LOUD AND PROUD
Fiscal Success of LA Pride 2019 This year’s LA Pride festival generated almost $75 million in economic output for greater Los Angeles.
On Tuesday, December 10, Christopher Street West, the nonprofit behind the annual LA Pride Festival and Parade, announced the economic impact this year’s festivities had on the surrounding area. The Parade and Festival generated $74.7 million in economic output and $42.2 million in direct expenditure in LA County. “LA Pride has been a voice for the LGBTQ+ community in the greater Los Angeles area for nearly 50 years, and we’re proud of the positive impact that the LA Pride Parade and Festival has on our local economy,” CSW board President Estevan Montemayor said. “With our partners from the Cities of West Hollywood and Los Angeles, JJ|LA and beyond, we look forward to providing diverse experiences for the community and bringing even more people into the County of Los Angeles for our 50th anniversary celebration next year.” CSW worked with Beacon Economics, an independent research and consulting firm, on the economic report. Based on expenditure
data from organizer CSW and a survey of event attendees, exhibitors and producers, the report details how the three-day event directly impacted the City of West Hollywood, the City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles County. Beacon Economics considered spending by all participants at the 2019 event including attendees, CSW, exhibitors and producers. Just over half of ticket buyers being from Los

Angeles County, 31 percent were from outside Southern California and the remainder being from elsewhere in Southern California. Of the ticket buyers, nearly 40 percent had a bachelor’s degree or higher and over 40 percent ranged between the ages of 25-34. The City of Los Angeles was the most popular location for accommodations, accounting for 40 percent of accommodations, while West Hollywood
accounted for 18 percent of accommodations. Additionally, CSW data showed that over 85 percent of the exhibitors and producers came from Los Angeles and fewer than 15 percent from outside the area. “Beyond being a world-famous celebration of the resilience of LA's LGBTQ+ community, the economic and fiscal impacts that the LA Pride Parade and Festival have on both the city and county are undeniable,” said Adam J. Fowler, Director of Research at Beacon Economics. “The event’s ability to generate jobs, labor income, and tax revenue at the level it does is a testament to its success, as well as to the diversity of the local population." Key findings show that the 2019 LA Pride Festival and Parade: • Increased economic output in Los Angeles County by $74.7 million of which $27.7 million was concentrated in West Hollywood and $18.2 million in the City of Los Angeles • Increased labor income for workers in Los Angeles County by $33.1 million, including $14.7 million in West Hollywood and $7.4 in the City of Los Angeles • Supported the annual equivalent of 830 jobs in LA County, including 397 in West Hollywood and 191 in the City of Los Angeles • Estimated $2.5 million in tax revenue generated in LA County, including $896,100 in West Hollywood and $332,800 in the City of Los Angeles

Merriam-Webster's 2019 California Top Marks in Equality Word of the Year: “They” CA’s Legislative Scorecard What are your pronouns? Merriam-Webster cares. On Tuesday. December 10 Merriam-Webster announced that the 2019 Word of the Year is “they.” “English famously lacks a gender-neutral singular pronoun to correspond neatly with singular pronouns like everyone or someone, and as a consequence they has been used for this purpose for over 600 years,” the Merriam-Webster website states. The website also states that looking up the word “they” increased by 313% this year. This reflects the fact that even a “basic” term – like a pronoun – can rise to the top of data, whether through news event-driven searches or to simply keep up with shifting language. The word “they” has increasingly been used to refer to one person whose gender identity is nonbinary. The usage is increasingly common in published, edited text, as well as
California earned top marks in Equality California’s recently released annual state legislative scorecard for 2019
on social media and in daily personal interactions between English speakers. “There's no doubt that its use is established in the English language, which is why it was added to the Merriam-Webster.com dictionary this past September,” the website states. Other top searched words include: quid pro quo, impeach, crawdad, egregious and clemency.
Equality California, the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ civil rights organization, demonstrating support in the California Legislature for LGBTQ civil rights and social justice. Sixty-one of the 80 members — including two Republicans — received perfect scores in the Assembly. Twenty-six out of 40 senators earned perfect marks, too. Scores were based on six floor votes and a committee vote in the Assembly, and eleven floor votes in the Senate. Governor Gavin Newsom also scored 100
percent in his first year in office. He signed all five bills sponsored by Equality California that reached his desk. Notably, this included historic legislation authored by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-San Diego) to allow pharmacists to furnish life-saving HIV prevention medication without a doctor’s prescription. The bill, SB159, will take effect January 1, 2020. “While the Trump-Pence Administration launches new anti-LGBTQ attacks on a near-daily basis, we’re continuing to work with our partners in the legislature and Governor Newsom to make California a beacon of hope to LGBTQ people around the world,” Equality California Executive Director Rick Zbur said in a press statement. “Civil rights and social justice are nonpartisan and nonnegotiable in California, and voters reward pro-equality legislators every two years for their support. President Trump and Senator Mitch ‘Grim Reaper’ McConnell should take note.”

