REDESIGNING THE RAINBOW WeHo Calls On Artists to Submit for Pride 2019.

Unpack the easels, dust off the crayons, and wet those watercolors because West Hollywood wants artists to submit designs to use as the poster for next year’s One City One Pride Arts Festival. The One City One Pride Arts Festival runs for 40-days, beginning on Harvey Milk Day on May 22 and going until the end of June, which is LGBTQ+ Pride Month in L.A. The city goes all out for the celebration, hosting public events and exhibits including film screenings, literary events, theater, dance, music, and art installations. The festival centers around a different theme each year. Previous themes include “Sacred and the Profane” (2013), “I Do” (2014), “WeHo@30, Life@30” (2015), “Into the Streets” (2016), “Go West” (2017), and most recently, “I Remember” (2018), which just wrapped up over a week ago. This year’s theme seizes on the popular LGBTQ rights refrain “Love is Love.” In an announcement, the city foregrounded the current political climate as the reason behind the theme. “In these times when there is so much hate in the world,” the post said, “what better way to bring us all together than to celebrate our universal bond of love.” The winning submission will be featured across the city and as the cover of the festival’s main booklet. The winning artist will also receive a $600 prize. The current iteration of the Pride Festival is a far cry from how it began. The first L.A. Pride Parade – and the first Pride Parade ever – was held to commemorate the one year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, the 1969 event that set off the modern LGBTQ movement. Facing stiff opposition from the Los Angeles Police Department and its outwardly homophobic chief, Ed Davis, the marchers sought help from the American Civil Liberties Union, who successfully sued the city for the right to march. When organizers included a festival in 1974, it was little more than a street fair, just occupying the parking lot of a mini-mall on Sunset Boulevard. Today, the festival spans 40 days and the parade has ballooned into a stampede of pageantry and celebration. This year’s festival drew unprecedented crowds and sold out tickets for the first time in the event’s histo-

ry. According to the organizers, the nonprofit Christopher Street West, around 40,000 people attended the ticketed events. The high turnout even surprised organizers, who were forced to turn away ticketed attendees. The most recent Pride Arts Festival centered around the theme “I Remember,” an explicit nod to the contributions and sacrifices of the past. The festival kicked off with a staged reading of the play by Patricia Loughrey, Dear Harvey. The event was a turducken (a dish consisting of a chicken inside of a duck inside of a turkey) of LGBTQ history and activism. The play itself recounts the life of activist and politician Harvey Milk through the words of the people who knew him – words that were read by current activists and politicians like trans activist Mariana Marroquin and West Hollywood Mayor John J. Duran. The art contest guidelines allow ample room for creativity. For starters, the piece must incorporate the theme “Love Is Love.” It also must include, or leave space for, the City of West Hollywood logo, the WeHo arts logo, and the One City One Pride logo. Although not required, the organizers suggest that “ideal submissions will have a neutral background of a single color that is either dark or light so that readable text can be placed over it.” For more information, to see past examples, and to submit your art, visit the City of West Hollywood’s website.

L.A.’s Affordable Housing of the Future

West Hollywood Group Gets Funding for a New Housing Complex.

In an effort to combat soaring rents and gentrification, the California Strategic Growth Council (SGC) has awarded more than $16 million in funding to the West Hollywood Community Housing Corporation (WHCHC) to build affordable housing for low-income residents. The latest project will appear on Pico Boulevard, east of Vermont Avenue, and will include 92 units of affordable housing and social services offices. The West Hollywood Community Housing Corporation is a nonprofit housing development corporation founded in 1989 to construct new apartments and renovate old buildings to “provide affordable housing to lower-and-fixed-income people envi-

ronmentally sustainable materials, systems and appliances that protect the environment.” Over its 22-year history, WHCHC has developed 17 apartment complexes, 14 of which are in the City of West Hollywood. The development on Pico, called the Eden Elms, is meant to provide residents with an affordable living situation near to the places of work. Not only will this defray the cost of living and the burden of transportation, but it will also reduce the city’s carbon footprint. The $16.6 million awarded to WHCHC not only goes to the construction of Eden Elms, but also to repair and construct accessible walkways that would link the housing to public transportation. “By integrating affordable homes and sustainable transportation, the Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities program makes it easier for residents to drive less by making sure housing, jobs and key destinations are accessible by walking, biking and transit,” according to a statement

