The Providence Center

Message from the CEO

Over the past 40 years, our vision has been guided by our mission to provide the best possible and most effective services to our clients. As we celebrate the past and look to a future filled with possibilities, that vision continues to be the hallmark of our future. As we move forward, we build on our foundation of compassionate care with innovation, responsibility and dedication. The Providence Center’s foundation is the belief that our clients’ needs are best served in the community with a full continuum of care that addresses the whole person. From counseling and medication to education, wellness, housing and employment, our clients’ unique needs have always been, and always will be, met with care and compassion. One of the keys to our future success is rooted in innovation and technology. It’s no secret that funding cuts have seriously impacted the behavioral health field. As funding is reduced, we must react positively and proactively with creative, innovative changes that use technology to develop efficient, effective ways to bring health and hope to the people we serve. Another key to our future is that we remain good fiscal stewards. As president/CEO, I take this responsibility very seriously. We have been entrusted with resources by the State of Rhode Island, health insurers, our donors, our friends and our clients. This is a privilege, and it’s important that we spend the dollars we’ve been given wisely, prudently and appropriately. Along with being good fiscal stewards comes the responsibility to serve as a leading public voice on issues that are important to our clients and the behavioral health field. Historically, The Providence Center has advocated for its clients and the rights of all citizens. We believe that everyone has the right to lead a full and meaningful life and that we have a responsibility to challenge those aspects of the system that may stand in the way of that right. Providing our clients with exceptional services would not be possible without our dedicated employees. They are our greatest asset. At The Providence Center, we work hard to create an environment that recognizes, supports, rewards and challenges our employees because without them, The Providence Center would not exist. Over the past 40 years, hundreds of thousands of people have turned to The Providence Center for help. They look to us with faces filled with hope and dreams for a better life. They are the faces of our past; they are the faces of our present, and they are the reason The Providence Center will be here tomorrow. Dale K. Klatzker, PhD President/CEO

This annual report is dedicated to our trustees, donors, staff and the hundreds of thousands of clients whose lives have been touched by The Providence Center over the past 40 years.

Message from the board chair

faces of forty: celebrating 40 years

The Providence Center’s 40-year history is reflected in the faces of our clients, trustees, donors and staff. Their voices combine to tell a story rooted in The Providence Center’s past and present. Some have watched The Providence Center grow from a small mental health clinic with only a handful of employees to a large organization serving over 10,000 people each year. Some talk about what The Providence Center means to them. And some talk about how The Providence Center saved their lives. But whether they are part of our past or present, they all have one thing in common: They have built a solid foundation for our future. This annual report is dedicated to our trustees, donors, staff and the hundreds of thousands of clients whose lives have been touched by The Providence Center over the past 40 years. Jim Botvin Chair, Board of Trustees

The Providence Center: their families with the support they need to function productively in home, school and community settings. My experiences at The Providence Center have convinced me that a community-based approach is best for children, families and adults in terms of dealing with mental health and behavioral health issues. Sometimes we need to use hospitals to keep people safe, but we really need to get people involved in treatment in the community because whether their problems are related to family, friends, job, or school, the community is the context in which their problems exist.

Dr. James Greer My first impression when I interviewed for a position at The Providence Center was that the quality of work, exceptional staff and a cooperative multi-disciplinary approach to treatment made it an extraordinary organization. I have been on staff at The Providence Center since 1985 and every day my experiences continue to support that first impression. At The Providence Center, we use a team approach to treatment. As clinical director of Child and Family Services, I work together with professionals from a variety of disciplines. We offer a broad range of programs and services designed specifically to meet the specialized needs of children and adolescents experiencing behavioral challenges. The goal throughout all of our programs and services at The Providence Center is to provide adults, young people and

The staff at The Providence Center is exceptional. Physicians, psychologists, therapists, nurses, teachers and caseworkers all work together to teach our clients how to live in the community and how to address all the daily challenges they face. It is a privilege to work at The Providence Center alongside such talented and dedicated people who give so much to our clients and to each other.