How the Gay Men’s Chorus of L.A. Keeps Going
Boost Your Member Benefit!
The queer singing institution prepares for its 40th season
In February of this year, the Gay Men’s Chorus of L.A., one of the city’s most stalwart institutions, lost its oldest member. Dick Sommers had one of the most astounding queer resumes of any Angeleno: to read it feels like checking off a list of every influential gay organization of the past 50 years. Sommers was a member of the Gay Men’s Medicine Circle, the founder of a Pat Rocco fan club, and an organizer and co-founder of the first-ever L.A. Pride in 1970. He was there when Troy Perry and Harry Hay started to create an infrastructure for LGBTQ+ Angelenos in the 1950s and 60s in the form of the Mattachine Society. He was also there when the Gay Men’s Chorus started up in 1979. Sommers wasn’t alone. The Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles is one of the oldest institutions in the city created by and for LGBTQ+ citizens. When the choir started up, AIDS hadn’t gotten a chance to wipe out a huge chunk of the city’s queer population, along with its bathhouses, gay clubs, and organizations. In 1979, there could have been nothing more hopeful than the idea of a bunch of gay men getting together to sing their hearts out. The chorus has survived a plague, budget problems, and numerous other obstacles to its survival. It has still managed to see in its 40th season this year. And despite facing some serious monetary setbacks, the appointment of a brand new Music Director and Conductor in USC Thornton Alumnus Ernest Harrison is giving members and fans of the 40-year-old institution new hope for its continued life on the stage. When an L.A.Times article called attention to the chorus’s severe money and reputation problems in April, things weren’t looking great, especially with the GMCLA’s 40th anniversary approaching and the threat of insolvency looming overhead. After recent sexual misconduct allegations well as the financial mismanagement of earlier years, it was uncertain whether or not the institution could stay in business without filing for bankruptcy. Chairman Steve Holzer, in the same L.A. Times article, said that the organization was “struggling to stay alive.” Now, at the end of 2019 and with the chorus preparing for its Holiday Spectacular show, it looks like GMCLA will keep fighting for at least another season.

ROUND HOLE SQUARE PEG 4 is a juried photography exhibition and competition conceived to discover a new LGBTQ visual culture for the 21st century. It focuses on transgender awareness, people of color and underrepresented minorities in this biennial exhibition. “The world is changing for LGBTQ people,” Curated by director Phil Tarley said.“In 2019, dark Trumpian clouds are forming and threatening to roll back hard-won civil rights. The religious right is ramping up its homophobic and transphobic attacks. By showing positive, sincere images that reflect our true queer lives, we can stay visible in a world that wants us to disappear.” The exhibition is the only queer presentation at major art fairs. Round Hole Square Peg first debuted at Photo LA in 2013. Curated by director Phil Tarley and associate curator Ruben Esparza, the exhibition is judged by a panel of five prominent jurors, and the director of Photo LA. “As Stonewall 50 passes, LGBTQ persecution intensifies in Trump’s America,” a press release states.“Art exhibitions enable LGBTQ photographers to voice their activism, proclaim their visibility and create a new wave of queer art and soul.”