The California Strategic Growth Council has pursued an agenda of fighting climate change and addressing the housing crisis since it was created in 2008 by the state of California. According to SGC, they have invested over $775 million in projects that “that strengthen the economy, ensure social equity, and enhance environmental stewardship across the state.” “With over $700 million in grants for housing and transportation projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the Strategic Growth Council is helping make a dif-

A STATE DIVIDED?

⚫ BY ANNETTE SEMERDJIAN

THE THREE CALIFORNIAS

Photo: Twitter.

Silicon Valley billionaire Tim Draper fought for a ballot proposal that would split one state into three voting districts.

How California’s Split Could Affect the LGBTQ+ Community. California is one of the largest states in the U.S. It’s also one of the most diverse, with life in many parts of the state varying vastly from the preconception of what it means to be a Californian. From the beaches of San Diego to the farmlands of Fresno to the suburbs of Humboldt, California is not solely defined by its mega cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco. For the LGBTQ+ community, those differences are highlighted in L.A. and the Bay Area as some of the best places to live for queer people. This upcoming November election will be a particularly crucial one for Californians as they decide whether the state should no longer operate as one and be split into three jurisdictions: California, Northern California and Southern California. This division is split in a strategic way that does not encompass drawing lines between northern, central and southern California.Three of the major cities in the largest blue state in the nation would have a place in their own divided California state. San Diego would be in Southern California, Los Angeles in California and San Francisco in Northern California. That means people living slightly out of L.A. county lines, where rent is more affordable, would then reside in another state entirely – that state of Southern California would also be the most conservative of the three, where over 40 percent of residents voted for Trump in the recent election, according to The Sacramento Bee. The split would also even out Northern California with counties such as Santa Cruz and San Francisco that vote in the largest numbers for Democrats together with counties like Modoc that garner the highest percentage of Republican votes in California each election. What that could potentially result in is Northern and Southern California having more political tension as the prospect of conservative votes taking over the new jurisdiction’s legislation becomes more feasible within much smaller states. From the three split states, California would be the most liberal with Los Angeles, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, San Benito and Ventura counties that all vote Democrat. This new cultural structure could result in more people moving into California and chang-

ing the other divided states into a more conservative position. The fight for California’s sparse water supply and how the new states would suffer in receiving fewer resources would also be a major issue of which the economic and environmental impacts could shift the states’ populations even more. The new dynamic can almost guarantee a change of population, one which may not be in the favor of minorities such as LGBTQ+ people who are already fighting to preserve rights against the Trump Administration. In the macro sense, the split would also take away California’s power to bring the most votes for Democrats every election as the state with the largest number of electoral votes. Thus, reversing the marriage equality act per the Trump Administration’s plans could become a more achievable prospect, especially with the future of democratic votes in the divided states being uncertain. In the history of the U.S., the act of dividing a state occurred last during the civil war with the secession of West Virginia from the Confederate state of Virginia. The new plan to split California will be on the ballot after years of effort by Silicon Valley billionaire Tim Draper, garnering over 400,000 signatures deemed valid by election officials. His plan failed to qualify on the 2016 ballot with not enough valid signatures in his 2014 proposal, which initially planned to split California into six parts – which would have left much poorer parts of California to fend for their own while the richer parts prospered. This was the entrepreneur's only real involvement with politics and he also remains as an unaffiliated voter. “Three states will get us better infrastructure, better education and lower taxes,” said Draper to the Los Angeles Times. “Vast parts of California are poorly served by a representative government dominated by a large number of elected representatives from a small part of our state, both geographically and economically.” Yet Draper’s proposal that he has been working toward for years would not be as beneficial to the LGBTQ+ community as well as the average California voter since smaller states do not guarantee better functioning legislation. It is also a plan that does not consider the repercussions of such a division and does not supply a proper plan to execute three equally prosperous states, which begs the question of whether the intention of this proposal was ever in favor of serving all the communities within the state.

