Sitting with two fantastic international rugby players was a dream come true as superstars Schalk Brits and Vincent Koch spent the time off with their families at the Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri! Through their busy golfing, sunbathing and unwinding schedule, we managed to lure them in for an interview with the delicious Afternoon Tea and our charming smiles. The result? It’s all below!

Is this your first time in Abu Dhabi? SB: No, this is my second time in Abu Dhabi, but first time with all the family, we really like it here! VK: This is our first in Abu Dhabi, although we have visited Dubai previously. Abu Dhabi was in fact suggested by my brother as Abu Dhabi is a bit more relaxed compared to Dubai. Have you seen the sights, and if so, are there any favourites? SB: Already checked out Yas Waterworld and Ferrari World, and hopefully we will visit the Mosque! VK: At Yas Waterworld I had to do a weigh-in before being accepted on the rides which was nerve-racking, as I almost failed! (Vincent is approx. 118kg) What are the top 3 items you take on vacation with you? SB: Golf clubs, shorts, and my phone VK: Phone, sunscreen- and hair product! How are you finding travel with 3 young boys? SB: Quite different to travelling alone! Travelling with children is full on for many parents and takes plenty of patience and energy. The key is trying to get some time to relax among all the chaos! How are your first impressions of Shangri-La Hotel in Abu Dhabi? VK: We had an amazing first impression actually, it was late and we were all tired, and as soon as we arrived, the staff at the lobby sensed that the children were overtired and restless, so literally within seconds they swooped in a kept their attention while we could focus on a fast check-in and getting to our rooms quickly. This really made a difference, thank you to your team! Have you visited other parts of the GCC region? VK: We have actually visited Oman previously, and thoroughly enjoyed the peacefulness of our stay there. With a career that required travelling such as an international rugby player, you would have had the opportunity to see parts of the world as well as through your personal travel; do you have a favourite destination in the world? SB: Maldives, our honeymoon destination and the first place in the world that I felt truly cut off from the rest of the world.
