INTERVIEW

Brad &

Photos by Mina Wangpattanamongkol

With love in the air, it is very easy to get lost in the spirit of this time, Valentine’s Day. That’s why we turn to esteemed seniors Brad and Nupook to not only share their experiences, but also to demonstrate a long-lasting example of what love can look like.

How long have you been together?

[N] It was on and off for about four years since 8th grade, more specifically the second semester of 8th grade.

[B] I mean, I think the time we came back was June 12, 2020, which ended up being the right time.

What is your idea of an enjoyable date?

[N] Chilling at home and eating pizza

[B] A movie night at home while binging movies together

What advice would you give to other couples? To single people?

[N] Do not trust what others or your friends say - you should trust your partner the most. For those who are single, just wait for the perfect time.

[B] Try to be understanding of your partner, don’t act like you own them. But, being single is nice.

From our seniors, described as an empathetic and supportive Nupook with easygoing and caring Brad, we see a wonderful couple who are an example to others and show love not just in their relationship, but to those around them.

Pim & Darren

Valentines 2021 15

How did you first meet?

[D] We met last year during 1984 rehearsals. But we really started talking during Oliver.

[P] Yes, Darren was the lead and I was the stage manager, so we worked quite closely together and talked a lot backstage. We also had PE class together. We basically first met doing that bet though.

[D] Right, at the preview for Oliver, I bet Pim an icecream cone over how many people would come, and she won, so I bought her an ice cream.

How did you know each other were the one?

[P] When you meet someone who makes your life worth living then you know they’re the one.

[D] She’s just so kind all the time, and she still is just way out of my league, and I always thought that if I were to ever have a girlfriend, Pim would be everything on the list, but like, times a billion.

THE QUILL 16

What’s your favorite memory that you have together?

[D] Mine would be my birthday; she surprised me with the best night of all time: dinner on a cruise ship. But the best part was when she gave me a book of poems that she’d written for me. It was a long book, but I read it in a day because it was just so awesome that I couldn’t stop reading it.

[P] Mine was also my birthday, when he gave me a series of gifts: a video with sweet messages from all my friends to remind me how much I’m loved and a matching ring and necklace, and he even sang me my favorite love song! Basically, he really made it the best birthday ever.

What’s a funny memory you have together?

[D] Sometimes when I want to make Pim laugh when we’re eating in public, I put a straw in my mouth and make duck noises.

[P] I both hate and love the duck. Also, when I go over to his house, sometimes he’ll go upstairs and get a nerf gun and shoot me with it. It always makes me laugh, and then I take the gun and shoot him back.

What’s your ideal date?

[P] The ideal date for me is just to be with Darren. It doesn’t really matter where we’re having the date, just that Darren is there; that’s the most important thing.

[D] I agree with exactly what she said; we kind of do a lot of different stuff so there’s not one ‘ideal’.

What’s the best thing about dating the other person?

[D] Anyone who knows Pim knows how caring and awesome she is. And if you want someone to hang out and just vibe with, if that someone is Pim then it makes things just so much more awesome; she’s a great best friend but also girlfriend.

Interview & Photos by Beam Yongphiphatwong
THE QUILL 22

What were yoUr first impressions of each other?

[T] I bullied her for being the new kid

[I] I first saw him back in 7th grade Thai class. He was this super loud kid, who basically [shouted] all the time. That’s when I knew that he was a bully.

What do you like about each other?

[T] Her cookies are awesome and she lets me be the alpha.

[I] His playfulness and aggressive gestures. The two moles on his right cheek and his chubby corgi, shoyu.

What’s your favorite memory together?

[T] She made me eat some yogurt salad, and it was kinda good.

[I] When I was late on our first date. Our deep conversations and debate sessions. You know I’m always right. Hahaha, just kidding.

What’s the longest phone conversation you’ve had with each other?

[T] I called with too many girls, so I can’t remember. (Emphasis on called)

[I] I’ve been on a call with three guys consecutively. When do I start counting?

THE QUILL 24

What’s something you would like to do together in the future?

[T] I want to watch a lot of movies with her.

[I] Let’s finish that movie list we made together. And maybe all the other lists too.

Final words to each other?

[T] Stop acting like a mom.

[I] I admit that I can be vexing and toxic. But you are stuck with me now. So deal with it.

mr. ben & mrs. asia

First off, please introduce yourselves!

[A] Hi! I’m Mrs. Asia. I am the middle school visual arts teacher, and this is my second year teaching in ICS. I was actually an ICS student in high school and graduated in 2015, so it’s great to be back!