DINING AL FRESCO Discover the best outdoor eats on the Westside. By Charles Trepany Outdoor dining has become as much a part of summer in Los Angeles as going to the beach on the Fourth of July. From eating under the stars

to making new friends, here are four Westside restaurants, each with their own take on the outdoor dining experience.

Community is On the Menu At Plant Food + Wine’s outdoor patio in Venice, general manager Justin Pineiro said customers can enjoy “a fairy-like environment,” with small lights hanging from trees, a garden where a large portion of the restaurant’s ingredients are grown and a large table for communal seating. “The outdoor patio is definitely like a little

magical oasis,” Pineiro said. Pineiro said the restaurant’s patio is also a great place to make friends, especially at the communal table. “Dining outside is just an experience that makes everybody feel like they’re at home,” he said. “We get a lot of people that just connect outside. If they haven’t met, it just sets the stage for everybody to feel welcome and feel like they’re all dining together, but also in their own individual experience at the same time.” According to Pineiro, the best summer drinks are the Havana Crush and seasonal Sangria. Pineiro said the patio is one of the most relaxing places to sit, day or night. “It’s a little hidden gem. It makes you feel like you’re in a completely different place and at the same time enjoying everything that’s magical that L.A. has to offer.” Address: 1009 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice, CA 90291 Website: www.matthewkenneycuisine.com/ plant-food-wine-venice Dinner Under the Stars A summer brunch special of rosé and toast, plus a patio with a retractable roof, make the outdoor dining experience at Baltaire Restaurant in Brentwood perfect for any weather, said Brandon Guidry, the restaurant’s general manager. “The terrace itself has these lovely, dim, glowing light fixtures and candle features on the table,” he said. “The ambience out there is just absolutely perfect.” The restaurant’s outdoor seating, which includes a lounge area with a fireplace, is covered

Indulging Palates at Tam O’ Shanter’s

For over 90 years, Lawry’s has delighted diners throughout the country with their renowned prime rib and signature seasoned salt. Atwater Village’s Tam O’Shanter is one of L.A.’s longest-standing restaurants and the original location of Lawry’s. Seventy years after closing its historic patio, made famous by Walt Disney and some of the original Disney animators, a freshly renovated patio breathes new life into the neighborhood gem, attracting new and regular customers alike. General Manager John Lindquist runs the day to day operations at Tam O’Shanter, which honors its indelible place in L.A. history. “You step into our restaurant, and you take a step back in time,” Lindquist explains. “We’ve got

“STAR CATERER TO THE STARS” – LA Times “BEST WEDDING & EVENT SPACE” – BizBash

pictures of Walt Disney from the 1940’s and 1950’s on the wall here because he was a regular. We have his specific table in the restaurant, table number 31, where he sat every day during lunch. His studio was right near us on Hyperion at the time. It’s an interesting piece of L.A. history.” Originally established in 1922 as a roadside stand, Tam O’Shanter has been a part of the community for nearly a century. “You can’t build a 96-year-old business if you don’t have long term guests,” Lindquist continues. “I meet guests who come up and tell me, ‘I’ve been coming here longer than you’ve been alive!’ It’s great to hear that they’ve got a tradition of coming to a restaurant like this, and we’re able

Let

to still provide that for them. We just had a customer celebrate her 96th birthday here. She’s been coming here for 90 years.” Not only known for its history and prime rib, Tam O’Shanter offers an impressive assortment of scotch. “We have one of the largest collections in California, if not the U.S.,” Lindquist explains. “We’ve got a great wall of scotch which is filled with 200 out of the close to 400 bottles that we have in our collection, some of which you can’t find in the U.S. at all. We have it here for our guests to enjoy and learn a little bit about if they’re not already familiar.” The unveiling of the new patio earlier this year adds another layer to Tam O’Shanter’s unique dining experience and offers guests

something that few restaurants in that area offer. “We’re in a part of the neighborhood where there are not many restaurants that offer outside dining in our general vicinity,” Lindquist continues. “Now when you drive up, you’re greeted with these English gardens and beautiful outdoor fireplace on our patio where we have 50 seats to serve a full menu. Every night we get people coming up with their dogs or coming up to share a cocktail with their friends. It’s just a great addition to the neighborhood to bring that outdoor dining space back which is key in California.” Tam O’Shanter is an important cornerstone of that one of a kind L.A. dining experience and hopes to continue indulging palates for decades to come.

