DOWN WITH BUCK

UPDATE ON THE ED BUCK ARREST

Attorneys for the mother of Gemmel Moore, one of the men who overdosed on methamphetamine and died in the West Hollywood home of LGBTQ activist Ed Buck, have filed an amendment to a wrongful death lawsuit that targets Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey and Assistant Head Deputy Attorney Craig Hum for failing to properly investigate and charge Buck after Moore’s death in 2017. LaTisha Nixon, Moore’s mother, filed the lawsuit after Buck was arrested and charged in September when another alleged victim overdosed in Buck’s apartment. Nixon’s attorneys filed an amendment that included Lacey and Hum, who they said violated Moore’s civil rights in their “race-based refusal to prosecute Ed Buck.” Federal prosecutors announced last week that they have filed charges against Buck in connection with the 2017 death of Moore after previously arresting and charging him for the OD of the alleged third victim, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the

Central District of California. An affidavit outlines what U.S. District Attorney Nicola Hanna described as a “disturbing” pattern in which he said Buck would offer money and drugs in exchange for sex at his residence in the 1200 block of Laurel Avenue. The defendant is accused of providing the meth that resulted in the overdose of Moore, who was 26 when he died on July 27, 2017. His death was ruled an accidental methamphetamine overdose by the Los Angeles County coroner's office. The criminal complaint also alleges another man also died from a drug overdose at Buck’s apartment earlier this year, assumingly 55-year-old Timothy Dean who suffered from a fatal overdose at Buck’s residence early this year. His death was ruled an accident, and the cause was listed as methamphetamine and alcohol toxicity. Despite the second overdose death at his home, the political activist continued soliciting men in exchange for sex. According to KTLA5, personnel from the Los An@ROMANCEATTACKRH

geles County Sheriff ’s Department located a homeless man in a West Hollywood park several months ago who told them he had two encounters with Buck, including one where he lost consciousness after being injected with meth. The victim told investigators he heard about Buck from other men, who said they referred to Buck as “Dr. Kevorkian” because he was “well known for compensating male prostitutes with drug and money,” Hanna said, according to KTLA5. There are 10 other victims in the federal case, including nine who told investigators that Buck gave them narcotics or encouraged them to inject drugs as part of an agreed upon compensation for sexual services. The last victim was a 37-year-old man who overdosed at his apartment twice, once on Sept. 4 and again on Sept. 11, the federal complaint stated. The victim had been living with Buck until earlier this month, and alleged that he had been injected with meth daily, accord-

ing to Hanna. He overdosed twice, resulting in two hospitalizations, but survived. This story is developing. Check back at the PrideLA.com for an update.

We all know the story, or some version of it. In the 1940s, when L.A. wasn’t the friendliest town to gays, John “Barney” Anthony, owner of the WeHo institution Barney’s Beanery, put a rude, misspelled sign in his establishment. “Fagots stay out,” it read, belying Anthony’s clear predjudice, as well as his troubled relationship with the English language. Decades later, after Anthony bit the dust and West Hollywood became an official city with an official gay majority, the sign was removed from the beloved bar, making it a friendlier place for folks of all stripes to enjoy an order of Columbo’s favorite chili. In 2016, however, tentative plans were announced for a major architectural overhaul of the classic establishment, which Jim Morrison, Quentin Tarantino, and Clark Gable all considered a home away from home. have had more to do with WeHo citizens not being thrilled about waking up to the sounds of construction at 8 in the morning for years on end than with a genuine passion for the place, but the whole controversy begs the question: in a city so famous for creating its own queer utopia, how do we deal with the unpleasant parts of gay history that necessitated the creation of such a city? Do we need more plaques, more AIDS monuments, or living memorials like the Pulse remembrance project? However our relationship to the past looks now, whatever history we’re trying to preserve, one thing is clear enough: pain is always going to be a part of it, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