James Greer, MD, clinical director of Child and Family Services Dr. Greer is past president of the Rhode Island Council for Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and past board member of the Mental Health Association of Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Coalition of Consumer Self-Advocates. He was assistant professor of child psychiatry and pediatrics at Tulane University and, since 1985, has been clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at Brown University. In 1999, he received the Nancy Roeske Award for Excellence in Teaching from the American Psychiatric Association for his work at Brown and the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award for 2001 from the National Association for the Mentally Ill for his advocacy efforts on behalf of the mentally ill. He has been published in medical and psychiatric journals and is currently co-writing a book on early childhood trauma and neglect and its effects on children’s brains, emotions and behavior.

William P. Devereaux, Esq. I believe that the greatness of a society is reflected in how it cares for those who cannot help themselves. The Providence Center serves some of the most vulnerable people in our society. It has been an honor for me to be associated with an organization that is filled with professionals dedicated to providing exceptional services to people with mental health and substance use problems. As a board member, I work with 22 other trustees to ensure that The Providence Center stays connected to its mission. The board is an eclectic group and each person brings valuable expertise to the table to assist The Providence Center in achieving its goals of service to the community. We take our fiduciary responsibility very seriously. The bottom line is that without money, The Providence Center cannot deliver the much needed services we offer our clients. Especially in these tough economic times, it is vitally important to recognize that when you make a donation to The Providence Center, you are making an investment in your community. If we foster a community that cares about its people, particularly those most in need, we create a better place for our children and grandchildren. Over its 40-year history, The Providence Center has time and again helped, and in some cases saved, many lives and families. However, none of that would have been possible without its dedicated staff members. They are the heart of this wonderful organization. Without them, many people in our community would simply have fallen through the cracks and have been forgotten. The work our staff performs is long, at times frustrating and requires consistent patience to ensure each client’s success. These folks, not the Hollywood stars and the professional athletes, are the true heroes of society. I have stayed connected to The Providence Center for so many years because I sincerely believe that The Providence Center is a vital cog in our community. I also believe that if you have been fortunate in life you must give something back, whether that be money or service. Being associated with The Providence Center has given me that opportunity and certainly has enriched my life. William P. Devereaux, Esq., has been a member of The Providence Center’s board of trustees since 1995. He is a partner at the law firm of Pannone Lopes Devereaux & West LLC.

Our stories ... staff, trustees, clients and donors Elaine helped me to realize that I could not heal until I allowed myself to stop pretending and feel the pain. I went to The Providence Center for three years and every time I saw her I got stronger. Elaine taught me to fight back. She helped me to discover how important it was to take care of myself. She gave me my pride back; she gave me my strength back; she gave me my life back. As Director of Constituent Affairs for Congressman Patrick Kennedy’s office, many times people call me looking for help with mental health or substance use problems. I always recommend professional help and tell them that most people have times in their lives when they need help. It’s nothing to be ashamed of; it’s just the way it is.

After my 24-year marriage broke up, I became very depressed. It wasn’t long before I realized I couldn’t get my strength back without help. That’s when I called The Providence Center. My counselor’s name was Elaine. When I first met her, I was in pain— not physical pain, emotional pain. I was trying hard to pretend that I was fine, but pretending always manages to catch up with you after a while.

One of the reasons we support The Providence Center is to help raise awareness about mental illness. Mental illness touches the lives of so many people. It shouldn’t be a deep, dark secret that families keep hidden.

As president of the Parish Council at St. Teresa’s Church in Pawtucket, I began an initiative to help clothe the children at The Providence Center. I can still remember the thank-you note I received when I made our first delivery: “Your bountiful donations transformed a slightly tired, moderately grumpy child into a hugely pleased little girl with an enormous smile.” That was it; I was hooked. Ever since that day, I’ve been supporting The Providence Center in any way I can. For me, helping The Providence Center to make a difference in a child’s life is a privilege.

The Providence Center has saved so many lives. We tell everyone we know that we support The Providence Center. We want to make our friends and the public aware. It’s the right thing to do.