The special, which first began last year, will be available every weekend for the rest of the summer. Guidry said the toasts and rosé wines are perfect to enjoy on the patio. “To have that experience of eating a lighter fare like the toasts, having the rosés which are great for warm weather, and the ambience of the patio would just be a fantastic combination,” Guidry said. Complete with fire torches, a fireplace and a fish pond, the outdoor seating at Wilshire is a staple of the restaurant. “Outdoor seating is probably 65 to 70 percent of our restaurant, and it’s certainly the most in demand area of the restaurant, as a far as diners are concerned,” Bradley said. “If you look in our reservation books, you’ll see every single person has requested outside seating.” The outdoor seating also includes a loft space called the Sea Garden Lounge that overlooks the lower patio. Bradley said the patios at Wilshire are a favorite for locals. “We have guests who’ve been coming here for 13 years that have their particular table and who come here specifically because they can sit outside and enjoy our beautiful patio,” she said. Bradley said patrons can always count on Wilshire to have a variety of menu options, as they switch out items on their menu on an almost weekly basis to include the freshest ingredients

Wilshire will offer a new cocktail menu of summer beverages this week as well as live acoustic music on the patio every Sunday brunch. “Our Sunday brunch is really becoming something special, and it’s large part due to that outdoor patio area,” Bradley said. “It’s a great place for an outdoor patio brunch.” Address: 2454 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 90403 Website: www.wilshirerestaurant.com An Authentic Hideaway At Café Chez Marie in Century City, customers can enjoy a diverse menu of authentic French, Moroccan and American cuisine on a secluded outdoor patio resembling that of a Parisian café. “You feel that you are in Paris, because of the French feel we have created. Everything we have is authentic,” said Marie Saltzman, who owns the restaurant with her husband, Steve. “It’s like Paris, except instead of having noises and cars, you have gardens, and flowers, and trees, and hydrangeas and roses.” Founded almost 19 years ago, Café Chez Marie is located in what used to be an early 20th century French Revival Cottage, and the building has been designated a Los Angeles City Cultural Historical Monument for over 30 years. Saltzman said the restaurant’s cultural authenticity makes it special. “There is no B.S.,” Saltzman said. “Everything is authentic.” Saltzman said customers can enjoy the restaurant’s outdoor patio any time of the day for a quick getaway. “It’s so quiet and peaceful,” she said. “You feel like you are not in the middle of the city. MAKE YOUR SUMMER SWEETER WITH FRESH CHERRY RECIPES CHERRY LAVENDER SPRITZER Servings: 6 4 2 3 2 6 6

cups pitted and halved Northwest sweet cherries cups water tablespoons lavender tablespoons sugar Northwest sweet cherries with stems sprigs lavender blossoms

In small saucepan, combine cherries, water, lavender and sugar. Heat mixture until it begins to boil. Remove from heat and allow mixture to cool completely. Strain and reserve liquid. For each drink, combine 4 ounces cherry-lavender mixture and 4 ounces crushed ice in tall 12-ounce cocktail glass; top each with club soda. Garnish each drink with one cherry with stem and one sprig lavender blossoms. Variation: To make alcoholic version, shake or stir strained cherry-lavender mixture and ice with 9 ounces vodka. Strain into 8-ounce martini glasses, top each with club soda and garnish each with one cherry with stem and one sprig lavender blossoms.