By Staff Writer Westsiders may sometimes think that gardening is only for those who live in suburbs or rural communities, but planting an urban garden can be easy. Whether you are planting a garden for yourself or your family, you can do your part to create a more sustainable and green future. These simple steps recommended by Arjan Stephens, executive vice president at Nature’s Path Organic Foods, can help you on your way to greening your thumb and the planet: No Space, No Problem: Not everyone has a

backyard, roof or balcony. To overcome this issue, start a container garden. While decorative pots can be lovely, they don’t improve the quality of your plants and can be expensive. Instead, you can use a large bucket from a garden store, which is a low-cost and effective option. Or upcycle containers not in use, such as crates, old toys or paint cans. Plant Selection: There are vegetable, flower and herb varieties that are easy to grow in urban spaces. When planning your garden, think about what to plant – shallow-rooted veggies, such as herbs, lettuce and radishes typically do

better in confined spaces. It Takes a Village: In addition to establishing your own garden, another way to plant is by getting involved with community gardens. Each year, Nature’s Path Food’s Gardens for Good program supports community gardens that make fresh, organic food more accessible in local neighborhoods. Three $15,000 grants are available to gardens that demonstrate high community support and a viable plan for the urban agriculture project. Plant Right: Potting your plants takes a few simple steps. Put some gravel in the bottom of your container to help with drainage and fill with soil, tamping it a bit. Leave 1 inch at the top for watering. Tamp the soil after the plants are in place and water gently. Portable Planters: An advantage of container gardens is that they allow you to easily move them in and out of the sun. If your plants seem to dry out in one window area, you can try different areas to adjust to what works best. Grow Up: Small spaces make it ideal to grow vertically, which means planting tall plants like squash, cucumbers, beans and tomatoes. Drain Gain: Whatever container you choose for your garden, remember drainage holes are essential. Without proper drainage, soil can become waterlogged and plants may die. The holes need to be large enough to allow excess water to drain out. Water Wise: Hand water every morning.

Once the plants are large and summer is hot, they will probably need watering in the evening, too. A little afternoon shade can keep them from drying out too quickly. Soil Smart: A common mistake urban gardeners make is not making sure their soil is good quality. While those made with pesticides promise great results, they are loaded with chemicals. Go for organic soil and grow well from the beginning. Have Fun: Gardening not only results in food or flowers, it is a great way to relieve stress, have fun and get in touch with nature. Just because you live in an apartment doesn’t mean you can’t experience the joy of eating what you grow. Grab your container, select your seeds and see how beautiful, nutritious and delicious your results could be. Find more details about Gardens for Good and urban gardening at naturespath.com.

The Greenest, Most Effective Carpet Cleaner Oxi Fresh comes to the Westside By Keldine Hull Santa Monica and West Los Angeles residents now have access to the greenest and arguably most-effective method of carpet cleaning with the expansion Oxi Fresh into the Westside area. For nearly 14 years, Oxi Fresh has led the carpet cleaning industry in providing environmentally friendly cleaning services that use the power of oxygen to clean rather than harsh chemicals. Through their innovative wall to wall carpet, area rugs, upholstery and tile cleaning techniques that utilize non-toxic agents, customers are provided with superior services safe for the family, pets and environment. Regular carpet cleanings play an important role in improving indoor air quality by removing trapped allergens and dust mites. “The environment and our impact on it is a concern for millions, if not billions, of people,” Oxi Fresh explained. “In order to combat waste and pollution, new green companies, including those who specialize in green carpet cleaning, have emerged who use efficient technology, low-energy solutions, and safe materials in order to reduce any negative effect on the environment. Oxi Fresh is one of those businesses.” Oxi Fresh products are specifically designed and tested for their effectiveness and impact on the environment. According to Oxi Fresh, one of their core products earned the EPA’s Safer Choice label. “Our method stands out from our competitors in the fact that our products/solutions are patented to be nontoxic and completely biodegradable,” Oxi Fresh explained. “After we are done with our services, very little residue gets left behind.” Their low moisture process uses approximately 5 percent of the water typical carpet cleaners use. Oxi Fresh explained, “Although fresh water is one of the most precious commodities on earth, it is often wasted right here in our country.