Michael and Mary Schwartz have been generously supporting The Providence Center since 1992. Michael co-chaired The Providence Center’s first annual golf tournament in 2002.

Rev. Robert T. Brooks The Providence Center serves some of the most vulnerable people in Rhode Island and its surrounding communities. As an Episcopal priest, I see firsthand the need for mental health and substance use services. My parish alone hosts 13 substance use recovery meetings each week. The outstanding work done by The Providence Center in this and so many other areas makes me proud to be part of this organization’s leadership.

Reverend Robert T. Brooks, member of The Providence Center’s board of trustees and Rector of St. Andrew’s by-the-Sea parish in Little Compton, has been a member of the board since 2005.

Donald Barbeau, president of Coffee Express LTD, has been dedicated to supporting The Providence Center’s children for over 20 years.

“For me, helping The Providence Center to make a difference in a child’s life is a privilege.”

Paul DeFanti As an accountant, there are times when I need information from other staff members to get my job done. From our president/CEO and senior leadership team to any other staff member, I know I can walk into anyone’s office without an appointment and get the information I need. Just as our clients are supported by a broad range of services, as a staff member, I am supported by my fellow employees. At The Providence Center, staff members are valued and respected.

I have been a member of The Providence Center’s board of trustees since 1994 and a client at The Providence Center for the past 17 years. I joined the board to represent the needs of clients. I’ve been working to assist The Providence Center in creating effective ways for clients to communicate with the organization about their experiences so that we know what is working and what needs improvement.

The Providence Center has helped me through so many difficult times.

I started working at The Providence Center in 1973 as a psychiatric nurse. I was the first psychiatric nurse to work in a community mental health center in Rhode Island. The Providence Center has grown so much since then. From counseling to medication management, case management, educational and vocational services, our clients receive exceptional services from a highly competent, dedicated staff. I’m proud to be on staff at The Providence Center and to have had the opportunity to play a small part in establishing a nursing presence in the behavioral health field in Rhode Island.

Stephen M. Carpenter The Providence Center’s mission is a match with the Shriner’s philosophy to help children with special needs. Since our philosophies are the same, it was natural for us to support The Providence Center through our philanthropic efforts.

“I have achieved a level of independence and fulfillment that I once would not have believed possible.”

At the Shriner’s, we like to take children that are hurting and leave them a little better than we found them. We do that when we support The Providence Center.

I am in recovery from paranoid schizophrenia. I have not been in a psychiatric hospital since 1981 when I started at The Providence Center, and I do not expect to be in one again in this lifetime. The Providence Center has allowed me to grow and recover to the point where I have achieved a level of independence and fulfillment that I once would not have believed possible.

Daniel Daniel began having problems at day care when he was just two years old. I was getting four or five calls a week about his “problem” behavior. Everywhere I turned for help, I faced frustration. Finally, I found The Providence Center’s Early Childhood Institute and our lives began to change. Through their wisdom and compassion, the staff members at The Providence Center have given me great hope for Daniel’s future. The people at The Providence Center are true heroes; they change lives every day. Ana P. Novais The staff and leadership at The Providence Center have very open minds and are always willing to embrace diversity and new ideas. As a member of the board of trustees, I share my understanding of the health needs of Rhode Islanders and my years of experience working in mental health and cultural competency to help The Providence Center serve the incredibly diverse communities in Providence and surrounding areas. I am honored to be associated with The Providence Center.

Over the years, The Providence Center has blazed new trails in behavioral health, evolving to serve a changing and growing population. We are a vital part of the community—and that is a legacy worth celebrating.

Tribute Gifts “This is the most affluent nation in the world; yet, we have millions of people who do not have health insurance. Where does the burden to serve them fall? It falls on organizations like The Providence Center and the dedicated people and volunteers that make them work.

Of the thousands of people served by The Providence Center, there are many who would have had no chance but for this organization.”

Philip W. Noel, former governor of Rhode Island, has been generously supporting The Providence Center since 2006.