ROASTED CHERRY SAUCE Makes: 1 cup

2 cups pitted Northwest sweet cherries 2/3 cup sugar 2 teaspoons cornstarch 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon black pepper Heat oven to 400 F. On foil-lined baking sheet, combine cherries, sugar, cornstarch, salt and black pepper; toss to mix. Place in oven and roast until cherries start to release juices and become soft, about 10 minutes. Cool before serving.

Summer and cherries seem to go hand-in-hand, and using fresh fruits can help boost seasonal food and drink recipes. Whether you use them as a snack, as a special ingredient in recipes or to inspire new dishes, Northwest-grown sweet cherries are one delightful way to celebrate the summer season. Many grocery store shelves are full of these sweet, seasonal treats. Ripened on the tree and generally harvested, packed and ready for sale within just one day, it can be difficult to find a fresher summer fruit. Cherry recipes can be enjoyed outside the summer months, too – simply rinse, pack and freeze an extra bag or two of cherries to harness the sweet flavor and health benefits in your appetizers, desserts and sweet or savory sauces throughout the year. Impress your guests this summer with this icecold Cherry Lavender Spritzer. Or try Roasted Cherry Sauce for an accompaniment to your favorite barbecued meat, as an ice cream topper or paired with a cheese plate; it’s one way to have everyone asking for more.

YOU BETTER ART, BITCH Two Upcoming Exhibitions Feature LGBTQ+ Themes.

Feeling a little uncultured lately? A bit like your frontal lobe has been sawed off by Netflix forcing you to binge watch? Look no further than the upcoming art exhibits

right in your own backyard. Like the exhibition and screening of Colin Campbell and Lisa Steele’s work at the ONE Gallery in West Hollywood (626 N. Robertson Boulevard). Or the solo exhibition from Philadelphia-based artist Jonathan Lyndon Chase at Kohn Gallery (1227 N. Highland Avenue). For those unfamiliar with the ahead-ofits time work of Canadian Colin Campbell and Canadian by proxy Lisa Steele, it’s

time to start getting familiar. Before people were just calling themselves “video artists” because of their Instagram, Campbell and Steele were actually creating progressive work by culling personas and material from their engagement with the strange landscape that is (or rather, was) Los Angeles. Viewing themselves as “anthropologists studying a very strange culture through its everyday media and manifestations,” the duo would take on roles that flirted freely with queer stylings and attitudes of a subculture – best evidenced in “The Woman from Malibu” series and “The Scientist Tapes.” Blurring the line between persona and self long before Paris Hilton ever did, the exhibition, curated by Jon Davies, reveals a shockingly prophetic view of life through a medium that Campbell and Steele helped to normalize. For the performer in us all (the one that comes out even in unexpected moments like when you feign not knowing you stole the necklace from that boutique in Venice,) do not miss “I Almost Ran Over Liza Minnelli Today: Colin Campbell and Lisa Steele in L.A., 1976–77.”

Jonathan Lyndon Chase, Figure Painting Blk and Blue, 2015.

But if you do miss it, at least give Jonathan Lyndon Chase a chance. Entitled Sheets, the show (up from July 4 -14) is the artist’s first solo foray in the realm of L.A galleries. With work that highlights the sort of distortions and abstractions of form that Francis Bacon would approve of, Chase’s emphasis is on the day-to-day existence of queer black men, and the obvious complications that come with declaring oneself to be in the forever oppressed and unforgiving mores of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

COULD THE U.S. GET ITS FIRST OUT-LESBIAN GOVERNOR? Lupe Valdez Has a Shot at Texas Legislature. The words “liberal” and “Texas” do not naturally go hand in hand. Former Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez is aiming to

change that with her gubernatorial run. Challenging known anti-LGBTQ+ incumbent Greg Abbott, Valdez is aware she’s working at a disadvantage in a state where George W. Bush, in his own former position as governor, once declared June 10 to be Jesus Day. Yet, as Valdez told The Advocate, “Everybody’s telling me this is an uphill battle. My response to that is, when has

Give PrEP a Shot!