[B] I’m Mr. Ben, and I’m married to Mrs. Asia. I work as a recruiter for a college in the U.S. Some students might know me because I work as a substitute teacher here as well.

How would you define love?

[B] Love has a lot that goes into it. I would define it as making a decision that you are going to care for someone and value them no matter what.

[A] I think love is putting someone else’s needs above your own. It could be love for a friend as well; loving them and being willing to care about them more than yourself. That, I believe, is the hardest thing to do.

What does Valentine’s Day mean to you?

[A] Actually, we started dating on Valentine’s Day 5 years ago. So, it’s like our dating anniversary. It’s fun to reminisce about our relationship throughout these 5 years.

[B] Yeah, and that day was definitely extra special to me as well. On that February 14th, I took some time off, wrote her a little poem, and took her to this bridge overlooking a small river leading into a lake. It was snowing, it was really romantic, and I asked her, “will you be my girlfriend,” and she was like—

[A] —“Why’d you wait so long!”

[B] Yeah! So yes, Valentine’s day is very special to us!

[A] And Valentine’s Day is also special to celebrate with friends and family too! The other day I was making Valentine’s cards with my younger brother and it’s really cool to see how kids view Valentine’s. He was telling me that he needed

to write to all these people in his life as he believed Valentine’s was for everybody. I just thought that was a very special way to look at Valentine’s: that Valentine’s is for everybody.

What are three qualities about your spouse that you find most admirable?

[B] It’s hard to pick just three, but if I had to pick… I would say she’s super creative. She’s amazing at coming up with ideas and making them a reality. Secondly, she’s extremely driven. When she wants to do something, she gets it done and does it meaningfully and purposefully. The third thing is that she really, really, really cares about people. The longer you spend time with her, the more you realize that she just

loves people and wants to connect on a deeper level.

[A] With Ben, he was very quick to find people who were often unnoticed and spend time with them. It made me realize that he doesn’t just care about the ones that everybody loves but also the people that may not have as many friends. He’s also very patient and level-headed. He’s rarely offended and very gracious. Another thing I find most admirable is that there is absolutely no task that is below him. He will do anything for anybody just to be a helping hand. For example, I don’t always do the laundry right away because I’m busy with school, but he will have it already done and finished by the time I even notice.

THE QUILL 30

Who popped the question? How did the proposal happen?

[A] It actually happened here in Bangkok when we were here for vacation to see my parents.

[B] I had bought a ring at least a few months ago. I actually hid the ring in a sock in the airport, so I was like smuggling this really expensive ring in this sock in my trunk. And I didn’t know how, when, or where exactly I was going to propose, and I had to find a decent place. We went to King’s park which I thought was going to be a nice, quiet place. We get there and it is packed with people. There’s this massive fitness group at the center blasting loud music and people are jogging and talking

everywhere. I just thought to myself, I can’t propose here. We walked around a little, and I just remember constantly being distracted, trying to find a calm, quiet place. Finally, I saw this museum with nobody along the railing, and I just decided to go for it. So, I went to a corner and asked her to give me a second as I took out this little, potted plant. And what I had done was, since I knew she loves plants, I was going to put the ring on the plant and propose with the ring on the branch. But when I turned around and took out the potted plant, it had come apart in the bag. So I had to replant it in the bag and put the ring back on the branch. So, I got it back together, turned around and was like, will you marry me, and she said yes!

COULD WE GET A SHORT INTRODUCTION?

J: I’m Mr. Jonathan, the high school art teacher.

L: I’m Mrs. Lyndsey, the wife, haha. We’ve been married for only 10 and a half months.

J: And we’ve moved to Thailand pretty much immediately after getting married.

L: A little over 6 months ago. We’ve been in Thailand for over half of our marriage. We heard about the opportunity [to come to Thailand] about a week after we got

Was having an online wedding a strain on your relationship?

J: I think we were more sad for friends and family not being able to join us. But the whole experience was beautiful and fun in different ways that we couldn’t have anticipated. It ended up being a really fun and enjoyable experience.

L: Yea, I don’t feel like we missed anything. I felt like the family missed out from being there in person, but I thought it was still great that we got to get married 2 months earlier.

DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD EVER HAVE ANOTHER CELEBRATION AFTER COVID?

J: We’d still like to have a reception.

L: My brother got married in January, so my parents’ two kids have Covid weddings, so we might do something together.

How did it feel getting married and moving to another country at the same time?

J: I think it felt a lot like a whirlwind, but I think it was a little bit easier to make a lot of big changes at the same time.