Having a strong presence in front of a large audience, the exhibition aims to help the LGBTQ community defy and resist negative stereotypes. After Photo LA 2020, from January 30—February 2, 2020, the exhibition will move to the City of West Hollywood’s gallery for a four-week run. Opening night in West Hollywood will feature a celebrity-driven, live art auction to benefit The Trevor Project: the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ youth and the ONE Archives Foundation: a vital resource for showcasing the trailblazing history and rich culture of LGBTQ communities through exhibitions that pull from the largest collection of LGBTQ archival materials in the world. The West Hollywood exhibition will run from February 8 – March 4, 2020. Round Hole Square Peg is meant to tackle the paradigm of 21st LGBT visibility—to contrast the white male-centric presentation of the Mizer-Tom of Finland show. RHPS’s exhibition manifesto tackles the demanded visibility of female, people of color, and transgender LGBT identifiers. Participating artist Stuart Sandford feels that his work is innately queer. “The queerness of my work, other than simply being produced by a self-identifying gay man,
comes from the intention to question the prevailing norm,” he says.“The taboo, the (gay) male gaze on the (gay) male body in an unbridled manner, something once lost and now reclaimed. But will this, or any art, help save us in 2020? No, of course not, the artist’s role is to ask questions and provoke debate.” RHSP Competition Judge Paul Bridgewater said that queer identity is not simply a sexual one. “Queer artists have a perspective and an experience to contribute to society that is wholly our own and it’s a rich and worldly one,” Bridgewater
said. “Having been marginalized and alienated for so long has helped us develop a unique view of self-worth, self-image, spirituality, and companionship. We can look at the world and mirror it back to the human condition with insight, style, glamour, and fun.” Check out some of the photography for the 2020 Exhibition, or photos from the Past Exhibitions. GIVE IT A WATCH?
“THE L WORD: GENERATION Q” IS A PANDERING MESS
It’s strange to look back across a period of ten years and realize how much you’ve changed. Things that felt fresh and daring to you once now expose themselves as mediocre and cringe-worthy, while work you dismissed out of hand takes on new depth.Age changes a lot, but the perspective that comes with it is the real kicker.Thinking about who you were ten years ago, along with what the world looked like ten years ago, can be sobering, depressing, and fairly bleak. But only in light of what’s happening today. In the early ‘oughts, a time of relative social and political innocence, a show existed that felt incredibly real, raw, and explosive even in its campiness. If viewers didn’t take “The L Word” seriously as a slice of lesbian life, we took it seriously as a kind of signpost of progress. The fact that women were kissing, touching, and existing in front of the camera independently of the male gaze felt, and was, groundbreaking. It didn’t matter that the show was a glorified soap, full of thinly-sketched characters and improbable situations. It was what we needed, over-the-topness be damned. We greedily sucked up every overwrought, cliche-ridden episode. We even endured Max the angry transsexual. That was how big the cultural need was for a show that was actually made for and about queer people.
Today, we’re a long way off from 2004 and its promise of a better world. Bush has been out of office for awhile, though his war rages on. Obama, the great hope of the 21st century, has come and gone.We live in a world that can’t count on a single person, show, or ideology to fix all our problems. In short, we’re doomed, and we know it.And that’s kind of what “The L Word: Generation Q” is about. Not on the face of it, of course. At first glance, “The L Word” reboot doesn’t really look like a soul-sucking echo of a once earth-shaking concept. It doesn’t look like everything that’s wrong and lost and unfixable about the present and the future. It just looks like a lot of fierce women sporting Wildfang and armpit hair. It looks like a body-positive ad for a new feminist underwear line. It looks like everything else looks on Instagram: kind of pretty and soulless and sad, the way advertisers make it look when they want to sell us something. At the center of the new “The L Word” are a few old characters and a mix of new ones. We’ve got Bette Porter, the art world firebrand now divorced from “Mama T” Tina Kennard and running for public office.Alice Piezecki, the gossip columnist-turned-talk show host now reluctantly locked into motherhood, and Shane McCutcheon,
the rakish hairstylist with a heart of gold (she’s rich now, and it’s not clear why.) Everybody else is freshly recruited, diverse, and fairly under-drawn. As in the old “The L Word,” everybody lives in an apartment that they definitely can’t afford, and everybody’s job seems fake. What we’re looking at is not the real L.A., full of sad queers and hustlers and miserable, exhausted P.A.s. It sparkles and looks passive and pretty, just like the cast. Watching this world unfold, an eerie, warped mirror of 2004, it reminds you of the crucial emptiness that always comes out of trying recreate a perfect--or nearly perfect--thing.The original “The L Word” had bite, at least. It was so ridiculous, so
self-consciously itself, so willing to be about what it was about, that you couldn’t help but love it. This iteration, with its empty, Sorkinized speeches about homelessness and the opioid crisis, its glittering apartments, and its exquisitely quirky, desperately expensive fashion, doesn’t know what it’s about at all. We’re in a post-queer world. It’s not enough to be a show about lesbians anymore. Instead, we have to put up with shows that attempt to cover every aspect of the queer experience, losing any semblance of truthfulness or heart in the process. “Generation Q” may not be “The L Word” reboot we wanted, but it’s the one we deserve.
