This year, as the lunar calendar prepares to clock in the New Year on February 16th, it also welcomes the Year of the Dog, which is regarded as an auspicious animal. If a dog happens to come to a house, it symbolises the coming of fortune. Celebrations for the Chinese New Year last to the Lantern Festival which lands on the 15th day of the lunar month, and is preceded with almost 7 days of preparation following a day-byday guide for things to do before ringing in the Year of the Dog.
Fun Facts The Chinese New Year greeting is “Gong Xi Fa Cai”. In the Qin Dynasty (221 - 207 BC), the turn of a year cycle was called Shangri, Yuanri and Gaisui. The lunar calendar also defines the 12-year repeating cycle of the Chinese zodiac, and each year is named after an animal. 2018 is the Year of the Dog.
