBTQ issues, USC endorsed my vision of social inclusion and allied me through an internship at Trans Latina Coalition (TLC).TLC is an organization that works around the clock, advocating for TGI rights, changing policies and providing direct social services, including homeless shelter referral, food and anti-violence programs. As an activist and an intern in such a

The bad news is... If your ex boyfriend wanted to really , really, really preserve the friendship with you he would have! (Not to say that he hasn't tried, he might have and it might have blown up in his face... or squirted... tee hee hee). Either way your ex boyfriend has determined that it was his path of least resistance to just go ahead and tell you what's up and take a step back instead of trying to fight the awkwardness any longer. The reality is I am not sure you are missing the friendship as it is NOW. You are missing the friendship that used to BE which cannot be created by just one member of the friendship party. Friendship is a TWO WAY STREET. In the best friendships both parties are in it to care about one another and share their stories, watch movies, gab on the phone. But one of the parties now for whatever reason is uncomfortable with this exchange which then changes the friendship it was into a new kind of relationship. Also, since you have already tried various options your only option now is to accept that fact the even if you DO Coerce someone into an interaction with you, it will be forced and weird. But lets take it back to what kind of friendships you want to have! I bet that you want friendships that are easy, fun, comfortable, energetic, supportive... If you were to CONVINCE someone to be friends with you or to take action to change this with this couple who has already pretty much decided that they don't want to engage... would that provide for you a friendship that gives you those things that you are looking for? I would say focus on the emotional qualities that you were getting from this friendship.. Think.. when you miss him... What is the feeling that you feel like you are missing? We all want whatever we want because we want to satisfy an emotional need... so think about...what did you used to feel when you were around them that you are not currently feeling right now? Support? Care? Then I would try to find those qualities in other aspects of your life... whether that be from other friends, or yourself or whatever!! Chefs for Seniors Dining Experience By Keldine Hull
Chefs for Seniors offers a unique and tailored dining experience for senior citizens in the comfort of their own home. The service, which provides in-house personal chefs and custom made meals, has grown to nearly 50 locations throughout the United States in less than three years. Licensed chefs undergo background checks and are fully insured. Sonia Vissani Lesko is a new franchise owner for the West Los Angeles area which currently serves seniors in Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades, Brentwood, Marina Del Rey and Venice. “I always loved to cook,” Lesko explained. “My background is in education. I was a preschool owner until last August, but I always had the passion for cooking. I’m Italian and growing up, we had very good food. After I sold my preschool, I started taking cooking classes. I decided to do something with it. I was looking for a purpose and wanted to follow my heart, cooking for people who appreciate the good food.” Her passion for food led her to Chefs for Seniors where she could use her love for food to help others. She was attracted to the business model and wanted to get involved. “The Chefs for Seniors idea is to provide good meals for seniors with the hope that they can live longer in their own home without moving to assisted living. Maybe they can’t cook for themselves anymore and they want something that is homemade for them.” The Chefs for Seniors service begins with a consultation where the chefs learn about their clients and the kinds of food they prefer. Leko continued, “Basically, it’s custom made food. First, we ask a lot of questions, what they like and dislike. When we cook, we cook specifically for them. Every week we decide the menu for the following week.” Personal chefs take note of specific di-

I cook four menus with side dishes, and we divide them into about 12 portions. They can microwave the food in the containers we provide. They can refrigerate some or put it in the freezer. from page 14 who left his home in a tiny seaside town in Australia to journey to New York, where he worked on Broadway, and on to Hollywood. Why is he so impactful on Hollywood history? His legacy in film, fashion and popular culture is undeniable. He designed 285 films in his career including Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, 42nd St, Oklahoma, Gypsy, Mame, Arsenic and Old Lace and Jezebel, and won three Academy Awards for An American in Paris, Les Girls and Some Like it Hot. He literally transformed women into movie stars: Bette Davis, Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner, Ingrid Bergman, Jane Fonda, Shirley Maclaine, Rita Hayworth — you name them! His designs ended up on high streets and women everywhere began to emulate the style of the film stars that he created. Why is this a play for the LGBTQ+ community? This is a story about a man who was often forced to “draw the curtains,” but who lived his life truthfully, even if that meant heartbreak, loneliness, sadness and disapproval. It puts the Hollywood system of forcing men and women into the closet under the spotlight. It reminds the audience how far we have come as an LGBTQ+ community, but also of the cost of that progress and how much more is still ahead of us. Plus it is camp as hell and who doesn’t love that?! What can attendees expect from the play? A great insight into the man and his time, as well as some revelations. Hopefully our audience