BEFORE

Steam cleaners, for example, require 40 or more gallons of water in order to clean a home. Water they mixed with chemicals used to extract dirt and oil inevitably gets dumped into the environment.” In comparison to other less experienced companies, Oxi Fresh uses about two to three gallons of water to clean a standard sized house. In addition to using less water, Oxi Fresh cleaning methods also require less energy. “Rather than relying on a vehicle to power our system, all Oxi Fresh needs is a wall outlet,” Oxi Fresh explained. “We also don’t need windows and doors to be left open for our cleaning, meaning any warm or cool air in your home stays there.” Good products and machines can only do so much to get carpets clean. Oxi Fresh continued, “To be the best carpet cleaner you have to have a method that capitalizes on both of those. That’s why our technicians are trained to go over the carpet from multiple angles, to pre-spray difficult

areas, and to do a hundred other tricks to help get your carpets truly clean.” Oxi Fresh machines not only get carpets clean; they also lift and rejuvenate the carpet pile rather than compressing it. Oxi Fresh added, “We have a saying, ‘If spots come back, so do we.’” Through consistently creating new and advanced products, Oxi Fresh provides customers with a more effective cleaning process compared to other carpet cleaning companies. Oxi Fresh explained, “Not only do the carpets dry quickly with our revolutionary, oxygenated cleaning system, but stains and dirt seem to vanish whenever we clean. Customers really like our deep, green carpet cleaning service, and the company Jonathan Barnett started in 2006 has now expanded to nearly every state and has won numerous awards from Entrepreneur Magazine, the Franchise Business Review, and the Franchise Times.” With locations in Tustin, Irvine, Orange Hills

AFTER

and Anaheim, Oxi Fresh opened another location in the Santa Monica area. Oxi Fresh explained, “Our vision was to become a multi-territory franchise. We've been very blessed and fortunate for the rapid success in Orange county. Now is good time to expand into LA. Santa Monica is a great starting point because of its beauty, richness in culture, and diversity.” In addition to providing green cleaning services, Oxi Fresh also requires that all their natural carpet cleaning franchises recycle bottles and packaging materials after use. Oxi Fresh explained, “When it comes to getting a natural carpet cleaning that is safe for both you and the environment, you’ll want to go with Oxi Fresh. Our green carpet cleaning is one of the best available, getting rid of stubborn stains while still remaining environmentally friendly.” For more information, call (866) 300-0484 or visit OxiFresh.com

Dr. Mao’s Wellness Living. By Staff Writer

While you are preparing for fall and a new school year, putting your home in order might be high on the to do list! The Chinese art of feng shui is based on the science of energy alignment in one’s living and workspaces to help optimize health, wealth, and happiness in one’s life. You can learn how to use it to empower yourself and unblock your vast potential. Here are a few tips to move you toward a happy home! Welcome The Positive The entrance to your home is very important in feng shui. If a road or path leads directly to the front door, trouble can come right in. Plant shrubs or meander the pathway in order to soften the impact of a straight line to the door. The entry hall should be spacious and bright so that chi can flow easily. If your hallway is small or dark, use bright lighting and decorations, and install mirrors to reflect as much light as possible. The entry should be light; dark ceilings signify a stormy sky. Clutter tangles the flow of chi energy and creates a stagnant environment. Keep your hallways and entry clear of clutter and tidy to encourage a health flow into your home. Remove Chaos From Closets Not only is feng shui fun to read about, it is also very practical.

