THE BEND
4 // TH E R A C I NG M AGA ZI NE
On behalf of all those involved with this project, it is a privilege to welcome you to The Bend Motorsport Park for our inaugural racing event. Inspired by the best in the world, The Bend Motorsport Park has been designed and built with great ambition. We think we’ve created a venue unlike anything else in the world. We are delighted to launch The Bend in hosting the Shannons Nationals and a substantial seven categories of racing. Together with the participants and spectators we are creating motorsport history over these three days with many firsts. A driver from each category will claim the first ever official track record, we will see the first spectator walk through our gates, and many first memories will be created amongst family, friends and motorsport lovers whilst exploring this spectacular venue together. We are excited and proud about the positive impact that this development will have on several fronts. Young aspiring South Australian riders and drivers now have a home to learn the craft of racing, and one day we hope to see more local talent competing on the Australian and global circuits. Regional tourism is already feeling the positive impact of The Bend opening this weekend with every accommodation bed filled within a 50 kilometre radius. The Bend will create new visitation to the Murrylands tourism region, showcasing the nearby Langhorne Creek wine region, Monarto Zoo as one of the world’s great open range zoos, and river sports on the nearby Murray river just to name a few. Whether you come for the day, or stay in the unique Rydges Pit Lane hotel, we look forward to being your host at The Bend Motorsport Park.

GOING AROUND THE BEND
The anticipation is building ahead of the first ever motor sport event at The Bend Motorsport Park. As the sun rises over Tailem Bend, all eyes will be on the Shannon Nationals’ first round of 2018, the first event to grace the world-class track. After plenty of planning and construction work, the Bend has the capacity to accommodate for all motoring disciplines in the one complex and has attracted plenty of interest. CAMS has been a supporter of the project since it was first mooted, including securing FIA approval for the venue and working with the South Australian government to locate an appropriate site and design. The circuit is inspired by some of the world’s most iconic racetracks and is Australia’s only circuit to comply under the latest FIA Grade 2 and FIM Category A standards.
At 4.95km long, the International Circuit layout, ideal for most national series events and Supercars, will play host to the other six categories taking place at the Nationals. A combination of fast straights and 35 technical corners make the Bend exciting from both a driver and spectator’s point of view, while an aggregate rise and fall of 85 metres ensures remarkable viewing. From an officials’ perspective, the opening of The Bend provides a unique opportunity to be part of a historic moment in Australian motor sport. CAMS’ 2016 Australian Official of the Year, Rob Thiry, believes it’s an opportunity that should not be passed up.
CAMS CEO Eugene Arocca was thrilled with the setup of the venue, labelling it as a 'game changer'.
“I never imagined that a world class motor sport facility would be built in South Australia,” Thiry said.
“The various configurations of the circuit will make the Bend an iconic track that competitors of all levels will gravitate to,” Arocca said.
“I am not sure we will ever see another circuit of this scale be made in Australia again in my lifetime so it’s a unique opportunity.
“It’s also a huge thrill for the Shannons Nationals to be making history as the first motor sport event at the venue – we can’t wait for the first cars to hit the track.”
“For South Australia and as well as all motor sport officials, The Bend represents the first permanent circuit built in about twenty years.”
While the circuit itself boasts an impressive 7.7 km track, the second longest permanent race track in the world, second only to the Nordschleife in Germany, the Shannons Nationals will create headlines by using two different layouts throughout the three day event. As the major drawcard for the event, the CAMS Australian Endurance Championship will be the first to utilise the whole 7.7-kilometre ‘GT’ circuit, as its endurance conditions make it perfect for the race.