L: Because getting married causes a lot to change and moving causes a lot to change, it feels like they go hand in hand when we do them tog together.

J: And it feels fun, sort of like a big adventure.

Would you consider being in Thailand as your honeymoon?

J: Well, we joke that it’s going to be a 2 year long honeymoon.

L: But we did go to Phuket over Christmas. Going into some fluffy questions, what were your first impressions of each other?

J: Stunningly cute.

L: Attractive.

What was your first date?

J: I took her out to breakfast.

What was your impression of the date?

L: It was really good. We sat and just kept getting the refillable coffee two hours after we finished breakfast because we were still chatting. And I thought he was very smart and interesting. Maybe a little mysterious.

Have you started any traditions through your dating time?

J: A tradition we started very early on was praying together, so that was very nice to connect.

L: And a prayer journal that we made. We fill it out with things we’re thankful for and hopeful for… We had to start a new one recently because we finished our old one.

What is your favorite thing to do together?

L: Well, I really love hiking, but we haven’t really been able to do that. That’s my favorite thing to do. We also like to go to the pool together and swim. And eating.

J: Working out.

L: Yea, working out and then eating.

Would you say that Mr. Jonathan fits the stereotype of an art teacher?

L: Hmm… Yes and no… He loves to teach people art, but more specifically loves how to explain how he did something. He likes to assist more than lecture and is very hands-on.

J: I think a stereotype that’s very true is that all of my clothes are stained with some art material.

L: Haha, absolutely. It’s a part of life.

Some people have found your (Mrs. Lyndsey’s) social media accounts. Is that a hobby or just something you’ve always done?

L: I am doing a blog; it’s a combo of many things. It’s a travel blog for my family, but it’s also an update blog of what I’m doing workwise. I guess I’m taking some photos for the blog, but I don’t know if I have a good eye.

J: She’s very artistic and has a good eye.

Valentines 2021 41 Friendship

How did you guys first meet?

[E] I came to ICS in fifth grade and we were in the same homeroom!

How long have you guys been best friends?

[R] It has been around six years!

Could you tell us about some special or unforgettable memories together?

[R] Probably SALT Trips and Eagles’ Camps, because that’s when we could bond the most.

[E] Yes! Also, sitting together on the bus, reading funny stories, and playing different games.

[R] We’ve also been to the malls together a few times to watch movies!

What is your favorite thing about each other?

[R] My favorite thing about Eliza is that I can be myself around her and she wouldn’t judge me because we are both weird! And she’s always so humble and loving.

[E] I like how Rani is really humble and encouraging. She is compassionate towards others and feels things with other people. She always asks me how I am and how my day is, which is sweet.

What is one piece of advice you would give about friendship?

[R] Stick with your friends through all the hard times and don’t just abandon them when things are getting difficult.

[E] Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable with friends and let them know what’s going on in your life because that will provide more opportunities for you to get even closer.

Friendship Interview: Ken &Andy

How long have you guys been friends?

[K] Since fifth grade

[A] Uhh, yeah, fifth grade.

How did you guys become friends and what were your first impressions of each other?

[A] Actually, at that time I was friends with Dino and we would make fun of him.

[K] Andy and Dino didn’t have too many friends in fifth grade, so I went to sit with them. That’s how it all started. I remember that he was pretty tall.

[A] What? I was the same height as you!

What’s the best thing about the other person?

[A] Well, there’s a lot to say. One thing I really enjoy about Ken is that he reminds me of the angry character in Inside Out.

[K] Andy stays calm most of the time.

Anything you want to say to each other?

[K] It’s been a great year so far, so let’s keep it good. I hope we’ll be friends for a long time.

[A] Me too. I hope we go to college together and set up our lives and futures with each other.

Friendship Jordan &

Friendship
Interview by Amy Jain Photography by Oak Muadthong

What were your first impressions of each other?

[A] Honestly I don’t remember much of Jordan until he was “initiated” (who knows what that means), but I think I remember him being super chill and down to earth and I knew he got along with a lot of people. After a while he easily made me laugh and it was super fun spending time with him.

[J] Austin was named Autist and I quickly understood why

How long have you been friends?

[A] Three years

[J] Two and a half years

what is one word you would use to describe your bestfriend?

[A] Doofus

[J] Nicom-dingus

What [A] getting and euphoria [J] affectionate time algebra What friendship? [A] thing, per share he’s [J] but and

What is one of your favorite memories?