One of the basic tenents of feng shui theory is to maintain an uncluttered home in order to have an uncluttered spirit. Most of our closets are probably just the opposite… wouldn’t it be great to clean them out? Closet organizers estimate that we wear about 20 percent of our wardrobes. In Chinese traditions, crowded closets impede the smooth flow of Chi and the worst offenders are unworn items that have been hanging around, no pun intended, sometimes for years. Of course we all have wonderful excuses for hanging on to old stuff: it was expensive, I’m going on a diet, I might wear it someday. To get started on a closet clean-up, wear your usual wardrobe for a month. Place these favorite items in one part of the closet, and then be absolutely brutal about weeding through the rest. Box up anything you can bear to part with and donate it to charity. When you donate, you win, the charity wins, and your closet will look great. Your energy will be lighter and by creating a bit of empty space, you have increased your energetic ability to attract prosperity. Grow Fruitful Finances A traditional Chinese symbol of wealth and prosperity is orange fruit. Consider planting kumquat or orange trees on your property, in pots on your balcony, or even a bowl of oranges on your dining room table. Images of fish, such as koi or carp, symbolize abundance and should be a welcome addition.

Photo: Courtesy.

Recently, a popular practice among feng shui aficionados is to have a money tree in your home. A money tree is an indoor bonsai tree from the Panchira aquatica species that measures one to two feet tall and has clusters of five-lobed leaves. Take good care of the bonsai so that it radiates healthy, vibrant, and prosperous energy.Of course, no matter how many money trees you possess,

your financial health will not improve if you do not also take care of it on a practical level. You must institute principles of good money management in your life, including setting budgets, living within your means, and paying yourself first. Paying yourself first means always putting aside money in your savings before you pay your bills.

the focus. Virtually every seat was filled by participants in the meeting room allocated for the workshop. A presentation given by one of Smart Gardening’s instructors included detailed information about how to obtain materials for composting as well as suggestions for building a better compost bin. Questions from the audience were interspersed throughout the discussion. According to senior instructor Pamela Yates, the benefits of vermicomposting – or, composting with worms – are manifold. Compost-enriched soil is not only nutrient-rich but drought-resistant, requiring less water. Additionally, a jar of “worm tea,” which is a homemade worm compost-enriched liquid substance, is anaerobic, meaning it can kill unwanted plants. “You’ll never have to buy another pesticide or fertilizer again,” said Yates. This workshop was one of many which are held regularly in virtually every region of L.A. County, most of which are beginning workshops, meant to introduce participants to composting as well as water-resistant and fire-resistant gardening. “If we get good attendance and good feedback we come back and do it again,” said Yates. Smart Gardening also includes an edu-

cational initiative, teaching some of their gardening practices to children and teens in school. Following this initiative, three students whose projects were spurred by Smart Gardening’s initiatives were awarded college scholarships. “The kids get into it. Worms become their pets,” “said Yates. DEAR AIDAN

DEAR AIDAN: Feeling Uninspired By My Own Ambition Dear Aidan, Currently I am in a dead end, low paying job that I am very unhappy at. I want to have a successful fantastic career, but I don't know where to start! I know that I need to have a plan mapped out so I can have a plan to know where I am going! I don't know that either. Everytime I think about my career I get more and more upset and I am not sure what to do!

Dear Working Gurl, First of all you are doing WAY BETTER than you think! I am sorry that you feel uncomfortable, but actually you should feel pretty good about the fact that you have desires to want to head in the direction of success! A lot of people have just simply given in to the dissatisfying mediocrity that is life and the fact that you have this strong desire to move toward what you want means that you are ALIVE and WELL and NOT SETTLING! You could in contrast: just eat cheetohs all day and decide that you ought to be "happy with what you got" HELL NO YOU WONT GO so good work in regards to that! Okay now – let's talk about success and what

that means to you. To me, success means doing what you LOVE DOING and making LOTS OF MONEY at it. I would not consider it a success for me to be making millions of dollars doing say... I don't know... accounting. I am unusually gifted with numbers but ugh to sit at a computer all day adding subtracting would drive me absolutely bananas. I mean I love bananas but too much of a good thing.. well.. nevermind. So since you are at the beginning stages, it's easy to watch say... "Shark Tank" and see successful people and try to emulate their success but trying to copy what they have created in their environment. The problem with doing that is that they are different from you! It's like this: Say I really respect Mark Cuban. He seems happy and he is married to a woman so I will just go marry a woman and live with her even though I am gay. Boy.Would that be a sexless marriage or what?! You might think that is an exaggeration but it is TRUE! Do you think that the people on that reality tv show about tattoos would be as successful as they are if they decided that they wanted to be successful so they tried to emulate their life around being just like Suzanne Somers and sell Thighmasters? NO!