FUELLING THE FIRE It might not be a sexy subject, but one Aussie company is proudly making the racing wheels go around thanks to a fire for all things fuel. Wor d s : R i c h ar d Crai l l
I mage s: Ra ce Fue ls A rchiv e
“Fuel,” says Mark Tierney, a director of Melbournebased motor sport staple Race Fuels, “Is not a sexy part of going motor racing.” And that’s probably the truth. Despite distributing the product that quite literally makes the internalcombustion wheels go round, it’s hard to get people excited about their racing fuels. You put it in the tank and it makes the car go: as a consumable, it doesn’t change the outcome of a race for a spectator in the same way, say, a soft tyre does when compared to a hard. To most, it’s just a usable commodity that costs more money the higher the Octane number is. Naturally Tierney, a long time racer who now helms a business that distributes nearly one million litres of fuel around every state in Australia per year, doesn’t share that opinion. Race Fuels was founded in 2003 and started distributing ELF racing fuels and products in Melbourne and Tasmania. “It started with me dropping a few drums down to Sandown or Phillip Island in the back of a BA Falcon
8 // T H E R AC I NG M AGA ZI NE
Ute – we later added a box trailer – on Friday morning and then we were done for the weekend,” Tierney remembers. Today the business is the primary supplier of fuel to the V8 Supercars, Shannons Nationals, Australian GT, Bathurst’s 12 and 6 Hour races and a host of other events. It makes for a busier schedule than days gone by. “Across the year we would be supplying product to several hundred people each weekend, and that’s before you take into account needing to deliver product to V8 Supercars and the Shannons Nationals. They all operate very professionally and expect a level of service that’s a bit more than dropping off the fuel drum and saying ‘seeya’. “The business is as much about providing that service and support to teams and drivers as it is actually pumping fuel at race tracks.” The Race Fuels organisation is certainly larger than a Ford Ute and a trailer these days. An enormous B-Double transporter carries the fuel across the country with multiple staff on hand to ensure
the product is properly and promptly distributed at each round. RaceFuels does not request pre-bookings, they believe it is their role to carry enough to cover all contingencies. “We have four types of fuel that we supply and we carry enough of each to make sure everyone that’s going to be at the race meeting is catered for, but we try to do more than that too,” Tierney explains. “At a lot of events like the Kumho V8 rounds, for instance, they’re only allowed to have 60 litres of fuel in the garage at a time so part of it is making sure that everyone is re-supplied across the weekend. We go to them instead of them coming to us so that customer service side of things is very important. “It’s a logistical challenge to say the least, the start of the year in particular. “We even go to the test days and spend a lot of time predicting who is testing where so we can plan our supply. It is not uncommon for RaceFuels to attend multiple circuits on the same day”. But wait, there’s more. In this day and age when you need to sign a waiver before you go to the bathroom, there’s a significant safety effort around the Race Fuels business to the point where it’s unlikely people could go racing without the procedures and standards companies like Race Fuels provide.
“It’s a fact of life that the events wouldn’t get a permit unless they had a fuel management plan in place,” Tierney says. “There’s so many regulations and OH&S issues surrounding the control of dangerous goods in quantities that it’s not feasible for people to bring their own fuel to the track, especially at major events, any more. You just wouldn’t get a permit, so our role is to take that issue out of the equation and make sure it’s safe and we’re conscious of taking away everything we bring in.” Hailing from a passionate racing family, Tierney believes it’s critical that the enjoyment of the sport has to be number one in operating the business. “I think you have to be very fond of it to be involved at the level we are,” he says. “We try and go above and beyond to help people out. We’ve had several Melbourne teams without space in their transporter come to us and go ‘hey, could you take a drum back to Melbourne for us?’ and we’ll do it and drop it at their workshop. It’s no problem. “It’s all part of what we do and hopefully it’s making it better for everyone. We certainly get a buzz out of it.”
Sean Scott, RaceFuels’ operations manager, has a full time job preparing the compliance paperwork ahead of a race meeting.

SHANNONS SET FOR BUMPER 2018 COVERAGE Former Supercars commentator and Network Ten F1 host Greg Rust will head up this year's Shannons Nationals coverage, with fans able to enjoy action from the six rounds on their favourite devices and TVs in 2018.
Former Supercars commentator and Network Ten F1 host Greg Rust will head up this year’s Shannons Nationals coverage, with fans able to enjoy action from the six rounds on their favourite devices and TVs in 2018.
“The Shannons will start with a bang at The Bend Motorsport Park. It will be the first ever motor sport event at this amazing venue, so we know there will be lots of interest in seeing the various categories race at The Bend.”
The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) has today confirmed details of the Shannons Nationals broadcast, with a new-look live stream on the Sunday of each event hosted by experienced broadcaster, Rust.
Rust said he was excited about his newest challenge.
Once again the Nationals will provide access to some of the best racing on free-to-air and subscription television, with SBS and Fox Sports to again air the popular Speedweek program. In 2018, AVE will work with CAMS to provide an improved live stream product which will be broadcast on the Sunday of each event and available on thenationals.com.au and social media. CAMS CEO Eugene Arocca said motor sport fans had plenty to look forward to in 2018, including Rust’s addition to the broadcast. “All motor sport fans will have seen the great work of ’Rusty’ throughout the years at various motor sport events and we can’t wait to work with him on the Shannons Nationals,” Arocca said. “Shannons Nationals plays host to a large number of categories and in 2018, our coverage of these events will allow fans to get up close and experience the action live on Sundays as well as to recap all the highlights through Speedweek on SBS and Fox Sports. 2 2 // T H E R A C I NG M AG AZI NE
“Over time I've covered a wide range of categories in Australia so this just about completes the box set,” Rust said. “I'm passionate about motor sport at all levels and the Shannons Nationals covers such a wide range... it’s the perfect mix. From the CAMS Australian GT Championship to the Australian Production Cars and every other category we’ll see race on the calendar this season, I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in and sharing the insights from the track to those fans who are watching on at home.” Rust's involvement in the series will be something of a focal point in a busy 2018 which will see him broadcasting in Asia, Australia and across the Tasman in New Zealand. He recently returned to the coverage of the CAMS Australian Rally Championship at the opening round in Ballarat and also worked with the GPTV team at Albert Park and looks set to be at the Singapore F1 Grand Prix in September as well. "The Shannons on-air team they've assembled is terrific. I'll be working with some very experienced commentators and producers who I really respect. They love the sport as much as I do and they go
about broadcasting the same way I do. It's about the constituents, the teams, the cars, the drivers and ensuring we answer the questions the fans are thinking about as they watch. “I also reckon its perfect for viewers of all ages no matter how they digest their motor sport. If you want to watch the live stream we'll endeavour to interact with you along the way and have plenty of fun too.” Today’s news comes on the back of CAMS’ recent announcement regarding free-to-air coverage of both the CAMS Australian Rally Championship and BFGoodrich CAMS Australian Off Road Championship. “It’s exciting to see the interest in motor sport on the rise and we know that as the technology improves, coverage of the various championships will only get better in the years ahead. We’re excited to be playing a large part in that,” Arocca added.