[A] Way too many to list but some top ones include getting noodles, griefing his builds on Minecraft, and recently being with him as he experienced the euphoria of watching a crypto bet gain and gain. Austin's story telling, him being suspiciously affectionate with daniel, and more specifically the time he got in trouble when I slapped his butt in pre algebra

What was the thing that solidified your friendship?

[A] Honestly, I don’t really think there was any one thing, just stuff like how our personalities go super well together, we are easily able to open up and share about what’s going on in our lives, and how he’s just a super cool person.

We’re pretty sensitive guys so we can emphasize but also know when to knock the other on the head and tell them to snap out of it

Why do you think you two connect so well?

[A] Similar to the last answer, but our personalities definitely match pretty perfectly and we share a lot of the same interests. Literally this question could probably be answered by our MBTI types (especially according to Jordan).

[J] I give ideas, suggestions and possibilities. He gives confirmation, commitment and focus.

What’s the most bro-mantic memory you have together?

[A] He was riding behind me on my motorcycle and decided to pull out the full hug. Other than that I have no idea.

[J] Grabbing at my chest and yelling "its harvesting time"

What’s unique about your friendship?

[A] We both overthink and get anxious about certain things or tend to wallow in our sorrows, it makes it so that we are able to support each other pretty well a lot of the time, I don’t know if this is unique but it definitely seems like something I share pretty uniquely with him.

[J] yeah, sometimes our relationship is like a whirlpool where our overthinking sinks us to the bottom :)

Photography by & Photography by Lala Lertkiatdamrong

What was your first impression of each other?

[M]: I remember that she came in the same year as me in Mr. Greer’s drama class. And I don’t know why, but I have this very specific memory of her with a jewel pet design on an ID card holder.

[L]: For me. I guess it was also drama class... and I remember that she was this super tiny, and skinny girl with short hair. Yeah, and at lunch she would always eat sandwiches with eggs inside.

How did you guys get close?

[L]: I think it happened in drama class right?

THE QUILL 56

[M]: Yeah, drama class. In 7th grade, we had quite a lot of the same classes, so we did projects together and realized how much we have in common. And we just vibe, you know? It’s like, finding someone that matches your energy and is willing to do dumb stuff with you.

[L]: Plus, we were both new at the time, so we sat together at the new kids table at lunch.

What is your relationship like?

[M]: I think we really balance each other out at different times. Sometimes one of us is more mature while the other is more crazy or irrational (I’m usually the irrational one). She keeps me in check with reality.

[L]: I think Mina is kind of like the emotional one, and I’m like the logical one. When we become crazy we both become crazy and no one can really stop us.

[M]: I’ve got the perfect analogy: her without me is like a stone, me without her is like a dandelion.

What is something you two have in common

[L]: I think we do a lot of dumb stuff together, like in 6th grade and 7th grade we were both into squishies and slime. We would agree to buy each other’s stuff.

[M]: Aside from that, maybe our sense of humour? We’re both pretty messed up. We laugh at everything.

[L]: We laugh at the wrong stuff.

Valentines 2021 57

What qualities do you love about each other?

[M]: She helps me to not settle for less, because without her I wouldn’t be able to see my own potential because I’m so focused on how I view myself that I don’t focus on reality or how I appear to others. So she helps me see that I am more than my own definition of myself.

[L]: Well for me I think I kind of mentioned this before, but sometimes I’m not really the emotional person or think about the emotional side of things too much. She kind of showed me that I have to become less rough with certain things. Since I’m more logical or the “facts” kind of person, Mina helps me to be able to empathise with others more.

THE QUILL 58

Favourite memory together?

[M]: I think HSM was one of the core ones! Another one would be singing karaoke at 3 am

[L]: Oh no.

[M]: We both like photoshoots because we both are into photography, so she takes photos for me and I take photos for her. But we kind of have a different style, story. It’s still hard to help each other out sometimes!

Friendzone

Written

Genre: Romance/Drama

Where to watch: Netflix

Plot: Being “just friends” with someone you romantically love can hurt so bad, it stings. For the past 10 years of their relationship, Palm (Naphat Siangsomboon) and Gink (Pimchanok Luevisadpaibul) have been stuck between being “lovers” and “friends”. The two begin to grow closer and quickly fall for each other, but will that bond be enough for them to move out of the friendzone?

Friendzone is a film perfect for anyone who’s in a sticky situation. This film might make you laugh as it’s painfully relatable.