it not been an uphill battle for me? … I’m getting darn good at uphill battles.” It’s true: As the youngest child born to migrant worker parents in a family of ten, Valdez often worked multiple jobs throughout her life in order to support herself and complete college, eventually obtaining a Master’s degree. It’s a background that truly embodies the old spirit of the American dream, one that’s been summarily crushed over the short period of time the Orange One has been in office. Valdez is also certainly no stranger to the “officiality” of government. She served in the military and eventually became the sheriff in Dallas County – naturally, the first Latina and the first out-lesbian to do so. In the face of those constant uphill battles she was talking about, Valdez still managed to be re-elected for three terms before choosing to resign in 2017 so as to pursue her campaign for governor. Dissatisfied with the way Abbott and his cronies run the state legislature, Valdez has commented, “They’re known for hostility to anyone other than their own. Muslims, transgender people…we need a government that respects everybody for who they are.” And if we can’t do it on a national scale, maybe it is best to start within one’s own state, one that according to Valdez, isn’t as conservative as it seems, noting, “Texas is not a red state. It’s a nonvoting state. It’s up to us to get these votes out.”

Photo: Timothy Greenfield-Sanders/HBO.

Lupe Valdez is a former sheriff of Dallas County.

Should Valdez manage to galvanize Texans to do just that with the tantalization of her progressive platform, it would mark the first time in twenty-two years since the state has allowed entrance of a Democrat into the office of governor (the last one being Ann Richards.) So, if you believe in Jesus Day, please pray this liberal drought will end.

FOR YOUR STREAMING PLEASURE

` ⚫ BY HENRY GIARDINA

LEFT – In “Nanette,” Hannah Gadsby bids a biting farewell to comedy.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY ADVENTURES IN CENTRAL AMERICA

“Nanette” Special Faces Up to Reality

Comedian Hannah Gadsby bids farewell to self-deprecating comedy.

Comedy, at its best, is supposed to stare down the truth. Once a fairly simple task, any kind of reckoning with “truth” becomes slightly more complicated in today’s world, where there are as many truths to one story as there are people who lived it, witnessed it, and hear about it. It’s a comedian’s job, in the world of #MeToo, to figure out how to poke fun at trauma while actually taking it very, very seriously. No one has yet managed to walk this line better than the gay Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby, whose stand-up show “Nanette” recently started streaming on Netflix. Gadsby has been in a few Australian shows and comedy specials, namely the magnificent “Please Like Me,” where she played a frankly suicidal and self-hating woman in recovery. “Nanette” draws on aspects of her fictional character in “Please Like Me” as well as her career as a stand-up comic to talk about why she’s giving up comedy for good. Or at least, a certain kind of comedy. Self-deprecating comedy, Gadsby starts out by saying in “Nanette,” may be the go-to style for comedians who are in a recognized minority. However, for those who aren’t in power, self-deprecation “isn’t humility,” said Gadsby. “It’s humiliating.” This is the thesis of “Nanette,” a special

that Gadsby named before she knew what it was going to be about. The name is used as a sort of throwaway joke in the beginning of a show: A relationship didn’t work out with a “fascinating” woman named Nanette. Gadsby used the name as inspiration before she knew how that relationship would end. Though it seems like a good way to name a comedy special that really can’t be summarized in a name (what do you call an hourlong treatise on the sins of patriarchy?) it’s also perfectly emblematic of what Gadsby is doing in her half-comic, half-tragic one-woman show. She’s talking about a relationship that didn’t work out: Her relationship with comedy, which presumably ends with “Nanette,” her greatest, most critically-acclaimed triumph. How many artists can say goodbye to the art form to which they’ve dedicated their life with such a bang? And how many can give a farewell to comedy show that ends with a 12-minute soliloquy that could not be more serious, in which Gadsby details her own rape, abuse, and humiliation at the hands of a patriarchal society? If this account doesn’t seem to make “Nanette” cohere, all the better. “Nanette” is not, and should not be, about narrative coherence. It tells the story of one woman’s continuing, semi-abusive relationship with comedy, with the world, with mental health, in an attempt to turn pain and sadness into outward, righteous anger. It succeeds, and it tears us apart in the process. “Nanette” must be seen to be believed, it must be seen to be understood as the great work of art that it is. In short, it must be seen.

