The Providence Center Opens RI’s first Recovery Community Center Joined by a crowd of supporters, The Providence Center opened Rhode Island’s first recovery center on December 2, 2010. Anchor Recovery Community Center, located at 249 Main Street in Pawtucket, provides people in recovery from substance use problems with the environment and resources they need to help them sustain their recovery.

Dave and Marge Sluter and Dominion Diagnostics Honored at Circle of Stars Over 260 guests gathered to honor Dominion Diagnostics, LLC, and Dave and Marge Sluter of New England Construction Company for their philanthropic support of the community at The Providence Center’s annual Circle of Stars event on Wednesday, October 27, 2010, at the Rhode Island Convention Center. The event raised over $166,000 in support of The Providence Center’s Coping with Crisis fund, which supports uninsured and underinsured children, adults and families who rely on The Providence Center for mental health and substance use services. Dale K. Klatzker, Ph.D., president/CEO of The Providence Center, described honorees Dominion Diagnostics, represented by co-founders David Siwicki, M.D., and Gwen Bauer, Ph.D., and Dave and Marge Sluter as “perfect examples of people and organizations who understand our mission to provide the best and most effective services to our clients who seek to live full and productive lives.” Karen Adams, anchor, WPRI-TV Eyewitness News, served as emcee for the evening’s program, which was highlighted by the powerful stories of Nicole DeFusco and Lisa Morsilli, clients of The Providence Center.

“It is our privilege and honor to offer this wonderful place of hope where the recovery community will be safe and receive the support, help and friendship they deserve to sustain their recovery.”

“Anchor Recovery Community Center is a much-needed, richly deserved resource for the recovery community,” said Dale K. Klatzker, Ph.D., president/CEO of The Providence Center. “It is our privilege and honor to offer this wonderful place of hope where the recovery community will be safe and receive the support, help and friendship they deserve to sustain their recovery.” For many, support for recovery from substance use problems ends at treatment. Anchor offers the recovery community the services necessary to ensure continued success and opportunities to give back to others in recovery. “People who get help for substance use problems often take the courageous step of accessing treatment; but once they leave treatment, they go right back to an environment where drug use is the norm and often lose the gains they’ve made,” said James Gillen, director of recovery services at The Providence Center. “Anchor provides the long-term support they need.” Anchor Recovery Community Center is a valuable resource for Rhode Island, a state with the highest rate of illicit drug use in the nation. It is a clearinghouse for information about addiction, mental health and recovery. For family and friends who have loved ones experiencing substance use problems, Anchor is a place of understanding.

“Today is an important day for recovery in Rhode Island,” said Craig Stenning, director of the Department of Behavioral Health, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals, who spoke at Anchor’s opening. “Anchor Recovery Community Center is a great resource for the thousands of Rhode Islanders who overcome substance use problems every day. Recovery means hope and this center will provide hope for hundreds of individuals.” The Providence Center partners with local recovery support service agencies to support Anchor, including the Rhode Island Communities for Addiction Recovery Efforts and Stanley Street Treatment and Resources. Anchor is partially funded through a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and a private donor.

Support for Teens and Families As January approached, Dan’s senior year of high school went from fun to frightening. Studying for midterm exams and filling out college applications had kept him up all night for weeks. Mentally and physically exhausted, Dan shut himself up in his room, refusing to speak to anyone, not even his parents.

Teens face many pressures—from social influences to academic demands to new relationships—that sometimes result in emotions and behaviors that are difficult to manage. Stress, anxiety, defiant behavior and aggression may signal a serious mental health issue. The Providence Center’s Adolescent Partial Hospital and Intensive Outpatient Programs offer a solution to help adolescents cope with challenges in a supported, structured environment. For up to five days a week, six hours a day, adolescents ages 12 to 18 receive group, individual and family therapy to address emotional and behavioral problems. Clients work with a treatment team of clinicians, case managers and psychiatrists over a two- or three-week period to identify behaviors that will help them achieve goals, such as learning how to manage emotions or improving relationships with family, friends and teachers. Daily skills groups focus on communication, building self-esteem and addressing negative thought patterns. Clients stay connected to their community schools by completing homework assignments.

“We see many teens who isolate themselves, believing that no one understands what they’re feeling,” said Ann Achille, manager of the Adolescent Partial Hospital and Intensive Outpatient Programs. “Group therapy provides our clients with a place to feel safe while sharing their feelings with others in similar circumstances.” Weekly family meetings are helpful for families to understand their teens’ behaviors and for developing communication and conflict resolution techniques. Family involvement helps the treatment team to make effective recommendations for clients and their families.

President/CEO Dale K. Klatzker, Ph.D., with Kathy Grant, representing Beacon Health Strategies

Substance use is a dangerous behavior that teens may resort to during difficult times or through peer pressure. Groups on substance use education and relapse prevention address important substance use issues. The Adolescent Partial Hospital and Intensive Outpatient Programs also serve as a resource for school nurses, teachers and guidance counselors who are searching for solutions to help their students overcome challenges. “We help schools to explore behaviors like truancy issues, behavior problems or a dip in academic performance,” said Achille. “After two or three weeks in our program, our clients have learned ways to stay focused in their classrooms and deal with their emotions without becoming angry.”

Adolescents have unique needs. The staff of the Adolescent Partial Hospital and Intensive Outpatient Programs understands those needs and is dedicated to helping teens work to make positive changes in their lives. To learn more about the program or to make an appointment, call 401.276.4020.

“Mike is an inspiring Michael Tousignant Chosen as The Providence Center’s “Partner in Philanthropy” Giving back is what Michael Tousignant, director of assurance services and shareholder at Kahn, Litwin, Renza & Co., Ltd. (KLR), does naturally. “It’s a privilege for me to give back,” says Tousignant. “It’s how I was brought up, and it’s the culture at KLR.” National Philanthropy Day gives nonprofits worldwide the opportunity to recognize community leaders who have made a significant impact on their organizations. Last November, The Providence Center was proud to honor Michael Tousignant as its “Partner in Philanthropy” at a special ceremony sponsored by the Rhode Island Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick, Rhode Island. Tousignant was chosen for his outstanding philanthropic support and fundraising leadership of The Providence Center and other nonprofit agencies throughout New England. “Mike is an inspiring community leader committed to working with The Providence Center and all his nonprofit clients,” says Dale K.