I Fine… Thank You… Love You

Written

Genre: Romance/ Comedy

Where to watch: Netflix

Plot: Pleng, an English teacher, teaches a student enough English to go to America. Before leaving, her student asks her to confront her boyfriend, Yim, about their breakup. Yim blames Pleng for their breakup and devises a plan to learn enough English to travel to America and get back with his girlfriend. Yet, he gradually ends up developing feelings for Pleng throughout the process.

Thailand’s most popular rom-com film, I Fine… Thank You… Love You, will make anyone laugh. From their word play to weird jokes, it is a perfect feelgood movie for any date night.

Valentines 2021 61

Enchanted

Genre: Disney/Romance

Where to watch: Amazon Prime/ Disney+

Plot: ‘Enchanted’ brings “Once upon a time” into real life. As Princess Giselle (Amy Adams) is sent from her fairy-tale home of Andalasia into NYC, the land of “no happy ever afters’’, she leaves behind her true love, Prince Edward in the fairy-tale world. Princess Giselle finds herself falling in love with a divorced lawyer in NYC. How will she know who to choose to be her Prince Charming?

Enchanted’s combination of reality and fiction and its self-parodies to Disney classics give it a timeless feel.

Barfi

Genre: Romance/Comedy

Where to watch: Netflix

Plot: A deaf and mute man, Barfi (Rabin Kappor), falls in love with an autistic girl Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra) after getting heartbroken by a tourist, Shruti (Ileana DCruz). The selfless love formed between two imperfect, disabled people, illustrates that love has no boundaries and can’t be labeled as normal or abnormal.

Coming from someone who watches way too many Bollywood movies, Barfi is by far the most heartwarming romantic-comedy I have ever watched. Its comedic references to Charlie Chaplin and “The Notebook” make it a light-hearted and enchanting, must-watch film!

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before: Always and Forever

As you all know, the famous book and movie series To all the Boys I’ve Loved Before has gained enormous success internationally, and has had the reigning title for one of the best rom-com dramas. Sadly, that era is now coming to an end, with one of their biggest releases yet on February 12, 2021, “To all the boys I’ve loved forever and always”, Valentine’s day special. Seniors Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky tackle college admissions, long-distance relationships, and making huge life decisions, just like our seniors this year are.

This beautiful love story starts with Lara Jean and Peter experiencing their last year in school, prom, and a senior trip. As spring break comes to an end and college portals start updating their decisions, stress and tension build as a perfectly planned future takes turns and bumps. The trilogy starts and ends beautifully by highlighting the many lasts and firsts involving friends, family, and stronger relationships. It has been so refreshing to watch a film where the senior class cheers on their 4-year accomplishment, and throws their caps high into the air as they jot down one last message into their yearbook. The trilogy has done a great job to end this film with happiness, as it sends us off with hope and confidence to tackle the next stages of our lives.

Now all you need to do is grab a bag of your favorite snack, turn on your Netflix, and watch it with someone special or by yourself. I hope this movie brings positivity and happiness to your life. And cheers to the class of 2021!

Places To Go and Things To Do With a Special Someone

THE QUILL 64

PICNIC

A picnic is a perfect way to spend time with someone special in your life. Just imagine you and your significant other driving to a beautiful beach, or one of Bangkok’s many parks to enjoy a lovely sunrise or sunset. These hangouts can be arranged spontaneously, with a convenient time and day to each person’s liking. Picnics are infinitely adaptable, and fruit, pancakes, and chips, are just the beginning of all the special treats you could pack. You are not limited to anything and are free to arrange a personal surprise, perfect for your loved one. With minimal effort and an informal environment, a picnic date offers mad results. Especially when you're outdoors, you will be more drawn to spend time with your significant other than on your phone. Nature pushes you to admire the beautiful scenery and take part in long conversations.

ROOFTOPS/CAFES

If you want to experiment with new foods and ambiance, go to a cafe or rooftop. Cafes are perfect if you don’t have a large budget to work with. Usually, cafes offer a variety of cuisines for their customers to choose from. Blue Whale Cafe and Nana Coffee Roaster are just suggestions of where you could go to catch up on life, and bond with your significant other. Also, night dates are amazing on a rooftop, because you get to enjoy the beautiful and lively atmosphere of Bangkok. The food could definitely end up being on the pricier side, so if you don’t want to spend that much you could always go for a smoothie or a drink.

ACTIVITIES

Fun couple activities are also a great way to build connections with your significant other. Laser tag, paintball, and art activities are some fun options, which will help you to de-stress, and create lasting memories. An added benefit to this type of date is that you’ll be able to learn more about your partner’s interests, talents, and dislikes.