My advice to you is this: Success will come as you follow the things you are most interested in and start paving a path in that direction vs looking at other people's successes, or even successes that you have DECIDED is the right path for you and then starting that journey. Do you see the difference? One is more focused on YOUR interest,YOUR experience and YOUR JOURNEY.The other is more focused on the END GOAL. WE NEVER GET TO THE END GOAL people! WE ALL DIE! So truly. I could kill myself to be a surgeon and make lots of money, but at the end of the day, that surgeons license means NOTHING because you can't die with it! So, pick something that you have an interest in and move in that direction! You might bounce around for a while as you explore the things that bring you the most amount of joy, but once you find that thing you LOVE you will know it, and it will be easy to navigate yourself ONE STEP AT A TIME.You can have a grand plan.. but truly.. I mean.. how many of THOSE have you see actually workout throughout someone's lifetime? When Same-sex Parents Divorce - Who Gets Custody of Frozen Embryos?

Tropics On Sale!

The miracles of modern medicine can offer the gift of life to many same-sex couples that want to start a family. But the success of cutting-edge technology can also lead to heartache if a couple goes through the process of freezing embryos, only to have the marriage deteriorate during the process. If one partner wants to donate the embryos but the other still wants to conceive the child, many legal issues can arise, complicating an already stressful situation. There are many ways to help people start a family, but when science and heartbreak collide, whose rights win out? To conceive a child, same-sex couples often turn to assisted reproductive technology (ART), which includes artificial insemination, egg donation, implantation of frozen embryos or the use of a surrogate

DIVORCE,

from page 16 have biological children. However, every state has different laws regarding embryos and people are wondering whose rights will win out when there are custody issues regarding these embryos. According to the Seattle University Law Review, couples have argued that they have ownership rights to frozen embryos due to their role in the creation or through their status as a legal parent. In the case of samesex couples, some choose to have either party submit eggs or sperm to create embryos. A donor then supplies the additional material, and the couple ends up with frozen embryos that could have either party's genetic makeup. When same-sex couples divorce, courts are now presented with the question as to how to establish parental rights for the embryos when only one partner may be the biological parent. This issue is further complicated because one person may want to keep the embryos to conceive a child, and the other may want them destroyed as a result of the divorce. These types of cases are taken to court, where a judge will

rule who has the right to claim the frozen embryos. We can expect to see a lot of similar cases emerge as ART becomes more successful and more widely used. One of the best ways to ensure that the rights of everyone involved are protected is to execute a legal agreement between the couple, outlining the wishes of both parties in the case of a divorce. Like a prenuptial agreement, it would set conditions for what would happen in the worst-case scenario. Medical providers can assist future parents by having them execute a plan before using ART. Taking the time and effort to clearly state the rights and obligations of all parties before going through the long process pays off in the long run. CREATING HOSPITALITY

The Woman Behind a Local Flavor

Having just launched two new restaurants in Venice, California, Create Hospitality Founder & CEO, Lauren Koeppe, is excited to share some cocktails. All of them, actually. Every one, on The Pier House menu, sits before me, condensation beginning to sweat on the side of chilled glasses, they beg me to dive in. The PH Margarita has a dash of blue butterfly pea flower that reacts with the lemon juice in the sour and turns the drink a delicate lilac color. I remembered reading somewhere that butterfly pea flower is good for your eyes, so I decided to start with this one. The cocktails are strong and delicious at The Pier House. A dangerous combination for a lightweight. Yes, I’m aware as an Australian born woman, I am letting the team down. Another healthy (in my opinion) choice cocktail on the menu, is the Amoxicillin. Its base is Tippling’s Ginger Beer Cordial. “You always want something delicious and refreshing with clean ingredients when you’re making a cocktail. For the most part, cocktail mixers are gross,” said Koeppe of her decision to team up with the Venice-based, boutique, beverage manufacturer. Koeppe first met Tippling’s founder, Vytas Juskys at Burning Man a few years ago. Another local connection was Venice artists, Patrick Marston and his husband, Michael Brunt. The two came on board to create one of their iconic vertical garden moss walls. The piece provides a blanket of green inside the sunset room, a previously under-utilized space that looks out across the boardwalk to the beach. Google commissioned one of Marston