How to Be the Best Friend of Dorothy in WeHo WeHo World

By Keldine Hull, PRIDE L.A. Columnist

A few things we bet you didn’t know about WeHo. The cultural significance of West Hollywood is undeniable. From the lavish nightclubs that saw legendary regulars like Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Dean Martin and Sydney Poitier to its love affair with all things rock and roll, it’s no surprise that West Hollywood’s motto is “The Creative City.” What began in 1886 as a portion of land to construct electric railways, West Hollywood has seen many transformations and acquired a history as richly diverse as its present. For as much as we may all know about West Hollywood and its storied past, there are many interesting facts about this unique city that have managed to remain relORL_2018_PRIDE_final.pdf 1 5/11/18 12:37 PM atively unknown. “I’m a friend of Dorothy.” Most gay men are familiar with the phrase,

“I’m a friend of Dorothy,” and it would make sense to assume that Dorothy refers to Judy Garland’s iconic role as Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz.” However, Dorothy’s ties are much closer to West Hollywood than somewhere over the rainbow. During the 1930’s, Dorothy Parker was a popular writer and socialite known for surrounding herself with gay men and throwing famous parties at Garden of Allah’s lavish celebrity villas. Gay men used the code, “I’m a friend of Dorothy,” as a secret password to gain entrance to these exclusive, wild events. “I’m a friend of Dorothy” soon became synonymous throughout the country as a way to secretly announce that someone was gay.

Gay West Hollywood For as long as anyone can remember, West Hollywood has been home to thousands from the LGBTQ+ community, even when the rest of the world has been far less inviting. During the silent film era, when West Hollywood was unincorporated and named after real estate mogul Moses Hazeltine Sherman, opulent nightclubs like the famous Ciro’s and Mocambo appeared up and down Sunset Boulevard. West Hollywood lay just on the outskirts of

the LAPD jurisdiction and its clubs became a haven that catered to the booming entertainment industry and allowed performers

to go against societal norms, challenging sexual and gender roles. 9015 Sunset Boulevard Before becoming the Rainbow Bar & Grill in 1972, 9015 Sunset Boulevard was home to the famous, star-studded Villa Nova. It was the

premiere choice for a romantic night on the town; in 1945 Vincente Minnelli proposed to Judy Garland, and in 1953, Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio had their first blind date. After becoming the Rainbow Bar & Grill, it became the rock and roll destination throughout the 70’s and 80’s, catering to legends like John Lennon, Alice Cooper, the Who, and Led Zeppelin. John Belushi had his infamous last meal at the Rainbow Bar & Grill before overdosing in his bungalow at the Chateau Marmont. West Hollywood in Music California has been the inspiration behind hundreds of songs throughout history, but a few special handful have specific ties to West Hollywood. Jim Morrison recorded the vocals for the Doors’ classic “LA Woman” in the bathroom of a makeshift studio in West Hollywood. Released in 1971, it helped to solidify the Doors as one of the most legendary rock

bands to come out of that era. “Welcome to the Jungle,” released by Guns N’ Roses in 1987, is considered one of history’s greatest hard rock songs of all time. It was inspired by the 80’s metal culture along the Sunset Strip and the infamous Hell House, a coke- and boozefilled mansion in the jungle of West Hollywood, complete with groupies and strippers alike. Sheryl Crow’s 1993 hit “All I Wanna Do” from her debut album famously mentioned West Hollywood when she sang, “All I wanna do is have some fun until the sun comes up over Santa Monica Boulevard.” Halloween Time With nearly half a million decked out, glittered up party goers in attendance,West Hollywood is home to the largest Halloween street party in the world. From La Cienega to Halloway Drive, Santa Monica Boulevard is taken over by the eccentrics, the creatives, and the very people that make West Hollywood as weirdly unique as it is. It’s a celebration that embodies the beauty in being different, the acceptance of all, and honors the colorful past that makes West Hollywood one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