and Brunt’s first moss walls nearly ten years ago and demand continues to grow. Another commission was for actress and singer Hayley Orrantia, best known for portraying Erica Goldberg on the ABC comedy series The Goldbergs. Orrantia featured a moss wall on the set of her ‘If I Don’t’ music video and later had the artists help her install it at her home. Marston said people always seem to find a calm within themselves around the walls. “It’s always wonderful to see people “Exhale” when around the vertical garden moss walls,” he said. Cocktail-wise, Marston and Brunt said it was difficult to recommend just one at The Pier House. Forced to choose, Marston suggests the Whiskey Punch and Brunt, the Apricot Swizzle. “It’s a bit sweeter. Just like him,” said Marston. Making genuine connections has been a vital ingredient to Koeppe’s success. Building a name for herself in the hospitality industry working at world-class restaurants, including The Standard on the New York City High Line, Hakkasan in the Fontainebleau Miami Beach, and Hinoki & the Bird here in Los Angeles. She has worked with Celebrity Chefs, Antonia Lofaso, who has the Venice restaurant Scopa, and Australian chef Curtis Stone. “It is never hustling. It is about connecting,” Koeppe said. The Pier House and Cartolina’s General Manager, Patrick Hotchkiss is a connection. Koeppe worked with him at Hinoki and the Bird. Even the Venice neighborhood plays a part in the collaboration, with Koeppe taking time out to recharge by exploring local spots with her partner Page and their husky. Koeppe’s life and career haven’t always

followed an upward trajectory. Growing up in Pacific Palisades, Koeppe spent her entire childhood dancing. She went so far as to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Colorado Boulder, majoring in modern dance. However, she didn’t enjoy the ruthless competitiveness of auditions. Hospitality gave her everything she loved about dancing. “It’s like putting on a show every night. You prepare the books and make sure everything is ready for everybody to be seated. It’s almost like you’re choreographing everything. Then, the guests start to come in, and you’ve got to facilitate the evening for them. You know? Every night is different,” she said. A year into her biggest career opportunity, working in Miami at the Fontainebleau, Koeppe found out her father had leukemia. “I told my boss that day, ‘I’m sorry I have to leave.’” Koeppe dropped everything to join her family to be by her father’s side at a hospital in New York. “He was everything to me,” she said. After her father passed away, Koeppe, her mother, and sister returned to Los Angeles with the rest of her family. Getting back into the swing of things career-wise took time. However, Koeppe was not too proud to have to prove herself all over again, taking a position for which she was, arguably, overqualified. The ups and down of life, according to Koeppe, “are always an opportunity to learn.” Koeppe’s energy is calm, yet powerful. Like a hawk gliding high above ready to dive with precision into the smaller details. Like, selecting plates with a perfect mix of patterns and cutlery that has a worn look, all chosen to give the new restaurant a feeling it has been in Venice for years. She juggles work and life, in the thick of the chaos of pulling together a restaurant project, thanks to the team she has built up

over the years. “So, it’s not just me. Being a good director is about leading people and pushing them to pull together the product or whatever material you need from them and making it the best. So, you’re working collectively,” Koeppe said. And then, it is essential to get away said Koeppe, “Get out and travel, explore. Allow yourself the time to take in new information. If you’re only in the grind, in the grind, then you’re not receptive to new information.” Even if you can only go as far as exploring your own city Koeppe said discovering something new can be inspiring. Cheers to that! Try the cocktails and everything else that is delicious at The Pier House 7 West Washington Blvd., Venice, CA. Carolina is next door.
